at the risk of writing a small essay as usual, i've always found it baffling how so many people can't approach morality in rpgs outside of 'i'm a good boy, give me treats'

what is driving your character. what even is a good choice in the setting. is it the compassionate choice, is it the loyal choice, is it the one that causes less damage, is it the choice the leads to long term survival? what are your motivations? why are you treating your character like a dog in training?

in rt even iconoclastic choices aren't 'nice', they just value compassion and freedom more. but everyone is guilty and that's fine. same for the rebel path in tyranny. the choices are there to make the story/characters complex and interesting, it's not a moral purity test for the player. that's what makes alignment in so many rpgs narratively boring in the first place

#Tbh this is my main gripe with BG3 #And why I don't really have an interest in replaying it outside of with friends #There are no morally interesting choices #There's a clear “good” choice and clear “evil' choice #It's always like “kill children or don't kill children ohohoho what a terrible moral dilemma!” #And I'm like #That's not nuanced #My gripe is that it tries to present itself as super morally nuanced and interesting but it's not #I'm way more interested in replaying dragon age to explore choices because it's not clear what choice is “good” or “bad” #Except fuck the templars #Siding with them is always the wrong choice #Idk #Just needed to rant about that

i hope that the discussion about student protests does not get reduced to "privileged rich kids faffing around at an ivy league school." setting aside that tenuous claim, over the last week, protests have erupted over the entire country. a few days ago, riot police beat, pepper-sprayed, and arrested NYU faculty shielding students; protests started at the university of southern california when the admin cancelled the valedictorian's speech; encampments appeared at the university of southern carolina, UT dallas, the university of maryland, the university of new mexico, IUPUI, virginia tech, the university of virginia, the university of illinois, the university of north carolina — chapel hill, the university of pittsburgh, uc berkeley, the university of michigan — ann arbor, MIT, emerson, tufts, the university of rochester, rice, swarthmore, the new school, vanderbilt university, with students arrested; students protested or walked out at miami university, northwestern, temple, the 5 claremont colleges: pomona, pitzer, scripps, harvey mudd, and claremont mckenna, stanford, washington university in st louis, students were arrested at ohio state, students were confronted by riot police at cal poly humboldt, after which they occupied campus, students were arrested at the university of minnesota — twin cities, after which faculty walked out; and yes, there are protests at the other ivies, most notably yale, with students facing mass arests after encampments, but there is also an encampment at brown, protests appeared at cornell, princeton faculty issued a statement of solidarity while students are preparing an encampment, and harvard banned the undergraduate palestine solidarity committee. there are thousands of students who are protesting for palestine across the entire country, facing harassment, arrest, and suspension in return

The nazis that you see in movies are as much a historical fantasy as vikings with horned helmets and samurai cutting people in half.

The nazis were not some vague evil that wanted to hurt people for the sake of hurting them. They had specific goals which furthered a far right agenda, and they wanted to do harm to very specific groups, (largely slavs, jews, Romani, queer people, communists/leftists, and disabled people.)

The nazis didn't use soldiers in creepy gas masks as their main imagery that they sold to the german people, they used blond haired blue eyed families. Nor did they stand up on podiums saying that would wage an endless and brutal war, they gave speeches about protecting white Christian society from degenerates just like how conservatives do today.

Nazis weren't atheists or pagans. They were deeply Christian and Christianity was part of their ideology just like it is for modern conservatives. They spoke at lengths about defending their Christian nation from godless leftism. The ones who hated the catholic church hated it for protestant reasons. Nazi occultism was fringe within the party and never expected to become mainstream, and those occultists were still Christian, none of them ever claimed to be Satanists or Asatru.

Nazis were also not queer or disabled. They killed those groups, before they had a chance to kill almost anyone else actually. Despite the amount of disabled nazis or queer/queer coded nazis you'll see in movies and on TV, in reality they were very cishet and very able bodied. There was one high ranking nazi early on who was gay and the other nazis killed him for that. Saying the nazis were gay or disabled makes about as much sense as saying they were Jewish.

The nazis weren't mentally ill. As previously mentioned they hated disabled people, and this unquestionably included anyone neurodivergent. When the surviving nazi war criminals were given psychological tests after the war, they were shown to be some of the most neurotypical people out there.

The nazis weren't socialists. Full stop. They hated socialists. They got elected on hating socialists. They killed socialists. Hating all forms of lefitsm was a big part of their ideology, and especially a big part of how they sold themselves.

The nazis were not the supervillians you see on screen, not because they didn't do horrible things in real life, they most certainly did, but because they weren't that vague apolitical evil that exists for white American action heros to fight. They did horrible things because they had a right wing authoritarian political ideology, an ideology that is fundamentally the same as what most of the modern right wing believes.

I’m actually still reeling from this. What do you MEAN she DIED??? I just started figuring out this adhd stuff a year or so ago, and have waited months to start being evaluated (which I know in American healthcare is no time at all), we had one initial video consult, and I had the next two appointments scheduled, and she just. Died???

Let me be clear, I’m not trying to be insensitive to her or her family. This is awful. I’m just. Reeling at the circumstances. Like. What am I supposed to do now? I was supposed to get evaluated to get treatment and she was the best of the best. I wanted to start medication so I could kick this caffeine addiction. And that’s just. Even more on hold now. My adhd is the worst it’s ever been and I was SO looking forward to working with her. She seemed amazing and understanding and knew her stuff, and she’s just. Gone. And that option is just. Gone.

Thank you for sticking with me while I process this.
