In which I get very feral about Angua von Uberwald, as I sometimes do
(Below is a quote from The Fifth Elephant, it contains some spoilers...)
""Carrot! I've got to know something."
"Yes?"
"That might happen to me. Have you ever thought about that? He was my brother, after all. Being two things at the same time, and never quite being one... we're not the most stable of creatures."
"Gold and muck come out of the same shaft," said Carrot.
"That's just a dwarf saying!"
"It"s true, though. You're not him."
"Well, if it happened... if it did... would you do what Vimes did? Carrot? Would it be you who picked up a weapon and came after me? I know you won't lie. I've got to know. Would it be you?"
A little snow slid down from the trees. The wolves watched. Carrot looked up for a moment at the grey sky and then nodded.
"Yes."
She sighed. "Promise?" she said." * * * * * * * * * * *
PRATCHETT HOW ABSOLUTELY DARE YOU.
How am I supposed to be normal about Angua, the most all-round competent pretty much of all the Watch (and definitely the most alarming fighter), cynical and self-aware and judgemental and brilliant and passionately loyal and very compassionate at times, saying that to her boyfriend. An intensely idealistic and kind and simple and terrifyingly (no, truly terrifyingly) good man. It's implied that their relationship has an inevitable slight d/s-y element, because anything halfway between a human and a wolf is rather a dog, and she is absolutely aware that when he calls, she will come running. Even while she is continually the only person (other than Vimes) who gets seriously snarky about him and isn't easily influenced by his extreme levels of charisma.
And her sheer damn relief in this scene. They've just buried her other love interest, who died trying to save Carrot from Angua's horrifying brother Wolfgang. And Carrot's the only person she trusts this much. This is just the absolute classic monster x human relationship, there is so much going on with them over the course of the several books in which they both appear (though this is the one in which they are both the most in focus) and I am still waiting for any adaptation to do it full justice.
I do not usually get this intense about any m/f relationship, but FUCK.
I also note: we learn in The Fifth Elephant that Angua has another brother who is unable to change shape to looking like a human, and who got out of the family (and away from Wolfgang) too, to work as a sheepdog in Borogravia, where he wins prizes at agricultural shows. Carrot is clearly deeply proud of potentially having a prize-winning sheepdog brother-in-law. Angua finds this extremely irritating. :D
But Vimes and Angua are based in Borogravia in Monstrous Regiment, only a few books later, so I am working on the assumption that Angua visited Andreyi while she was there. :) :) :) I hope they had a good time together. I also wonder whether his human shepherd boss has any idea of his species. :D (I bet Granny Aching would have worked it out, but Granny Aching doesn't live in Borogravia. ;-) )

Discworld Fight Club 2023 Masterpost
Welcome to the biggest rumble the Disc has ever seen! Thrill as some of the turtle's premier brawlers, assassins, vampires, magic users, and tricksters face off in a five-round tournament to see who's the best of the best!
But first, please read the Rules:
Remember to vote based on who you think would win in a fight, not necessarily who is your favorite character. This is a tournament, not a popularity contest!
These fighters are good guys and shouldn't really bear any real animus toward each other, so consider this a more or less friendly event where no one is literally trying to murder anyone. So, when considering what weapons and techniques a character might use, think more in terms of how they'd incapacitate one another. That might involve using weaponry of course, but like, maybe Detritus shouldn't have access to the Piecemaker, is the kind of thing I mean, ha.
A contestant can win by knocking their opponent out, making them 'say uncle' so to speak, or even tricking them somehow! Think about the characters' strengths beyond, well, physical strength!
Successfully running away counts as a victory for the runner, not as a default win for the contestant left behind.
Reblogging and replying to the polls, especially with commentary on your reasoning for your vote, would be super fun and I hope a lot of people will do that! I tried to seed the bracket so the matchups are interesting, and I think there's some room for debate on a lot of them even at the start. Have fun!
So without further ado, let's have Discworld Fight Club 2023!
This will be updated as the rounds progress, with links to each poll. Winners on each match are in bold.

I definitely encourage everybody to go into the match links above and check out the notes if they haven't been doing so all along.

Discworld x Baldur’s Gate 3 crossover because Discworld crossovers are literally the best thing ever
Can you just imagine Gale and Ponder in the same room. Gale and Ridcully in the same room? Gale and Granny in the same room? Gale and NANNY in the same room??
Wyll trying to out hero Carrot and just failing absolutely miserably. Karlach and Carrot getting on like a house on fire. Astarion and Otto meeting each other and Astarion just being the Worst influence on him. Shadowheart, Adora and Angua being immediate best friends
I could go on and on but also Sam Vimes trying to deal with literally any of the origin characters would be the best

for the "never have I ever" asks!
Have you ever written fantasy au's or fantasy fanfic?
(I mean I guess I could just stalk your ao3 hahaha but thought I would ask anyway! 😂)
Fun question! Thanks for the ask @thesymphonytrue
For fantasy AUs:
I'm currently writing a White Collar story set in a Snow White setting.
I also wrote a White Collar x Good Omens crossover in which Neal is a demon: What Fools These Mortals Be. ~2500 words
For fantasy fanfic, I've written a handful of stories in the Discworld, the Good Omens, The Good Place fandoms. A few highlights:
Dragon's Egg Blue: ~11K words in the Discworld fandom. Carrot and Angua deal with a baby dragon when Lady Sybil is away.
The Book Place: ~1000 words, The Good Place x Good Omens crossover in which Chidi asks to meet an angel.
And honorable mention to Universal Truths of Time Travel, a ~1800 word Doctor Who x Pride & Prejudice crossover. It's time travel gone wrong, where the Doctor wanted to visit Jane Austen but instead ended up in a universe that consists of every variation ever written or imagined of P&P, so it's less science and more fantastical.

Discworld Crossovers I’d pay good money to see:
Discworld x The Tenth Kingdom, just for the Angua and Wolf interactions alone it would be amazing. Also Prince meeting Gaspode sounds hilarious.
Discworld x Galavant, the show and the books have a similar style of humor so I think they’d fit well together, and if they ever made a Night Watch movie, I’d cast the guy who played Sid to play Reg Shoe because of that revolution song he sings in the show.
Discworld x Something Rotten, the Bottom brothers trying to put on a musical at the Ankh-Morpork Opera house would be such a disaster I haven’t seen the musical, but I’ve listened to the soundtrack and that’s just how I think it would go.
Discworld x Good Omens, personally I like to headcanon that the demon the Lancre Coven talked to was Crowley, because that would be hilarious.
Discworld x Steven Universe, because I’d love to see the Trolls and Gems interact with each other. Also the A.M.C.W meeting Steven would be so cute! I feel like him and Carrot would hit it off, but if he tried doing that thing where he tries to be everyone’s therapist despite being a kid, Vimes would shoot that down immediately and probably have some words with the Crystal Gems. Also Steven and Connie geeking out over all the fantasy stuff in Discworld would be fun since they both love fantasy books. Additionally, Connie would make an exceptional witch.
Discworld x The Owl House, I already made a whole post about this, but I’d still love to see it. Nobby Nobbs and Hooty interacting would be the most entertaining yet cursed thing ever.

I cant get into alot of ships and its because like the most important thing for me when it comes to stuff like this is shits gotta be MUTUAL. Like there needs to be give and take, Im not here for fucking fictional unhealthy relationships where one party is expected to fix or heal the other. And when I say mutual I mean they need to both have the same feelings for each other like Im not here for “Party A sees Party B as someone they need to fix and Party B sees Party A as The One Who Is Fixing Them” LIKE NO, THEY ARE ON EQUAL FOOTING, YOUR PARTNER SHOULDNT PLAY THERAPIST TO YOU

I don’t have a specific quote for this one since Sir Terry doesn’t really write relationship scenes, but I headcanon Caylan Hughes as Captain Carrot and I ship Carrot x Angua so this is basically a perfect image. The dog could look a bit more werewolf-y but I’m not complaining. See the previous post for an image from the same shoot with a quote from Carrot and Angua’s first time together in Men At Arms.
Image Credit: Caylan Hughes by Wander Aguiar for Satellite Magazine Image Description: An extremely well-muscled redheaded man lies on some kind of wooden chest-table. He is wearing nothing but a pair of gray socks. Unfortunately, he does have a piece of white fabric draped over his crotch. He is half sitting up to cuddle a white pitbull-like dog sitting next to him. One arm is petting the dog’s back, one hand is cradling its ear and he and the dog are giving each other kisses.

Fics you'll never write: Darcy/Carrot/Angua "Take Me to Your Leader"
Okay, I did have to think about this one for a bit.
Carrot has taken Angua to a special exhibition being held at Unseen University. While they’re there, something goes wrong with Roundworld and somehow, they get sucked into a magic tunnel, landing in the middle of New Mexico.
It’s been several months since Thor left and never came back, and Jane and Darcy have been working almost non-stop trying to build an Einstein-Rosen Bridge. They’re doing a test run on the equipment when IT WORKS!!!! Except instead of opening a stable wormhole, a tunnel appears in front of them, whirls around a bit, spits out sparks in a strange, greenish purple colour, and then drops two very strangely armoured people at their feet.
It doesn’t take long to establish that they are NOT Asgardian, but Something Else entirely.
Coulson gets called in. It doesn’t take long for him to realise that Carrot reminds him of Thor, and strangely, Angua reminds him of Natasha. He has a lot of headaches.
Jane and Darcy start working on opening some sort of communication with the Wizards. When they’re not trying to reverse the experiment, Darcy helps Angua find a good shampoo, and Carrot a good metal polish for his armour. She introduces them to CSI. They both agree that Mr Vimes would hate it.
Carrot finds 17 museums within a 20km radius that no one knew existed. He takes Angua to every single one, and after they give Coulson’s agents the slip for the third time, Darcy starts tagging along as well. It turns that she knew about 11 them, and visited them all doing research for her degree - there’s a lot of political history here! She and Carrot bond over museums, she and Angua bond over hair care, manicures, and the way Carrot manages to answer all of Coulson’s questions with a lecture on some obscure anecdote about something I don’t need to figure it out because I won’t actually be writing this!
They eventually get home, but the phrase ‘it’s a million to one chance but it just might work ‘ will be used at least once. It may or may not work.

Could you do a Discworld blorbo ask game set?
I still have a long way to go before finishing the series so all of these opinions can change at anytime as I make my way through all of these amazing books. So, I will answer it as I feel right now having read 15 books in the series.
blorbo: Death and Granny Weatherwax (I still can't pick one. I love them both equally)
scrunkly: Carrot. He is really sweet, what can I say? Also, Angua. My babies.
scrimblo bimblo: Mustrum Ridcully. At least I don't see much love for him, but oh man do I love him! He is really ridiculous. I also really like Twoflower even though he was just in the first two books (that I know of)
glup shitto: Nobby Nobbs. Ok, so he is not that obscure when it comes to the city watch books, but I was extremely happy about his brief appearances in "Hogfather" and "Maskerade". Happier than I ever thought I would be because it's fuckin' Nobby! Still... I also really like the Librarian. I don't think any of these are that obscure though ahah Does Mister Teatime count? Oh, ALBERT!
poor little meow meow: Mister Teatime!!! He is so over the top and I love him ahahah I also love Vetinari but he doesn't quite fit this category and he is extremely popular.
horse plinko: Rincewind (I'm sorry)
eeby deeby: I've got nothing :x No discworld character has annoyed me yet. Or at least not one that was memorable.
Thank you so much for the ask :D I am upset that I couldn't mention it since it doesn't fit any of these really but I love Susan too.

Discworld?
My favorite parent-child relationship
Vimes and little Sam obviously. /Obviously/.
My favorite sibling relationship
Hmm... Hmm. there aren't a whole lot of sibling relationships in the ones I’ve read... Oh, I do think a lot about the Ridcully siblings though. I want to know more about them and what led them to the leadership positions they have found themselves in. It’s more curiosity than anything though i suppose
My favorite family relationship (other)
Carrot and his parents! Let’s have more good adoptive parent/child relationships in fiction please!
My favorite friendship between two people
Cheri and Angua! I love how supportive Angua is when Cheery starts expressing herself, it’s the best!
My favorite friendship between a group
okay obviously my first thought was the Watch, but actually I think it’s the printing press group in The Truth. That book is basically the Found Family trope in one stand-alone novel. They meet, become friends, and support each other through dealing with trauma. Text-book Found Family right there. I love it.
My favorite mentorship
How weird would it be to say Sam Vimes and himself? lol Night Watch is on a whole ‘nother level huh
also Vimes and Carrot though, because Sam didn’t ask to be anyone’s mentor in Guards! Guards! but ended up doing it anyway, and the relationship affected the both of them for the better.
My favorite rivalry
Moist Von Lipwig and the Press. Also Vimes and the Press. I love how William DeWorde manages to get on everyone’s nerves all the time, especially because in his book he is just a guy who wants to be honest. in The Truth he comes across as a quiet and good natured person which is funny because Sam sees him as a troublemaker and Moist sees him as a super boring stick-in-the-mud. It’s truly incredible
My favorite hatred/antipathy
So the interesting thing about hate and antipathy in Discworld is that it definitely does exist, but usually by the end of the book it’s been dissected in some way, either by the main character learning to understand and overcome it, or by the villain who expresses those qualities being defeated.
I think my favorite example of that is in Night Watch, but it isn’t Vimes and Carcer. It’s Vimes and Swing. Like, in terms of Sam having to deal with the exact antithesis of everything he’s worked so hard to build up in the modern Watch... the scene where they’re clearing out cable street... Perfect. Amazing. Compelling and meaningful storytelling, who could ask for better than that
also just in terms of antagonist relationships I find interesting, I am forever intrigued by Pin and Tulip. They only showed up in one book and yet they live in my head rent-free
My favorite potential relationship between characters who never talk in canon
okay I know Vimes and Lipwig meet in Raising Steam but I haven’t read that one yet, so I’m counting it. I have a feeling it will be a lot of fun to read. I love nothing more than when complete polar opposites end up on the same side x)

💏 Who is your OTP?
Thank you for asking! To the surprise of no one, my OTP of OTPs is Alistair x Cousland. I know Cousland is always an OC so there’s a lot left ot interpretation, but I love everything about them. They’re a battle couple, they support each other, and at least in my worldstate, they become an almost unmatched political powerhouse once they’re married. I also love the AU potential for them, because there are so many ways they might have met outside of the canon events of the game - the Couslands could have visited Arl Eamon when they were children, Alistair might have been acknowledged from the beginning and grown up in the royal court, he might have become a guard instead of a templar and met her at the Landsmeet, the possibilities are endless.
Honourable mentions: Zuko x Katara from Avatar, and Carrot x Angua from Discworld (which has so many similiarities to my version of Alistair x Cousland it’s scary)

A, give me your top five OTPs.
From the fandom meme: come at me friend prompt list.
Top five OTPs right now, in no particular order...
Doctor x Rose (Doctor Who), Kuroo x Kei (Black Jack), Komi x Tadano (Komi-san Can’t Communicate), Carrot x Angua (Discworld), Roger x Dorothy (The Big O).
There are more, but... I don’t want discourse or to deal with fandom memories.
