So a shameless promotion of my bestie’s authortok!
CA Caesar is a queer female Classicist specialising in both Homer (particularly LHIII Sparta) and ancient Naval Warfare (because she’s changeable like that), who is currently sharing the writing process for her debut novel, The Lord of the Silver Bow, which she has been working on for five years now.
The novel follows the story of Apollo and Hyancinthus, and focuses on love and grief and how that might have shaped Apollo in the face of the Trojan War.
Now, I am as sick of myth retellings as everyone, but what sets this novel apart, from what I have seen as an archaeologist, is the historical accuracy. The author has put so so so much time and effort into making the novel as historically accurate as possible, including research trips to Greece to sites like the Menelaion and Amyclae in Laconia, as well as (of course) Delphi (whilst working on her academic research, under her real name), and so much work translating and making family trees, etc. This novel really is a love letter to her subject, rather than just being your standard booktok retelling. And it certainly helps that the author herself is a queer writer, because I can say whole heartedly, having seen the current manuscript, that there is no fetishisation of gay relationship.
So… that’s the intro. Her @ on TikTok is c.a.caesar (linked), and as well as posting about her writing process, she also posts a fair bit about her academic research. She’s new to TikTok so I thought I’d give it a share to see if anyone’s interested in checking her page out!

look at this tiny tiny ancient depiction of a goose sheltering babies beneath her wings. 🥺
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's not very detailed but look at the postures of the animals. And the way the goslings are not very young but recognisable as gangly and halfway grown.
Greek, Late Archaic Period, about first half of 5th century B.C.
