hi hi hi!!! so i just recently hit 800 n i was going to save this for my 1k celebration, but genuinely i am just full of so much love for everyone that i couldn’t hold myself back from doing this so !!!! appreciation post for mutuals!!! n this is absolutely wild to me, bc ive been on tumblr for over 4 years now, n remade this blog at the end of september to both restart and because i was getting super into mcyt n wanted a blog to focus on that, and the fact that ive grown this much since then is absolutely insane to me!!!

omg how long ago did you ask me this 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Ummm I definitely think there are a billion better gifmakers than me on here whose tutorials and sharpening settings are infinitely better than mine tbh and I think you're much better off asking/looking for them. It's nearing midnight here so I'm not going to answer this now, but tomorrow in the afternoon or something I'll edit this post with a full on tutorial of how I sharpen etc., alright?

okay i couldnt decide on just two gifs to post, so this is really just gonna be a giant journey through all my gifmaking progress up to this point. for your sake, i have hid it under the read more.

if you want the tl;dr version, it can basically be summed up in that i went from this:

here is one of the first gifs i ever made:

back in 2016-2017 i used an app called gif toaster on my ipad to make super simple basic gifs from videos that i downloaded from youtube, with another ipad app that is not available anymore. this gif is important bc girl meets world (and specifically rilaya) is what made me want to gif in the first place! i was so inspired by all the beautiful, deep, creative edits made by the gmw fandom and wanted to make cool stuff of my own. i definitely had a phase where i edited the lyrics to girls like girls onto every wlw pairing i ever shipped.

next theres this one:

which is a sample from probably the worst gifset i have ever created. i dont delete anything ever, so if you go far enough back in my tag, its still there. i used to edit gifs frame by frame, with like 4 different apps/websites. that clover? i painstakingly added it in the same spot over and over to each individual frame!

and here’s the last pre-photoshop example i will include:

when i learned how to use overlays on lunapic and had a very prolific text post meme phase, which i mostly put to work on my andi mack sideblog. despite the absolutely awful quality, this gifset has more notes than most of the sets ive posted. descendants 2 was so fun to post about.

i pretty much took a year off from tumblr in 2018, stopped creating stuff for the most part, became disconnected from lots of my old online friends. BUT THEN a bitch came back better than ever and finally took the steps to start learning photoshop in the summer of 2019! here are some samples of things i made when i had just barely learned to use photoshop:

i started off with a gifset of my favorite band, bc ultimately my motiviation for making gifs always has and always will be to preserve the things i love the most. a few things to note here: i think i pretty much only added a brightness layer to this (bc i didnt know how to color yet), i hadnt heard of optimal dimensions so i didnt bother resizing this, and the image is vertically squished, which i didnt know how to fix at the time. i remember that it was a huge accomplishment for me to learn how to add text.

next we have this one:

where i started learning how to use brushes. i was very focused on the umbrella academy when i first started using photoshop, and i was determined to teach myself to add pretty colors to things!

but THIS is where i changed the game:

THIS is where it really started, folks! i had seen enough coloring tutorials to learn how to use selective color layers. and the first thing i did with them was oversaturate my cyans into oblivion. this was the best gif in the set, and everyone’s skin was super yellow toned in all the others.

from there i became more adventurous:

this sally gif marks a point in time where i started getting comfortable with my position as a gifmaker. i started to develop my coloring own style. but funnily enough, at this point, i still didnt know how to sharpen yet! i was still editing in frames instead of timeline, and i couldnt figure out what the people in tutorials were talking about when they mentioned timeline stuff.

in december i posted a hairspray gifset that i would define as the moment i learned and started mastering the vibrant coloring that i still do to this day:

after this i arrived at what i consider to be my current style in terms of coloring and creativity.

so there you have it! i went from struggling and being very hard on myself for not having edits that i thought were as good as other people’s, to really finding my style and voice as a gifmaker. im so proud of how far ive come and everything im able to make and do now! if you are someone who is just starting out as a gifmaker, my advice to you is to not worry if what youre making isnt perfect! it takes a lot of work and practice to get to the place you wanna be, but definitely enjoy the journey, read lots of tutorials, and always try to keep learning!

i started off making gifs in photoshop cs6 (and still use this program today). i didn’t know much about sharpening, coloring, or how to effectively split up a scene into meaningful gifs, as seen by the oversaturation and fuzziness of the minas tirith gif i made in 2018 below.

eventually i got better at sharpening and choosing what snapshots to gif. compare this monochrome darth maul gif from 2019 to this colorful one from several weeks ago—that’s improvement!

here is my most recent gif, made and posted earlier today. much better than that minas tirith from two years ago!

i know that i still have a long ways to go, and i don’t gif as consistently as i could be, but i really enjoy the creative process. my main goal right now is getting better at coloring!

how do you make dnps lips so rosy in your gifs? its beautiful

it’s selective colour! under the cut i will introduce how i use selective colour (and vibrance) to make rosy skin tone/lip colour, plus a very straightforward alternative method (that isnt applicable to all gifs).

[to follow this u should have basic knowledge in how to make gifs and colour them]

this is a typical example of my dapg gifs. the colouring looks like this:

i add quite a few vibrance layers as well as playing with selective colour. for most gifs, i use 3 vibrance layers at least 2 selective colour layers. the sections that affect skin tones and lip colours the most are red and magentas

1) this is what my gifs would have looked like without adding vibrance & adjusting the skin and lip colours in selective colour:

2a) in selective colour, the sections that affect skin tones and lip colours the most are red and magentas. this is my settings on the layer selective colour 1 and 2 respectively:

[reds] + yellow for a more natural skin tone, and - cyan to add a bit red to their face. if u - black here, the overall skin tone will be brightened, but i basically dont do it for this gif because it will also wash out phil’s red tee. i usually - black when none of them are wearing red.

[magentas] !!!!the exciting part!!!! - cyan and + magentas for rosy lips!!!! (i feel this sentence plays at least 50% of the importance in this very long answer but pls bear with me) this step makes their lips pop, however sometimes magentas also affect some pixely chunks in the background as well as some random parts on their skin. if u - cyan and + magenta too much it will look like they have skin rashes (esp phil, as he has a pink skin tone; phil is also the one that’s harder to get rosy lips bc he has paler lips. but try ur best), so be careful. other than that, the colour would probs turn out too hot pinkish for my liking, so i almost always do + yellow (even +100 quite often) for a more coral/peach/salmon-y colour.

2b) with only enhancing selective colours, the difference isn’t quite obvious, thus i up the vibrance a lot to enhance the colourfulness (vibrance +100 on the first layer, then +30~50 on the second and third. here on this gif i went for +100, +38, +38 respectively). i know a lot of people dont like using vibrance for some reason but this probs plays a key part in my colourings a lot of the times:

3) with both upped vibrance and enhanced reds & magentas in selective colour, my gifs look like this:

*i have to admit that i sometimes go overboard with the reds (i am now a bit iffy about this specific gif but. yolo) bc im impulsive like that. if u like the wip’s or even ‘before’ better than what it turned out in the end it’s valid and this is just a demonstration. gifmaking is all about ur personal preference!

if a) the above method doesn’t work due to the video quality, b) ur bored enough and c) the lips don’t move too much in the gif, u can try a different method (that i dont really use in gifmaking lol i’ve used it once for the pinof 1 gif here but normally i just do this in edits rather than gifs): just draw on ur gifs.

first, create a new layer above all the screencaps and use a soft brush to paint the lip area with red (u can even create a second layer that has the whole face or cheeks painted). it will look ridiculous but u just gotta change the layer to a soft light mode and a lower opacity. an example:

of course u could pick a different colour like pink, orange, even a different shade of red, etc. or use other blending modes such as overlay. just try and see what u like!

7. Who are your top 3 gif makers

ohmans thats hard khfdsa. i actually am big fans of a lot of gifmakers out there that i dont follow but i see their stuff all the time in the tags & rb from them etc etc. but like i do follow a lot of folks who’s stuff i rlly enjoy and are folks that tend to inspire me. its a bit unfair to list just three so fkjsdha uhh @aartyom @eurodynamic @onewingedangels @preciousgyro @entreri @marogarreh @thequantumranger @trident

9. What/who inspired you to start making gifs

i dont fully remember, i think a mix of just fandom stuff w/ friends & rp blogs. i do remember it was a hellacious journey until i could figure it out and since then i just have tried to keep improving or learning new things etc etc.

17. 10 sets, 8 sets, 6 sets? How many gifs to you prefer in a set

this is VERY dependent on the set im making at the time. i try to avoid like sets with a lot of images bc i get very tired with the task. but some stuff like i try to do between 2-5 so it looks nice in a post.

15. Have you ever had gifs stolen and reposted

constantly. usually its my avan gifs or star trek gifs. which is like the major reason i dont do them anymore or do a lot of non-video game slash anime sets. i tend to confront the person or ask them to take it down & it goes as well as you expect half the time: not the best. the worst time was a rp blog stealing all my avan gifs, not aware i was in the same rp circles so like tons of mutuals( most shared between the two of us ) notified me & they blocked me on said blog so i had to message them from my personal + other blogs i had at the time as well as said mutuals spoke with them as well before they took them down. it was a very frustrating day.

20. Mac or PC

i have experience with both mac & pc, however my default is my pc which is built for gaming. i’ve had mac laptops in the past via my older sister who would give me her school handmedowns. as far as specifically creating art gifs what have you, i have no preference between the two.

26. How many un posted sets are in your drafts right now

sO I KNOW A LOT OF PPL DO THAT WHERE THEY MAKE STUFF AND SAVE IT IN DRAFTS BUT IM DKSJHA i just i dont have the like mental fortitude to make something and not post it soon after. back when i was doing rp stuff & writing i used my drafts very heavily for wips & i sorta do that w/ gifsets in a way. as i make them i have a opened draft to upload each one to see how they look on tumblr, if they upload correctly, & to check coloring between my main monitor secondary monitor & phone as well so i make sure colors are good theres no washes etc. so usually if there is something in the drafts im currently working on it or its about to be posted so there are zero things in my drafts other than this ask kfsha

40. Why do you make gifs

good question. no clue. fkjhdsa but its fun & i enjoy it. its also just fun to share my interests in a way that can be shared by other people in reblogs etc. reading the tags of my sets & seeing ppls reactions or just opinions or whatever is just it rlly makes it. I Make Gifs For The People.

45. Ever gotten hate over a set

i’ve had ppl disrespect me bc of a gifset but ive never gotten hate persay. i do get a lot of bitchy people upset about my “do not repost or remove caption.” that i add to my posts which like i tend to ignore. realistically i cant stop ppl from doing such but it has helped so i keep doing it. usually i get a comment on said set they reblogged that day or in the tag but ive gotten 1 ask once about it & it was p funny. but proper hate with a valid reason ? nah.

49. How much would you say you’ve improved since you first started giffing

oH SO MUCH LOL. from coloring, to timing of the frames, to composition, to typography, to quality. the more i make the better i get. && there are things i want to redo to see how much i’ve improved. im not using the best tools to make these, but i’ve seen my improvement i’ve seen how much better i am & it’s rlly nice to be able to visually see your growth.

im not great at making gifs but this is what i do:

1) i downloaded photoshop cs2 bc it was free as well as km player

2) i download a video from youtube using clip converter (bc i dont understand torrents and you need a vpn to use them)

3) i make a gif folder and then i make a folder for each specific scene w/in the gif folder

4) i open km player and open a video in it and then if you right click on the video there should be a CAPTURE option and when you hover over that more options should appear and you want to click “frame:extract”

6) okay when you click it should open up a window and at the top it should say “extract to:” and this is where you use the folders you created earlier. so for example: if i was creating a gif of mia and seb then i would want to click on the folder called m&s1. this isn’t necessary but it allows you to gif more easily like WAY more easily.

7) on this same window there should be an option that say FRAMES TO EXTRACT. you can set this to whatever you prefer, i do 35 frames per second but i know gifmakers who have a much higher/lower rate, it rlly depends on preference.

8) keep the window open and when the section of the video you want to gif comes up press the start button and then the stop button when it’s over.

9) now open photoshop. bc mine is faulty i have to go to “image ready” first which can be found in photoshop by pressing file then image ready.

10) in image ready press file then import then “folders as frames”

11)now that ive got the files i go BACK to photoshop by pressing file then “edit in photoshop”

12) okay now there should be a bar in photoshop that has your video in frames and you should the frames you dont want. you can select all the frames by clicking the first one then hold down shift as you press the last frame.

13) okay now you want to set the speed which you do by righting clicking on the highlighted frames by the part where it says 0 sec. this should open a tab where you can choose the speed usually i set mine to .07 or .05

14. usually for coloring i just use a psd

15. then when you have the coloring and dimesions and everything you want you’ll want to save by going to file then save for web then click save and give it whatever title you want and you’re done!

anyway things that were amazing about 2x11

VISUALLY what a lovely episode!!!! that awful green colour grading from 2a seems to be gone (or mostly gone) and yeah, the lighting is still dark, but i feel like they’ve finally struck the appropriate balance between season “looks like a commercial’ one and season “who the fuck even is in this scene?” 2a lol. like if you look at the rooftop scene from 2x05 compared to 2x11, it’s night and day.

speaking of visual effects, did anyone else love love love the way the end part of the episode looked, when azazel was fuckin screaming into everyone’s ears or whatever? the pentagram and everything and then like the ash and i really liked the effect where azazel evaporated into bats or what fuckin ever

GOLDEN EYES JACE HOW COOL IS THIS plus basically that whole badass leap and sword thing whatever you wanna call it i just loved that whole thing it’s like this really really cool mythology coming to life and i really liked the aesthetic of it all with the glowing runes and eyes

azazel recognizing magnus was my favourite thing in the entire world tbh like ohhh man i really hope they go down this route when they’re exploring magnus’s backstory and the way alec in the background just kind of looks between them.....is there anything better than this

starting from the top, i really love the institute courtyard set! i don’t think we’ve seen it before? but anyway it was really nice and it set a really cool atmosphere for both the demon summoning scene and the parabatai sparring scene and i really hope we see more of it

and uhhh speaking of the parabatai sparring scene.... i mean.....is there anything better than this just tbh

like i said before i love the set and the atmosphere of it i thought it was super cool and it wasn’t even that poorly lit for being at night lol and the music was nice! i love the kind of electro techno what fuckin ever im too old for this stuff they play during the sparring scenes

and the fight choreography this season has been out!!!! of this!!! world!!!! personally i loved the sword/axe fighting they did but the hand to hand was just as fun and more cute and almost like play fighting between brothers and i just loved it

the teasing!! the smiles!! just a really good lighthearted scene that didn’t feel extraneous either

okay hate climon if you will but that scene was really pretty visually

the attempted hug between jace and simon had me in stitches dom and alberto are so perfect at their dynamic whether you ship it or not it’s fantastic

im glad we’re seeing a more increased presence of the clave because it’s only appropriate and it rounds out the world better and is hopefully going to make certain things implied about the clave more explicit

plus......herondale reveal.......soon hopefully lol

ive seen that restaurant multiple times in person that azazel decimated and i think that’s a cool fun fact irrelevant to everyone but me

I LOVED THE SCENE between alec and izzy....like i did not like the yin fen plot but it seems like we’re wrapping that up thank god...and it was just so damn sweet!!!! alec is so sweet and nurturing and caring isn’t he :)))))

oh lord that sweet sad little smile that they exchanged when he said “they all think you have the flu” kill me now that was perfect

matt and em have such a damn perfect dynamic and chemistry it kills me every single time and em was also fantastic in all of the withdrawal scenes

when she’s trying to put her makeup on is especially touching and i think it’s as good a character moment for izzy as we’ve gotten recently and i really liked it

motherfuckin luke alpha garroway that was so badass and i loved every damn second of it (plus idk about you but that “detective garroway” was nice)

luke being 100% done with ollie was hilarious and i loved it

his excuse about taking notes on his phone was great too i just loved that whole scene tbh

loved the moments between simon and maia!! i’m so glad they’re not trying to put any unnecessary drama between them and just having them move on and stay friendly with each other!!

magnus’s outfit basically saved my life so there’s that

i want his coat and someone in that costume department deserves literal emmys

plus whenever magnus just....knows everything....all the time...... i love it

love the boyfriends working together!! solving problems!! helping each other out like real people do and i also really liked the aesthetic of the scene with that garbage can fire lighting it up....probably not gonna be fun as a gifmaker but it looked cool as hell (esp with that coat)

i actually loved the scene between the two of them right after, when clary is a little bit upset and tells jace to “feel something” i feel like it’s really indicative of the different ways they look at the world and themselves and yes i enjoyed it

cute bonding moment between luke and maia!!! im really glad that they’re acknowledging the problems while not ruining their relationship, because i love it a lot and it just really shows how much trust maia has in luke and vice versa

the scene........with.............jace and alec on the rooftop..........is there anything better than this......i just love how it was completely wordless and yet you understood the emotions perfectly and the little pat alec does on jace’s head fuck me up man

more scenes like this please where emotions aren’t thrown in our face through over-expressive dialogue and the actors are allowed to act because holy shit it was perfect

speaking of which, SUBTLETY!! with ollie being potentially ??? who knows with that pic she took of luke and maia, plus the tiny little hints (i mean we all know who he is but if we didn’t) about sebastian (also kudos to will tudor for a fantastic first episode!!) like the way he talks about jocelyn which is some pretty sick dramatic irony for us at this point, and the weird hand burn thing he was doing......i really liked it and i think will is gonna be amazing and i’m excited to see what’s next

like it’s not punching us in the face with information and i really appreciate that

alec and izzy’s phone call!!! it’s so cute and im so glad they’re handling their conflicts in character because they just care and love each other so so so so so much and you can see that so clearly and i love it

though im not a fan of the trope in this context, i cannot fucking wait to see harry shum fuckin jr killing the game next episode because he will and it will be phenomenal tbqh

I try to always ask people if my graphics look good to them and if I get a few no’s, I try to make it more appealing to them as well?? but it gets messy because I can't appeal to everyone hhh and!! its very time consuming, people assume you just slap a bunch of shit on but it is not really like that

6. I don't really have a favourite graphic maker??? I just draw a bunch of inspiration from different ones daily and from regular things I see in magazines, books etc. there are so many different types of graphic makers in general as well?? it makes it hard to choose a favourite kdfjks

22. my biggest improvement?? mmm... my colour-matching?? I know which colours fit more together now hhh,,, I'm also getting way better at filling up my graphics,, more than leaving them blank and bare?? I know that some people prefer the cleanliness of it all, I always think it can be a little more “extra” (but not too much)

37. a must... well i think its important to have a main focus?? like the point of the whole graphic,, if you're making a graphic of ateez?? you gotta include them at least?? have their name in their graphic?? have something that is recognizable to them/atinys?? I've seen way too many graphics where you really can't see the main focus of a graphic hhh and when making a set of graphics you should always make them match each other, whether it be colours, fonts, pngs, etc. it looks cleaner!!send me graphic asks!!
