As a romantic asexual I headcanon just about every single character (and ship) I like as asexual/on the ace spectrum. I just feel there's not enough representation of non-sexual beings engaged in romantic love in popular media. I'd really love it if more stories explored good and fulfilling partnerships that thrive even without sexual intimacy. I'm not against characters being sexy or having sex I think it's just really neat when figures can exist and fall in love without a big part of the relationship revolving around fucking. I love when people, ace or not, can explore their sexuality on their own terms and set boundaries that are accepted and respected by their partners. I love when they realize they're more than their body and what their body is able to provide in terms of sexual fulfillment. I love emotional intimacy independent of the pressure of sex.

Spooner was gonna explore her sexuality and identity further if they hadn’t been cancelled according to the writers. So it’s not impossible that she would have been canon aro too. And yeah she told her mom she might never marry but she also thought Zari’s description fit her for the time being. The discovery is a process. It’s different for everyone.
she also reiterated the fact that she doesn't "get those types of feeling for anyone" referring to both sex and the relationship escalator when zari tried to play fuck marry kill with her !! i hope she would've been canon aro, i don't know how much faith i have in that, i don't have much trust left when it comes to supposedly canon aromantic representation. the most canon aro rep my aroallo ass ever gets is an ace character slightly implying they don't do the romo thing either.
and zari's overall description of asexuality was... flawed. i'm so glad we got that scene, i almost cried the first time i saw it, but that doesn't mean it was perfect. everybody should read yasmin benoit's piece on it tbh. zari says that asexuality is having little to no interest in sex- not exactly right, asexuality means little to no sexual attraction, it can have nothing to do with libido. and ofc they have to go out of their way to point out that aces can still have relationships, because no one's allowed to commit too hard to aromanticism right off the bat.
you can imply it, you can let it run wild in subtext, but you have to treat it like a shameful side chick you're hiding from your wife.
i mean just look at spooner's reaction to behastra. do you know how many aspecs and aroaces dread their friends getting together, bc it usually means pda all up in their face and their friends pulling away from them to focus on their romantic relationship? i'm not saying that her reaction is inherently aromantic, zari's a bit annoyed too, it's just. i've been there. most aspecs have been there. it's easy to infer spooner's annoyance specifically as aromantic romance repulsion.
i'm frustrated bc spooner got to be canon ace. she only got to be coded as aro. even if she canonically figured that out later, that still proves my point. aromanticism is still treated as the afterthought to a character's asexuality.

Yk what l am a romance-repulsed aro ace and l am tired. Btw this post isn't meant to invalidate the romance-favorable aros..they are valid af but this is just my personal opinion.
So almost every romance-favorable aro feels as an outcast in the aro community bcs they like romance and all that. Which is a completely valid and understandable situation. But tell u what? Lately, l have been seeing that it's the romance-repulsed aros who have been feeling this way.
Like how many romance-repulsed characters can u name? I don't watch anime so ldk abt that but when we talk about general media..then well no one comes to my mind bcs for one thing we have so less aro or ace characters and for another thing abt 90 percent of them are either favorable or averse to romance.
In the comments also...ppl say things like "romance-favorable aro representation is the MOST important representation" Like...yk that literally has made me suicidal so many fricking times? Like...it's me who feels isolated from my community now bcs an aro blog l follow it's the usual "Not all aros are romance-repulsed, some are favorable!" And it gives me huge vibes of HATING ROMANCE IS WRONG. (Ik they might not mean that but..still).
l know that romance-favorable representation is needed but so is romance-repulsed rep. Creating the character to be the latter doesn't mean that every aro is romance-repulsed. They can just say that in the series. I will also feel a lot validated and included.

hi, sorry if this question bothers u but i want to genuinely ask bcs it’s been bothering me a lot. If u remember i posted about the misinformation on the saiki k fandom and when i saw ur repost and account i noticed that ur ace, so i want to ask u something.
The time when i posted the post i was only got 1-2 post/video on tiktok about ppl misinformating on their video or comments, But! now even tho its rare a saiki content on my fyp but almost evry time there is one the bideo pr the comment will be flooded with misinformation especially around ppl saying saiki aroace canon. i also see it on twitter or tumbkr on those “ur (character name) is canonly aro/ace”. And i Hate when ppl give misinformation to other ppl so i want to ask u, is it wrong to comment/reply “he’s not canonly ace/aro” or something like that to ppl comment saying saiki is canon ace/aro??
Bcs i dont want to hurt the aro/ace community with my words if i say that, or being seen as ‘ruining the fun’ bcs ik sometimes the ppl who says saiki is canon ace/aro is usually also ace/aro, and i dont want to hurt them. Sorry again for asking u this
Your question is no problem for me! Sorry if you had to wait for my response.
“I dont want to hurt the aro/ace community with my words if i say that, or being seen as ‘ruining the fun’ bcs ik sometimes the ppl who says saiki is canon ace/aro is usually also ace/aro, and i dont want to hurt them.”
I might not be able to speak for everyone in the aroace community, but I'll answer this how I would like to be responded to as an aroace person.
In my opinion if someone is just wanting some representation and it makes them feel good, the better move might be to take a step back and let them have it, because chances are they're not taking it that seriously. For example, I liked this one blog that was like "_insert character_ has ADHD is canon!" (but it wasn't canon) I didn't actually believe it was true, I just really liked the rep because I don't get it often.
It hasn’t been confirmed that Saiki is aroace, but it also hasn’t been confirmed that he isn’t aroace. Commenting “he’s not canonly ace/aro,” while true is very blunt and might seem like you’re shutting them down, even if that’s not what you mean to do. If you don’t want to be misunderstood, it could be better for you to ignore it or at least make sure your comment can't be taken the wrong way.
"Saiki can be aroace but I don't think it's been confirmed" or maybe even nicer because communication through text can be read negatively lol. If you're reacting to a creator's content I would suggest telling them what you liked about their work, offering constructive criticism, or not commenting at all. But again thats my opinion.
If you want to comment, I would just say to make sure the message you put out is respectful, and remember that sometimes commenting isn’t necessary anyway. Even if it would be false and can get annoying for someone to claim Saiki is canonically aroace, sometimes it’s not worth your energy or time to correct people because that would be a lot of people. People are going to have their own interpretations of the show regardless of whatever is canonically confirmed. Some people are open to debate, but you’re bound to find someone you disagree with so try not to let it get to you. Remember it’s a show that you enjoy so don’t let something minor ruin the fandom for you. What I like about the Saiki k fandom on tumblr and on AO3 is that there's a reallly wide variety of people with their hcs, and only the occasional bitter post about how Saiki should only be aroace.
I hope I helped somehow!

alright im reading/rereading all discworld books in (approximate) order. Because only some of them are available through audible I'm kind of alternating between two at a time because the ones that aren't on audible I have to listen to on my computer, which is how I managed to finish Mort before The Light Fantastic. I'm still calling it "in order" though because i make my own rules and i am a god of my own making
rambling below cut
So far I've (finally) finished The Colour Of Magic (probably my 4th or 5th attempt lmao), re-read Equal Rite & Mort, and now I'm alternating between Wyrd Sisters & The Light Fantastic--very close to finishing the latter so I'll be on to Sourcery soon, which I'm hype about bc I've been told this was the Book Terry recommended people start with.
To me the issue with TCOM is Terry hadn't quite nailed down how to really bring his characters to life just yet--I can already tell that TLF is kind of bending in the right direction but as early as Equal Rites that spark is totally there. I have a feeling that that's the main reason why I found it hard to feel invested in Rincewind so I'm excited for Sourcery, since it'll be the first novel focused on him after we get over the hump. Also his cameo in Mort definitely hit different when I actually had enough context to appreciate it.
I completely forgot how much i loved Mort. I remembered enjoying it a lot but I forgot how genuinely cute Ysabell & Mort are and also absolutely ICONIC Death lines such as CURRY TIME! and I AM SADNESS which annihilate me every single time without fail. Also I'm weak and Mort's "don't leave me" after he breaks out of the Death Trance has been Living In My Head Rent Free as the cool kids on Twitter love to say. I have not felt an urge to draw sappy fanart in probably a full decade but I am feeling it rn.
AND THEN THERE'S
GRANNY
WHOMST I LOVE
Granny is really like...not my comfort character in the sense that people usually use now. Comfort characters generally leave you feeling as though you've visited with an old friend, but one who is approximately your equal and therefore someone you relate to heavily. Granny leaves me feeling as though finally I've had a chance to talk to someone who I actually believe knows what they're talking about, has it all figured out, and who I genuinely aspire to be more like, and I feel better for it, and more equipped to deal with life. Like, when I Need An Adult, I wanna read a book with Granny in it. Genuine role model material, even with her many imperfections. PTerry's ability to write interesting, flawed, loveable women is always wonderful and refreshing, but what I love most about Granny is that she is badass and unfeminine and powerful and nothing about her revolves in any way about her attractiveness nor any romantic arc. Arguably peak ace and possibly aro rep. Someone who is respected, and admired, and fails to meet any expectation that women are usually held to. Everything is on her terms. And she is just...incredible and i love her so much.
I think that's it for now. I actually had to throw this in drafts last night and I finished TLF this morning and I'm about an 8th the way in to Sourcery so, we will see how that goes.
Also this may be an unpopular opinion, but I think the Blue Sky 2-part tv movie about TCOM & TLF is arguably a lot better than the actual books--it cuts out a lot but it captures the right amount of Discworld magic & the adjustments to the characters are a lot easier to get invested in. To be honest I watched it before I finished Sourcery, so I was surprised that while the movie made a small effort to show Twoflower & Rincewind becoming friends, and their goodbye was warm and felt appropriately awkward but bittersweet, the book was just straight up awkward. And to be honest I miss the little guy and I'm sad he won't pop up until way down the line in Interesting Times.

yoooooooooo, I’m in need of a beta (or betas) for my Garak/Bashir fics since all my usual proofreaders are busy.
summaries/warnings for 4 completed fics are listed under the cut. total word count is 111k+. all are rated ‘explicit’ except for one ‘mature’.
my previous fics are here if you want to know how I write.
preferably I’m looking for someone who can beta all of them, and more fics that come after this, but anyone who can do a one-off is cool too. I definitely want someone who’s good at suggesting things in the name of intersectional feminism and reader sensitivity! or just questioning things and commenting in general. catching typos or confusing sentences would be a huge bonus but that’s not my priority~
please share this with people you think might be interested!!!
--
fics listed longest first, not necessarily the ideal posting order. some of these have been lightly or partially beta’d already.
--
1. The Wolf Who Cried Doctor
Elim Garak/Julian Bashir, Julian Bashir & Ezri Dax
55k, Explicit
Garak is certain: any day now, Julian will discover that the most frequent visitor to DS9’s Infirmary has been going out of his way to fake, cause, and invite harm unto himself in order to gain his dear doctor’s attention. Garak cheerfully tells his lies with just enough variation to remain interesting, but remains afraid that one day Julian won’t believe him when there’s really something wrong.
But Julian is already aware there’s a problem. And the best treatment for an acute case of touch-starved loneliness, he believes, is to provide Garak with as much physical affection and emotional care as possible. It’s not like Julian couldn’t do with some company himself, given how his relationship with Ezri has been fraying.
But neither Julian nor Garak envisioned what could come of it all. Neither of them ever prepared for bliss.
(A post-canon fic where Garak comes back to DS9 and feelings happen.)
Tags: non-endgame pairing:, Julian Bashir/Ezri Dax, side pairings: Ezri Dax/Kira Nerys, Kira Nerys/Keiko O'Brien/Miles O'Brien, Romance, Hurt/Comfort, Fluff, Happy Ending, Angst, Self-Harm, Depression, Mutual Pining, Friends to Lovers, (Julian and Garak), Lovers to Friends, (Julian and Ezri), Sharing a Bed, Cuddling & Snuggling, Massage, Holding Hands, First Kiss, Touch-Starved Elim Garak, Lonely Elim Garak, Jealous Elim Garak, Garak is the quadrant’s most melodramatic drama queen, Lonely Julian Bashir, Bisexual Julian Bashir, Julian’s Foot Fetish, Ezri Ships It, Supportive Ezri Dax, Matchmaker Ezri Dax, Love Triangle, except it’s a tangle of lines, Polyamory, Communication is Hard but Vital, Replicator Malfunctions, Space Station Antics, First Time, Bottom Julian Bashir, Top Elim Garak
Warnings: Garak self-harms (nothing gory or graphic - just hot tea + gravity, improper handling of sewing tools, baiting others to use brute force, purposefully ingesting questionable foodstuffs; scars from past cutting) - but for most of the story he doesn’t think his actions are troublesome, merely viewing self-harm as a means to an end to acquire the physical comfort and emotional attention that he craves from Julian. (Disclaimer: I’m aware this is not the only reason real people might self-harm, but it’s Garak’s reason.)
Unspecific suicidal ideation (Julian tells Garak off and Garak’s like “welp! guess I’ll die now”). Both Garak and Julian are wildly depressed and lonely - and I swear that Ezri, the O’Briens, and I are trying our darnedest to rescue them, but they both have a tendency to spiral into a vortex of doom without talking to anyone about it, so it’s not the easiest thing to do. >:|
Foot fetish is mild but... y’know, present. (Oh, Julian.)
Regarding polyamory/love triangle tags (spoilers ahead!): Julian loves Ezri A LOT but doesn’t realise it’s in a platonic friendship way, and privately ties himself in knots over not being sexually or romantically attracted to her anymore (if he ever was to begin with). Much panicking about unintentional cheating happens, because he’s accidentally in love with Garak while dating Ezri - except (more spoilers) Ezri is trying to set him up with Garak anyway. Ezri is totally poly and way more chill than 99% of people would be in her position. Past Kira/Keiko/Miles.
Special note I mentioned to current betas: you should probably know that i feel some sort of divided way about how ezri is SO accepting of julian's disaster sexuality, because a) i've never once seen any character react like that, ever, in anything fictional or real (potentially bc of lack of bi and poly rep), and b) her reactions are based on how i would react in her place??? (note that i'm aro, ace, and bi, (well that's simplified) so if i was in a relationship with julian it would definitely be platonic but me being madly attracted to him despite that) so it's like... really personal but also i'm worried nobody would relate and would say i made her a pushover. so any pointers you have there would be lovely <3

2. Runabout Rollabout
Elim Garak/Julian Bashir
23.5k, Explicit
Julian Bashir, Elim Garak, Keiko O’Brien, Kasidy Yates, Kira Nerys, Ezri Dax (mentioned)
Eight months after the war ends, Julian invites Garak on a pollen-harvesting trip to Bajor. Distracted by the delight of seeing his friend after so long, Garak gets himself blasted with hormone-altering pollen, and is forced to ride out the repercussions on the runabout journey back to DS9. Symptoms include mood swings, unusual food cravings, and an urgent need for emotional assurance and physical contact. Julian is glad to offer relief, in whatever manner Garak requires. Even in the most intimate of ways...
Secretly, they both hope their brief affair in the runabout’s bottom bunk will lead to something more. But how could it, when duty forever trumps desire?
Tags: Post-Canon, Romance, Hurt/Comfort, Fluff, Porn With Plot, Mutual Pining, Sex Pollen, Mood Swings, Hormones, Cuddling & Snuggling, Public Display of Affection, Smut, Explicit Consent, First Kiss, Caring Julian Bashir, Hormonal Elim Garak, Horny Elim Garak, First Time, Anal Sex, Top Elim Garak, Bottom Julian Bashir, but they do switch briefly, Post-Canon Bajor, Post-Canon Cardassia, Illustrated
Notes: FYI, Julian and Ezri are no longer a couple. How that happened is discussed late in the fic, but Garak thinks they’re still dating when he and Julian sleep together for medical reasons. (Julian is NOT cheating, but Garak guiltily believes he is.)
This one’s probably an easy edit tbh. But I’m still questioning that ^ Garak-thinks-Julian-seeing-Ezri thing, so anyone who can tell me if it feels right, if I need to edit it, or if I should take it out, would be great.
--
3. Tail Over Heels
Elim Garak/Julian Bashir
Julian Bashir, Elim Garak, Amsha Bashir, Benjamin Sisko, Ezri Dax, Miles O’Brien, Kira Nerys, and everyone else
19.9k, Mature
Despite every attempt to deter her, Julian’s mother is coming to DS9. Here’s the problem: Julian told her he was married, and he’s not. Here’s the solution: Garak stands in as Julian’s husband. She’s meant to hate him. But Garak is just too damn likable - and a liiiittle too convincing in the role of Julian’s lover. Not only does his mother believe the lie, but so does everyone else on the station. Even Julian himself is starting to wonder...
Tags: Romance, Fluff, Fake Marriage, Fake/Pretend Relationship, Mistaken For A Couple, Moving In Together, Roommates, Sharing a Bed, Cuddling & Snuggling, Holding Hands, Eavesdropping, Bickering, Cardassian Flirting, First Kiss, First Time, Garak has a tail, Slightly Alternate Canon, set mid season 7, or an alternate post-canon where nobody leaves
Note: This one’s the oldest and closest to being publishable, and already illustrated and lightly beta’d, so this will likely post first, before the end of March 2020. But it definitely needs another going-over.
--
4. Code for Consent
Elim Garak/Julian Bashir
13k, Explicit
Julian Bashir, Elim Garak, Miles O’Brien, Keiko O’Brien
With Miles away, Julian needs someone else to play the evil villain in his secret agent holosuite program. Garak steps up. But tying Julian to a bedpost and fake-torturing him turns out to be an accidental turn-on for both of them. Julian doesn’t want to break character, so allows Garak to escalate his erotic domination towards the point of no return - yet Garak won’t go any further with their roleplay without clear consent. Now Julian has to figure out a way to show Garak he wants him without saying it outright. (But then again, maybe saying it matters.)
Tags: Smut, Romance, Fluff, Friends to Lovers, Porn With Plot, Porn with Feelings, Holodecks/Holosuites, Roleplay, Cardassian Flirting, Accidental Stimulation, Light Bondage, Choking, Light Knifeplay, Consensual Non-Consent, Rape Roleplay, (foreplay only) - soon followed by:, Explicit Consent, Holding Hands, Making Love, Schmoop, Top Elim Garak, Bottom Julian Bashir, set late season 6
Note: Nobody’s read this yet so idk how it comes across to other people, which worries me. Something about it doesn’t sit right with me but I can’t figure it out and need help with that :/

If you’re interested in helping, please submit me a tumblr message at https://almaasi.tumblr.com/submit with your name, pronouns, a statement of your interest and email address (gmail preferred) so I can add you to google docs if I pick you c:
(also maybe a timeframe of when you’d be able to beta. starting any time in the next couple of weeks is fine.)
(disclaimer to people with anxiety: I welcome anyone <3 if you want to say hi, PLEASE DO. I reserve the right not to pick you for any number of secret reasons, and I might not reply quickly, or at all, because I have chronic fatigue and messages are A Lot for me, but it doesn’t mean I don’t like you or you did something wrong!! promise.)

Do you ever feel guilt for headcanoning characters as aro when, in the fandom, almost everyone sees them as gay? Since "queer-coding" usually means "gay-coding" and barey ever "aro-coding", I feel like I'm wrong to see myself in them, despite finding them relatable. I know how unreasonable this is, though, since most cis dyadic straight creators don't really intend to represent any of us, and coding could be accidental on their part.
i think i don’t feel guilty as much as nervous bc I've been harassed in the past over specifically aro headcanons. like even ace headcanons don't give me as much shit as aro ones did tbh. and i totally agree with a lot of “queer coding” is treated like almost canon gay rep and not as something that can be interpreted to fit a lot of identities. like ofc im not saying that there's anything wrong w seeing a queer coded character as gay, but if someone sees them as aro or any other identity that’s just as valid a take too and some people don’t get that. like a couple weeks back i saw posts about the will kid from strange things and how ppl were fighting over him being gay or aro. if his identity isnt confirmed then he can be both, or neither, or whatever, Schrodinger's headcanon if you will.
and yeah i totally agree that a lot of coding is 100% unintentional, or maybe coding isnt the right word to use for this but i cant think of another. like how butch hartmen keeps accidentally coding his characters as trans even tho hes like transphobic

You ever just sit and realize how much lgbta+ rep galavant had, esp in s2 when they dropped all pretenses of holding back and being subtle about, well, anything?
Like, s2 is really rough and unpolished and has a LOT of things that are over the top/not held back, that they didn't do in s1 for, idk, safety sake (along with inconsistencies for humor and song sake, such as madalena going from "i don't think about what I'm eating" to "eating Vegan dinners nightly", IN AN AREA WHERE THEY BURNED ALL THE CROPS SO THEY WOULDN'T EVEN HAVE ANY FOR MONTHS/OVER A YEAR??)
Like, the writing definitely feels rushed and not at all like a polished royal jewel, but the variance of lgbta+ rep, whether outright or unspoken, was... Surprising? Maybe not GOOD/BEST REP EVER (i mean, they do a gay bar, a bisexual sexually liberated rock princess, and I'm forgetting the third one of s2, but in s1 i totally accept that the pirates were trans bc of the island and fair they mention), but like
They did not show cowardice in it, they LITERALLY MARCH UNDER A RAINBOW FLAG IN S2
Amazing. Out of all the things s2 did wrong, i will appreciate the amount of groups they tried to show. And it was never just "one person", it was usually an entourage/entire group.
(Also maddie is aro, maybe demi or gray, Richard is ace and greyro, songs be damned, and Gareth is aro with a "we can't decide if he likes women or beer more, and what kind of women he does since he pokes fun at someone who fits neither extreme" acespec, ESP after the song about love and how his arousal at the sight of her is treated as part of a new discovery)
Hi I've been listening to Galavant songs again can't you tell
