i love stargate so much but it is absolutely a show whos lore is a roland emmerich movie script, a children's guide to egyptian history, and whatever the writers thought was interesting on any given week duct taped together and expected to bear the load for the entire franchise
its very stupid but this is why i love it so much. because it takes the thought experiment of "what if the ancient aliens guy was actually right" and just goes fuckin hog wild with it
please watch stargate its so good. watch the movie and then watch sg1 its so so so good

Thinking about the Namor discourse, I'm reminded of the Killmonger discourse from back when the first movie came out. Almost everyone agreed that he was right, but that his methods were extreme, and that Nakia had already suggested the same things without the violence. Killmonger's stance was... surprisingly just like Namor's. Basically burn the world, take it over (although Namor seems to have little differentiation between poor, oppressed people of the surface and the oppressors of the surface. At least that's how it seems.)
But there was also this huge rise in fans of Killmonger. He's a cool, confident character, played by a handsome actor, who was fun and cool to watch. He was definitely killed off too soon, though. Marvel had that problem of killing their villains back then, when comics heroes usually encounter their villains many times.
Now the main difference between Killmonger and Namor is that Namor isn't a villain. Killmonger comes from a straight forward villain character in the comics. Namor is an antihero in the comics. He has a long-standing feud with T'Challa and Wakanda, and they clash often for reasons similar to this movie. But Namor isn't supposed to be hated as a villain. He's coming from a completely unique perspective than everyone on the surface. Comparing Tenoch Huerta's Namor to the Namor in the comics, they're very similar in that their main goal is the safety and protection of their underwater society. Sometimes, that aligns Namor with the surface heroes. Often, he clashes with them, either because of his own extreme views (burn the world) or because they're getting up to something that puts Atlantis in harm's way (Talokan in the MCU).
So, when I'm seeing a lot of like... takedowns of people who like Namor, and who are attracted to Tenoch, and comments like "Anything for a sexy face" and "y'all wouldn't do this for a Black man" it feels very much... to me... like unfamiliarity with the character. Namor is a superhero, not a villain. We're not supposed to see him like Loki or Thanos. That's why they've been billing him as "the first Mexican SUPERHERO" in the press tour. He is an antagonist for Wakanda a lot of the time, but that's because Marvel comics are actually quite good at nuances. A lot of characters aren't strict hero/villain archetypes in Marvel comics. Look at Magneto and Professor X, as an example. You're gonna tell me Professor X is a moral good superhero and Magneto is a moral bad supervillain? Especially in the current comics where all Mutants live in Krakoa together and have a society protected from the rest of the world. You're gonna tell me Iron Man is a strictly good superhero? Like, nuance is how the comics work. That's what Coogler is actually really good at bringing to his MCU projects and it's why he's the perfect director to even handle a character like Namor.
Coogler knows how to bring the nuance. It's why everyone loved Killmonger, too, even if we didn't agree with him. (Though some of y'all did.) Nuance shows us why Killmonger wants to do what he's doing.
As far as "wouldn't do this for a Black man" takes... isn't that disingenuous when talking to fans of the Black Panther franchise? It's not like the franchise was small or didn't do well. It was one of the most successful movies of the Infinity Saga, up there with Infinity War and Endgame. Most people in these tags HAVE gone up for a Black man. T'Challa was not lacking in love. Neither was Killmonger. Or even M'Baku. How many oneshots I read about M'Baku taking care of his "vegetarian children" because of that one off, throwaway line "Just kidding. We are vegetarians." (Loved the callback to it in this movie with him eating a carrot while talking to the council!) People liking Tenoch Huerta and thinking his version of Namor is attractive has nothing to do with whether or not people find the Black men attractive. But for what it's worth, THERE'S ONLY ONE MAIN BLACK MAN IN THIS MOVIE and that's M'Baku. Unless you expect a bunch of teen and 20-something fans to go up over the elders on the council. T'Challa has passed, W'Kabi is in jail and never shown, Killmonger does show up for a cameo but that's not a main role. All we get is M'Baku. And people are going up for him, because people love M'Baku. This is a movie about a whole country of badass Black women. The only male characters of consequence are M'Baku, Namor, and Ross.
Namor is just a shiny new character and again, not a villain AND provides representation to an entirely different group of people. People are allowed to be excited to see an Indigenous character in a Marvel movie. It doesn't mean they don't love the Black characters in the movie.
As far as shipping, there's really only two choices and that's Shuri/Riri and Shuri/Namor. It's surprising that y'all are upset about Shuri/Namor, as that ship was obvious. You can dislike a ship without pretending everyone who likes it made it up based on nothing. Media literacy is understanding what a story is trying to do, and the Namor and Shuri scenes before the attack on Wakanda were trying to make you see them as a potential romance. I saw one take saying that they might possibly be switching Namor's obsession with Sue Storm into an obsession with Shuri (which is ehhhhhh and I kinda hope not, but would work with the storyline they're building).
With Riri, you get an easy ship kinda in the same grain as ScienceBros, and they are really good friends in the comics, so that ship is a pretty surefire one going forward.
I don't really like Shuri and M'Baku, but I could see it happening more than any of them in canon. I only don't like it because he reads very "older brother" with her and it would feel like an extreme left turn for them to date. But I could see the movies trying that pairing on some like... "good for Wakanda" stuff.
(Then there's Namor/M'Baku which is really funny, and I like your minds 🤣 Based on the "fish man" stuff alone.)
Anyway I'm getting off track, but basically, I think there's a lot of extreme behavior going on in the tags and I think it really boils down to this being your first introduction to Namor, because there's no reason to be angry with people for liking him. You're gonna have to get used to him, too, because he's a Problem, tm, and I fully expect him to insert himself into so many conflicts and give the Avengers grief, too. And I hope we get a main universe (I refuse to call the MCU 616) Illuminati with him and Strange and them, too.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for that very informative post about Namor's biracial native roots. After reading more and more I can only say Ryan Coogler is a damn GENIUS. Casting someone as talented as Tenoch, having a mesoamerican background instead of Atlantis, AND using colonialism (if the leaks/spoilers are true) as a parallel to the white men that invaded Atlantis and killed Atlanteans in Namor's earlier comics is such a smart move. I realized that both versions, as far as we know, mirror each other in that aspect. AND it truly sets Namor apart from DCEU's Aquaman, which is interesting since Momoa is not even a white guy either (but there wasn't backlash with him, was there? I don't remember). Man, they truly made such a rich culture with Talokan that I can't even believe the assholes saying they ruined Namor when in fact this adaptation couldn't be more perfect. As a Latin American, and as a new fan of comics!Namor and MCU!Namor, I love and support this.
You're welcome! I'm glad my meta was helpful. I agree, the direction Coogler has gone with is an amazing idea and I'm very excited to see the movie! I'm very glad Coogler is handling Namor because you can't have Namor without his roots, and a lot of that is very political, dealing with outsiders/invasion/the devastation of their homeland and people. Which is why all these people online crying #namormynamor are very annoying because Namor isn't some white guy in a speedo swimming around talking to fish. I really dislike when people erase the fact that Namor has always been a white passing biracial coded character, but I also understand no one does extensive reading into older comics and it's not mentioned throughout later comics so the only time it really annoys me is when people try to argue against it with the limited knowledge they have.
Iirc there were some people going "that's not aquaman!" but it's the same kinda people who argue against Namor now, but for the most part I never saw extreme dislike of Aquamomoa because, let's just be honest, Aquaman was always considered a "lame" character. He was the butt of so many jokes over the decades, so when they made him BADASS suddenly people were more on board with this. The weirdest thing is they literally changed Aquaman to be more like Namor. (I talk more about Aquaman and Namor here)
Aside from the fact Aquaman is DC's copycat of Namor and they took alot of stuff from Namor over the years, then they went and took even more for the movie version, giving him bullet proof skin (like Namor), the whole biracial aspect of Namor being non white, even the imagery is really close to his Savage Sub-Mariner run. Yet people were totally fine with a white character being played by a non white actor because it "made him better and cooler" but they want to hate Namor for being non-white and woke because Namor is dealing with not so pleasant issues when that's his literal origin.
I honestly don't care what other fans think, just a few months ago those people weren't even talking about Namor so alot of this is just people jumping on the hate bandwagon, and while I have my criticism of the mcu as a whole, I also think alot of these people are just hating to hate, they don't care about the character, they are just upset it's not being catered to their white male power fantasy self insert fanon. There is alot of bad fanon that surrounds Namor's character but the actual character is so layered and interesting and complex.
I'm so excited to learn about Talokan, and the inspiration from Mesoamerica it takes, I'm working on a master post for all this information so far but I have to mention that I love that the cast came up with a hand symbol that has meaning with their culture
The ¡Líik’ik Talokan! hand gesture is based on ones seen in many Mesoamerican codices. Here's my comparison between a detail from the Codex Nuttall and #Namor Thanks
I couldn't insert the video here but check out the cast talking about it! Talokan Rises! (¡Líik’ik Talokan! means Talokan Rises!)
Also another detail; The conch shell Namor carries! Here & Here!
I just so happy about everything they have done with Namor and his world and I'm excited that now we have two versions but ultimately I feel the same core of the character/his story is intact.
MCU!Namor & Comic!Namor are perfectly wonderful!

While I'm on the subject, other rides I wish existed and might make a thing in this AU, besides the Treasure Planet dark ride:
A version of the Dumbo ride that's a bunch of Tick-Tocks circling a center figure of a terrified Hook (idk this one just seems very charming to me as a kiddie ride and with how much Peter Pan leans into the comedy aspect of Tick-Tock chasing Hook, who the company is pretty clear will never actually eat him...)
A permanent Nightmare Before Christmas attraction, so fans don't have to just wait for Haunted Mansion Holiday every year. Boogie's the easiest to theme a ride around (just slap a roulette wheel overlay on your standard spinny ride) but I kinda want something more than that. Maybe another dark ride, but this time instead of covering the story of the movie, it follows a small, loose sequel inspired by Oogie's Revenge?
We've had a high-speed Mr. Toad ride, can we get a high-speed Horseman chase ride to complete the set? Maybe even throw in an alternate ending for the chase (darker in tone of course to match Mr. Toad landing in Hell in the ride version of his story) It would be slow and spooky at first, mirroring the prelude to the Horseman chase, then when the Horseman appears, the ride picks up speed and takes tight corners and jarring turns, with false "near-misses" with the Horseman
(I also want to add a Horseman cameo to the Haunted Mansion since he was in one of the unused plans)
Give the Buzz rides some Star Command references, that's all, I don't really need a full ride when we already have a good in-the-spirit one for the original that a few things could just be added to
(Although my brain just conjured up the idea of a Star Command ride that's just a parody of Rise of the Resistance but. I don't think that would actually work. It's just a funny concept to imagine cartoon Zurg taking the place of Kylo Ren)
SOMETHING Clone Wars-themed, for Pete's sake just acknowledge Clone Wars beyond our girl Ahsoka
Ohhhh maybe a "race" coaster that simulates a Clone Wars space dogfight (that's in reference to when two warplanes engage in battle with each other, not the illegal sport of making two actual dogs fight each other btw) and depending on which vehicle you board, you assume the role of one of the main Jedi (and maybe Rex because he's our boy) or one of the main villains and who each side plays and who "wins" could be randomized. With banter from both characters during slower points in the ride (and in the queue) for added effect. Though I'd say give the guests the choice of which side they want to board...although a part of me worries that wouldn't be practical due to uneven amounts of people wanting to be either not matching up with available seating. But this is purely fun speculation, so...my city now.
We're bringing back Extra-Terror-Estrial and we're keeping it scary
Also let's revamp Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour because HK needs something to do besides walk around shuffling away from children's attempts to hug him. I want to revise the story of the attraction and how it fully plays out but I'm not sure exactly how yet. Good still wins though because I'm already suggesting too much spooky shit, gotta sprinkle in some happy endings to appease the mouse overlord
Elephant Graveyard coaster. That's it, that's the whole bullet point. (Shout-out to gavillain for coming up with that one)
I think he also had an idea for a Bald Mountain coaster and that one kicked ass too. Can you fucking imagine a Chernabog animatronic
Laugh Floor but it's House of Mouse. Please. Actually no, just make House of Mouse into an actual restaurant.
Something Atlantis-themed but my brain is not giving me ideas. :(
Please turn Tiana's Palace into a restaurant
Oh yeah and a coaster based on Yzma's lab entrance. With "WRONG LEVER!" reference at the beginning. Because early Tumblr was right about that, that would rock.
Idk what kind of ride would justify this but I just. Want an animatronic of snake Jafar. For reasons.
The existing carousel is iconic so don't change it but can we get another one somewhere else that's all Disney mounts. Like can we get Rajah and Belle's horse and Mulan's horse and Horseman's horse, and Maximus, and Sven I guess and Slim's buffalo and my spooky side says tnbc skeleton reindeer but I don't think you could turn that one into a comfortable place to sit, maybe a "centaurette" from Fantasia and the black pegasus, Hercules Pegasus, elephant Abu (I don't think Carpet could be turned into one people wouldn't just fall off of), and...
Maybe just a neat little walkthrough Cave of Wonders? Idk
That's all I got for now

So it was said that M’Baku would be the Black Panther but the claws out shot doesn’t look like him. It very carefully shows little of the upper body shape that might reveal a female Black Panther, but whoever is in the suit in that shot definitely does not fit M’Baku’s build.
In the trailer for Wakanda Forever, we see a shot of M’Baku in a version of the Black Panther suit looking upwards ominously, and also there is a similar shot of Ayo and several Dora Milaje doing the same look with the same lighting. These Dora have fur collars, possibly an addition to the uniform when M’Baku took the mantle.
I think that Okoye left the guard after T’Challa’s death and Ayo became the head of M’Baku’s Dora Milaje after he became the Black Panther.
Now for some random speculation. I currently have three different theories:
1. The shots of M’Baku and Ayo are from the beginning of the movie. There is some initial altercation with the Atlanteans and M’Baku is either killed, gravely injured, or otherwise taken out of consideration to be the Black Panther. The movie will be about another character’s journey to rise to the occasion -- either Shuri or Nakia is my guess -- and one of them will become the Black Panther for the final climax which will be the claws out shot.
2. Shuri takes on the mantle of the Black Panther early on for the claws out shot but is killed by the Atlanteans. Then M’Baku takes on the mantle at some point afterwards. TBH this is only a theory in attempt to make sense of the queen’s comment about losing her entire family.
3. T’Chaka is the Black Panther in the claws out shot and it’s from Namor’s flashback. There is some instigating action between Wakanda and Atlantis that forms the beginnings of Namor’s antagonism. M’Baku takes on the mantle later.

HBO Max New Releases: October 2021
https://ift.tt/39ZMSFm
The fall is usually the domain of television. September and October are the months in which networks (and increasingly some streamers) debut all their new series. With its list of new releases for October 2021, however, HBO Max has decided that fall works just fine for new movies as well.
HBO Max’s new offerings this month are highlighted by two enormous Warner Bros. film releases. The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark opens things up on Oct. 1. The movie is getting a theatrical release as well but you can certainly just watch it via streaming to make Sopranos creator and film purist David Chase mad. Next up is the sprawling sci-fi epic Dune on Oct. 22. It’s long been thought that a faithful and suitably enormous Dune adaptation was impossible. Now it’s almost time to see if director Denis Villenueve pulled it off.

Even if the movies are the big blockbusters here, HBO Max isn’t letting its TV offerings go to waste. Arguably HBO’s biggest running drama, Succession, returns for a long-awaited third season on Oct. 17. Also mixed in to the streamer’s TV offerings are docuseries like 15 Minutes of Shame (Oct. 7) and What Happened, Brittany Murphy? (Oct. 15).
October will also be a good month for movie fans looking to check out some recent heavy hitters without buying a ticket. It: Chapter Two (Oct. 10), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (Oct. 21), and In the Heights (Oct. 28) all arrive this month.

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

Through the years, Bruce Wayne has become one of comics', movies', and even video-games' most beloved and favored characters as his alter-ego, Batman. The world's greatest detective has always shined as the badass vigilante with a moral code. Yet, comics have always pushed boundaries and asked themselves the question: what if?
RELATED: The Dark Knight: 5 Ways Batman And Joker Are The Best Hero-Villain Duo (& 5 Alternatives)
While not trying to copy Marvel, DC's given birth to dozens, if not hundreds, of alternative Batmen over the years. From his own universe and fellow heroes/villains to the ever-popular Elseworlds and the Dark Multiverse, alternative Batmen always seem to be popping up all over the DCU, for better or worse.
10 Batman Beyond
It wouldn't be a Batman list without mentioning the future version of Batman. In the futuristic Neo-Gotham, Bruce Wayne has given up the mantle of Batman. However, when Terry McGuinness comes across the Batcave, Bruce trains the boy to become the next Batman.
Batman Beyond ended up being an amazing animated series. Giving Terry time to grow and utilize the different gadgets and futuristic Batsuit, he took on amazingly strange villains, like Blight, Inque, and a future Joker possessing Tim Drake's body, all while under the mantle of Batman.
9 Jean-Paul Valley
Just about every Batman fan worth their salt knows of the events after "Knightfall", one of the best Batman comic arcs. After Bane broke Batman's back, Jean-Paul Valley, a university student who sees Bruce's tactics as Batman as obsolete and not as brutal as they should be, Valley took the mantel of Batman.
Equipped with a high-tech Batman suit, Valley brutally beat down Bane, took back Gotham, and declared himself its savior. After Batman healed from his injury, he fought and defeated Valley, who would later take on the name Azrael, forming an odd friendship with Black Canary and continuing his methods.
8 Jason Todd
Fans may know of Terry or Jean-Paul becoming Batman, but how many remember the time Jason Todd took the name? When Batman is presumed dead after the events of "Final Crisis," the cowl is up for grabs and somehow, Jason Todd manages to grab hold of it.
RELATED: 10 Best Villains in the Arkham Games, Ranked
Still using guns and behaving as if he's still the Red Hood, Todd was just as brutal as Jean-Paul, viciously killing criminals without mercy. Although his time as Batman was brief, with Nightwing serving as a better Batman, Todd proved that he should never again take on the mantel.
7 Vampire Batman
There have always been crazy rumors in the comics about Batman being a demon or a vampire. Of course, none of them are true ... on the main earth, that is. On "Red Rain's" earth, Batman does in fact become a vampire after a battle with Count Dracula.
Even after the count dies, Batman continues to protect Gotham as a vampire before giving in to the bloodlust after killing the Joker. Afterward, Batman became the undead, killing without remorse and throwing his code to the wind, embracing being a prince of darkness.
6 Lovecraftian Bat
Many fans assume that a vampire version of Batman is as crazy as the Elseworlds can get. It wasn't. "The Doom That Came To Gotham" is a Lovecraftian style comic written by Mike Magnolia and it turned Batman from an Urban Myth into a supernatural beast.
When the demonic Ra's Al Ghul rises from the grave, many citizens slowly begin to mutate into creatures, including Batman. By the end of the comic, Batman's able to bring down Ra's, but is stuck in the form of a massive Bat, forever protecting Gotham.
5 Elliot Ness: Batman
Mixing history and fiction is a fun concept, but it's always going to get weird. In another Elseworld, Bruce Wayne doesn't take up the mantle of Batman. Instead, Elliot Ness, in a bid to take on Al Capone, becomes the caped crusader.
RELATED: Batman: The Animated Series - 10 Villains The HBO Max Revival Should Focus On (That Aren't Joker)
It's as strange and awesome as it sounds, with Ness not even getting the name for dressing up as a bat, but rather for utilizing an actual baseball bat to beat on Capone's goons. With this strange new Batman fighting crime, Capone didn't stand a single chance.
4 The Batman Who Laughs
Beyond the typical Elseworlds and iterations who've taken up the mantle, there's always the Dark Multiverse. While there are plenty of awesome candidates, like the Devastator or Red Death, The Batman Who Laughs needs to be mentioned.
Recently, fans have felt like the Batman who became infected with Joker Toxin and became a twisted dark version of himself has been overused, even becoming a Doctor Manhatten version of himself called Darkest Knight. Despite this, The BWL is still a terrifying and intriguing version of Batman without rules or his code.
3 The Drowned
Again, there are plenty of Dark Multiverse iterations of Batman, too many to fit on one list. Yet, it's worth noting the Batman from Earth -11: Bryce Wayne, a female version of Batman who became the villain known as The Drowned.
After killing the leader of Atlantis, Aquawoman, Batwoman's world was devastated by a tsunami. Bryce was forced to resort to experimentation, changing herself into a Batman that breathed underwater and could corrupt anyone with her Dead Water. Add that to wiping out all metahumans and that's one crazy Bat.
2 Dark Claw
Crossovers are always fun, but there's always the chance they may go too far. When Marvel and DC comics joined forces to create a combined universe known as Amalgam, the craziness was elevated with the introduction of Dark Claw, a combo of Wolverine and Batman.
RELATED: 10 Best Female Batman Villains In DC Comics, Ranked
After watching his family die, Logan Wayne slowly unlocked his mutant ability and became the hero known as Dark Claw. Utilizing the Wolverine's claws and Batman detective skills, Dark Claw took on villains like the Hyena and became one of Amalgam's most popular characters.
1 Zur En Arrh
Unlike the other Batmen, Zur En Arrh is from the mind of Bruce Wayne. Originally an alien from the planet Tiano featured in Batman The Brave And The Bold, Zur En Arrh was updated for modern comics as being an alternative personality, with his flamboyant costume even being introduced to the Arkham games.
Absolutely insane, Zur En Arrh's origin is much darker than the originals. Leaving the theatre after a show, Thomas Wayne had remarked to his son that "Zorro would be locked up in Arkham" moments before the Waynes were gunned down. Those words became twisted in young Bruce's mind and gave birth to Zur En Arrh.

These days Louis tends to steer clear of dating alphas. He’s dated too many knotheads in his time, and he’s ready to just focus on school and his friends and his pet monitor lizard, of course.
Too bad the alpha next door won’t take a hint and stop using the worst pick up lines of all time on him. He’s really got to stop laughing with him–and talking to him and walking to class with him and letting him bring him coffee and tea and gifts for his lizard and watching Netflix together and…

Harry should have known Sean wasn’t serious about him, that Harry was just another lay, albeit a reliable one. He looks at the workout for the day and sighs.

They stand around talking for a minute and then Jonathan starts to ramble, “Has there ever been, like, an unrequited gay love story in here? Like a Brokeback Mountain moment where, like, someone just fell in love and they didn’t mean to?”
Louis feels bile rise in his throat as Jonathan’s eyes sparkle, pleading for a yes. He manages to look around and see thoughtful looks on his coworkers’ faces before their heads shake no.
“Not here,” Liam says finally.
When the Queer Eye cast and crew sweep into Louis’ small town and fire station to make over his best friend and coworker Liam, Louis’ carefully constructed walls start to fall down and he has to face his fears – and the only guy he’s ever been able to see a future with.

910: The Final Sacrifice
I grew up in Calgary, which means that the riff about Edmonton being kind of like hell but less so is at least six times funnier than it would be otherwise. My sister did her IT degree at the same school (the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) as the people in this movie were taking their film classes. I’ve probably been to places where they shot scenes and didn’t know it… all of which makes The Final Sacrifice particularly dear to my heart, even by MSTie standards.
Seven years ago, young Troy’s father was chased down and murdered by armed luchadors in the woods somewhere. Now, grown into a man of at least twelve, Troy is determined to find the killers. In an attic he discovers a mysterious map and a bunch of information about the ‘Ziox’, but before he can puzzle it out the luchadors attack! Troy escapes by climbing into a truck driven by Canada’s second-greatest hero (after Wolverine), the one, the only Zap Rowsdower. Together, the two of them set out to conquer Zap Rowsdower’s car trouble and uncover the secret of the Ziox, a lost civilization that once ruled the land of Fish Creek Provincial Park!
First, some Canadiana. The Lemon Mine is a legendary lost gold deposit supposedly found by prospector John Lemon. Also, Maple Syrup Rustling is a thing that goes on in Canada. Over the winter of 2011-2012, nearly three thousand tonnes of it were stolen from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, one barrel at a time. Canadians regard this in the same way as other countries might think of big art or bank heists, with the perpetrators becoming folk-culture heroes. Also also, Brain Guy was wrong. The worst thing ever to come out of Canada is, hands down, our geese, which attack livestock, destroy aircraft, and don’t even taste good. They are the worst of all birds and we apologize.
Second, some racism. According to the movie, the Ziox were a lost civilization who lived in Southern Alberta eleventy thousand years ago, “way before the Indians” and built cities of gold in the middle of the prairie. Since Sartoris and Zap Rowsdower, among others, are descendants of these people it appears they were supposed to be white. Because there’s no way anybody who wasn’t white could have built huge cities full of golden pyramids, right? It’s not like there were entire cultures in the Americas who were known for exactly that!
Those peoples didn’t live in southern Alberta, though, for the excellent reason that there’s nothing here. This area is miles upon miles of rolling grassland, from the foot of the mountains all the way to Manitoba, with not much in it but buffalo and buffalo by-products. There’s some sandstone you can build quaint town halls with, but not pyramids that will last thousands of years. The wildlife aren’t suitable for domestication. There’s no meaningful amount of gold. There weren’t even very many trees until Europeans started planting them as windbreaks. For as long as there’s an archaeological record, the indigenous peoples around here have been nomadic hunters. Permanent settlements couldn’t get started until the railway arrived to bring in supplies.
On to the movie. When you want to tell a big story but have only a little budget, one popular way to do it is by having most of your adventure happen in the middle of nowhere so you can save your money to make a big impression in only a few key scenes. Take, for example, The Princess Bride, which is mostly just a few people in the wilderness but put enough into the palace sequences to make us believe we were in a Renaissance-era world. The Final Sacrifice is a stellar example of a film that’s too damn cheap to even get away with that. They wanted demonic idols and spectacular caverns and an ancient city rising from the earth but all they got is a bunch of toothpick models and papier-mache, almost as pathetic as the dinosaur puppets in Future War.
The nail in the coffin is that The Final Sacrifice can’t even do wilderness very well. The outdoor scenes are in very open scrub, which are rather desolate but don't give the impression of somewhere miles from civilization. It looks, like I already observed, a lot like Fish Creek Park, which is about a twenty-minute walk from where I grew up and sees a steady stream of picnickers and brownie troops all summer. Any given shot in The Final Sacrifice looks like if you moved the camera three inches to one side you’d see a bunch of little kids making s’mores.
I’m pretty sure the writers originally had something much grander in mind, and had to tone it down a lot to get it to the screen with the money they had – because when you think about it, it’s obvious that The Final Sacrifice is a story about the lost continent of Atlantis. You’ve got an ancient advanced civilization that was punished for its hubris and blasphemy by sinking, and which promises untold power and wealth to whoever can find its remains. That’s a tale that ought to span continents, with adventurous archaeologists and deserted isles and plane crashes and such things… but all anybody had was a small town and some back woods a few hours’ drive out of Calgary, so they had to make do. The result feels like a story trying to be bigger than it is, as if the events in the movie only think they ought to have world-shaking implications but actually don’t matter to anyone.
Adding to the impression that there’s something missing from this movie, the story depends an awful lot on some very odd coincidences. I can buy that Troy lives only a couple hours’ drive from the site of the Ziox city – that’s where his father lived and worked, and since Troy’s aunt didn’t know about the cultists there was no reason for her to move. But then the truck he climbs into just happens to belong to a former member of the cult? Zap Rowsdower is supposed to be an alcoholic drifter who just wants to get away and forget, so why the heck is he still in the area? Canada is big. Go to Halifax. Go to Resolute Bay. Hell, leave the country. Why stick around within a few miles of the evil cult that threw you out?
Then there’s Pipper. He’s been hiding from the cult for years, he says, but he’s doing it in a cabin about ten meters (that's thirty-five feet for the Americans in the audience) from the site of the idol! That might make sense if he were guarding it, but he doesn’t know it’s nearby and professes to believe it’s just a legend. So what is he doing there? Movie audiences can handle magic and aliens and all kinds of other ridiculous things, but too many coincidences will kill suspension of disbelief in a way the overtly fantastical never can.
When you want to tell a big story in your movie, it’s also helpful if the audience knows what the characters want and what will happen if they fail. On the first count, I guess The Final Sacrifice does okay. We do know that Troy wants to find out why his father died and what’s up with all this stuff he left behind, and Zap Rowsdower just wants to get away from this distasteful part of his past but is sucked back into it by Troy whether he likes it or not. On what will happen if they fail, however, the film is much less clear. Sartoris talks about raising an army of invincible warriors and conquering the world, but it’s not clear how making a sacrifice to the idol in the woods will bring that about. Does Sartoris believe the city will arise full of undead soldiers or something? The only version of the associated legends we get comes from Pipper, who says nothing about any such thing. We’re obviously meant to believe that at least some of the population escaped the sinking, since they had to go give rise to descendants like Zap Rowsdower and the luchadors.
The ending is clearly supposed to be ironic, as it is Sartoris’ death that satisfies the idol and raises the city from the ground. This would have been more effective if Sartoris himself had lived long enough to appreciate the irony, but that much works well enough. The rest of the events at the end of the film just leave way too many questions. What happened to all the luchadors? They pull off their masks and walk into the light and out of the movie. Why did Zap Rowsdower’s tattoo disappear? Does Sartoris actually have some kind of magical powers, since he seems able to telepathically contact Zap Roswdower in his sleep? Did the city actually blast off into space, possibly taking the luchadors with it? Because there are definitely shots that make it look like that’s happening. What’s going on there?
Honestly, that’s not a bad explanation. Throwing some Erich Von Daniken, Pumaman or Hangar 18 bullshit into this would actually have made way more sense. Wow, is that ever sad.
It’s easy to be really hard on The Final Sacrifice because it is so very cheap, but on the other hand it was literally made by first-year students at a polytechnic not known for producing filmmakers. When you think of it that way, it actually looks surprisingly like a real movie… but still not enough that it should ever have been released into the wild. The fact that Tjardus Greidanus’ imagination was so much bigger than his budget makes it seem like he had some honest potential. He’s still making both narrative and documentary films, and I’m kind of interested to see some of them.

Justice League #32
He's leading them to Trump, isn't he?
If I'm ever time traveling with friends and somebody corrects me when I say, "Where are we?", by saying, "Don't you mean, 'When are we?'", I will fucking murder them.
Sometimes you read something by a writer and it just makes you think, "How much do they actually read?" I get that Snyder is a writer and not a reader but I really expect him to keep from writing stupid fucking shit lines from a time traveler like "When are we?" The argument could be made that, as much as I hate when somebody says that in a time travel movie, Snyder is just fucking tickled pink and couldn't wait to use that line in one of his own stories. But it would be a terrible argument and I would despise whoever made it.
This confirms one of two things: this isn't the real Lex Luthor who would never rely on something as ephemeral and unsure as faith or Scott Snyder seriously fucked this shit up.
Fuck faith and fuck everybody who thinks faith is a virtue. Also fuck everybody who is now desperate to explain to me how we all rely on faith to a certain extent, even with scientific data and theories. We need a new word for evidence-based faith. Maybe one exists and I'm too stupid to know what it is. But if somebody says I'm experiencing faith when I expect the sun to rise every morning, I simply assume they don't really understand faith. Or science. Or evidence, even. I'm also not saying don't have faith if you want to! But I am saying, "Fuck you if you expect me to think you're more virtuous because you have faith." Just believing in something you can't know is true because you desperately want it to be doesn't make you somehow stronger than other people. It makes you sad and desperate and willing to believe any fucking lie that comes along as long as it's something you want to believe.
Oh, maybe the evidence-based faith word is expectation? I expect certain things to happen based on past experience and current mathematical and scientific understandings of the reality we perceive!
I suppose the closest I get to faith is believing that I'm going to be alive tomorrow and then the next day and then the day after that. But I'm also prepared for a really hearty shrug of my shoulders when the plane I'm in suddenly begins its terminal nosedive. So, again, it's probably just more of an expectation.
Back in the 1940s, John Stewart and Barry Allen fight side-by-side with the Justice Society, a group of superheroes that everybody only recently learned existed. Who are these mysterious heroes? Why are so many of them blatant rip-offs of DC's other characters?! How many people almost thought, for half a second, that I really didn't know who they were?!
In the future, the Justice League and Justice Legion A battle the greatest version of Brainiac ever devised!
This issue is so crazy that this isn't the final page revelation!
I'm sure Snyder's initial pitch was for the Justice League to battle Brainiac Infinity but editorial told him he had to leave some room for future Brainiac-based disasters. I bet if Scott Lobdell had written this, the Justice League would be battling Brainiac Omnillion.
I stood up and cheered.
No matter how many times I've said in this blog that I stood up and cheered, I never actually stood up and cheered. I just need everybody to know my commitment to not actually getting out of a chair.
Back at Pearl Harbor, two Justice Leagues can't defeat the Legion of Doom so Aquaman arrives to save the day by defeating the Legion of Doom with a giant octopus and, I mean, my suspension of disbelief is really fucking being strained today. So apparently he wasn't a traitor. He just made a friend who sent him back in time to help the Justice League save the omniunimultiverse. The secret to saving everything is in Atlantis!
Notice the Justice Society never had a useless underwater hero. That's why they were the superior team.
The big surprise ending was not the revelation of Brainiac One Million nor the revelation that Aquaman was alive and also saving the day unbelievably. The real big issue ending revelation was that the Anti-Monitor has decided to join the Justice League to defeat his mother and the Legion of Doom! Although is it really that surprising that somebody chose to side against their mother? Or is that just me?
Justice League #32 Rating: B+. Fine, I'm enjoying this disaster! In historic comic book terms, it's not a disaster at all. It's a fucking ginormous super event! It's the Year of the Villain, snitches! Snyder has taken the concept of The Legion of Doom, which we all fucking love to death (don't fucking deny it, asshole!), and shot it up with steroids and Special K! This comic book makes me want to do five different types of drugs at once and fuck a dolphin. Damn, that should be the blurb on the eventual collected edition of this story!
