The world building and characterization is just absolutely mindblowing. I adored getting to see reader adjust to life post-Cognitive Dissonance. I'm hoping we get a pretty good insight into what Jack has been doing for the last year. I fucking love that they reunite exactly one year after their previous meeting ugh. I'm so fucking excited for this series, LJ, you fucking genius <3

I'd say... a solid 7? I usually edit a bit as I go, simply because I might come up with something that impacts a situation that happened earlier and I need to go back and change that while I remember it. I also edit once I'm done to try and catch any left behind half-finished sentences. It's good, it meeds to be done, but sometimes I feel like I need to know when to stop before I veer off and edit things into oblivion.

how do you keep finding these incredibly niche and incredibly awesome aesthetics

omg WELL, I will try to be concise here!!

basically it started because I got really into vaporwave relatively early in its existence, I think I discovered it in around 2013. Now, something about there being an entire online named Artistic Movement with clear design principles was extremely cool to me, and 2013 is also the earliest I can find a use of the term “junglepunk” on my blog, because this is the term I was using as a personal placeholder for the type of stuff that I have since discovered is being called utopian scholastic. I figured, if there wasn’t a “vaporwave” equivalent for the art/media niche I remembered so vividly, I would just call it something of my own.

So, I came to this newer discovery because in the decade since getting into vaporwave I’ve followed just… so many aesthetic blogs. One of my absolute favourites is @newwavearch90 but I love going on an adventure down various tumblr rabbit holes of related blogs and posts. I also watch a lot of design history videos on youtube, as well as having an interest in lost media, old web stuff, analog horror ARGs, stuff like that. For example, this guy’s video about clip art is very interesting:

And so, a few months ago youtube recommended me THIS video and as soon as I saw the thumbnail I was like oh holy shit, I know exactly what style of design this is talking about. Anyone who used Windows XP would recognise this:

And once again, like the vaporwave discovery, the realisation that there are ongoing efforts being made to classify design movements of which I have vivid living memory was like… mindblowing to me. For some reason, lol. My appreciation for vaporwave has always been through a reflective filter of the media produced during that time, my response to it is really my response to the media, as opposed to having any real emotional connection to the actual time period and places the media is portraying.

And so after discovering Frutiger Aero I googled it, and came across the CARI (Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute) site. They work to catalogue and index this exact stuff, the aesthetics and reasoning behind all these different movements. It’s also co-founded by the same guy who runs @newwavearch90. Finding the actual names of the aesthetics I have the most emotional connection/nostalgia for has been less of a stroke of luck, but more because I’ve been snooping around the types of blogs and websites where I just happened to see certain posts tagged either Global Village Coffeehouse or Utopian Scholastic, then the giant lightbulb goes off. The relief of putting a name to a sound, an image, a feeling that was so important and exciting and comforting to you in the past, that has shaped so much of your taste and interests in the years since.

I think the base concept of “aesthetics” in general has gotten a bad rap in recent years. I know it can be grating to see teenagers try to categorise their whole identities into the easily consumed “aesthetic”, but we can’t ignore how much ageism and specifically misogyny is wrapped up in that assessment. Like, yes, where once there were just preps and goths it can be depressing to see teenagers (especially teen girls) ask themselves whether they are “old money east coast quiet luxury aesthetic girlies” or “mallpunk y2k whimsigoth aesthetic girlies” - but the problem isn’t in teens trying to find their identity, it’s that social media pushes the search for identity specifically through consumerism.

Teens liking aesthetics on tiktok just isn’t my concern. I’m far more interested in how art and design aesthetics relate to consumerism, to technological advances, to socio-political cultural context, to societal values. Why did these aesthetics arise at the time they did, and why were they popular, why did they fall out of the zeitgeist etc.

So yeah, to be not at all concise in any way; it’s because this stuff fascinates me and I love researching it 🥳

I think this is my favorite fic I've ever written, and I still can't even describe how happy it made me to see the artwork that brought it to life. It's mindblowing to me that my story is the reason such breathtaking art exists.

When Dean’s favorite author becomes a regular at his bar, Dean knows he’s done for. He never could have anticipated the intense feelings that blossomed for the talented Castiel. There’s just one thing standing in his way of being with Castiel the way he truly wants: Castiel is waiting for his soulmate. Dean has spent his entire life hating the concept of soulmates. He just wants to live his life without the universe intervening. If the only way he can keep Castiel in his life is by swallowing his feelings, then that’s what he’ll do.

I don't think I've ever had so much fun writing a fic. It's hilarious, if I do say so myself, and I don't think I would have ever come up with this idea without the art prompt.

The plan is simple enough: if there’s already an angel using Dean as a vessel, then Michael can’t trick Dean into saying “yes.” So Castiel will wear Dean’s body for a few weeks and then leave as soon as Michael is out of the picture. That’s how it’s supposed to go at least.

When Dean and Sam start to investigate a haunted inn, Dean expects it to be just like any other case. But there’s a catch: the resident ghost, Cas, turns into a human for two weeks every year. Before they can move forward with the case, they have to find out what happened to give Cas this kind of afterlife. And more importantly, Dean has to figure out how to honor his commitment to hunting monsters while he’s slowly falling for a ghost.

as a former fic writer who has retired, i completely and totally understand this urge. it’s all up to you of course, but i just came by to tell you that i absolutely love your work. there is truly something special about it. i don’t think your writing is repetitive at all!! the plots and characters all seem different. rather, it has the same sort of style to it which is EXACTLY what hooks me and draws me in- it’s this style of yours that is unique to what you write and it’s really mindblowing. sometimes when i read other fics, once i get to the smut part i get a little bored? like oh, it’s over now. all the tension’s fizzled out. but somehow, you manage to draw it out, you manage to inject the whole fic with that tense yet sexy atmosphere. and i have to say, you pull off angst and fluff and smut really well, all the genres. anyway, i guess i just wanna say, you’re really wonderful and one of my fav writers on here. 🤍

Well this is definitely surprising cause I think I see it the opposite way but to see the way you feel about my writing really cheers me up i always feel like I’m doing the same thing and my vocabulary is small but I guess not lol

As far as my writing style I’ve always tried my hardest to make everything fully understandable by not using big words and making sure the read is as smooth as possible

To touch on the genre of fics I write or more less the elements for some reason in my head I’ve always felt like the perfect fic consists of all three smut angst fluff like who doesn’t like all three? lol but yeah I really tried to focus in on those and learn how to write them good I think I’m doing a fairly good job but there’s always room for improvement

I definitely feel you on the smut part 😂 but I think if you really write the characters differently the smut will always feel new so that’s what I try to do and hopefully it’s working!!!

But yeah thank you for all the kind words this does actually give me a little motivation to try and work on some other fics that have just been sitting there so who knows I might just post a 40k story in the near future

I'm relatively new to the fandom, fell down a wormhole 3 months ago and never left! The disparity between the viewpoints of those 'in the know' & within the fandom, and the GP is a really interesting concept to me.

With this in mind, I started to tell my partner about this - about the relationship that's been happening in secret for 10 years ect. And his view, knowing no context at all, was 'I could believe it of HS, but not LT. I don't think he's gay at all.'

And again, I found that so interesting because HS has clearly made decisions to seed this idea in the GP over the last few months, but perception of LT is markedly different.

I was just wondering your views on this?

I think that those kinds of points of view coming from new people or GP are very interesting because there was a time when Louis was the gay one, like... obviously the gay one. The idea that they were trying to pass that boy as straight was absolutely mindblowing. So I always saw the fact that Louis came across as so stereotypical gay early in his career as something that scared the shit out of a lot of people and put at risk a lot of the way 1D was marketed. He was given a beard very early on, he was undoubtedly told to hold back his movements and the way he acted - around late/2013 and early/2014 it was heartbreaking watching him on stage being so insecure and overthinking every single one of his movements. And things progressed from there, from statements that he was in fact straight to having a fake child. They shoved him deep inside the closet in a very cruel way. So I think over the years he had to find new ways to feel comfortable about himself again, to find his "identity" almost. And I think that he found a lot of that by going back to his roots and embracing all his "chav lad" persona. Which does involve a lot of queer coding, by the way..... But I do understand that when people with no context at all look at Louis nowadays and read him as "not gay at all", but yeah, it doesn't take much if we look at his past or more closely in the way he communicates (through his songs, clothes...) that this couldn't be further from the truth.

So, while Louis was the "gay one", Harry was definitely the profitable one. I mean, look at him now LOL and that didn't make his closeting less rough, just different. He was always marketed as the flirty, sexy, charming one. But he could easily pass as straight without anyone questioning it until 2014/2015, and it was established very early on that he was basically having sex with everyone, he had very famous beards. They made it everyone's business, no wonder he was so scared about the idea of people thinking he had sex, he barely breathes next to someone and we have headlines about it. So while for Louis being gay was risky and dangerous, for Harry it turned out to be something that could be considered interesting and profitable with the time. The idea of playing with gender and sexuality is something they're seeding for way more than just a couple of months, it goes way back and IMO it's pretty clear that having a big question mark on his sexuality right now is intriguing, it's easily brushed off because he's a performer. So it all comes down to two different kinds of closetings, really...
