Velvette Slang Masterlist: for the fandom

A gift from a humble Brit to anyone (not from the UK) wanting to write Velv convincingly ~

Hello you wayward sinner!

Are you looking to write Velvette into a fan fiction, comic, roleplay or something else? Would you like to make her sound legit but you have no idea about British (or indeed, South London) slang? FEAR NOT! I, Bapple, am here to hold your hand and guide you through the wonderful world of British slang so you can have fun making Velv sound legit. Let's proceed!

Not all of this will be limited to the UK, of course, and it's not an exhaustive list of ALL British slang either - it's just the kind of things Velv WOULD say as someone from South London.

Insults

For men: bastard, prick, wanker, knob, dickhead, wankstain, bellend, git, tosser, sod, cock, pillock, numpty, codger (means old man)

For women: bint, bitch, slag, wench, slut, tart, trollop, scrub

For anyone: arsehole, arse, twat, sket, muppet, minger (means ugly), bugger, gobshite, cretin

The absolute worst thing you can call someone else is cunt - this is very strong and isn't used in casual conversation, unless you are in VERY informal company, in which case it's thrown around like it's nothing at all. (Come here you cheeky cunt - playful)

Terms of Endearment

Babes, hun, luv, darlin', sweetheart, mate, sweetie, mucker, pal, blud, fam, dear, dearie, honey

Eg: "Alright babes? How's it going darlin?'"

British people often use insults affectionately, too, especially with close friends as a way to tease / banter. (You silly sod, you useless prick, you cheeky git, you daft muppet, etc)

Slang Words

Drunk: trollied, smashed, pissed, wasted, legless, hammered, sloshed, battered, bladdered, merry, shitfaced, arseholed, plastered, lashed

Good: banging, well good, mint, the dogs bollocks, ace, blinding, cracking, brill, fab, neat, beast, fresh, hench, jokes (that's jokes innit), lush, peng (good looking), sick, wicked, peak, wavy

Bad: grim, naff, shite, shit, crap, tat (useless old tat), minging, rank, dry, nasty, humming (means gross)

Pleased: chuffed, buzzing, tickled pink, sorted (I'm sorted mate)

Annoyed: gutted, miffed, pissed off, fucked off, fuming, raging, ticked off, well annoyed, bovvered (used more sarcastically eg: I aint bovvered), vexed

Curses

Bollocks, fucking hell, bloody hell, bugger, piss off, any of the insults used above

Other random words

Bare = a lot of (eg bare money)

Chirpsing, grafting = flirting

Garms = clothes

Lips = kiss (are you tryna lips me?)

Peng ting = good looking person / high quality thing

Standard = of course, yeah no duh (Yeah that's standard mate.)

Tight = cheapskate (Don't be so bloody tight!)

Yard = your house (Come over to my yard)

Banter = conversation that's funny, casual, playful (S'just banter innit)

Convo, chinwag, chat = conversation

Defo = short for definite (Oh he's defo up to something)

Other random phrases

Are you taking the mick? = are you mocking me?

Stop faffing around = be serious and stop messing about

That's mad = wow, I can't believe what you just said or that's amazing

Allow it = just leave it, it's no big deal (Whatever mate, allow it)

Other helpful pointers

When British people (who talk like Velv) swear angrily we do so many times in a whole sentence and add a lot of qualifiers, eg:

"Fuck off you fucking prick, you absolute fucking useless arsehole!"

"Don't piss me off babes or I'll fucking end your shitty little life!"

Making a crude observation about something nearly always a curse in-front of it, eg:

"That's fucking rank."

"It was fucking buzzing mate!"

The Magical Use of Innit:

Innit is a wonderful word that can be used everywhere, especially for someone from South London. It basically means "isn't it?" but it has MANY uses. It can be used to mean an agreement, like "I know right?"

"That was well good innit"

"He's a right twat" - response: "INNIT!"

"It's fuckin grim in here" - "Innit mate"

Adding "well" to words

That was well good - that was well bad - that was well grim

(You get the idea)

you know it truly amazes me how you can't do practicly anything on tiktok or search the thing you like without getting absolutley shat on

Like I'm feeling a little in the mood for rottmnt angst A lil bit of that kick in the gut, and I can't go 3 minutes without one of those made in 5 minutes max videos that's just background video and text over it Saying shit like "Yall need to stop with the rottmnt angst it's getting annoying" or "the rottmnt angst artist need to chill out" or even better "The rottmnt fandom needs to stop the angst it's just a show for kids"

First off, if angst isn't your thing, you can block it or just scroll pass it OR you know what if youre feeling like a little shit you can hate read it or whatever but keep the comments TO YOURSELF

Second off I checked what the content of most of these people is And it's always goddamn always those 10 second background videos with text over it

Let's say you see a legal completly normal ship you don't like Example let's say leo x usagi or raph x mona

What you wanna do is scroll or block it

NOT make up info to make others stop shipping it, I'm sick and tired of people non stop saying that usagi or mona are adults or that their entire characters are being love intrest in the fandom's eyes Because if you look at any of the fanfic's or fan content of those Yeah it's easy to find content where there love intrest's but it is hard to find content where there ONLY love intrest

People love mona so much for the fact that she's a badass warrior who loves her planet and people they often give her more backstory focused stories that explore how she would feel depending on where the writers story will go or already went, I have never seen anyone maker her just a typical love intrest (witch honestly suprised me)

Usagi? People have more free will with his interpretation's so he has many many diffrent faces backstories, personalities but often people make him focused on something in their stories, examples being, getting back home, protecting others, getting over something, fighting in battle nexus and exploring how it would be Etc. Etc. That mixed with being a love intrest

The only times when these two can be seen as just love intrest and nothing more is in

Edit's/tiktok content where everything is short af (and even then sometimes people give em backstories and their own lore it really amazes me sometimes lmao)

short (usualy) tagged as fluff without plot fics on ao3 (witch you can litellary tag out SO easily)

Little comics/some art pices That HAVE VERY STORT LIMITS

also this might suprise you it really might but DRAWING IS HARD AND TAKES ALOT OF TIME SAME GOES FOR MAKING THE IDEA UP

And when it comes to their ages we all know there not adults, littelary where did anyone mention mona being an aduly ever, and the only times when usagi and leo accualy interact is when there in similiar if not the same ages

(in 2003 usagi and leo are close friends and Both teens, in the early comics there both adults when they first meet, even in 1987 version there both shown to be close if not the same age, the ONLY TIME where leo and usagi have very diffrent ages is in 2012 and honestly i have a little theory on why specificly that version had them be you know that but that's for another post)

Seriously what the fuck is tiktok's problem with any form of fanon content? You want the fandom to die? It aint gonna happen, you either get used to some bad stuff existing there and there and ignoring it (reporting then ignoring it if it's really bad) OR you keep quiet OR you will get banned by alot of creators after crying in their comments, then cry when you can't find something they made anymore

Tiktok man, good for daydreaming to the sounds, looking at edits and for some art trends but litellary can't let anything else exist on there or else you'll explode

alright so. picked up logan legacy #3 today(i think i got more than 150 comics now, i should count em again lol) and ohhh my GOD i forgot how fucking gay it was….. context -> wolverines dead and victors trying to cope. badly.

hes dressing random short guys and talking to them like theyre logan. just to pretend hes still around. just to get out some final words. and this isnt the first time hes done this either, its like a weekly thing.

so yea. thats his coping mech. makes him happy…for a bit.

but he doesnt like talking about it.

then he wakes up. and feels sad.

then immediately goes to fill the hole in his heart again.

at the end of the story, he realizes that he’s gonna have to move on without him(and this is also the beginning of his inverted arc).

Sorry if this is a bad question or more likely just hopeless. I’ve been trying to find a good Connor Hawke comic to read (first found out about him in Damian’s Robin solo and he and Rose were the only two things I liked besides the Robin chase but I’m a bat brat) and I’ve only read the Silver Monkey story and as I’m not a fan of Oliver Green at all (my exposure to him has in no way been positive) and I HATE Dixon and I know he’s the main writer for Connor, but I had to drop the Tim solo because of his obvious, I guess bigotry would be the right word to use here, but he is one of the three writers I refuse to let myself read anymore to try and keep my blood pressure low. Are there any Connor stories or series that exist outside of those parameters to read because I’m having 0 luck. I’m also not sure if you’re a fan of Mia or Emilio or have any go-to stories for them, but I know nothing about them and I’d like to change that if at all possible.

i understand, i do i do. while i think dixon is capable of good character writing, and he did manage to do it in connor's run, i also understand his very very obvious politics shine through all the time and it gets tiresome (at one point in his ga run he manages to write OLIVER QUEEN "both sides"ing literal nazis that he and hal fought in GL/GA). here's the best i can do for recs outside of dixon (though few and far between)

Before i start, i do wanna clarify that his character in robin is. well. pretty different from his actual pre-established character. I'm not saying you won't like him, and im genuinely begging you to give him a shot, but if youre looking for the snarky brawler type, you might be a lil thrown by the polite buddhist monk you're gonna get.

you are in luck, as his first few appearances were by kelley puckett, so if you havent already read GA vol. 2 #0, do that first! #91 and #92 are also by puckett until dixon takes over for #93, so read those if you dont mind just stopping in the middle of an arc, otherwise avoid.

now this next rec IS 1/3 written by dixon but if you can get through it, the crossover connor has with wally and kyle is enjoyable, thats Green Lantern Vol. 3 #96, GA Vol. 2 #130, and The Flash Vol. 2 #135

Connor's JLA run! JLA Vol. 1 #8-#15, #8 and #9 are specifically about connor saving and joining the league, the rest of the issues just feature him in a team setting, as, well, its the league.

if you want to read mia as well, read Green Arrow: Quiver (GA Vol. 3 #1-#10), Connor plays an important role but its almost entirely in the very last issue, and it's more about Ollie's role dynamic with him than anything else, so just read that if it tickles your fancy.

I wish i could recommend more of GA Vol. 3 for connor, unfortunately he's pretty fucking sidelined, and for every good moment theres 2 bad ones. (immediately after quiver he is shot and put in a coma for an arc, somehow this isnt the last time this happens.) Though i do recommend #11, and i think #21 is a good issue to read for ollie and him, but it also includes a pretty huge retcon to Connor and Ollie's past

Other than those, he has One-shots in Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: "One", DC Pride 2022: "Think Of Me", and DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration: "Hawke & Kong"

as for Emi, your best bets are Green Arrow Vol. 5 #18-#20, #22, #28-#34 for her origin (though read N52 green arrow at your own risk, even i havent properly read these), Green Arrow Vol. 6 #1-#7 (this may feel like a completely new character, i'm sorry, dc has a angsty characterisation problem, if you enjoy either of these characterisations, i'd recommend you keep reading said runs past my specific recs for more issues with her!) and Stargirl Spring Break Special + Stargirl: The Lost Children #1-#6

While I do believe some of the criticism LO receives in terms of story are understandable because there's some things that could be better in the story I also cant help but notice that other things talked abour when regarding LO are more personal opinions and just consist on spewing pure hate from people who only focus on some minor details or downright has nothing better to do than shit on the comic, its characters or creator.

1. Persephone isn't a Mary Sue, sure she's kind, friendly and always wants to do the right thing but she still has flaws and makes mistakes like her driving without a liscence, giving money to the shades, keeping secrets, her acting violent even if she has reason to (cough Asspollo cough) or smirking at Ares getting his ass wrecked by her mom. People still scold her for some of the things she does but not as harshly because she isn't a reckless teen but an adult. All the main characters in the story are adults so they are gonna act like it, not like hormonal teens . Plus regarding her trial, Persephone knows she deserves to face the consequences for what she did but she was afraid of the Trial cause it wasn't done with intention to seek righteous justice but to show people that Zeus was the leader of Olympus. The main difference between Kore and Minthe is that while both are insecure about themselves, Persephone doesn't take it out on others and instead tries to improve herself whereas Minthe likes to cause damage to others; she literally likes talking shit of people, endagered Persephone by sending her to Tartarus just so she couldn't see Hades and put Demeter on danger too with the Trial,not just Persephone. And no, the comic didn't do her dirty as she got and took a chance for self improvement and cut off her toxic friend for good.

2. Hades may be rich but he's no Christian Grey. Sure he likes Persephone but he respect her boundaries and treats her like a person and not a possesion like Asspollo, he literally said that he wasn't entitled to her in the 1st season. Sure he's not a perfect saint but he's not a monster either, he didn't fire Minthe or took away her apartment even if he could have after she physically and verbally abused him at work using one of his deepest fears and he did apologize to Thanatos for his treatment of him.

3. Thanatos, Minthe and Zeus aint assholes just for not liking Persephone x Hades, the story doesn't treat them as a monsters for dislikng Persephone but are still shown to be dicks due to how they treated her and Hades as well as others. Minthe greatly disliked Persephone out of jelaousy to the point of endagering her by sending her to Tower 4, liked to rub in her face that Hades was hers uncaring if Hades didn't like it and she tried to get her on Trial by painting her as a villain in the story they told Zeus which affected not only Kore but Demeter as well and also abused Hades. But they still have her a chance to redeem herself and bettering herself as we saw in s3 and she's doing much better now.

Thanatos outright didn't like Persephone, the 1st time they met was when he shoved her with his wings to take the train but even then Kore didn't treat him badly, she even shared her baklaba with him. And what does he do later? Basically insulting her in front of Hecate calling her a moron. While he may be right about Hades maybe being in the wrong for letting her work in the library as she's shown to struggle with stuff on her 1st day that didn't mean he had the right to wotk with Minthe and Thetis to ruin Persephone's life just out of jelaousy and wanting the love of Minthe. He maybe regretted his actions but it doesn't erase them. At the very least hes doing better now with a better partner than Minthe.

Zeus's Trial was wring because he didn't seek justice but to show everyone hes the boss of Olympus even if it meant delivering barbaric and undeserved punishments. He was a dick to Persephone in her Trial alongside her mom, going so far as gaslighting Demeter when she brought up his mistreatments of her. He had reasons to do what he did and we can understand it but he still unnecesarily prolonged Persephone's banishment even if she did everything that was asked of her right which wasn't only affecting her or hades but everyone as well cause they couldn't visit their loved ones and the situation in Olympus wasn't great not only that but tried to get Hades to forget about Persephone with Euridice. But at the very least when Kore saved everyone from Kronos, Zeus lifted her punishment and allowed Hades and Persephone to get married.

4. Demeter isn't a great mom but shes not a cruel monster, she was just lonely and wanted some company so she gave birth to Kore. And despite her shortcomings as a mother, she loves her daughter but deep down wants her to be safe as she knows how cruel the world can be. Of course this doesn't excuse her treatment towards Kore but as weve seen theyre trying to work things out between Kore and Demeter so there's hope for them

If you ask me, most of the "LO Critical" crowd's criticism towards the Webtoon consists of them hating the source material for not playing out how they want/ed it to, going on non-stop about Persehade's age gap romance and calling a relationship between two consenting adults "pedophilia" (the haters sure love to infantilize Persephone), and bashing the author as a person over fiction.

sakura never made fun of naruto for being an orphan . yeah thats it . no matter how much naruto dude-bro's may lament over it she never did it. i mean their sakura hate is so comical they keep inventing weird shit to back it up , but here are the panels from the manga for reference:

she is not "making fun" of naruto in either of these panels though she says a bunch of stuff-

"naruto was badly brought up"

-im sorry ? do you object to this? do you think naruto was not badly bought up? idk what to even say here, when usually naruto wankers' lament over how sad were the conditions in which naruto was bought up and how hiruzen is a trashy caretaker , also notice how sasuke doesnt care when she says that and continues to walk past

"how he always comes between us"

um.. considering the shit naruto was just doing(beating sasuke , tying him up, and then fcking trying to kiss sakura disguised as sasuke!! ) and before that (sitting on desk and glaring at sasuke because sakura likes him and he is popular) i dont think sakura's complaint is very misplaced , and it could be that he might have done similar shit prior to this

"dont you envy him for being alone, not having parents to nag at you all time"

This is somewhat insensitive and not to naruto , who isn't even present at the moment but to sasuke because she is ASKING sasuke if he envies naruto because his parents dead .sakura saying to sasuke (indirectly) that lack of family is something one should feel good about and is lucky for .(although compared to the shit naruto and kakashi and even lee give sasuke on his clan in particular this is something that is indirect and somewhat subtle and is not intended to berate sasuke in anyway )

P.S.: she is not a psycho who wants her parents dead or anything she wants to be alone and to not have her parents nag at her or ground her

but I never saw this as delinquent or unsual behaviour from sakura's POV, because sakura is a normal 13 year old !!

it would make perfect sense for a teen to want to be alone , to be rebellious, and to not want your parents tell you how to do everything!

especially since kishimoto wanted sakura to be a charechter that is relatable to young girls

however post time skip sakura's views have on family seemed to have changed a bit when she asks sasori "what is family to you?!"

i really really cant understand how psychos of naruto fandom would give a pass to-no askchually WORSHIP charechters like Itachi (who is a fucking remorseless genocidaire!) and hate this girl , i made a post before but it seems its a lot of misogyny acting up, aint it - for she not only rejects naruto(which is a big sin in itself) , she HATES him , and doesnt coddle him (most of the time-although there are moments when she does), she doesnt give two hoots about him a lot of the time and is fangirling on sasuke -oh the misery!! - arent these reasons enough to take petty things about her and constrew them as though they were on a whole different league of evil .

well.. sakura's speculation on why naruto is selfish is sort of misplaced but somewhat makes sense comparing to the shit naruto has done up to now i dont think she is wrong in calling him selfish -he does what he wants without giving a damn about anyone else ,that is selfish -isnt that what he did just now, he beat sasuke, tied him up and went to kiss sakura without giving 2 hoots bout either one of them, and got no consequences for it ! if sakura wouldve attempted something similar then she would've been punished severely by her parents, who would perhaps also make sure that something like this never happened again. - is there something wrong in what she said here ? i dont quite understand...

To sum up everything , all she says is :

1. Naruto is badly brought up

2. He does fucked up shit because he's badly bought up

3. He has no one to watch over so he does selfish things

4. Sakura wishes she could do a lot if the things naruto does and is envious at how far he can go without getting reprimanded

Thinking of DEMON KAZUTORA who wants to stay in the overworld bc his world sucks so when you accidentally summon him, he knows you don't know anything about demons, so he's using that to his advantage

DEMON KAZUTORA who doesn't tell you how to send him back so he gets to chill and bother you all day, poking at anything interesting you have and asking you a dozen questions about humans and your interests

DEMON KAZUTORA who can turn into a cat to hide his demon form. He's a bengal breed which basically is a cat that looks like a tiger.

DEMON KAZUTORA who begs you to take him outside so he can see the city, so he clings to the inside of your hoodie, poking his head from your collar to see the world, his fur tickling your chin in the process as he looks around with big curious cat eyes, marveling at any and everything he sees.

DEMON KAZUTORA who never gets summoned, so everything is a new experience for him, so ofc he's overjoyed over the simplest things :(

DEMON KAZUTORA who tastes human food and sweets for the first time and literally cries, hot tears rolling down his face as he clenches his chest, the thought of tasting something so good making his heartache since "He doesn't have this back at home..."

DEMON KAZUTORA who tries desperately to make a contract with you so he wouldn't be forced to leave once his time is up

DEMON KAZUTORA who grows attached to you and your antics so he's helping you around the house. The way his eyes are trained on yours whenever you explain something to him is adorable. He's so focused, eager to make you happy that he did something right.

DEMON KAZUTORA who whines anytime you leave without him, already in kitten form with his teeth holding on for dear life onto the pants you're wearing, attempting to pull you away from the door. He sulks around the house when you do eventually leave, but as soon as he catches a whiff of your scent or hear the sound of your keys, he's already ready to greet you at the door, tail wagging excitedly as he patiently waits, ready to tell you how much he missed you and how bored he was.

DEMON KAZUTORA who's favorite thing to do is watch movies and shows with you. He gets a lot of information from them, but the best part is he gets to cuddle with you

DEMON KAZUTORA who loves when you rub his horns, wings, or his little heart shaped demon tail. You also point out his little fangs which always makes his face heat up. he secretly wants to bite you

You aint hear that from me 🏃🏾‍♀️💨

I swear his tail gives away his emotions. It comically points straight up whenever he's surprised or flustered and curls around himself when he's shy/nervous.

DEMON KAZUTORA who's heart jumps anytime you try to get him so go back where he came from. Screaming words like "Begone demon! depart! goodbye! cut loose! May the power of Christ compel you!" scared when you actually get close to saying the words that would send him back.

DEMON KAZUTORA who sneaks in your bed in cat form, and in your sleepy daze you're fine with that. Then you wake up to his arms wrapped tightly around you, back pressed to his chest, face snug against your neck as his soft breath tickles your skin. UGHHH I NEED THISS PLSSS SHJERHS

DEMON KAZUTORA who sometimes doesn't understand boundaries especially when you're upset with him, so you have to slam the door in his face. He knows he could easily get in if he wanted to, but instead he uses his cat form, tiny paws clawing from under the door, begging to be let in along with many meows and apologies that you eventually cave into 🥺

He's a clingy demon, and god forbid another gets close to you. He'll wrap his arms tightly around you and glare daggers to whoever it is.

DEMON KAZUTORA though he isn't a popular demon, he isn't weak either. So he'll fight a mf if he needed to. He's protective, but not overbearing. He'll be grumpy if you bring another guy home, but he won't bother you, just stare menacingly at the guy in his cat form like >:( and it freaks the fuck out of your guest.

This throws you tf off an then you get all flustered as he chuckles. He knew he coulda just flew up and got it for you, but this is so much better.

you actually sent this request to me after I already got the 10 i needed, but I was already planning to put Rinne here so it worked out in the end??

When Rinne Amagi, leader of Crazy:B and king of troublemakers asked for you to come with him someplace, the signals were basically blaring inside your head. Not that you actually had a choice, seeing as he already had an arm around your shoulder and started dragging you with him, either not hearing or just straight up ignoring any words of protest coming from you.

To say you didn't like Rinne could be quite the understatement. He'd always do these kinds of unreasonable things, and just expect for you to play along. You know that getting riled up is exactly what he wants, but it's not like you can just bottle up your grievances against him! Even now, he can just squeeze you in tighter as you try to flail around to no avail.

When you realized that trying to escape was just a waste of energy, you decided to just hang your head low and follow his lead. Still though, it did make you a bit embarrassed to be this close to Rinne. Sure, he was crass, loud, and did nothing but cause problems for you; but you know that it's not like he ever did anything with purely bad intentions, and if it really comes down to it, he was objectively a pretty attractive guy.

You quickly dispel such thoughts, realizing that such an intuitive person as him could probably find out what was on your mind if you linger on it for too long. "Amagi-san... Where are we even going?" A sigh made its way out of your mouth at the end of your question.

"Come on now, we're best buds aint' we? Just call me Rinne already!" He lets out that signature hyena laugh of his and you wonder when exactly he started considering you a 'best bud' of his, or maybe he was just trying to get a reaction out of you? I mean, sure maybe to other people you two would seem close, but you know within yourself that you did not like this man at all. You try your best to keep a poker face, and it seems like it was good enough to dissuade him.

"I made it big at the pachinko machine earlier! So now I gotta spend all this cash while I'm still feelin' the high!" Your face sours at that, partly wondering whether or not to even bother scolding him on that awful outlook. When Rinne suddenly stopped, you looked up to see that the two of you were at the entrance of a nearby mall. You sighed again; he really was about to spend his money, wasn't he?

He brings the two of you to the first store he could lay his eyes on, which seemed to be cute store full of plushies and other toys. He grabs a bunch of random stuff off the shelves and shows them to you, his sparkling eyes catching you off guard. "Hey, which of these do you think otouto-kun would like?"

When you look at the things he was presenting, it was quite difficult to make a choice, seeing as he just grabbed all sorts of things. "Hmm..." You took a good look at everything, before coming to a pretty sound conclusion. "If it's your little brother, he'd be plenty happy with anything just as long as it was you that got it, wouldn't he?"

Rinne ponders on your words for a bit, his finger on his chin as he makes a comical thinking face. "I guess so. Still, what looks good here?" He nudges the things back at you, and you take another look at them. There were a bunch of kids' playthings like action figures, dolls, cars, and plushies. Jesus, how old was the target demographic that Rinne was going for?

"I guess this? It's got a sketchy looking face, like you." The fox plush you were pointing at did have quite the strong resemblance to Rinne, and while you'd never admit this next part, it actually looked quite cute. Rinne turned the plush in question to look at him, imitating the dumb smirking expression it had. "cute."

Your eyes widened when you realized what you just said, but you start to thank every known God in existence as it seemed like Rinne didn't hear you. Rinne then turns to look back at you. "What's up? Somethin' on my face?" He moves a bit closer to you, pretty much forcing you to look at his face. When he's up close like this, you really can't help but admire how handsome he is.

You can feel your face start to heat up and decide that literally nothing would be worse than having Rinne see that. "Huh?! Hell if I know, go look at a mirror or something!" Before he could even reply, you brisk walked all the way out, leaning against a nearby wall. You were quite curious as to what he was going to end up buying though, seeing as he showed you some pretty childish options for his younger brother.

You start massaging the space between your eyes, when you suddenly feel a hand on your shoulder. He didn't even seem all that troubled by how you shouted at him earlier. "Alright! Next stop!" He holds you by the wrist and drags you to a jewelry shop, letting you sit down on one of the chairs as he looks at the stuff they had on display.

When you realized this might take a while, you decided to go check some of the stuff out too, seeing some reasonably priced accessories like necklaces, rings, and such. They seemed like the type that Rinne would often wear, so you wonder if this was a shop he frequented.

Your eyes land on a pendant that had a modestly sized jewel of your favorite color on it, making a mental note to come back to this place soon once you had some money to spare. You decided that it would probably best to go back to Rinne, turning around before bumping into something.

You look up to see that Rinne standing right in front you, and you wondered just how long he was there. "Uwah?! What do you think you're doing?!" You quickly made space between the two of you, taking a few steps to the side. Rinne's eyes linger on what you were looking at for a few seconds, before he let out a small chuckle.

"I'll be here a while. I'm not sure what a good gift for MERUMERU would be, so just sit tight somewhere nearby would ya'?" He makes a shooing motion, signaling for you to go and find something else to do. A part of you was kind of disheartened at that, a slight frown appearing on your face before you did as he said.

You were walking around aimlessly, though still close enough to the store so that Rinne could find you easily if he were to finish soon. Though the day has been quite hectic so far, you can't say that you completely hated it. Sometimes you wonder why Rinne even hangs around you, compared to him, you found yourself to be a total square. You can't even admit to yourself that you like him, and you treat him badly because of that.

What if one day he gets tired of that? Of you? To try and shift your thoughts, you slap your cheeks more forcefully than you wanted, having to wince in pain at what you just did. "Ugh... Stupid Rinne." You cover part of your face with the back of your hand, knowing full well that you were blushing quite a bit.

"Oh? Turns out you can call me by my first name!" Your jaw drops when you realize that the worst possible person to have heard you, just heard you. Your mouth starts making all sorts of weird sounds as Rinne pulls your hand down, showing your blushing face to him in all its glory. "Wouldja' look at that? You're way cuter like this, you know?"

Rinne puts on his iconic hyena laugh as he started to poke your cheeks, making you even more embarrassed than ever. "Come on, aren't you gonna' yap at me like usual?" Rinne was more than ready to play this game for the long run, until he realized your eyes were starting to water. "I love you."

"HUHHHHH?! Someone starts crying and THAT'S the first thing you say to them? Just how stupid can you be?!" Rinne didn't even give you time to react before putting you in a headlock and giving you a noogie. "Are you an idiot?! What are you doing!"

"Kyahaha! That's more like it! Can't have you cryin' on me on our first date now can I?" Ugh, just what is this guy talking about? You wanted to complain some more, but you suddenly realized you didn't even want to cry anymore; let alone feel sad. Not that you'd give him any credit for this, seeing as he was the source of your grief to begin with. He lets you go, rustling your hair a bit before a more serious expression appears on his face. "I love you."

"I heard you the first time!" You don't really know why, but you can somehow tell that he was being serious. He's trying to hide it, but you can see how his hands were shaking ever so slightly, and how the tips of his ears were just the slightest twinge of red; though that was hard to make out because of his hair being a similar color.

"I love you." He repeats like a broken record, his piercing blue eyes not wanting to stop looking at you for even a second. "I lo-"

You put your hand over his mouth, your heart not being able to hear that phrase even just one more time. "Okay! I get it! Stop saying it already!" You can hear his muffled voice try to sound out another 'I love you' and you suddenly feel like punching him in the face instead of giving him a proper answer.

You close your eyes and take a deep breath, needing what little help you can get in order to mentally prepare yourself for what you were about to do. When you decided you were ready, you pulled your hand away from his mouth, looking him in the eyes. "I'll only tell you this once, so clean those ears out and listen up." Rinne's eyes start sparkling, and you suddenly feel a whole new level of nervousness. "I love you too, you big idiot."

You were preparing yourself for whatever it was he would do next, not sure if he would pull you in for a hug, or scream at the top of his lungs, or maybe even admit this whole thing was an elaborate prank. But when none of that happened, you couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at his relative silence. "Hey, Earth to Rinne? You there?"

You shake your head when you receive not even a nod in response. "You still need to finish shopping, don't you? Come on." You realized by now that he probably only came here to buy gifts for his friends, and probably made you help him pick out gifts as a pretense for going out with you.

You turn around and try to look for a good shop for the two of you to visit next when you suddenly feel something around your neck. You tilt your head down to see that the pendant you were looking at earlier was now situated on you. Then, you felt something placed on top of your head, grabbing it with your hand to reveal that it was the fox plush that you found rather cute earlier.

You sighed, finally realizing what was going on here. Rinne probably intended on buying all sorts of stuff that you wanted and then giving them to you as a gift at the end, but without making it obvious to you by disguising it as gifts for his friends.

You grabbed Rinne by the wrist, taking the initiative this time as you point at a nearby shop. "Well? What are you waiting for? You won it big right? I'm not letting you go until I squeeze every last penny out of you!" This time, it was Rinne letting out a sigh as he got dragged from place to place, his wallet bleeding more and more as the day went by.

When Rinne had not even a single cent left, the two of you found yourselves absolutely swarmed with an innumerable number of bags and wrapped presents. Rinne would usually totally hate this kind of situation, after all, not having money means not being able to gamble. But being able to make you smile this much makes him think that maybe it's a price he's more than willing to pay.

"I lo-" Rinne got cut off when he felt you flick your finger right at his forehead.

"I get it, dummy. I'll be in your care from now on, then."

Yep, Rinne knew that he certainly wouldn't regret giving his all to you.

Been thinking about HS2, as you do. And to be honest, I have no idea how we got here. I mean I know a bunch of shit happened to Hussie over the debacle of the game. But how did we get to HS2. Like, it hates you. HS2 reads like it hates the reader, it hates homestuck, it hates the reader for enjoying homestuck. I would call it misery porn, but even misery porn has some sort of catharsis. Some kind of release. HS2 does not. Its just an anon telling you to kill yourself, over and over for the length of the Epilogue and HS2 up to this point. The former team members, are allegedly, the progressive leftist type, yeah? So why did they decide to kill Rosemary, the fandoms pet lesbian ship? The one thing that would get thousands of screeching people telling you to kill yourself if you dared ship rose or kanaya with anyone other then themselves? Why did they make so many characters act out of character, why kill so many? Why introduce so many uncomfortable kinks? Why did they make dog dick jade canon? And call it the trans rep? Aint these people supposed to be allies? Supposed to care about the LGBTHDTV+? Supposed to be part of the alphabet people themselves? How? Why? Spite? It certainly seems so. HS2 seems like it was written from a place of spite, just sheer derision for the material and the author. Maybe Hussie planned this, maybe he hated his own creation and the fans of it, maybe the team did this of their own volition? I dont know, I doubt we ever will. How can Roach write the story like this? I dont know too much about him. I dont have a reason to trust him, but I dont have a reason to distrust him either. But giving him the benefit of the doubt, Id say that he's passionate about Homestuck and wants to bring it to a good place, but how do you do that? How do you bring something from a place of sheer hatred into a place of passion? Without retcons or denouncing the things that came before? I have no doubt that he's under NDA's out the ass, probably has some "non slander" clauses in his contract as well, since you obviously just cant bad mouth the previous team, even if they deserve it. Still, I am just at a sheer loss of how the comic can be turned around with this development. I know Im going to be following it, is it possible for an IP to give you Stockholm Syndrome? Because no matter how bad Homestuck gets, I cant give it up. Theres still more blood and bodies to be found in this train wreck. I dunno, sorry for the rant, but you're really the only other blogger I feel I can vent shit about homestuck towards. Lots of the people I knew before dropped out, or I lost contact when my first blog got obliterated.

It's alright. I know what you mean and have similar feelings as well about all this. There are other fandoms and interests that have similar cases of going back to your abusive lover because you had liked what they were before. Just look at comic book fans, Disney fans, Pokemon fans, RWBY fans, etc. Homestuck's case is that the effort to contribute anything to it is just tiring. Other series have similar themes of nihilism and dark topics. But the fans there are able to make great fan works despite such depressing tone. Was it because the execution of those lets audiences have a choice to give a better outlook on things while Homestuck denies us this? Maybe. It's hard to pinpoint where had it all gone wrong or why it still continuing. Even if somehow Roach is able to salvage it, the damage has been done that it will take a long long time to really forgive and forget. Though with the downward spiral of this current generation, they'll probably be lucky to rope in new fans to enjoy that small high before they move on to something new and better.

I reread volume 1 of the reboot, and wow the art used to be so good. It was so unique and lively and expressive, and even looking at kneebys old art on their old olddd blog you could see the abstract influences in the artwork at the time, it was PEAK SOUL. Now the comic is so… empty feeling and sloppy. Like actual forced slop. It’s so disappointing. There isn’t even any violence anymore either, the hospital just feels like… a minor inconvenience at worst (with regards to the plot of the comic.)

Also. In volume 1 you could really see each staff member’s own art styles come through. Now I realize almost all of the old staff have left the comic or have been kicked from the team (my ex knew Jude, who inked + coloured, and apparently the whole behind the scenes drama was very toxic. I don’t really know much else though.)

Anyways I appreciate this blog because honestly the fanbase seems to always want to shut down reasonable criticism, and most of the current staff (especially chaosblast??) feel so hostile and unpleasant and cliquey. It’s disappointing.

With all the discussion of CRWBY/RT's apparent obsession with heroic sacrifices in RWBY as of late (and how poorly framed/managed they are), a part of me can't help but wonder if they're trying to chase the high of Epsilon/Church's sacrifice at the end of Red VS Blue Season 13. (Here's the scene in question for context: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5jM_mrOqec) Which I will admit, I found to be a pretty good scene as a sendoff to the character and at the time thought it was a nice way to end the show. Though RT ended up souring it by continuing on with season 15.

Thank you for the clip! I obviously have no idea what RT's motivations might be regarding the prevalence of these sacrifices - is it "chasing the high" or is RvB just early evidence of a writing trend? - but regardless, I like this a whole lot more than what RWBY's been giving us. I think this has a nice balance between the somber, emotional soundtrack and the funny one-liners that sound like they're core summaries of many character's personalities (unlike Weiss who suddenly becomes the comic relief). I like that Church (if I'm right about how is speaking there) doesn't actually end with "...I hate you all the least!" but has his actual goodbye speech once he's privately recording. I'm missing a ton of the nuances of his argument, but I like that it at least comes across as thought out: he's reassuring the AI voice that he's sure about this, he lays out how the sacrifice will hopefully help the others survive, he acknowledges that he's only here in the first place because of them, and there's some element of being "held back" that this sacrifice would do away with. Finally, I LOVE the self-referential acknowledgement that heroes don't get to see if their sacrifice was worth it (which is one of the problems with having Penny die and then chat with Winter, or Ruby drinking the tea and then waking up fine in the tree: suicide presented as just a journey where you don't really lose your connection to life), ending with the blank screen. We don't get to know if they win either! We are emotionally connected to Church in this moment, experiencing the story through him, and like him we don't get the reassurance of knowing whether the others survived! (Well, until you hit Season 14, apparently lol). You've just gotta have faith that the sacrifice meant something - "aint that a bitch."

And all this, I want to stress, is coming from someone who has NEVER watched more than like two episodes of RvB,which I've now totally forgotten. This scene is the entirety of my context... and I enjoyed it. Which I bring up largely because of the Moistcritikal drama. Personally, I take issue with the idea that someone's negative opinion of a clip is unreliable because they haven't seen the rest of the show. Does that mean then that my enjoyment is unreliable too? Most RWBY fans wouldn't say so because, after all, why would you get mad about others agreeing with you? They're only up in arms because he was critical of the show, rather than praising it, despite both situations stemming from the same ignorance. To say nothing of the fact that criticism is dismissed even when fans (like me) do keep up with the canon, a ton of the side material, are immersed in fandom, and are present for every major development. Doing everything "right," apparently, still doesn't earn you any trust in your opinion, so... why was all that necessary again?

I do believe that context (for obvious reasons) can severely skew an opinion one way or another. For example, I recently saw a new Magnus Archives listener saying that although they were loving the podcast, it really took them out of it to try and believe that all these people just happened to write down perfectly composed, poetic narratives about their experiences. I so wanted to say that there was a reason for this. That, eventually, the podcast would reveal a canonical explanation for how this occurs, taking what's originally a huge aspect of suspension of disbelief - arguably to the point of annoyance - and reframing it as a major worldbuilding detail that enhances the enjoyment instead of detracting from it. So there are obviously cases like that, just like I might enjoy the RvB scene more or less depending on my experience with the rest of the show... but that doesn't mean my enjoyment now is wrong? Nor is Moistcritikal's lack of enjoyment wrong. I find the 'Oh, you just don't understand and you're willingness to speak on the topic without every scrap of information is insulting' to be, itself, a pretty insulting response. This desire to invalidate someone's honest opinion of what they've been given is an issue on its own, but beyond that, a good show should be able to read well even without the rest of the context. Hasn't anyone ever analyzed a clip of a show in school that they enjoyed? Gotten excited over an ambiguous moment in a trailer? Decided to watch something based on just a video/GIF-set here on tumblr with no other info? Good media is good even when you don't fully know what's going on and bad media will read badly without the distraction of already being emotionally connected to the show. Toss in the fact that people can pick up a fair bit of context from the scenes themselves and that Moistcritikal had fans in the chat explaining the situation. People can still look at a clip and think the dialogue is badly written, or the acting shoddy, or the animation poor, or the whole conflict - once explanations are given - to be pretty badly conveyed. None of this takes an intimate knowledge of nine Volumes to develop an opinion on. Moistcritikal might miss character dynamic details like Yang standing in front of a passive Blake to 'protect' her from her little sister, but he can still respond to the general gist of the situation and the ways in which it was executed.
