i didn’t watch the anime, but i LOVED this live action adaptation. i loved every character in this show, and it was down to him and nami, but ultimately i went with zoro bc i just admire him so much (…also he’s really hot)

3. ANNABETH CHASE — RIORDANVERSE

i’ve been a die hard percy jackson fan for over a decade now and annabeth has always been one of my favorite characters of the entire riordanverse, if not my all-time favorite character. leah sava jeffries is gonna do SUCH an amazing job as annabeth, i already know, and i can’t wait to watch her be amazing, she’s such a star!

4. QUINN FABRAY — GLEE

quinn, one of my problematic faves, you were done so dirty by the writers of this show but you will always be loved by me!

5. YOR FORGER — SPY X FAMILY

first of all, THIS SHOW IS AMAZING! second of all, there has never been a time where i did not wish i was living the life of yor forger.

6. PEETA MELLARK — THE HUNGER GAMES

when i say i hate all men, NEVER am i ever talking about this man right here. he is the only man ever as far as i am concerned.

7. AMY SOSA — SUPERSTORE

i’ve been rewatching superstore lately so i guess it was just on my mind, but amy truly is one of my favorite sitcom leading ladies, and it helps that america ferrera is so funny and so great in this role!

8. ANNE SHIRLEY-CUTHBERT — ANNE WITH AN E

i remember when this show first came out, i had some doubts about it since i really loved the megan follows adaptation. but amybeth really sold me on this adaptation! i think she really embodies everything there is to love about anne and has now become my favorite anne!

9. HALEY JAMES-SCOTT — ONE TREE HILL

ah one tree hill, one of my favorite guilty pleasure teen dramas. it was between her and peyton for my favorite character, but in the end i went with haley, who had won me over from her very first scene.

10. KATARA — AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER

katara is just a badass, plain and simple. one of the most powerful benders in the atla universe, and THE most powerful waterbender in the universe, idc what anyone says.

UHT anon here again hello. I think they’re real too. It’s one of those things where you just know. Like, why else would Quinn have been sitting with Brittana in the library in Mattress, right? I think it’s also why “I could tell by the slightest quiver in Santana’s upper lip which way we were gonna move” is one of my favorite lines. Knowing how the show was written, it was a throwaway line convenient for the situation at hand, but like, the familiarity between these three goes so much deeper than we’re allowed to see. The fact that the first step in Santana’s Britt intervention in 100 was to suggest a UHT number was a nice touch to that as well. Bruh, I could go on about them forever.

Man, Glee really dropped the ball with female friendships. You can count on one hand the number of UHT moments I didn’t mention, and that hurts lmao.

Thank you for the whole message, and in terms of more UHT headcanons I'm not sure if I can do many interesting ones right now but I also don't want to put off answering this any longer, so. In terms of sexual stuff it's just interesting the tension they have and how subversive the idea of a threesome actually is. Because yeah, on the surface it sounds VERY much like a male gaze fantasy like haha three hot cheerleaders how fun but just like how Brittana was transgressive, an UHT threesome would actually be three queer women shutting that male gaze out. Anyway I'm not holding on too tight to the idea of a romantic/sexual UHT polycule, in fact I don't see a threesome happening in canon on most days. I mean, that's not not a fic I've read.

More HCs, hmmm. Well I don't know if I have HCs of any kind, really, more just general thoughts and analysis-type stuff? For example I find it amusing that Quinn and Santana are both obsessed with optics and the high school social hierarchy whereas Britt isn't and yet it comes so effortlessly to Brittany. Just a funny juxtaposition of two girls being so desperate and try-hards and Brittany never really thinking about it much and still having that popularity.

You know, Bryan Ryan does have a point. Will is a teacher because he couldn't become a star and achieve his dream. I also consider that teaching would be a job to fall back on (because there's not much I can do with my degree). In highschool, as soon as we picked our path, our teachers were very frank: "The culture sector is dead-end. You won't earn much and you'll have a hard time finding a job." At the same time, we all knew that if we picked this path, it was because we couldn't imagine doing anything else.

It's weird how much S1 pushes Artina/Tinartie when I remember that I was pretty dead-set on Tike by the end of the show. When does that change? S2? Anyway, Tina and Artie dancing together is cute! We rarely see tap-dancing on Glee. Sadly the scene ends with Artie being a jerk. It's understandable that he's angry but Tina didn't deserve his invective.

His shirt probably says "Fever Dream". You know. What their relationship ends up being at the end of S1.

Nice lighting but more importantly, they give boyfriends vibes and I'm here for it. Wemma was fun because it featured the unrequited love trope. Brill is fun because it's gay. Also they hug just after this screenshot and we love hugs!

When I said that "Physical" was the first Glee cover I added to my playlist, I lied.

We have proof that Sue is into angry sex when she hooks up with Bryan Ryan, and later Will successfully seduces her, which means my Sue/Will ship is actually more likely than I remembered! Anyway, a lesbian actress and a gay actor playing characters hooking up with each other! Quite ironical.

i’m liking tfatws, the second episode was veryyy intense imo but WANDAVISION IS SO GOOD😭 i knew it was going to be my favorite from the really old trailer but it’s really good and i promise it’s not just sitcoms, girl especially cuz you’ll have all the episodes already out- we were having to wait every week😭 BUT ITS SO GOOD I PROMISE HDJSHDJSH lmao reading this i was like “i- the episodes aren’t an hour long” but i feel that, it’s hard for me to watch tfatws bc they are an hour long and i’m like 😐 but wandavision episodes are less than 30mins bc I KID YOU NOT they have the damn 10 MINUTE CREDITS DHDJSJ no i don’t think we’ve talked about this b4 lol but it all depends on the series for me. i binged love island uk in less than a week bc i was so invested and LITERALLY LOVE IT but uh those episodes are like an hour and a half, but say i was binging tfatws (it’s so hard to type that ohmigosh) i honestly would not be able to do it bc of the intensity (you may be like what intensity but if you’ve seen episode 2 by the time you’re reading this.......... isaiah and the scene afterwards is all i have to say, esp me being black it was so tough :/)

Dkdkdkdj so @ Rindfleischet.. blah bla. so it‘s basically just loads of individual words put together/connected and that‘s a really big part of german. so yesterday i had an online Einführungsveranstaltung for uni (like it was a zoom meeting where they just talked about general stuff about the uni and i was really anxious before, idk why, but it turned out absolutely fine so) and that words consists of the two words Einführung (introduction) and Veranstaltung (event) which are also two individual words but you can make a new word (Einführungsveranstaltung, so in english that‘s basically “introduction event“ lmao) by combining those two words. there are obviously some rules like you can‘t just combine random words in a random order but you can basically make infinite words (technically). for example (i feel like i‘m teaching a class just skip this if you don’t care 🙃🙃🙃djdjdkdlns)

for example i could say Einführungsveranstaltungsteilnehmer (which is not underlined with red by tumblr because it is a grammatically correct compound word (i think that‘s what they‘re called?)) which is the words introduction + event + participant, so that word just means “participant of an introductory event“ but instead it‘s one word? i hope that makes sense? dkdkkdksks i mean it makes sense in german but idk if it makes sense to you cause idk if i‘m explaining it very well lmao,

Okay so skdjdjdjddhhddhdhjsk... I used to watch all of my series in German (like H2O) bc obviously they were on german tv so they were german- and i knew that most of these actors i saw on tv were american and i was always SO fascinated that they all learned german for this show??? Like I actually thought they were the people‘s real voices and that these English and American actors were learning german so they could re-record the whole ass show and do everything in german dkdkdldjdjjd... i swear I thought that until I was like 14 omg. Shall I bore you with my unpopular opinions? I started watching glee in March 2020. I’ve rewatched most episodes at least three times, or more and some I just can’t rewatch.

So some character assassination coming from me. And some of these I changed my mind about recently.

Sam - used to love him. His voice though in season 2 and 3 is just awful..... I just began hating him recently because he just cops off with any girl, including a school nurse (wouldn’t she be like prosecuted if this happened, with minor in her care??). then us a complete knob to Ryder in LO, is just such an ass in series 6. Loved Blam - but where was that in series 6 until the last episode??? Also can someone explain to me how he saved the day when he came back in season 3? Or why Will told him to be ND in City of Angels cos they had no leader...(hello??? Wasn’t that Blaine??)

Artie - love his voice and when he’s singing with Tina/Sam/Blaine or Meecedes he is wonderful. . But he’s just another promiscuous idiot. None of his relationships settled well with me. And man, if your job is to spike the punch, then punch use lemonade.

Marley - wet and whiny. The girl needs a backbone. And overrated voice. No Not the New Rachel at all - stop calling her that in fandom, obviously it’s Blaine

Finn - I don’t dislike Finn but he made some poor relationship choices. His balls were on lockdown when Quinn or Rachel was concerned. Loved him in season 4

Well I’m sure most people hate Rachel, so don’t get me started there.

It was literally like, we mended our working relationship with Chord, let’s bring him back to the show! And god, City of Angels actually pisses me the fuck off just for that opening scene. Like I’m sorry Finn is gone, it’s tragic, but all that shit was a fucking joke.

Artie - Agree. Yeah lmao I don’t have much to say about Artie. They didn’t use him like they should’ve but when they did, it was usually dumb relationship stuff or him being an idiot. Like he had sex with Brittany and with Betty but didn’t learn about condoms and STDs until s5?? Yikes. Also didn’t like any of his canon relationships. He does have a nice voice tho!

Marley - Neutral. She was good at standing up for herself against dumb boys. But also she was too passive when it came to the dumb love triangle bullshit lmao. I still love her voice and love her and also the new Rachel competition was stupid in general but Blaine is the star xD Not Marley lmao

Finn - Disagree. But only cause I REALLY do not like Finn lmao. His relationships were terrible. And he was at his best in s4 even tho he still does too much that pisses me off there

Rachel - Disagree. I mean you didn’t really give an opinion here but still. She’s still far from my fave but there are others I hate waaay more. 

Mercedes & Unique - Strongly Agree. Nothing to add. I adore them. Love their voices. They deserved more than what they got

hi idk if you take asks/ opinions but I wanna talk about sth but I have no one to talk about glee and blogs who don’t hate Blaine are rare 😭after rewatching glee for the first time in years during quarantine I realised just how dirty the writers did Blaine. if I remember correctly, he was never supposed to play this big of a part in the series, especially not becoming part of the main cast. He was mostly developed when he was introduced with little to no room for development. [+]

[+] I guess if they had known how popular Blaine would end up being so popular they wouldn’t have done that. I supposed the writers didn’t know what to do with him and just tried but ended up making him whiny and insecure. it bothers me as well that he barely had plot lines that weren’t somehow related to Kurt and thus scarcely existed outside of that relationship. Blaine’s still my fav tho and I doubt that’s gonna change but I'm just upset about all of this and he deserved better

While I agree with the argument that fandom shouldn't take "bi lighting" beyond general glee/personal mirth, I'd like to point out it's only fandom that keeps insisting on reading S9 lighting rules and later sentiments from crew have led opposite. Like, there is not a creative soul on the face of the planet in recent history that has been like “You know that shit Serge said six years and a whole showrunner ago? Same shit still works.” -- that’s fandom.

Perfect example being Meg Fitz recently talking about the way Richard Speight applies color, be that prop or lighting, in his episodes and how you can detect a Speight ep even on Lucifer. Speight wasn't around directing back then.

These things aren't unilateral and, tbh, there's some kind of self indulgent meta fandom crack going on if they think their S9 color scheming still applies the same in an entirely new era of director and showrunner just because the lighting guy is still there.

I'm guessing the offending (and variably offended) parts of fandom doesn't understand that Lighting Guy cooperates with these other departments. Now to clarify, again, this isn't about "bi lighting", it's people pretending that a sheet made 6 years ago still has yellow mean then what it means now.

There are certain things that just *are* in cinema, eg mood lighting and the ilk. Those are almost indisputable because there are psychology purposings to even using color and people have the art pretty figured out.

But this idea that like, because early Carver used blue and yellow with angels to try to associate that to late Dabb era use of yellow or whatever else is a principle case of "do you guys understand how this works". Like I find a lot of comments that assume S9 lighting discussion still holds append the idea "It doesn't look like much has changed" in some capacity and like full stop please stop talking about lighting if you can't successfully play spot the differences.

So anyway the above is literally why I waited like 2 years to write a meta about color because as it was, industry baseline had to be redefined, Serge's *6 year old statement* had to be dated and framed, *and* current color usage discussed. Nobody’s about to catch me building on top of someone’s wobbly house of cards and at this point there’s more misconceptions to disband in this fandom about production or whatever than there is actual information to even discuss anew.

Fandom has this terrible fucking habit of locking on to a node of information and assuming it holds true always and forever just because they don't personally understand the changes and this is like a key example of it.

Like can you imagine people trying to apply statements about Kripke's lighting and set to Carver era even though the two cinematic styles didn't even look like they belonged to the same show? 

Doesn't work, does it. 

Don't do it with Carver and Dabb.

If you do, you’re gonna have a bad time.

Shockingly because Serge casually addressed it as seeming center/mainstay at that point, nobody constructively looked at SPN S1-5 and then SPN 8-11 and went, golly gee, these sure do look like very different film styles. No, they got a statement fairly early in a later showrunner era, that addressed various lighting uses over history, assumed that unilaterally applied to even the result gotten in the show, or that it had been used 5ever, and then act like the same code of law, as taken by S9ish fandom, continues forevermore forward, when it didn’t even forevermore apply backwards.

Stories change unto themselves, much less even if they have different authors, directors, showrunners -- you know, DIFFERENT STORY TELLERS. Different story tellers tell stories differently. Shocking, I know.

If this has somehow missed you, your personal task is to rewatch seasons 11, 12, 13 and realize the light and color work shift as Dabb took power, the most loudest CLAP ON power of it starting in season 13, which is largely my point. The lighting and color scheming in 11 and 12 aren’t nearly as vividly applied and not the same, and it takes only the most MARGINAL observation skills to realize this. If you’re not, well, chasing red car syndrome.

There’s been antis and bitters that talk about red car syndrome, and in a lot of ways they’re wrong -- there’s a huge fucking wealth of canon and textual material supporting Dean and Castiel’s story, so why people go absolutely apeshit bananas over lighting is beyond me, but there *is* an amount of red car syndrome when you just get an idea in your head of what something means, and what it will always mean, and will always go off when you see your metaphorical red car and assume it means the last as the last 20 times. When frankly it hasn’t meant it past the first few.

*It’s very important to remember: Different story tellers tell stories differently.*

Putting on the Waterworks

Fandom: The Mortal Instruments (not the TV show, I can’t stand it)

Prompt: “Don’t worry, I’ve been arrested before. I’ll get us out of this.”

Character: Simon (Platonic friendship)

   It’s 1 in the morning when you enter the city limits. Simon never tells you what the hell has been going on with him, Clary, and their new group of friends, but you constantly find yourself being someone’s chauffeur while they’re at the weirdest places.

   On this particular night, you get a call from Simon saying he ‘got stranded’ in Jersey while taking a Greyhound bus... In the middle of the night. Luckily for him, you’re almost completely used to him and his group’s bull so you play along and drive out to get him.

   Once you finally pick him up and finally see that “Welcome to NYC” sign, it’s over 1 in the morning and you are exhausted.

   Simon can totally tell.

   “I’m sorry I dragged you out of bed.” He apologized for what seemed like the 50th time. That’s one of the things you admired about him. He’s always apologizing every time he calls asking for a free ride somewhere whereas the others that seem to also take advantage of your free time and car seem too much in a rush or too busy to even say hi.

   But you’re also grumpy as hell. “You say that one more time, I’m pushing you out of this car while it’s still in drive.”

   Now that the road looks completely desolate and it’s 1 AM, you take your chances at speeding up a bit and ignoring the limit for a few minutes. Except a few minutes becomes a bit longer and it’s not long until you hear sirens coming from behind you.

   Simon starts to tense up next to you. “Oh man, this can’t be happening...” He agonizes.

   You roll your eyes in boredom. “Don’t worry, I’ve been arrested before. I’ll get us out of this.” Then, looking at your rear view mirror and drying your eyes, you start to feel the pinpricks of tears coming from the corners of your eyes.

   “Oh my god, are you okay?” He asks.

   “Shut up, you just broke up with me and now I have to keep driving you home.” It’s at this point, you finally pull off to the side of the road with the police cruiser following you.

   “I just what? You literally have like the beefiest boyfriend since John Cena.”

   “Shut up and play along, asshole.”

   Now grabbing the packet of tissues in your purse, you start to rub the tears over your face, making your eyes more puffy and your little bit of makeup on at this hour to blot around your eyes.

   The officer approaches your car slowly and, as he does, Simon seems to tense up more and more like he’s scared of the officer.

   Light from the officer shines into the car and hits your face. You keep your head down low, feigning sadness.

   “Is... is there a problem officer?” You ask, looking up slowly, wiping some of the tears away.

   Immediately, he looks uncomfortable and sorry for you and you already know you’ve got him.

   “Well I noticed you speeding a bit back there. A 63 in a 50.” He pauses, shining his light to Simon and showing his face more clearly. He starts to look between the two of you. “Is this boy bothering you, miss?” He softens his voice.

   You shake your head fiercely. “No sir! He’s my boyfr--” You stop yourself again. “I mean... Ex-boyfriend... I’m just... driving him home.”

   He nods again. His face perfectly portrays his emotions. He does not want to be in this situation.

   “Well... I guess I could let you off with a little warning, miss. But you gotta remember to be careful with your driving, always check the speed limit...” He lowers his voice, coming closer to your ear so Simon shouldn’t be able to hear (he does anyway), “And you just remember to not let this guy get you down. You can do a million times better.”

   You begin to cry harder, but joyfully. “Oh thank you so much, Officer...” You look at his name tag in your peripheral vision, “Brock. Thank you so much Officer Brock, I won’t do it again. I’m gonna be very slow, sir.”

   He nods kindly to you, and also gives Simon the stink eye. “Goodnight.” Simon nods back, slinking as deep into his seat as he can, covering his eyes.

   Then he swaggers on back to his cruiser and, once he drives back onto the road and continues down, you resume driving and rubbing off the rest of the faux tears.

   “That was... so... humiliating.” Your friend utters out from next to you.

   “I assume you’ll be better about calling me in the middle of the night then, huh?” You retort back

   “Yeah... I owe you big time.”

   “Hell yeah you do. You and your friends probably owe me something like 100 in gas money and an extra 50 for my patience and silence. And maybe another 20 for the emotional trauma.”

   “Just please get me home without facing that guy again. Felt like he was going to hulk out on me any second.”

   “And I would watch in glee with popcorn.” You smile. “Let’s get you home and get me back into my hunky boyfriend’s arms, please.”

A/N: #2 of trying to reawaken the dying writer in me. This time, we had a platonic relationship between Simon Lewis and Y/N and tey almost get ticketed or arrested for speeding. Also, I just rewatched Mission Impossible: Fallout so I was sorta definitely imagining Henry Cavill as that super beefy boyfriend that reader has but you can imagine him as anyone you want.

TDB Rewatch: Lights Out

Once again - logic takes a hit, as the lights go out, and Glee doesn’t understand, at all, what a normal school would be like.  Especially after a school “shooting” - they’d get those kids home stat.  I just can’t.  This episode is a freakin’ mess.  And I know part of it is that an entire plotline had to be cut and rewritten cause Cory went to rehab.  Still...  I’m not entirely sure it would have made this episode much better.  

Thoughts: 

This is another episode, like Naked, where they try to take something literal (lights being out) and use it for opening up emotionally.  Look - I get it, and I don’t think it’s the worst structure they’ve ever done - especially when they’re attempting to tear down some of the toxic masculinity stuff - but there’s nothing organic when they try to take these bizarre concepts and try to force the emotion out of them.  Why does Kurt and Blaine’s emotional ride work so well and this stuff doesn’t? Cause the plot line is sincere and organic - not because it’s theme of the week. Ug.  

Also - Sam is way out of character so he can play against Ryder.  Sorry Sam that you got thrown under the bus - nothing about him congratulating Sam on being molested feels like Sam.  

How do I feel about all the Ryder stuff in this episode.  Hmmm... I think there are some interesting conversations there to be had if I cared about the character.  Especially about how men are not allowed to feel emotion.  But I don’t care about Ryder.  Sorry.  

The catfishing stuff doesn’t bother me too much anymore, it’s a small piece of the episode.   However - while I agree with Kitty that Ryder is projecting onto “Katie” I disagree that you can’t have meaningful relationships found online (points to y’all <3 <3)  

I feel bad for Kitty in this episode - and I wonder if her story line would have had more weight now during the #metoo movement.  It’s really horrifying, yet a thing that happens way too often.  I also don’t like how easily Ryder brushes her off.  I realize they’re gonna set up Kitty/Artie next episode.  Still.  

Artie, WTF’s up with you buddy? 

You know what the stupidest thing about this episode is, though? (Other than not giving Darren Criss a song on acoustic week) The fact that they’re a glee club.  They’re not supposed to have instruments anyway.  They’re supposed to be using only their voice.  This show has forgotten it’s original premise so hard at this point it’s ridiculous.  

Everybody Hurts, We Will Rock You, and The Longest Time are great though.  

Oh bb Blaine - I miss you as a functioning character.  But your eyes during Everybody Hurts. 

Hello Darren Criss doing aerobics!! 

The Sue stuff? I really don’t care.  Little Girls is fine - I realize Jane Lynch was doing Annie at the time.  But, the number is super weird if you really pay attention to what’s going on during it. 

Coach Roz is annoying in this episode - and I usually enjoy Coach Roz.  I’m guessing this is what was written in when they took out the Nightbird searches for the truth stuff.  

God - I’m so sad we didn’t get that plot line. 

Meanwhile, in New York. 

I’m sad that Isabelle’s last appearance focused on Santana and not Kurt. Even if I get that Santana hasn’t had a plot line in a while. 

I’m glad someone remembered Kurt’s dad - just in time for the next episode.  

At The Ballet is too long, especially since it’s lacking emotional weight - though probably put in their fully to make up for whatever it is they cut.  

BBKurt!! 

Rachel was the star of her ballet class and yet dance is the class she struggles with the most.  Sure. 

You know, it’s been six years - and I still don’t really get the purpose of the meta Chris and Darren line.  It’s fine.  It’s been six years.  It doesn’t matter.

February 5: Thoughts on The 100 2x03 Reapercussions

I am very tired and I should sleep but instead I’m going to bring my The 100 rewatch project out of hiatus yet again with Episode 2x03: Reapercussions.

I miss Anya so much!!!!! This is mostly my Dichen Lachman obsession showing but also the way she gives Clarke that ‘yeah, whatever’ look when Clarke says she’ll get her out of the cage... your Grounder fave could never.

The show honestly peaked with S2 and after this it should have abandoned all attempts at edginess because nothing will ever be more Pure Nightmare Fuel than the Mount Weather Grounder Cages.

Clarke/Anya: the ship that almost was.

So when Clarke takes Anya out of the prison room, she opens a door that says “End Containment Area” and underneath that it says “U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Mount Weather Containment Protocol.” And people really thought JRoth made this up omg learn some history.

Considering how they left things (Anya literally trying to kill her and all her friends) it’s actually pretty impressively selfless and magnanimous on Clarke’s part to not just rescue her, but immediately and unthinkably rescue her. On the other hand, Anya feels some remorse for leaving her people whereas Clarke’s like ‘here are some clothes [even though those random bandages are holding up pretty well??], let’s get a move on!’ (I know she intended to come back for them and she was being smart and practical but from the pov of, say, Jasper or Monty, this is cold as hell of her.)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: early S2 Clarke is Peak Clarke: smart, sly, practical, brave.

Byrne mentions Earth Skills teacher “Davis” as being part of the search team for Bell et. al. My question: how many Earth Skills teachers did they have lol?

I fucking love this crashed-ship aesthetic omg I forget how much I love it and then I see it again....

“On the Ark, you did anything you wanted, without a second thought about the consequences.” Like mother, like daughter.

I ALSO miss Jasper and Maya. I’m probably like the lone person out there who still remembers them fondly but they were basically perfect because they were sweet but with the potential for a lot of darkness as well, my favorite combination.

WHERE’S MY ART SCHOOL JAYA AU?

So actually fun fact, that isn’t how the art work would have been stored in Mount Weather. They had special containers for the paintings to protect them and like a special cart thing to transport them quickly from their old homes to the bunker I read a book.

No one ever characterizes him this way sufficiently imo but Monty is really quite uptight in a way. Like first: don’t cockblock him man. And second: just chilll. This is probably why he used to smoke weed.

“Trouble? It’s Clarke. Whatever she’s up to, I’m sure she can handle it.” I mean.... he’s not wrong.

Except for the part where she’s covered in dead bodies. But even then...

So I always felt like the main point of the Reapers was as kind of a zombie police force for Mount Weather: to keep the Grounders scared of the Mountain, so they won’t poke around in it too much. Though of course they also collect Grounders, which is helpful, since the Mountain Men can’t walk that far from their home base (and, as stated, they probably want to keep most of that area Grounder-free anyway). But it occurs to me now that a third use of the Reapers is like dead-body collectors? The Mountain dumps the dead bodies out the trap door, and the Reapers take them away and eat them. So gross and efficient all at once. Mount Weather’s motto basically.

Murphy and his creating-a-distraction stones are still one of the funniest jokes this show has ever pulled, though if it were a quicker reveal after “something like that” it would be funnier.

Never mind, Bellamy appearing out of the bush is true underrated comedy gold,

That said, I feel like everything outside of the Mount Weather and Clarke stories here is filler.

Love! That! Ship!

Major Byrne says that Kane is on the verge of losing control of the camp but... I dunno.... everyone seems to be working together pretty well? Maybe if they had diversified the cast a little, not in terms of yet more Grounders but, like, non-leaders of the Ark, that would be more clear????

Okay, well, admittedly, when the Grounder prisoner is brought in they do start a mini-mob, lol. Also one of the delinquent’s fathers is shot, it would be cool if we knew who he was?? ETA: and then he dies and Abby’s like “does he have any family?” lol he just said that his son was one of the 100 so like obviously he does??

The costuming people, like the set people, really are the geniuses of this show. I love Clarke and Anya’s outfits, and Clarke’s hair somehow being both grungy and beautiful like THAT’s the apocalypse style I wanna see.

Also they absolutely 100% would have gotten together in the S2-S3 hiatus if Anya hadn’t been killed off.

“You saved my life because you needed me” IS true but she also did it absolutely without hesitation, even knowing Anya really quite truly hates her, so this speaks either to some foolhardy bravery mixed in with her practical thoughts, or just straight compassion, or both. I guess that sort of is a Clarke thing. She can be a grudge holder (seriously don’t tell me she isn’t: Wells????) but her grudges are NEVER more important than hard-nosed practical problem-solving.

Time for some gratuitous torture. Honestly, I like Season 2, it’s probably my favorite season, but it has some MAJOR filler problems. Like when it’s good it’s THE BEST but then other times it just doesn’t know how to fill 40 minutes so it resorts to pointless diversions (like Bellamy rappelling down the side of a mountain to save a character who is literally never seen again? for some reason?) or just straight out ugly violence for screaming’s sake (Raven’s surgery, Raven’s Grounder torture, Abby’s shocklashing, etc.) Like honestly I can’t even watch this. I’m just gonna browse tumblr until it’s done.

The Arkers really like the concept of “confessing” don’t they?

Like okay I’m not done WHAT IS THE POINT of this? It all but kills the whole Kabby vibe (I still lowkey ship them but sometimes I think...why?), it’s truly painful to watch, and it has no plot purpose AT ALL not even world-building because, lol, we know the writers don’t care to flesh out Camp Jaha in any real way.

Murphy is taking such sad glee out of instigating Finn’s madness/violence. The Luci of The 100 for sure.

This Bellamy story line is boring though I’m sorry. Some of these scenes (the Clarke or Mount Weather ones) I could watch a million times but this is like... kay, I know what happens already. So.

“There are some lines you can’t uncross.” I mean I think this show has actually shown that’s pretty untrue since people get over almost everything pretty fast. There’s always another horrific thing to do and/or experience!

Yeah my bitterness is seeping in.

Anyway when you come into an interrogation knowing what the “right” answer is, you’ll never learn anything, take note, stupid teenager boys + U.S. law enforcement.

Like honestly this Grounder is 500000x smarter than they are. He saves himself and rains gunfire and destruction upon his enemies. (Well, saves himself for a few minutes--but at least he got to cause harm to those he hates!)

“You thought I was the crazy one, huh?” Was Murphy ever crazy, though, or was he just coldly vengeful?

Speaking of coldly vengeful, Byrne could have been a potentially interesting character? Maybe? I’m not really into the type but as I said I want more Arkers wherever I can find them. And Kane needs real opposition. I have sympathy for him to a degree, but I also think he ultimately weakens rather than strengthens himself.

I love when Monty calls bullshit on stuff. “I can’t see Clarke? Try and fucking stop me, bitches.”

Jasper has such a big heart. Truly the emotional core of this friendship.

I like how Kane speaks as if his “diplomatic mission” of adults is so vastly different than Bellamy and Finn just going off on their own I mean, Byrne is little better than Finn? They’re both easily frustrated and fond of torture? It’s just that Byrne understands a chain of command--barely--that’s literally it.

How does it make literally any sense at all to shocklash a person one hour and make her the Chancellor the next? Like you’ve just encouraged the populace to think of her as nothing special, not above the embarrassing public application of extreme pain--but yes by all means expect them to fall into line behind her leadership. I mean I guess this sort of works if she was already somehow beloved (I guess I’m supposed to just believe that?) and now more sympathy has been generated for her--but such sympathy would seem to come at the expense of Kane. It would seem to be the opposite of what he, or really Byrne, was going for with that disgusting display. But whatever memory is a fiction I guess.

And they have this swelling-music romantic eye-fuck goodbye like??? He was just beating you!! JUST NOW!

What I’m getting out of Murphy advocating for killing the Grounder: first, he has a clear, cold, practicality not unlike Clarke, and two, he still thinks of the delinquents as his friends--how sweet. Two days ago he was killing them, holding them hostage, and stealing their ammo before a huge battle but still. Bygones.

This is not a great ep. for Bellamy leadership lol.

Finn executes a man, while wearing Clarke’s watch, in the place they had sex. Seems...symbolic?? IDK it’s late lol.

I miss Nyko a lot but also now that I’ve seen (part of) Slasher I’m not entirely sure I can ever see Ty Olsson in the same light.

Wouldn’t it be funny if they were literal brothers? Because I always assumed this was metaphorical but...was it? WAS IT?

Weird note to end on, I know. If patterns hold, it’ll be another 2-3 months before I do this again but I’ll try to be a little more on the ball about it.

Idk, I think we’d have fewer narrative problems with characters discovering that they’re gay and then being locked IMMEDIATELY into a relationship with one character, and the fandom being completely heartbroken when they break up or inevitably swap spit with someone else if...

More showrunners considered from the beginning that gay people exist and allowed the characters to have a few misfires before meeting and starting things with their ENDGAME (hate that word). 

Pretty much all over the place. Glee, Supergirl, (lbr) FRIENDS (even though they gave no attention to Carol’s lesbian awakening so no cheating), Wynonna Earp, The Bold Type, etc etc etc.

God, this got so long.

There was no excuse for Melanie and Lindsey cheating on each other (especially how not sorry Lindsey was for cheating on Melanie during the latter’s pregnancy), or Bette and Tina’s, but you have to assume that for Queer as Folk and The L Word, they were just mimicking soap opera drama. The latter was never very well written, and the characters changed personality roughly once per season.

For the others, if it plays the same way every time, it’s because each show is giving only a certain amount of time to each couple and cheating is such an easy trope to reach for... especially when the characters have only ever been with each other... That’s not the only “REALISTIC” thing that might happen, but it’s one of them. So this situation exists as a mix of laziness and homophobia. It’s not far off from the choice to kill off a flamboyance of lesbians on every show... They don’t know what else to do with the characters. 

Granted, coming back to The Bold Type, I can tell they are actually trying to Do Something, and we can’t fault them as much as other shows for not devoting a lot of time to the plot and characters because everything else has a damn hour to work with, and The Bold Type only has half an hour. (It’s like when I cut some slack for Steven Universe having its characters move on from their HUGE ISSUES very quickly... because most of the time, the show runs for 11 fucking minutes.) Thus, to do ILUs, set up interest from Kat, have the moment of indiscretion, a confession, separation, and conversation, within like three episodes... 

It’s rushed, man. And I’m really disappointed by all the things we could’ve had exploring Kat’s sexuality besides this. I’ve literally never seen a representation of a lesbian/bisexual/queer woman connecting with the community for the first time in a lesbian bar and talking with her partner and getting to share that joy. I’ve seen gay boys get it occasionally (even Glee made it a horrible moment, but we all know Glee should’ve been titled Torture), women, never. No cool bars, no open dyke nights with slam poetry or acoustic guitars, no art showings.... like we do have culture outside of being unhappy. I’m hard up for Queer Joy instead of Queer Angst.

But I’m not going to say The Bold Type should be canceled because they stepped into this situation, nor am I going to hate Kat as a character. Honestly, I didn’t have much of an emotional reaction. It’s what I expected. How else are women characters going to have drama if they don’t cheat on each other?? Except maybe the drama that Kat and Adena have addressed already this season already... /snark 

Maybe when I go to rewatch the season, I can muster up a little emotion other than disappointment, annoyance, and feeling bad for Adena to be in this situation. I mean, when you’re thrown out of the narrative, it’s hard to really assess it, so I didn’t even bother with a write up after I watched.

It’s not really possible to evaluate how “well” the writers are handling the plot until we see the rest of the arc, but I will say, as much as I hate the plotline, they’ve put more nuance into it, and held back on more horrible behavior than I’m used to writers pushing onto the characters in this kind of situation. I stg, Lindsey was so caught up in her exploration of her sexuality that she couldn’t give a fuck how Melanie felt. Blaine straight out blames Kurt for not being in the state when he decided to fuck someone else, and it was clear he did it on purpose to hurt Kurt. Santana broke up with Brittany preemptively because she knew she was probably gonna screw another girl at college. Waverly hasn’t even had a second to address what happened with Rosita since you know, Nicole almost dying... alternate reality... end of the world... demon rising... her niece being born... But when are she and Nicole actually going to sit down and address that Waverly kissed someone else and Nicole HAS A WIFE????

I appreciate that Kat came forward with what happened immediately, and while what happened was about her, telling Adena was about Adena. She doesn’t blame Adena for her reaction. She doesn’t demand things from her. She lets her have her time. And Adena doesn’t go low and attack Kat. Of course, Adena would never, but that’s the way this is typically written. And they say you can find out as much about a couple’s strength by the way they fight as by the way they are day to day. Kat holds back and listens. Adena needs space and is tentative and deliberate. Neither wants to hurt the other. That’s so clear. They want to preserve the feelings of the other, and they don’t want to give up what they have, in spite of this obstacle.

I think that’s really important. That’s the reason they could get through this. Yes, Kat may be curious about what it would be like to work her way through the lesbian scene of New York... but she doesn’t HAVE to. That’s not a GIVEN, that in figuring out her sexuality, she has to get hands on and fuck every willing lady that crosses her path. Trust that in the rural area I grew up in, I figured out my lesbian nature on my own fucking no one. Granted, I’m more of an introvert, but it isn’t like I didn’t have interest in girls I met when I was in college.

But that girl was dating someone, and I didn’t try to flirt with her anyway, and she didn’t cheat on her girlfriend. Not everyone in the lesbian scene is just waiting to pounce on the “fresh meat.” Just... fyi to any lesbabies out there. There’s no destiny to these interactions. There’s many ways this can go down. I guess it’s nice that Kat was so welcomed, honestly. I’ve been to lesbian bars that were INCREDIBLY cliquey. No one you didn’t know was going to talk to you. One woman (a decade or two older than me) tried to teach me how to dance (leave me alone, I’m awkward and I’m okay with that).

So, yeah, I’m tired of the one story being told over and over. But at least Kadena act like adults in their relationship, rather than spiteful little assholes. I’ll see how well TBT manages to tell this one because Kat and Adena are worth the time and emotional investment.

to dream the impossible dream

Would've been my Glee Club audition song if I'd had one, (and been allowed to pick my own).  I think I prefer never having had a Glee rendition at all to the near-escape we had in this episode of watching it performed by Will Schuester.

(Gonna talk thematic stuff here, and save all my Jesse/Rachel/Shelby thoughts for an upcoming episode.)

"I can't do this, so I will do that instead" - finding new dreams, on getting up from failure or just too much contact with reality, and finding out what your original dream is like, up close - is a theme in fiction that's near and dear to my heart.  "You just keep going"…

So I love that Artie picks another dream - one that, through the years, he does more and more of, and, it seems, falls in love with.  … it is bullshit, though, that he's the only Glee club member to have a story like this, and that it happens because he's in a wheelchair, and because he's in a chair he "can't dance."  Ali Stroker can dance!  And Artie - as he says years later - does have some pretty great moves…

I enjoy, also, the transition from Tina/Artie to Tina/Mike that we get in the last number of this episode.  ("Dream A Little Dream Of Me," by the lyrics, sounds like a guy who's not keeping his girlfriend - though, of course, neither Tina nor Artie (nor Mike!) know that they're breaking up yet.)  And Tina and Mike start out by enjoying doing things together, and that's lovely - and Tina and Artie were friends first, too, and Tina has NEGATIVE SENSE OF BOUNDARIES OMG (so I guess that's a consitent character trait!), but I do love, in this ep, how Artie calls her on it and pushes back against - you were pushing me, JUST GO, NOW.  (See this is why I love shitty behavior, in stories, it leads to STORY.)  And he likes her too much so he forgives her, whatever, it's cool.

The tap-dancing is really pretty.  And Tina wanted to be a performer, back then - but she never nails down her dream, more specifically, nor an endgame romance, either ;).  I like that - at least someone should be at loose-ish ends in their early mid twenties!

As some of this discussion implies, though… I was generally frustrated by Glee's treatment of dreams, all through the show.  No, dreaming of being a singer, dancer, actor, etc., isn't an "impossible" dream - plenty of people are those things! - but… there are hundreds or thousands (maybe more) times high school kids who want to be, say, a professional singer than there are professional singers.  "Success is possible, but not very likely, and may involve lots of less-than-glamorous dues-paying work before you break in, if you ever do" - it's not all or nothing, not Will or Bryan Ryan, there is so much space in between.  Some fics here and there understood this, but Glee's heightened reality so rarely did.

Now I'm gonna have to talk about Will Schuester…

And I just made the connection from "Bryan Ryan by all rights ought to be Javert, there are many male roles in Les Miz, it's not all Jean Valjean and townsperson (though I was a factory girl myself), again, see, not all just winning or losing," to… wow, Bryan Ryan IS Javert, isn't he.  That is his role.  Trying to enforce the cruelty of the "respectable" world.  A very self-hating Javert, but hey, "I am from the gutter too!"

Anyway.  Will Schuester.  And the way that teaching can be a totally valid thing to do that wasn't your first dream, but something else you find and love when you fail to make it as a perfomer… but Will is just not a good teacher.  So he's not a great example of that story, but there'll be plenty of chances to discuss his shortcomings later.  Because: what I really wanted to talk about here was "Piano Man."

Everyone always says it's a sad song.  But - I do not agree.  Some, at least, of the customers, "I believe this is killing me," "drink they call loneliness," etc. - sure, they're sad.  But the narrator…?

I think this is one of those examples I've been discussing, the things that aren't generally considered A DREAM that one starts out with, but can still be, for people who do them.

"Sing us a song you're the piano man, sing us a song tonight…"

The patrons ask the piano player what he's doing there; it's not a glitzy job, and it probably doesn't pay all that well.  He's not A STAR.  But to me?  Playing songs specifically for the people who come to see you, people you know, people whom you make feel better - damn.  It's better than all the star power in the world.

(Really this should be in my review of Blaine playing "Piano Man" and why I love it so much but it's thematically relevant here, it's my take on the song in general, and, um, I didn't wanna have to wait till season five, okay.)

I can't believe I used I dislike this episode. Ok, not dislike, but for some reason I wasn't too particularly thrilled about it? But, as I told myself, I'd rewatch the entire show, including the episodes that had me tearing my hair out in frustration, and while this was never that bad, I seriously don't get why I disliked it now. Because it had. Me. Laughing. Every. Few. Minutes. Which is just so much of a fricking big deal because we just don't get episodes like that anymore!!!! But anyway, to talk about the actual episode First off, hats off to Jared and Jensen, for abso-fricking-lutely Killing. It. I guess cuz it's been such a long time since I've last seen the episode, but Jared was the most adorable puppy in this, and woah my fricking god whooowee did I not realize exactly how his face went during the 'I lost my shoe scene'. Needless to say, I lost it as well. And then Dean, haaaaaa omg he's like, such an older brother in this episode it just tore through me!!! Like he's torn between caring for his brother - helping him up, making sure he's ok every time he falls or Sam is suddenly quiet or whatever - but also between being like 'seriously' - for example, when he falls in those thieves' house, and he doesn't even bother turning around, just waiting for the clamor to go down before asking with the slightest hint of exasperation if Sam's alright, which was just. Amazing. And god back to Sam and his almost childlike petulance and all, especially when the AC that he was nowhere even close to bursts into fire and he goes all 'aw come on!!' - you can't help but at least grin at his performance throughout that scene - and he just kills his performance, Jared, with his facial expressions morphing perfectly through shock, horror, getting startled, and all that until he knocks himself out!!!! And back to Dean - and his almost childlike glee outside appearance wise - because you can never convince me that he wasn't worried about his brother whatsoever-he tells Bella in a brief moment of seriousness "my brother's gonna die" and you can just tell how much he's just. Not. Going. To let. That. Happen - throughout the situation - taking advantage of when Sam got the rabbits foot, by using him to win lottery tickets, and then when he got it, to, of course, save his brother in the most dramatic way possible (but honestly, that moment in Bella's apartment. When he enters - and what is it with me, Dean, and sticky notes that I just find absolutely hilarious??? Read; 12x11, 'witch killing bullets' - and that amazing note - which how did he even get the time for - reading 'then around', brilliantly placed and timed, if a bit too weirdly perfect at the timing - and then finally his dramatic exiting, what with Bella's inability to shoot Dean) But ooh does that come to the dilemma of omg Dean can't get shot but Sam can and cue older brother's incessantly crazily over protective rage!! And through all that, he still manages to display his smartness with the ability to think fast in dire situations (1x05, to this day, turning the mirror around on Mary herself, which I doubt anyone else would have been able to come up with that quickly) by throwing it to her. Sure, if she was thinking right, she would have made sure not to catch it and maybe dodge.. but ooh nicely played last moment of luck for Dean by making sure she catches it, eh? And on a last point, the dude Gordon hires, Kubrick? Wow.. haha I remember thinking that guy was just really weirdly religious or whatever (and honestly no offense meant to those who are religious, seeing as I am as well), and that moment when even Gordon goes "...ookaaay...", you can't help but fricking crack up, still caught up in the humor of the previous scene of Dean going all 'SON OF A BITCH!!' At finding out Bela stole the tickets and Sam just grinning in amusement. But wow... I thought that he was just weird or maybe yeah it was like there was a higher power or whatever, I didn't linger too long on the thought, too caught up with being at the moment of the show, but now, I can't help but be like, mentally smacking myself cuz hello? Dean literally answers it in the end - "no. Not destiny. Just a rabbits foot." Which just, ouch, cuz dang that rabbits foot led Kubrick's hunting partner to choose and find Sam's face on the Biggerson's(?) page, for Sam to end up in the same motel where they're staying in their RV... and of course, for him to pull down the curtain and reveal himself to Kubrick. Which just, now that I think about it, I can't help but raise my eyebrows and grin in skeptical amusement at this man's choice to look at this as all being the work of god, because let's face it. Overshadowing is a major factor in this show, yes... but I highly doubt Chuck would have been much invested in this particular moment... And huh. Now that I know what happens, and can actually take the time to enjoy the show instead of being too caught up in 'omg what's gonna happen next I needa see the next episode nowomgomgomgwhosgonnadiewhosgonnaliveidkthesuspenseiskillingmeomg' I kinda wish Bela and Dean hooked up? Idk.. I mean yeah, believe me, when I say I hated her so bad I wanted her dead, but of course, the Supernatural writers have got to make you favor most villains before killing them off, or at least making you go a bit soft on them (Crowley.. Rowena... hell even Lady Toni Bevelle whom I've still got mixed feeling about) but honestly, that moment when, on a light note real quick - ha. Ha. Dean made a model face at her when he's like "despite knowing what's going on in he real world you still become a thief" or something along those lines - but on a more angsty note, and coming back to - Overshadowing!!!! (I suddenly doubt if I'm using the right word) Bela says "We're all going to hell. Might as well enjoy the ride" and of course, at the moment we're thinking about how she must have unintentionally literally implicated Dean... but she also. Meant. Herself. Which just. Wow. So.. yeah. WishshegotatasteofDeansothatshereallywouldhavebeenabletoenjoytheride. Yup. That's all for now.

TDB Rewatch: Hold Onto 16

This episode isn’t great, but it’s not bad - not in the way the the past couple have been.  But man - ever since it was brought up on the podcast, I can’t help but think this way about season 3 - the whole thing seems to be on autopilot.  This episode wraps up the first arc (first 1/3) of season 3 -- what wasn’t wrapped up in IKAG, and there’s no weight to any of it.  Everything wraps up exactly as you’d expect - and what’s more, none of it seems to have any real emotional weight.  These plot lines are now over - but does anyone really care? 

Thoughts: 

Starting off with what was entertaining about the episode... Kurt and Sebastian squaring off is fun.  

Kurt’s faces during Red Solo Cup

Blaine’s scene with Finn where he’s boxing.  (Idk - Darren looks super hot in this scene - and that’s not something I say very often in general so, um, yeah.)  

Speaking of the Finn v Blaine thing - how nicely that is wrapped up in a couple of scenes.  It never really went anywhere or did anything - even though it might have been interesting to actually build on it.  I am especially eyeroll-y at yet again Finn making another speech where he looks good and everything is okay again. 

Meanwhile - they need to have star power so they... get Sam?  I mean really?  Look - I like Sam, and I’m glad they figured out how to get him back on the show, but being used as a secret weapon feels a little weak, tbh.  Especially when later the Treble Tones ladies are gonna claim that’s why ND won Sectionals.  

Also - they’re deciding their set list a week before again.  Ug, this continues to drive me crazy.  Didn’t anyone on the writing staff actually participate in a glee club? 

Rachel and Finn’s faces when they find out Sam is a stripper are quite priceless though. 

Oh - and Sam’s stuff with his parents are glossed over in a single scene and we never really hear about it again.  

Meanwhile still - we get the end of Quinn’s “crazy” story line.  And god, I’m glad it’s over because it’s just as awful up until the end as it was during the whole thing.  First of all - the minute Sam get in she throws herself at him and it’s like -- groan -- and Sam’s magical speech snaps her out of the crazy.  Then there’s the whole Shelby thing - where she confides in Rachel (okay?) and Rachel has to tell her not to destroy another person’s life.  And then - inspired by Rachel - Quinn decides she’ll go to Yale and maybe be a performer?  Ug - I’m done even thinking about this.  

The Shelby stuff in general has such a weak wrap up.  There’s no real final scene between Shelby and Puck (so I guess the end of that was in IKAG? Awkward).  And then she gives Quinn some weak advice before...  well, not ever being around again until her final appearance in season 4.  It -- just feels like a complete waste of time, tbh.  

You know - at least we don’t have any Sue in this episode.  That’s refreshing tbh. 

Oh - and I can’t believe I actually almost forgot but -- Mike and his Dad story line wraps up with Tina going to bat for Mike and inspiring Mike’s dad to come around and they all live happily ever after.  I wish I cared more, I really did.  But I don’t.  :/  

Oh! Random thought - Rory remains a pervert - as he talks about how girls dancing and moving for practice is too distracting... 

So, sectionals.  Lindsay Pierce remains a great singer, and I’d totally take her over Rory.  The Treble Tones song was good, I liked it.  ND set is was fine - I’m not a huge MJ fan, but I like the arrangements and that everyone had small parts.  It felt like **gasp** a real glee club.  

However - my issue with these competition episodes is that taking twenty minutes for music leaves the actual plot crammed up and there’s never any tension anyway.  Not gonna be able to relive season 1 guys.  Sorry. 

So.  This whole theme of hold onto 16?  I just...eh.  I mean - of course there are all these seniors, and this is the time for acknowledging that things will be different.  And yeah - I think in general, you should enjoy the present more.  But 16 is not a time period I’d ever want to go back to, tbh. 

I really love the last song - We Are Young.  Not only does it sound nice, but it reminds me a little of pre-season 3 when the show was a lot more fun to watch.  We’re in the era of - I miss when this show was overall entertaining and not caught up in these heavy or awful story lines.

TDB Rewatch: Dream On

So - every time I get to this episode, not gonna lie, I get a little bored.  Cause you know - THERE’S NO KURT!  Obviously priorities.  So this time - I did something interesting.  I paid attention to how this episode was filmed.  I kinda wondered - it was famed director Joss Whedon directing, and I wanted to see if anything was different.  

And, you know, there was a little bit, to the point that I could tell it was someone different doing the directing.  (God - have I really gotten to that point?)  I think he must have had a budget because a majority of scenes were not in standard sets -- only 2/12 choir room scenes!  He also plays a lot with camera angles and lighting.  Looking at it from a production manner - it does seem a bit different than a lot of the other episodes (Which RIB directed a lot of in the first season).  However, that doesn’t stop Whedon from doing what ever director of Glee does and has it rain while two people are talking in the car.  

And yes - I focused a lot on the technical aspects because I still find this episode a bit boring.  I’m sorry! It’s funny to me that this episode was so critically acclaimed.  I mean I get it, I do, but I wish I cared more.  

Anyway. Thoughts: 

Previously on Glee - nothing that actually pertains to this episode. 

Mentions: King’s Island Parade, Prostate Cancer, Daydream Believer, and Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.   Interesting.  

Molly Shannon has another pointless cameo.  

So.  Neil Patrick Harris.  I love Harris - I wish I liked Bryan Ryan more.  I just didn’t find him funny? 

And while at this point in the series, I think the whole idea that you shouldn’t give up on your dreams is optimistic - knowing that the show is going to end up so performance aspect driven, it sour the whole thing a little bit.  

I did like Dream On and Piano Man.  (I liked this version of Piano Man over Blaine’s.  I’m sorry!)  

There are few times when I think Matthew Morrison is genuinely enjoying himself on this show.  I get the vibe that this episode was one of them. 

Speaking of Will -- I didn’t actively hate him this episode.  And I think his character would have done better if he had more adult male friends.  

(Oh - and I loved the throwback to the early 90s.  Ah memories.) 

However - I still wish they didn’t frame Will’s story about giving up his dreams so the kids can do theirs. 

GOOD TEACHERS ARE NOT FAILURES AT OTHER THINGS.  THEY TEACH BECAUSE THEY WANT TO.  GOD DAMMIT GLEE. 

Let’s all take a second and think about Bryan Ryan and Sue having sex.  You’re welcome.  

(where’s my fanfic on that one ;)) 

As amusing as the scene is between Ryan and Sue -- it annoys me that Glee always pits the arts vs sports, and they’re both valid and helpful for kids.  They could do both or one, but it’s wrong to discredit either.  

Meanwhile, plot 2..... Oh, yeah this episode had three distinct plotlines.  And it works nicely because of the extreme focus.  However, you lose some of that brilliant Glee crackiness and humor when you silent the background characters to the point that they’re not even shown.  

Oh and this episode has the same issue as Hairography.  There’s a theme -- dreams.  And omg - shot every time the word *dream* is used.  It’s a /little/ on the overkill side. 

Jesse and Rachel and the dream out of nowhere that is the most interesting part of this episode.  

I still ship St. Berry - even if they kinda retconned Jesse’s motivations.  

“ Are you saying that your fathers impregnated Patti LuPone in the Marriott in Akron? Was Mandy Patinkin in on this?” ~Jesse

I don’t really understand Shelby.  I realize why this happened - as Lea and Idina do look like they should be related.  And their duet on I Dreamed a Dream is really moving.  But I think since they literally go -- oh, whoops, nevermind Shelby doesn’t want a daughter makes all of this set up seem a little pointless.  

Again - I kinda wished I cared more than I do.  

And then there’s Tina and Artie.  It’s sweet and one of the better Artie story lines.  I don’t know why I just find it the most boring.  Poor Artie - I’m sorry!! 

Tina and Artie work for me here.  Even if I feel like the seeds are planted here for Tina and Mike.  

Artie leans his dream towards directing after this.  Still wish all the other kids could venture out and find things they liked beyond just performing arts.  

Um, yup I guess that’s all I got to say on that.
