“Force is that which makes a thing of whoever submits to it. Exercised to the extreme, it makes the human being a thing quite literally, that is, a dead body. Someone was there and, the next moment, no one. [...]
The force that kills is summary and crude. How much more varied in operation, how much more stunning in effect is that other sort of force, that which does not kill, or rather does not kill just yet. It will kill for a certainty, or it will kill perhaps, or it may merely hang over the being it can kill at any instant; in all cases, it changes the human being into stone. From the power to change a human being into a thing by making him die there comes another power, in its way more momentous, that of making a still living human being into a thing. He is living, he has a soul; he is nonetheless a thing. Strange being—a thing with a soul; strange situation for the soul! Who can say how it must each moment conform itself, twist and contort itself? It was not created to inhabit a thing; when it compels itself to do so, it endures violence through and through.”  ― Simone Weil, War and the Iliad
one movie turns a thing into a soul, another turns souls into things.

as an afro-latina living in a new place with basically no latino population, hearing spanish and nahautl/maaya taan on a big screen from nakia and the talokanil made me sob.
so many afro-latinos/afro-indigenous people get to feel at home in both wakanda and talokan - this movie really is a gift.
also can we appreciate the fact that the representation is prevalent on the premiere tour too?? look at how much joy is in this dance alone??

I’ve been watching lots of interviews with Tenoch Huerta and I just feel so happy hearing him use his own accent when speaking in English. It might seem a bit silly and unimportant but to me it means everything.
Since I was little, while I was learning to speak English as a second language, I was always taught that I should use the British variety and accent because it was the ‘correct’ one. Whenever I used my own accent, I was reprimanded and told that no native English speaker would understand me if I spoke like that. This led to endless hours of practicing and feeling angry and ashamed of myself because I couldn’t pronounce certain words in the ‘right’ way. Thus, when I finally spoke to a native English speaker, I felt extremely self-conscious and insecure of the way I spoke a language that I had been studying for almost half of my life.
So, seeing actors like him (and also Diego Luna) being part of huge franchises and using their own accent and actually being proud of it means the whole world to me. It makes me feel less self-conscious and scared of speaking English. It is so unrealistic that we are expected to speak the same way a native English speaker does when we are not native English speakers. Why should I speak the same way an English person does if I’m not English? Why should I speak the same way an American person does if I’m not American?

I don't want to complain about free content, especially compared to the themes the original game had to offer, but the range of these selections is so underwhelming. A Dubai theme for instance would not be my first choice for a potential SWANA regional theme, but mods have demonstrated a clear demand since the beginning. The closest players have to a Latin American theme is just going with vague California and using their imagination I guess. 😐 And no attention to the (no longer second) most populous country on earth? I know the game just came out but hmmmm

Finally did Chimi! I decided to make the symbol in the background a golden look since that is how Maya finds the symbols carved in the library. 🐵💀🐵
Por hice a Chimi! Decidí hacer el símbolo en la parte atrás de color dorado como los símbolos que Maya encuentra en la librería. 🐵💀🐵

I’m so hyped for Wish 2023 not only because we’re getting our second Black Disney Princess, but we’re also getting our first Latina Disney Princess. And on top of that, she’ll be the first Afrolatina Disney Princess as well! Showing that there are different types of Latinas. It’s so groundbreaking, I’m so excited!

Just wanted to clear up some confusion with Asha from Wish, since I’ve been seeing it a lot. She’s not Afro-Latina but Afro Hispanic.
Tumblr media
I’m assuming the media gets it wrong because over in the west (USA, South, and Latin America) a lot of the Hispanic people here are also Latino, so we tend use the terms interchangeably although they are completely different things. But have an overlap in the west due to Spanish colonization.
Here’s a visual if anyone wants it:
Tumblr media
For anyone who don’t know, Spain and Portugal occupy the Iberian Peninsula, which is separated at its southern tip from North Africa by only a narrow strait situated at the juncture of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
I’m assuming since the name of Asha’s kingdom is Rosas, it’s closer to Spain. Also it wouldn’t make since to be associating her with being Latino( As I’ve already said a lot of people use Latino and Hispanic interchangeably due to the large overlap in the west) if she was assumed to be Portuguese or connected to Portugal in any way.
TLDR; Asha is Afro Hispanic, NOT Afro-Latina.

Kinda telling how much people want to defend Sunny so much because she speaks in the language that colonize the server (English) and not Leonarda, who went through the same stuff, but she only talks in Spanish
