It's not a coincidence that the first mission Xie Lian goes on in the story and after ascending is the one with the obsessed woman chasing the god; this is a deliberate contrast to Hua Cheng. Both Xuan Ji and Hua Cheng love the god they chase after, and both of them devote both their lives and afterlives to this god.
MXTX uses Xuan Ji to show what this kind of obsession looks like when it's unhealthy, then introduces Hua Cheng's love as a more healthy version. While Xuan Ji wants to possess, Hua Cheng only wants to protect. Hua Cheng never demands, never kills humans or worshippers (only for revenge for his god or to protect him, never to punish him for lack of attention); he in fact sacrifices to ensure their survival. Instead of demanding his god look at him, he is content to hold his hand and lead him forward. Instead of destroying his god's shrines, he helps build them.
While Hua Cheng is definitely obsessed, his obsession is a shield, a flower, an umbrella. He does not exist to pull Xie Lian down or to own him or to destroy. He exists to love his god, a fervent, selfless love. A direct contrast to Xuan Ji's.

I'm continuing off the sunshine reader headcanons for this
If the gif isn't Tgcf ignore it because the Internet sucks ass I'll fix it later
I did this at school 😊
I'm putting it in headcanons since there's multiple questions but just tell me if this isn't what you meant
Made up scenarios
There might be slight misinformation remember when Hua Cheng had the weird rut thing? Yeah I'm using that, but my details might all be messed up.
Ignore grammar mistakes
Maybe OOC
If you do not like these things do not read this.
NSFW, slapping, spanking, bondage, overstimulation, edging, choking ahead!!!
Sunshine headcanons part two
Sunshine part four
____________________________________
Xie Lian and San Lang have done plenty of things to you!
Of course you've enjoyed it
San Lang likes to bully you so of course the things he's done have been more rough.
San Lang likes to edge you, or overstimulate you. It just depends on his mood
He'll do it for hours too.
Each time he makes sure you're crying and babbling. If you're not then San Lang doesn't think his job is done.
San Lang's favorite things is to fuck you dumb
Whether it be in bed, or over a calligraphy table, or in the gambling den, even over an alter!
His goal is to make your vocal chords raw and your legs shake.
San Lang makes sure by the end of the night that your poor cock can't cum anymore and you're all emptied out
So after a long time of making you wait, or pushing you over the edge many times you obviously start to squirm.
It's a natural body reaction that San Lang enjoys to see but he doesn't appreciate when your hands reach him and attempt to pause his ministrations.
(Obviously he would stop if you said your safe word or seriously wanted to stop)
Which leads to something else he enjoys.
Bondage!
San Lang loves, loves, loves to tie you up in pretty red ropes so that you can't escape him
It just does something to him, to see you tied up like that.
Like if you wanted to you seriously could break out of them but you enjoy being good for him and being pretty for him too.
San Lang won't get physically rough with you, he isn't one to hit you or spank you.
He likes to watch though
Xie Lian is mostly the gentle one, you both are gentle.
That doesn't mean he can't be rough though
If you're in the mood to get physically aggressively that's Xie Lian's domain.
While San Lang would rather not put you in serious pain, Xie Lian knows you want it and it's in a safe space.
He wouldn't ever purposely hurt you either, this is only in the bedroom.
So Xie Lian surprisingly enough is the one who will slap you if you get too mouthy, or spanks you if he thinks you deserve such a punishment
Your guy's sex life didn't always look like this.
It used to always be vanilla and gentle. Which of course you all enjoyed but everyone was hiding deeper desires
It started more with Xie Lian and San Lang talking
You aren't assertive at all so of course you didn't make a peep about your own feelings
Xie Lian and San Lang had just been making ideas of their own, they aren't dumb
They just decided to keep it to themself for now until there was an opportunity to discuss a more complex bedroom life
Their plan of smoothly introducing you to this failed very quickly when Hua Cheng went through one his strange rut things again
Xie Lian doesn't know why but he had been planning on taking care of it himself.
He's dealt with it before and he's sure Hua Cheng doesn't want you to see him like this
Especially when Hua Cheng rarely remembers what happens
Well that didn't go as planned either, when you accidentally enticed Hua Cheng
Honestly it's all your fault (jk)
Xie Lian had left for a literal 30 seconds before he could hear thumps in the room.
It was an accident on your part, you had come home with a new outfit you wanted to show your lovers
Some pretty robes you got from the ghosts
You were very pretty but the robes were obviously meant for more vulgar work. Not that your oblivious self knew.
So when you decided to show Hua Cheng how you looked, his rut-adled brain jumped on you immediately, pushing you into the bed and ripping the many layers off
Which was unusual for Hua Cheng, who was usually patient and waited for you to carefully disrobe.
So when Xie Lian went to go check what was going on it was already too late🤷
Hua Cheng already had you pinned under him and your poor, ripped up robes were now just scattered cloth on the floor.
So that's how your bedroom life changed.
After that night of aggressive, and endless sex you decided you white enjoyed it
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng enjoyed it too
🦊🪷
"A-Lang, A-Lian, I'm home!" You call, walking into Paradise Manor. However your lovers don't answer, do you decide to just go to the bedroom. Unknowingly for you, you've just passed Xie Lian in the kitchen, and your lover can't warn you about San Lang. Woops. Your first mistake of the night.
You continue on to the bedroom. You had been out most of the day. Xie Lian and San Lang ushered you out of the house, so you decided to hang out with your ghost friends. The women were absolutely adored with you and wanted to dress you up. The women's work was to try and attract the attention of men to have sex but you were friends with them anyways!
They're quite chaotic and fun to be around. They dressed you up in some of their robes. You know how you looked. Enticing, pretty, sexy, etc. The point was you wanted your lovers to see you. Why wouldn't you show them? You're dressed up so pretty for someone's attention so of course you want your lovers to be the ones to give you such attention. Your second mistake of the night.
When you open the bedroom door, you find only Hua Cheng in the room. You don't remember seeing Xie Lian anywhere else in the manor so maybe he went out? "A-Lang what are you doing all alone in the bedroom?" You hum.
Your voice immediately drags Hua Cheng's attention. His head snaps in your direction and then you see his eyes roaming over your form. He never replied and he only looks at you like prey. You should've run them but that was your third mistake. You just watched your lover stalk closer to you and stay where you are instead.
If Hua Cheng is a fox, and Xie Lian is a ferret, you're definitely a rabbit. You just freeze in place, staring at him. Hua Cheng lightly runs a hand over your cheek and he just looks at you for a few seconds. The silence is broken when he's suddenly grabbing you by the elbow and showing you down in the bed. He doesn't even say anything just low grunts and growl like sounds come up from his throat.
You yelp in surprise. Hua Cheng has never done this. He's always careful and even hesitant to touch you but something has changed. Before you can ask what's happening or try to move out of under him, Hua Cheng rips your robes. "S-san Lang, wait just a minute?!" You shriek and blush. You try pushing back, and attempt to sit up but Hua Cheng shoves you on your back and forces you under him.
Xie Lian finally decides to see what's going on and quickly finds the two of you. He blinks in shock. He never saw you come in. Also your situation right now is shocking as well. Xie Lian is quick to move Hua Cheng back and off of you, using rouye to keep him in place. Xie Lian at first though you might've been scared. After all you've never seen Hua Cheng like this but you're actually, shamefully hard.
You're blushing and shut your legs, trying to hide but you can't when Xie Lian has already seen. You don't know why you're turned on. This should be scary and frightening but that's the opposite of what you're feeling right now. The way Hua Cheng harshly forced you under him, as if he was going to devour you right then and there? The way he ripped your robes without care, because he's too impatient and wants to fuck you now?
You quite enjoyed that.
"A-n, are you alright?" Xie Lian smiles at you and walks closer to run a hand over your hair. You can only bid slowly. You're still staring at Hua Cheng who struggles a bit in Rouye's hold.
The perfect time has presented itself so why not take it by the hand? Xie Lian tucks a piece of your hair behind your ear, and he leans down, pressing his lips near your ear. "Baobei, do you like this? Do you like how San Lang treats you?"
You blush and gulp nervously. You turn your head trying to move your sensitive ear away from Xie Lian's lips. His breath tickles your ear and his voice just makes you ache more. "U-uhm"
Xie Lian tried out something for himself and he grips your hair, forcing your head to stay where it is. When you moan, Xie Lian stops feeling bad about it. "Do you A-n?"
"I-I like it" you gaze at bed, too aroused to meet any of your lovers gazes. Xie Lian smiles at your answer, and sits next to you on the bed. "Would you like to help San Lang this time around?" Xie Lian looks at Hua Cheng, who's staring at both of you with a predatory gaze.
Xie Lian's hand rubs over your thigh, "Let's try it then." He releases Rouye and lets the bandage wrap back around his wrist. Hua Cheng is immediately up and moving, getting on the bed and dragging you into a rough kiss. It's different and you like it. Hua Cheng explores your mouth with his tongue, and he nips your lips until the bleed a little.
Xie Lian doesn't mind watching, he likes seeing Hua Cheng enjoying you. He leans back against the headboard while Hua Cheng decides just kissing you is getting boring. His hands find your hips and he pulls you into his lap, spreading your legs around him so you can't hide your pretty cock away from him.
Hua Cheng attacks your neck next. Biting, and sucking roughly on your skin. Hua Cheng gets more handy though and one his hands dig into the plump flesh of your ass. Another hand starts rubbing your dick. You thought it was Hua Cheng but it's Xie Lian. You can only cling to your lover and moan. "San Lang face him this way" Xie Lian switches up the position.
You're still on Hua Cheng's lap but your back is to his chest, and now Xie Lian is in front of you instead. You cling to your lover's arms trying not to tip over, but Hua Cheng pulls your knees up to your chest instead, spreading you apart again. "You're pretty flexible A-n" Xie Lian laughs softly.
You flush at his words but a moan leaves your mouth when Xie Lian starts prodding oil covered fingers into your hole. "San Lang really wants to bully you Baobei but I'll make sure you don't get hurt" Xie Lian is only teasing you though, and you really want to cum by now. You whine impatiently, as Xie Lian purposely avoids your prostate.
Your prayers are answered though and his fingers leave you empty, the emptiness is soon replaced by something much bigger though. Hua Cheng keeps your legs hiked up and he bullies his cock inside you. A cry tumbles from your lips when Hua Cheng pushes your hips down, forcing you to take all of him.
He doesn't wait for your comfort like he usually does and goes straight to thrusting his dick into. He acts like he's been starved for years! "Ah~ A-Lang please, p-please!" You don't really know what exactly you're begging him for. Whether it's to slow down or for him to keep going but he successfully wrings an orgasm out of you, and it splatters across your tummy.
You've never had the chance to have more than one orgasm in a night but that's going to change today because Hua Cheng is moving again and he's shoving your face in the pillows. Hua Cheng prefers this, he can fuck you better when your on your hands and knees, and perking your ass in the air. His cock bullies deeper into you and his hips slap hard against your ass.
Xie Lian is thoroughly enjoying himself. Your eyes rolled back and your cries muffled by the pillows. He has a better idea though. "A-n can I borrow your pretty lips?"
You only babble an incoherent sentence at him, a mumbled "yesh~" and something else. Xie Lian really only cares for the consent though. He disrobes, enough to where he can let his cock escape its confinements. Then he fists his fingers into your hair and forces you to look up at him. Xie Lian was going to try and guide you through it slowly but you immediately nuzzle up to his dick and start licking his head.
Xie Lian moans and grips tighter when you take his cock down your throat and gag. Hua Cheng's fucking only makes you take both of their cocks deeper and soon tears are running down your face and another orgasm shakes you to your core. Xie Lian takes the initiative to face fuck you. Both of them make sure your holes are never empty for too long.
"A-n you're doing s-so well" Xie Lian purrs out, he stutters from your lips around his dick though. Not that you would notice you're too busy drooling and babbling. They aren't invisible to the pleasure they're receiving from you either and it's not long until they're both cumming in you at the same time. Hua Cheng's and Xie Lian's cum both feel warm in your belly. You can feel Hua Cheng's cum drips down the back of your thighs.
They pull out of you but Hua Cheng doesn't let you go. He keeps his arms wrapped around you and tucks his face into your neck. You breathe heavily and Xie Lian wipes the drool from your chin. You sigh leaning back on Hua Cheng's chest, resting. Hua Cheng chuckles in your ear and for the first time in the night speaks for the first time. "You don't think we're done do you?"
Of course you aren't. 💕

Modern Au where Mu Qing breaks up with Feng Xin because he's being silly and overthinking. He's convinced that Feng Xin is bound to end things between them one day and his pride couldn't possibly handle that. So he texts Feng Xin a simple "We're over. Don't call me anymore."
Feng Xin, naturally, freaks out, because in his mind everything is fine between them. They've been fighting less. His legs aren't covered in bruises from Mu Qing kicking him. Things had been going great. So he calls his (ex??) boyfriend, who doesn't answer.
What the fuck?? Why won't he fucking answer??
He keeps calling. And calling. Sends a shit tone of texts. But he won't answer. And it's been hours.
It's well after midnight now and Feng Xin is laying alone on his bed staring at the ceiling. His mind is racing, trying to think of what he did wrong, because he must've done something, there's no other explanation.
He hears a notification sound from his phone and he rushes to open it because "ok he's talking to me. If he's talking to me I can fix this." But despite his hopes it's just the group chat. It's Xie Lian with *another* cat meme.
And that's when it hits him. How is he going to tell everyone that Mu Qing dumped him one day out of nowhere? He already knows how everyone is going to react and he doesn't want to go though that.
Xie Lian will try to talk to Mu Qing and that will probably lead to a sobbing Xie Lian and a murderous Hua Cheng. And even if he thinks he should be angry at Mu Qing right now, he doesn't deserve that.
Shi Qingxuan will try to take him out clubbing, introduce him to people. Pei Ming will probably lock him in a room with some random person that once told him they find Feng Xin cute, hoping it'll work as a rebound.
They will all mean well but he can't handle them. He'll tell them Mu Qing left. That he got a job in Europe or something. But then they might call him and they'll learn the truth.
Oh he knows. It's stupid, it's over the top but he knows. He'll tell them Mu Qing died.
He'll figure out the cause of death later but for now it's as good a plan as anything.
Later on, he falls asleep, still in his jeans, above the covers and he'll dream about Mu Qing dying. Multiple times.
Mu Qing went down on an air plane
Mu Qing got fried getting suntanned
Mu Qing fell in a cement mixture full of quicksand
Mu Qing met a shark underwater
Mu Qing fell and no one caught him
In all these scenarios Feng Xin sees himself running after Mu Qing and failing to help everytime.
He wakes up with tears in his eyes but he knows now what he'll tell his friends.
AND THE SONG IS
Bonus points because while Feng Xin is talking to Xue Lian about his boyfriend's gruesome and sudden death on the kitchen table of their joint apartment, the "dead" man walks out of his room, grabbs Feng Xin by the collar of his t-shirt and Drags him back in his room. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng go on about their days as they normally would because this is the fourth time this has happened in the last year and they know that the other dumbasses will make up and stay locked in Mu Qings room till the next morning.

Thinking again about Lang Qianqiu's and Xie Lian's relationship because it is under-discussed (especially with the new Donghua episodes).
Watching the Donghua after reading the book is like re-reading the book and then you see all these fresh new things that you overlooked before. Things that were misinterpreted because of circumstance but now hit with a whole new meaning!
First of all, how proud Xie Lian is of Lang Qianqiu when he's first introduced.
TGCF BOOK SPOILERS.
It's clear that Jun Wu introduced them just for the stake of stirring the pot with their past, but Xie Lian held no animosity or hate towards Lang Qianqiu, prince of the enemy kingdom. If anything, he was so very fond of the boy that reminded him of his younger self. They have a student/teacher relationship but I see them sometimes as child and parent because of how proud Xie Lian is and how far he goes sometimes to protect Lang Qianqiu. In the book he said a line that summarised could basically mean that he'd take all the blame, punishment and pain, he would endure any suffering if it meant that Lang Qianqiu could keep living innocently and pure, believing in good people and kindness. More than anything, Xie Lian wanted to protect that boy's heart.
Poor Lang Qianqiu who he'd raised to believe in kindness and peaceful coexistence, who had come in late for his birthday party which was the only reason he hadn't ended up dead. He'd just been a little late. He was excited, looking forward to seeing his father and mother. A young lad of seventeen. I bet Xie Lian was also looking forward to Qianqiu's birthday, might have even prepared a gift for him. Yet what happened? He discovered a terrible plot much too late, everyone had already been killed. Foolish people who lived in the present and believed that Xianle would rather die than dine with their enemy. The poor people didn't want that, the people dependent on Yong An's kindness and generosity would surely perish. Yong'An's mercy was the closest Xie Lian had come of saving the people of Xianle since his fall. For the people he'd failed to protect, he just wanted them to have a safe house with the kindest prince of all ruling over them.
Those selfish rebels wanted to start what would have been a terrible civil was that would have ended tragically for all the people of Xianle, they would have been stamped out like ants until they were no more. To make things worse, just as Xianle had chased away the last of the rebels, he discovered that the King was still alive. The dying King of Yong'An had just one request. He wanted the people of Xianle to pay. In that moment, what decision could the prince of a failed nation possibly do? The King wanted revenge, one couldn't fault him of that, but innocent people would suffer. The rebels were a small group, they'd taken decisions on their own. The King wouldn't care about that, people would die, children would die. To crown it all, just after Xie Lian had made a decision. Just after he'd sunk his sword into the King to silence his vengeance....who would walk in but the student he was proud of the most, seventeen year old Lang Qianqiu who'd finally made it to his birthday party.
The whole thing....was a mess.
That poor child. Imagine seeing the person you admire the most yanking their weapon from the lifeless body of your parent, and surrounding him are all of your relatives and nobles of the kingdom covered in blood. Of course such a thing is traumatising. Of course he buried Xie Lian in a hole. When a person feels that much pain, their only desire is to make the one who hurt them understand how much it hurt.
Of course Xie Lian took the blame. A a nameless and faceless Guoshi, they wouldn't be able to connect him with the people of Xianle. The people would be free of blame, and he would suffer alone. Lang Qianqiu would just have to do with his pain and his pain alone.
The way Xie Lian looks upset when Lang Qianqiu gets hurt. The way he'd rather lie over and over again, than let Lang Qianqiu believe that he was wrong for being kind.
Xie Lian remembers what it was like to be like Lang Qianqiu. He also knows how trauma twisted him into a monster that he's regretted for all of his years. He couldn't bear to imagine Lang Qianqiu going through the same. For as long as he can help it, he will mindlessly shield the boy from the ugliness of politics.....because Xie Lian loves him so much. (TT)(TT)(TT)(TT)(TT)
That's basically his son. He's so proud of him.
I love what Xie Lian said to Lang Qianqiu, I'll love it round the world and back. I can't quote it but basically "You're not the one who did wrong, the people of Xianle are not wrong too, the wrong people are the evil doers. It is not your fault that wicked people took advantage of your kindness. You're not to blame....for being kind."
Felt like he was talking to himself for real. (TT)

Hello there! General Keno- sorry. I just wanted to thank you for making your reverse AU.
Whenever one of your comics shows up on my tumblr feed, it just instantly makes my day! I love your character designs, especially Hua Cheng and Mei Nianqing.
Another thing I really appreciate is that you don't just put everybody into pairs and then swap them with zero thought behind it, like with Yin Yu and Mu Qing. You'd expect that since Yin Yu takes Ling Wen's roll, she'd be Xie Lian's right hand, but in your last comic we actually saw that Mu Qing (and there for probably also Feng Xin) work for him. Makes guessing who's taking who's roll a lot more fun :D
Aww thankyou! Your words mean a lot to me! And yes, glad you pointed that out! It’s not a 100% reverse au, I try to put people into different roles not completely reverse to the other. You’ll see later when I try to introduce Feng Xin or Lin Weng 🌚🌝

HuaLian Vampire AU
But the vampire is not who you would expect.
While Hua Cheng has the vampire aesthetic, Xie Lian is the one that's always borrowing/ sucking spiritual energy from him. So basically, a HuaLian vampire AU where Hua Cheng looks like the vampire, plus because of Xie Lian’s bandages around his neck it seems even more like Hua Cheng is the vampire - but it's actually Xie Lian.
Xie Lian has been turned into a vampire by Bai Wuxiang, but Feng Xin and Mu Qing don't know. Xie Lian seems to be distancing himself from them a little, then shortly after he introduces his boyfriend Hua Cheng to them.
Feng Xin and Mu Qing distrust Hua Cheng. It only gets worse when they keep finding clues that scream vampire around them. So of course, they suspect Hua Cheng. They assume he's a vampire and want to save Xie Lian from him.
They start acting weird around Hua Cheng and 'testing' him behind Xie Lian's back (just like they tested him in the novel). Hua Cheng soon realises what their plan is, but pretends not to know and plays along with their ridiculous vampire tests, just to fuck with them and to keep Xie Lian’s secret.
Only when Feng Xin and Mu Qing finally become desperate and accuse Hua Cheng directly in front of Xie Lian, Xie Lian realises why they always acted so weird around Hua Cheng. He then comes clean and tells Feng Xin and Mu Qing everything.
They are surprised by this revelation, to say the least.

Xie Lian taking away Lang Qianqiu’s freedom to choose his own path?
i’ve already addressed this in a reblog post but now that i’ve finished book 1 of the revised version i’d like to offer a more comprehensive analysis.
someone pointed out that in the revised version, xie lian seems much more “selfish”, that he is no better than White No-Face because he also lied to Lang Qianqiu to shape him into the kind of person he wanted him to be.
【Lang Qianqiu said sharply, "You still deny it?! For so many years, you've kept me from knowing who my real enemy is, you've deceived me yet made me grow into the person you wanted! To achieve this, you'd rather be thought of as the murderous culprit of the bloody massacre at the Gilded Banquet, allowing me to drive forty-nine nails into your chest and into the coffin! Guoshi, you're really something!"
With every sentence, Xie Lian couldn't argue because it was the truth. So, all he could do was despairingly say, "It's not like that."】 (new scene from revised version)
as i mentioned in my other post, a narrative that weaves its way through tgcf is how xie lian is supposed to be a parental/teacher figure toward lang qianqiu, and that such figures exist to the end of protecting/guiding children; even in modern society research has shown that the adolescent brain doesn’t develop fully until around 25 years of age, insofar as they shouldn’t be given complete free reign over many areas, for example we have laws pertaining to the legal age of driving or the legal age of drinking, we have age ratings for media and put minors dni in our bios… etc. in other words, it is not xie lian’s onus to completely leave lang qianqiu be to figure out his life. of course, lang qianqiu is a couple hundreds years old, but we will stick to the theoreticals of their what their relationship represents.
a brief aside about culture, i think western culture tends to place much more emphasis on individual choice / freedom in general, versus during my time in Chinese fandom nobody thought this was a problem. haha at the risk of sounding like communist propaganda, choice is not always good. for example, Barry Schwartz introduced the concept of the paradox of choice, which illustrates that while a variety of options allows for more freedom and autonomy, it can also lead to greater dissatisfaction, indecision, and paralysis; this is why businesses avoid presenting consumers with a wide array of products or services, because it could overwhelm them and lead them to give up purchasing anything in the end.
xie lian makes a similar argument:
【Indeed, whether the talisman burns could determine the life or death of what's inside the pot. But if the answer was "alive," it would be easy to kill whatever was inside right there and then. If the pot contained a little rabbit, a small demon, or even a human soul, then the gamble wouldn't be fun at all.
Shaking his head, Xie Lian said, "It's not that I'm worried. Of course, I know you wouldn't do such a thing. I just think it's better not to give others the chance to make such a choice.”】 (new scene from revised version)
this relates to the one-cup-of-water-two-people (i have no idea how to translate this properly) problem, in which no matter who you choose to give the water to, no matter which of the Two Paths you choose, it would always feel as if you’ve done something wrong. it’s a zero-sum game. similarly, alluding to the trolley problem, whether you pull the lever or not, you would either be killing someone or leaving others to die.
xie lian’s philosophy, then, is to prevent a situation such as the trolley problem from happening in the first place. he wants to spare the pain of the decision. he wants to eradicate the “two-paths” narrative.
hua cheng embodies the same philosophy. a few years ago, i asked a friend, how do you think xie lian would choose if he were to do the trolley problem, except on one track we have hua cheng, on the other track we have all the common people? and then i realised — hua cheng would probably willingly die for xie lian so he does not have to make the choice.
choice is burdensome.
another thing i want to point out is the popular phrase circulating on the Chinese internet “因为自己淋过雨,所以想给别人撑把伞” (“Having been drenched in the rain myself, I wish to hold an umbrella for others.”), in which there is no “neutral” option; there is no “support others in finding their own umbrellas”. in that sense, xie lian merely acts as a foil to bai wuxiang by doing the opposite of what he did. i do not think mxtx considered the “in-between” option of giving lang qianqiu the freedom to choose.
having finished rereading book 1, i realised that there is a line in it that directly mirrors the above.
【what he has endured enough himself already, he cannot bear to let another go through it as well.】
hua cheng also adds his own perspective to balance things out:
【He also sat down beside Xie Lian and said, "Moreover, if you value [Lang Qianqiu] so much, why can't you trust him?"
Xie Lian lifted his face from his arms. Hua Cheng said lightly, "Trust that since he is the one you've chosen, he will not lose himself in hatred. Even if he once wished to destroy the entire world, in the end, he will do what he must.”】
in the end, linking back to the narrative that xie lian is lang qianqiu’s parental/teacher figure:
【Lang Qianqiu looked as if he wished he could cover his ears: "Why are you lecturing me like this? What gives you the right to act as my master?"
Xie Lian replied, "It won't happen again." Lang Qianqiu was startled, and Xie Lian added, "This is the last time. Faults need fixing, and the rest is up to you to figure out slowly on your own."】
a popular interpretation amongst Chinese fans is that only upon his third ascension did xie lian “truly” ascend. if we read TGCF as a bildungsroman, xie lian starts off as a naive crown prince who matures through these 800 years. in parallel, then, we have just witnessed the inciting incident to lang qianqiu’s character growth arc. this is the beginning of his coming-of-age.

Introducing: The Which MXTX Character do You Most Want to Study Like a Little Bug Tournament Bracket
Tumblr media
Starting February 20, 2023 (American time), I'll be running a tournament via tumblr polls to determine once and for all which Mo Xiang Tong Xiu webnovel character the fanbase most wants to study like a little bug.
FAQ:
What do you mean by "most want to study like a little bug"?
Which character makes you want to pick them up, put them in a glass jar, examine them with a little magnifying glass, and poke them with a stick to see how they react? Which character is so so small and pathetic and also truly deeply bizarre? If you don't get what I'm talking about, this poll may not be for you.
Why on earth are you doing sixty-four characters?
A perfectly even bracket has to have 16, 32, or 64 starting contestants, and since there were 33 characters that I really wanted to include, I decided to Commit.
What is wrong with you?
Yeah.
If you'd like to either search for or blacklist posts related to this event, all of mine will be tagged with "MXTX bugpoll."
You can find the full list of matches under the readmore. Happy voting!

Tumblr media
You ask and I deliver! I'm so happy everyone is enjoying the Mu Qing hc, so let's start:
Tumblr media
Mu Qing would notice the littlest things about you.
From how you style your hair, how you prepare your coffee/tea, what you put first in the bowl if it's the cereals or the milk to the little gestures you do when you're nervous.
He just loves your little mannerisms so much. He finds them endearing.
Even the way every week you organize your books in a different system
He would notice how you sometimes forget to take care of yourself properly so he would help.
If you are a very busy person in the morning and forget to eat breakfast he'd prepare it for you to take away with a sticky note saying: "Don't forget to eat dummy"
When you first introduced him to MBTI he was really confused.
And when you explained the concept to him he low-key thought it would be another zodiac thing.
Which made you really pissed
So you made him do the test.
(And during the test he was a bit bored ngl)
It gave him ISTJ
At first, he was confused but as he read his results he was starting to doubt his convictions and so he became interested in mbti's
Cue you sending him a shitton of mbti memes 24/7
And whenever he saw a meme roasting your mbti he would def sending you
You would def make him dress up as your mbti for Halloween
But he wouldn't mind
Because if it made you smile he would do anything for you
When it comes to communication in a relationship, he can get a bit shy and insecure, so there will be times when he won't say wants to say. But if you talk to him and show him that you can give him a safe space to express his feelings he will become more confident and it will show.
OH! I totally feel like mu qing is the type to avoid you when he realizes his feelings for you (pre-relationship)
If you were close friends before and this starts happening it can be very hurtful.
You try to corner him but to no avail, he just gives a half-assed excuse and weasels his way away from you again.
It takes Xie Lian, Feng Xin, and even a tiny roast from Hua Cheng to make him apologize and confess to you
"Mu Qing you should be honest about your feelings, it's clear that they like you too!"
"Yeah bro you need to go head in and do it, it's been too long and now that you decided to very obviously distance yourself they've kinda been upset these past few days"
"Only a pussy bitch boy wouldn't admit their feelings and just confess instead of causing mindless hurt to both parties, isn't that right Mu Qing?"
"San lang..."
Yes that was basically the last drop for Mu Qing and he decides to drive up to your place
(cliché warning: I'm about to be so corny on this one I hope you can forgive me)
It started pouring rain and Mu Qing cursed himself for not doing this sooner and just being a blatant coward.
When he reached your driveway he calls your phone
"Hey, why are you-"
"Come outside"
"Mu Qing it's raining"
"I don't care just come outside, I want to take you somewhere"
"Fine. Give me a minute"
You basically leave in your pajamas and go on a late-night drive with Mu Qing.
He obviously gives you the aux cord bcs he likes your taste in music
You guys drive for a bit until he stops at a place with a nice skyline
You guys stay silent until he turns the engine off.
Mu Qing sighs to himself as you look at him expectantly
"Look Y/n I'm sorry. I have been a first-class dick these past few days and I really didn't want to hurt you by doing it but...it's just that... " he stops.
The words he wants to say can't get out of his mouth it's stuck in his throat until he feels your hand on top of his giving him an encouraging nod
It's incredible how you make him feel like he can conquer the world without uttering a single word really.
"I have feelings for you y/n. I never felt like this before. I feel like I don't deserve to feel like this, I feel like I don't deserve you in my life because I can't treat you like you should be treated. You've been here for me through thick and thin and I would do anything for you. But I am honestly feeling very fucking scared for what it might happen next."
You stay quiet trying to process all of the information you were just told. It was a lot to take in. Until you broke the agonising silence.
"I like you too Mu qing. I always have" you said with a beaming smile
"And yes you were being a total asshat, I was so confused. I thought you were upset that I ate the last chocolate pudding in your fridge"
"SO IT WAS YOU?? I THOUGHT I WAS FENG XIN! I MADE HIM BUY ME 4 MORE"
You two broke in silly laughter and when you opened your eyes you saw mu qing really close to your face.
He was looking at your eyes with such adoration that it was hard to maintain eye contact with those grey eyes.
He momentarily looked at your lips and his Adam's apple bobbed
He looks back at your eyes again moving closer. Your lips almost touching
"Can I k-kiss you?"
You guys can figure out the rest ;)

Do you mind if I ask something as a new fan of MXTX works? So if Lan Ying is Jun Wu in disguise does it mean from the start of the story, it's Jun Wu all along? Also, if He Xuan already fulfill his retribution to Shi Wu Du, how come he is still on earth and not moving on?
Also, is it just fanon or canon that Shang Qinghua already "with" Mobei Jun since he was a teenager and Shen Yuan never realized that Luo Binghe loved him all this time?
And is it true that Wei Wuxian never thought of Nie Huaisang as the "masterplanner" all this time and is Jin Ling reconcile with Wei Wuxian at the end?
Sorry for my (many) silly ask...
TGCF Questions:
1) Lang Ying was not Jun Wu the whole time. The ghost boy that we are first introduced to is Lang Ying, who then later gets devoured by White No-Face:
If “Lang Ying” had never existed to begin with and was only White No-Face in his weakened form, everything would be easy to explain. But when Xie Lian remembered the girl Xiao-Ying who had died on Mount Yujun, he wished that explanation made less sense than it did. Xie Lian swiftly thought of another possibility. “Or perhaps...he devoured Lang Ying.” The “Lang Ying” before them was growing taller. His body stretched upward, and the bandages on his face unwrapped and dropped away to reveal the mask beneath. He lifted his head slightly when he heard Xie Lian’s guess and seemed to smile. “You guessed right.”
—Vol. 6, Chapt. 94: From the Sealed Kiln, One Supreme Shall Emerge, official
2) Perhaps he does not feel like his obsession has been resolved. After all, Shi Qingxuan could be considered a loose end, though He Xuan seems to have left him alone since the Blackwater arc. Nothing says that the obsession keeping him tied to the mortal world would find resolution with Shi Wudu's death.
SVSSS Questions:
1) It's fanon that Shang Qinghua and Mobei-Jun were together for that long. They only officially "get together" (if it can be read as that) in the post-canon extra "Airplane's Fortuitous Encounter." Their business relationship (if one can call it that) is what began when Shang Qinghua was a teen.
2) I'm not sure I get what the second part means by "all this time." Shen Qingqiu realized Luo Binghe liked him romantically the moment Luo Binghe kissed him in the shared dream before the battle over Shen Qingqiu's corpse. After deliberating on it a bit more in the shared dream after the battle, he accepts that there were always signs that Luo Binghe liked him but he chose to not understand them in order to stick to the genre's formula and tropes. This is all in Chapts. 10-11 of vol. 2 of the official translation.
MDZS Questions:
1) It's hinted at throughout the text that Wei Wuxian has his suspicions about Nie Huaisang's actions and motivations, particularly when he questions how Nie Huaisang conveniently shows up during certain key events and is connected to all the key players, but we as the audience are never explicitly told when Wei Wuxian zeroed in on him as the mastermind behind the plot. We only get the confrontation at the end of the main story that Wei Wuxian has been connecting these dots for a minute.
2) Yes, Jin Ling reconciled with Wei Wuxian by the end of the story. He already wanted to reconcile by the end of the second siege of the Burial Mounds, but circumstances prevented him. By the extras, they are regularly meeting up for nighthunts, and Jin Ling goes to Wei Wuxian for help.

I cannot believe I forgot that Xie Lian's "god-pleasing warrior" costume in the parade is meant to represent Jun Wu. Holy shit.
Xie Lian is literally introduced to us not only dressed as Jun Wu, but acting the part of him in a performance, and his costume is topped off with a full-face mask. When Jun Wu later tries to force Xl to become him, to act out his deeds while dressed as him, mask and all, he's asking him to so for the second time. Because everyone agrees that Xie Lian and Jun Wu's lives as crown princes are perfect parallels. Pre-ascension Xl fits perfectly into the narrative when Jw tries to cast him as himself, and so Xl wears his beautiful costume and mask in the parade.
The question of book 4 is whether Xie Lian will follow Jun Wu's path post-banishment, with donning the costume and mask of the White No-Face as a symbol that Xl is becoming Jw. Xie Lian wears the older crown prince's clothes and mask when their stories fit together, and Jw can once again cast Xl as himself when he gathers the souls of Xianle's army to unleash the curse.
Then Xie Lian's path diverges from the original crown prince's. He doesn't fall completely down the path of hatred and isolation, and for the next 800 years, he trades out all the masks and Jun-Wu costumes for a bamboo hat. Even better, when Xie Lian eventually defeats Jun Wu, he does so clothes-first. The emperor's beautiful armor is shattered, and the rest follows suit.
Xl even gives his old god his bamboo hat in the end, reversing which one of them's costuming who. (and notice how the mask is something to hide behind or deceive with, whereas the hat is simply something for protection).
The thing is, Xie Lian was never quite so perfect a parallel to the Crown Prince of Wuyong as everyone thought. Xie Lian played him in the parade, and he played him perfectly, but then Hua Cheng appeared, and Xl abandoned his role immediately. He lept from the stage and his planned path in order to rescue a common person, losing his mask in the process, and thus showed his true colors to the world.
Xie Lian may be similar to Jun Wu on the surface, but for the past 800 years, even from the first pages of the book, the things that have set him apart have been Hua Cheng and his unending devotion to saving the common people.
That's Xie Lian's true face under the mask Jun Wu puts on him.

Thoughts on why the main relationship in TGCF manages to be full of tropes that are trash-associated but is also deeply compelling:
There are SO MANY nuances of the complicated power dynamics and self-sacrifice in Hualian’s relationship that could’ve been cringily unhealthy at so many points and THEN they just WEREN’T. Not ever. Not once
Every time I revisit this novel, I remain so impressed with MXTX’s capacity for nuance. These two are so gone on each other. Hua Cheng literally worships Xie Lian like a god. They would commit atrocities for each other. There are literally characters in the novel who worry about the sheer, unconditional trust Xie Lian gives to Hua Cheng no matter how many secrets he has. In a lesser writer’s hands, this exact dynamic is unhealthy to the point of atrocity: one becoming an unmoored monster and the other both enabler and victim. The shadow of this dynamic is hinted at in the book 4 flashback but it is specifically not allowed to actually become that. Never do we see even a shade of that relationship slip into the book itself, because that’s not how it really is for these two, not even in the darkest flashback moments.
Many narratives in which this level of devotion is present, it would be accurate to call it blind devotion, which becomes uncomfortable for the sake of the follower and unhealthy for the development of their love interest, but here the devotion is so continuously and unfailingly anchored not in looking the other way (the damaging nature of doing so being one of the core themes of the novel) but is conversely about seeing clearly and understanding fully.
So when Hua Cheng does things like offering to take the plague sword and release the disease on Yong’an himself, it actually has the effect of letting Xie Lian see the effect these choices are having on himself more clearly. It was absolutely necessary that Wu Ming not say “let me do this because you want it done” but instead say “I would do this if you needed me to and you didn’t want to because I independently understand why you want this”, because then, refusing him is a real reflection for Xie Lian on himself. There is self-sacrificing devotion in the relationship, but only for the sake of their actual wellbeing, never just while following a blind desire to do what they say.
Like, Hua Cheng can refuse Xie Lian. That’s a pretty foundational thing that happened. He does refuse him things from the beginning, even in the most basic, relationship-defining things. Xie Lian asked him to forget him after the burning of his temples and he refused, and here we are now. It’s a devotion to each other’s wellbeing, that also manages to be so without either of them assuming they know better than the other what that person needs or wants. The only time Hua Cheng actively sacrifices himself (which Xie Lian definitely wouldn’t want if asked) it’s in pursuit of the goal/outcome that XL wanted/needed to happen.
There manages to be complete devotion to each other, and also deep respect for each other’s choices and judgement, and those things…. often don’t coexist in fiction. Like, Hua Cheng introduced nothing if not agency to Xie Lian’s life. In the grand majority of the side arcs, often the “twist” in the mystery we’re exploring is some variation on “was someone forced to do something? No, they had agency!” And whether what they did with it was bad is also very much up for debate. The backstories and current stories of our protags were often journeys in recognizing that they’re not absolved of personal responsibility for lack of easy options, and show them winning by choosing to wrest back agency instead, even to their own detriment. “Take the third path”, “no paths are bound” etc. are catchphrases of our main character for a reason. Sometimes the best option still ended in tragedy, but it didn’t compromise their integrity. I LOVE “no paths are bound” as a tagline for this book and a catchphrase for Xie Lian, because it ALSO ties the good things about the main relationship into the main themes of the book. Hua Cheng’s goal is not just to be able to protect, which he probably could have done as an ordinary super ghost, but to be powerful enough to put every single possibility on the table for Xie Lian. Hua Cheng needed to be the Most Powerful, because he decided that if Xie Lian wants to do something, Hua Cheng needs to be strong enough to make it happen, needs to make it so that that every option, every path, is always under serious consideration. He literally made it so that any roll of the dice was an equally good outcome (Which is the best rationale for designing an OP character I’ve ever heard in my life). He’s not preventing danger, but instead increasing his agency in the face of it. Essentially “If what you end up choosing is MORE DANGER then I’ll be unhappy about it but I won’t stop you, I will work to make that path walkable too. I’m not here to keep you on a path, I’m here to open and smooth the one you most want to use.”
And, moreover, both people are able to be insanely cool and insanely powerful and be looked up to by the other, because while the power dynamics between them, perceived or real, could’ve been uncomfortable at many points, they WEREN’T. The people involved are on even footing even when they think they’re not. There was never a time when their presence wasn’t good for each other, even before Xie Lian knew to pay attention. Even in Hua Cheng’s very earliest appearances in the book 2 flashbacks, it’s really notable that he had enough effect on Xie Lian and his well-being that he appears multiple times in Xie Lian’s memory of those events, even though he had no idea who he was, or even that all his appearances were the same person.
MXTX really seems to grasp what’s attractive about these protective/super-powerful-boyfriend dynamics in fiction, why they often go badly wrong/make fiction bad rep of healthy relationships, and then SHOWS THEM IN THEIR HEALTHY FUNCTIONAL FORM INSTEAD so we’re free to love what we love about them. At the end of the day, we’re shown the way the best of these things all ideally point to love and concern for the other person as they are, before any considerations of their role in your own life or what they do for you. BUT with the expectation of reciprocal respect and latitude to do what you need to do as well.
I’ve never seen another story do this quite so well with such so-often-abused tropes and dynamics, and it’s one of the reasons that the romance in particular makes this work so near and dear to me.
It kinda reaffirmed my ability to see these things I naturally love seeing in love stories as healthy, reasonable forms of affection and devotion when based in an actual healthy relationship. When much, much fiction that treats similar dynamics badly makes me want to feel bad for enjoying aspects of them.
So seeing THIS relationship be what it is was a validating, freeing, and clarifying experience. It basically explained for me why I like these things, and elucidated why, for me, they fit into my paradigm of ideal romance and devotion, even (especially) when they can be problematic if treated wrong.
In essence, seeing these tropes done well is also an exercise in seeing what was missing in cases where they were damagingly removed from context, and thus understanding their key aspects and the core behind their impact. This book actually literally kinda reframed the way I conceptualize romance by helping me put together how many of the tropes I love in romances actually fit into an ideal relationship.
A spring cleaning of my thoughts if you will.
An ordering of my conceptions.
And I bonded with it deeply for that.
And yet it is also trash, who would’ve thought.
(it is self-aware, culture-savvy, meta-commentary trash for the most part, that clearly leans into it with fond intention, so I really do not mind it. It manages to be genre bending while expressing only love for its own genre and why it is the way it is. No disdain here. Only love for things as they are.)

Voice Actor HC
Modern AU where XL isn’t a huge fan of audio books because why have someone read it out loud for you when you can just sound out the voices in your head on your own?
But then XL’s been hearing a lot of rave about a certain voice actor whose popularity has steadily been rising for reading certain spicy audio books. XL happens to stumble across a short clip via the internet of Hua Cheng’s reading voice.
One audio book downloaded after another, XL gets absolutely hooked.
And thus, pan to XL who now languidly jogs on the treadmill while listening to the newest audio book read by HC.
Until a certain scene comes up-
And hearing HC’s low voice purr the exact words “why don’t we move this conversation to the bed, hmm?”
XL ends missing his step and TRIPPING-
With his headphones scattered on the ground, XL - head throbbing and dizzy AF - suddenly hears a voice ask him, “Are you okay?”
Lo and behold, XL tips his chin up and is met with the sight of a strikingly handsome man. Dark hair pulled back into a low bun. One dark eye and one red eye staring down in concern-
And with the exact same voice that was sounding in XL’s ear just a few seconds ago!!
XL quickly clambers up to his feet, stuttering over his words, “Ahaha no worries, I’m completely fine. Probably won’t even bruise later…”
But before he can reach for his headphones, the tall man is already bending down to retrieve them for him-
With the audio book still on.
“Ahh sorry! Let me take those out of your hands,” XL cries as he leaps up to swipe the headphones away, laughing nervously. He haphazardly turns the bluetooth off, managing a shaky smile as the handsome stranger tilts his head in interest.
“No problem. As long as you’re okay…” the stranger says reassuringly. “After all, you can always replace broken headphones. But if you had been severely hurt-“
His eyelids lower as he deepens his gaze on XL.
“I would’ve taken good care of you.”
XL’s legs suddenly feel like jelly, and not just because he crash landed off the moving treadmill.
“I s-see, well that’s very kind of you,” XL says, determined not to stumble on his next few words. “I’m Xie Lian, by the way. It’s nice to meet you…?”
He waits for the stranger to introduce himself.
The stranger finally lets his smirk become visible, mirth dancing among his mismatched eyes.
“You can call me San Lang.”
“Ah, thank you for checking up on me then, San Lang,” XL says sheepishly. He feels his face heat up the longer San Lang (not actually HC, thank goodness!) looks at him with that…that amused expression. “I’m gonna go turn off the treadmill now, since I don’t think I can focus anymore after falling-“
XL turns around and to his horror, the audio book is now playing from his damn phone that is perched on the treadmill dashboard.
HC’s voice rings out clearly.
“Lay down for me, baobei. That’s it, just like that.”
“Don’t move unless I say so, okay?”
“Hmm, your body is so sensitive here…”
XL wants the ground to swallow him while. Especially when he sends San Lang a panicked look, San Lang’s knowing smirk merely widens.
Bastard.
