hello! i adore your fics and your writing! i was wondering, what books would you consider and absolute must read to hone both our writing and reading (as in, comprehending a book) skills?

There's a few books that I could recommend with wildly different reasons. I don't know what type of writing/reading you want to be doing or what your experience is right now. I mainly learned through reading/writing and all of those works adding to my style, so it's not that much non-fiction. Anyway, I'll be naming a few things and say why it helped me! I hope some of these can work for you!

First of all– for poetry, I loved reading any work (my favourite is Averno, but there's lots of her work online) by Louise Gluck and maybe adding onto it with her non-fiction work American Originality. The non-fiction gives you a peak into her mind and her reflection on what makes literature good, but reading her works first lets you know why you should care about her opinion (spoiler, it's because her works are beautiful).

If you'd enjoy looking at what exactly literature can be, how far you can take it (or how much greek classics can be fanfictionized + turned into a poem) you can read Autobiography of Red. I think this is one of the most impressive/creative books I've read.

The same goes for Ali Smith. She's so smart with choosing a unique form/style when writing prose and combining politics, gorgeous, magical stories. I loved her book Spring most (it makes least sense) but Companion Piece or Summer have similair vibes with an easier story.

Then, one of the reasons I got into writing was because of Allen Ginsberg and watching/listening to his readings of Howl. I was young when I watched Kill your Darlings and the documentary Howl but it got me to take my writing serious. It's interesting when learning how to use rythm, politics, lightness, anything. You can watch his readings of Howl on youtube by the way, so you could do that first!

If you'd like an introduction to Russian classics within short stories, I think that A swim in a pond in the rain by George Saunders can be interesting! It's just a few short stories and reflections on them by a Creative Writing teacher.

I also often give my students the exercise to read some stories of Raymond Queneau's Exercise in style, and try to observe one spot and write exactly what they observed it in different styles/perspectives like Queneau does (I tell them to write 3 styles for every spot).

Or, you can look at someone like George Perec, who quite literally wrote a book called An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris (and also the book i love most called 'Species of Spaces') who focusses on writing as much and as detailed as possible about one place. Don't make anything up. Just write every single thing down. It's a nice exercise to do in your own city! All these observations can be used beautifully when writing fiction, or they can help you make the made up observations more realistic. (I don't know if you should read Perec, it can be a challenge if you get started, but you can use his way of observing and researchig).

When talking about perspectives and writing characters that are possibly not understandable to us, I think it could also be interesting to read Han Kang's The Vegetarian.

Or, when thinking about writing magical realism and worldbuilding you can check out Yoko Ogawa's The memory police or Murakami's Hard boiled wonderland and he end of the world or Killing Commendatore.

Then lastly, if you're looking for something that teaches us how to write empty/slow but very meaningful books, you could look into Cold enough for snow by Jessica Au or Buzz Aldrin, What Happened to You in All the Confusion? by Johan Harstad.

There's so much more but this answer is becoming wayyyy too long already! Hopefully some of these recommendations work for you or match what you think is interesting!

it a page of a notebook, writen in sloppy handwriting, rushed but relaxed at the same time. the pen doesnt seem to have been pushed down very hard, ulike some of the other notes found simular to this one.

"averno is pretty cool! the school, the people in my department, the cryptid hunts, its better than anything else. but... i cant help but to wonder about the shack. i know it and its duplicate are gone but, could there now be something new that takes its place? a cave? a house? a pillow case? i cant help the urge that tells me to look but i know better, i may never come back. even so, what do i have left to loose, my sanity thats dwindling away after... the incident? no, my friends, family, even, here in this school, in these ever changing tunnels. so for now, these thoughts stay here, in this book, on this page, never to be seen by anyone but myself unless i cant undo what was done, ultimately showing this off for the entirety of the DUE to see..."

the page is ripped after that, clear that whoever wrote it also wrote the notes on a very mysterious student in the department of unconfirmed existence, and its clear they didnt want this, or any of their notes from what we call the scattered notebook, to be found. we can only assume this was ripped forcefully out of it, but some speculate that it wasnt ripped from the notebook by its author. that begs the question, if not the author of the notes, then who ripped it out and why?

Zangetsu, el rey de las tinieblas, pensaba que ya era momento de cederle el trono a su único hijo: Ichigo, pero para esto, el muchacho debía contraer nupcias.

Sin embargo, su vástago se negaba rotundamente. El problema no era encargarse del infierno, no, para Ichigo eso era lo de menos.

El pelinaranja seguía allí muy tranquilo, de pie frente a su padre, el rey, lo cual demostraba su total irreverencia, pues aunque él fuese el príncipe, nadie, absolutamente nadie debía mirar de frente al demonio supremo.

Todo aquel que se presentase ante Zangetsu, debía hacerlo de rodillas para demostrar su lealtad, pero sobre todo, sumisión y temor.

* Ichigo, tu deber es. . . *

* Ya déjame en paz, viejo !!. *

Y finalmente, el joven príncipe del averno perdió todo rastro de paciencia; se le olvidó que el demonio frente suyo no era otro más que su padre, y se le olvidó el respeto que le debía por ello y por ser el rey; se le olvidó el miedo, aunque este último hace mucho que dejó de sentirlo y en cambio lo infundía. . . en todos y cada uno de los demonios que habitaban ese lugar de sombras y muerte.

* Sabes que para tomar tu lugar, el requisito es que yo tenga una compañera. Y quizás no te has dado cuenta, pero todas las mujeres de aquí me tienen pavor. *

Decía el muchacho, un poco más calmado. Si, esa era una buena razón para rechazar el trono.

Tras este pensamiento, el joven príncipe tomó una decisión.

Sin previo aviso, dio media vuelta y caminó fuera de la inmensa sala.

Sin más, Ichigo abandonó la sala, luego el castillo y finalmente el infierno, dejando a su padre en sincero shock.

Muchos demonios jóvenes iban al mundo de los humanos a hacer travesuras y maldades, era como un ritual de vacaciones. Si, era un lugar ajeno donde se pueden hacer destrozos porque nadie te dice nada.

Pero su hijo. . . Ichigo nunca había aprobado, ni mucho menos practicado, ese comportamiento.

Y Zangetsu se preguntaba . . . si acaso esa escapadita al mundo material le haría bien, o tal vez afectaría aun más a su hijo.

Para esta historia me imaginé a Zangetsu como el rey demonio. Isshin es demasiado "happy" para ese papel, ¿no creen?. Además me gustaba la idea de que él fuese el padre de Ichigo.

Hello! Thank you for sending me your asks and thank you for reading and enjoying my fics! This will be fun ((:

1. What’s your favorite character(s) to write for?

Sasuke Uchiha, still and maybe for forever. It's starting to become a close call with Lan Zhan/Wangji from mdzs though. I love their silence and their conflicted feelings. Writing them is like soothing a quiet pain.

11. How would you describe your style? (Character/emotion/action-driven, etc)

I would say... not plot driven. Slow. So much happens because nothing happens (or we realise so much has happened, because nothing happens). It's like quiet mornings for talking. Like making space, like a calm after a storm?

Also, somehow, uncontroled and messy (which i do not see as a bad thing per se, but bless @kemperrose for beta reading).

12. Who is your favorite author? 

It's Ali Smith! Her style is uncontroled, witty, engaged and completely unique. Don't ask me what her books are about, I won't know, but oh i love them so much. Also! I love Louise Gluck so much rn, especially her book Averno (I posted some Averno fragments earlier). Then for fanfic writers I mainly love @kinomiakai (:

13. When did you start writing fanfic? 

I started writing Naruto fanfiction when I was 13, which is 11 years ago! I started by writing/posting Shikamaru centric fics. I wrote snk for a while instead of Naruto though.

17. What fanfic tropes do you gravitate to writing for? 

This won't come as a surprise but: domestic fluff or hurt/comfort. I used to write so so many dumb Coffee shop au's and Farmfics as well hahaha.

18. Do you prefer editing as you write, or waiting until it’s finished? 

I can't edit while writing bc I will get stuck but when I want to continue writing (say, after writing 1k and falling asleep) I'll reread what I wrote the day before to get inspired and edit that part. I read all stories 1 more time before publishing them though.

21. Is there an idea you’ve always wanted to write, but haven’t yet?

Hmm.. not really? I have been thinking about writing a farmfic / small village fic that is more in a modern setting. I would love to write another multi chapter slow fic where they're just in nature. Maybe one where Sasuke rents Naruto's bnb cottage?

29. What part of the writing process do you enjoy the most? (Brainstorming, outlining, writing, editing, etc) 

Honestly, I brainstorm and outline very little. Literally answering something like question 21 is as much as I have before i sit down to write. So, the sitting down and doing the actual writing. I'm a very "go hard"/blunt writer. I sit down without having any idea what will come, and I write a lot of my fics in one sitting, starting at breakfast and forgetting to sleep in the evening.

I also love going through @kemperrose 's edits bc she's so funny and I make so many stupid little dutch mistakes (we've been working together since Your name, and what that really means, so for exactly a year now)

30. Do you write down all your ideas? What makes you decide to write one versus the other?

Nope! If I want to write a fic I just think of something and get started. Most of the time I also upload it even if it sucks a bit.

3. Do you have a favorite scene you’ve written from Homesick for a mountain's song story/chapter? 

Yes, I certainly do! My ultimate favourite scene is the ending scene of chapter 5, where they say sounds together. I think it's such a small scene (in it's energy) but the most powerful one.

I also love the scene where Kana hints that she thinks Naruto and Sasuke are in a relationship and that she accepts them/sasuke in chapter 3. When she says: ‘A lot of people become incapable of loving, because of what the world has done to them. It’s a blessing if you still can, even if it’s the last thing you get to keep.’  and ‘I just want you to know that we don’t mind. You and Naruto are always welcome with us. We’re not going to judge you, even if he starts living here permanently.’ 

4. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of Homesick for a mountain's song? 

Hmm.. not really? I changed Sakura a bit while editing. She was a bit more rude to Sasuke in my first versions, bc I wanted to add it to what made Naruto felt conflicted, but I made her more calm eventually. I think that Kishimoto did his female characters dirty, and I don't want that in my fics. I only gave her the normal amount of guarded.

I ended up not writing the party where they "marry". Though i thought about it, I wanted to keep the ending small. The altar for their parents made it to the sequel, but I could say the same for that.

31. What was the development process of Homesick for a mountain's song like? 

Oh.. hmm.. so basically I wrote this story while I was at home with a burn-out, in my graduation year. I was the most broken version of myself when I started this story, and I honestly believed it saved me and me as a writer. I've always been good at enjoying small things and I've always been a calm person. Homesick gave me a place where I could show myself I still had that in me.

With that said... the proces was me getting up way too late, or way too early to watch the sun come up bc I couldn't sleep, and sitting down to write this. I had no plan. I just sat down and wrote. I think it was a distraction and it made me happy. I wanted to write 5 chapters at first, but since me and my readers got attached to the slow chapters it turned into 6 and then into 8.

I posted every chapter right after writing them, and the comments motivated me a lot, though i never expected to get so many. To write this fic, but also to try and write my final work. So... yeah... i think i lived with this story. I somehow ended up still graduating, and it was the same week when i uploaded chapter 8.

Replying to your other ask: know that we're together on that one! Ichiko Aoba makes me feel so nostalgic... or shall I say homesick haha, for nature, for this softness, for late converstations or quiet, for the small things in life. May you live softly! Your post about forest guardian Janus got me thinking about a ts averno au. Which A New School departments do you think each side would be in? I think Virgil would be dcm and both Roman and Remus would be dcd (Ro is creation, Rem is destruction), but I don’t know about the others. This is assuming you know what the Averno Township is.

i have absolutely no idea what that is and only about half the words in this make sense to me but it do be soundin kinda cool tho so i will look it up tomorrow!!!

Hi there! I just read all your metas on Will and how dangerous and dark he really is. And it just fascinated me! I always thought that I had a pretty good grasp and understanding of the show, but when I read them, I was blown away and felt very naive. And now I'm just craving a fic where Will is characterized in that way! So I was wondering if you have any recommendations or favorites with that type of characterization?

Hello! Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed my metas - I think all nuances of Will’s darkness can keep being uncovered for a long time, he’s really a very complex character. As for fics, I haven’t read Hannigram ones in ages apart from occasional one-shots, but here are the ones I immediately think of. Though if you’ve been reading fics for a long time, you’ve probably already read them :D

Averno series takes place after S3 and it’s one of my most favorite portrayals of Will and his slowly developing life post-Becoming. The second part isn’t finished but it ends on a good note. 

A Great and Gruesome Height also happens post S3, and it also has a great canonical portrayal of Will. He craves to re-create what he felt when killing Francis with Hannibal.

Bright Hair About The Bone is A/B/O AU, but it’s an amazing story where Will’s darkness has new incredible layers. It’s both similar and different to how it’s portrayed in the show, and without doubt, it’s one of my most favorite stories. 

Wage your war is another A/B/O AU. Will is way more comfortable in his skin as a murderer here, and watching him manipulate everyone to get Hannibal is a pleasure. 

I remember loving Ladders series to death, even though I didn’t like it when I tried it the first time. Don’t really remember about Will’s darkness here, but I don’t generally read stories where he doesn’t have enough of it.

This is a self-rec: you might want to check my One, Two, Three - it’s also an AU, but I did focus on Will’s evolving darkness to a significant extent there.
