Can you really say you’ve lived if you have never biked home from the used book sale 📚 with a colorful bell 🔔 to warn people out of your way because you’re carrying 20 pounds of books on your handlebars? 🚲 I think you know MY answer to that question 😎
I want to hear all about your favourite things about the found family/squad trope! Please feel free to gush about anything found family related; from favourite type (eg. Master-apprentice) to aspects (hurt one learning to love again). If you have examples, tell me about it! Drop that favourite book/movie/scene/ character. This is an open invitation to gush!
Researching styles and trends of the late 1890s, I came across this picture of Frances Benjamin Johnston:
Captioned: Self Portrait (as New Woman), an 1896 self-portrait taken in her Washington, DC studio
Me: Damn, look at how she’s sitting. Look at her facial expression. Hell, look at her props - a cigarette in one hand and a beer stein in the other. If she wasn’t queer I’ll eat my damn hat.
Wikipedia, hearing my thoughts: “With her partner, Mattie Edwards Hewitt, a successful freelance home and garden photographer in her own right, Johnston opened a studio in New York in 1913.”
YUP.
Oh, and,
“Her mother and aunt moved into her new apartment.” With them.
𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒅 - 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 🧜♀️ Book 25 of 2020 📚 A nice short tale to add to my read pile for 2020. It’s so much sadder than the Disney version of the story, but you can see the elements from which they pulled their version. #amreading #thelittlemermaid #hanschristiananderson #fairytales #mermaids #mermaidfairytales #mermaidstories #novella #shortstories #bookish #bookworm #ebook #bookish #bookstagram #booksaremylife #booksandreading #amresearching https://www.instagram.com/p/CB258iLAPmq/?igshid=2s3nuteit4hr
I'm in the midst of updating my research into Anita's full battle rattle; the clothing and equipment she would wear when she's serving a warrant and hunting monsters. To my delight I found comfortable pants with pockets built for a woman's curves! So a tricky and really fun part of #writing #historicalfiction is that occasionally you have to throw in a few pieces of technical howdydo to add flavour, make people feel like they're there, and make it look like you have any idea what you're talking about. That usually involves extensive #research, but in the event that simply #reading doesn't help, you need to roll up your sleeves and #experiment. So, now I have a #sextant. . #celestialnavigation #navigation #nautical #sailing #astrolabe #amwriting #handson #amresearching #writerproblems #writerslife #histfic #historicalfantasy #flintlockfantasy #yohoyohoawriterslifeforme https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs6DTIGHF_h/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=r4qvz45xtb4g
Today I had to Google info on organized crime, description of what blood tastes like and how to get ahead in the military. If I wasn't on a list before, I am now.
The second picture in this post is my two cents on the Rose and Jack argument about “the door” in the Titanic movie as this topic always seems to resurface on Twitter. In reality what should have happened (if we’re being historically accurate) is that Rose should have climbed onto an overturned “collapsible” boat. Jack, already succumbing to hypothermia, would not have the strength to climb up with her. Perhaps not as heartbreaking as it was filmed, but definitely more accurate. #jackandrose #titanicmovie #titanicdoor #historicallyaccurate #titanicresearch #amresearching #amwriting #writerlife https://www.instagram.com/p/CY2II9-vf1b/?utm_medium=tumblr
How the hell did anyone research anything for their stories before the internet? Like, I just found the location of the Tim Hortons inside the Bioengineering building at the University of Toronto, and I never left my Washington, DC house! Within five minutes of that, I learned what biosensing is and determined the average cost of a used motorcycle.
Screw flying cars, this future is way more useful.
