Card Meanings in the new, The Day I Picked Up Dazai art.

Ok so im currently still in shock that were getting new day I picked up dazai content so bare with me, but onece again Asagiri has included playing cards in his art so of course I have to break down what they mean.

Lets start with side A (the right side):

First we see a joker:

While Gogol is the obvious fit for the joker, the card also describes Dazai extremely well. He is almost always acting like the fool in any given situation, even in the mafia he loved to be as weird and funny as he could as well as tease and annoy the people around him, something jesters famously did.

In fact, his dynamic with Mori is very close to how a king and a jester used to work, where the jester was the only person who was allowed to openly mock the king and would usually heckle him. They also played a key part in psychological warfare, which we see Dazai specialises in.

I think the whole; wit, intelligence and unpredictability kind of speaks for itself.

Next card is the four of spades:

This one is also really fitting, it shows how after the day I picked up Dazai side A, Dazai settles into his little routine of going to bar lupin with Oda as well as how he finally has someone who he can trust and be comfortable around. Finally, it is a clear message of optimism, something Dazai never shows before he meets Oda.

Next the two of hearts:

This one is pretty obvious, it's Dazai and Oda spending time at bar lupin. It actually fits so well, there's not much I can say about it other then how it shows the love and care Dazai and Oda had for each other (platonically)

Now for Side B (prepare to cry)

The first card is the three of spades:

Whyyyyyyyyyy... why Asagiri. This one is also fairly obvious but it has multiple meanings. It most clearly represents Dazai suffering in side B as he has to run the mafia without odasaku and live in utter loneliness while destroying all the connections he never got to have for the sake of a friend he never got to meet.

“It was hard,” muttered the young man. “It was really hard fighting Mimic without you in the organization. I had no choice but to take over for Mori and make enemies of everyone around me to expand the business. Everything I did was for this world’s—”

It also represents the moment on the platform where he nearly tells Odasaku the truth and goes with him to bar lupin, the horrible decision to abandon everything for Odas future

The next card is... the ace of spades:

The ace of spade has many meanings, most of which involve change or transition, but by far its most famous meaning it death. I really don't think I have to explain this one, Beast Dazai having the card of death has a pretty clear meaning.

But the ace of spade does have a secondary meaning, and this one is a little more hopeful, as it shows Dazai passing the safety of this world onto Atsushi and Auktagawa.

Finally, (it's a bit hard to see) we have the ten of diamonds:

I want to focus mostly on the highlighted part because it's what really applies to BEAST Dazai, he lived his whole life to create a world where what matters most to him, that Oda gets to be happy and write his books, becomes real. This card doesn't apply to Dazai directly, more to the fact that he made succeeding in his mission his only priority and discarded everything else.

Bonus round Odasku card; the king of clubs

the only card thats seen on Oda's section and one that clearly represents Odasaku as a character.

"King of clubs represents a dark man, who is loyal and kind. He is a good businessman, shrewd with money and investments, but isn’t selfish. In fact, the King of clubs is a very devoted father, husband and citizen. In a broader sense, the King of clubs encompasses idealized qualities of a fatherly figure. This card is universally considered as a very good omen."

I feel like this sums Odasaku up very well, the devoted father and loyal friend parts are just him to a t.

(this is also the card I think best represents Fukuzawa)

- however this one didn’t go as planned, your distraction didn’t woe over the people you wanted to woe over, instead it created chaos of anger with dazai right behind you

- this wasn’t a mission where physical altercation was a good idea, so when there’s no other plan, you and dazai fled

- your escape plan didn’t exactly work, with dazai purposely leading you to the wrong places

- your mind was spinning, trying to think of a plan before both of you got arrested

- that’s when you turn to dazai, a small smirk on his face, already knowing what to do

- you sighed, knowing this fell under his plan the whole time, in matter of seconds he was basically eating your mouth as disgusting as that sounds

- once the coast was clear, you pulled away, wheezing to yourself trying to catch your breathe while side eyeing dazai

- “how about we continue this later,” the bastard smirks at you before taking your hand and leading you to the proper exit

Atsushi Nakajima :

- it’s not too often that you’re paired with atsushi, everyone knowing how flustered he is around you, even months after starting your relationship

- now the dispute at this party wasn’t either of your fault, it was just someone recognizing you as an imposter, and that’s when both you and atsushi fled

- now, both of you didn’t exactly have a plan b, you didn’t think you’d need it

- obviously now it was a regretful mistake as you’ve wandered into the third dining hall, with guards right on your heels

- finally having some to breathe after being tucked into a corner, you quickly thought of a plan that involved both of you

- without a second thought, you lunged at atsushi, kissing him like your life depended on it, the poor boy was caught in shock but he went along with it

- he genuinely didn’t know it was some type of twisted plan of yours until the guards passed you by running not suspecting anything

- once that happens, you pull away, atsushi breathing hard being taken aback

- “please let me know the next time you do that, my heart can’t bare it” the white haired boy said with rosy cheeks

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa :

- it’s extremely rare for you and akutagawa to be together on a mission, mori doesn’t like to mix relationships with work

- his temper is what got both of you in trouble, he snapped at one of the party hosts, and with that, it started a huge fight

- while akutagawa was willing to kill everyone there, you managed to persuade him to not spill any blood on the shiny floors, instead just run

- both of you didn’t know where you were and aku’s grumbles of displeasure didn’t quite help

- that’s when you thought to yourself what the hell were you going to do to keep everyone alive and both of you out of trouble

- then an idea lit up, you slowly turned to akutagawa, “ryū please just go along with what i’m about to do,” you say and right as he was about to question you, you pushed your lips onto his, him almost pulling away

- it took all his might not to freak out on affection overload but it worked as no guards were chasing you now, instead running in the other direction

- as you pull back, akutagawa immediately turns around from you, face beet red

- “let’s just leave” he said, coughing into his hand, not looking back

whenever he’s really pissy after work, you can notice it. and quick. you drop everything your were doing and walk towards him with a solemn face, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek before leaving him alone (hes shocked and honestly great guy kn how thoughtful you were on noticing it so quickly. maybe it’s because he always has an angry face on ..?)

Beach Day with the ADA :)

Since Bungou Stray Dogs doesn't have a 'beach episode', I thought I'd make one myself with the reader. If y'all would like a separate one without the reader, let me know. :) Genre: fluff, comfort? It had been a rather tiresome week at the agency, so when Fukuzawa offered to let you all have a day off, you were ecstatic. It was Atsushi’s idea to do something together as a group, which prompted some interesting ideas. After Dazai suggested bar hopping, he received a harsh smack from Kunikida.

After looking at the forecast on your phone, you had an idea. “Why don’t we go to the beach? It’s not too far away. It’s close enough for a day trip." And with that, the decision had been made.

Kunikida opted to drive, with you in the passenger seat. He agreed to come along only if Dazai was in the other car (thankfully not driving) with Kyoka, Atsushi, and the Tanizaki siblings. He figured if this was going to be his day off, he should at least get some form of stress relief.

After a stop at the convenience store for snacks and sunscreen, everyone finally arrived at the beach. You got out of the car and helped everyone unload before heading out. The weather was phenomenal and the water was the perfect temperature. The waves were calm enough to relax in the ocean and the sand was incredibly soft.

It was around noon, and you had finally blown up your little ring float to bring into the water with you.

“Aww, can’t swim?” Dazai teased.

“Actually, I can swim just fine.” You playfully flicked him on the shoulder. “Just wanted to ride the waves a bit while they’re smooth.”

He paused. “Well, since you can swim…” He picked you up before you realized what he was doing and ran toward the water.

“No, no! Put me down!” you pleaded. He started to throw you in, but you clutched onto his arms. “You’re coming with me!” You both fell into the salty water. Laughter came from the rest of the gang, except for Kunikida who merely sighed a you two.

“Don’t think we won’t come for you next!”

You ran after Yosano, and Dazai caught Jun’ichiro. Not long after that, everyone had been submerged at least once, sparing Kunikida for their own safety. He had been sitting in a chair underneath one of the umbrellas trying to read a book. He looked over to find Ranpo eating snacks. “You know you have to save some of those for everyone else, right?”

He stopped chewing, “Hm?”

Atsushi and Kyoka were building a sandcastle together. They were fixing up the moat before filling it up with water.

“It looks great! Now we can collect some shells to decorate!” The boy offered.

“Can we use this?” She held up a big crab that was desperately trying to get away.

He made a face. “…Sure!”

The girl placed the crab on top. However, it jumped off and skittered away into the sand. “Well, there goes that.”

The Tanizaki siblings were playing volleyball. Naomi was winning by one point.

“Hey! Anyone wanna play with us?” She called out to everyone.

“Me!” Yosano jogged over to them along with Kenji.

You had been in your swim tube, floating with the waves while Dazai held onto it, keeping you from drifting too far. “This was a good idea. I have to admit, this is quite refreshing.”

“I know, right? I couldn’t think of a better way to spend our day off.” You squinted at his pink nose. “I think you need a little more sunscreen.”

He shrugged, “I’ll be fine.”

“Okay, but if you’re burnt to a crisp tomorrow, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

He laughed at your remark before flipping you into the water. You popped you head up.

“What was that for?”

“If I leave you here to put on more sunscreen, you’ll float away! You must come with me.”

“You’re so dramatic.” You walked with him back to where the group had settled. Kunikida was still buried in his book. You had grabbed the last bag of chips from Ranpo.

“You havin’ fun?” Dazai asked his partner.

The blonde put a single finger towards him, “Don’t.”

“Oh, come on. I haven’t even done anything-”

“Yet.”

You chuckled at the two, “Why don’t we go play volleyball with the others?” Dazai nodded.

After hours of playing in the sun, you all had decided that it was time to go back. Everyone mentioned they were hungry, so you found yourselves at a restaurant nearby. It was a great way to end the day before heading back to the agency. You were satisfied with your food as you listened to everybody talk. The restaurant was cozy and warm, and you were getting tired. After leaning back against the back of the chair, you slowly nodded off.

You felt someone tap your shoulder. “Hey! It’s time to go!” Kenji whispered. “We’re leaving!”

“Hmm? Oh-” You quickly woke up and went with the crew back to the vehicles outside.

You couldn’t remember the ride back since you were out like a light. Thankfully, the loud ones were in the other car, allowing you to get some sleep. There may or may not be a photo floating around of your face squished against the window. Dazai sent it to you the next morning, along with the other pictures taken the day before.

"Which one of you took that?"

"Not telling!" It was him.

acts of service is his #1 love language. There’s no convincing me otherwise. When I say ‘he will do anything for you’ besides killing this is what I mean. You really don’t have to ask either. THE OVERCOAT — mostly yapping

i'm still sane about nikolai's ability. i'm gonna ramble here because i know nikolai better than asgr sensei himself LMAO. also, please note that i am mostly using manga panels for references because that's like the most canon. yippee i'm using the normal font.

this is not entirely a definitive theory or anything. i'm horrible in writing essay. i just want to create a conversation regarding his ability :3

first, let's establish that: he can definitely use his ability without his cloak. (why he looks big in suits omg pin me down pls)

which means he is a LIARRR RAAAAA

(technically not because it is true that his cloak is connected. it's just that he doesn't mention about the ability is not restricted only to the cloak)

now, i think his ability is either:

A. he has a pocket/personal dimension (like lucy's) but can only be accessed through clothings, not restricted to his cloak. like if you're tiny enough to fit his pocket, you might slip into his personal dimension. and i like to think that his personal dimension can be anything he wants. one day it's a big mansion with things he has stored inside scattered all over the floor. and the next day it is probably a circus tent with creepy mannequins around. who knows. i think that's cool. great fanfic source lmao

there are a few similarities between The Overcoat and Anne of Abyssal Red—they are a type of personal dimension and time flows differently than the real world.

some key differences could be that: Nikolai may or may not change the appearances of his personal dimension. The only way to enter his dimension is through clothings/fabrics. Nikolai can still access his dimension without having to teleport himself fully to there. Obviously he doesn't have a big monster waiting in his dimension. He also doesn't have fancy mechanisms like prison door or things like that. His dimension is literally just a fancy storage room.

i remember, a few people here have mentioned that time does not flow in Nikolai's pocket dimension. there are multiple evidences of this. this poll he unleashes moves on a very great speed. he also mentioned that he can dump a blast of explosion just like that.

he could be dropping the poll from a great high and as soon as the dropping poll slip into his dimension, the momentum and velocity stayed the same. he could be pulling out a safety pin of a grenade and put them into his dimension, and he can just immediately unleash an unsafe grenade right onto his opponent.

B. when there's an entrance, there is an exit. the core of his ability is essentially portal creation. as long as the portal is on, things are still connected (perhaps it isn't restricted to a clothing at all. perhaps he severs his own hand to make a gun appear elsewhere). when he closes one connecting portal, the matter trapped within it will get spliced too.

the most prominent example is atsushi's leg.

atsushi's leg is still connected to himself. the portal is 'connected'. and once nikolai severs it or closes it, the object trapped in that portal is also severed. if we apply this logic, it means that atsushi's bone and flesh are literally exposed openly which makes me gag a bit.

by this logic, nikolai can literally sever anything as long as you are within 30 metres. imagine he creates a 'portal' between your head and neck. he could behead people just like that. i think that will be very cool to see. i mean, he already did so in his chainsaw escape trick, which he has a gap between his body and someone else's—which you know what, i feel that the trick is pulled last minute. nikolai is likely intended to be killed off right then and there idk. wouldn't it be more logic to say that he severed his own body like how he did to his own hand? he can already sever and keep his hand connected, it's not impossible for him to do the same for his whole body.

i like to imagine that in this murder when he 'skinned' someone alive.

nikolai probably creates a portal on the victim's body, which allows him to pry open the skin from inside out. imagine you're being tied up and a pair of foreign hands or blade suddenly appear out from your own body and tear your skin apart.

not gonna lie, i feel like fukuchi's sword amenogozen can be totally be replicated by nikolai up to a certain degree. when amenogozen first made the appearance, i literally thought nikolai was helping to manipulate it. i literally thought fukuchi 'borrowed' nikolai's ability or something. nikolai can stab his knife into a fabric or something (an entrance portal) and the knife would come out from inside an organ (an exit portal). the only difference with how amenogozen works and how the overcoat works is that—nikolai just cannot travel back to the past.

i wonder if he can also sever space like akutagawa, but by portal-ing shit

also, i think his ability really doesn't need his clothing to be a medium? because in sigma's case, does nikolai just create seperate portals on sigma's body? connected to what? can he just create random portals onto any space and matter as long as it's within 30 metres? is it really 30 metres? am i tweaking

two things can be true at once. now that i'm properly thinking, Nikolai probably does have a pocket/personal and portal creation at the same time because then he can also keep things and link them. i think i am leaning more to that.

Nikolai is already a strong and versatile ability user (that's my man). ngl i am biased but i do think he can take on a lot of characters. his reflexes and timing is very good—as seen during his fight with atsushi and his timing to jumble sigma (mind you sigma falls from the sky in great velocity). besides, nikolai is spontaneous and chaotic—i imagine it would be hard to figure out his next moves because he can unleash literally anything from his cloak. if he can just create portals with less restriction or medium, he can divert attacks.

i can also take nikolai.
