Why you (probably) didn't like Spider from Avatar TWOW

Social media is ruining the film industry in so many ways I couldn't begin to cover them all. I don't think this is a profound statement, but I want to explore my point in the context of Avatar The Way of Water, specifically with the character, Spider.

A few things that is becoming more apparent, due to social media:

1) General audiences can't tolerate cliff-hangers anymore. They're referred to as "plot holes" now. (Yes, I know lots of movies include actual plot holes, but actual cliff-hangers are getting called plot holes when they're two different things) (and sometimes, the writer of a story will specifically include unanswered questions, because our imaginations can be more intriguing and allows us to play "detective" and discuss, unanswered questions are not inherently bad, sometimes they're quite interesting). This leads to people wanting answers now, right now. We have a question, we search it and can get an answer basically immediately. When we can't find the answer immediately, we get upset.

2) Cancel Culture. - need I say more? (no, but I will anyway). This leads to one giant problem within the context of how social media is changing the film industry. People are actively trying to "cancel" characters, fictional characters or the authors of those characters for not aligning themselves as either a "good" or a "bad" character. Cancel culture is actively morphing our brains to think that if you make a mistake, you can never come back from it. That if you did something wrong, you are "toxic" and irredeemable. I can rant all day about cancel culture, but for now, just think about how it is shaping our tolerance of people. (Also, keep in mind that within the world of literature, film, art, etc. this topic comes up all the time about "morally grey characters" and is never something that is condemned, the only time this is a problem is when it makes its way onto social media sites)

So looking at these two points, we see that audiences don't like unanswered questions and they don't like morally grey characters.

I think Spider from Avatar TWOW is the most perfect example of a morally grey character out of the entire series. At least up to this point.

Everyone, even in the first movie ranges somewhere from either "Good" or "Bad" but, none of them are directly in the middle. I could argue that Mo'at, Norm, Neytiri, and Max are very good. Their intentions are always to be good. Quaritch and Selfridge are very bad. Their intentions are always to be bad. Jake is the most "grey" of all the characters in the original because of his internal conflict between wanting to fit in with the military again by spying on the Na'vi and slowly realizing he loves Pandora and the people and wants to help them. Even though he actively tries to help Quaritch in the beginning, I'd argue that his intentions are always "alright" I don't think he is ever on the "bad" side of the spectrum, although he starts off close to it, by the end, he solidifies himself as "good".

Then we have Spider.

My boy Spider is at the butt of everyone's jokes, all over TikTok and Instagram. The comments section is full of people just absolutely bashing him, hating him, making fun of him calling him a "Tarzan wannabe" and saying that he probably "sheds and smells like a wet dog". People have no sympathy for him, even some of those comments saying how they'll "never forgive him" or simply "hate him".

:Spoilers:

Spider is introduced as this lone human kid on Pandora, who hangs out with Jake and Neytiri's kids and has grown up with them. However, Neytiri has never accepted him. (A lot of people are mad at her about this because they say that he's just like Jake, which I would argue is not entirely correct because Neytiri was going to kill Jake (because she hates and distrusts humans) but Eywa chooses him for some reason and she's compelled to save him).

Spider is absolutely enthralled with the Na'vi culture. He speaks the language perfectly and paints himself with blue stripes. He genuinely loves and cares for the Na'vi despite being human.

Then, he gets captured and meets his dad, Quaritch. While it isn't entirely Quaritch, it is kind of his dad and he only agrees to leave with them on their mission because he doesn't want to be actively tortured by the scientists anymore. (I think that decision is understandable). Then, he gets to be the cultural ambassador of the Na'vi, translator, teacher, and guide as he spends more and more time with the military avatars and gets to be important to them. Then when all hell breaks loose, and he has to translate to a Metkayina village asking for Jake, he is visibly scared and desperately trying to help them and begs for Quaritch to stop terrorizing them. Then they burn down the village and take Spider with them, against his will.

Later, he gets the chance to fight and help in the end battle and he helps to wreck the ship, runs away like twice (?) before being successful thanks to Neteyam. Then is used as a pawn by Neytiri who threatens to kill him if Quaritch doesn't release Kiri. (This whole time, Spider is begging Quaritch to let Kiri go and to not hurt her).

But, for many viewers the nail in the coffin was when he saves Quaritch from drowning. He has seen the destruction caused by Quaritch, even if he doesn't know Quaritch's full history, he knows he burned down villages, staged the killing of a Tulkun, was willing to kill Lo'ak, Tuk, and Kiri all in an effort to hunt down and kill Jake.

But, I think the key moment was during the stand-off between Quaritch and Neytiri. For the first time in Spider's entire life (keep in mind he's like 16), an adult (a parental figure) stood up for him and showed genuine concern for him. Whether you like it or not, Neytiri has never liked him and Jake has never went out of his way to make him feel welcome. But now, in the heat of the moment, Quaritch, this big bad military man, stops what he's doing for fear of Spider's well-being.

Between the wreckage, Spider and Lo'ak were trying to find Jake. But, Spider happens upon Quaritch, who is at the edge of death. Then this, sixteen-year-old kid, sees this man just went out of his way to save Spider's life a few minutes before and now this man is about to die. Spider had to make a split-second decision and he made it. He saved Quaritch from drowning, then immediately leaves him and joins the Sully's.

I think Spider's intentions change from "I love the Na'vi, I basically am Na'vi" to "This father figure isn't too bad" to "I get to be helpful and important to someone" "oh no, what are you doing?" to "you saved my life, I'll save yours"

I CANNOT, overstate how much I love morally grey characters, they are so much fun to analyze and there's nothing worse than a plain "static" character. Give me a dynamic character with conflicting motivations. The reason I think Jake never went into the "bad" intentions side was because he genuinely was blind to the Na'vi at the beginning, but the more he learns, the more his actions reflect the newfound love and respect. Whereas Spider knows all about the Na'vi, and he loves and looks up to them, he was basically raised by the Sully family. I'm sure he is smart enough to understand that the humans and military avatars are "bad" with bad intentions. So when he starts to give into that side those intentions start to shift and his character becomes more and more grey.

And people on social media simply cannot compute. Cancel him! people cry. Screw him! He's the worst character ever! I can smell him through the screen!

People don't like that he did some bad things so the masses cry out, "bad! Bad! He's a bad character"

I'm not saying that I absolutely loved him, but I did like his character and I think he'll play a bigger role in the next film. He's a conflicted 16 year old, dynamic, character. I'm excited to see where his character goes from here.

But please, stop letting social media trick you into thinking that people are "good" or "bad". Not a single person on this planet can be accurately described as simply "good" or "bad". People are dynamic.

And for the love of everything, just because you don't have all the answers handed to you on a little silver plate, doesn't mean that the story had plot holes and is objectively bad. Unanswered questions and cliff-hangers can be very effective if done well.

People are fighting to not have to think on their own and form their own thoughts and opinions, because what if my opinion isn't a popular one or is the wrong one????

We don't know what is going to happen with Spider, but now, we can theorize and discuss until the next film comes out.

Anyways, I won't tolerate Spider slander anymore unless you can formulate an actual genuine reason to not like him besides, "he's bad", "he sucks", or "I bet he stinks".

i do! i'm not so great at it with oneshots but with multichapters my practice is to reply to all the previous chapter's comments right before i post the next one. it keeps me disciplined about it, since i think it's important to engage with and thank my readers.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

probably the year of what now... i was going for hopeful melancholy but let's be honest. i cried writing it

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

i mean i don't really do unqualified happy endings lmao there's always something bittersweet or complicated about it. maybe love is a battle i can win? since i finished writing it on christmas eve and something about the festive spirit must have suffused my attitude.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

thankfully not, or if i have it wasn't consequential enough to recall it.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

not really, no. i'm more of a fade-to-black kind of gal. i have the utmost respect for those who do write it, since i find it difficult and ultimately would rather focus my energy on other parts of my writing.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

not really, no. they can be fun but it's difficult to find a scenario that feels plausible (as someone obsessed with that sort of thing lmao). i do have a hankering to somehow connect downton abbey and peaky blinders together, since they occur in exactly the same period from very different societal perspectives. i have no idea how, however. the casual viewer's choice would be putting mary and tommy together, but mary's far too much of a snob, and sybil too much of an idealist. thomas, maybe? hmm now i'm thinking about it maybe i'll do it and write something gen.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not to my knowledge. i have had edits stolen and put on tiktok, though, which was enraging.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

i have! no forest, no trees was translated into russian, and the first few chapters of the lathe have been translated into german.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

i have not. i don't think i'm a collaborative enough person for that lmao

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

i'm not sure i have one! definitely have some i prefer to write but i like them all for different reasons, and i also err on the side of character work rather than straightforward fandom-style shipping.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

there's a elrond & thranduil wip sitting in my google docs waiting for its final few sections. i keep going back to it and rereading it and then never adding anything else, though it really does need those extra sections to be fit for uploading. there's also private eyes, which i did enjoy writing, but i think my style and interests have evolved somewhat beyond it now. i'm also somewhat working on a thoroughbred racing tommyalfie au set in the 1970s, but i fear my own lack of knowledge about the industry will prevent me ever being quite happy enough with it to post.

16. What are your writing strengths?

dialogue. i love me some dialogue. i also love doing research and i think i'm good at utilising that research in a thematically effective way.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

i make things way longer than they need to be lol. i'm also trying to get away from over-explaining in an internal monologue and instead trying to trust the reader and the writing to speak for itself.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

i can't say i've ever really had an opinion on this. i probably wouldn't use another language for pivotal dialogue, even if it's footnoted, since it can take a non-speaking reader out of the flow of the scene, but overall i don't really mind and sometimes it can be effective.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

probably something like marvel or once upon a time back on ff.net. those were most certainly NOT the days.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

hmmm definite recency bias coming in here but it's got to be either the lathe or better by you, better than me. honourable mention (only because it's so much shorter) to vagues.

Yeah I agree, I'm not a trans men of color but I also wish I got to hear more about their specific experience. Even with the very limited focus trans men and transmasc people get, it always seems to revolve around a very specific kind of trans men and transmascs.

It's a small sample but, for example, I've seen trans men of color on TikTok get a lot more hate and claims of being misogynistic than the average white trans man on that app.

Same thing with fat trans men, especially if they also don't fit the beauty standard. Transphobes think trans men and transmascs being ugly is just a punishment for going on T, so they're extra elated when someone has a receding hairline, fat rolls or doesn't look like a supermodel in general.

Meanwhile, white skinny trans men's comment sections usually have people compliment their looks (which I also don't especially like because it's usually in the really backhanded way cis people compliment us, but it's better than fighting against the average TERF) and transphobes don't feel as encouraged to post hate under those videos because they live off of a mob mentality that crumbles when they feel the crowd is against them.

It's already really frustrating to be a white trans man and feel like you have no direct line of contact with cis people, like we're trapped in a box in the middle of the ocean, so I can't even imagine how frustrating it would be to be part of an even smaller subgroup that often doesn't even get visibility from the white side of the community.

"The Blaire White Effect"

So, there's this girl I've seen on TikTok lately, Kelly Cadigan, who does a series of "Day [x] of Being on the Right" videos, and I can't stand seeing her full videos since her content is harmful. I'm glad people are starting to call her out for it. A lot of reaction videos from other trans people calling her out are extremely helpful. So, I'm going to talk about those.

But there's one of them that I want to focus on for now (click here to watch it yourself). It's one from a fellow trans woman, saying how it seems Kelly is experiencing a lot of internalized transphobia - just like Blaire White - because of all the recent laws passed, especially in her state, Florida. They're going to affect Kelly, too. Someone had mentioned in the comments, "The Blaire White effect is real."

So, with that being said, what is it and how does it affect others? I'm gonna break it down for you.

Internalized Transphobia & "Pick Me" Behavior

When something is internalized, it's loathing yourself for something that's a part of who you are. Things like internalized homophobia and transphobia are unfortunately common in the LGBT+ community because it's a minority that gets spat on constantly, which causes this self-hatred to envelop you.

Blaire White is known for being a "Pick Me" amongst the trans community. She wants that acceptance from cisgender people as being the "good" and "normal" trans person in the community. And to gain that acceptance, she'll say harmful things about other trans people who she doesn't deem as acceptable, and she'll act unbothered by conservatives' horrid opinions about trans people. It's as if she's trying to be cis, which unfortunately isn't a thing trans people can identify as. We're labeled as trans for a reason - we don't identify with our assigned gender at birth, and we can't help that. Cis people do.

It's sad to see this because it's obvious Blaire acts this way because of her own internalized transphobia. She wants to be accepted and fit in with "normal" people who aren't trans.

Kelly Cadigan mirrors this very behavior in her videos, and it's become really prominent lately. All she posts now are videos of her spewing this horrible trans rhetoric, trying to side with the right. And as I had mentioned before, notice how this "Day [x] of Being on the Right" series with her exhibiting this Blaire White type of behavior just happened to come out right after the latest anti-trans laws were passed. Doesn't seem like a coincidence. Kelly most likely wants to steer away from any hatred and being "very obviously trans" because of this, and to do so, she's spitting on the trans community and catering to conservatives to gain their acceptance.

I've also seen this behavior from Blaire White's trans guyfriend, Kalvin Garrah. Before realizing I myself am trans, I watched some of Kalvin's videos (but quickly realized they're harmful). And, I remember his other trans friend, Storm Ryan, being in a lot of his videos where they make fun of "weird" trans people, a good portion of them including nonbinary folks (like Blaire White's reaction videos which I'll go into detail about in the next section).

However, the reason I mention Ryan is because he was able to realize this toxic behavior in Kalvin and how he himself added to this bad behavior. He made a surprisingly good serious apology video, expressing his realization that this is wrong and making it known he's no longer friends with Kalvin. In fact, his new best friend is Brennan Beckwith who's a wonderful trans advocate and individual on the nonbinary spec, who he and Kalvin once made fun of. TLDR: it is possible to change this sort of mentality. Storm Ryan proved that.

Making Fun of the "Weird" Trans People & Not Believing Nonbinary People Exist

A very common type of reaction video we see is trans people who don't fit societal norms - nor Blaire White's version of "normal" - being made fun of. You'll notice she watches a lot of trans people who have their own specific views on gender and how they identify (including a lot of people on the nonbinary spec), and trans people who dress/express themselves alternatively.

Blaire views these kinds of people as insane and absurd, and goes out of her way to make fun of them by making reaction videos to their content. It's very hurtful towards a good portion of the trans community, seeing as how she's directly bullying them, which promotes others to go bully these people, too, causing these people to potentially experience severe amounts of invalidation and harm.

Blaire dresses in the very typical feminine fashion and passes well enough for some of her own audience to not even realize she's trans. Any trans woman who doesn't try to look feminine enough and/or doesn't pass doesn't fit her standard. I've noticed she doesn't even see Dylan Mulvaney as a fellow trans woman despite that she dresses femininely and has had FFS, just because she doesn't pass well enough (by her standards) and tends to act very over-the-top (behavior that Blaire doesn't like).

What's also terrible is that Blaire doesn't believe nonbinary people exist and doesn't view them as fellow trans people because they don't fit on the binary spec, not all of them transition, and not all of them experience gender dysphoria. She doesn't understand them, therefore she doesn't think nonbinary people exist, which they do. She's just going entirely off of her own opinion, acting like it's a fact.

So, basically, if other trans don't follow her same experience and have her same or similar opinions, they're invalid. She doesn't like them = they aren't valid and deserve to be bullied. It's horrible.

Kelly Cadigan also makes it very clear she feels this same way and even made a recent video directly saying that she doesn't believe nonbinary people exist and that she feels they invalidate her as a trans person. Watching that video is awful because she's only backing up why she feels this way with her own made up notions. She doesn't understand them = they aren't real.

Being Privileged

Blaire and Kelly are both very privileged in being white, able-bodied, cis-passing trans women. And Kalvin Garrah is a white, able-bodied, cis-passing trans man.

They were able to receive the gender affirming care they desired - including surgeries and hormone blockers - which are methods that allow them to pass better (and that help them feel much more comfortable in their own bodies). Not every trans person has that privilege to receive the gender affirming care they need to transition, whether it's not being able to afford the care or being incapable of having it for other medical reasons. Or, like I had mentioned in my last section, Dylan received it and does not pass quite as well as Blaire does (at least in the eyes of Blaire and many other viewers). OR, they choose NOT to try passing simply because it may not be a goal of theirs in their trans/gender identity journey.

Yet, none of them seem to understand this. And because they don't, they invalidate other trans people for it. The worst is that Kelly agrees with the laws against gender affirming care for minors, when she herself transitioned healthily as a minor. It makes me want to ask her: "How would kid you (pretransitioned) feel if these laws had gone into effect back then?" Probably terrible, if I had my guess. Considering she received care so early on, she most likely had bad gender dysphoria, and getting those puberty blockers was a potential life saver for her or at the least a massive relief on her mental health as a trans kid. And if I'm right in assuming it helped her so much, it's absolutely ludicrous and hypocritical saying other trans kids don't deserve it.

Blaire didn't receive trans healthcare as a minor, however, she also agrees that kids should not be allowed to have rights to gender affirming care, especially since she thinks kids aren’t mature enough to understand themselves yet. She goes about this a different way than Kelly by actively interviewing detransitioners who all have had bad experiences transitioning - mainly as kids - that they deeply regret, and then weaponizing their stories against the trans community. Detransitioners are valid in their experiences, but it's not right at all to use these experiences to harm the trans community. Doing that can strip away even more validation and rights. Also keep in mind: not every detransitioner regrets their experience or had one that messed them up badly. (I recommend watching Sam Collins' video with Alia Ishmael where she speaks about her past transition in a more positive manner while still explaining what personal drawbacks she experienced and doesn't use her story to harm the trans community. AND, his other video calling out how Blaire is weaponizing people’s stories.)

Cis-passing aside, you can see I also mentioned they're both white and able-bodied. I mention this too because it helps them be listened to more, as well. People of color and disabled people are also both minority groups, let alone when they're also in the LGBT+ community. I've even witnessed Blaire White and Kalvin Garrah make comments about a enby individual's disability which is absolutely foul.

The Propaganda

You'd think trans people wouldn't be spreading lies about other trans people since they're in the same minority group. Wrong.

Blaire White makes a lot of videos with misleading titles and made up quotes from trans people she wants to invalidate. For example, a few years ago, she made a video about trans powerlifter, Janae Marie Croc, with a misleading title, an edited post that made it seem like she was competing against cis women, and comments about how "outlandish" her appearance is. It was so obviously fake and Janae even pointed this all out to Blaire. A lot of people were mad at her for it and Blaire had the worst apology post. And, sadly, a lot of Blaire's content is just like this, this one just happened to be more obvious. (If you want more details on that, watch D'Angelo Wallace's video and Sam Collins' video about her misleading people).

Blaire lost a lot of followers, but not enough to deplatform her or make her irrelevant. She still has a rather big following and people who believe everything she says, despite it being fake and based solely on her own opinion. And a lot of these same people who watch Blaire, thinking she's an honest and acceptable trans person, also watch Kelly. But Kelly does the same thing - talks solely based on her own opinion while making things up.

The Terminology They Use

I've noticed Blaire, Kelly, and Kalvin use a lot of the same "traditional" terms. For instance, they're say transexual and transgenderism instead of transgender to explain themselves. It's just really strange to hear. But, I feel like they use it to cater to these conservatives.

Like, transexual is an outdated term. Transgenderism implies that being trans is an ideological thing (which it isn't) and you should absolutely run from anyone who is using that term unironically.

They also said they view the trans community as a cult and believe they are pushing an agenda. These are both terms conservatives use pretty frequently.

Conclusion

This whole "Blaire White Effect" - and how Blaire reached the mentality she has, in the first place - started from hate towards the trans community leading to internalized transphobia. It's happened with people like Kelly Cadigan and Kalvin Garrah, too.

But, a trans person changing their mentality and content to fit the views of conservatives only causes more harm and can eventually come to bite them in the ass. Because, at the end of the day, most of these conservatives do not want to change their mind about trans people - most of them still don't like people like Blaire simply because they're trans. It doesn't matter that they have the same political views. And, agreeing with the terrible shit these conservatives are doing and saying will make them take away even more rights, which will affect Blaire, Kelly, and Kalvin.

However, these trans people have the ability to change their thoughts and content if they actually want to do more research and not keep talking out of their ass. I had mentioned Storm Ryan dropping his friendship with Kalvin when he realized how harmful and wrong these views are. There's also a trans TikToker who reacted to Kelly's video about nonbinary people, explaining he used to feel the same way but that nonbinary people being open and confident about their identities actually help validate other trans people's identities (his explanation is much better than mine. Watch it.)

Don't let Blaire White - and any other person like her - invalidate your identity. They're speaking from their own self-hatred and that's their problem, not yours.

My thoughts on pokemon scarlet and violet so far!!

first off, general thoughts: It looks good!!! the framerate in the new trailer is way better now which is cool, I like the sorta open-world style of newer games so i'm glad thats, like, a more permanent thing now?? i guess?? i dunno how 2 phrase it, but i like the direction the series is going!!

more under the cut (warning, this is gonna get LONG):

I think its really weird that pl:a JUST came out a couple months ago, and now they're releasing another game??? Already??? gamefreak already has such a small amount of time to make pkmn games, and legends: arceus was kind of a big game!!! So are they... ok??? they're probably super overworked already!! The whole situation with gamefreak just sucks in general. They HAVE to release a game every 2 years and games are getting kind of worse over time (I mean the mainline ones, not spinoffs like pl:a or new pokemon snap) and it really shows how overworked the devs are! Merch and anime can't come out until new games come out, and theres always lots of demand for new pokemon games in general!! The entire franchise revolves around new games coming out every 2 years, and its a shitty situation no matter how you look at it.

Speaking of games getting worse over time, the GIMMICK. the gimmick is baaad. Again, I don't think this is really gamefreaks fault!! I'm pretty sure they HAVE to make a new battle gimmick for every game, or else they would have brought mega evolution back a LONG time ago. I like the lighting effects i guess!!! everything else looks kind of ugly. :(

Anyways, with all that negativity mostly out of the way!!! here are some way more lighthearted thoughts about the game so far. (man, talking about all that really screwed up my mood... >:T)

The trainers!!!! oh man oh wow!!!!!!! Theyre so cute!!!!! i looove mela so much shes SO COOL!!!!! (i KNOW people are gonna be really weird about her which sucks though. these are kids!!! in school!!!!!) I love love LOVE her whole style a whole lot. The team star guys are pretty cute, theyre not as cool as team skull or anything though. they're really generic. It's fine with me as long as you get get some star glasses 4 the player, too!! I hate that we're just fighting a bunch of school rebels tho. i wanna BE a rebel, not fight them!!! >:P!!!!!

Other than that i like brassius!! i like how different he is from other grass type trainers. I don't like the professors 4 this region tho, idk why. theyre just boring 2 me :P. Penny looks like she gets into slur discourse in tiktok comment sections. Nemona is fine!! Theres nothing special about her, really. Jacq is pretty neat!!! So is Geeta even though her hair really throws me off 4 whatever reason.

Anyways, now for the pokemon themselves!!! So far this gen is a really mixed bag!!

I LOVE YOU FUECOCO OH MAN OH WOW!!!!!!!! thats totally the starter i'm picking. No complaints, just little lizard dinosaur thing swag!! <3<3<3

Sprigatito is also cute!!! I love the fact that it has a kneading move. Its kinda generic, but i like it a lot anyways. The only thing that i dislike about this little dude is the shape of its head. its face is so flat.... it has NO snout 2 speak of........ but other than that its great!!!

Quaxly is... there!!! i kinda feel like this is gonna be a tepig type of situation where theres nothing WRONG with it necessarily, but it's just kind of boring or not as "cool" or "cute" as the other starters. Its good, but not as interesting as the other starters!!

The legendaries are neat i guess. I dunno why they're motorcycles but whatever! Its cool!!! Like, i get that it fits for violet, since these games r all about past vs. future and all that, but what about scarlet?? I know a lot of people r put off by the necks or whatever (there are a lot of lizards in this gen, huh?) but i have no problem with them! Speaking of which, cyclizar is... kind of ugly!!! whys it barf green!!! i just don't like it im sorry.

cetitan is SCARY. WHY ARE ITS TEETH LIKE THAT???? I hate looking at it actually. People keep talking about how creepy grafaiai is, when THIS THING is right here... o.0"'

I LOVE ceruledge and armarouge!!! i like armarogue slightly more cuz of the fire at the top of its head + the general shape of it. Hard 2 explain... Like, the legs. The armor. its SHAPED!! ceruledge is also really awesome tho!!!! these 2 r single handedly making me STRUGGLE 2 pick which game i'm gonna get cuz I REALLY want armarouge but ceruledge is also really cool and i like miraidon more than koraidon and i have nobody 2 trade with ;-;... sighhhh. I hate choice paralysis. I should probably just spin a wheel or something...

I actually really liked klawf until about 30 minutes ago when i read the website and apparently it can rotate its eyes 360 degrees???? which is CREEPY.

LECHONK. Lechonk is wonderful. So are fidough and smoliv. i would kill and/or die 4 them all. 11/10

Pawmi is this gens pika clone!!! I think its neat :]

Grafaiai is..... scary!! it's not the eyes for me, its the FINGERS. They're long and spindly and thin and it creeps me out. Lemurs r cool and they deserve a pokemon that isnt!!! like that!!!!!

last but not least, paldean wooper!!!!!!!! my boy wooper is getting some love.... itll never live up 2 the original wooper, who is the ultimate + optimal life form, but its a great second best. :0]

I have 2 wishes 4 this game..... those being clothing options other than the uniforms and also cute twintails. Preferably frizzy ones. Gamefreak better deliver on these or else i will be kind of sad and thats about it. OH ALSO i hope boys can wear girl clothes and vice versa, like in animal crossing. That probably wont happen though ¬_¬

Thats about it!!! I'm generally rlly optimistic about this gen!!!! it looks great even when it doesnt (grafaiai, pkmn professors, klawf and cetitan I'M LOOKING AT YOU) lolz!!

Ranking versions of Meant To Be Yours

I’m bored so I’m ranking the JDs based on how they sing Meant To Be Yours. This is only the JDs featured in this video ( https://youtu.be/Ryrt5NWHpFo ) so y’know that’s not all the professional ones and some of the ones featured in it are like university ones. Anyways I did write half of this at 2am so like. A lot of this may just be a mess and me being like “good vibes.” Also, if you ask me some other time maybe this order would have changed. It’s hard to rank 14 different people. Anyways yeah here we go!

1st. Jamie Muscato - Listen. If you didn’t expect this then frankly that’s on you. I will give you the short version for the sake of anyone who reads this (will gladly provide a long version if anyone asks for it). I’m just gonna list the stuff to make this quicker and easier:

“You were MEANT TO BE MINE” with the punch forward

“I am all that you need, you carved open my heart” the way his voice goes slightly softer and he’s walking backward and shaking his head and has his eyes closed and is pulling down his shirt slightly

THE COAT FLIP!!

“Open the, open the door please” He goes a lot quieter then and has that lil smile forming and I LOVE IT

Gonna sound like a tiktok commenter but yeah the pleading and slight whining vibes

2nd. Ryan McCartan - If you asked me for my opinion before I put this video on I would say that he's not that great. However, this video seems like it has audio from him actually singing on stage and oh boy do I love it. Man has a really nice voice and I've always liked it so there's that. But dude man has a lot more emotion in this recording?? He sounds like he's about to cry during the "you carved open my heart" line which I absolutely love. And he full on screams "Veronica" and then kinda sounded like he was gonna cry again on the "open the door please" line. I don't like the album version cause he has little emotion in it but nah man is fully going for it here and I love that for him.

3rd. Dan Domenech - Idk what to say about him cause I don't have strong emotions based off just this clip. He has a very nice voice. But idk man it just feels kinda mediocre. I don't love it, I don't hate it. I know I had a lot more thoughts when I watched the full version but I can't be bothered watching it all rn. He doesn't sound angry or upset enough imo. I do like his scream on "Veronica" and "I'm gonna count to three" and how he sounded like he was pleading on the "can we not fight anymore please" line. Also like his lil spin during the "Veronica!" part. Also he doesn’t move too much which like he doesn’t need to but I’d prefer a few more actions.

Joint 4th. Wendell Scherer - Never heard of the man until now but I like his voice. He seems quite frustrated which is a vibe. He's got a good level of nonchalant during some parts. The way he acts when screaming "Veronica, open the, open the door please"? A huge vibe. He's just seems so Done and I love that. I'm pretty sure what I said didn't make much sense there and I just repeated myself. What I'm trying to say is, yknow the part in tl5y in if I didn't believe in you, Jamie says "can we just do that, please? PLEASE?", specifically the Jonathan Bailey version of that song? Yeah those vibes. Anyways I need a full bootleg of this version. Will say that he doesn't have the full chaotic vibes tho. Oh also they “don’t make me come in there” just like. The tad hint of more anger and stuff was good.

Joint 4th. Forest Filiano - First time I watched the video of him singing this song, I loved it, but now I just don’t think it’s anything amazing?? He doesn’t have that good of a voice imo, and most of it is just kinda screaming and not in a good way. That man is going full on chaotic tho so like props to him on that. I like the part where he just aggressively slaps his chest and also like. Throws himself at the door. And the hand through the hair!! Always a big fan of that!! But bestie why put the gun away when you’re gonna kick down the door like there was no need to bring it out then, y’know? But man seems like he’s having a great time so good for him. Also again he’s probably quite young so like I assume he would have a better voice now. Also his singing voice sounds nicer in other songs so like, it’s probably just cause of him going for a more screaming kinda vibe since it fits the song more.

5th. Jordan Luke Gage - He has a good voice and his acting is alright but idk I’m not a big fan tbh?? Man’s hands be going everywhere at the after there. I can’t tell if I love or hate the lil smile he has going on near the start. He seems like he was gonna start giggling. Did kinda sound sad during the “meant to be mine” line but again it did seem like he was on the verge of giggling so. Good yell on the “Veronica!” He be kinda tumbling around the place which is like. Like y’know his movements aren’t all co-ordinated (that’s so not the right word I’m sure but oh well). His voice and lean on the “can we not fight anymore please” part is nice. He sounds kinda stressed and also his voice on “Veronica don’t make me come in there” has the vibes of “I genuinely do not want to have to force myself in but you give me no choice” which is funky in a good way!! The more I watch it, the more it grows on me tbh. Unrelated too but he has good hair.

6th. Mariah Rose Faith - Love her voice, she has such a beautiful voice, definitely is one of the reasons for how I realised I’m bi, but anyways moving on. She’s purely not that high up just cause she can’t really act since it’s just a cover and she’s also doing it on her guitar so she can’t play it or sing it the way she would be able to do if she was actually performing it. But yeah she has just. Such a soft and pretty voice and love it. Also dude he “bleed”? Bestie dragged that out for so long and kept getting higher and it’s just so pretty sounding I’m :(( Also idk how to describe it but the way she sounds during the “Veronica, open the, open the door please” is superior. She just got that lil smile and she sounds so evil and her voice just kinda gains a bit more anger and frustration as it goes. Also, at the begining she kinda sounds upset and heartbroken a bit which is like but it does have the vibes that Veronica is already “dead”

7th. Diego Montez - Always wanted to watch the Brazilian one!! Man is really going for it!! He got the angry vibes down hard. Man got the stomping feet and slapping his chest. I really don’t have much to say. Man is just going for it and I do love it. However, he doesn’t move much, so I’m not a fan of that. He just kinda chills in the same spot. Also what was he doing on the “fuck it!” part?? (I think it was that part) like bestie’s whole body just went down. Anyways yeah it was a vibe. However, it doesn’t really seem like JD to me. Also costume people need to give that man a trenchcoat.

8th. Jacob Fowler - Alright voice, kinda on the softer side, don’t like how he yells “Veronica!” Bestie how are you saying “Can we not fight anymore please?” Like. Sir?? I mean, I don’t think I hate it but just?? Idk it sounded odd. I don’t think he sounds American enough either?? I truly don’t have much to say on him. Don’t hate it, don’t love it. Trying to rank him is so hard too. Like. He is just there. Again, no hate to the man, I do like Jacob, just based on this audio clip I’m not a huge fan.

9th. Jeremy Jordan - Lemme get this clear, mans is my favourite singer and actor ever and if you know me then you know how much I love Jeremy. Also, it pains me so much putting people above him. Anyways, I don't like his JD that much. That's not on him tho, that's on the fact it's a concert and also in a way he is the first musical JD (yeah there's the readings but like I'm not exactly counting them so). But yeah, I like his voice but there's not enough emotion and anger in it. He could 100% do much better now and I could still listen to him sing it all day everyday.

10th. Thomas Sanders - Again I like the man's voice and this is just based on audio but it just sounds mediocre. I genuinely don't have anything to say. Also have a hard time seeing Thomas as JD. Also went and found the tiktok of him singing it (didn’t realise they’d show it later) and it's clear he wasn't very comfortable with singing it in that key(??) (man said so himself even) but he sounds good still!!! Not a huge fan of the acting but I do like some of the angry faces he makes, specifically on the "can't just leave me to bleed" line. He seems like he's going more for the.. I don't wanna say loving side cause clearly the man isn't loving in the song but like.. idk how else to describe it other than loving (it's 2am, I have no braincells okay)

11th. Augusto Castellano - I can’t explain why I don’t like it or why he’s so down below, my gut instinct was just “I don’t like it”. He kinda has the vibes of a spider and a bug with some of those movements. His hands go to his face too often in some weird movements. He seems to be utilising his space tho so that’s good. 12th. Zachariah Sterner - Pretty sure he's like a teenager so I don't want to judge too harshly. Not a fan of his voice or acting tho, but again pretty sure he's like a teenager (or I'm completely wrong idk) Man is just like the lil standing man emoji tho. He kinda keeps his movements closer to himself which I like. Also the way his voice just kinda went up high during one of the "please"s was fun.

13th. Juanse Diez - I’ve never heard of this man before but anyways! Not a huge fan of his voice. He does look kinda young tho so (do wanna note that I’m aware you can sound good when you’re young, but like, you’re gonna sound better when you’re older cause you’re gonna have more experience and learn more so). He seems to be going more for the softer side in terms of vocals and he doesn’t really sound angry ever. The acting isn’t that good either, mans is mostly just staring at the door. Tbf, this ain’t even done on a stage, it looks like it was from a tiktok so. Anyways no hate to the dude, just don’t like it.

Anyways! No hate to all the JDs! They all do different things well and all have their own interpretation of him, I just enjoy some more than others. If you read this all, I just have to say; why? This was probably a waste of your time tbh. Anyways, have a good day!! I can probably never listen to the ending of this song again after listening to it at least 28 times in a row!!

emma macdonald: is she worth watching or should you keep scrolling? my thoughts, opinions, and review.

i don’t know about a lot of you, but if you’re someone who watches a lot of youtube, you might’ve stumbled upon one of the most fascinating and interesting genres on the platform - lifestyle vlogs. there are countless people - mostly teen / young adult girls who document their lives and journeys of going through life, and sharing their daily or weekly celebrations, struggles, and experiences. most of them live a life that seems glamorous and fun, but it begs the question of who’s really telling the truth and who’s just putting on a show?

i’ve watched a lot of lifestyle gurus, and one person in particular i’ve stumbled upon a little over a year ago was miss emma macdonald (pictured below). in case you don’t know who she is, she’s a 19 year old vlogger from boston, massachusetts. according to her, her channel “is mostly around my daily life, fitness, health, fashion (if hoodies and sweatpants count). Mostly a place to make you happy and feel good about you!!” in this current moment, she has garnered 336k subscribers. something i find kind of unique about her is the fact that her older sister maggie also has a youtube channel with 327k subscribers, and she makes similar content, if her description is anything to go by.

now don’t get me wrong, two sisters making similar content isn’t that special, but it’s just a little interesting. based on their videos, you can tell they’re very close and often hang out together and make cameos in each other’s vlogs, which isn’t surprising since they live close together.

EMMA’S CHANNEL - her likability

now, diving into emma’s channel, here’s my opinion. i can totally see her appeal. i mean, let’s not forget the society in which we live in. she’s a young, conventionally attractive, white, thin, and blonde woman living an incredibly privileged life in one of the best cities in america. with these factors it’s no surprise she has an audience. i will admit, there are times i’ve watched her channel and i find myself having this surge of sudden motivation, and i suddenly want to go and do something besides watch youtube videos all day. i think sometimes she gives off good vibes in her videos, and i enjoy watching her and her sister interact - they’re very sweet together.

WHERE EMMA FALLS SHORT

if i’m being honest, my problem with emma lies in the fact that oftentimes she comes across as materialistic. don’t get me wrong, i know she must make a ton of money on youtube, and i’m not going to sit here and tell her how to spend her money. she can do whatever she wants with it, but the amount of times she uploads videos in which she talks about her clothes, sneakers, and sweats can't go unnoticed. i don’t want to come across as nitpicky, but this criticism is one i often read in her comment sections, and on tumblr blogs. it’s also a prevalent thing i find with a lot of young influencers these days. it gives off the vibe of all show, and no substance. i think emma is capable of making good content, but there are moments when she comes across as vapid and shallow. i’m not saying every vlog has to be some shakespearean masterpiece, but if you go through her catalogue from even the past few months, you’d see what i’m talking about.

on a related note, another opinion i’ve developed and read is that emma’s life just isn’t all too interesting. if we narrow down how many of her vlogs are centered around her talking about shopping, hanging out with her sister, working out, or just riding in her car, it’d probably add up to 95% of her content. i understand that’s what her content would revolve around according to her description, but i often wonder, if you took away the glitz and glamor, and she was a regular girl, would you be interested in her life? some content is exciting, but it’s really nothing special. i mean, how long can you show the same thing before people move on and grow out of it? i watched maggie’s videos to get a sense of these two, and sometimes i prefer maggie’s vlogs to emma’s. i think maggie’s older age and maturity givers her a certain appeal that i don’t always see from emma. the macdonald sisters make very similar content, so it’s not a huge contrast, but sometimes i feel like i prefer maggie’s videos to emma’s. it’s subjective, of course, but since i’ve caught myself having these thoughts, i feel like it’s worth noting.

EMMA’S LIFE - who is she?

when we watch these people, it’s natural to want to know everything about them, including their personal life. sometimes the line between privacy and honesty gets blurred and youtubers overshare and reveal too much, or they share too little and their subscribers feel as if they know nothing about the person they’re watching. i feel like emma falls somewhere in the middle because she does open up about personal struggles, relationships, and journeys, but she also maintains a certain level of privacy that’s probably needed for the internet. however, one thing i always wonder is who are emma’s friends? if you watch her videos, you can see that her best friend is maggie. it’s common for your sibling to be your best friend, but is that all? emma has youtube friends, and her roommate, but she hardly talks about them. one of her public friendships is with paige lorenze, who’s not exactly the paragon of maturity and likability. the common consensus with paige is not a favorable one, and i can make a whole post dedicated to her and her foolishness. it’s not surprising these two paired up since they seem to be in the hockey scene, but that's another topic. something worth noting with these two is that months ago emma uploaded a grwm for a date night video, and she essentially promoted products in which all signs pointed to a pyramid scheme. she had hundreds of people telling her to be more cautious and judicious about what she promotes, but she held her belief that they were good, clean products since paige was a consultant for the company. this rubbed me and everyone else with a modicum of common sense the wrong way, because she clearly didn’t do her due diligence, and she didn’t realize that it’s probably not the smartest idea to promote a pyramid scheme. emma’s audience is likely made up of girls her age and younger who are impressionable. she has to be more aware of what she puts out there. it’s not a huge scandal, but it wasn't one of her brightest moments. if she keeps that up, i can totally see her carelessness getting her into more trouble later on.

additionally, i feel like she’s had fall outs with some of her friends, such as her high school best friend ella. i don’t know too much about her, but it’s obvious emma and ella have been best friends for a long time, and she even made a lot of appearances in emma’s earlier videos. however, clearly something went wrong at some point because i recall months ago ella made a tiktok calling emma out for trying to confess her love for ella’s boyfriend. i also recall emma clapping back in the comments, but then she talked about hanging out with ella in some of her recent vlogs, so who knows what even happened there. i just found this to be shady, and if it’s the truth, it could be indicative of emma’s character. but, since not much came of this, i guess there’s not much to tell.

overall, what do i think of emma?

i think she’s an average girl who just got lucky with the platform she’s been given. you can find a hundred girls like her on any social media. she’s not reinventing the wheel or anything with her content. i can see the appeal at times, but her vlogs are nothing more than those videos you watch at night when you want to shut your brain off and unwind.

what i would love to see more of is her real personality. something that other people say about emma (when she’s with her sister or friends) is that she’s actually a funny person in real life and it doesn’t always come across that way in videos. i’d love for her to open up more about her true self and make more sit down videos, or more q&a’s. the q&a she did with paige recently was actually a pleasant change of pace, and i liked some of the things she had to say. when she vlogs her daily or weekly life, and all she talks about is working out, shopping, or hanging out with her sister, i don’t feel like i see her real self, and i certainly don’t see the humor everyone else raves about. if she showed her true personality a little bit more, then maybe people would see a different, less materialistic version of herself. she has the potential, but right now i’m not seeing anything incredibly special.

as i’m editing this, the macdonald sisters have decided to travel - AGAIN - during the PANDEMIC. i’m not sure if they understand this little concept, but a social media following doesn’t exempt them from catching corona. it’s really disappointing to see them traveling for the third time?? i’ve lost count because they keep doing it. like i stated in my conclusion, their videos aren’t anything spectacular, so i get going on a vacation spices your content up, but girls read the room. if influencers can’t be entertaining without traveling all the time, then why do they even have a youtube channel? the comments on maggie’s tiktok in which people rightfully called them out for their recent trip gives me some hope in humanity. at least some people know better. @ macdonald sisters, be smarter. do better. you guys have an influence. google the definition of the word if you have to, just stay home.
