Psychological Notes - Nikolai Gogol - BSD

These are some simple notes on his psychology

I've done a little analysis on Fyodor in the past. Which you can read here:

Some S4 SPOILERS (nothing huge, tho)

HPD - Histrionic Personality Disorder.

I think anyone who is familiar with HPD can identify Nikolai with it immediately. On a more broad spectrum, he's a near embodiment of HPD.

Histrionic Personality Disorder main Symptoms:

- the constant need for attention/ attention seeking behavior (ex: mannerisms that seek attention, clothing that seeks attention, a specific way of speaking that seeks attention)

- being uncomfortable /physically uncomfortable in situations in which the individual is not the center of attention

- being overly provocative/ seductive

-displaying emotions that seem to be shallow and change rapidly/ do not remain consistent

- speaking vaguely, lacking detail

- being easily influenced by others or circumstances

Considering relationships to be much more intimate than they actually are

On that last point, it brings special attention to Nikolai and his behaviors in S4

His 'friendship' with Fyodor might very well exist only in his head. Fyodor allows him to entertain the delusion to keep him under some flimsy emotional obligation Nikolai sets up for himself. Though, as we've seen, he matches the symptoms as far as shallow and inconsistent emotions go. In one scene, he rejoices over reuniting with Fyodor, and the other, he sends him off to a very possible death.

Nikolai is very eccentric. Going out of his way for flare and drama. Although, on par with HPD, whenever his attention seeking behavior is ignored or doesn't receive the reaction he needed or expected, he either can become distressed or escalate his antics greatly.

A scene that's very memorable and relevant for Nikolai is his: "I'm completely sane" scene.

I doubt that I need to come in here and tell you that this is very unlikely to be true.

To break this down... there is the notion of "sane or Insane Homicide". That refers to circumstantial points. Sane homicide would imply an act of self-defense or perhaps an accident. The person who committed the homicide was a victim of circumstance or negligence. They had no choice, where survival came first, and they needed to protect themselves or others against another human being that was threatening the individual's life. This presents a completely sane person commuting homicide out of need for survival or prevention of harm to oneself or others.

Insane Homicide would go down the path of a crime committed more out of a 'want' than a 'need'.

Nikolai is not physically forced or obligated to commit the murders and atrocities he is responsible for. He isn't trapped or manipulated (as he hates brainwashing by default i doubt he'd allow himself to be a part of it).

Though if I were to assume, Nikolai could be experiencing a compulsion. This refers to an action that the brain feels a pressing NEED to do. If not, Nikolai may feel uncomfortable or feel physically unwell. Compulsions are most often the results of the brain's desire to cure an obsession.

If you are obsessed with germs or cleanliness, you may feel the compulsive need to wash your hands very often. The obsession causes you to be anxious and overthink -> so your brain tries to resolve that obsession every time it occurs, through that compulsion to wash up.

Nikolai is obsessed with freedom. Complete and utter freedom from the world, society, feelings, and existence. To be truly free. His brain could be trying to resolve this obsession by compulsively 'freeing' people (murdering them) from feelings and, therefore, existence. Nikolai temporarily resolves his obsession with freedom by compulsively freeing those around him. If that obsession in his mind isn't resolved, he can not function. The brain needs and wants to function, so it resolves it repeatedly. Because what resolved it once will resolve it every time. And if the obsession can't be resolved, Nikolai grows uneasy and uncomfortable.

Much like a person who can not control their own mind and life, and compulsively chooses to control other's.

I made Atsushi's fit a bit of a combination between Chinese and Japanese given the origin of his tiger.

Kitsuzai once more, of course.

It's actually quite nice to draw the BSD cast as Japanese folklore...well, Atsushi is more Chinese folk, but the point stands~

Here's a little Kitsunezai concept

I always felt like the outfit could be really cool if they could've detailed it a lot more.

When looking at the folkloric feel to Dazai's official Kitsune concept, a few things are identifiable. Here's some stuff-:

-He would be over 100, as kitsune are believed to grow more tails only after reaching that age.

-He's a Yako or Nogitune- which are the more 'morally grey' kitsune. Having a tendency to lean towards mischief and are likely to interact with humans.

-white and black coats of fur are rare, but they are present for nogitune.

In Japanese folk and mythos, kitsune can hold one of 13 powers

celestial, wind, spirit, darkness, fire, earth, river, ocean, forest, mountain, thunder, sound, and time

so they often may wear beads around their necks/ on their person to symbolize the elements

they only wear 12 out of the 13 because they exclude the one element the wearer represents.

So Dazai has 12 beads.

It's fun drawing vampires being vampires.

I'll also take the opportunity to sort of finally touch up on Atsushi's age change in the A.U...

If you guys keep up with the character information sheets, you'll see everyone's age/ estimated age. However, while all are identical to canon, one isn't, and that's Atsushi's.

He's the only character I've shifted the age of and did so rather early in concepting.

I've also felt like the initial shift to 19 wasn't good enough for me, so I'm settling on a steady 20 for A.U. Atsushi.

The reason I changed only Atsushi's age is because he will be my main character (properly so, unlike canon BSD). In BSD, Atsushi acts much like a projection type of protagonist. He is discovering the world/ characters/ rules and societal structure alongside the audience. We know nothing, and neither does he, having been sealed away behind the walls and bars of the Orphanage. Which makes canon Atsushi feel naive, impressionable, emotive, reactive, and sympathetic in his underlying sense of innocence when we first meet him, and he only discovers his ideals and identity for himself as the series progresses. I wanted the opposite for A.U. Atsushi. Him being slightly older and Fyodor finding him much faster allows for a construction of character much more deeply cemented. A.U. Atsushi knows who he is, what he stands for, and why. He's not discovering a lot of the outside world, and he isn't impressionable. It felt overall better to have the darker, colder

, and more mellow version of Atsushi in the A.U. be older. That being said, I didn't feel like the rest of the cast needed that same treatment.

I felt like talking about this as it does characterize the difference between canon Atsushi and A.U. Atsushi strongly.

Happy Fool's Day.

I'm about 5 days late now, but he'll take what I give him.

I had to juggle this between a commission and the 4th chapter- besides ArkFenSo concepting.

You all get a treat, I'm sure no one truly envisioned, and that is Nikolai with a somewhat healthy physique, shocking it's understandable. Curtosy of the Fyo!Atsushi A.U. and therefore, of Atsushi's baking skills.

ArkFenSo is about Shin. Shin Yoshinai, a mysterious prince that popped up with of seemingly nowhere in the ranks of the demon family ruling over the kingdom of Fangs. His lofe amongst the demons in the tense climate between Heaven and Hell.

This is the most over-simplified version. The more you'll find out about Shin, the deeper you will sink. Sink into lies, watching eyes, people with agendas, mercenaries, and the black magic of the Underworld.

The world of ArkFenSo is split into 4 main accessible realms. The human realm (Earth), Heaven, Hell (split into the main plateau and the Underworld) and the Magik realm.

The main focus of all war and conflict was in hell, between the kingdoms. Wars were held over anything and everything. More often than not the reason being sheer bloodlust and ego.

Though Shin was not yet around for that war-littered world. He had only witnessed 2 wars in his time. One of which he participated in.

"Atsushi."

His eyes snapped slightly, refocusing, and lifting his gaze to the russian, who was seated in his desk chair, body facing his screens, though his face wad turned to Atsushi now. That's when he realized he was zoned out in his thoughts and probably missed something Fyodor said...

"Sorry..Dos-san I wasn't.." ...he paused, "I just got lost in thought. "

"I've noticed that much...what were you thinking?" The Russian man's dark gloved hand extended with a butter cookie, which Atsushi took slowly from his fingers..

"It may be a bit uncanny.. but I was wondering about abilities.."

"What about abilities?"
