For the most time, neither of you were aware of each other’s pasts; Fukuzawa intended to keep the details of your - at least professional - life private in front of the other members of the Detective Agency. Not that Ranpo wouldn’t catch on but oh well
Which didn’t bother you; it was your request after all.
It all started with very well-timed and very well worded questions aimed at you. Dazai had a way of picking the most vulnerable moment, the moment when you had your guard down both physically and mentally, even if just for a millisecond - he always nailed at piercing through your veil of protection and sting where it hurt the most.
Even if you didn’t, or more precisely, if you thought you didn’t answer, he got everything he needed from you.
At first, you couldn’t stand him for what it felt like him injecting the message ‘I know there’s more to you than you let on’ into you like poison, but the irritation you bore for him slowly transformed into an unusual, weird kind of trust between you two.
Almost unnoticeably, you both gave yourselves away to each other: you knew he wouldn’t act like this if he didn’t have something he wanted to hide himself. And Dazai knew you wouldn’t react the way you do if there wasn’t anything under that unbreakable wall you built around yourself.
It was an agreement you two made without words - a promise neither of you said aloud but decided to keep. You both knew but also didn’t, and didn’t intend on asking - it was something you both accepted about one another and treated it like a secret only the two of you know of. A secret that, like a magnetic force, pulled the two of you closer, unable to gravitate away, no matter how hard you would try to - although, neither of you wanted to resist.
Consequently, you found yourselves in each other’s company rather frequently - more and more often outside of work as well.
However, the ground of that was something neither of you dared to step on.
Until one incident, one stupid night where you weren’t careful enough. Your heart sank as soon as the words left your mouth and saw Dazai’s eyes darken and smile fade.
‘Sometimes a person’s death is inevitable for a greater goal - that’s how life is, you just… suck it up.’
When you said what you did, you immediately realized that what left your mouth, even if you didn’t intend them to do so, struck right in Dazai’s heart.
The man lowered his gaze, his thick, dark brown hair fell to the front, covering his face. Dazai shoved his hand in his pocket while you were inspecting him holding your breath, not knowing what to expect next.
Dazai pulled out a small box of matches from the pocket of his trench coat, and with a smooth movement, lit up a match; his dark brown eyes gazed upon the small, yet strong flame.
‘You see, Y/N’, he said in a calm voice, still fiddling with the match box, ‘Sucking it up a lot of times also means drinking poison.’ He raised up his head a little and turned his head to the side to make eye contact with you. ‘But I assume, in the military they serve one kind of antidote or another for that.’ He added, while a soft grin appeared on his face.
You expected yourself to be more surprised, to be stunned and shocked and the blood to be frozen in your veins; but instead, you felt like your heart was being ripped out. Out of all the stingy remarks of Dazai, this one hit you the hardest.
You didn’t know when did he figure out exactly that you were involved with the military, and you wondered how much he actually knows, but knowing that it’s Dazai, you assumed he knew everything.
‘Figured it out on your first week at work’, he said while stretching his arms up to the sky to move his stiff body around for a bit, ‘Not only military, but ability weapon development. Tough stuff.’
You let out a big sight from the bottom of your lungs. ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’
Dazai shrugged. ‘Would you have been able to handle it?’
You stared blankly in front of yourself, examining your hands in your lap, ‘Not sure if I can handle that now.’
Dazai, almost unnoticeably slipped closer to you, his thighs touching yours and wrapped his fingers around your hand, ‘You handled me pretty well so far. I think you will be alright. Think of it this way: many wouldn’t have been able to catch on based just on my questions I aimed at you. Even less would actually figure out that I have my own secrets too. And the fact that you were considerate and caring enough to not expose me shows that you know a lot more about emotions than you think you do.’
His words, his smile and that glimmer one again in his eyes were the only reassurance you needed in that moment. You slightly pressed his hand as a way to say thank you - you probably wouldn’t have been able to form the words right there and now, the lump in your throat and the tears of relief were creeping up on you too intensely for that.
Dazai didn’t let his eyes wander off of you. He caressed your palm with his thumb as a way of comforting you - just like your presence comforted him.
With his hand wrapped around yours, another unsaid promise formed between you two: you definitely want to let each other into your lives even more.

genres and bands i listen to and how i got into them: an entirely too long useless list i made instead of sleeping
celtic punk
shoutout to the genre ever? i grew up listening to celtic punk literally since i was born. my dad sucks but his music taste does not. this genre is 32% responsible for my leftist punk attitude, which is ironic if you know anything about my father.
- the dropkick murphys: first band i can ever remember hearing. as a toddler i called them “the bastards”. still a favourite forever and everrr. their newish album “this machine still kills fascists” fucks HARD. the band will forever be a formative reminder of my working class upbringing in a miners family
- the rumjacks: late nights and early mornings in my dads car introduced me to this band. i really will tell me ma when i get home and i wont feel guilty about it
- paddy and the rats: one of the only celtic punk bands i actually discovered on my own. in 2018 i went on a sailing ship for a week and that got me rlly into celtic punk again LMAO. this band is so fucking good
emo/pop punk

- my chemical romance: unironically i think i got into them through band memes
- fall out boy: literally just thru scrolling through youtube when i was 12

- toby foster: really one of my proper introductions to the genre and what ultimately led me to discover bands like ajj and pat the bunny. found him on youtube through his song tennessee. i was 13 i think?
- pat the bunny: after toby foster i was completely hooked on the genre and of course ended up listening to the king himself, pat the bunny. your heart is a muscle the size of your fist is such a comfort song to me even now. it sucks he no longer makes music but im very happy he got sober!
- schmekel: im trans and punk of course i listen to schmekel. fantastic trans and jewish band that helped me a lot with my transness as a young teen
- mal blum: im counting his music as folk punkish, sue me. no idea how i got into them either. their song new years eve is the song i listen to on repeat every single new years eve, and i have yet to change this tradition. Help Me.
- the front bottoms: I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS. THEIR EARLIER ALBUMS ARE FOLK PUNK AS HELL. genuinely my favourite band ever. i can’t remember how i got into them but is how i ended up friends with @starcam413 (hi jon!)

- new order: one of my favourite bands right now. like most things for the last three years of my life, i got into this band because of a comic book. the tv adaption of paper girls features two new order songs and it got me absolutely hooked on this band.

i think tsukasa’s situation is interesting because it goes against everything that people want to believe about families. their story is so important because good parents can still hurt their kids. you can’t just write off every parent who makes a mistake or is put into a tough spot as abusive. people are complex, situations are nuanced, and even in a happy family there ARE problems. i’m no expert on wxs, much less tsukasa, but even i know the tenmas all love each other so very much.
also side note: i like how they show both tsukasa and sakis perspective of her time in hospital as well. stories tend to focus on just the sibling of the sick kid in a pretty ableist way. but tsukasa never talks about how hard it is on him to have an ill sister—he’s actually kind of allergic to complaining about anything. it’s just different from how narratives usually tackle this issue and i appreciate it
YES OH MY GOD YES. this. i absolutely don’t think his parents ever had bad intentions and intentionally neglected him like that but it doesn’t change the fact it’s definitely Not Great to be leaving a kid alone so often. sucks his parents never show up in the story much cause i rlly love how much the tenmas all love and care abt each other and i’d love to see them. but it’s fair though cause like. tsukasa’s childhood isn’t some major issue he’s dealing with that they need to bring up like some other characters. i do kinda wish they came up a bit more i wanna see them.

they do it as a joke but also they’re super drunk and just like the karaoke everyone encourages them bcs it’s good content like ilies vlogs the whole thing but the footage is subpar and they all believe that thing that’s like it’s not actually a real wedding
except it is and they find out after abu dhabi and laugh about and then a few hrs later yuki has pierre cornered somewhere and says something nonchalantly about annulment and pierre avoids him for the whole winter break
it’s easier, if he avoids him, to pretend yuki really wanted to marry him. or that he doesn’t exist, whichever is less painful at any given moment in time.
AND IT SUCKS ESPECIALLY bcs hed convinced yuki to move TO milan, FINALLY. and alpine keeps trying to get him to move closer to their HQ and he keeps saying no and they keep saying at least france and he keeps saying no…. but…
anyways it’s stupid of him to think he can avoid this and his friends tell him so but he can’t help it he just keeps thinking if he doesn’t see yuki then yuki can’t tell him he doesn’t actually want him in any ways that’s emotionally real and he just. he can’t. not now.
and he can’t avoid yuki forever because they’re best friends and legally married in the united states and live in the same city that’s only so big so running into each other is inevitable
