I don't know if you've heard To The Moon and Back by Savage Garden. But you should check it out. It gives me hard Ashley vibes, especially about her feelings towards Andrew.

I checked it out! And this song really is so like Ashley's family issues with her absent father and her hateful mother, I also find it's very similar with her feelings towards her "friends" like Julia and Nina.

And the motiff about going off to find somewhere they both belong is really cute and very coffincest

okay so you’ve mentioned this tip before on here, and you were saying how like when writing it’s not like the character’s only time existing and so to make your characters seem more human you should allude to their past. but how? like you mentioned that ashton was wearing scrubs in doggy style cuz he’s got a medical job (i can’t remember what) but how did you come up with that? how did you even think to add that, y’know? sorry if this question is stupid

It's not a stupid question at all!! It's a really good one, actually!! I might struggle to answer it in a fully articulate manner but, in my experience, when I write a story, I always spend a little bit of time prior to writing asking myself some simple questions about my characters to get to know them (that way, when I start writing, I'm not constantly asking myself the questions of "who the fuck is this guy and why should readers care about him??" In RPF it's a little easier to manage because readers already do care about them and that's why they're reading the fic lol but I do have to do a little extra work to keep them interested & invested).

Like, for instance, I have too ask myself: what jobs do they have? Are they in school? Did they already complete school? What did they study in school? How long have they had the job they do? Do they like their job? A person's career/education background tells you a lot about them!! It lets you know what they priortize, what they like to do, etc. Or, if they don't like their job, then a writer's responsibility is to show a reader what they like outside of their work. What makes them a person.

For instance, Ashton being a physical therapy assistant (in Doggy Style), lets me know that he is usually in a position where he is constantly helping other people and is also constantly on his feet so, by the time he gets back to his apartment, he's probably tired and in need of someone tending after him. This then plays into the personality I gave him in the fic of wanting to be taken care of by somebody outside of himself (Cal). This entirely imaginary career that's only mentioned once in the form of his scrubs informs me as the writer as to how I portray his dynamic with Calum, his interactions at home, and just other components of his personality !!

People are shaped by their experiences and their daily life (ie. jobs, school, friends, family, hobbies) and fictional characters are no different !! To be able to accurately write about someone's life and how they live it in a realistic manner, I need to know as many aspects about that life as I can! And that helps readers connect to them too!! Because, even if I only mention Ashton in scrubs once, just from that one simple throw-away line, a reader knows he has a job, a daily life outside of the apartment, outside of Calum, and outside of just the small body of work they're reading right at this moment !!!

lily knew ashley was a burping pro from the moment she first (accidentally) belched in front of her, but she never fully realized just how good she was until just over a year after they started dating.

it happened when one day, ashley was telling a very important story (aka ranting about a karen she had to deal with at work). she was getting into the story, even going so far as to add dramatic hand gestures and mimic the karen's voice while quoting her. then, right as she was getting to the climax of the story, she felt some unexpected gas rising up her throat. however, rather than pausing, she just continued to tell her story while burptalking. no pauses. no hesitation. no strain. just ashley talking as the belch roared out of her.

lily watched as she did this for twenty whole seconds, until the belch finally came to an end. she didn't even bat an eye when it ended, just finished up her story as if nothing had happened. lily was absolutely speechless. ashely still doesn't know what the big deal was.

I read all of Starlight last night and i just wanted to come tell you how much i absolutely loved it!! it really got me right in the heart as a horsegirl who can't be around horses right now because of life, i love how much your love for them shines in this story. In part 1 when Hazel met Dolly i cried just from the sense memory of it all. I love your Adam and your Matt, and I love Hazel too. I love what's going on with them!!!!!! from a piece where I wanted to explore Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, and Zuko's relationships with food and the concept of hunger, both physical and otherwise:

Azula’s first memory is of hunger.  It should be impossible for her to recall, as young as she was, but the scene plays so clearly in her mind that she thinks-believes-knows it must be real. In her dreams Azula wails, grabbing for her mother and the nourishment she's meant to provide, yowling louder when she realizes no one is there. She has no way of knowing that Ursa is ill, greatly weakened by the birth of her second child and confined to bed in a fitful sleep. She has no way of knowing that her mother’s absence is not by her own design, that she calls out weakly for her daughter just as Azula cries for her.  Azula’s first memory is of hunger, and of that hunger being denied.

Befriending Ashley Graves was no easy task

She made you work for it to say the least

Giving you her homework to do because a good friend wouldn’t let their friend fail.

Some girl was saying stuff about her, so a good friend would go punch her square in her ugly face!

A good friend wouldn’t stare at other people, or make other plans

Ashley was exhausting, yes- and a lot of the time you wonder why you’re even her friend.

You catch yourself wondering that sometimes too…

“Yeah! Fuck off to your whore mothers!”

Your vision was still hazy- only being able to crack it open ever so slightly as to not mess with your black eye. You flinched as a small hand placed itself on her bruised cheek.

“Hold still!” The shrill voice snapped, “Lemme get a look at cha..”

LeyLey hummed, her lips pursing as she inspected your beaten up face. She retracted her hand and reached into the pocket of her overalls, and pulled out a crumbled up bandaid still in the package. She fumbled with the wrapper and placed the bandaid overtop the cut on your chin. It did nothing, but she smiled proudly.

“There! Now if those assholes do that again, just let me know! I’ll make Andy join me!” She grinned. You couldn’t help but smile back.

No one ever stood up for you as a child, and Ashley always made the bullies go away.

Albeit, out of fear- but fear was better than anything

So you stayed by Ashley’s side, because without her….you’d just be a target again. She told you herself.

Being so close with Ashley only mean being close with her brother as well

To an extent

Ashley pitched fits whenever you two hung out without her, claiming you were scheming against her to leave her.

Neither of you would do that

There was a silent agreement between you and Andrew to shower Ashley with as much affection as you both could when you three were together

This is probably how you became so used to their closeness

You and Andrew somehow managed to find common interests outside of Ashley, something she made fun of you two for on a regular basis

You don’t know how, and you don’t know why, but you slowly fell for both of them

It just hit you like a bag of rocks

To say you were subtle would be a blatant lie, so it didn’t take long for the siblings to catch on.

And make note to tease you about it…

“Here, let me help you with that Y/N..”

Sirens went off in your head as Andrew pressed himself against your back, trapping you between him and the counter. He reached over you, grabbing the bowl you had been reaching for. The few seconds he did that felt like an eternity, and you feared your face boiling from the heat that had risen to it. Your brain buffered, not registering that he had left to sit with Ashley on the couch.

Mr and Mrs Graves were out, and normally this led to a movie night the pair would invite you along. It was just a movie, you told yourself, you could handle it.

Oh you could not have been more wrong.

The pair felt far more….touchy than usual- and it was slowly killing you. As you sat, sandwiched between the pair, Ashley clung tightly to your arm. Her nails dug into your skin possessively as she rested her chin on your shoulder. Andrew had his arm over the both of you, claiming to just be resting it. He was also awfully close.

You slowly blocked the movie, and any other sounds out, the only thing being audible to you was the rapid beating of your heart.

You could’ve sworn you died for a second when both of them placed a hand on your thigh.

Both of them had a bet to see how long it would take you to tell them

Neither had anticipated it would be over the phone…

The quarantine hit and you weren’t allowed to see them

The entire thing made you anxious

Parasites in the water supply…

As dramatic as it was, you were worried you wouldn’t see them again

So you called them, confessed everything

And like any good siblings would….they decided to share you <3

They took turns staring down at you fondly from the balcony when you came by to throw them food

They called you late into the night to pester you, Andrew especially when he couldn’t sleep

Eventually security became so tight you couldn’t even go near the apartment without risk of being shot.

And the calls had stopped

You were worried they were mad at you…that they hated you…

Until they showed up on your doorstep one night….
