Anime Summer 2023

Overall I thought this was an enjoyable season with quite a few high quality shows in it and a few surprises.

Here's my thoughts on Summer 2023 anime, from most favorite to least.

Bungou Stray Dogs Season 5

How could anything else be at the top? While I think overall this was a little weaker than S4 for me -- I really like some of the character work in S4, particularly Ranpo and Yosano's pasts -- this was an absolute roller coaster ride from start to finish. I can't help but admire BSD's ability to throw absolutely ridiculous and over the top plot points one after another and still make it all work. It came to a reasonably satisfying conclusion as well. BSD in general has shot up to become one of my favorite anime of all time and this season didn't disappoint at all.

Highlights: Ranpo saving everyone's asses. Sigma just wants a home. Bram just wants tunes. Aya is the MVP. Chuuya and his Spirit Halloween vampire fangs. You can't kill Dazai in a way that matters.

Complaints: I can only hope we're getting some light novel movies or else we're going to be waiting a long time for more BSD.

My Happy Marriage

Romance in anime tends to be hit or miss, but this one was incredibly refreshing. Far too many romance stories just don't do a good job of showing how the leads are meant for each other, but this show was delightful whenever the leads were on screen. I loved how they were able to talk to each other sensibly and how gently Kiyouka treated Miyo's trauma. Plus, it was beautifully animated.

Highlights: Kiyouka burning the Saimori house the fuck down. Any time Miyo wore a new kimono. The exchange of the hair cord and the comb. Miyo finally getting to protect Kiyouko.

Complaints: The first arc was stronger than the second. The abrupt turnaround by the Usuba family was a little strained.

Jujutsu Kaisen

The art change has made JJK more beautiful than ever. The production values and the OP/EDs of this show don't miss. The Hidden Inventory arc was so intense and featured some stunning fights. While I think the last few eps have been a bit rocky, I'm looking forward to seeing what's going to be cooked up.

Highlights: Pulling on our heartstrings with the girl's sudden death. Gojo's revenge rampage. Geto tormented by the clapping of hands. Yuuji's friends teasing him about a girl.

Complaints: JJK's commitment to never slowing down means we never get to spend as much time in the character moments as I'd like. I think this hurts arcs like Hidden Inventory where Geto's turn to the dark side would be better done if they slowed down a bit.

Undead Murder Farce

This season's big surprise for me. This show was incredibly entertaining and had everything you could want. Vampires! Werewolves! A phantom thief! Sherlock Holmes! Lesbians! The supernatural creatures in an alternate history late 1800s Europe thing did a little bit to fill the Vanitas-shaped hole in my heart. I really appreciated how solid production values and creative visuals spiced up episodes that were really mostly just talking. There had better be another season of this. The story's just getting started!

Highlights: Phantom Thief Lupin and his dramatics. Literary characters showing up one after the other. Vampire murder mystery.

Complaints: The second arc was definitely the best one, and the following werewolf arc dragged a bit and couldn't quite compare.

Saint Cecilia and Paster Lawrence

This show just doesn't work as a romcom, which it ostensibly is trying to be. Lawrence is just too dense and the development is excruciatingly slow even by anime romcom standards. Thankfully, this show does work nicely as a charming slice of life. It's consistently cozy and heartwarming even if nothing ever actually happens. The village full of supportive townsfolk looking after these two reminds me almost of Stardew Valley.

Highlights: The trip to the city where we actually inched along the plot a bit. Cecilia's outfits -- she really does look cute in anything. The scene with Cecilia and Lawrence in the attic.

Complaints: Nothing ever happens. Ending on Lawrence confused about whether or not he thinks of Cecilia as family was kind of a downer.

Sunshine in the Mirror

I haven't watched Love Live! Sunshine (which this show is a spinoff of) but I did watch Superstar and it's not like it's difficult to follow a Love Live show. This one started out promising with a cute enough premise, but kind of fell apart halfway through. The cute slice of life content wasn't bad, but the plot itself was poorly done with unclear stakes. The magic badness engulfing the town was primarily shown as fog with a few angry deer in it. That's just New Hampshire, I'm not scared of that.

Highlights: While all idol music sounds a little samey to me, this one was on the higher end of enjoyability. Cute outfits and consistently colorful and fun to look at. Lailaps plot was cute enough.

Complaints: The overarching plot was really badly written, and that killed a lot of the momentum of the series.

Bang Dream! It's MyGo!

This show has one thing going for it compared to Love Live, and that is willingness to show actual teenage drama and teens being petty and selfish. I loved the lead singer character and her awkwardness and her bandaid collection and wished the show were more about her, but I guess not all shows can be Bocchi the Rock. While the writing had its good points, I ended up dropping this due to pointless drama overload and the fact that I couldn't tell the girls apart.

Highlights: Lead singer character was endearing when she got to be on screen.

Complaints: CGI animation was stiff and poor. Characters impossible to tell apart. Teen drama maybe a little too realistic and hard to watch as a result.

Zom 100

This had an outstanding first episode but quickly went down the tubes for me. I'm not a big fan of zombies in the first place, so bouncing off the show is probably on me. I dropped it after the first handful of episodes.

Highlights: First episode is well worth watching on its own. Colorful animation.

Complaints: Unfunny humor. Production quality drops significantly after the first episode. Treatment of female characters made me uncomfortable. Guilt over watching an anime about exploitative companies knowing how many production delays this has had and that the people making this are also being exploited.

Fall 2023

Fall 2023 is looking absolutely slammed! Dr. Stone and Spy x Family are back. Frieren, Apothecary Diaries, I'm in Love with the Villainess and Tearmoon Empire are high on my list of shows to try. And we'll have the second cour of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Personality: People’s first impression is that I am either very mysterious or very sophisticated. With my natural paranoia of people, it takes a long time for me to get comfortable with someone. I usually have a dark sense of humor or completely dry and sarcastic despite most people not picking up. I often end up being a comfort to a lot of people, being a shoulder to lean on; many people say that I am the type of person they can talk to and just open up to me. I always am the type to be bold and be super blunt, I say things how I want and when I want. I often go ahead and stay stuff that most people are afraid to say because I know nobody else will if I don’t say anything. I am what people have described as chaotically good, I work towards a general good but I am not always a nice person.

Hobbies: I love writing, so much so I am an author. I love creative writing though specifically because I create worlds. Cooking and baking is what I usually do in my free time, trying to give people my cooking is the best thing. I love playing video games, especially RPGs and a lot of complicated stuff. I enjoy playing D&D campaigns, especially other table top rpgs. I sometimes do art but not all of the time. I love reading, especially good horror books.

Likes: I like weird and experimental stuff and music and anything in general. I absolutely love horror, though I am a lot more into complicated horror than anything else. I love fantasy and Sci-fi, both genres are just absolutely a delight to have. I love complex stories and characters, something that I could talk on and on about for hours. I love animals, because I used to grow up on a farm with chickens, turkeys, and horses, but even just cats and dogs I love and take care for. Speaking of that, nature, I absolutely love nature, I love camping, hiking, enjoying to the sights, to the point where I camped in negative degree weather (whoops). People who are willing to go along with this.

Dislikes: People who think they are better than shitty entertainment and or are critical to anything that isn’t top tier. As much as I love good media, I always held the belief that the worst thing a piece of media can be is boring. So someone judging another person for liking bad things that are still entertaining have no sense of fun in my opinion. Like you aren’t better for not liking romcoms, you are just a dick. People who like playing games with communication or something is just a one way ticket for getting me mad. People who can’t understand why people don’t change overnight, or that people can’t just simply fix another person’s problems, they can help sure but not fix. Bad textured foods make me vomit.

Love languages: I love giving acts of service and quality time. Most of the stuff I do is provide a listening ear no matter what, which leads to people becoming comfortable in my presence. I often love cooking with people to make stuff with each other. I love receiving words of affirmation and quality time, because both just absolutely melt my heart.

Harvey is possibly the most down-to-earth guy you could ask for, and he’d be an easy friend and lover for you.

confessions behind the school building

were you nervous about finally confessing your feelings to akaashi on valentine’s day of all days? absolutely

he was one of, if not the prettiest, impressively athletic, and overwhelmingly intelligent boys in your class

he probably got at least ten confessions on the daily

and valentine’s day simply doubled the number

and here you were, with your tiny valentine’s day card and box of chocolates in hand

you had heard from all the girls that he had been turning down confessions left and right, only adding onto your mountain of nerves

little did you know that he was waiting for you

cherry blossoms bloomed above your heads, falling gracefully like something right out of a shoujo anime. you tapped the tip of your shoe against the pavement, a nervous tick you had garnered that helped keep you grounded. this was it. this was the moment today was leading up to. you and akaashi were standing behind fukurodani, stealing away a bit of privacy. you didn’t need the prying eyes of the other girls watching as you confessed to your year long crush.

akaashi waited with a patient gaze, unmoving from his spot a few feet ahead of you. he gave you space, and didn’t force you to talk right away. it was as if he already knew the intricacies of your thoughts, the way your mind spiraled if you were suddenly put on the spot, especially when it was as intimate and open as confessing your feelings.

“i wanted to tell you, i mean- what i’ve been trying to tell you for years is that i, well,” your tongue felt like it was two sizes too big. your fingers fidgeted behind your back, holding onto the tiny note and chocolates you had made for him yourself. “i like you a lot more than i really let on. you’re always so thoughtful and considerate. you listen to me when i ramble, and you help me with homework or even small things i don’t completely understand. that’s um, that’s really nice of you. i know you’ve probably received a lot of gifts today, but if you could spare a bit of your backpack space to accept mine, it would mean the world to me.” you bowed towards him, eyes glued to the floor as you held out the small box of chocolates and the note you had written.

you didn’t catch the way a smile tugged at his usually stoic features, or the way he tilted his head in thought while wondering how much courage you mustered up to confess like this. still, you felt nimble fingers brushing against yours, the weight of your gift leaving your grip.

“thank you, y/n,” akaashi told you gratefully as you stood up to your full height, “i’m glad that you feel the same as i do.”

“... wait what.”

kenma rarely has plans for valentine’s day tbh

he treats it like any other day because it’s just a day to play some animal crossing and farm more on stardew valley

however, when you waltz into his life, he panics a little bit as the date draws closer

he wants to make you feel special on valentine’s day

he settled for those tiny heart shaped candies, knowing that you had quite the sweet tooth

he wasn’t gonna leave you hanging on valentine’s day, sweetheart

kenma held your hand in his as the two of you walked home together. the day was rainy, small droplets of water pattering against the shared umbrella the two of you were situated beneath. you were talking about school, something or other about the clubs you were in and how passionate you were about starting your very own this year. kenma listened tentatively, an easy smile on his face as he watched your eyes light up and your free hand gesture and fly about as you spoke.

you were adorable.

the two of you soon arrived at your house, and you promised kenma that you would call him tonight so the two of you could play games or watch some netflix together over the internet. you two had been particularly invested in some k-drama that always left the two of you at the edge of your seats. you planted a gentle kiss to his cheek, his face erupting in crimson right to the tips of his ears. giggling quietly, you wished him goodbye, your hand beginning to slide from his as you went to leave. to your surprise, he held on tighter.

with his gaze cast down, you watched as he pulled out a tiny bag of heart shaped candies from his pocket. “i know it’s not much, but i saw everyone else getting their partners gifts and kuroo said that it would be good if i got you something too.”

you accepted his small token of affection with shaky hands and flushed cheeks. peering inside the clear bag, you saw a whole collection of multi-coloured candies reading cheesy phrases such as ‘b mine’, ‘true love’ or even a ‘cutiepie.’

“kenma, i love it. oh my.. haha! i thought you forgot since you didn’t mention anything about gifts for today.” kenma’s hand squeezed yours, his eyes lifting from the wet ground to meet your own with a small yet confident smile.

“i wouldn’t forget something as important as you.”

big teddy bears

an absolutely chaotic mess on valentine’s day

he’s so excited that he finally has someone to spoil, so he wants to go all out

he figured that the best present to get you was the biggest teddy bear he could find

he went to 6 stores and dragged asahi and tanaka with him

he saw a teddy bear that was literally twice his size and went “I’LL TAKE IT”

mans has no chill, he spent literally his entire allowance on it

his grandpa didn’t even bat an eye PFFT

when nishinoya showed up at your doorstep with a chunky teddy bear in tow, you had no words. truly. it had been at the stroke of midnight when he texted you to come outside and see the valentine’s gift he had gotten you. you had said that this could wait until morning, but he insisted that this could not wait another moment. it was technically valentine’s day, after all! this resulted in you dragging yourself down the stairs of your home to greet him at the door. to your surprise, yet at the same time not surprising you in the slightest, was noya carrying the largest teddy bear you had ever laid your eyes on. not only that, but tanaka and what appeared to be a very exhausted asahi accompanied him.

“y/n-chan!” nishinoya shouted boldly and triumphantly, getting down on one knee which instantly made you panic. he wasn’t going to propose, was he? no he wouldn’t. would he? oh god. your words got caught in your throat, trying to formulate some kind of response to his sudden and incoming declaration. yet, a proposal never came. he held up the teddy bear as if it were simba from the lion king, the entire stuffed animal basically shielding his shorter form from your view. you suppressed a snort with your hand.

“i searched far and wide for this gigantic teddy bear for you, please accept it this valentine’s day!” nishinoya said loud and clear from behind the bear. you were having trouble stifling your laughter because from your angle, it looked like the bear itself was saying these words to you. you attempted to take the huge bear from his arms but it ended up being a lot heavier than you anticipated.

“noya, really this is-”

“take the picture!” noya whisper shouted to tanaka, who was holding up his phone camera with a thumbs up. noya posed beside you with an arm tossed around your waist, throwing up a peace sign and sticking out his tongue. leave it to yuu nishinoya to spoil you with the biggest bear he could find. it was incredibly endearing, especially when you found out from asahi that he nearly got kicked out from a walmart after knocking down the entire teddy bear display. he could be the biggest dork sometimes. but you wouldn’t trade him for the world.

he saw the idea on pinterest and he had to try it out with you

they were cupcakes red velvet with pink, buttercream frosting

easy, right? it would be a cute little date, you could even stay over at his house while you watched a romcom or something of the sort while they were baking

turns out it wasn’t easy

at all

“shit fuck, oh god- shit!” koushi mumbled to himself as he was spilling some of the red cupcake mix over the side of the bowl. you were trying your best not to laugh too much but you couldn’t help your giggles when koushi shot you a playfully annoyed glare, his nose powered with sugar and flourmaking him look straight out of a victorian magazine. baking with koushi had gone just as well as you thought it would. there was a lot of flour being thrown around, a few stray chocolate chips and sprinkles now on the floor serving as reminders of past quarrels. koushi had always been a rather chaotic individual behind his “soft boy” demeanour he liked to flaunt. he could be so goofy and fun. he could be your greatest hype man but also the person you knew could be in your corner when it counted. and here the two of you were, making a mess in your shared kitchen at nine at night for a valentine’s day date.

“honey, you’re mixing it too fast!”

“i’m mixing it just fine, see look! it’s supposed to be this thick,” his ahoge bobbed back and forth atop his head as he mixed with quite literally his entire torso. his tongue poked out of the corner of his mouth as he focused hardcore on the making sure the mixture was abolished of any and all chunkiness present. you rolled your eyes, a wide smile on your face despite his stubbornness. “the oven’s been preheating for thirty minutes now.”

“well the oven can wait,” he huffed, tapping the neck of the whisk against the bowl to remove the excess mix before grabbing a ladle to begin scooping all the mix into the muffin tin. not without another mess, of course.

“kou, stop moving the—”

“i’m not moving anything, you’re just making me laugh!”

“hand me the spoon, hand it over.”

“it’s not a spoon!”

“it’s a big ass spoon.”

“y/n!”

you were bickering like an old married couple as your hands reached greedily for the ladle that already had some cupcake mix in it. koushi held it out of your reach, causing him to back up into the counter while you hopped in an attempt to get it back. in your desperate attempts, you slipped on the flour from your little past war and caused the two of you to collapse to the floor in a heap of giggles and laughter.

yeah, you two would definitely never be touching any sort of recipe after that day, you absolute menaces.

Ahhhh an ask!!

Ok I’m gonna try and keep this as canon as possible. Disclaimer: I am in no way qualified to give this information but here you go. These are just based on what I’ve watched and what I like. Different people like different stuff. (Also thanks to @artemis-sapphic for giving me some of the ships!!)

TV Shows

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - if you are on tumblr you’ve probably heard of this one but cartoon where the two main characters go through an enemies to lovers storyline

Haunting of Bly Manor - another popular tumblr show but the main character is wlw and has a love interest in the show. It’s a horror show but there isn’t a real coming out scene, which I love because it’s more so just about being together than coming out

Wynonna Earp- I absolutely adore this show and the wlw ship. The relationship is gonna be endgame and between two main female characters. Both characters also have storylines outside being gay (that’s true for most shows on this list), which I love.

The Owl House - this is like somewhat canon. Cartoon where there is a main character who is a wlw but the couple does not officially get together in the end of the first season

Legends of Tomorrow - Many of the characters in the show give off a gay vibe but there is a main wlw relationship between two main characters. It’s a superhero show about time travel.

Supergirl - There is one canon wlw ship between two side characters and then there is a non-canon ship between the main character and someone else. Outside of wlw rep, there is also trans representation with another character in the show.

Atypical - While it takes a season or two to get to the real gay part of this show, enemies to lover trope once again. The wlw part of this show focuses on finding yourself and high school relationships.

Black Lightning - Main wlw ship. Once again a superhero show. I love the characters on this show, and who doesn’t like gay superheroes.

Movies

Happiest Season - Honestly it’s not a great movie but it is the closest I’m gonna get to a lesbian romcom anytime soon. It was a cute Christmas romcom. If you liked this movie, you might also want to check out Lez Bomb. It’s the same premise but set around Thanksgiving.

The Prom - I’m hesitant to put this on the list because I feel like so much focus was put on the other storylines, but this is a movie musical based on a Broadway show. The gay part is set around coming out and being gay in a rural community in high school

Rent - This is not like one of the best examples of queer representation, but the musical holds a special place in my heart. Musical set in the midst of the AIDS epidemic in NYC and has a wlw couple.

The Half of It - This is not a wlw relationship but the main character is a young high school lesbian. I really liked the storyline, and I related to a lot of the content in it.

I’m not a huge fan of the period dramas with wlw personally but if you’d like to watch those I’m sure there is a list somewhere with them on them!

Other

Stardew Valley - This is a video game where you can play as a farmer, but all of the dateable characters in the game are canonically bi. As such, you can date anyone regardless of your character’s gender. (Also highly recommend playing with your s/o it’s very cute)

Heartstopper - This is a graphic novel by Alice Oseman. The lead couple is mlm, but the way it’s written is so relatable to like any teenage gay person (at least in my opinion). Also a side couple is wlw

Yu Yu Hakusho (fantastic dub, funny, moving, great character development, this show has it all)

D.Gray-man (serious but fun, gets heavier in later episodes)

Princess Tutu (weird but amazing, especially if you like fairy tales)

Fairy Tail (I haven't finished it, but I love it, wonderful characters)

Wolf Children (touching, I cried several times)

LAYER ONE: THE OUTSIDE - Name: shizu ! - Eye Color: brown . - Hair Style/color: ... brown . asian aesthetics(tm) . im lazy so i just part it down the middle & that’s it . im lucky to have straight hair , so it’s p easy to maintain ! - Height: 5'6” . - Clothing style: like a 70 y/o grandma . i have a whole cardigan collection lool . i also like to wear blacks & grays with the occasional denim . im very boring . - Best physical feature: i think it’s my hands & nails , but ppl usually talk abt me hair .

LAYER TWO: THE INSIDE - Your fears: failure , suffocation , death , aging , people , being an Adult . okay there calm down me . - Your guilty pleasure: buying stationery omg . i can’t tell u how many pens i have ... - Ambitions for the future: to graduate is pretty high up there , but . after the last few years , i just want to be happy .

LAYER THREE: THOUGHTS - Your first thoughts waking up: ughhhhh . just let me sleep more . - What you think about before bed: abt how i wasted another day / all the responsibilities i ignored lool ??? but i also think a lot abt my muses . i lovE THEM OKAY .

LAYER FIVE: DO YOU. - Lie: i have , usually there’s a reason for it . - Believe in yourself: aggressively sighs . one day . - Believe in love: yes ?? - Want someone: ehh , yes , but im also content with my family .

LAYER SIX: EVER? - Been on stage: for someone as shy as i am , i’ve actually been on stage too many times lool. young me can’t say no fjsdkfj . - Done drugs: sugar . - Changed who you were to fit in: yes & no . esp. when i was a kid , i would change everything abt me . im still like that now , but it’s more behavioral . im quite stubborn when it comes to things like clothing .

LAYER SEVEN: FAVORITES - Favorite color: pastels , navy blue , royal purple . - Favorite animal: big doggos !! lool do dinos count ?? - Favorite movie: i watch so many i can’t possibly choose one . i have a soft spot for romances + romcoms . but also disney / pixar . - Favorite game: im not a huge gamer , but stardew valley & osu is up there .

LAYER EIGHT: AGE - Day your next birthday will be: sunday . - How old will you be: 21 jsldkfj where has the time gone . - Does age matter: yes & no . i don’t think age is synonymous with wisdom / experience . there’s a correlation btwn the two , but correlation =/= causation . as for whether age matters in a romantic sense , my answer is also yes & no . so many ppl can articulate it better than i lool you’re better off reading their answers !
