Note

Out of curiosity, what were Sullivan’s, Amicia’s, and Kara’s backstories? Specifically their time with the Sabbat. Were they any of the ones listed out in the Night Road game or were they original?

... Sorry anon, bad news, but the question you've asked has an answer which is actually a bit complicated.

(Okay it's not REALLY, but you got me talking and I talked far more than you probably actually WANTED. SORRY NOT SORRY)

So basically you gotta keep something in mind: Amicia and Kara were made by @nightingaletrash, and Sullivan is mine. They are all the childer of Millicent Rue, much like the canonical Lasombra courier from Night Road. They were all shovelheads, and after two years and her third surviving fledgling Millicent went "fuck it, I have three kids now, I'm never doing this again." After Millicent basically ditched the three of them, to survive, Kara went into working with artefacts, and Amicia and Sullivan became couriers. Kara would eventually be reunited with her biological daughter, who's a Ravnos named Evie (who you've probably seen me talk about -- Sullivan dotes on her), and at some point Amicia moved to Seattle, started a blood den, and became sexually and later romantically involved with Prince Cross.

That's where the simple bit ends.

In reality it's actually a bit complicated past that because of a few things.

Biggest thing: @nightingaletrash and I both have our own separate continuities. For the most part, 95% of what we talk about happens in both, but I essentially have a copy pasted version of Sullivan running around in her head, and she has one of her lot running around in mine.

The biggest differences in our separate universes are these:

In @nightingaletrash's continuity, Evie was the canon VTMB fledgling and Amicia was the canon VTMNR courier.

In Maddyverse (my continuity), Madeline (thus the name) was the canon VTMB fledgling, and my canon VTMNR courier was someone entirely separate called Elisa Mulgrew, my Gangrel, who is Lettow Kaminsky's childe.

So because of that there's minor differences in backstories. For example, I can't quite remember what Evie's backstory is in Maddyverse, where she's not the Fledgling (I have it somewhere!), but obviously she didn't have to deal with all the bullshit the Fledgling did so while she's still independent she's probably less anti-Sect than she is in @nightingaletrash's continuity. And in @nightingaletrash's continuity, Amicia was the canon VTMNR courier, so in her universe Amicia would've had more money sooner and therefore would've met Prince Cross and become influential over there a lot faster than she would have in Maddyverse.

We don't actually talk about the differences much, we just talk about what each universe has in common and if I've had to I just slightly adapt it in my head to fit Maddyverse, and I've always assumed she did the same thing for hers. I've never asked her her explicit thoughts on it but the way I see it, her version of Sullivan is just a duplicate copy that she can do whatever she wants to because my Sullivan is over here in my head, hers is an AU version of mine. She can do whatever she wants to her version of Sullivan because it doesn't have any effect on my (Maddy)version of Sullivan.

I don't do whatever I want with Kara or Amicia though because we've never actually explicitly discussed this and I don't want to be disrespectful of her ownership of her characters, as I know my interpretation is pretty laissez-faire compared to how most people feel about other people playing with their OCs. In any case, both universes have so much in common it's never had to come up, because they're all Millicent's childer, Amicia always ends up in Seattle, Sullivan always ends up working for Amicia -- the only thing that really changes between our heads is when it happens and what Amicia was up to and what Evie's backstory is.

(Am dying to know what Elisa'd probably be up to in her universe, though -- she'd have never diablerised Aila, and presumably wasn't able to come back to Tucson in 2019 because Lettow explicitly requested her as courier just so he could have his estranged childe close by to keep an eye on her. If Elisa was working in Tucson at the time, she'd have been given all the assignments, not Amicia, so there's no universe where Amicia is the VTMNR courier where Elisa could have been present. And given the Tucson court went tits up in @nightingaletrash's universe when Amicia betrayed them to the SI, either Lettow was destroyed before he could ever be reconciled with Elisa, or he went on the Beckoning before they were ever reunited. Which makes me really sad to think about because Elisa was struggling, and VTMNR was when the hardest part of her life as a vampire was finally put behind her. SO THAT GIVES ME THE SADS. Damn, now I've got a plotbunny biting...)

But if we look at their Doylian backstory it gets even more complicated lmao.

Because like. as a character. Sullivan actually started off as an AU version of another character.

(and feel free to tune out at this point because I realise this actually has nothing to do with your actual question of his IN-UNIVERSE backstory, AT ALL, lmao, sorry, it's more his out-of-universe backstory)

So. Maddyverse is Maddyverse because the fledgling is Madeline Jones, my first ever vampire OC. She had an identical twin sister called Meredith. Meredith went on to marry a Welsh trans man named Jonathan Grey and opened a pharmacy in Seattle. Here's a picture I made of him with Artbreeder before everyone realised how fucked up using AI was:

Meredith was walking home in December 2019 when she got involved in the mass Embrace. She is my canonical VTMB2 main character, although that may change by the time it finally fucking comes out.

I played with Jonathan a bit. I decided after Meredith's disappearance he closed their pharmacy and moved back to the UK, taking their twin daughters with him.

As he was a pharmacist, eventually he got the attention of a Brujah who wanted drugs, and was ghouled. Yeah, Jonathan had a fucking meth lab. He absolutely hated being a ghoul and as he got older and didn't age, he was forced to distance himself from his daughters and basically be a disaster father figure to protect them and also himself.

His Brujah domitor had a Lasombra enemy, who, while fucking with the Brujah, noticed that her ghoul seemed to be pretty resilient to her fuckery. Jonathan was pumped full of Brujah blood, so had a huge "FUCK YOU" streak. Lasombra got distracted trying to fuck with Jonathan and eventually tried to Embrace him.

It took her four attempts, that's how fucking stubborn and how much a fighter Jonathan was. But she managed it. Ended up being a bad idea, though: the first thing Jonathan did when he woke up from his Embrace was stake her ass and leave her out for the sun. And then go back to running his pharmacy.

Problem with this backstory is... Meredith was Embraced in 2019. With the amount of time that passed, by the time Jonathan was finally Embraced we're looking at it being after 2050 in the timeline. So I adored Jonathan and was itching to play him, but I'd never be able to in a modern game because he's too far ahead in the timeline.

But I wanted to play him in VTMNR. I wanted to play him badly. So I tweaked a few things -- he still has the wife that went missing, still has twin daughters, still trans, still Lasombra... but he was Embraced in 1994 instead. He doesn't become as bitter and hateful towards Kindred because he didn't spend thirty or so years as a ghoul, and he had his sisters show up shortly after his Embrace, so he never lost that goofy part of his personality (even if there's very few people who are aware of it).

Given their near-identical appearances, Sullivan is now Jonathan's biological uncle who went missing when Jonathan was very young, almost too young to remember him. The two of them later would meet, towards the end of the 21st century, in Seattle, and Sullivan would attempt to take Jonathan under his wing, but by then Jonathan utterly despised every Kindred he'd ever meet and barely tolerated him. While I haven't decided for certain Jonathan will probably, at some point, be destroyed at Sullivan's hands for Embracing a powerful-ass vampire hunter and siccing him on the vampire populace of Seattle. Even as a Lasombra, given that he was Embraced as a Brujah ghoul, he still has a lot of Brujah traits -- and I don't see Jonathan ever fully toeing the line as a Cainite.

Jonathan might get away alive. Ultimately, he's still got that Brujah in him, and Sullivan doesn't like to physically fight unless he really has to so has few physical skills. But if Prince Cross, his beloved sister's lover, tells him to put him down, then he intends to finish the job. They might end up chasing each other all across the US for decades, who knows... depends if I want Jonathan to live or not I guess, or if I want to keep playing with a story that's nearly a hundred years away and will probably never get to write out (how many VTM fanfics take place in the far future like that?).

UH. ANYWAY. As for Amicia' and Kara's backstories, I'm sure @nightingaletrash will add those on when she can!

The Ward had made a mistake. Had stolen something that had caused the very Skies to lash out, entire worlds at risk from their actions.

Time Itself shrieked in rage at the loss of Its child, or at least that's how every magic user- and the speedsters, pale and shaken and looking sick- had described it.

Someone had taken the young prince of the Infinite, and it was not the Tyrant King, long since sealed away, that lead the charge, but the Queen Regent that many had long since forgotten.

Many forgot that it was not the Dark who courted Time, but Time who courted the Dark. That It was just, if not more so, merciless as Its partner, and would Devour worlds should Its child- still with newdeath soft scales- was not returned.

Which meant that for the heroes, there was now a Clock ticking down ever so quietly. They had to take care of what was a government branch, had to deal with consequences of going over the law, or their World would End in dragon fire.

The anti ecto laws go into effect just before S2E2 “Doctors Disorders”. So when Danny’s entire class, including Sam and Tucker, becomes sick with ghost flu and start exhibiting ghost powers, the GIW swoop in and cart all the sick kids off to a GIW facility. They claim the kids are all ecto contaminated and therefore fall under the anti ecto laws! And the GIW aren’t concerned with trying to help the kids get better. Instead they’re experimenting on them. Danny knows he can’t get into the GIW facility to rescue them on his own without getting captured. So he does the only thing he can do, he goes to the Justice League for help.

The Justice League, and the Justice Dark are all together in the watchtower for a meeting when Danny shows up. He’s an absolute mess because his friends and classmates have all been taken by the GIW. And he latches onto the first person in the room that he sees. Which just so happens to be Batman. Now Batman has a sobbing hysterical ghost child clinging to him! Everyone is super confused. It takes them half an hour to calm Danny down enough that he can explain what the problem is.

When they find out about the anti ecto laws and what the GIW have done they are all horrified and pissed!! They immediately set out to rescue Danny’s classmates. And if they just so happen to accidentally destroy the GIW facility along the way well none of them are to broken up about it. After the kids are all rescued, cured from the ghost flu, and returned to their parents, the Justice League sets out to get the anti ecto laws repealed. They reveal to the whole world just what the GIW did to a whole class of innocent human children while using the anti ecto laws as cover to do it! The whole world is outraged! It only takes two days for the laws to be repealed, and for the GIW to be permanently disbanded.

A few days later Danny Phantom does a live tv interview where he answers questions about ghosts and the ghost zone. He hopes that this will help people better understand ghosts and their true nature.

5. Clan swap AU

AU where nearly everything is the same except everyone's the clan they'd fit most after what they actually are.

Nearly everything. In this AU Grigori is Tremere why yes Sascha's also Tremere here and Norm is a Gangrel, so they can't be Toreador!Nastasya's ancestors, but they still stick together like glue. Elisa and Lettow are Ravnos and only survived the massacres because they were both on their own when their Antediluvian was destroyed and they Frenzied. Wendy's a Ventrue, so her political machinations are more in the spotlight than in Maddyverse. Maddy is, of course, Tremere, but Oliver is another Ravnos because of his sleight-of-hand tricks from when he was human. Jonathan is Brujah. Not sure about Sullivan, he's probably from a social clan like the Hecata, the Tremere or the Nosferatu.

In this one Alexander's probably a childe of Mithras lol.

4. Mass Effect AU

I like to think about what my OCs were up to when the Reapers landed lmao

In this AU, Kindred are all stuck on earth. Caine's curse was for him to wander the earth forever, so any Kindred that leave the earth's orbit go into torpor until they're returned. Alien blood doesn't sustain them, it just makes them sick. Vampirism is a strictly human only condition, and the Masquerade is incredibly hard to maintain these days and is more fragile than ever; it's now an open secret that there are superhumans around somewhere, and that the government is covering it up...

So when the Reapers show up... many Kindred just wake up one night to find their city flattened, if their havens weren't destroyed in the initial wave. Their food is either leaving the planet or getting mowed down. The Masquerade is quickly fucked to hell and for a long time they're thought to be brainwashed Reaper forces given magical powers.

Many Kindred are destroyed in their havens in the initial landings having never known what hit them. Many more are destroyed in their shelters during the day as the war goes on. The Gangrel and Tzimisce quickly become the most populous clans left because they just schloop! into the earth every day. There are a lot of mass Embraces to give the humans left behind an edge. The third most popular clan are the Brujah -- not because they're surviving well, they're not, they're dropping like flies like every other, but because they're doing the most mass embraces because they are living to fuck up Reaper shit.

What are my OCs up to in this AU? In this AU, they were Embraced at the same time as they are in Maddyverse, so they're all ancillae at the very least --

Rose wakes up buried under dozens of feet of rubble after her apartment building goes down on the very first day and legit thinks that another September 11 happened until she and Sascha manage to finally find a way to dig themselves out of rubble after nights of being trapped. She's one of the first Kindred to go "to hell with the Masquerade" and starts just... publicly helping as many humans as she can and feeding. She and Sascha very quickly find themselves ensconced in a human resistance team, so they're well fed and Rose's Obeah means the humans are dying less than in other resistances... so long as they can last until nightfall.

Tiffany is along for the ride when Mithras, of course, takes advantage of the situation by using Presence to get a bunch of humans to worship him as a sun god, because is he really Mithras if he doesn't take advantage of the situation by using Presence to get a bunch of humans to worship him as a sun god. Communication in Earth is an absolute mess, so it takes a while for Roger de Camden and Mithras to realise that not only is this issue not a London issue, it's not even an Earth issue, and that it's happening galaxy wide. At that news, Roger Embraces Tiffany with a vial of his pre-ritual vitae, and the three of them go into torpor in the earth to see if maybe they can sleep through this one. They emerge a couple of centuries later when earth's population has recovered enough to start rebuilding the ruins they're buried under, relieved that the planet is still, uh, there, but also not quite sure what the fuck just happened.

The Vykosoviches are in Staten Island and while some of it has been destroyed by Reaper laser beams, the Reapers are mainly focused on the skyscrapers of Manhatten and the immediately adjacent boroughs. Their haven is left alone that first day, allowing them to survive long enough to quickly realise "uh, yeah, we're sleeping in the earth today." They start doing some recon but there's still a lot of confusion in the chaos, and Ilias cel Frumos quickly tracks them down and tells them where to find Rose and Sascha. They all end up part of Sascha's resistance group.

Elisa and Lettow have no idea what the fuck is going on. The Reapers are focusing on the major cities like London, Beijing, New York City, etc, first, so Tucson isn't immediately attacked. All they know is that they wake up one night and the Extranet and Internet don't work, which is weird and sometimes happens, but okay, maybe their coverage will be back by morning. At Elysium, Lettow learns that this is happening to all of Tucson. While prowling the streets doing her usual stuff, Elisa notices something pretty weird -- there's a bit more activity on the streets and the humans are really buzzing. The first trickle of human refugees from LA, the closest city to be attacked, had arrived in Phoenix during the day, and with the internet fucked and landlines long obsolete, word is being spread of the attacks by mouth. Elisa spends some time quizzing the humans, realises "fuck, this is serious", manages to get in contact with the local equivalent of Nines Rodrigues and heads to Elysium to pass on the news and talk about what the fuck they're going to do. When they get there the Camarilla are starting to realise shit is weird out there and that it's time to start battening down the hatches. After that, after what they've heard about the Reapers and the shit they're wrecking, Elisa and Lettow start sleeping in the basement...

Sullivan is in a small town at the time and has no idea what's going on until he tries to get to a bigger city and the skyline is gone and he can't drive further because there's literal fucking rubble everywhere, what the fuck just happened and what's that hugeass thing moving around in the distance -- IS THAT A FUCKING GIANT LASERBEAM?! He quickly nopes back out to rural America and keeps his head down in towns so small that the Reapers don't even look at them before Shepard has gotten rid of them. He is probably the only one of my OCs that actually keeps the Masquerade during the whole thing because of how remote he is the whole time. I don't know if she'd cooperate, but if Evie is with him at the time, he'd insist they don't even try to find Kara or the others until they hear good news because holy shit there are giant robots out there. They'd spend their nights rotating between small towns because of Evie's bane and just keeping faaaaaaar out of the way of any settlement the Reapers might attack. Because of how far away they are from the cities, it takes far, far longer for information to trickle through to them, but Sullivan would be two hundred years old by then -- he can be patient.

3. World of Future Darkness

This is an actual canon AU, but yeah. In my version of this AU the Lasombra are going the way of the Salubri and Cappadocians because they're huge Masquerade risks and the world is so reliant on technology they stick out like a sore thumb among the humans. (Same thing was actually probably happening in the Mass Effect AU, but Cyberpunk has a bigger emphasis on the integration of tech than ME does.)

In this AU, what my OCs are up to --

Sullivan is estranged from Amicia because she offered him a way to get around the Lasombra bane and insisted he pay for it, and Sullivan was like "1. Dude, if I haven't already proven myself to you a thousand times over enough that I still have to pay for shit from you then fuck you, and also 2. LASOMBRA PRIDE FUCK YOU". He's a bit darker in character in this AU because as hard as it's been for him to survive in his fledgling and neonate years, it's way harder in this AU when he leaves his home territory. At home he's fine because Jane's still obnoxiously rich so he has a very luddite haven, and he has a network of contacts, so he can keep himself alive easily. When he has to travel (and he does from time to time, because he sorely misses it), it's harder than ever to get by. Sure, some things are easier -- he never gets shot any more because the proliferation of targeting subroutines means that most people with a gun can't aim for shit at anything their tech can't pick up, buuuut they're also faster and stronger because of their cyborg limbs and shit, so now humans can be pretty damn dangerous. At least whenever anyone gets pissy about not being able to scan him he can easily claim he's got some kind of scrambler on him and no, I will not take it off before talking to your boss, now let me the fuck in so I can collect my blood or my boss is not going to be happy.

Madeline Jones totally has a plugin for people to download to append to their translator software so they know what the fuck she is saying, and she is so fucking happy about it. It takes Strauss a while to get used to it. Also she's still the LA Chantry's secret weapon and probably either has control of LA by now, or could take it on a whim if she wanted.

Half of Nastasya's cybernetic equipment isn't even real, it's just polished and coloured bone vic'd to look a certain way. Her business has expanded into restoration of biological limbs for people who regret getting prosthetics or have trouble adapting to them.

Norm is a ripperdoc who only sees patients at night and usually sees rich people only, but, presuming Staten Island is still Anarch territory in this time, if any Anarchs refer people to him he'll see them for free as even in Maddyverse they have arrangements with them to be left alone. He sends some of his patients to Nastasya if they want cosmetic work done. Grigori poses as their landlord.

2. His Dark Masquerade AU

Daemon AU? Daemon AU!

There's a few versions of this around -- some where daemons die after the Embrace, or become the Beast, etc. In my personal daemon AU most daemons become unsettled again after the Embrace, and resettle after fifteen years (eg around the time they're released by their sire). It severs fledglings from mortals even more than in the main universe because this means they can't be around any humans not in the know at all unless they were Embraced young enough.

There are exceptions to the above rules though -- much like how some people have same sex daemons, some people's daemons don't unsettle at all, Tzimisce daemons are permanently unsettled, and the daemons of Embraced children might find a preferred form after fifteen years, but still don't permanently settle.

Kindred are also able to be separated from their daemons by long distances, much like witches.

In this AU:

Elisa had a caracal pre-Embrace. She mistook Riga, who was separated from Lettow, for an injured pet, and took Riga back to her vet office and got in contact with Lettow. It was very uncomfortable for Lettow while she was wrangling Riga. Lettow pretended his daemon was hidden in his clothes, got Riga returned to him, and later Embraced her. When she eventually found out Riga was a daemon, she got very, very embarrassed. Her daemon eventually resettled into a grizzly bear.

Sullivan constantly freaks people out because his daemon is so tiny he looks like he's walking around without one. In reality, his daemon is a 6mm jumping spider called Molly who lives in his ear so he can hear her when she whispers to him. Which just unnerves people even more when he appears to be talking to himself. His transitioning journey was also easier because a lot of people's responses to him coming out were "oh, so that's why your daemon is female!" Many people, upon finding out that this scary-ass Lasombra's pre-Embrace daemon was a golden retriever, end up finding the whole thing rather amusing.

Wendy's daemon is a white ferret called Sammie, who's even more hyperactive and has much worse impulse control than she does. In this AU she's a lot more cautious because she's constantly trying to discourage Sammie's shit. Unfortunately, because Sammie can now be separated from Wendy, he has gone completely mad with power and she's constantly chasing after him trying to discourage him from doing dumb shit (if he wasn't distracted on the way to doing dumb shit, anyway). Sammie is one of the few daemons who didn't unsettle upon Embrace -- all he did was turn from a sable colouring to white.

Mundane AU

Yep. I have an AU where they're just normal fucking people. Mithras is a multimillionaire business CEO, Roger was born into an organised crime family that got wiped out by a rival, Elisa hit and killed Aila with her car, and Nastasya rents a house with this on-and-off gay couple that she didn't mean to stay with but now can't live her life without. I think about this AU the most but I only know what a few of my OCs are up to in it.
