Let's get married. Here? Now? I told you. It's a beautiful, sunny day. Formal proposal. Check if the gods are on our side. Send your betrothal gifts. I didn't do any of them. Skip Them. I was always the one to not obey to dogmatic rules. I didn't think you'd be even crazier than me. Then it's a yes? Let me think about it. What am I saying? Of course. I'd love to. Look at you. You can't even perform the bowing ritual in our wedding.

Hiii there op! You have gotten me HOOKED on the sleuth of Ming dynasty! But istg, your memes had me thinking that all the side characters, were actually the mc's! but, ur blog single handedly got me addicted to this. Now i come back to you and ask for reqs! ( Also, take some buFF mEN i found from a webcomic i like called Nan Hao and Shang Feng as payment)
Tumblr media
Thank you so much!!!!
a few months ago I saw someone post that they thought ding rong was completely overrated in the tsomd fandom, despite the fact that he has maybe 5 minutes of total dialogue in the entire show and I think I am at least 60% to blame (´-ω-`)🍸
Thank you for the buff webcomic men. I shall store them safely in a cool, dry location.
Unfortunately, I cannot really recommend too many other dramas similar to TSOMD bc I don’t really watch cdramas.
Of the few I've seen I would recommend the following:
无心法师 || Wu Xin: the Monster Killer (season 1) (2015)
Tumblr media
(20 episodes, 45 minutes) || Watch online with English subtitles
Despite his immortality, Wu Xin is condemned to wander the earth, purposeless and penniless. In an act of kindness, Lue Ya shares her last bit of food with him and he returns the favor with a strange form of gratitude: killing monsters.
Notes: Only recommending the first season bc that’s the only one I’ve seen! Season 1 is rather self-contained but subsequent seasons feature some of the same characters. I really enjoyed this show's supernatural/monster lore and the 3 main characters have great chemistry.
天盛长歌 || The Rise of Phoenixes (2018)
Tumblr media
(70 episodes, 45 minutes)
When a secret from the past rears its head, a respected court scholar must choose between avenging her family and staying true to the prince she loves.
Notes: Extremely well shot, gorgeous costumes, and amazing acting. That said, I think I think I ended my watch of this show with higher blood pressure than when I had started it. I livetweeted my watch of the show if you want to take a skim: here
大秦赋 || Qin Dynasty Epic (2020)
Tumblr media
(78 episodes, 45 minutes) || Watch online with English subtitles
Qin Dynasty Epic is a historical drama that tells the story of Qin Shihuang, Ying Zheng, who, with the assistance of Lv Buwei, Li Si, Wang Jian, and more, conquered six kingdoms and established the first unified state in Chinese history.
Notes: This show has a shit ton of characters and also some pretty hard to believe age portrayals (the guy on the cover there plays his character who is like 15-25 for most of the show lolol). That said, there are some pretty compelling character arcs if you can get into it, and the costume/hair and makeup is really well done. I livetweeted my watch of the show if you want to take a skim: (episode 1) (episode 2-78) (predictably I do a lot of yelling about a side character)
双探 || Double Tap (2021)
Tumblr media
(16 episodes, 40 minutes) || Watch online with English subtitles
When one of his son’s school friends is kidnapped by two masked assailants, Li Huiyan, a perpetually broke but sharp-witted police detective, investigates. The trail brings him to a small town in the icy north. But after the father of Zhou You, a funeral parlor worker, is murdered in mysterious circumstances, Zhou You also hunts for answers – with the murderer fleeing to the very same town…
Notes: This show is one of the beautiful quiet thrillers and I absolutely love the vibe of it. I watched this as it was airing which is why I recommend it, but I have to warn you that I and many Chinese netizens thought the very last episode was unsatisfying (I suspect censorship and later rewrites had a hand in tanking the finale). Even so, I recommend it for the mystery and cinematography. I livetweeted it if you want to give it a skim: here.
Honorable mentions
三国机密 || Secret of the Three Kingdoms (2018)
I'd genuinely forgotten that I watched this until a second ago but I remember it being decent. Livetweet thread that I have zero recollection of here
Some other dramas that I know others have enjoyed but I haven't watched:
Empresses in the Palace (后宫·甄嬛传)
Nirvana in Fire (琅琊榜)
Winter Begonia (鬓边不是海棠红)
The Bad Kids (隐秘的角落)
The Untamed (陈情令) (I've watched half of this show but it wasn't for me. The donghua is nice! Great soundtrack.)
Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (如懿传)
Guardian (镇魂)

The Boy from Clearwater: Book 1 by Yu Pei-Yun and Zhou Jian-Xin (illustrator) (translated by Lin King)
Review:
The Boy from Clearwater (published by Levine Querido in November 2023) is a YA graphic biography written by historian Yu Pei-Yun and illustrated by Zhou Jian-Xin. It is a poignant Odessey about the life of Tsai Kun-lin, a (real-life) young man arrested during the White Terror for his association with a political book club. Beginning with Kun-lin's childhood, readers experience tender childhood moments of sneaking sugar cane along with the confusion and chaos surrounding the Japanese and Chinese occupations of Taiwan.
Overall, this is a solid graphic novel with a lot of educational value. The years of Kun-lin's life are intersected with notes regarding the many political shifts and thought movements occurring during his childhood and early adulthood.
I loved how the translators differentiated the different languages being used through the color of the text--it added a deeper emotional element to the whole thing, especially in chapters where the characters who grew up in a Japan-occupied Taiwan struggled to communicate with their older peers. I was particularly touched by how this element related to Kun-lin's father and the difficulties he endures in the "background" of the novel. Throughout, Kun-lin's once-rebel father expresses subdued sadness about the desecration of Hoklo Taiwanese and its connections to traditional Taiwanese culture (there is a particularly thoughtful scene in which he checks in on Kun-lin's studying, speaking Hoklo, before shifting to Chinese after Kun-lin expresses the need to meet Chinese standards). I reread the book just to take notes to see how the different languages weaved in and out of each other and the larger meaning in that tapestry.
It would be impossible not to highlight the work of Zhou Jian-Xin, the graphic novel's illustrator. The hand-penciled artwork was both refreshing and gut-wrenching in its unflinching portrayal of Kun-Lin's struggles and the beauty of Taiwan. I appreciated the combination of hand-drawn and print techniques the artist utilized, especially in the application of heavy, dark linocut prints to depict Green Island. Zhou Jian-Xin's portfolio can be found here: Jian-Xin Zhou – Literarische Agentur (mertinwitt-litag.de)
I did find myself wishing that the novel contained more insight into Tsai Kun-lin and the people around him. While we get hints of who they were as people and their struggles, the biography invests more time in summarizing events than investing in personal portrayals of its figures. The real Tsai Kun-lin became a human rights activist after his imprisonment and was very vocal about his political opinions. It seemed like a loss to not explore the development of his passion for human rights and politics during such a politically tumultuous time in Taiwan's history--particularly when The Boy from Clearwater explores his time in prison after he was wrongly arrested for his supposed political affiliations. Tsai Kun-Lin was largely portrayed as apolitical, which doesn't necessarily seem accurate to his real-life pursuits. However, this may have been influenced by the current stress on the Taiwanese people.
This would be an excellent graphic novel to introduce teenagers to the complex history of Taiwan and the suffering native Taiwanese people endured during the rotating occupations of the 19th and 20th centuries. With the continued turmoil in Taiwan, this novel couldn't have come out at a better time.
The second tome of The Boy from Clearwater is set to release in May 2024.

For those interested in more media concerned with the White Terror/its impacts:
ELEGY OF SWEET POTATOES by Tehpen Tsai: A heavily-reality-based novel focused on the story of Tehpen Tsai, a young man detained by the Kuomintang regime during the White Terror. This novel explores the idea of "thought crimes", punishment, and trauma.
TRANSITIONS IN TAIWAN: STORIES OF THE WHITE TERROR edited by Ian Rowen: A collection of non-fiction and fiction works by many of Taiwan's most celebrated authors focusing on the events of the White Terror and their impact on Taiwanese culture and life.
THE MAN WHO COULDN'T LEAVE: A VR short film directed by Singing Chen that depicts the life of a political prisoner on Green Island during the White Terror. (Trailer can be found here: The Man Who Couldn’t Leave (2022) | IDFA Archive)
DETENTION: A Taiwanese psychological horror game created by Red Candle Games. This story explores the White Terror, Taiwanese religion, and the multi-generational impact of colonization and violence.

Description
The Yin Wu Mountains area has the village of Lu Zhong (Green Bell Village) which is mysterious and full of mysteries, because there there have been various incidents and crimes caused by the Banyan Tree Demon King named Rongshu who is very evil and cruel. He likes to drink blood and eat human flesh, likes to rape his victims, both male and female, to regenerate their bodies.
Apart from that, the Yin Wu Mountains were also the territory of the Demon Emperor called the Mysterious Mist Empire with a very handsome Emperor named Emperor Zhou Ming.
Although Emperor Zhou Ming had the title of Demon Emperor, he actually had a very kind heart and was a defender of the truth, so he obtained the Holy Whip from the Heavenly Emperor, namely the One Hundred Soul-Destroying Divine Lightning.
Emperor Zhou Ming had two concubines, but he did not love his concubine because his father forced him to marry immediately and he never touched his concubine. He wants to find his beloved empress who is from the Human Race, the same race as his mother.
Emperor Zhou Ming finally found a very beautiful woman from the Human Race named Chu Yi Lian or Chu Yi who he loved very much. Chu Yi Lian was the daughter of Sect Leader Tian Xin which was the number one Martial Sect in the Great Eastern Country.
On his journey to find his future empress, Emperor Zhou Ming encounters an interesting experience and encounters the evil Demon Wolf.
In the end, this journey actually led him to discover the True Identity of Emperor Zhou Ming himself, which actually had something to do with the Heavenly Emperor Wu Jian Rui.
Who really was Emperor Zhou Ming?
