Deep Cleaning the Refrigerator; One of my Most Dreaded Tasks
If you are anything like me, often you will be playing a guessing game with the food in your fridge. We have all been there. That moment when you are in the kitchen looking at a tub of yogurt wondering if it’s still safe to eat. Hunting down the expiration date. Struggling to find it and turning the whole container around in your hands trying to spot that little 6–8 digit code. I find myself in this position far more than I would like to admit. Which means I need to maintain my refrigerator a bit better.
Now. You should be deep cleaning your refrigerator every 2-3 months. It’s been a bit longer than that for me. But to get started just simply grab a trash bag and begin removing all the spoiled food. The longer you leave spoilt food in the fridge the faster your other food will go bad as well. Get everything. And I do mean everything. Check the crisper drawer, check the cheese drawer, check the door. Did you get all the bad food? Great! That’s progress! Go ahead and tie off that bag and take it out to the bin.
Next take everything out of the fridge. Put it all on the table, island, bar or wherever you have space. Once it’s there just leave it, don’t touch it, and don’t think about it. We will handle that later. Go ahead and take all the shelves and drawers out of the fridge. I personally put them in the bathtub for this step. Turn the tap on and let the water get hot. Pour a bit of dish soap over them and start washing them down with a cotton rag. If you have a soft scrub brush or extra toothbrush, use that to get into any corners or crevices, as well as to remove any stuck-on mess. Once they have been thoroughly scrubbed rinse them with clean hot water and spray on some antibacterial cleaner and let it set for 5 minutes.
While that is setting go ahead and fill a bucket or bowl with hot soapy water. Using a cotton rag or soft scrub brush thoroughly wipe out and scrub the inside of the fridge and the door. Feel free to use baking soda and vinegar to assist in removing caked mess. And be willing to scrub. Don’t just simply wipe it out because that won’t get it clean. Once you have finished cleaning out the fridge wipe it down with clean hot water and a clean rag. Spay antibacterial cleaner inside and let it set for 5 minutes.
Go rinse the cleaning spray off your shelves and drawers then place them somewhere to dry. I put mine on towels and aim a fan at them to dry them quicker. As those dry go ahead and refill your bucket with 3 parts hot water and 1 part white vinegar. This time pay special attention to the seal of the fridge door as those often grow mold. Take care not to remove the door seal as that is how your refrigerator stays cold. Clean it down gently but thoroughly and do your best to remove visible mold though keep in mind the seal might have some greyish black staining from any mold. Dry the seal with a dry rag or allow to airdry.
Now fill your bucket with hot soapy water. Close the fridge door. And scrub the outside. We don’t often think about how much dirt our hands have on them. And things like refrigerator handles are high traffic areas. I would recommend starting with a scrub brush and moving onto a rag after you have loosened the dirt. Once you have finished scrubbing wipe it down with clean hot water and dry the door or let airdry.
Place all your shelves and drawers back in the fridge and begin putting the food away. As you put things away just wipe down the outsides of containers with hot soapy water and dry them off as you organize your fridge. And now you’re done! And the biggest thing to remember is that you don’t need to feel guilty for having a fridge that needs cleaning. But you absolutely should be proud of the results when you are done.

Chapter One: Jim
13/10
//suicide
i woke up to a bright light.
Pops was there.
his face was red and I knew he had a lot to say to me.
i shut my eyes and tried to sleep again.
Pops saw what I was doing.
he didn't yell at me though.
his face turned calm and he just said,
"i'm sorry, Jim."
i scrunched up my nose and ask him
"why?"
he sighed.
"i can see now that i've failed you. how could i blame you for what you've done"
my brain switched from defending myself to defending him.
my voice cracked
"you haven't done anything either!"
Gail was standing in the corner, puffing the smoke from her e-cigarette into the room.
the last time i'd seen Gail, her hair was curly and blonde. now it was shorter, straight, and shiny black. it always looked tacky to me, but sometimes i would keep that to myself.
Pops adjusted his tie and spoke to me.
"i should have been a father to you."
"you did everything you could!" i told him. "you think this is all because of you, but it's not, it's because of me. i was doomed."
Pops pause at this comment.
he looked down,
then he looked at the wall,
and then he looked down again.
he opened his mouth,
then closed it.
and then he said, "this isn't the end, Jim. things will get better. i'll make then get better. do you understand me?"
i nodded, absently.
Pops tried to look into my eyes, which were wandering away from him.
"you know," Pops said, giving up on eye-contact, "i was a lot like you when i was a kid. i couldn't stand the shackles of grown-up society."
now, i looked at him and added "you still can't."
he chuckled.
"i just don't want you to think that just because i'm your dad, that i can't also be your friend as well."
he placed his hand on my hair and moved it out of my face.
i moved it back.
Gail's vape smoke scattered the rays from the light above my head, making it easier for me to open my eyes. that was nice, but it smelt bad.
Pops changed his tone to speak to Gail, "could you stop that? i don't even think you're allowed those in here."
she silently put her vape in her purse and folded her arms.
i didn't lift my head.
my neck didn't hurt,
but it felt wrong.
i wonder if my back's okay.
i suddenly remembered something and i said
"Pops, Amanda! have you spoken to her? i need to tell her i'm ok!"
i spoke so fast
my words slurred together
and they felt weird
in my mouth.
Pops looked severe.
"i don't know her parents. do you have her phone number or something?"
"i don't."
"you'll see her again at the support group." Pops pointed out.
"oww." i didn't want to go back there. i didn't want to see a circle of fabric chairs again. i didn't want to tell my name and situation to a circle of people ever again in my life.
my Pops understood my interjection.
"you could come back one more time," he suggested. "say goodbye to Amanda, get her number or something."
"get her number? i'm not in love with her!"
"so you don't want to stay in touch?"
"... i don't want to go back."
Gail popped a piece of bubblegum into her flamingo pink mouth. then she offered it to Pops and me.
i declined.
Pops shook his head and reminded her,
"i don't eat sugar."
"what about fruit?" Gail squawked. "fruits are healthy!"
Pops turned back to me.
"is your head okay?"
i was confused for a second, then i realised it wasn't okay.
it felt sore in a new kind of way.
not a headache flavour i'd experienced before.
"i don't like it." i told him.
"should i kiss it better?"
i put on a fancy accent and said, "i would prefer a world in which i am never kissed."
Gail blew a big, green bubble with her green apple bubblegum.
it popped.
"the bus leaves in about ten minutes," she said. "we should probably run."
Pops nodded, calmly.
i tried to get up,
but my body stopped.
i couldn't see anything
except for the pain in my spine.
'
Pops booped me on the nose and said, "not you, babycake."
usually, i didn't like people booping my nose, but Pops was an exception.
"boop." Gail booped me on her way past.
now that was a violation.
i didn't tell her this time that i hated it, because she was just leaving and i felt too tired, emotionally.
and then
they were gone.
i was alone.
it was just me and the lingering sent of green apple bubblegum.
i tried to go back to sleep,
but what i had been doing wasn't sleep,
i was unconcious.
i couldn't sleep.
everything felt like it was in the wrong place
in my brain
in my body
in the world
why am i here?
a nurse came into the room, breaking my lonely silence.
he moved some stuff around and said,
"how are we?"
without looking in my direction.
"it hurts." i told him.
he nodded, wisely, "it usually does."
"will i be okay?"
the nurse cocked his head,
"that's quite a heavy question."
"i mean,
"will my spine recover soon?"
"the doctor said you'll probably be able to walk again."
i checked his face for humour.
"i might... not be able to walk again?
"Ever?"
the nurse paused.
then asked
"would you like a lollipop?"
"i certainly would, thank you."

When Earth has ended- Part 1.
// This is an experimental piece of writing. It’s an original story. //
The scientists have calculated that Earth had not more than 1 billion years to exist before its Sun will inevitable turn into a supernova.
Most humans had evacuated from their original home planet and traveled far into the exo-planet which was originally referred to as Kepplar -22b in the ancient times, then its name changed into Delta Prime
Despite the fact that humans have dispersed themselves into space colonies and other exo-planets across the galaxies, Delta Prime became the main home-planet for the now Earthless humans.
In fact in the edifices, streets, houses, parks, rivers, mountains and seas are still carved in the memory of their beloved Earth.
If you are a human that belonged to the generation XI, you would still be able to feel the familiarity of the planet that was once your species’ only home, but several advancement and technology had changed also marked the advancement of these humans, so Delta is an amalgamation of the old and the new,.
The new generation of humans that were born in 3B PGE , know Earth only through history books and through the memories of their grandparents.
Slowly Earth will be only but a distant memory, and those who are born now will never know what was like to be homebound in one planet, with no external extra-terrestrial communication.
They lifted their eyes up in the sky dreaming of what back in that day was impossible.
Alex was five years old when he left Earth to become a permanent resident of Delta Prime.
There were many who were unlucky and they were trapped on Earth because they did not have the financial ability or resources to be able to leave.
After all, humans who thrive are those who have the means.
Alex peeks out of the window from the control station and catches a glimpse of the Round Blue Planet, and a sense of bitter sweetness burned in his throat.
He was too young to get too attached to the Original Homeplanet, but he was old enough to remember it.
In fact, this was the first time he visited Earth since he left with his parents.
And he knew it was going to be the last.
