How would you have fixed/rewrote Shrek the Third to prevent it from obtaining the unofficial title of "so bad, it's better to skip from Shrek the Second right to Forever After"?
Well…
(This isn’t that coherent, I’m just giving a ramble of what I would have enjoyed :D)
As mentioned in my post about the issues with Fiona, I would absolutely make sure, at the beginning of the movie, she is prioritized when it comes to the kingdom needing a new ruler.
Let her have the Royal Pain scene instead of Shrek, where she’s trying to fall in line with the kingdom she grew up in. Holding court, sending the ship off, knighting individuals. I think it would have been beneficial to show her being more capable in a way that wasn’t ‘remember everyone!! She can do fighting!!’ I think that would also be a great time to introduce the princesses. Show that she’s a great ruler, but the rest of the royal crowd has a hard time meshing with her.
I think to still include the journey to Worcestershire, Fiona would step down from her temporary queen position due to the death of her father, and from there, they could go and find Artie. Except for this time, I would bring Fiona on the quest because she’s still 100% capable, even as a pregnant woman. (Listen, she was doing karate and kicking stuff down in the original movie, there was no reason for her to stay behind.)
Lillian would stay behind to protect/rule the kingdom, there’s not much to add there.
I would want Shrek to still have his conflict about being a father since that was interesting (to me, at least,) but with Fiona on the quest, I would handle it differently.
Since, in the original movie, they had no way of discussing the problem and talking things through, I would want a scene that mirrors their weedrat dinner in the first movie where they have a true relationship moment, and it shows their development as characters. They’re open with each other and willing to talk through their problems. Ultimately, it ends in Fiona assuring him that no matter what happens and how terribly it goes, they’ve been through worse, and they’ll be fine parents.
With Charming, I really enjoyed his plan with the villains in the actual movie, so I would keep that. I think to make him a less hated villain I would dive deeper into his relationship with his mother. Yes, he depended on her, but how lost is he without her? He could gain a lot from an independent scene or two showing his struggle that isn’t played for comedic effect.
