Ever since I watched Your Name Engraved Herein two weeks ago, I have wanted to talk about Jiahan as whole but in particular this scene right here that starts around the 40 minute mark.

As soon as I watched this scene I just knew it had to be really significant and now rewatching YNEH, I realize that this is a major ideological turning point for Jiahan as a character. From this point on he slowly begins to accept that he’s gay and starts to consciously act on his feelings for Birdy. However, I must first add some context and insights on Jiahan’s prior behavior before I dive into this scene as a whole. At the beginning of the movie, we see that while Jiahan feels different from the rest of his roomates, he still sneaks out with them when they go hook up with girls, despite not showing any interest in the girl he’s with. He feels very different from the rest of his friends, but still goes along with them due to peer pressure. Later, he tries to dissuade them from violently hazing the gay student, Xie Zhenhong, (his name is never said in the film but it says so on his uniform shirt, and that what I’ll refer to him as for the rest of the post) but is reluctantly influenced to gang up on the student as well. He closes his eyes while he’s about to strike the bat down on the student, until Birdy rescues the student-- and Jiahan in a way-- from what is about to play out. After this, his friends accuse him of being in the same stall as Birdy (which he was) but he denies it, not wanting to explain why he was there and the ensuing taunting from his friends.

While its obvious that Jiahan has feelings for Birdy, he isn’t confident enough to pursue them outright. Birdy is the more confident one in both their friendship and in his sexuality, not caring about how anyone perceives him and does what he wants regardless of the consequences. Jiahan is the one worried about societal stigma and goes along with things he doesn’t want to do. However after this encounter with the gay underclassman pictured above, Jiahan become more brave and honest about his feelings towards Birdy. Interestingly enough in the scene directly after this, Birdy begins to conceal his true feelings for Jiahan and pursue a straight relationship with Banban. He doesn’t do this hurt Jiahan, as he does reciprocate Jiahan’s feelings, but to discourage him from coming out and becoming a social pariah for being gay. Birdy himself doesn’t mind being an outcast, but he does not want to see the same thing happen to the one he loves. So instead of letting Jiahan do that, he tries to discourage Jiahan from ever pursuing him by getting a girlfriend and suggest Jiahan does the same. In the same day, both Jiahan and Birdy come to opposite realizations about their feelings for the other, thereby changing their dynamic for the course of the movie. Someone else has picked apart Birdy’s scene in their own post. If you haven’t read that analysis, please go read it, because its really good at explaining Birdy’s character since most of his story isn’t directly revealed to us. We must read inbetween the lines and piece it together, which can be confusing on a first watch.

Anyways, now we can focus on Jiahan. At this point in the movie, Jiahan is trying to understand why he’s upset that Birdy is showing interest in a girl in their band while dealing with his own internalized homophobia and denial over his sexuality. He then turns to the only out gay person he knows -- Xie Zhenhong, who he sees in the cafeteria with new bruises on his face. He looks at Jiahan with a smile. This makes me feel like Zhenhong probably picked up on Jiahan and Birdy’s feelings for each other since last year, when he saw them exit the same stall in the bathroom. Having been the Distinguished Out Person in a group before, I can definitely relate to the way Zhenhong reacts to Jiahan. It the typical “oh honey, you don’t realize it yet, but I know you’re gay” reaction.

Jiahan waits outside the cafeteria and calls out to out him from behind. At first Zhenhong ignores him as we can see that he smirks a bit when he first speaks. He definitely heard Jiahan but doesn’t answer him until he repeats himself a few times. Zhenhong purposely stops when the two are in front of the stained glass window, away from others. Jiahan’s word choice towards Zhenhong is also interesting as he addresses him as “學弟” which is a term for an underclassman. To my understanding, it’s not overly formal nor is it overly familiar, however it is the nicest way that anyone has addressed him all movie. Jiahan than asks him who gave him those bruises, showing concern for his well being. He then reveals why he stopped Zhenhong saying “Actually I want to ask you, when did you start liking boys?” This really seals the deal to Zhenhong that Jiahan is talking to him to try and sort out his own feelings towards Birdy. While his suggestion that Zhenhong perhaps “see a doctor” or “consider getting a girlfriend” read as a microaggression to most viewers, Zhenhong himself can tell that Jiahan is asking him this in good faith. And perhaps, this might be the most understanding anyone has been towards him since Birdy helped him out prior. Before he responds, he looks up at Jiahan and fixes his bangs. This all stumps Jiahan whose eyes dart around, speechless. Zhenhong then circles his arms around Jiahan’s neck, a very intimate gesture, and studies him for a moment. We cannot see Jiahan’s face at this moment but he does shuffle slightly, his body language nervous and confused, but not upset. After looking at him, Zhenhong then goes in closer, assumedly to kiss him. At this point, Jiahan physically stops him and grabs him by the throat. However, Jiahan’s face doesn’t seem to be angry, if anything, his face looks more scared and confused-- akin to a ‘what are you doing?’ moment.

Initially Zhenhong’s choice to kiss Jiahan read very...strangely to me. Why would the screenwriter, as a gay man that grew up in the 80’s, choose to include this? What was there to gain? To me it seemed like it was reinforcing the stereotype of gay men being overly flirtacious and viewed as predators. Why show a nonconsentual attempted kiss at all? I thought about it a lot, both for this scene and the following one with the old man and later between Jiahan and Birdy because it seemed?? Odd to me?? Isn’t that a disservice in representing gay men? I don’t fully have the right answer but I feel like by writing the scene like this, it goes to demonstrate how Jiahan still isn’t fully comfortable with being gay. And also that lgbt people, especially teens, aren’t always going to be good rep. Liu Kuang-hui wasn’t writing the movie to be an perfect, morally uplifting, santized gay narritive. He was writing something that spoke to his real life experience as a gay man in 1980’s Taiwan. In real life, people do questionable things and good narratives are supposed to make you question characters and their actions and judge for yourself whether what they did was right or wrong. The narrative isn’t looking to condemn Xie Zhenhong for doing this. Xie Zhenhong is ultimately a victim of violent homophobia, that will not hide himself or his sexuality despite the violence he faces. He isn’t perfect, nor is Jiahan, nor is Birdy, nor is anyone in the film.

Although now having rewatched this scene upwards of eight times in writing this, it feels like Zhenhong didn’t assume this action to be without consent. Of course, no words were explicitly exchanged about kissing, and I’m not trying to make the case that it’s okay to kiss someone without their consent, that’s harassment. However, Zhenhong did gave Jiahan time to express his discomfort before proceeding. Zhenhong first got close to Jiahan by brushing his bangs, Jiahan did not say anything or look visibly uncomfortable. He then put his arms around Jiahan’s neck, and stared at him for a good ten seconds. At this point, Jiahan had time to say he was uncomfortable. As we know it, consent does indeed entail a verbal, understood yes from both parties. However given the context, I can understand why Zhenhong thought that Jiahan was consenting at that moment. However the moment Jiahan revoked his consent Zhenhong stopped trying to kiss him. Zhenhong shouldn’t have gone in without getting verbal consent, and Jiahan could’ve done something other than grabbing him by the throat. They were both in the wrong. Violence shouldn’t have been the reaction, nor should’ve kissing someone without their verbal consent. The lines were very blurred, and proper communication could’ve resulted in a better interaction but like I mentioned above, I don’t think the writers wanted to portray the scene in that way. The intent was not to say that Zhenhong’s actions were romantic or something to emulate. It was very purposeful in showing to interplay of homophobia, gay desire, and religion.

The scene is set up like a religious confession. Zhenhong purposefully leads Jiahan to the stained glass, a metaphor for his religious guilt. He doesn’t look Zhenhong in the eyes, his voice is hushed, and body language nervous, and troubled-- it communicates to Zhenhong that he thinks he may be gay and wants either reassurance that he isn’t or acceptance that is. Regardless, it’s a very vulnerable and intimate moment. Jiahan is facing him like ‘hey, I know my friends were bullying you and I wanted to save you but was too much of a coward and almost took part in harming you. I’m sorry. I know you saw that me and Birdy were in the same stall together, and that you saw me just telling him not to talk to the girls, and neither of those are heterosexual things to do. Please, help me.’ He’s asking Zhenhong to pass judgement on him, is he gay or not? By virtue of even asking that question, they both know the answer -- Jiahan is in love with Birdy, but whether Jiahan can accept that or not is up to him. In a way, Zhenhong is testing Jiahan to see how honest he can be with himself. By approaching him like that, he’s testing to see whether Jiahan can accept being intimate with a man or not. It’s not a good or ethical test, but it sure is effective. Because in his head, Jiahan is coming to realize that he doesn’t mind a man being close to him in a romantic way. Although, he isn’t fully there yet. He still grabs Zhenhong. But as Zhenhong stares at him despite the hand around his throat, Jiahan really has to think about his actions. Is that what he really wants to do, or is that what he’s been taught to do? It illustrates his internalized homophobia perfectly. Jiahan is literally staring gay desire in the face, rejecting it, while in front of his religion. Zhenhong finally answers Jiahan that “he has always loved boys since he was little, it’s never changed.” Upon hearing that his grip loosens and he pulls away. And the fact that we can hear him well means that Jiahan was never choking him, his hand was there, but not gripping. Zhenhong pulls him in closer and tilts his head, and says “and it never will.” Zhenhong’s words are very deliberate. It’s as if he anticipated this might happen and knew exactly what to say. He wants to carve it in Jiahan’s brain that no one chooses to be gay. They always are and no amount of denial, like the kind Jiahan is showing, will change that. He then finally lets go of Jiahan, who is speechless, he thanks him, and leaves. Jiahan, however, stays there for a second, processing everything that has happened, and breathes heavily before the scene cuts to later that day.

Finally, I would like to examine exactly what Zhenhong’s “thanks” even means. Why would Zhenhong be thanking Jiahan? On the surface, it lookslike Jiahan waited for this guy to finish eating, then asked him invasive questions about his sexuality and suggest he should get help and then almost choked him. This should count as a microagression at best and an attempted hate crime at worst. But, as I just dived into, this wasn’t a bad faith jeer by Jiahan in order to bully Zhenhong, this was a genuine cry for help made by a deeply confused teenager. I feel like the “thanks.” at the end of the scene was perhaps just as puzzling to me as when I thought about why the staff would have that scene play out like that in the first place? I think his thanks is conveying many things. Firstly, thanking him for not actually hurting him and allowing him to have a semi normal interaction with a student of the same gender. As far as we know, many, MANY different students have tried to hurt him in the new semester alone. Hell, we literally do not even know his name as everyone refers to him by the q slur or some other derogatory term, which speaks a lot to how he is treated. He also may be saying thanks for actually asking him about his sexuality. While Jiahan still followed it up with a suggestion he see a doctor, he still genuinely wanted to know why rather fully assume he has something wrong with him. Also, I feel like he might be thanking Jiahan for being brave enough to actually confront his sexualtiy and ask Zhenhong for help in the first place. Zhenhong really seems to be alone as the only gay student at the school but now knowing that Jiahan is realizing thathe’s gay as well, might make him be hopeful that things may slowly begin to change. Sadly, this interaction is the last time we see Xie Zhenhong all film which sucks because I really liked him. And I feel like it would’ve been really nice to see him after the time skip or at least have Jiahan mention him because this moment was one of the things that really made Jiahan start to accept his sexuality. A cut scene with Father Oliver also contributed, but I really wish Xie Zhenhong got more narrative than being the only out student that was then violently bullied. But, I acknowledge that MANY scenes were cut from the film for length so I can’t complain to much.

Oh god, that was a lot to say about a scene that was literally a minute and thirty seconds long. In conclusion!! I just had a lot of things to say about this scene and the scenes surrounding it. I think Jiahan is just a very painfully relatable character for many LGBT viewers and he was incredibly relatable for me which is why I felt the need to spend my day off writing this as opposed to doing homework. This scene is incredibly rich on many levels and I really appreciate YNEH as a whole for not spoonfeeding the viewer information and letting us interpret and question the scenes on our own and come to our own conclusions about the characters and yea. There’s so much going on and a lot of nuance and idk how to properly convey a lot of my thoughts but I tried really hard bc i really do love this movie. I really was puzzled by this scene at first, but now having examined it, it is my favorite scene in the movie. If this scene was changed in any way to make it more palatable, it would’ve been nearly as impactful which was a hard decision to come to, but I stand by it. I don’t know if I feel the same about other scenes but I will be reviewing YNEH as a whole in a different post. I have much more to say but my thoughts on this scene were far too long to not make it a separate post of its own. In essence, YNEH is about growing up and accepting yourself in all ways. Not all of those things are pleasant but if you cannot accept those things about yourself, you’re doomed to be miserable until you can live life unburdened by your own and societies limitations. Goodnight, my fingers hurt.

Restless Rewatch: Nirvana in Fire, Episode 04

Warning! Spoilers for all 54 episodes!

Schemes in Progress:

Mu Nihuang’s Marriage//Martial Arts Competition: Mei Changsu has a foolproof plan for defeating the lead contender, Baili Qi, who is the only contender who can actually beat Nihuang to win her hand. His plan appears to involve having small children beat the mighty warrior. In fact his plan is way simpler and more delightful than that, but I’ll discuss the specifics in a later post. It’s politically important to defeat Baili Qi, not just personally, because he represents a potential enemy state.

Mu Nihuang’s Marriage//Sima Lei: The Crown Prince and his mom, Consort Yue, want to force Nihuang to marry their dude Sima Lei. The plan is to use Roofie Wine on her. Consort Jing gets wind of this plan and gets a counter-plan rolling.

Getting Tingsheng Out Of The Palace: Mei Changsu uses the anxiety caused by Baili Qi’s badassery to get the Emperor to agree to his ridiculous kid-training plan, and then makes sure Tingsheng, the secret son of the late Prince Qi, is one of the kids he gets to train.

Put Jingyan on the Throne: This scheme gets rolling, with a general pattern of Mei Changsu & team doing whatever they can to sink the leading contenders for the throne, which gives Jingyan an opportunity to rise up. The leading contenders tend to cooperate in their own sinking because they are ruthlessly ambitious, and Mei Changsu designs his plans to take advantage of that.

Banquet Battle

After thoroughly disarming and whomping Jingrui, Baili Qi finishes by flinging Jingrui’s sword into the floor right in front of him.

Jingrui, who hoped to literally cripple Baili Qi in this fight, has the nerve to be affronted by this.

Baili Qi shows his impeccable barbarian manners, giving the Emperor a nice gesture of respect that is presumably local to Northern Yan. Meanwhile, Mei Changsu and Nihuang are snarking quietly at their table like a couple of high schoolers.

Mei Changsu pretends to be embarrassed when the Emperor tells them to share their joke with the whole class, but of course it’s always a scheme, with him.

He and Nihuang explain to everyone that they were just chatting about how Baili Qi is great and all, but that Mei Changsu could train some small amateur children to beat his bitch ass, given a couple of days to teach them to run in a circle.

The emperor thinks this is a good plan, and gets right on board with it.

This is not actually because the emperor is an idiot, however, although Prince Yu clearly thinks so.

The emperor IS an idiot, but on this occasion I think he has correctly deduced that Mei Changsu has some kind of shady plan in mind, and he is 100% in favor of shady plans, if they work to his benefit.

Consort Bestie

Jingyan’s mom Consort Jing is hanging out in the palace, and meets up with her girlfriend bestie, Imperial Concubine Hui. Historically, the Emperor’s collection of women was divided into ranks; how many ranks was different for different periods. In NIF, Consort Jing and I.C. Hua belong to the “outer palace” and the Empress and Consort Yue belong to the “inner palace” because they rank higher. The Empress likes to pick on IC Hua, and has sent her to light a bunch of candles in a haunted palace.

Consort Jing goes with her because they are girlfriends besties, and because she is a consistently nice person who deserves all the good things in the world. Spoiler: Both of these women survive, they stay friends, things work out well for both of them and for their sons. Go ahead and root for them!

Because the haunted palace belongs to the late Empress, mother of the Emperor and of Grand Princess Liyang, these BFFs are ideally placed to overhear some important scheming, involving some drugged wine that’s been sitting around in this part of the compound for like 30 years.

They realize that someone is planning to sexually assault a woman by using this drugged wine, and Nihuang is the obvious candidate, since her marriage plans are all anyone’s talking about now. Consort Jing tells Concubine Hua to forget all about this and not get involved in palace drama, but she immediately gets to work intervening in the situation herself.

Training

Over at the Xie guesthouse, Mei Changsu is training the kiddies in a special sword formation designed to beat Baili Qi. They sure do have pretty sword forms for a bunch of kids who have never held a sword. Also, someone’s chalk skills are off the chain.

Mei Changsu tells Fe Liu that they have to be faster, so Fe Liu tells them “go faster” and they do, which is apparently the essence of learning martial arts.

Mu Nihuang shows up and sees right through all of this, making it clear she needs a miracle to get her out of this unwanted marriage. Mei Changsu tells her that he’s got it covered. She says that she believes him, although she’s not sure why.

Then they stand there gazing heatedly at each other, like you do when you are two random people who have never met until recently, and definitely have never gotten each other off even a little bit.

Embroidery Flexing

Meanwhile, Consort Jing sets out to save Nihuang from the wine/marriage plot, through the power of embroidery.

In order to do this she has to make embroidered scent sachets for the Dowager Empress, the Empress, the Grand Princess, and Consort Yue, which she does before going to bed for the night, apparently. Consort Jing kicks ass.

She makes sure that the Dowager Empress, who is a sweetheart, will be pleased enough with her sachet that she will invite Consort Jing into the room, which will give her an opportunity to present the actually important sachet to Grand Princess Liyang.

Communication was complicated, before cell phones.

Once they’re alone, Consort Jing tells Grand Princess Liyang about the plot to force Nihuang to marry Sima Lei. She tells her in the most round-about, triggery way possible, because she needs Liyang to have a flashback, I guess? Otherwise we wouldn’t get to watch her own Mom drugging her to force her to marry Xie Yu.

Thanks, Mom, I’d be happy to drink this cup of obvious poison. Mom is terrible but her crown is awesome.

Anyway, once Liyang knows what’s up, she’s on board with team Save Nihuang From Having To Marry A Creep Like My Own Husband.

Clean-shaven Xie Yu: even creepier than regular Xie Yu and also very shiny. Beautiful costume, though. Why are they dressing the flashback villains so nicely?

Side note: presumably Liyang and her mom didn’t know she was already pregnant when they brought Xie Yu into the mix? Because if they had known, she would probably have been fine with just, like, consenting to marry someone or other, to keep her reputation intact. Anyway it’s worth noting that this whole situation is about appearances, not about whether anyone is actually a literal virgin.

The Laughing Prince

Jingyan comes for a visit to see how the training is going, and he and Mei Changsu have a sitdown. Mei Changsu tells him that he’s come to town to make sure that the two main contenders for the throne don’t get it, and that he’s going to work to make Jingyan the next emperor.

Then they stand there gazing at each other, like strangers who definitely have never gotten each other off even a little bit.

Then Jingyan laughs at him

Jingyan thinks it’s impossible that he would ever be emperor, but he’s happy to go along with Mei Changsu’s plans if it will keep his jerk brothers from winning.

Building Team Jingyan

Late at night, Meng Zhi drops by to look at Tingsheng and say that he resembles Prince Qi, which he totally doesn’t, but Chinese dramas really don’t worry about casting people who resemble each other to play twins or whatever, so we can take Meng Zhi’s word for it.

They talk about the Make-Prince-Jing-The-Emperor plan, with Meng Zhi wanting to help out, and Mei Changsu wanting to make sure that only his own hands get dirty with all the schemey stuff he’s planning.

Hu Ge is really good at talking directly to the camera without looking into the lens. It’s a good technique for intense moments and because he doesn’t look straight into the lens, it doesn’t break the fourth wall.

Building Team Nihuang

Liyang has spent the day trying to warn Nihuang about the roofie wine situation, but can’t reach her due to a lack of cell phones and/or embroidery skills.

So she takes the daring step of going to Mei Changsu’s guest house--on her own dang property--which is such a high risk endeavor she has to wear a fancy cloak and cary a super obvious fancy lantern. God forbid a woman walk around her own house at night. Anyway, she’s able to pass the warning to Mei Changsu, and asks him to pass it to Nihuang.

Of course that’s when her husband comes knocking, presumably looking for some affection--he actually is a nice husband who genuinely loves his wife, within the context of a society in which rape is perfectly fine, anyway.

Her junior servants are freaked out, because visiting a man, even your own houseguest, alone at night is not perfectly fine, so if he catches her, they’re all dead, basically. But the elder servant tells them to chill and just watch how she handles it.

She politely tells Xie Yu that his wife was reminded of their first date, and so maybe he should leave her and her feelings and her sharp hairpins and whatnot alone for a while. (I’m inferring the hairpins.) He looks slightly terrified and immediately withdraws.

the tied to a tree scene was funny for me because that's where I realized "OH. I bet people ship them. EW." and I still see that scene as not even remotely friendly, much less romantic, but I just love the GROWTH! zuko needs the redemption arc before he can be with katara. and then I ship them.

a million percent correct take, let me hyper fixate on this shit lol.

so I started watching in book 2, so I was already aware of a bit of the Growth that had taken place when I saw that scene, but it was still... not a shippy moment for me, you know? I mean bdsm isn’t my thing but that scene is not comparable to bdsm which I believe requires consent and communication, none of which is what we see in that scene, and also blegh they’re children LMAO like they’re kids. I feel gross just making that point. but I think that scene is where a lot of the grosser zutara fic comes from, and it just... warms my little queer heart to not see that shit anymore. like I’m sure it is still being written, but people do learn and unlearn, and that is evident in the most popular fanfic sub genres right now not being slave fic or captivity fic (eurghhhh).

people can and should criticize that shit. I am not the kind of person who is cool with uncritically engaging with media, I can’t do it. and that shouldn’t shock any of my followers lmao. but also, that isn’t the whole of zutara; in fact it’s barely a part of it at this point. and it should only be a part of their personal history insofar as he did that to her and then he learned to be better lmao. just like anything he did to aang or sokka or toph, or anyone!

anon, you’re right. part of the reason I love zutara is because of the GROWTH! you’re a million percent correct, zero percent wrong. because zuko works to earn katara’s forgiveness since he recognizes that while he was not directly responsible for the trauma of losing her mother at a young age to the cruelty of the fire lord (a trauma he shares, albeit differently) he IS directly responsible for betraying her trust in the catacombs of change and empathy. he knows that. and I don’t think him being frustrating that she won’t forgive him means that he feels entitled to her forgiveness, he just wants their relationship to be better. like who among us burst from the womb being emotionally mature? not I.

katara is not just willing to forgive people who have both benefited from and also been marginalized by fire nation imperialism - she is pretty quick to do so. like, this might be an effect of white americans writing an indigenous girl’s story in the first place, but she is able to take an intersectional view on oppression - that once it becomes clear that zuko is a victim to fire nation imperialism, perhaps even moreso than he is a benefactor of it, she is like not just willing to forgive him, but actively BONDS with him, despite of their antagonistic history.

katara is not mad at him in book 3 because of how he behaved prior to the crystal catacombs, or because he is fire nation. if she was, she wouldn’t have gone all painted lady for a town of people who have KIND OF benefited from what their government did to her people. the townspeople of jang hui are a pretty decent representation of like, poor people in west virginia for instance. not to say they aren’t capable of horrific racism, but if they have benefited from american empire it is... not very much. they are victims of industry and capitalism, and oh boy I have gone on a tangent LMAO let me get back to the point.

zuko hurt katara PERSONALLY. he betrayed her trust which was fully given because of their shared trauma at the hands of the fire nation. katara wanted zuko to be better than he had been because she could tell that he wanted to be better. but he wasn’t ready - he still wanted his father’s acceptance more than anything. and sometimes people aren’t ready to change, and what zuko and katara teach us that it’s not the onus of forgiveness is not on the wronged party, that “I’m sorry” isn’t always enough. and that when we hurt people, we need to actually do the work to be better, and if we do that, the person whose forgiveness we want might actually see reason to forgive.

and zuko recognizes this by the time he joins up with the gaang - he is finally ready to be better, not just because he knows that fire nation supremacy is bullshit, but because he recognizes that what his father can give him is not worth losing who he truly is.

and we know that when he tells ozai to eat shit, he’s finally ready, which is why that moment is SO GOOD. but the gaang doesn’t know that, and none of them is as emotionally invested in zuko as katara is. I imagine that she feels immense guilt about nearly “wasting” the spirit oasis water on his scar right before she needed to use it to save aang because of zuko’s betrayal of her (and iroh but). part of her anger at zuko imo is anger at herself for trusting him so quickly, without him earning her trust. she was the first to trust him, so she had to be the last to forgive him.

I think that applies whether you ship zutara or you think she takes the place of azula as his sister. none of what I just said is inherently shippy. to me the best zutara fic is about what happens AFTER the show, who they can be to each other when they are adults, who have learned more about what they want in life. especially katara. but the backbone of zutara to me is not the dark or sexy whatever fuckin bullshit bryke thinks it is, but the forgiveness and redemption and personal growth that they both experience with each other.

zuko is a highly empathetic person who cares about what she thinks and listens to her. and I get that aang is also highly empathetic. and I don’t want to go down the anti-kataang road because I’ve said what I think about kataang, and I don’t think zutara has to be to the exclusion of kataang existing at some point. this goes for maiko as well, although lol mai is a lesbian mailee forever ANYWAY

when I was sixteen and furious at the ending of atla, I didn’t feel that way. now that I am nearing thirty, it is hilarious to think that people don’t love multiple people during their journeys. that is also GROWTH. finding out what you want from partners. it’s natural for someone to love a partner and then fall out of love, or demand something else that their partner can’t give. or doesn’t want.

it’s the growth that does it for me. and I think people who don’t know zutara fandom might not get that because they don’t read our fic, they don’t see our discourse, and they’re allowed to feel that way, they are allowed to not interact with our shit. idk I’m proud of the zutara fandom for its growth tbh. no fandom is free of racism (fandoms are people) but we have done better, and it shows. we try not to get into it with kataang shippers now, which is a lot better than what it used to be. like I don’t see the ship wars anymore, I know they are raging but I’m beyond that shit.

I just made my own IPVDb: Internet Pentagon Vids Database with personal ratings because that’s my life now I guess.

This is purely because I’m bored but also because my sad life revolves entirely around them.

Set during Tomato Kino era, this one’s a great mix of cringeyness (Changgu put that umbrella down pls), musicality (we get the absolute best version of Sha La La that has ever been granted to us) and even educational moments? Who else but pedantic trilingual MUN conference speaker Hongnerd wouldn’t let the members sleep for not saying TEETH the proper way. WHO CARES. Although I’ll forgive him because I, too, once fell asleep whilst standing up, and I feel like we should support each other in this community. We also get Hui speaking English and Kino almost busting a lung which, although they give off very different vibes, are both part of my fav Pentagon’s title tracks. Deserved 5 stars at first but it was until I saw that terrifying cheek kiss at the end. Or whatever that was. But these guys are weird.

A glorious display of Pentagon’s first passion: roasting each other. Yuto did Shinwon so dirty it made me see the world from a new perspective. But the iconic “I’ll give you more lines” alone deserves a show win. Even Kino calling Hui “Hoetaek-ah” and then being this close to walk through the window to hide in Australia sends me every time. And you know how everyone’s been saying Wooseok deserves an Oscar for the crazy act that makes him look like he’s taking 200V every time he’s on stage? We been knew he invented Hollywood when he acted Yeooner than Yeoone himself in one firy “where’s the camera” gesture. But anyway, the point is that now I can’t listen to Sha La La (2nd best version) without Yanan’s interpretation of Wooseok’s verse now. This video changed me but not sure it’s in a good way.

Alternatively an hour of Hui embarrassing his members and Yuto laughing instead of breathing. Also the one and only video in which Yeoone made me laugh but he was trying so hard I think that was just out of pity. This video was actually one of the first I watched when I got into them and I started to understand what I got myself into when Wooseok’s special talent was to imitate a broken weeder. Because right that’s something totally normal to be bragging about. I hold this video very dear to my heart, I’ll never say no to Kino dancing on TT or Hui vibin on his piano but you know it was all fun and games until Hong started hugging Jinho from behind out. of. nowhere.

Meteor Garden (2001) Recap: Episode 1

Hi folks, it's 2019 and I'm finally fulfilling my childhood resolution to watch this drama. You have no idea - Meteor Garden was such a hit back in the day. However, back then it was only available either at specific time slots on TV or on crappy VCDs that were passed around the community (i.e. schoolgirls and aunties). I never could be bothered to watch it properly.

Imagine my surprise when I chanced across it on Netflix. I am aware that there's a 2018 remake of Meteor Garden, as well as the Japanese Hana Yori Dango and the Korean Boys Over Flowers, but the 2001 Taiwanese version is the original drama that spawned the madness. The buzz around the 2018 version is laughably negligible compared to the craziness in 2001. I'm so ready to experience the magic of 流星花园.

So without further ado, here we go.

Episode 1: Summary

We are introduced to Shan Cai (Barbie Hsu), who rides a crappy scooter to school. Right off the bat we realize that the school caters to the rich and the elite, where students are decked out in designer wear and get NT500000 (~ USD16000) nose jobs during the school holidays.

The fashion rivalry between classmates Bai He (Belinda Cheng) and Qian Hui (Zhang Ruo Zhen) cracks me up. It's petty, exaggerated, and deliciously obnoxious, solidly setting us viewers up with the premise of a school drama about rich kids.

A very normal Li Zhen (An-ting Yeh) appears to be Shan Cai's classmate and friend. She's pretty serious about her homework, having borrowed extra books to read up for the upcoming report assignment. Shan Cai laughs that Li Zhen might be the only student serious about studying in this school, everyone else comes to socialize instead. I’m guessing Li Zhen is on scholarship and needs to maintain her grades.

We cut to a classroom with a boy clearing out his books in order to drop out of the school. A crowd forms around him and the teacher (Bu Xue Liang) approaches to find out why he is leaving and to persuade him not to. However, upon finding out that the boy had offended F4, the teacher doesn't push the matter and instead encourages the boy to leave. Shan Cai watches helplessly from the sidelines and rolls her eyes at the hypocritical teacher.

In class, in a further act of hypocrisy, the teacher gives a lecture on the value of conscience.

Conscience. It's what we call 'moral courage'. It's the most basic quality mankind should have. In Chinese history, Confucius had the strongest conscience. Today, we'll discuss his core thinking. It focuses on benevolence. By benevolence, it means you do unto others what you would want them to do unto to you.

Unable to stomach his empty words, Shan Cai leaves the classroom in a huff. She heads to the roof launching a tirade against the unfairness of the University and coins the term "Pig Head 4". "So what if your family owns the school," she declares. "You better not mess with me. I'll never submit to you."

The 4 in question are just arriving at the University in their comfortable chauffeured rides. We get to watch the boys saunter around and the camera obliges with close ups on each one of them as they stride into campus.

Shan Cai and friend watch in horror as the teacher accidentally bumps into Dao Ming Si, spilling coke all over him. Apologizing frantically, he kneels over Dao Ming Si, attempting to wipe the soda off his shoes. Dao Ming Si ignores his apologies and we get to hear his trademark catchphrase, "If apologizing is enough, what do we need police for?"

Dao Ming Si waves the teacher off to the side and viciously kicks over the basket of balls while striding off. Shan Cai gapes in amazement at his arrogance. Suddenly, a hand reaches out to righten the fallen basket. It's Hua Ze Lei (known as Lei to his friends), who has a perpetually blank expression on his face and appears to be the only member of the F4 who isn't a douche. While adjusting the basket, he turns and makes brief eye contact with Shan Cai, then hurries off after Dao Ming Si.

At the cafe where Shan Cai works part time, she complains to her co-worker Xiao You (Rainie Yang) about her awful school and the awful boys. It’s exposition time! We learn that F4 Stands for Flower 4, and the boys belong to 4 rich and influential families who own the school. When Xiao You prompts her to confirm that the boys are really all that bad, Shan Cai hesitates and says that maybe one of the 4 is “different”. Methinks she’s starting to have a crush on someone!

As the two continue their conversation, we learn that Shan Cai used to be very outspoken against bullies, in contrast with her current passive nature. Xiao You remarks that she hardly recognizes the Shan Cai now. Inwardly, Shan Cai agrees, hating herself for turning into a coward.

When Shan Cai returns home, she makes an attempt to tell her family she doesn’t want to continue studying at this school. Unfortunately, her mother would hear nothing of it. Turns out her mother had pulled strings to get her daughter into the elite Yingde University. Her mother is fixated on Shan Cai getting a good boyfriend from school and networking well with people from high society so that their family can ascend into a higher social strata. Shan Cai’s poor dad gets berated by his wife for not getting a promotion for the past many years, unlike their neighbors. As the parents bicker, the resentments pile up, making for very awkward dinner conversation. In order to pacify them, Shan Cai promises that she would continue to study at Yingde University.

What a weird couple.

That evening, the F4 hang out at a bar. The boys appear unaccustomed to such a venue, noting with puzzlement that the establishment doesn't serve foie gras or vintage wine. We get to hear them in conversation for the first time ever, teasing Dao Ming Si about his unruly hair and his rigorous hairstyling session to tame it. Lei remains ever silent, using only a thumbs down gesture to communicate his opinion on Dao Ming Si’s new hairstyle. Throughout the night, he keeps staring at his mobile, as if awaiting a call.

It turns out that the boys are only there because Xi Men's latest girl wanted to meet Xi Men at the bar. Which begs the question - why are the other 3 following Xi Men on his date?! In any case, according to show logic, it’s the right course of action as everyone is present when the loser boyfriend of Xi Men’s girl shows up with a gang of hooligans and causes a scene. The boys slip into action and begin beating up the hooligans. All except Lei, who gets up and slips the owner of the bar NT15000 (~USD500) for the damages before leaving.

The next day at school, Shan Cai stands up for Li Zhen who had accidentally tripped and spilled dirt all over Dao Ming Si. I actually feel sorry for the poor dude who keeps getting things spilled on him. To put a stop to Li Zhen’s apologies, Dao Ming Si does his usual rough shove and pushes Li Zhen into the wall, incurring the wrath of Shan Cai. She shouts at him, calling him a parasite leeching off his parents and declares that the F4 should be called Pig Head 4. Dao Ming Si announces that she has some nerve and stalks away. As the four boys walk past, she thinks to herself that she's going to be dead meat.

At home, she receives zero support from her parents when she mentions once again that she wants to quit school. Instead her manipulative mother fakes a panic attack that miraculously subsides when Shan Cai promises to finish her studies. That night, Shan Cai sleeps restlessly, dreaming of being tormented.

At school, Shan Cai receives the F4 red card and a series of montages show how her life becomes hell. Everyone shuns her, even Li Zhen and Shan Cai is subjected to prank after prank. Finally, a drenched and annoyed Shan Cai escapes to the roof. She leans over the ledge and yells her heart out, cursing the Pig Head 4 with bankruptcy and high cholesterol, for their bodies to be ripped apart by horses and their souls to go to hell. Haha, how inventive. She doesn’t realize that Lei was on the roof too, privy to her outburst. She startles when he asks her if there was anything else. What a delightfully awkward moment. Shan Cai backs away warily as Lei leans forward, but he was only offering her his handkerchief. She accepts it and dabs at her wet hair. Softening up to Lei, she thanks him and begins to apologies for her earlier curses. However Lei cuts her short saying “I’m not interested in other people’s business.” He turns to leave and Shan Cai makes to return him the handkerchief. He ignores the gesture and tells her to throw it away as it is already garbage anyway.

What an awful thing for Shan Cai to hear. He is insinuating that because she used the handkerchief, the handkerchief no longer has any value to him and deserves to be in the trash. Shan Cai thinks back to her earlier assessment of Lei and concludes that he must not be so different from the other 3 after all.

The episode ends with Shan Cai heading home with her scooter. Except this time she has to wheel it along the road because her fellow students had damaged it. A flashy convertible pulls up beside her, and Dao Ming Si leans out to gloat at her. He tells her that he’s impressed with her determination, and will work harder to humiliate her.

Episode 1: Thoughts

Oh where do I begin! This episode does a good job of setting up so many interesting characters, especially the F4. Dao Ming Si appears cocky and rude, but he's the quintessential bad boy. I fully expect a redeeming arc on how he is actually a big softie. In contrast, Lei is mysterious and charming. I wonder what's the story behind his anti social behavior. The other two members kind of fade into the background as we haven't actually seen them do anything except pose and strut around. As for our heroine, Shan Cai, I suppose she's relatable enough as a first lead. We’ve met her family, schoolmates and friends and have a decent insight into her motivations for her actions. I'm so excited for her to show some spunk and challenge the boys to a showdown soon.

Despite being 18 years old, the show retains its charm. Unfortunately, fashion-wise the show has not aged well at all. What we have here is literally a time capsule of dated 90s trends such as spaghetti strap tops, rebonded hair and frameless spectacles. Plus Dao Ming Si’s ridiculous bandanna is just absurd.

We know in hindsight that this show kickstarted the entertainment careers of these 4 actors of F4. In 2001, after Meteor Garden aired, Sony Music Taiwan signed the 4 boys as an actual boyband bearing the name F4. It’s amazing how these formerly virtually unknown 4 individuals owe their success to this show.

As someone who is strongly multi-fandom, I’m going to keep this as unbiased as possible here. The group doesn’t have much time left, so I’d say give this a go. It won’t take long to read.

Lately we’ve been seeing a lot of interactions between Wanna One and other (especially male) idol groups.

So, a lot of us Wannables have become increasingly multi-fandom (more than we were already: nobody begins their run with kpop with a survival show) - but, alas, we have found that a LOT of people from international k-pop fandoms, for some unknown reason, hate Wanna One with a burning passion.

For the relatively small international fandom, the amount of international hate towards Wanna One is overwhelming and hard to deal with.

So, without further ado, let me clear up some of the misconceptions you may have about the group!

Wanna One is friends with or looks up to the GROUPS YOU STAN.

tl;dr they friendly. Wannables know this, so a lot of us are multifandom - after all, not many people got into kpop BECAUSE of Produce 101. A lot of us have been around for a while and stan other groups.

Why do international fans hate Wanna One?

tl;dr Essentially, Wanna One is really popular in Korea - and not internationally - so the international fans hate them, pretty much because they’re successful. Large biased, sh*t reporting media sites like Allkpop and Netizenbuzz recognize this, and spew out bad articles on them with wrong translations and incorrect info because it gets them attention

Produce 101 season 2, the group that formed Wanna One, was hugely popular in Korea, not so much internationally. A large part of this may be because international fans couldn’t vote in the show

After produce 101 finished airing, it was obvious Wanna One would be popular in Korea. However, a lot of international fans didn’t know about this

So, when Wanna One debuted, their popularity was obviously very high. They began playing with the best, with groups that had been around for years

This resulted in the Wanna One members being called ungrateful, achieving fame “too fast”, even though it’s just a different means of getting there.

All of these boys weren’t just lucky. They worked extremely hard in their own way to get to this point, and they are aware that the group isn’t permanent. They know that it’s not going to all be smooth sailing from here - they’ve written songs on the impermanence of this feeling (see: hourglass, forever+1, always, I promise you, hell they have an album called “nothing without you”)

Sungwoon, Minhyun - both in “unsuccessful” groups for years before (Hotshot, Nu’est), had to strip off their “idol” image and perform as “trainees”

Daniel, Jisung - trainees for years under an unknown entertainment label (MMO) that likely wouldn’t have debuted them but instead used them for backup dancers (Daniel was actually going to leave to live in Canada - pd101 was his last resort, Jisung would have had to go to the military)

Jihoon, Jinyoung - have you ever heard of maroo or c9 entertainment? Likely would have debuted into a no name group

Daehwi, Woojin - Daehwi has already gotten so much hate from the start of the show even though he’s already 16, yet remained positive. Woojin rose from the 70s rank up until 6 through hard work alone.

Guanlin - moved from Taiwan by himself at 16 without knowing Korean to pursue his dream, is always showing thanks to fans, trying to speak in both English and Taiwanese as well

Jaehwan - won an entire TV show but nobody paid attention to him. Busked on the streets.

Seongwoo - nobody can deny that he is always thinks of the fans. writes his own freaking poetry for us

All of them always express their thanks to the fans, and even the man of the year, Kang Daniel, is commonly reported by outside sources (producers, tv show directors, other idols, etc) as simple - friendly and humble. Even though he’s always tired and in the public’s eye, he is one of the most active members on fancafe, even tries to respond to foreign fans in English

Haven’t they been involved with a lot of controversies?

Sites like Allkpop and Netizenbuzz just add fuel to the fire, releasing articles on untrue information, and then not releasing articles quickly or at all on clarifications

Also YMC/Swing sucks and doesn’t protect the boys (literally and figuratively) or the fandom. Instead of explaining situations or taking legal actions, they will either use the boys as a shield for their own mistakes, or force the boys to apologize for things they didn’t do.

Wannables in their natural habitat are fighting YMC (and now Swing entertainment) for something or the other. Right now the big deal is that Swing has banned fansites from taking pictures and Wannables are irate af lemme tell u

Wannables are a toxic fandom.

This is something that gets thrown around a LOT. But in reality, most wannables are very multi-fandom. I will repeat it for a third time: nobody starts liking K-Pop because of a survival show, especially internationally. A lot of us are fans of other groups, so it sucks when our other home fandoms reject us.

The international Wannable community is extremely small (case in point: the company reducing the concert venue sizes by thousands in the US due to tickets not selling). This means our influence is also very small. It’s very unlikely that you have experienced such toxicity from a true Wannable.

On the topic of akgaes: look we don’t like them either, but even though the show was based on voting for your fave, most Wannables aren’t hating on the groupmates and literal friends of their biases. You could help us get rid of this image by promoting ot11!

KWannables are commonly seen supporting other groups, because they are very well aware of the fact that Wanna One is friends with/looks up to/likes other kpop groups.

They don’t want the group to disband. Of course, there’s a part of every Wannable that dreads that day. But, most of us understand that there’s more waiting for them, and we’ll continue to support in the future!

There’s more to say. But life and Wanna One’s run are both too short to spend hating a group of sweet, talented boys. There’s so much toxicity in K-pop. Imagine how your bias would feel if they knew you were attacking their friends or people that look up to them.

There Are Actually Principles for Making Offerings to God （part 1）

Because of some trouble at home, in 1997 I began to believe in the Lord Jesus. Afterward, through practicing the Lord’s words, there was no longer any arguing at home. The Lord saved my family, saved me from my pain and gave me hope in life.

I remember the first time I went to a meeting at a church. The pastor read chapter 12, verses 1 to 8 from the Gospel of John, and he preached about Mary anointing the Lord Jesus with perfumed oil, as well as the offering made by the poor widow and, after I’d heard these stories, I felt very moved. The pastor said to us: “Brothers and sisters, in our belief in the Lord, we must be like Mary and the poor widow, and we must make more offerings to the Lord. The poor widow made an offering to the Lord of her money for food, and Mary used a jar of very valuable nard to anoint the Lord. That is to say, Mary took the best thing she possessed, the most valuable thing, and offered it up to the Lord, and this kind of action is what the Lord finds most acceptable and praiseworthy. Therefore, the more money we offer, the more treasures we will accumulate in heaven. People who do this are most blessed by the Lord, and only people like this can receive a hundredfold in this life and gain eternal life in the world to come….” After the meeting, I saw many brothers and sisters walk over to the offering box and put money inside, and I thought: “The Lord Jesus died nailed upon the cross so that mankind could be redeemed, and He has now saved me from my pain, so I should make more offerings to the Lord to repay His love. From now on, I’ll be like the poor widow and Mary, and love the Lord by offering my money. By doing this, the Lord will be gladdened and the pastor will like me too.”

From then on, I practiced in accordance with what the pastor had preached, and I used the money I would ordinarily be saving especially as an offering to the Lord.

I remember, not long after I’d first started believing in the Lord, it just so happened to be Christmas. On Christmas evening, I went to church and made an offering of 500 yuan, which was all the money that I’d managed to save on food and expenses. A pastor who had come from another church saw me offering so much money and he happily blessed me, and prayed to the Lord to bestow great blessings on me. Seeing how delighted the pastor was at my offering, I thought: “Since the pastor is so happy with my offering, the Lord will surely accept it!” When I thought of the Lord accepting my offering, my heart felt incomparable sweetness. In the days that followed, I was even more active in offering money; as long as I had even a little money on hand, I would offer it, and, without fail, I continued to make offerings. The church’s pastor also lavished praise on me, and often prayed for me to be blessed. During that time, I lived constantly within my own conceptions and imaginings, believing that as long as I offered lots of money, the pastor would be happy, the Lord Jesus would surely praise me, and I would be someone who most delighted the Lord.

Later, however, the pastors and elders became jealous of each other, and they argued and became divided in their struggle over position and offerings, which resulted in the church being in total chaos, and I couldn’t perceive any peace and joy of the Holy Spirit’s presence. Witnessing this spectacle, I couldn’t help but feel bitterly disappointed, and I left the Three-Self Church and went to other denominations in search of the Lord’s footsteps. I went to the Justification by Faith Church, the Local Churches, and other denominations, but no matter which church I went to, I saw that their circumstances were all pretty much the same. Furthermore, I always heard the pastors preach the doctrine of making offerings, appealing to believers to make more offerings so that they could attain more of the Lord’s blessings, and so I always made offerings to the churches without fail. I saw that the pastors and elders always liked people who made offerings and were always willing to pray for blessings upon those who made constant offerings, so I believed that the pastors’ actions were correct.

In 2012, a sister passed on to me the kingdom gospel of Almighty God. Through seeking and investigating, I ascertained that Almighty God was indeed the returned Lord Jesus, and so I began to live the church life. I thought: “I’ve believed in the Lord all these years and I’ve always made offerings. Now, at last, I welcome the return of the Lord, and I want even more to make lots of offerings, and thereby repay God’s love.” But I discovered that The Church of Almighty God had no offering boxes, and I thought: “Why do the pastors and elders in religion always preach the doctrine of making offerings, when the people in charge in The Church of Almighty God aren’t concerned with this matter?” Although I had some ideas of my own, seeing the brothers and sisters all living out a pious life, all dedicating and expending themselves in order to spread the gospel and bear witness for God and preparing good deeds, I felt very moved, and still I wanted to offer some money to prepare good deeds.

One time, I saw Sister Yang from the church exhausting herself by spreading the gospel, so I took 300 yuan and gave it to her as an expression of support for the gospel work, and I also made an offering to God of the money I’d saved. Unexpectedly, Sister Yang said to me very earnestly: “Sister Li, everything we do in The Church of Almighty God has a principle behind it, including the offering of money. I cannot just take your money.”

Hearing her say this, I felt very puzzled, and thought: “Making offerings to God is perfectly justified. Didn’t believers in the Lord always make offerings in religion? What principles are needed?” And so I said: “While I have believed in the Lord, I have been to meetings at other churches, and the pastors there would often preach the doctrine of making offerings, and would appeal to brothers and sisters to offer their money. I also frequently made offerings. But I’ve never heard any pastor preach about any principles concerning offering money. Is there any difference between The Church of Almighty God and other denominations when it comes to offering money?”

Sister Yang said amiably: “It’s fitting that we should make offerings to God, and it is the duty that we, as created beings, should perform. But there are principles to making offerings, and even more so there are truths to be sought. Let’s first look at the church’s principles for offering money: ‘All those who believe in God know very clearly that God’s work requires the coordination of people, and it requires leaders and workers from all levels of the church to supply, water, and guide God’s chosen people in maintaining God’s work. The expansion of God’s gospel of the kingdom requires God’s chosen people to run around and expend themselves; in addition, the various books of God’s word and of communication of truths used by God’s chosen people require printing and distributing. Therefore, God’s work of salvation pays a price for each and every one of God’s chosen people who receive God’s work, and all such expenses are supported by the offerings that God’s chosen people make to God. As a result, God has expectations for all God’s chosen people, and offering to God is a duty and obligation of created beings, and expending themselves for God is the responsibility that they should fulfill. This is justified and obligatory. Everyone should offer up their share for God’s work, regardless of how each person understands this matter. Some insist on making an offering of ten percent, while others contribute in different ways. As long as it is being offered willingly, God will gladly accept it. God’s house only specifies that those who have only believed in God for less than a year are temporarily exempt from providing any offerings, while poor people are not required to provide any offerings but can make offerings according to their faith. The church will not accept offerings that might lead to family disputes. Those making an offering of money must pray several times, and only after they are sure they are completely willing and are certain they will never have any regrets are they to be allowed to make their offerings…. The principles for making offerings are: You must know God’s work, can see that you have come to a real understanding of the truths through your faith in God, know how to live as a human, walk the path of attaining salvation, feel that you are in debt to God for His love, and that you must fulfill your duties as a man such that your conscience will feel at ease. If you then make offerings at this time, you shall be completely willing, while at the same time, you will feel enjoyment and comfort because you have conscience and reason. If someone has believed in God for many years, yet does not feel that he is a pursuer of the truth and that he will attain salvation, then he has no need to make any offerings, for he will not be completely willing even if he should make any offerings…. The church does not allow anyone to ask others to make offerings through preaching or any other reason. All those who are keen to talk about making offerings have ulterior motives. ARCHIVE INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTOR DAVID FURLONG/EXCHANGE THEATRE Moliere’s MISANTHROPE including performances in both French and English Drayton Arms Theatre 13 June – 8 July 2017 Presented by Exchange Theatre Off West End Best Director nominee David Furlong, chats with us about his unique approach, fresh from his stint at the Royal Opera House. The play is being presented to coincide with Bastille Day. What does this anniversary mean to you? Last year was very significant for us as we were on stage during the Nice attacks. It brought us together in the face of tragedy and it reminded us of the deeper meaning of the day, as a celebration of a unified France. As there are around 500,000 French people in London, it can be important to feel together. The Drayton Arms Pub always plays along with us and put a special dish on their menu. Growing up in Mauritius with Indian origins, (and being bi-lingual English and French), is Moliere an important part of your cultural heritage? When I moved to France as a teenager and started drama, then Moliere became very important in my training. Just like Shakespeare is the epitomy of English theatre, Moliere represents the essence of French theatre. As I trained in the National Theatre of Chaillot, it really became part of my DNA. A decade later, when I moved to London, I could sense that the work of Moliere and many other major French writers were rarely produced in Britain. And I think that because I grew up on a cultural bridge, I felt I could easily build one with my company and start bringing French-speaking plays in the Uk. It took us nine years before we actually did a Moliere. Having trained in France at the prestigious National Theatre, are you bringing a particularly French take on The Misanthrope? Or other influences? I don't have so much a French approach than one that is fed by theatre-makers who are seeking the same contemporary relevance. Also, part of my training was in improvisation, and led me to perform ten years in Street theatre shows in France. This also had a huge influence on my work as a director because the actors are at the centre of the work, in their need to create bigger than life figures. Do you find having experience as an actor, changes your approach as a director? How? My experience makes me put the actors at the centre of my work: I take almost everything from their 'impulse' as they rehearse. For my part, it's crucial and empowering for actors. Also, acting is seeking the truth in dialogues, and as a director I will always look beyond a formal shape of a scene, and I won't be satisfied with scenes where I can feel that more can be done to reach the true multi-layered meaning of the lines, even if the scene looks really good. You’re also a French translator. What’s your approach to translating plays and are you picky about who translated the Misanthrope? The vocation of the company is to produce faithful translations. Over the ten years we’ve been translating French plays to English, we’ve experimented with several different approaches: we worked with a university professor on our Claudel piece, I updated an old translation for Sartre’s ‘The Flies’, we’ve workshopped the play with actors for a more contemporary writer, and we also sometimes found an original translation that worked perfectly. So, with this important body of translated works behind me now, I decided I would be able to come up with a version that combines the best of previous translations. Of the language of the play, of course, but also its spirit. Our company is comprised entirely of fully-bilingual people, some of them Franco-British, so when we have doubts about a line, we always look back to Moliere’s original words. Any language has echoes and nuances, so it’s essential for us to have a bilingual team that really understands both cultures intimately. What do you see as the heart of the play? It is a (bitter) comedy about Alceste, an honourable and outspoken man who is in love with Célimene, a bright but slightly vain socialite. It's originally set at the King's Court, in a world of gossips and of people going on trial for anything they say. In our world of permanent fast breaking news and social networks, the play finds unanticipated echo today, as we transform the 17th century society salon into a contemporary newsroom. The play, seen too often only as a deep philosophical essay, is also a very concrete and funny take on justice, the news, the gossips and our own emptiness. What are you particularly looking forward to in directing this production? What was the most astonishing is to see how relevant the play is today and how our relationship to news or gossip is just the same as it was in the 17th century. For me, the only difference is that now everything is public, and people are willingly exposing their lives on Facebook live or Instagram 'stories', so in addition to Moliere's take on falseness, I am exploring this idea that nothing ever happens privately, any action is always relayed online, on a screen or seen from behind a window ... So, the production took naturally the direction of a world of medias and videos, just by following Moliere's humour and criticism of his times. What’s your approach as director? An image on a stage can be anything as long as you can clearly connect the story being told, to what you see. I inherit this idea mostly from Opera directors such as Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser whom I had the chance to assist at the Royal Opera House, but also from French-Canadian Robert Lepage or from Daniel Kramer who now runs the ENO. I was only an actor in my twenties when I discovered this operatic approach, and I went from seeing the stage from my personal performer's perspective to understanding a global view of a stage on a much bigger scale. In Opera, you have to offer such a definite and strong take on the piece. I've also had ongoing training through Young Vic directors program, Living Pictures and a general openness to discover new territories all the time. Through training, devising, experimenting, researching, crafting and developing my work with others, it finally reached a shape of its own, always evolving. Many of the cast are bi-lingual and some are French. Will there be marked differences between the English version and French? The two versions are exact mirror images of the same production. So, we work at finding the same actions and intentions for the actors. Sometimes the French language is more straight than English and helps us to find something more direct, whilst sometimes, the musicality that you find in English feeds the French version by adding colors and layers. We reach for very singular profiles of actors: who generally have parents of two different origins, who grew up being multi-lingual, in a place which isn't their parent's culture, mostly. They fit a recently-named group called third-culture people and they've been used all their life to shift from one state-of-mind or culture to the other. They also bring a great variety of identities to the piece. It's not related so much to the French identity than the French-speaking world and the language we have in common. We have an Iranian Célimene, a Mauritian Alceste, an Ivorian-Swiss Oronte, an Italian-French Acaste, as well as Anglo-French people. It simply reflects better the time we live in! In your experience does a French audience respond differently to an English audience. From experience on our previous Moliere and 'A Family affair' three years ago, the first thing you notice is that the two audience laugh at very different moments, they are not shocked by the same moments, or the same events. Which audience will be the most appreciative, the English or the French (And is diplomacy your thing!)? Both audience are equally important for us. The English theatre audience is adventurous and I am certain our work at crossing cultural boundaries could not have existed elsewhere than London. Equally, the French community is a very supportive base. The lungs of our work are French and the heart of our art is English and they're both equally important to create life for us. Day Four - Long Distance

“Mon petit chaton, you’re never going to be able to glare the Alps into submission.”

“Fuck off, you massive pervert.”

“I would, but you’re in my favorite fucking spot.” Chris punctuated his sentence with a flirty wink, casting doubt onto Yuri’s firmly held belief that Chris did not have outdoor sex in the area Yuri was sitting in. Just to be contrary, he held his ground and did not budge. Chris, the bastard, chuckled and settled himself beside Yuri.

The sound of belled cows far below filled the air, carried on the wind and buoyed up the slopes of the mountain Chris - or his whatever - had a chalet on. The rocky slopes stretched down far into the distant town, worlds away at this height.

Yuri broke the companionable silence first, “Aren’t you supposed to be doing wedding shit right now or something?”

Chris laughed, loud and full, and it seemed to fill the air further than at normal altitudes. He quickly sobered, “I am, but at the same time ....” He quickly pursed his lips and then dropped the expression, looking almost guilty.

Yuri clicked his tongue, irritated, resettling himself into the curl over his knees, arms crossed and moody. “Goddamned Viktor, right?”

Chris blinked blankly at the hooded teen. “No, it was the florist.”

A fine blonde eyebrow ticked upwards, “Just the florist?”

Chris huffed, “The florist and the baker and the tailor. All at once.”

Yuri snorted, “This is why Russian weddings are better. Apply for a date with the registry, go register on the appointed date, then throw a party.”

Chris frowned, “Then why was Viktor talking about a ransom?”

Yuri waved his hand in the universal extraneous things gesture, “ Eh, more of the old tradition than required. Because Baldie can’t help but be stupidly romantic in all the wrong ways.” Yuri paused, then blurted wild-eyed and horrified, “Please don’t let Viktor demand a ransom.”

Chris nodded gravely, “I threatened him with refusing to let him anywhere near Yuuri for the rest of the wedding if he tried.”

Yuri grinned, a quicksilver sliver of a thing, then settled back into the companionable silences Chris seemed to carry in his bones. Well, that and wildly flagrant sexuality oozing everywhere.

It could have been minutes or it could have been hours later when Chris asked, “You know, mon chaton, they say that the only people who stare out at the Alps are the lovelorn.”

Yuri turned his head to stare at the blond balefully, unimpressed. “No one says that.”

Chris gracefully shrugged, “No, but I do, and I am a ‘they’. So tell me, mon petit chat, what’s got you frustrated?” When Yuri didn’t respond, he nodded sagely, “Ah, it is the issue of Love. The long distance relationship?”

The glare leveled at him told Chris everything. “Do you know what ‘yodeling’ is?”

Yuri’s blank stare was invitation enough, “It’s a type of singing, originating here in the mountains to communicate across distances. Very soothing. Want to learn?”

Sensing more than hearing the denial, Chris carried on, “The basic theory is to repeatedly and rapidly change register of singing from the lowest register to the highest pitch. Additionally, there are two different types of yodeling, one similiar to singing with words, and the other with just pitch changes with no words. Given you ability to split the air with curses without taking many breaths, perhaps you’ll have the lung capacity for the latter.” He forcefully clapped Yuri on the back, “After all, you’re not used to the high mountain air.”

“Po'shyol 'na hui,” Yuri threw back from where he was sprawled on the ground.

“Oh, Viktor never taught me that one! Remind me to ask him about it sometime?” Chris smiled easily. “In any case, let’s master the basics of yodeling, then add words! That last phrase should yodel perfectly!”

“So, where is Yurio? I haven’t felt his moping all day!” Viktor genially smiled over at Chris, from where he was doing his best koala impression.

“He’s busy screaming into a valley.” Chris smiled back at his long-time friend, sipping delicately at his espresso.

“Chris, why is Yurio screaming into a valley?” Yuuri tentatively asked, fingers batting uselessly at Viktor’s, which were stealing his small piece of sponge cake.

Chris stared at the pair guilelessly, “You dragged the poor chaton all the way to Switzerland for a wedding without thinking about the fact he’s on the outs with his sweetie? I knew the pair of you were frankly terrible with dealing with emotions, but this is a new low.” Then Chris turned back to watching his fiancé argue with the baker about the (frankly) appalling orange sponge.

So I came to Chris’ wedding to give the longest speech of my life. To you. Because for every single one of those miles on the plane from St. Petersberg to Almaty, I regretted not kissing you back, and I need you to know that.”

Shoes, essentially everyone has and for the most part people where them every day. For some they are just the thing you put on before you walk out of the door, for others its everything. Sneaker Culture is something that has fascinated me for a long time, I am a self-proclaimed sneakerhead and likely will be until the day I die. That all said I wanted to get down to the brass tacks of, what is sneaker culture? Well the term sneaker dates back to the early 1900s, sneakers where first introduced by yard workers who need a durable shoe with more comfort, traction, and durability than the typical leather shoe of the time. Design was primitive to say the least, worker would just dip the soles of their leather shoes into melted rubber. Thus, the birth of the sneaker (Duc Nhat Huy 6 and Chrisman-Campbell). This quietly caught fire and began sprawling into all facets of life. This first took traction in the tennis industry, but quickly broke out afterpeopl began to realize how versatile that sneakers are. Things really began to heat up with the birth of the Convers All-Star, coming out in 1917 the Chuck Taylor was the first signature sneaker. Breaking ground for athletes for the legendary shoe namesakes we know to today: Jordan, Kobe, etc.. Soon to follow came the break of musicians in the shoe industry. Some staple names to that break through would be RUN DCM, Kanye, and Drake. Today there is a sneaker for almost anything or anyone you can think of. Some might say you haven’t made it big until you have a shoe deal these days, no matter your industry. Others use the shoes made famous by other to immolate their identities to those around them.

Taking me for an example, I wear basketball shoes 85% of the time, but if you saw my jump shot, you’d likely wonder if I’ve ever even heard of the game. I am not alone, I’ve found that the culture has very strong roots in identity. While, yes, some basketball players will identify themselves by wearing Jordan brand, artist similarly will can identify with a Jordan shoe purely based on design. Rob Dyrdek, professional skate boarder and CO-Owner of DC Shoes was quoted in the documentary Sneakerheadz saying, “There are a handful of things that can define who you are without saying a word; shoes, are one of those things (Friendly and Partridge)”. People cling to shoes for certain things, sometime unbeknownst to them. Like how someone can be drawn to a painting not really understand why, shoes can speak to people. Those who are a part of the culture will fall in love with the design, the back story, the person, the era; and shoes become a direct connection to who they feel they are. Beyond that its and industry that is growing exponentially, as more people get involved it draws the attention of people who normally might not be exposed to sneaker culture. A great example of this is the collab’. A collab is when two companies work together to create a joint product, any time you see a brand that is mark BrandA x BrandB that is a collab. Collaborations do exactly what I noted above, bring people who might not be exposed to sneaker culture in by expanding sneaker cultures reach. When artists, musicians, fashion groups, companies, and other brands come together it opens the eye of the consumer (Friendly and Partridge). Another interesting thing about collabs, and most sought-after sneakers in general, is the idea of exclusivity. More often than not people in the sneaker industry want what others can’t have (Friendly and Partridge). Meaning if you can be one of a few thousand people in the world with a specific shoe, you are then above those who can’t have that shoe. This also lend to one of the most detrimental things sneaker culture faces today: violence. More often than not, shoes bring people together, but there has been multiple instances where people die over shoes. “The thirst for inherent exclusivity creates an innately competitive culture where the goal is naturally adversarial: if your friend has a dope exclusive shoe, then your search for a more exclusive (and therefore more desirable) shoe is an ongoing challenge” (Rakeshaw). Sadly, it’s the riots; murders; and theft that make it into the mass media, not the stories of growth and strengthening communities. This leaves people with a sour taste in their mouth because people question why we spend so much on shoes or why anyone would care so much as to harm someone over a pair of sneakers. Fortunately, things aren’t all bad. Shoes are becoming a universal language breaking barriers of race, gender, and ideology. Someday maybe sneakers will bring us piece.

Prior to continuing I’d like to elaborate on the means and location of which I acquired the information which this essay is comprised of. There is a mix of information both peer-reviewed and pop-culture reference which was acquired from a number of sources. Beginning with the Peer- reviewed information I tried my best to find sources that would contribute to the idea of sneaker culture, but because its both a abstract and non-academic subject this did prove to be difficult. This lent to out of the box thinking in order to find information that would directly correlate to my topic. My information came from many different places, from business thesis to art reviews. From medical journals to quasi-biographies. It became a matter of finding ways on which sneaker culture connected to the academic world as opposed to trying to find the academic world speaking on sneaker culture.

Then came my pop-culture refences, this was difficult too, but for a very different reason. I find myself so immersed daily in sneaker culture that I felt there might have even been too many source from which I could draw. Another problem with the sources I use everyday is they can be partial toward sneaker enthusiast. So, in order to find relevant and usable modern information, I tried to sample from a bread of sources. Some known for being very tight knit to the culture of shoes and fashion others being known simply for their literature. I found that there was a lot to be said about the industry outside of what I already knew. It was also intrigued to see all the different areas of research and life that sneakers manage to sneak their way into. Both types of sources brought together, I was able to find some strong corollaries that united all of the sources. These themes being Identity, Influence, and Value.

Identity, as I touched on before, is how people use shoes to tell a story of who they are. There is also some strong associations between certain types of shoes and certain types of people. Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell explains in her Atlantic article, “Sneakers Have Always Been Political Shoes”, as verity grew shoes took on different meaning, for example Vans and other canvas shoes became the staple shoes of youth rebellion (Chrisman-Campbell). There is also strong associations between race and gender identity within the shoe culture. Nike known for their many campaign that promote identity (equality line, pride line, Día de Los Muertos line), they are also on the forefront of introduction of women into the sneaker industry. With the sneaker industry being known as a boy’s club for such a long time, this is huge. Next comes Influence.

Influence is arguably the basis of sneaker culture as we know it today. Many of the shoes we as consumer like are because of who we see where them. Whether it be celebrities, aspirational groups, or identity groups we wear the shoes that will bring us closer to them. According to a thesis written by Rodney M. Miller, we can attribute the growth of the industry to three key components: physical activity, professional sport, and hip hop culture (Miller VII). From this we find the fame of Lebron shoes, the shell toe adidas in relation to RUN DMC, and the popularity of Nike Air max shoes for everyday use. How we view these influencers can also relate to how we value shoes.

Value of shoes is actually an interesting topic. With cites like StockX that value shoes as stocks where you can view market trends and fluctuation of individual shoes and the entire universe that is the resale market we have been able to see insane value coming out of the shoe industry. The high end sneaker market runs on an ideology contrary to that of typical business. Where a normal business you try and make supply meet demand, in the shoe industry the limit supply. Since there is no drop in demand this leads to astronomical resale prices. The other thing is that we value shoes beyond a monetary value, because of the two other things I discussed shoes mean more than money to us. Where some one might see something you step on, a sneakerhead sees a piece of art you can put on your feet. This about concludes the secondary research, to come is the primary portion of my research.

As far as primary research goes, mine was three-fold. Comprised of an Online survey, Video Interview, and a in person observation. The online survey was held through Google forms, comprised of twelve question and distributed by link to my respondents. All responses were acquired online and done so anonymously. The one hundred respondents ages varied, done so because sneaker culture is not limited to a single demographic, and I was curious to see how response varied across demographics like region, race, and age. The interview is to be held was held Via Skype with a close friend and fellow sneakerhead, the interview is comprised of 6 questions and further discussion. Lastly, the in-person observation was held inside of the Anderson Academic commons on the University of Denver’s campus on the afternoon of October 24th, 2019. Shoes worn by people entering the library was documented on a purely observational basis, there was no interaction with the population. Data was then combed in search of trends, such as opinions of sneaker culture, and attempt to define sneaker culture, and anything lending to the themes provided by the secondary research.

Beginning with my observation, I sat across from the entrance to the Anderson Academic Commons on the University of Denver’s campus with a piece of paper marking the shoes of everyone who entered in a twenty-minute period in one of two categories. One category was the brands Nike, Adidas, and Vans; the other simply was other. Its important to know that I also put well know companies that fall under the Nike and Adidas (Jordan, Converse, Yeezy, and Pharrell) in the Nike, Adidas, and Vans category. Over the course of the twenty minutes I observed one-hundred twelve people entering or exiting the library. Of those 68% of those observed fell under the Nike, Adidas, and Vans category. I found this surprising, the number seemed low to me. One thing that needs severe consideration is the fact that the city of Denver did receive snowfall that day. This may lend those viewed to wear shoes with either better traction or those that people would have less worry of damaging. That said I still think nearly 70% is a significant number to observe wearing those brands I associate with sneakers. Another thing to note is there other brands that can and would be consider sneakers that I did not place under the category. For example, Puma and New Balance are notorious for being sneaker companies but would not fall under the category Nike, Adidas, and Vans. In conclusion id derive from my observation that a majority of people entering the library wear sneakers, and in turn have some semblance of a affiliation to sneaker culture. What I would not do is use this observation to draw any hard statistic to the size of sneaker culture of what brands are to be considered sneakers.

Next we’ll discussed what I observed from surveying. The survey began with demographic question Age, Race, Gender, and location of origin. This information only helped me with identifying who I sampled, unfortunately the results aren’t put into a format that didn’t lends its self to identify specific trends based on certain demographic variables. This would have been more fruitful in terms of seeing trends in identity and how background affects opinion, but what can be said is the sample was was predominantly between the ages of 18 and 25. The sample was slightly more Male than Female, the majority of those identifing as White or Caucasian. Then lastly majority of our sample claimed to be from the western United States, this is likely due to the fat that the majority of respondents were located in Colorado. As stated one can understand our sample as a whole, just not specific correlations based on demographic response.

The questions that followed demographic, these could still almost be considered demographic question, but demographic question specific to shoes. From this I was found that my sample strongly favored Nike over any other brand of shoe.

The second question was pertaining to how many shoes they personally own, but the responses were about evenly distributed, 38.7%said they owned between 5 and 10 pair.

The next group of questions were seeking information about Identity. Both were free response questions, but majority of people said roughly, Sneaker Culture is a collection of people with a shared interest in shoes, and that a persons shoes tell mostly what their style is and what their personality is like.

I concluded by asking questions regarding value. There was an interesting change between what people have spent and what they would be willing to spend on shoes.

While the majority of people have spent between $100 and $200 on shoes, a lot more would rather pay less as well as some would be willing to spend more. It would be interesting to know what outside factors contributed to the change in between question, perhaps outside influence such as an outside party purchasing the shoes is responsible for the change.

Interview

The interview process was conduct with Michael Sullivan. Michael is an Omaha, Nebraska native who found their passion for shoes during high school. He has not only an extensive collection, but a valuable one. He went on to say, “I begged my dad for my first pair of Jordan’s when I got to high school and saw the praise that other people got for having them… it seemed like people wearing [nice shoes] weren’t even walking on the same ground as us”. Now a days Michaels passion is less about clout and more about how the shoes make him feel. While when his passion started, he favored brands like Nike and Jordan, today Michael wears exclusively Adidas. Michael can identify with creators/designer/influencer Kanye and Pharrell, because “They seem to have shoes with purpose.” He went on to talk about what goes into deciding the shoes he buys and further on how he feels about sneaker culture. In this continued conversation he brought up two points absent from the rest of the body of research. Those being the industry of counterfeit shoes and shoes across cultures. Beginning with the counterfeits Michael talked about how anyone can get them, and sometime people get them when they think they are buying authentic. For this reason, Michael buys his shoes exclusively through sites which have a shoe verification process (i.e. StockX and GOAT). He said having authentic shoes are so important to him because he, “buys [his] shoes for [him]self”, then going on to elaborate that people who buy fakes do so because they want others to see that they have a particular shoe. Then moving on the culture, this came up when Michael was asked what is one of your best memories related to shoes. Michael tells an anecdote about a time when he was working as a roofing consultant. In this firm many of the workers were immigrants (mostly Latino and Sudanese) who couldn’t speak very much English, but when ever he wore nice shoes to work, they would notice and make it a point to compliment them and try their best to hold conversation. Michael said, “It was crazy to see interested they were, most days the wouldn’t make any effort to talk to me, nor I to them, but for whatever reason shoe bridged that gap.”

The shoe industry is one rife with history and cult followings, that biggest and most diverse of those following probably being that which has been being defined: Sneaker Culture. The special thing I’ve noticed is that in this community anyone can be a player. Whether you have 3 pairs or 3000, been collecting a life time or a week, and whether you buy Jordan or Adidas; the community will welcome you with open arms. One could venture to say it’s because sneakerheads comprehend that it’s the uniqueness of their beliefs that make not only them unique, but their style. Throughout the both the body of research and secondary research, a very common them has been what your shoes say about you, how shoes reflect your identity.

Shoes are designed with a story or purpose in mind, those who are passionate about them with infer those stories or sometimes identify things that never crossed the designers mind. Those who really care can see themselves in the design of a shoe. Whether it be the passion the feel towards the beliefs of a brand, the back story of the designer, or someone that they’ve seen wearing the shoe, these all contribute to the story behind why people buy sneakers. For some they want to be seen as stylish or wealthy, others fascinate over the design elements. The important thing to take away though is that no matter what they see they identify in the shoe, it resonates in how they identify themselves, thus giving sneakers a deeper meaning than just what you wear to walk outside. That deeper meaning is also part of the reason people value their shoes.

As previously noted value can come from a number of places, but one of the most common ways its facilitated is by limiting quantity. Previously noted is an article the referenced that this competitiveness to have a shoe only few can get makes consumers resort back to a primal state, but what hasn’t been discussed is how this contributes to diversity of collection. Because not everyone can get every sneaker that releases, people obviously ended up not having the same shoes. This opens doors for people to not only appreciate other people’s collections, but why they ended up with the shoes that they did buy. This opportunity for conversation is one of the things that makes the sneaker community so tight knit, there is an opportunity for dialogue and variable opinion.
