And of course Trump’s treason was perfect. It was the best treason ever. Many, many world leaders were amazed at how huge his treason was. They said it was magnificent. The biggest, best, most perfect treason in U.S. history!

Mrs Westenra's tut-tuting days ago about Seward watching over Lucy because "she is better now, she can stop the antibiotics" feels like foreshadowing now, or at least that this isn't an uncharacteristic action from her.
Definitely!
On 6 September she gets worried about Lucy and consults Jack, who then is able to bring in van Helsing. But by the very next day, she already seemed less alarmed than expected and prompted Jack's musing about Nature creating a self-protective instinct towards protecting her from deadly shocks by not allowing them to reach her. And so he "laid down a rule that she should not be present with Lucy or think of her illness more than was absolutely required. She assented readily, so readily that I saw again the hand of Nature fighting for life." That's the day of Lucy's first transfusion, and we see already Mrs. Westenra denying how bad the situation is, and then consenting to keep her distance. The day after that, she thinks staying up with Lucy is unnecessary since she's doing better. And then we don't hear from her again till today.
I think part of it might be related to prejudice against van Helsing. Jack presents the 'stay up with Lucy' plan as recommended by vH. The maids try to intercede with Jack to say it's not needed for vH to stay up with Lucy. And Mrs. Westenra takes away the flowers which were his treatment plan. Perhaps there's an element of distrust towards this stranger of a foreign doctor.
However, I think even without considering any kind of xenophobic angle, Mrs. Westenra does tend towards self-superiority and denial. She gets anxious over something (Lucy's sleepwalking in Whitby, Lucy's health in London), deputizes someone else to take over (Mina in Whitby, Jack in London) and then doesn't seem to worry about it so much any more. At the least, she doesn't talk about her worries. It's almost as though she offloads them onto someone else, and then once she's gotten that out, she can switch to laughing them off as silly and unnecessary in the first place. After all, Lucy seems so much better, and she's not heard of anything getting worse. It must be fine, they must be overreacting and making unnecessary fuss, is all.
It's also possible that now, as her own illness is getting worse (in London Jack says stuff about her going off to lay down and such, while in Whitby she still seemed to be spending her days engaged in a fair bit of socializing based on Mina's comments), she's got some degree of brain fog going on. It might be harder for her to keep track of things. Also a factor could be her regretting/resenting the agreement to keep out of Lucy's health and not visit her. She agreed easily because she wants to avoid scary/negative thoughts (even on an unconscious level), but she also resents it a little bit because 'I'm her mother, I know how to take care of her. And anyway, she seems better now!' kind of thoughts. Once she gets an idea in her head she tends to trust it more than even the experts she is consulting for advice, convinced she knows what she is doing. But she doesn't, and she's making things worse.

Red Bull F1 Team Address Allegations By No Longer Hiring Women
Tumblr media
Women will no longer be employed by Red Bull Formula One team, and all current female employees will have their contracts terminated immediately, in an effort by the organization to prevent further allegations of 'inappropriate behaviour' following those made against team boss Christian Horner.
Announcing the decision a spokesperson for Red Bull Racing said: "If there are no women employed by the Red Bull Formula One team, this will ensure there will be no further accusations of inappropriateness being made against anyone."

Hey, everybody, guess what?!
Disney just announced that they're doing a new Muppets movie! A theatrical one, too!
No word yet as to what the plot will be, but we DO know that there'll be lots of meta humor - after all, it worked SOOOOOOOOO WELL in the Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers movie!
It's also been revealed that the film won't use puppetry at all. Instead, the Muppets will be CGI. But it'll be really good CGI that mimics puppetry - again, just like the Swedish Chef parody in the Chip and Dale movie. You won't be able to tell the difference!
But the film's biggest selling point is its star-studded voice cast. After all, movies NEED to have celebrities voicing the characters in order to be successful. Just look at how successful Strange World was. And Delgo. Yeah, that was a huge success, wasn't it? And yes, it's been confirmed that none of the celebrities will be making any sort of effort to actually sound like the characters. Nobody would be able to take the characters seriously if they had their usual voices for a full movie, right?
The cast is as follows...
Seth MacFarlane as Kermit the Frog
Melissa McCarthy as Miss Piggy
Chris Pratt as Fozzie Bear
Danny Pudi as Scooter
Tracy Morgan as Rowlf the Dog
John Mulaney as Rizzo the Rat
Diego Luna as Pepe the King Prawn
John Oliver as Sam the Eagle
Seth Rogen as Sweetums
Flula Borg as the Swedish Chef
Eric Andre as Dr. Teeth
Kevin Hart as Floyd
Maya Rudolph as Janice
Ken Jeong as Zoot
Chris Rock as Animal
Johnny Galecki as Dr. Bunsen Honeydew
Idris Elba as Beaker
Ed O'Neil as Statler
Lewis Black as Waldorf
Adam Devine as Robin the Frog
Snoop Dogg as Bobo the Bear
Nick Kroll as Beauregard
Awkwafina as Camilla the Chicken
Various YouTube/TikTok celebrities as the various monsters, chickens, penguins, and rats
Oh yeah, and Dave Goelz is reprising his role as Gonzo... which I'm sure means that they care about the integrity of these characters as opposed to them only keeping him on board so we don't get mad that they replaced all the other puppeteers.
Surely this will be a wonderful, very successful movie and not a stunt-casting-ridden, painfully unfunny abomination that flies in the face of everything that the Muppets stand for!

i take it the colonel isn’t gonna be a fan of gigi especially if shes breaking what he would deem to be appropriate or right for elvis to do in public. i despise that man so much
Right, no I think he wouldn’t. But to be honest, initially I reckon he thinks she’s another Ten Day Wonder as do the majority of Elvis’ entourage, probs including Vernon. So she’s not really too much of a bother -it’s just when she lasts and lasts -and starts to swell- that everyone realizes this one might be a staple. Better yet, THE staple one.
…Also, didn’t you read the history articles about how while Elvis and Gigi were on the road touring in late autumn of ‘77, the colonel was found dead while relaxing in a hotel hot tub? Terribly dangerous contraptions for those individuals with health concerns like diabetes and hypertension. It was all very *sad* and unexpected and poor Elvis has to cancel the remainder of the tour and take a sabbatical of grief spent inside Gigi’s snug little snatch 😌

anyways PMMM sucks in that pernicious way that has a lotta good stuff and ideas TO it not to mention the non-(human)-character-design art direction rules (...kinda), and i've even softened on the emotional content (though not in combination with any gain of good faith in its creatorship at all), but then its just like... Oh Yeah It Also Exists To Sell Merchandise Of Girls That Are Like 13 To People Of Various Ages Who Find Them "Cute". And Its Side-Manga Spinoff Shit Was Just Like Absolute Dogshit About It At Least For A While. Like In A Bubble It'd Be Preposterous For The Spinoff To A Grand Cosmic Tragedy(ish) Melodrama About The Horrors Of Growing Up To Be, Like, "Ecchi", But Taking A Look At A Solid Chunk Of The Posters And Things Is Like 'Oh OK Its Just Like That'

Why waste time with philosophy when the Book of Ceremonies of Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos is available?
that book is perhaps the exact opposite of philosophy. it’s one hundred percent practice with next to no theoretical justification for why they’re greeting dignitaries in this order or wearing that cloak to that imperial function.
there is some interesting administrative stuff, though—I remember a passages about the protocol for acquiring, distributing, branding, and retiring army horses so they couldn’t be easily stolen. also, there are lots of fashion details, particularly in that appendix about the appointment of the proedros. that position was invented around the time the book was written and afaict had only one holder (Basil Lekapenos) up to that point, so I imagine it’s pretty accurate to what he actually wore. my unsubstantiated hunch is that he had a hand in writing it—he was very involved with the government at that point, and may have been nursing his ego after being replaced as chamberlain (though he was reinstated by the time of its writing). and by god did he have an ego.
I would really like someone to go through and sketch the various courtly outfits and accessories. I found a book that explains the articles of clothing that weren’t otherwise translated (i.e. what a skaramangion might be), but I don’t have the skill.
overall it makes me kind of sympathetic to the use of “byzantine” to refer to complicated and arbitrary systems. it’s trivializing to be sure, but they did have some damn complicated, arbitrary, lengthy, expensive protocols for anything the government wanted to do. it makes their survival far more impressive imo.
