Underverse Opening Brain Creator Thoughts

Warning: Blood, death, devastation, violence, lots of it, not great written fight scenes, creator rambles.

"In the face of tension, pain and devastation... The connection that's between our hearts..." Cue the showcase of many skeleton boys as well as their respective sonas. "Is reaching through the time!" It then cuts to Ivy startling and then looking over as her eyes widen in horror as it cuts to the title card. "Through the time!" It showcases someone smirking at her as others surround them.

Then, as it continues, it shows a fight between Dusk and Bliss before it cuts to another fight. The fighting continues as someone seems to interrupt it and the twins look over in horror.

It shows a variety of scenes after:

It then shows Marguerite tensing and looking over.

Willow fixed her scarf and looked away.

Primrose holding a piece of fabric before she looks up.

It shows Nerium moving her hand from her cheek to under her chin.

Then it shows Flori pulling her hair free of a ponytail.

It shows Marigold dancing happily as she pauses to glance over and Primula stops dancing as water that was floating falls around her.

Azalea rests her hand on her chest as she startles and looks around.

It shows Hollyhock biting her lip as she then reaches out towards something glowing.

It shows Ivy gripping her necklace as her magic glows and then she closes her eyes as the camera pans.

"You, so tired and cold stand here, between the worlds..." It shows Tusche and Lenovo waking up with their brothers confused as children. They have some people reaching for them. "Each of them you saw get broken to the core..." It then shows the dust of the people and then their conflict as it grew. "Dark is creeping closer..." It shows someone writing and then smirking as a creature comes to life. "Spark in your heart's frozen..." It shows a ghost skeleton monster glance over, her eyes glowing before she turns to mist. The camera pans... "There's nothing left anymore." It shows an angel skeleton monster yelling and reaching before the AU falls apart around them.

"When a dream turns into a nightmare!" It shows Dusk and Bliss facing off but then time cuts to them as Myrsky soothes Bliss and Archemoros fights Dusk in a looming large form. "Truth is right there!" It shows Archemoros besting Dusk, but then it cuts... "Gotta stay determined! (Listen to your heart and let it be your guiding star!)" Ivy is stranded in the anti-void as mechanical creatures surround her and she stays frozen. Her eyes widen in horror as an attack, but before it hits a skeleton with a mask scoops her up.

"Fight to push back the night!" It shows Acrylic using paints as Virus uses his strings. Comet and Umbra tag team as the creatures attack with beams and a figure looms above them. "No matter the pain and this plain devastation!" It shows Dusk and Bliss working together as Tusche and Lenovo work to push back the creatures. Cecilia and Poison help fight back as well. "For all the creations' sake -" It shows the masked skeleton avoiding attacks and weaving through as the princess carries Ivy. "Do not be afraid!" Ivy blinks in surprise.

"Together, we'll save everything-!" It shows Marguerite and Willow back to back as Marguerite grows confident and Willow seems angry. Nerium guards Flori as Primula and Marigold dance circles around the enemies. Azalea is healing while clasping her hands together and looking up. Primrose is helping heal with Azalea. "and make a new alternation!" It then cuts to Hollyhock, barely holding on, bleeding as she reaches for the "Break the Barrier button" and she hits it as she falls.

Time resets... And Ivy wakes up.

"Has this all been planned by one infernal hand?" It shows the enemy talking to someone as he finishes his next bot. "Made to play their role, the universes fall..." It shows Senna sitting in the void as she writes something down. She clenches her teeth as flowers bloom on her neck. "Lies are spreading fast, and lives get turned to dust..." It shows Senna lowering her pen as she sees the constant fighting of the Outcode group and looks displeased. "Is this deserved by them all?"

"Gotta step in, stop the daydream." Senna looks even more displeased as the fighting grows worse. She looks at her hands, she has to do something. "Your hearts filling with determination!" She wants them to survive this time. She wants everyone to survive.... She'll deal with this. "(Cannot pick the bridge when it's already time to cross!)" She steps forward a lightning strike forms as she raises her hand.

"Fight to bring back the light!" It shows the Outcode fighting before Senna decides to finally intervene. She moves forward as she their attacks deflect off her and her mask holds strong. "There won't be a sign of divine intervention!" It then cuts to a nasty fight between the enemy and the group, but now they're in unison.

"To save this dimension -!" It shows Captain and Cardinal tag teaming enemies together. Brass and Jet smoothly avoid fighting as they take out enemies together. Clove is protecting Hydra as Cinnamon heals Hydrangea and Harper. Glamour and Caramel are caring the back as the Dance boys dance around their enemies. Vanilla is carrying his brother as he shows off, but then it shows.... "Go, let's rise from below!" It shows Navy and Ebony joining the fray as they attack. It shows Sentinel and the other Angels not backing off as they're backed by the demons. "We have to take it all in our hands and show our true determination!" It shows the skeletons all joined together, but as Ivy ran, she fell into a crack and the skeleton who grabbed her reached for her. He falls after her.

It shows the two free-falling as Ivy seems to recall something.

"In the face of tension, pain and devastation... The connection that's between our hearts..." It shows Ivy sitting in a group of blurry and distorted groups as she stands by a familiar masked skeleton.

"Ivy!" The voice of the skeleton breaks her out as he reaches for her father.

"Is reaching through the time!" Ivy's eyes are blurred as she remembers her friends, the war, the death... All the death... "What's this feeling in my heart?" Ivy slowly reaches back as her eyes slowly unblur and she recalls who's reaching for her. "We're connected, though apart..." She can see her soul as his reaches for her.

"In the face of tension, pain, and devastation..." Ivy opens her mouth, willing it to work. She recalls everything as her soul glows more and her magic engulfs his. "Now I know I am filled with determination!"

"Honeycomb!" Her voice finally worked as he grabbed her hand and they're back in the fray.

"Live! You gotta believe!" As Ivy comes to, Honeycomb is holding her as Aquamarine joins the fray with Rain and Heath. They're fighting together as a trio. "Whoever you are, feel your star shining brighter!" It shows Undyne fighting as Asgore and Toriel protect the kids. Athena and Beryl were tag teaming together. The group fights as one as Tara and Theodoric help heal. "To bring back the light of day!" Oriel runs in and throws her spear through a great number of machines. Della is helping as best she can as the fight continues. "We cannot delay!"

"It is all or nothing, my friend..." Ivy pulls away from Honeycomb as she gets up. She helps the other sonas stand up as her body glows in her mafic. "So, right to the end, together we'll stand and-!" Marguerite guards Ivy on both sides as Willow helps guard the back. They nod at her.

"Fight to push back the night!" It cuts to Floryn closing her book and then her hands glow as Ivy pushes through the group as she dodges attacks. She is running now as her fellow sonas fight and fall. "No matter the pain and this plain devastation!" Willow fights hard and never backs down, Marguerite fights and doesn't hold back, and Nerium guards Flori as Primula and Marigold dance circles around the enemies, but even they fall. Azalea is guarding them with her magic as Hollyhock supplies more magic. Primrose helps supply the magic before Ivy runs.

"For all the creations' sake -!" Acrylic and his brother are fighting, but they're getting outnumbered. Cecilia is holding her hands together as Senna helps guard Ivy from a distance. Ivy winces and holds her bleeding side as she runs.

"Do not be afraid." A voice pushes Ivy harder. She listens to the voice as she runs and bleeds. She reaches for the button, the button to save the group again.

"Together, we'll save everything and make a new alternation!" Ivy hits the button as she smiles at Honeycomb one last time before...

She wakes up.

If you've come across the CDS covers, you may have noticed that since Akimaki Yuu took over as artist, they've had 迷宮編 (Labyrinth Volume/Saga/Arc) appended to the title and "Labyrinth" written in big letters. When they first started I was unsure what to make of it, but after three books, it seems to have been just a less extreme alternative to changing the whole title as they did when the fairy manga changed artists. Notice how they reset the book numbering too.

Whether or not the "Labyrinth" has some more specific meaning we don't know yet, it's thematically fitting for a mystery series full of confusion and dead ends (furthermore, 迷宮入り means a case going cold). And unlike with "Foul Detective" there's nothing wrong with the translation either. However, even officially, it's only really used on the covers and bookstore pages and not anywhere else when the series is discussed or even published online; and regardless, you can probably forgive me for not caring to call it "Cheating Detective Satori Labyrinth".

I don't know if I'll ever see much reason to say Labyrinth rather than "Akimaki's run" even when there is a need to specify (especially since I'd probably just need to clarify what that means anyway).

So I had a bit of an angsty though. What if during the events mc when when everything is fucked after Tricky high jacking the artifacts, that during him losing it but everything is still gone to hell. What if the player, hear me out. In order to restore the balance of the world(not completely tho). They have to do something like a hard reset to put things back in order. Aka, sacrifice themselves 👀

Like how it would be the alternate end to the it and depending on what happens, the player is sent back home or comes back shortly after permanently. (Still some madness going around, just not having hell above the world)

So for it being super long winded and I hope it makes sense 😅

You couldn’t believe this was happening…

What had gone so wrong for the world of Nevada for it to end up like this?

After all your guidance, you still managed to screw up this badly. At first, it was with Deimos’s death, then Hank’s magnification and mutation, then Tricky acquiring the Keystone Fragment and improbability drives, and now…hell runs amok in Nevada.

Around your bruised and battered form lies your friends and allies. Each injured and near death as the fire of hell roars around you all. You look at the one that you used to call your friend too…Tricky.

Now demonic and mutated beyond recognition, with the artifacts and the power of the Auditor inside of his very being, he looks at you as if he doesn’t recognize you. The madness now runs so deep within him that his mind no longer operates properly.

He merely wants to kill you all…and he was slowly succeeding.

You pant and hold your injured arm, staring the demonic form of Tricky down as your remaining friends lay behind you. The only thing stopping Tricky from finishing them all off…is you standing between him and them, your iridescent strings binding his form.

You were already injured, and despite your strings barely holding the demonic entity back, you still stand before him in defiance. Protecting those that you have come to hold dear.

Your mind races as the skeletal demon tugs and snaps at the strings that bind him, desperate to get free so that he may finish the job.

What can you do to stop this…this…this madness?

The world of Nevada was lost to the growing hellfires…and in the deepest parts of your bones, you can feel those in Nevada suffering. Some of the remaining living grunts even pray to you as they wish and cry out to be saved by someone…anyone.

All their pain…all their deaths…their last dying breaths…you can feel them all. You are in as much pain as the rest of the world…and Tricky, or what USED to be Tricky, needed to be stopped before he consumed the world.

You were always praised as a god by the local populace of Nevada. But as you stand here before the corrupted form of Tricky…you doubted that you deserved such a title.

How can you be a god…and not save anyone from this horrible calamity?

You could barely even save anyone…you failed Deimos.

You failed Nevada, you failed Tricky, and even the remaining of your own friends. You were a failure and you were alone on the cusp of deciding the fate for the entirety of Nevada.

But you couldn’t fail…only when you give up would Nevada truly be lost.

There had to be something you could do to combat this chaos…to restore order.

So as you endure the pain and the burning fires around you, you search for a way to fix things. Going through all your codes and your consoles, you search as quickly as you could…and you find something.

‘Hard Reset’.

The red string of code glows in warning as you read the title again and again.

That’s right…you could call to the hands of time…to turn back the clock and reset everything back to the way it was…whenever. Back to a simpler time before the madness grew to such straits. Before you lost Deimos, before Hank became a mag, before Tricky was lost to insanity, and before Nevada began to burn.

You always reset when you lost your vessels before…you could do it again.

You select the code in your console and a bright warning suddenly flashes up in your UI.

‘WARNING! Hard Resets results in the total erasure of save data and backups! Upon resetting, all progress will be lost and all values reset back to zero! Following user data will be deleted upon reset! Do you wish to continue? Y/N’

You take a moment to pause as the warning blinks brightly, obviously detailing the warning of triggering it. You take a second to reflect on your decision.

That’s right…a hard reset erases everything. Memories, unlockables, missions, choices, and achievements…and it may even erase you from existence.

All your friends will forget you. All the memories you made together will no longer exist. You weren’t even sure if you were going to make it out of this…but what else could you do?

Tricky was too powerful…and their world was burning.

Would you risk your own existence if it meant that your friends could live again? Would you give everything for Nevada, a place that wasn’t even your home dimension? Did you love them all that much?

You merely let out a slight huff of a laugh.

Of course you did.

You love all of your vessels. If that meant that you can give them another chance to live again and find a happier ending…you would gladly give them that chance. Even if it meant that you would no longer be a part of their lives. Even if it meant you would no longer be a part of Nevada.

Without a second more of hesitation, you select the code and enter ‘Y’ into the console.

The world suddenly blinks red and you feel yourself beginning to glow. The code that you selected bursting from your body, strand after strand, each ascending into the sky.

You hear someone call out for you and you turn to look over your shoulder.

Seeing 2B painfully trying to pick himself up as the others try to do the same. Despite their grave injuries, they still attempt to stand as they fumble and fall over.

The light pouring from your chest continues to build in intensity as your body begins to destabilize, the other looking on in horror as Tricky hisses at the intense light that radiates from your body.

“What did you do?! What’s going on?!?” You hear 2B shout out to you.

You could only smile and try to hold back tears as your body begins to burn and more codes are executed from your glitching console.

“Fixing Nevada.” You say simply.

“What?! What do you mean?!! Player, what’s happening to you??” 2B continues to yell from behind you as your strings all become white hot and start to burn into Tricky, causing him to roar in pain.

“I…I’m fixing Nevada. I’m going to give you all another chance.” You explain, ignoring how the burning in your chest intensifies as the light gets brighter and brighter.

“I’m doing my duty as a ‘god’. I’m answering the prayers of Nevadeans. I’m saving the world. But…I won’t be there to celebrate with you all. Not in body…and not in memory.” You continue.

“What the fuck?? What…what’s going on??” Sanford grunts out from his place nearby as 2B continues to try and stand, his weak legs barely holding him up.

“Player! Stop! We can defeat Tricky, just let us get back up! Instantheal us!” 2B cries out, almost like he was losing his composure.

“I’m sorry, 2B. But Nevada is lost. If we did defeat Tricky…the world would be nothing but ash. I have to do this. I’m going to make this all seem like it’s just some horrible dream.”

You look over your shoulder towards your collapsed vessels. Tears freely running down your face as you give them a broken smile and try your best not to sob.

“Don’t worry. It’s all going to be okay. I promise. Deimos will be here, Hank will be himself, Tricky will be back to his own brand of normal, and Nevada will be okay. Even if you forget me…I won’t forget you all.”

You allow your tears to freely fall as the burning in your chest grows unbearable.

“I love you all and thank you for such a memorable adventure. I’ll do better next time.”

You see all your vessels struggle to get off the ground as they try to approach you, despite the bright light that is now breaking through your form.

“Player, no! Wait!”

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing!?”

“Stop!”

You hear them all say, but your progress bar suddenly fills and you could only wave at them in a sorrowful way as the light consumes your body.

“GoodbyeeeeeeaaaaAAAAAGGGHAAAAAHH!!” You scream as your farewell changes into a burning shrill wail as the light completely consumes your body and begins to engulf all that surrounds you.

Causing all the remaining vessels to wince and flinch at the intense heat and Tricky to roar as he melts from the volume of light that burns into his body.

The light continues to expand, slowly taking in all of Nevada as the world falls apart. Consuming every last inch of the world into a pristine white glowing void.

Then there’s the sudden echoing sound of something shattering that resonates throughout the entirety of the white void…

And then 2B wakes up.

He sits up in a thick layer of cold sweat, looking around himself and finding a familiar room laid out before him. He lets out a groan as he sits up on a familiar lumpy couch, his head having a massive headache for some reason.

He hears the sound of movement ringing throughout the base which piques his interest.

He gets up and leaves his messy and dingy room behind as he walks into the living area of their make-shift temporary base.

In the room, he sees Hank sitting on the couch watching Slaughter Time, Sanford messing about in the kitchen area, and Deimos polishing up their weapons and guns. For some reason…2B felt a sense of relief come over him when he laid eyes on Deimos.

Maybe it was from that bad dream he had? What was that dream about again…he was…somewhere. There was something very bad going on…and then there was light.

He remembers reaching for someone…but he doesn’t remember who.

2B feels his head hurt again as he tries to think about what happened, but nothing comes to mind. No matter how hard he tries to tell himself.

And the more he stared at the other three in the living room…the more off something made him feel. Like…he was pretty sure that this was his entire team. Who else could he be missing?

Wasn’t there always just three coworkers?

The frustration and confusion he was feeling only seemed to make him upset.

So, he ignores the other three grunts and walks into the area that served as his research station. Sitting down and typing entries on his computers and tablets. Trying to see where he left off from work…but something notable catches his eye.

Something that invokes a feeling of deja vu.

There was an entry that was left open on his screen…and it seemed to be talking about a powerful being that the Auditor was getting into contact with called ‘The Player’.

Player….Player….Player…

Why…

Why did that sound so familiar…?

And why doesn’t he remember typing this entry?

Something was wrong.

A brief look at Immortality and the “Princes” in ToG-

Immortality is kinda an interesting beast in this world, because everyone is aware that it exists, but few people are aware of what exactly it entails or how to obtain it. (Up until Enryu, everyone believed that the Administrators were immortal, but he quickly disproved that.)

The Ten Family Heads and Zahard attained immortality when they reached the highest available Floor, but not because of any special power or blood of theirs, but because they made contracts with the Administrators to become so. Citizens of the Tower simply “do not have the authority” to hurt or kill them. (As a side note, it’s mentioned by Garam that Arlene is also under such a contract, which is why she could not die, but apparently V was not, for some reason. So unless leaving the Tower removed that protection, she should still be alive out there somewhere.) This isn’t common knowledge. Wangnan got ahold of this information somehow, and its discussed again on the Floor of Death, but most people don’t know the nature of the Heads’ immortality.

(Though I am curious about the relation of these contracts to the Irregulars. The reason why Bam is believed to be able to kill the king is because contracts made in the Tower inherently do not apply to people from outside the Tower. This might be because they're a kind od spell, which also doesn’t work. But what about a being who’s immortality was not based on a contract? What then?)

But how does this tie in the ‘princes’ and are they actually immortal too? Or why?

The first thing is that I’m mostly using ‘prince’ as a shorthand for the three that we’ve seen, since we don’t actually know if that title applies to all of them. Though we’ve seen Karaka with a ring, the only character to ever be referred to by that title is Wangnan; if or how that title is shared is unknown.

-I’ll start with the Boss, since we know the least about him, so he’ll be the easiest the cover: The big thing that sets him apart immediately is that he is old. He’s from the Age of Genesis, so he’s an upwards of thousands of years old, an age range comparable to Jinsung and Dowon, if not older. He comes and goes wherever he pleases and has the resources to sneak into heavily protected places with no issue at all, and is apparently charming enough to instantly convince Maschenny of all people to change her plans to accommodate him. The Boss has a strange manner of speaking, alternating “I” and “we” when referring to himself, possibly hinting at a fractured sense of self? (He claims that he himself is unclear who he is.) -But oh, what is that on his face? Could it be a scar? (it looks like one anyway) Maybe despite the Boss's power, age, and influence, he lacks Wangnan's seamless healing abilities? (tick one little hint down on the possibly-not-immortal checklist.) Something to think about.

-Next is Karaka, the tin man with a bone to pick. Of the three, he is easily the one with the clearest goals, self-awareness, and understanding of the situation (and it made him mad). Although we don't really know how old he is, I'd estimate him somewhere around several thousand years old (1-2 maybe); old for a fresh High Ranker, but an absolute baby for a Slayer. Funnily enough, we have enough information about Karaka's abilities to have a clear answer as to whether he's immortal or not. The answer: he's not! Karaka is durable to an insane degree, and has the ability to reset himself to a previous state when he's in danger, which is a kind of practical immortality. But a lot of this can be attributed to his spelled armor, which was given to him specifically to preserve his life, and Jinsung certainly worried over that exact thing. Not only that, but Karaka has specifically separated his own heart into his World of Darkness hammerspace to protect his one weak spot. I firmly believe that if someone was able to break into that space and target his heart directly, they might be able to actually kill him for real, though that'd be insanely difficult to do (supposedly only Family Heads and Administrators have the power to get in without his permission (potentially a setup to someone much stronger than him actually testing that protection...)). So Karaka's regenerative armor abilities and durability allow him to mimic immortality, but he isn't actually so.

And lastly, the boy with the heart, Wangnan. He's probably the easiest case to argue for the immortal angle, and why the theory that says so is so believable. After all, unlike Karaka, Wangnan does not have any form of protection preventing people from attacking his relatively vulnerable parts and causing major damage to him, but continues to heal from absolutely fatal injuries repeatedly anyway. To Ehwa immolating him in his first appearance to Cassano absolutely destroying him on the Hell Train. (Though it does seem that he heals from fatal injuries noticeably faster than serious non-fatal injuries: i.e. Beta exploding his heart vs Hoaquin nearly taking his hand off. His body working harder to preserve him in those cases?) Worth noting though is that, if Wangnan is immortal, he does not seem to be aware of it at all: he knows and refers to himself as "hard to kill" but also shows that he does think he can die and fears that possibility, especially on the 20th Floor. (This is probably because he keeps suppressing his memories; Wangnan doesn't really want to know why this keeps happening to him.) As mentioned before, he is the only one explicitly referred to as a 'prince.' We don't know what this means. We also don't know why Wangnan is the only one of his kind depicted with horns, and if that has any ties to this ability, or where this ability even came from.

There is so much here about them that we've yet to find out.

Egghead: Opposing Force

Have I ever mentioned how much I love the Half-Life series? Come to think of it, HL2 does kinda play with the Urashima Taro setup for Gordon Freeman a lot like the future-flung five doesn't it? It's a common enough starting point. But I love how they do the first one. Half-Life shows you the main story of the hero of the Black Mesa Incident then you get two more games, Opposing Force and Blue Shift that put you in an alternate POV. I've always loved stuff like this, and the serious potential for it stapled to a great character like fair Okiku is a big reason I started to fall for Wano harder than most One Piece arcs. I really didn't think we were gonna top Whole Cake...

I'm rambling. Because unless you're new here you probably know how I feel about this chapter and I don't want to just wave the big finale around unguarded for spoiler purposes. Welp, we all ready?

Here we go! Obviously this is what caught my eye the most. A new challenger appears. We don't have a lot to go on yet but at least a bit. First off the idea they made their entry saving innocents despite potentially giving up some of the element of surprise. The evacuees have had a little time to slip away so I don't know how much the Blackbeard ship last night makes sense but theoretically he or Shanks could have started moving this way. One makes a lot more sense to do a good deed than the other. But of course we're keeping our fingers crossed for an idea that I've been on one about for 25 chapters now. It's the Fleet. I've heard the other ideas, they don't beat the meat the Fleet brings to the table here.

It's always made sense with where we're at in the story. Gain them in Dressrosa, see the might of that operation in WCI, outsource managing it but build a comparable force in Wano, subvert Sabaody through it all coming together. We've trickled them in through these cutaway segments not to mention using little bits to get them invested in the story since the tail end of Totland not to mention their own cover serial. It's a perfect setup, show them wrecking face then flash back to the night before to show how it was set up. Doing it that way means it's also a great opportunity to show someone we didn't know was involved has been around the whole time. Just. Like. Ginny.

Gets me to the title. The Peak of Stupidity. Nice echo of G5 being Luffy's peak and the last Wano opening. Y'all know my extension and how perfect him being trapped outside the Labophase is for moving into something like that is. Especially when he's back at the foodmotron where Bonney's story really took off and took over, notably leading into the scrap heap where we find Robonosuke. As far as the title goes, yeah it's a line from Saturn but it tracks with potentially breaking us away from the peak of stupidity of getting involved in this big mess in the first place. Doubly so if that does come from a nagging figure that may or may not have bailed them out with the end of this chapter.

We've talked about this idea of breaking away from this story we really have nothing to do with. The Straw Hats already know the part of Kuma's story that pertains to them but seeing extra sides of Kuma's life was important to us. Vegapunk just invited himself into their story a lot like a certain son of Kaido. It's not just how suddenly everyone is shooting ahead into very sensible, level-headed objectives all of a sudden. Getting Luffy in this nice little solo "reset" spot where Bonney's story took off right as the Opposing Force emerges? Admittedly it could go a lot of ways but there's one cool thing I noticed:

Think it says a lot about the situation Robin's so calm during a Buster Call. Usopp is always freaking out about something, and sure Robin's grown a lot but the mere idea of a Buster Call once rattled her. That's the part of this that really makes me wonder if deep down they know someone has a steady hand on all this already. Especially when everyone is moving so much more smartly all of a sudden. What even happened to Robin in the first place is something we still need to learn about last night. She was the one heading straight to York without knowing she was the traitor yet. But this is that little extra nugget beyond the big obvious way everything I've wondered is falling into place. The thing that makes me think this isn't going to be a surprise to the Straw Hats. On top of the "saving innocents" angle I mean.

Well, that and...

"With your feet on the air and your head on the ground..."

Am I the only one getting a mild Fight Club vibe out of Vegapunk here? Maybe a stretch but this scene sure isn't. I love it, coming to the realization you have a hand in all of this as your future land crumbles. Fits the way I've always seen him as somewhat an extension of Oden all to well. Sanji & Franky are involved trying to evacuate of course, but seeing the collapse around most of the Straw Hats shaping up and getting ready to take advantage of the Opposing Force's arrival? Beautiful.

Capturing the ambience of Zoombini's Logical Journey

This edutainment title takes Zoombini crews through a beautiful, diverse wilderness.

Extracting sounds

Original has assets in MHK ("Mohawk"?). We can extract using ScummVM tools, and then using this TXTH:

codec = PCM8_U sample_rate = 11025 channels = 1 interleave = 0 start_offset = 40 num_samples = data_size loop_flag = auto

Alternatively we can import raw data into Audacity using similar settings. You can also try extracting via QuickBMS, using Aluigi's Mohawk script.

The 2015 remake of this game, simply titled "Zoombinis", uses the same audio assets. Since it's built on Unity, it is easy to extract this versions AudioClips using a tool like Unity Asset Studio. This also gives us a chance to see file names of our ambient assets and consequently check for any errors.

Idle chatter

If you wait at a puzzle for too long the Zoombinis get restless and talk more. Eventually it becomes a gale of chatter. Clicking on one of them interrupts and resets this. Indeed this chatter pauses as long as we have a Zoombini selected, so we can use this to mute them.

Background graphics

extract_mohawk gives us BMP files but they can't be opened as-is. Presumably it's possible to open them using the ScummVM source code: https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/blob/master/engines/mohawk/bitmap.cpp.

Disco Elysium blogging (possible spoiler warning):

So, I started it today. Mechanically, I'm still getting used to it; it definitely feels designed to play on PC and some of the console UI is a little non-intuitive, at least for me, but that's a relatively small complaint. I'll figure it out.

But like... as interesting as some of the mechanics are, this is pretty clearly not a mechanics-oriented experience. This is a story game. All I knew about the story coming in, other than like, seeing shittons of fanart of Kim Kitsuragi, is that "you are an amnesiac detective who has to solve a murder."

I'm only a couple hours in, so far. I managed to get myself downstairs, went and saw the body, checked up on some footprints, found the toolshed, and have wandered outside around the street a bit, talked to some people, opened up the trash container and got in there, etc. But like... okay, there's a lot going on already. Some early stray thoughts:

People: Cuno sucks, but I feel like there's a reason for that. I can't help but feel he's going to prove important. Apparently Lena is married to a cryptozoologist? So like... is that a real job in this world, or what? The truck driving guy (whose name I forget)... there's something that seems off about him. What has me most curious, so far, outside the murder itself, is the whole bookstore curse thing. I didn't rip open the curtain. Maybe I should have? I can see that going badly, though. As I understand it, this is definitely not a "you should exhaust all dialogue options" kind of game.

So, year-wise, it's "'51." Based on the level of technology, this seems to be probably 2051, maybe 2151? That is, assuming real-world standards/calendars apply, and there hasn't been some kind of technological reset. But it does seem explicitly connected to the real world--they've made references to real places (the hole in the fence a Franconigerian cavalry could fit through). But the geography and recent history of where we are is unfamiliar so... what does that mean? They keep referencing "the Occident" as somewhere far away, so… Also, are we in like, a post-apocalyptic situation here? Alternate history? Is it even worth trying to place it, re: present geography?

It's remarkable how suspicious I am of everything already. Like, we found the coat up on the roof thing above the toolshed (have not yet been able to make the jump down to it) and I'm like... shit, was I involved in this somehow? And then, it's like "Kim was awful quick to suggest that's my coat... is he trying to set me up?" Like I don't actually suspect him at this time (me, I'm less sure about), but I feel like anything could happen, so I'm really intrigued. This hooks you pretty quick.

What's with the references to disco? There've been a few now, and like, it's in the fucking title, so it's got to mean something pretty important. I'm really curious about that cos it seems so left-field. And in keeping with the overall wryness of the tone. There are some amazing lines in this thing.
