Some really good news overshadowed by the tragedy with the floods in Larissa and the rest of Thessaly but

the ancient theatre downtown in Larissa was recently open again to an audience after 1700 years! The ancient theatre was built in the 3rd century BC and operated for 600 years until it was severely damaged from an earthquake in the 3rd century AD and stopped being used. In the 7th century, another earthquake destroyed it completely.

The theatre had a capacity of 10,000 people and it was dedicated to Dionysus.

It has been a well known historical attraction in Larissa, however now after some progress in the long restorations, it is becoming again a functioning theatre like all ancient theatres in Greece that are in a decent enough condition.

So a few months ago I came across this very odd 'bird-man' vase, which the Met site said 'almost certainly relates to Aristophanes’ well-known comedy The Birds (first produced in 415/414 B.C.) and may represent the costume that would have been worn by members of the chorus in the fifth century B.C.'

Then today I saw this figure on the museum-digital.de site which is identified as an 'actor in bird costume' wearing a feathered costume and flapping his arms like wings. He's not wearing a mask, but they still identify it as a possible costume for the choir in Aristophanes' play. Quite a different costume if so! This hides the hands where the other one shows arms with wings like a cape over them, and this one shows his face where the other one seems to depict a mask. It is of course also possible neither of these objects depict actors at all! That play is hardly the only reason to create strange half-bird figures.

I wonder what the costumes really looked like (and how much variation there was between different stagings).

Το αρχαίο θέατρο της Αίγειρας,που χρονολογείται στο α’ μισό του 3ου αιώνα π.Χ.,Αχαΐα

Σύμφωνα με βάσιμες υποθέσεις η Αίγειρα ταυτίζεται με την ομηρική πόλη «Υπερησίη», ενώ η μετονομασία της έλαβε χώρα στις αρχές του 7ου π. χ. αιώνα. Κατά μία παράδοση, η Υπερησίη μετονομάσθηκε σε Αίγειρα, επειδή καλυπτόταν με δάση δένδρων αιγείρου, δηλαδή, του δέντρου «λεύκα».

Τον Αύγουστο του 1972, μετά από διακοπή 45 ετών, άρχισαν οι ανασκαφές στα ερείπια της αρχαίας Αίγειρας από το Αυστριακό Αρχαιολογικό Ινστιτούτο της Αθήνας. Οι ανασκαφές έγιναν σε τέσσερα σημεία, στο χώρο της Ακρόπολης, το αρχαίο θέατρο, στα ερείπια του ναού του Δία και στο χώρο μεταξύ του θεάτρου και του ναού του Δία.

Στο χώρο της Ακρόπολης βρέθηκαν αρχαία κτίσματα και πολυάριθμα όστρακα, που χρονολογούνται από τη Μυκηναϊκή περίοδο μέχρι τους Ρωμαϊκούς χρόνους. Επίσης, αποκαλύφθηκε τμήμα του θεάτρου με τις κερκίδες του, που είναι λαξευμένες σε επικλινή βράχο. Στο χώρο του θεάτρου ανοίχθηκαν δύο μεγάλες τομές, μέσα στις οποίες διαφαίνονται αρχαία κτίσματα.

Πλησίον του θεάτρου αποκαλύφθηκε αρχαίο κτίσμα στη δεξιά πλευρά του οποίου και σε όλο το μήκος του υπάρχουν λαξευμένοι λάκκοι, που μοιάζουν με ποτίστρες ζώων. Βορειοδυτικά του θεάτρου αποκαλύφθηκε κεραμικός κλίβανος και περισυλλέγησαν αγγεία, πολλά από τα οποία χρονολογούνται στη γεωμετρική περίοδο. Επίσης, βρέθηκαν τμήματα σίμης με έντονο χρωματισμό, σπασμένα πήλινα πιάτα και όστρακα. Στη δεξιά πλευρά του κλιβάνου βρέθηκε αγωγός νερού. Δυτικά του θεάτρου αποκαλύφθηκε μωσαϊκό από χαλίκια ποταμού με διάφορες παραστάσεις. Επίσης, πλησίον του μωσαϊκού βρέθηκε κιονόκρανο Ιωνικού ρυθμού και πολύ αρχιτεκτονικό υλικό, που ανήκε στο ναό του Δία.
