Do you think Alfred is insecure about being young? Like I know that there’s countries younger or closer to age to Alfred, but the people Alfred hangs out with the most, has more economic ties, and has military alliances with are way older than Alfred (ex literally all of Europe and Asia). So I was wondering if you think Alfred, being always around people with way more experience than him, feels insecure about being so young and ‘inexperienced’ maybe that’s why he wears glasseS

Interesting question! As I see it, yes and no. 

Yes—in the 18th century, when he was much younger, and rebelling against Arthur. Going hat in hand to the other Old World empires and nations like Francis and Antonio for money was a pretty intimidating experience. So it was with Gilbert, coming to whip his ass into shape in Valley Forge. Even with other nations where he wasn't asking for major favours to fund his rebellion but more like 'hey recognise me? please? can my ships come to your ports?' like Morocco or Yao, during the Old China Trade (uhhhhh ive been banned from all the usual trading posts all across my father's empire...and I heard you guys like otter pelt and ginseng?).

No, because from the 19th century onwards, he's very much growing into a world power. I see Alfred as being quite a zealous idealist who sees potential for improving the world (not always in the best way, but from his POV it is), and this is the period where his mindset is increasingly one of brazen, youthful self-confidence. To him, his age is an asset. He's casting a pretty jaundiced eye on the Old World as a whole—perceiving them as being full of religious feuds, outdated monarchies and straitjacketed by nonsensical traditions: they’re ossified fucks who ought to realise the glory of republican civilisation and everything else he's got grand ideas about. Like, one contrast is really how much more intimidated I see him being going to China during the Old China Trade in the late 1700s—versus the brazen gunboat diplomacy of the Perry expedition to Japan in 1853. Like, the contrast with how the Americans behaved themselves when they had no navy and their ships were so small the Chinese traders thought they were tenders from larger vessels and not ocean going ships (lmao) and the Perry expedition is huge. 18th century Alfred would’ve been more intimidated around a nation who beheaded Kublai Khan’s emissaries and fought in more battles long before he was born—19th century Alfred isn’t. 

And even less so in the 20th century—especially during WWII. There’s no victory unless he puts his thumb on the scale, and even Sir Lord Arthur Kirkland is openly begging for it. If people had any remaining thought of him as the young, ambitious crown prince somewhat walking in the shadow of his father, all that is gone in WWII. He steals the fire of the gods and literally makes it shine brighter than a thousand suns in all its terror and awe. Other nations can get under his skin, especially in the dynamics of a rivalry (Arthur, in their power struggle over influence, Kiku, as a duelling Pacific empire in the late 1800s—1945 and then also Ivan). But older Alfred is far less likely to be insecure solely on account of them being older than him. It’s more if he perceives they’re challenging his dominance and hegemony—or if they’re questioning his idealism and principles. Like Antonio at the end of the Spanish-American War—oh, you really are your father’s son. I can see moments of vulnerability where his youth and inexperience shines through (such as the American Civil War), but older Alfred’s insecurities tend to dig on faultlines regarding: challenges to his hegemony and principles because unlike Lord Father (tm), I think he’s far more of an idealist. He wants to be great and good, but greatness often is in direct conflict with the latter.

(I'm suddenly reminded of the last two episodes of Gravity Falls. It never ceases to amuse me that Alex Hirsch was told he couldn't do all kinds of totally innocent things, but he could have, well, the shit in the last two episodes. I remember telling my then-boyfriend that the intro of those last episodes had shots that looks like actual nightmares I've had)

Oh also the flailing disembodied hands remind me of some of the early episodes about the Cluster in Steven Universe. Remember Garnet finding some of the early fusion experiments made with broken bits of gems?

And that's what messed up Shadow Weaver's face, and she throws a fit at everyone and calls them "weak" and uhhh murders at least one of them?

face-touching! the only way she's able to show any affection at all...but only ever to manipulate people in her charge. anyway she disappears after that.

Catra is not going to get a satisfying answer. One of the reasons it was a relief when my dad died was that I could let go of ever having any hope of him explaining to any kind of satisfaction why he did what he did. (He did apologize, once; in the most manipulative and self-serving way possible, when I was 35--at the time I thought maybe it meant something, but eventually I realized he'd actually made things worse, because he'd taken away any belief I might've clung to that he didn't know any better at the time.)

In any case, Shadow Weaver's answer is basically "You're just like me, and my life was hard, so why should yours be easy?" Like that old line about how people who suffer through hard things have one of two reactions: Either "why shouldn't you also suffer, you're not better than me," and "nobody should have to suffer like I did."

I understand Catra so much. You still want that love. You can't not. You know you won't get it, not the way you need it, and you settle for a facsimile.

And then we go back in time to see the arrival of baby!Adora, like as an actual infant. They don't say where she got her.

Hordak: "I arrived too late. I found something but it's useless. Put it with the other infants in the infirmary."

Shadow Weaver: hmmm that's one powerful baby. Hordak: ugh, weirdo. You can have it. But ffs it's being noisy take it somewhere else.

Shadow Weaver's just like: oh sweet I get to start from scratch with this one.

Anyway under her tray of food that Catra brought her was her sorcerer's guild...thing. That she asked for earlier in the episode. Which means Catra did bring it to her.

And Shadow Weaver's gone.

This explains part of why Catra gets worse for the next like two seasons. She tried to extend a kindness to Shadow Weaver--keeping her from being sent to Beast Island, giving her the trinket thing, offering to work together since Shadow Weaver thinks they have so much in common, right? But it bites her in the ass so bad.

So why should she be kind to anyone? When has anyone been kind to her? When has Catra being kind to anyone ever improved her life or made it easier?

But yeah the trinket had some kinda magic dust in it and Shadow Weaver escaped, and Catra had a (very understandable) meltdown about it.

Back in Bright Moon, the Best Friends Squad is using the moon alignment to get a clearer signal on Bow's track pad: "Serenia. Portal. Mara." AAAAND end of episode.

"Ink, where are you? Senkai you said you sent the message to her and her team already didn't you?" Vanity, Ink's father and the main royal head of the Vanity house of pride waits upon his throne for his daughter and her fraction. Her friends were also royal princes or princesses of their own house but knowing much, he needed to speak to them. However, he gets the feeling she went off somewhere in another area of the demon world to have fun or have parties. Again.

"Yes, she got the message a while ago and will be here in a moment Lord Vanity." Senkai looks knowing he did summon for her but he knew how she was. Even when it came to parties and having fun. He sighed pinching the bridge of his nose but he knew this was important and it was drawing close to that time.

"I'm sure she and her friends will arrive shortly." he said.

"......"

Just as he said that, the main doors open showing a group of young adults walk in. The two look seeing them, noticing a familiar young woman who was happily drinking some Coke soda. It seems Vanity 'Ink' Vanguard and her friends has finally arrived.

"I told you we would make it Ink. Just had to take a short cut." Ironia 'Rust' Knight said happily.

"I know! I thought we would be late for something but I guess not. I wonder what Vanity wishes to speak to me about though-"

"VAN INK THE DRAGON!"

"!?!" The DBT winces from the familiar shout to look up seeing Vanity who was crossing his arms and tapping his foot. It seems they were really late to make them sweatdrop.

"Uhhhhh..."

"Hello Ink and everyone else-"

"Your late." Vanity said to his daughter who laughed nervously seeing she upset her dad. Again.

"Ummmm, I can explain! I was uhhhhh..taking down some bad guys that was after our kingdom and all. You know how it is.." she said laughing but Vanity looks to her only to bonk her on the head. "OW, THAT HURTS!!!!"

"You were NOT I know you and I know you been causing trouble and doing something stupid again. I bet you forgot why I summoned you here didn't you?!"

"I didn't! You called because you wanted to talk about something right?" She rubs the bump on her head but Vanity groans feeling a headache.

"And what was it?" he said.

"...................I forgot."

He, with everyone else, falls to the ground twitching but Ink blinks to see that. Seems like she did. Vanity stood up but he looks to his daughter.

"Ink, it's been a few months since you all started learning to take over the human world THEN learning to rule over the humans to make them fellow followers. YOU as other demons that is known, were to give a status report and update following who you got to be alliance with. Remember? And and spreading the word of gaining new followers for the house!" he said.

"..Ohhhhhhhhh...yeah, I know that!" she said happy.

"Then have you?" he said with arms crossed.

"We made some! I did and the others did too for our own kingdoms and stuff in the demon world like you told me!" she said.

"She's right Lord Vanity. We were already informed by our own devils about this. We have been gathering and making new allies that helps with growing with us. Even learning of the human world too." Hellmare said quietly to him as Vanity looks to her then at Ink.

"I see....."

"Yeah, they told us about it in a meeting way back but we are still finding more and more followers, other demon youth royals in the demon world are willing to help us and so on. I say we are doing pretty good." Navarro said with arms crossed.

"..Hmm. Well, It's good to hear your all doing that well." Vanity said seeing the DBT nod. "However.." This made them blink. "You still need to work on some other things so we have a thing to explain." he said.

"And that is?" Ophelia said as Vanity sighed.

"Well....."

A few moments later, after he explains it to the group some silence was heard. Maybe they would understand the situation so things would go clear. However, a loud shout suddenly came from Vanity's throne room.

"MARRIAGE!? O.O"

Yeah, Vanity could see some panic but Ink was silent. Seems Vanity was spoken to about this with the other devils since they seen the progress of what is going on, time for a next step.

"You all heard me. I know you all have been doing well in that but also has done much. However, you all are up to that point of finding someone to wed in order to increase the alliances in your kingdoms. If you were to marry, you can make a more stronger alliance and allies, along with having someone to rule with you." Vanity said seeing the DBT silent now.

"Hold on! I thought you said we had more time and were doing this on our own." Shdwkyz said but Vanity sighed.

"Yeah, you didn't say this was something to be done early!" Fosh said nervous as well.

"If you all remember, I know and we did tell you that. Your devils told you this when you were being trained and taught of taking over the human world. However, this is also mainly for the devil houses you represent. Even if your powerful young men and women that serves and rule the lands as demons in your own kingdom here, sometimes you need to find help in order to become stronger when you head into the human world too so you can rule it."

"......"

"Back in my time, we didn't have much of a choice with who we married but most of our mates understood us so we were fine with it. Most, we didn't find any but we still grew our alliances back then."

"Okay, so we shouldn't need to marry right?" Ophelia said nervous.

"That was in the past and it was not as serious. But in this time now, it is. Just be lucky it might not come to arranged marriages. However, it won't happen unless it's needed. From your alliances, I'm sure you can think of someone to call a king or queen with you to represent your houses in the future. All I ask is to just listen to me. You still conquer your sections/kingdoms in the demon world as normal but in time you will have to think about that when going to the human world to take over it. That's coming and you know that!" he said.

"But that sucks though! DX Why now!? I don't wanna marry just yet! I don't have the time to worry about that!"Ink argues only for Vanity to argue back.

"YOU DON'T HAVE THAT MUCH OF A CHOICE INK AND KNOWING YOU, YOUR HARDHEADED TO EVEN LISTEN TO ME WHEN IT COMES TO THAT!" he shouted as the DBT blinks at the same time.

"THAT'S NOT FAIR! MARRIAGE IS WEIRD AND I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT!!! I LIVE AND WANT ADVENTURE BEFORE THAT!!!" she points at him comical while the DBT sighed.

"DON'T ARGUE WITH ME ON THIS! YOU KNOW THIS WILL BRING ANOTHER POWERFUL HOUSE ALLIANCE WITH US! THIS GOES FOR ALL THE KINGDOMS IN THE DEMON WORLD SO WHEN YOU TAKE OVER THE HUMAN WORLD YOU CAN DO THAT TOO AND GETTING MARRIED IS THE ONE STEP TOWARDS THAT!!" he shouted.

"MARRIAGE IS DUMB DX! I'LL NEVER GET MARRIED! NEVER!!!! YOU CAN NEVER MAKE ME GET MARRIED! NEVER!!"

"DON'T YOU RAISE YOUR VOICE AT ME, YOUNG LADY!"

"I'M A GROWN WOMAN! I CAN MAKE MY OWN CHOICES DAD!!" she and him argue growling at one another. Well, for a father and daughter moment that is.

"Oh I'm sure it's not that bad, Ink. Marriage isn't scary."Hellmare said smiling.

"BUT I DON'T WANNA!!!!"

"Seriously? Tch, well, too bad. You all will be in the future so unless you want your spouse picked for you, think of who you would want to marry in the future because sooner or later it's going to lead to arrange marriages. If you don't believe me, speak to your devils and they will tell you the same thing. Are we clear?" he said.

"Yes...." The DBT said but Ink grumbles not saying a word.

"Ink.." Vanity warns but she groans upset.

Ugghhhhh "Fine..."

"Good. Now, you are all off to go. Head back to your kingdom later today and train to learn more as you go. And think about what I said." he said seeing the DBT turning to leave even Ink to get some thought about it from her own house.

"I was not expecting that. How in the world didn't our devils tell us about that?" Maggie said.

"I don't know but it seems a bit of a pain." Oblivion said but the others sighed.

"Well, I'm sure the others were told of this too so it's nothing too serious. For now, lets just head back home." Jaron said as they did while Ink was upset along the way. When they were gone, Vanity sighed feeling a headache.

"Lord Vanity?" Senkai said.

"Get me a ale and some food..." he said but some did that.

"I'm sure everything will be fine sire. They will get at least someone.." he said.

"And that what worries me. However, I'm sure they will figure it out....I hope." he grumbles knowing the DBT along with the others had a long way to go. Oh boy.

Tagged by @aeide​ like....29 days ago. Cool. A lot of stuff happened lately and also I had to think about this and remake the list at least 7 (now 9) times. So. This is probably not true but it has old favorites and current bias and I’ve put far too much thought into this. Under cut because of gifs causing loading/flashing. Uhhhhh. I feel weird about tagging this, since it’s been so long. I can’t remember who has done it and who hasn’t. Gonna tag folks who I don’t remember seeing. 1) The Hours

It has music by Philip Glass! Meryl Streep plays a queer woman and that was important to me as a teenager. It’s very sad but it is always there for me when I feel bleak. It’s just a part of my psyche and I can’t really explain it at this point.

2)  Lord of the Rings 2: The Two Towers (Extended Version)

Every Thursday for about 8 years the closest group of cousins and I would watch a movie while we had our piano lessons and most of those years we just watched LOTR 2 and 3 extended versions. Every Thursday. For about 8 years. 2/4 people (including me) are most likely autistic, yes. 2/4 (not including me) can play the piano. We are very annoying about LOTR. Anyways, look! It’s Haldir! The first man I loved to die of a weapon through the head. Yeah. I love that guy. Also, this film has great french horn!

3) Pride and Prejudice (2005)

I cannot express how much I love this movie. I cannot explain all the things about it I love. I cannot. Music is by Dario Marianelli (I can play to the second page of the score to “Living Sculptures of Pemberly” on piano. It only took 5 years), Directed by Joe Wright, Kiera Knightley stars as Elizabeth Bennett. I adore the dresses, the hair, the casting, the music, the fact that Simon Wood’s hair continued growing red after filming, the statues in Pemberly, the tiling on the floors in Pemberly, the way Mary plays the piano, Georgiana, Darcy’s sideburns, the HAND FLEX, the weird pig scene, The flower Tom Hollander holds, the nod to Henry Purcell, ect. 4) Anna Karenina (2012)

Dario, Joe, Kiera, and a train walk into a movie. Do not get me started.

5) The Parent Trap (1998)

I saw this as a kid and made my mom watch it with me over and over and over again. She didn’t mind. She thinks she’s like Chessy, but she’s not. She doesn’t cook, for one. And she doesn’t wear a denim shirt. I do though. We still quote this to each other. Formative.

6) A Place Promised in Our Early Days

An earlier Makoto Shinkai movie. The plot is confusing and boring if I’m honest. The background animations are breathtaking. If you like anime but also like  realism in art, I’d highly recommend any Makoto Shinkai movie for visuals.

7) The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

Do you ever just want to eat a sandwich and listen to old italian music and watch your enemy best friend and lover drown? No? huh. Amazing soundtrack! Spy drama! COSTUMING. It makes me laugh! Henry Cavill! Solo/Kuryakin/Teller should be canon. I was pretty upset about the whole Armie Hammer thing, tbh, because I really wanted a sequel to this. But I’m ok with that not happening.

8) Fly Away Home

The first media I wallowed in. Would rewind to the scene with Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “10,000′s miles” and sit way too close to the screen. When we got it on dvd my life changed. I could just press the button!? I didn’t care about the geese, really. I cared about the deep grief this kid was having. Someone probably should have questioned why I was watching it on repeat and gotten me into therapy a lot earlier. All in all, it’s a pretty movie.

9) A Single Man

I love this movie but I gotta admit I skip around watching it. It’s so depressing, I can’t watch it all at the same time. I like the music a lot, good cello. I love watching Colin Firth be miserable. I like crying with George. I don’t give a shit about Charley (except for her house and dress. Sorry Julianne Moore.) I hate Kenny. I want to live in George’s house. I want to live there. It is the J.W. Schaffer House. It’s a modernist house built in 1949 by John Lautner. I want to lick touch that woodwork. UGH. The glass. UGH. I love it. UGH. It’s such an impractical house. UGH. It’s so dumb. UGh. I want to go lay down on the floor, surrounded by books, in that house. uGH.

10) Underworld

What a dumb movie. Somewhere in my mom’s house is a Windows XP with a folder of photos of Selene that I thought were really cool, for some reason that I couldn’t figure out. That computer also has viruses from badly pirating the movie in 2008. I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen and probably the first R rated movie I snuck. On this list because of the family computer destruction. And the ‘armor’, if you can call it that.

Just a bunch of text below because I feel like rambling, nothing too exciting

Where to start? Just gonna babble a bit

Met with the nice nurse yesterday morning to talk about meds. That sucked. Very offputting and distant. Lots of anxiety and worrying during the appointment and she just either stayed quiet or made me feel bad for not being able to make an appointment she referred me to (which I tried to explain I couldn’t make because I am fucking pooooor and it’s an hour away and life is ridiculous right now but nooooo I blew it so thanks lady). Ugh she’s usually so nice. Maybe I just caught her on a bad day. Anyway, upped my viibryd & now I’m on vistaril instead of buspar.

Therapy appointment yesterday afternoon, which also sucked. God, I just keep feeling like I’m letting people down. It’s like if I don’t come in with concrete improvement each week, I just feel like shit. Yes, I’ve been fucking lazy. I’ve been fucking depressed and stressed and worried about moving, I hate myself, I feel shitty, and then he just kinda makes me feel worse about myself. I know that wasn’t his intention, I know he’s just trying to push me because lord knows if I don’t get pushed I’ll just stay a lump forever, but still, it’s left me with a shit mood since leaving his office. Ugh… but I still dig the guy, even if I feel like I’m “failing” therapy.

I have to be out of this place by next Wednesday 😬 and I honestly haven’t even packed anything yet… which is doubly, triply, dozensly bad because turns out family is coming to help move boxes TOMORROW! Ugggghhhh so I’m going to spend the day packing.

my response to it hinges entirely on a question of author vs. character.

if this is solely a character’s point of view, then i find it eminently believable. this is a thing anakin might say.  it demonstrates yet again anakin’s fundamental misunderstanding of everything he’s ever been taught, but it’s very much a believable misunderstanding for him to operate under.

if this character bit is supported and endorsed by the author - which i suspect is the case, given that this is the angle i see the majority of star wars authors and fans taking - then that’s a different thing.

i feel like i’ve written variations on this post several times before, but surprisingly enough i am still staunchly opposed to virtually every interpretation of the jedi i have ever read, including wild space (shocking, i know, what can i do). it’s frustrating to me that the Prevailing Opinions out there about the Jedi Order are virtually all assumptions, not facts, and that these assumptions have for some reason been accepted as the only possible truth, the only possible extrapolation from canon, when in fact it is just as reasonable, just as textually-supported, and, i would argue, more realistic for us to extrapolate and make inferences supporting a different conclusion.

anakin’s interpretation of the jedi order in the quote above represents the Prevailing Opinion: “the jedi are wrong.  love doesn’t weaken us.”  this interpretation, in turn, relies on an assumption: “the jedi think love weakens us.” however, contrary to popular belief, the statement "the jedi think love weakens us” IS in fact exactly what i said it is: an ASSUMPTION.  

a presumption, i might even say, and one that i don’t personally feel is particularly well-supported by canon.  even anakin himself, when teased by padme, shows that he’s been taught enough jedi philosophy to know that “love” is more complicated than “love/emotions = bad!” and that “love” and “attachment” are not the same thing.

Padme: Are you allowed to love? I thought that was forbidden for a Jedi.

Anakin: Attachment is forbidden.  Possession is forbidden. Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is central to a Jedi's life.  So, you might say that we are encouraged to love.

which is still something of a rudimentary explanation, less nuanced than what an older knight or master might give you, but it absolutely indicates a deeper philosophical understanding of jedi pillars than what people usually credit anakin for knowing or obi-wan for teaching.

obi-wan says in ANH that the jedi knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy for “over a thousand generations.”  now, even estimating ridiculously low and saying that humans in the star wars universe only ever live to be thirty years old (i don’t know! it’s a dangerous galaxy!), a thousand generations is still thirty thousand years.  that’s…. significantly longer that our society’s entire written history, never mind the lifespan of any one modern-day religion.  

when we have so little canon information about the jedi order, obviously everybody is free to extrapolate about it however they like, but - when you look at things and recognize how truly old the order is - it’s just baffling to me that there is so little attention paid to canon/legends textual evidence of the philosophical nuance of the jedi order, to the near-certain existence, as with any real-world religion, of varying yet equally accepted schools of thought within the jedi order (not schools of thought elevated above the jedi order by some lazy label like ‘grey jedi’), to the idea that the jedi order is OVER A THOUSAND GENERATIONS OLD, and can you honestly not envision the sheer volume of scholarly debate and theological treatises and movements and growth and accumulated history and depth and internal interpretations that this organization necessarily must encompass?  think about any real-world religion today - think about how many different interpretations one religion might have for a single line of holy text, never mind an entire holy book - think of all the non-textual supplementary material that contributes to any philosophy or theology, i.e. the hadith; think about the exegesis that accompanies any religious text; think of the incredible volume of critical thought and literature and liturgy that falls under the umbrella of just one modern-day religion, and can you honestly imagine that the jedi order - which again is tens of THOUSANDS of years older than any of our religions - isn’t bursting at the seams with philosophy and history, with debate and interpretation, with myriad streams of literalist and revisionist schools of thought - ALL equally jedi, and ALL included in a jedi education?  

do we honestly think that the jedi code is five precepts scribbled on a piece of flimsi, and that everybody interprets them the same way?  we know that’s not true.  mace windu tells qui-gon that taking a second padawan is impossible because “the code forbids it,” and i hear that - but nowhere in the familiar ‘there is no emotion’ mantra do we get guidelines for padawan-raising.  that directive has to come from somewhere else.  we KNOW there’s more text.  we KNOW there’s more history.  but somehow we just refuse to extrapolate this knowledge out to its fullest logical extent, which is that the jedi order has a thousand generations’ more history, more text, more commentaries, more scholarly debates on every subject, and that while one tradition for, say, padawan-raising is accepted currently, the one-padawan/one-master convention isn’t just some arbitrary rule.  every structure and every tradition comes with a history, a conversation, and about 200 philosophical treatises, all of which are considered equally Jedi, and all of which are available to be checked out from the Archives.

this is how it would really work: padawans taking exams are tasked with answering questions like ‘explain, with textual evidence, so-and-so’s interpretation of the Fourth Precept, including references to such-and-such’s landmark rebuttal and the modern-day commentaries of X, Y, and Z.”  when masters tell their students that levitating their clothes into the laundry chute is a frivolous application of the Force and thus to be discouraged, certain impudent young scholars *cough obi-wan kenobi cough* troop down to the Archives and return later that night with ten different texts in hand, all of them ruminating on virtue or vice: applications of the force in everyday life, relevant portions circled. padawans taking saber classes are instructed not only in the elements of combat but in philosophical paradigms, and ethical dilemmas - a “real discussion about competing conceptions of the good” (to quote the office, of all things!), as in this excerpt from cloak of deception:

Used to get caught a lot more than he does now

Because of such, Dutch and Hosea don’t really care on the rare occasion they do catch him just because it was pretty common when he was younger

so i think this was supposed to be soft and fluffy but uhhhhh it became a little more angsty??? anyways warning for a general making fun of zuko for having a lisp.

When Zuko got rambling on something he liked- something he was really passionate about- he got a lisp. Well, technically he always had a lisp, but years of speech therapy forced on him by his father meant that in normal conversation, he was able to disguise it. But when he got going on a topic he was passionate about- things like art or putting the more bigoted advisors in their place- or was tired, or upset, or on the rare occasion that he sang, he couldn’t hide it.

Sokka knew that Zuko was insecure about it. He could see why, when the advisors leftover from his father’s rule so clearly hated it. They never hid that they saw it as just another weakness of his, just another imperfection in the boy they hated. He knew Zuko tried to hide his passion and enthusiasm so that no one would hear it. He knew Zuko hated it.

He wished he didn’t, though, because Sokka thought it was... Cute? Endearing? Precious? Whatever he thought it was, when he heard Zuko’s lisp, he couldn’t help but melt. Not because of his voice itself, though that was definitely a factor, but because of what came with it. Zuko got this fire in his eyes when he was ranting, something bright and lively that blazed like a thousand suns. His face would become soften and open (unless he was yelling at advisors, in which case it was stormy and angry and a completely different story), his hands would begin waving around, and he’d just... Slip away from being the Fire Lord for a minute, and become Zuko.

It was those moments that reminded Sokka just how gone for him he was.

Today was no exception- they were walking through the palace together on their way to their next meeting, hands brushing occasionally they were so close. Zuko was telling him about the trip to see his uncle he’d just gotten back from and how well Azula was doing, and his enthusiasm was clear in how Azula came out with a soft whistling ‘th’ instead of a hard ‘z’, how he stuttered over Jasmine Dragon ever so slightly, how his face was locked in a carefree smile and his hands gestured freely.

Sokka couldn’t look away or dampen the smile on his face, and he knew that if Zuko were to look over, he’d see all the love and adoration he felt for him clearly written for the world to see.

But Zuko didn’t look over, and Sokka didn’t stop staring- they just continued walking.

As they were rounding the corner, neither of them were paying attention, as absorbed in Zuko’s story as they were, and they didn’t see the group of men walking their way until Zuko had already crashed into one of them.

The man stumbled, spilling the scrolls he was holding, and both Sokka and Zuko dropped to the ground to help pick them up.

“I’m tho thorry,” Zuko exclaimed, head bowed as he scrambled to grab them, his lisp clear. “That wath completely my fault.”

“...No worries, Fire Lord Zuko,” one of the men said, disdain dripping from his words.

Sokka’s heart ached as he realized just who it was, and he glanced at Zuko to see his cheeks burning red as he came to the same realization. General Takashi was the military advisor, an old man who had been very vocal about his disagreement with the end of the war. Since then, he’d continued to fight Zuko on every decision he made, and hadn’t bothered to hide how much he hated the young ruler. Of all the people to hear Zuko’s lisp right now, he was one of the worst.

Sokka opened his mouth to speak for Zuko, but his best friend shook his head minutely. He rose to his feet gracefully, scrolls bundled in his arm, and looked at him evenly, even though Sokka could tell he was panicking slightly.

“General Takathi,” he greeted, before turning to the advisor who’s scrolls he held. “Onthe again, my apologieth. Here are your thcrollth. If you’ll excuthe the ambathador and I, I’m afraid we’re late for a meeting.”

Without waiting for a response, Zuko pushed past them and continued down the hallway.

“Excuse us,” Sokka echoed, following him worriedly.

As they walked away, he heard Takashi say in disdain, “Unbelievable. What sort of Fire Lord can’t even say a general’s name properly?”

Sokka hoped Zuko hadn’t heard it, but when he saw his shoulders tense and his stride lengthen, he knew it was in vein. His heart broke, and as they passed the door to his office, he lunged forward to grab Zuko’s hand and pull him into it.

“Thokka-“ Zuko cut himself off, eyes squeezing shut in annoyance and embarrassment and wrenching his hand away from Sokka. He pretended it didn’t sting as much as it did. “What are you doing? We’re going to be late.”

“They can wait. I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“I’m fine. Now let’th- let’th-” he sighed, turning away as he took a deep breath and carefully said, “Let’s go.”

“Zuko, please. You’re not in any condition to run a meeting right now.”

“I’ll have the lithp under control by then, Thokka. It’th fine,” he snapped, lisp coming back with his broken composure.

His heart broke. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.”

He sighed again. “I know,” he said tiredly, hanging his head. “I know that’th not what you meant. I juth-“ He groaned. “I’m thorry you have to hear thith, I know it’th annoying.”

“No it’s not, Zuko. I promise you, I don’t mind. I sort of... Well, I sort of prefer it?”

“What?” Zuko’s tone was immediately defensive.

“That’s not a good way to describe it. I just meant that when you’re lisping, it’s usually because you’re happy, or talking about something you love. And I like it when you’re happy, because you get all soft and beautiful and I love it because I want you to be happy. So, yeah... I love hearing the lisp.”

“I-“ Zuko turned to him slowly, eyes watering slightly. “Ith that why you were thtaring? You think I’m beautiful?”

Sokka blushed, realizing just what he’d admitted. “Oh. You noticed I said that. And also... that I was staring.”

“Thorta hard not to,” he laughed shakily, taking a step closer to Sokka. “I hoped you felt that way, though.”

“Oh,” he breathed, suddenly understanding and stepping forward so that they’re were just inches apart, eyes searching each others’. “Uh, yeah... It’s... Well. Yes. I do feel that way, and if you feel that way too...”

Zuko rolled his eyes fondly. “Juth kith me, Thokka.”

Sokka had never heard anything sweeter.

goddddd thank you so much i've been trying to do a speedpaint to show my process but i literally forget to film whenever i draw......

so i am going to put it into words just for You... regarding the more Painterly art, i hoard reference photos and i take my own photos as well. i try to mix eyeballing colors and using the dropper tool because i find it fun and interesting...ive only been rendering things for a few months and doing anything that isn't Flat colors and lineart is hard so the eyedropper tool has been god's little gift to me. i only use one brush for everything and i think its just some "pencil" brush that came with the SAI version i downloaded. havent evolved past using anything else yet, i'm still in the fish phase and this is my little stagnant pool that i happily live in

i try to only do One sketch and paint over it, whenever i do multiple sketches over one another the poses progressively look more stiff and staged i guess? the initial sketch always looks the coolest & Freshest even if it's a little wonky

if i'm doing line art i just pray to the Good Lord & Go for it... lately the "line art" is just the initial sketch which i've carved out with an eraser a bit... makes things quicker and after doing lineart from scratch for years i am literally just so tired of it.

uhhhhh that's pretty much it and yeah...i'm also a big supporter of using layer effects on art, i think it's like doing a little collab with my computer...however the more confident i feel the Less i use layer effects so i guess it just depends on the drawing & mood

here’s a comprehensive list of all the highly legit reasons why everyone should start shipping Cloud / Bartz in our lord’s year of whatever

THE CONTRASTS.  there’s a lot, first we got the immediate aesthetics with Bartz’s bright pastel clothing palette having minimal coverage with this really lightweight tank top and sashes adorned all over with decorative beads, then there’s Cloud with these bulky uniform-esque outfits all predominantly dark colors, all baggy and heavy and harsh.  like you can really just judge the book by its cover with these two, y’know?

this contrast of light vs. heavy reflects in their fighting styles too,  Bartz is adaptive and fast as all getout,  but you can feel Cloud’s weight in his strides.  he’s heavy,  and he hits hard but at the cost of really having to commit to every action without the wiggle room to switch gears if he’s halfway through a swing.  power battle couple.

another hot contrast is storywise   -   Cloud’s narrative involves the reveal that he ultimately failed to achieve his dream of following in his hero’s footsteps and thus thematically becomes an inversion of this prospect of fame,  success,  and the inheritance of power through the fact that he achieves such greatness (read: trauma) through arguable bad luck and a series of accidents,  and being just this normal small town boy who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.   Bartz,  on the other hand,  inherits his late father’s legacy despite the latter’s wishes for him to live a life free from such burden,  and is chosen to be a Warrior of Light.  so it’s like......   a boy who was rejected and considered a failure with a boy who was chosen to carry his dad’s legacy.  love that.

also hey,  Bartz lost his mother at a young age and was raised by his father until his passing a few years before the start of the game.  Cloud lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother until her passing a few years before the start of the game.

now check out some OTHER GOOD STUFF:

the chocobo connection  -  Bartz adores his chocobo.  Cloud’s hair is described as looking like a chocobo.  give me a dollar.

Cloud has easily triggered motion sickness.  Bartz is afraid of heights.

never forget that Cloud was on Chaos’ side before Cosmos brought him over to hers.  meaning that once upon a time in 012,  he and Bartz were fighting on opposite sides in a cosmic war between two gods.  spicy stuff.

ACTUAL CANON STUFF NOW OK  so Cloud’s honestly pretty absurdly kind to Bartz when they’re paired off in Dissidia NT just going off comparison to how he tends to treat characters in all his other spinoff appearances,  and it’s not even just exclusive to NT,  his opening battle quotes to Bartz in both PSP titles are also notably kinder in nature.  likewise,  Bartz in both his original game and especially in his PSP appearance isn’t really the sort to have any trepidation over saying whatever to whoever,  and yet there’s that cute little  “sooo uhhhhh........... i’m glad you didn’t forget about me :)”  and  “oh you’re breaking my heart”  and “always the consummate gentleman”  and they got that wholesome little background guitar strumming going.  

Cloud is straight up chill and relaxed the entire time they’re together,  their scenes just come off as so peaceful compared to all these other nerds turning into furries and having daddy issues in real time.  you’d almost expect someone like Bartz to grind on Cloud’s nerves,  but in canon he just...... doesn’t.  Cloud goes out of his way to find him,  saves him,  sticks with him the entire game,  is just overall very at ease around him.  NT’s story is empty trash but this is nice stuff.

Shantotto keeps awkwardly interrupting their staring contests and i just think that’s very anti behavior of her.

Sephiroth knocks Cloud into Bartz like he’s a bowling pin and like honestly me too.

“wait,  that is your name,  right?  Cloud?  like puffs in the sky?”

listen they got the whole  i didn’t remember anything until you showed up  amnesia trope going on and that’s pretty groovy.

also the trope that they only have this much time together before they’re either killed or sent back to their own separate worlds where they might just forget everyone and everything all over again.

witch: favorite game soundtrack?  Hmmm probably Fever 2′s.  Its the one I listen to the most on my free time

rulue: who are your mains?   Sig and Lemres.  Tho I seem to play very well as Feli , despite not enjoying her actual character much.

carbuncle: favorite animal character?   Baldanders !!!  He truly is the goodest of bois ~ <3

suketoudara: do you like gag characters?   No.   Personally I think they fill to large of a section in the cast , and tend to just get in the way of the plot.   Fun in small doses , but not my cup of tea .

amitie: favorite game?   A hard choice between 15th anniversary and Fever 2 . Fever 2 has the best plot  but 15th has the best gameplay.   worth noting tho , that I think Fever 1 has the best character writing.

sig: favorite/least favorite character?  Sig is by far my favorite beating out the rest of the cast by a country mile.   And my least favorite would have to be Schezo.    He’s just a perfect example of “Neat idea but terrible execution” , his character feels incredibly half baked and just full of poor gimmick writing.

rider: favorite art style?   Fever 2 , hands down.   Its probably the perfect balance as far as line thickness , shading , detail , ect.  Some good art came after it , but never quite as consistently nice as Fever 2′s

lemres: who’s attack animations do you like best?    Oshare Bones’s .  His animation through out the series are really lovely and his battle animations in 15th anniversary are always a treat to see.

feli: what do you want the next game to be like? any returning characters in the roster? 

I WANT A STORY DRIVEN PUYO GAME!!!   I want a new entry in the style of Fever 2 but greatly expanded upon and starts where F2 left off  ,   I would like it to have either Amitie or Sig as the lead and have it be focused on a strong single narrative .  But also have side quests for each character .  You’d get to have a cell shaded 3d model of your character and get to wonder around Primp as the game hub .  with each actual story quest or side mission having a story book style cut scene setup with full voice acting and have the intro and outro to the stories have full 2d animated cutscenes !!!!  ( Also have it include the cast and game modes of 15th anniversary )

baldanders: favorite puyoquest card/series?   THE LUPIN III  CROSSOVER !!! They did Zeni so much justice <3

accord: do you play for story mode or gameplay?   Story mode.  Truth be told while the gameplay is fun and all , there is an endless list of good to great puzzle games of this nature that  PuyoPuyo is pretty interchangeable with. The thing that sets Puyo apart is its good cast , interesting back stories and fun character interactions .  And its for those reasons why I play through the series.

popoi: do you like any of the vocal tracks?   Sigs theme .  I could listen to it on repeat for hours. 

ocean prince: do you tend to like main characters or side characters more?  Side characters.   Most  “Main characters” across the franchise tend to fall short of greatness for me ,  with Sig , Amitie and Klug being exceptions.  So more often then not an interesting side character with 1 too lines  rates higher in my books .

ringo: english or japanese voices?   Japanese .   for the most part I think the JP cast does really well with the cast ,  especially the female cast.  and some of the older male characters .  But Sig  I tend to prefer the ENG  VA’s  interpretations of his personality and tone.  ( Ben Diskin  really crushed it )

maguro: favorite mode(s) to play?    ICE BLOCKS AND FEVER !!!!    There’s a bunch of good modes but those two take the cake .

risukuma: favorite ship(s)?  OHOHO .... Sig x Amitie . Satan x Arle.... and I’m fond of some of the Sig x Klug content I see as well 👀💦 

ally: favorite obscure fact about puyo?   Hmmm , probably the fact that Sonic Team directed Puyo Fever 1 and 2 and 15th . with Takashi Yuda  , Yuji Naka being  Director and producer and Yuji Uekawa  doing Fever 1 & 2′s character designs .

rafisol: favorite “antagonist” character?   SATAN!  He is simply the greatest baddie in the franchise .  Extremely solid design , Good JP VA  and has a clear and understandable motive.

o: favorite backgrounds/settings?   As far as area’s  I’m pretty fond of the Haunted mansion setting in Fever 2 , along with the ancient ruins.

zed: favorite headcannons for any characters?   Uhhhhh....  I headcanon that Sig is actually pretty smart and not an airhead , but just does poorly in academic enviroments.  And that Onion pixies have children by burying themselves in the ground while their partner guards them as they bulb new seeds.

ai: favorite voice line(s)?  Oh lord.... Honestly all of Oshares dialogue is outstanding , and both his battle lines are splendid.   Hard to choose just one tho xd 

harpy: favorite obscure/lesser known character?   Suketoudara 100% !!  No one could ever outmatch his quality ~

oshare: hottest character?   Hmmmmmmmmmmmm  Sig.   He’s just very much my type .  From personality , to design . to VA’s  to just his whole vibe.   Honestly all I could really ask for on improvement is that they start writing him as his own age.  he’s clearly in his late teens but they recently just write him like he’s a damn 12 year old , and that ruins it for me personally.  GIVE US MATURE SIG DAMMIT !!!
