due to my lack of self control & people enabling me, here are some of the 𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝟑𝟎𝟒𝐓𝐇 𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐏𝐒. honestly, i might make a part 2 at some point, but these are the boys myla will probably mention the most in the verse where she’s a general.

𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐀𝐊𝐊𝐀𝐑. most everyone just calls him commander kar, but a lot of the shinies think he’s super intimidating so they call him by his full name. he was originally super uptight as a result of being unsure if his rank was deserved, & still went by his number when he was paired with myla. she is the one who suggested that he find a name for himself as a way of coping with his anxiety surrounding his position & he chose the name of one of the spires from her home planet. they really bond over myla’s similar worries over being given the rank of general & are very close. kar is the only one out of her troopers who knows that she considered leaving the jedi order, to which he responded that he was very glad she didn’t. some jedi & clones would probably consider their relationship to be unprofessional, as they are really open & casual with each other, but most of myla’s relationships with her troops aren’t exactly typical so theirs doesn’t stand out as much as it would otherwise. kar also makes sure that he’s being professional when in front of their troops, even if myla isn’t. he really acts a lot tougher than he actually is, & can be harder on his troops than he needs to be but it comes from a place of love because he wants them to be the best possible so that they’re able to survive the war (& protect his general when he isn’t with her 👀). basically, he’s the disciplinarian parent & myla’s the fun parent.

during order 66, his shots are the only ones myla doesn’t deflect in time, because she’s so blinded by her trust in him that she’s unable to sense his betrayal.

𝐌𝐈𝐗𝐔𝐏. mixup got his name from constantly messing up orders as a cadet. he’s a good soldier & one of the most creative thinkers in the 304th, but he has a hard time focusing & following more lengthy directives. he’s a shiny when myla is given command over the 304th, & the kaminoans offer to have him decommissioned since he didn’t ‘grow out of it’ as expected. myla obviously declines, & the two actually grow rather close over joking around with each other. he becomes a little brother of sorts to her & fledge, & the three of them get into all sorts of trouble together. myla runs a lot of her plans by mixup, despite his comparative inexperience, or asks him for suggestions when she isn’t able to figure a way out of a situation. not everyone likes that she does this, because mixup is still so new but he quickly earns the trust of the 304th after saving their collective behinds on multiple occasions due to his ingenuity.

𝐍𝐀𝐊. the 304th’s resident medic who will probably have grey hair first solely because myla + fledge + mixup is the perfect combination for a reckless, disaster trio. he obviously got his name from the stories myla tells her troopers about the naklor, & he even paints an artsy rendition of the naklor’s tusks on his helmet. he can be a bit frantic worrying over everyone’s injuries, but also if you aren’t seriously injured then you’re getting no sympathy from him unless you’re outside the 304th. he is tired & figures that if he emotionlessly slaps a bacta patch on it & basically ignores their whining about it then they’re less likely to jump headfirst & armorless into brambles trying to chase a batuuan rat next time. cobalt is the one exception to this rule.

𝐂𝐎𝐁𝐀𝐋𝐓. pretty simply, cobalt blue is his favorite color. he’s part of the 304th’s intelligence unit, & is very good at being stealthy. cobalt is naturally quiet, introverted, & is totally the person who just appears behind you out of nowhere or has actually been standing in the corner the whole time without you noticing. myla likes to talk strategy with him one-on-one (sometimes even without kar) just so that cobalt is more comfortable. the two of them aren’t particularly close, but cobalt isn’t really very close with anyone except maybe nak. nak & myla both understand that he’s more comfortable with less people around & doesn’t like being the center of attention, & he’s super grateful for that even if he isn’t always sure how to show it.

𝐀𝐑𝐂 𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄. he got his name from tangling with a fledgling gundark while he was still a cadet. he’s from the same batch as kar. other than her commander, myla is probably closest with fledge, though their relationship definitely has a sibling-like tone to it that isn’t present between her & kar. they like to make bets on who can take out the most droids, & fledge always swears she cheats despite having kar to back her up. kar has made the executive decision that they aren’t allowed to go on missions together without supervision from literally anyone else, because they’ll end up stowing away on a separatist ship & calling for him to come pick them up three systems away again. fledge also thinks the funniest thing ever is sneaking up behind her while she’s in the middle of a conversation & picking her up around the waist to scare her. myla doesn’t have the heart to tell him that he isn’t as stealthy as he thinks he is.

H13: Favourite Book

Seneng buku bukan berarti suka baca loh ya. Seperti aku ini yg suka beli buku tapi jarang dibaca sampe abis. Jadi ga ada buku yang emang bener bener berkesan buatku, entah malah kujuga lupa buku apa aja yg pernah kubaca, saking dikitnya.

Sebenernya ku lebih suka majalah sih. Dari dulu langganan Majalah Bobo aja sampe kelas 1 SMA. Huehee.. Abis itu baru mulai langganan majalah dewasa. E bentar jangan salah paham. Ku langganan majalah Intisari sama tabloid Rumah (karena dulu sempet pengen jadi arsitek, tapi ga kesampean).

Dulu mah kalo abis gajian tuh ya pulangnya olweys pergi ke tukang majalah distro (disisi trotoar) nongki dulu disana buka buka majalah nak anak sampe majalah dewasa. Suka kalap liat majalah tuh, sampe majalah playboy bola juga kubeli dulu mah.

Namun semenjak gapunya penghasilan tetap ku berenti jajan majalah. Jadi jarang baca n jarang maen ke toko buku. Apadaya kuhanya bisa beli koran PR.

Eh pas taun 2018an nemu majalah indie asal Jogjakarta namanya Folksy Magazine yg terbit 6 bulan sekali apa setaun sekali gitu kalo gasalah. Isinya artsy pisaaan. Seneng pisan pas nemu ni majalah just like 'yang gini loh yang kucari selama ini'.

Eh sayangnya taun 2019 jadi taun terakhir majalah ini terbit :( karena yaa namanya juga majalah indie yg ga ditopang perusahaan besar di baliknya, plus mungkin menurunnya minat rang orang sama media cetak karena udah serba tergantikan sama media online. Yaa jadi aga susah kan buat sustain.

Tapi bagaimanapun baca buku fisik tetep lebih asik dibanding yang elektronik.

Zinezone

As you might’ve known (if you’re following our blog) (and if in any case you weren’t following us… how dare you?), KarMa went to last year’s Zine Orgy and had loads of fun mingling with other local and self-published artists in Los Baños. (We also made a blog about it here.)

Zines (from the word – yes, you guessed that right! – magazine) (also pronounced as “zeen”, not “zayn”) are those little booklets made with letter-sized paper folded in two and filled with the magic of art. It’s what budding artists usually do when they want to put something out there that’s independent and self-published. The process in making such pieces is quite enjoyable to say the least. We here at KarMa have been self-publishing our works through this medium ever since the dawn of time (if time started in 2006) and that’s why it’s always been close to our hearts (naks!).

But going back to Zine Orgy… aside from selling our stuff, we also traded and purchased merch with and from our fellow artists. We hoarded a lot of stuff from the event but one of our favorites would be the zine that, at that given place and time, was unlike any other… and you’re about to find out why.

Liminalist*

Old Mr Webster defines the adjective ‘liminal’ as something that relates to an intermediate state, phase, or condition. An ‘in-between’. But why ‘liminal‘?

Amrie Cruz’s “Liminal” is a… hmm, wait. Is it comics? Is it a graphic novel? Or is it an illustrated short story? Well, we believe that it’s a hybrid of a graphic novel and an illustrated short story. An unfamiliar cross that, because of some trick of fate, works. It follows the story of five uncanny humans: Gab, Lean, Elliot, Lloyd and Rya. These five characters make up Liminal’s “Tropang Subersibo“.

The story starts, with how any other super cool tropa story starts, from a rendezvous and a cool ‘get to know the squad’ sequence. They talk about what’s happening in their lives and their personalities. We still don’t know their ages (aside from what age Rya had her nose pierced – a substantial amount of data can be taken from this information, Ms. Cruz. We will be investigating this) but they all talk about their lifestyles during the first few pages.

Lean is part of a band that makes revolutionary songs. Lloyd is the artsy one. Gab is a journalist and Rya is… Rya… is… we actually do not have the slightest idea but we think she’s cool. Elliot is a hacktivist and apart from that, like Rya, we also have no idea what he does or who he actually is. (Tsk, Ms. Cruz…)

The story continues with Lean talking of collab work with Lloyd for their next album whilst Gab and Rya are talking about the beginnings of a novel. They start to talk Elliot into joining their revolutionary clique. Tackling their circumstances as artists and citizens in a highly commercialized, capitalist, and oppressive society, these uncanny friends team up as the Tropang Subersibo to save the world (and make awesome stuff along the way).

Art-wise, Liminal can be quite minimal (hehe), in the sense that it focuses more on the subjects of the storyline rather than the whole scene. Because of this, it gives off this ‘millenial art’ feels reminiscent of the art we usually see making its rounds in social media. Liminal has this somewhat “informal” feel. It’s a very light read, despite the weight of what it’s discussing. The whole storytelling of Liminal works really well and is enjoyable because of its conversational tone (which is, apparently, quite ‘in the now’ in this generation of literature), like when a friend of yours tells you about his/her day and is totally “hashtag relatable”.

On a scale of one to ten, we’re giving it a Millie Bobby Brown (aka an Eleven. Heh. See what we did there?). We’ll be on the lookout for the next Astigventures ng Tropang Subersibo!
