trying out a new type of watercolour paper so dave gets to be my guinea pig

#art #traditional art #watercolour #oc art #ocs #oc group: dave #oc: dave #im trying out some of the fluid student grade stuff. i like their fluid 100 fully cotton stuff but if i can find a non 100% cotton paper #that works well with my painting style my wallet would appreciate it LOL so far it seems good! #i paint kinda weird because i hate lifting so much i dont do it and i hate when it accidentally happens #its a technique that has a lot of uses but none for me HJFDHBFSKD if i make a mistake and i dont wipe it away fast enough with my finger #then its just there now. it was meant to be LOL but yeah i dont do lifting so i get like #irrationally angry when im trying to layer something and it lifts. which is always a problem i have with watercolour paper thats not 100 #cotton. and also for some reason the mixed media paper i use does well with layering too so i like it #but if i can find a nice thick not as wrinkly cellulose paper that lets me layer that would be very nice hJFJDKJFD #but i'll need to to test out this paper more. its promising it let me layer pretty well with daves skin (tho the shading is a little light) #(but thats because i put too much water in the mix RIP) and it seems the colours that are supposed to stain arent lifting which is good #(so many watercolour papers ive used have made my most staining of staining pigments lift which always bugs me LOL) #but we shall see!

It's actually harder than #I initially thought to regularly find time to do a quick ms paint sketch and a small writing blurb #it's like even though it doesn't take extremely long it's still one of those things that is hard to carve out a little portion of the day #to do if your day is set up in a way not conducive to portion carving #BUT .. at least I have posted many drafts #as usual.. my style of like.. post nothing for 3 weeks then randomly post 25 things at once #NO idea why my brain works that way. it just does. it's easier #even though I know it's worse in terms of like. social media #the algorithms in most places prefer consistent steady uploads over time. not jarringly wavering between absence and hyper presence #then absence again. but .. alas... #Good to clear out a few drafts once in a while anyway. And I do really want to get back to scullptures and costumes. I stopped as much for #a while due to the pandemic (can't go to the bins anymore to get new supplies for costumes and stuff) as well as my worsened #health things/lack of energy and also my chest injury (so repetitive movements with my arms such as sitting in the same #position sculpting for 4 hours or changing clothes multiple times in quick succession etc. could flare it up) but obviously #none of those things are going to get better any time soon. so I should probably just try to do it here and there anyway. It's still not #safe to go to the bins. still having muscle problems. still low energy. But I could make it work maybe. I just feel bad having gotten out #of the habit when it is really fun stuff that I enjoy. Some things just get more difficult for me over time #But even like 3 sculptures and 10 costumes a year is better than 0 of any of those things. So. eh #I'm also just trying to clear out pictures still. My spring cleaning (which I do at the start of every new year instead of actual spring) #was kind of delayed this year due to me feeling sick and everything so even late into april I'm still working on the side at like orgnazing #all of the files on my computer. deleting things and backing up whatever I want to keep. clearing out photos. #editing and drafting (and maybe one day posting) old stuff form a while ago. etc. etc. #So any progress is good progress. getting intense joy from painting my nails wasn’t an expected outcome of my day but it is definitely a welcome one!

#in todays episode of ‘oh dang cis ppl can also get gender euphoria huh’ #the more this happens the more I am convinced that gender expression is rly a personal thing #bc like. my roommate would NOT like to paint her nails or wear hairbows or skirts. she doesn’t enjoy them. #but she considers herself very feminine in her own right by the colors and styles of the shirts she wears and how she does her hair #I didn’t used to think I liked looking particularly feminine at all bc I found so much of it uncomfortable #turns out girliepop had sensory issues and the ‘beautiful lace dresses and nylon tights and makeup’ wasn’t doing it for me #but when given the chance to choose how I look. I find that I actually enjoy some of the stereotypical feminine stuff a lot! #and also enjoy some stereotypically unfeminine things bc they make me *feel* more like a girl even if they’re not like that for everyone #like my Minecraft socks! and t-shirts from the men’s section at Meijer. and button ups with loud patterns! and my undercut 🩵 #also a lot of it I think is just. I am expressing what I like and enjoy. and part of who I am is a girl. so having the ability to express #myself in my clothing means I feel more like me. which includes feeling like a girl. which is v cool. #like I have other nail polish but I don’t like it bc it’s smth my mom picked out for me and it’s not rly my taste. #I have a ton of jewelry but only some of it is smth I would ever actually wear. bc I got it from my great grandma. who had different tastes. #but my Minecraft socks and patterned skirts and graphic tees and hairbows are all things that show what I like! #even if it’s not super matchy or coordinated. I look like me! #and now I have nails in my favorite color and I’m gonna try and get my hair dyed again in colors I like #I just. have the agency to look like me. and I keep surprising myself by how much I love that. #instead of copying what my family considers to be ‘good taste’

#I have nothing against cell shading or anything it's fine #some of my favorite artworks I've completed are cell shaded #it's more my frustration with being unable to figure out how all my favorite illustration styles manage to color their work #also my wrist has been acting up again and I finally made a doctor's appt. to make sure it's nothing I should worry about #here's hoping it's nothing serious and that it won't affect my art making #but anyhow painterly stuff can look so cool but it is so time consuming and frustrating and not fun #might play around with trying to mix cell shading and some more smaller painterly stuff that doesn't drive me crazy #it's just weird to think for so many years I've been trying to figure out a good shading style #and cell shading or no shading at all may end up being the best fit for me #anywho that's all for tonight folks #oracle of lore
