Hi! I wanted to ask you a few questions about 91w since I can't ask the author and you've just finished reading the story.
Spoilers for the people who haven't read "91 whiskey"
How do you think did I get it correctly that Cas wanted to see how Dean would look with a hairstyle from the photograph in the sophomore year?
"Cas kisses him again, kisses him harder. His fingers sweep into Dean’s hair—and then tighten into fists, pulling upwards and—
“Hey!”
“Please,” Cas says. “Just for a moment—just let me see what it would—”
“No way. No way! Get off. Hey—quit it. I swear to—”"
And I didn't get about Cas' job. In the second part when this thing happened with the interviewer:"“Disagreements, huh?”
Castiel opens his mouth, but finds the words struggling soundlessly in his throat. He swallows, tries again.
“He wouldn’t say what the disagreement was, exactly,” the interviewer says. “You mind filling me in?”
Did Cas panic and left because he had to talk about his time in the army? His previous job was it, right? Or maybe it was about smth else that wasn't in the story...
aahhh thanks for asking <33 thanks for giving me a reason to talk about it more since i apparently can't shut up about this fic lol
so the first question, yeah you got that right! cas tried to part dean's hair in the middle like dean had it in the high school picture! so the pulling upwards thing cas does, i think, is that he takes the ends and try to make them flick up, like doorhandles as komodobits describes it.
the second one, about the disagreement at work. my initial thought was that it was about his ptsd. but then i talked with my sis a bit (who hasn't read 91w, but has heard enough about it for a lifetime haha) and she suggested that it was because cas is queer. which makes a lot of sense. idk how usual it was to directly out a queer person back in 53, but it seems likely that cas being queer was spoken about as a "disagreement" between him and his previous workplace. and the previous boss is warning the interviewer about who cas really is.
if anyone thought something else, please share <3 im actually wondering about the last one too. and if you have more questions, feel free to ask! <33

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
‘It’s called “carving a pumpkin,” Gabriel, not “brutal pumpkin murder”. Show some decorum and seasonal goodwill.’ Matt shook his head with mock disgust.
Gabriel and Castiel were decorating the bakery for Halloween. Felicity had insisted that they use real pumpkins ‘for authenticity.’ Gabriel had argued that fake ones would have been cheaper. Castiel privately agreed with his brother, but was loathe to argue with his girlfriend. Real pumpkins it was.
Gabe looked up to grin at his cousin. ‘Well, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. And you can’t carve a pumpkin without making a huge mess, they’re just not built for it.’ He waved the knife around as he spoke to punctuate his thoughts, pumpkin guts dripping everywhere. Jilomena’s mouth turned into a moue of disgust, although hers was completely authentic.
‘Yes, well, the only thing frightening at the present is how you’re holding that carving knife,’ Matt grumbled. ‘You’re going to have someone’s eye out.’
‘I’ll add it to the decorations!’ Gabe piped up cheerfully.
‘No real eyes in the decorations. And Gabriel, kindly keep your mess on the countertops. I don’t wish to clean the whole kitchen.’ Cas ducked just in time to avoid a small projectile of pumpkin that had been aimed at his head.
Felicity continued to scroll through her phone, completely unperturbed by the goings on. Goings on that she indirectly had caused. ‘Why does every costume have to be sexy? I don’t want to be sexy, I want to be the reason why the night is feared, muhahahahaha!’
Jil rolled her eyes. ‘You would. Personally, I like dressing up in a sexy costume. Like a fuzzy black kitten.’ Matt’s eyes lit up as he remembered the treat she’d had in store for him at the end of the evening last Halloweeen, when she’d revealed her ‘tail.’ ‘Or like Bride of Dracula or something. Maybe I’ll do that this year….’
‘You look delicious enough to bite.’ Matt swept her hair to the side and playfully bit her neck, to catcalls from the others.
‘Get a room,’ Gabe sneered. ‘You’ll rot the pumpkins!’ Jil responded by poking out her tongue in a most ladylike fashion, then settled down to looking at costumes with Felicity once more.
‘We’ve got the office Halloween party to think about. It’s next weekend.’ Fell indicated one of the costumes on the page with a fingernail.
‘Ah yes.’ Jil squinted at the phone, making a face to show what she thought of Fell’s choice of costume. ‘Theoretically, do you think brewing up a pot of special edition neon-green slime is honouring the season adequately, or would that breach workplace regulations if I tipped it over the boss?’ She laughed, not meaning a word of it.
‘Try it and see.’ Fell poked her playfully in the side. Jil poked back.
‘Cat fight! Cat fight!’ Gabe crowed. When the girls stopped after a few halfhearted pokes, he dejectedly went back to his carving. ‘Ah, kitten fight.’ He sighed, disappointed.
‘Better luck next time,’ Jil laughed.
‘Who wants coffee?’ Matt started to put his jacket on. ‘I’ll run down and get some.’
‘Me! I’ll get us some donuts from the back.’ Fell stood up, Jil quickly following to help her.
‘Perfect.’ Matt smiled happily. ‘How did you know I was getting hungry?’
‘Because you’re always hungry.’ Fell patted Matt’s stomach with a wink as she went past him.
The girls headed for the kitchen while Matt took the coffee order before disappearing. Gabe and Cas continued working on their masterpieces, while the benevolent grins of the pumpkins watched over all.

Destiel Trope Collection 2020 Day 10: Enemies to Lovers
It's a Match! | @suckerfordeansfreckles
Rating: Teen & Up Word Count: 2015 Main Tags/Warnings: pining, online dating, getting together Summary: Dean has seen the guy a handful of times, mostly at Charlie’s parties or when out and about with her — it’s only been six times that Dean is aware of, actually. Not that he counted. Well. He did, maybe, count a little. But that’s only because the guy is seriously gorgeous, and also seems to seriously hate Dean. Like, frowns and dark stares and leaving the room when Dean enters it. And that is most definitely the only reason why Dean keeps track of their meetings. It has nothing to do with the fact that, for whatever stupid reason, Dean feels all fuzzy and happy and warm around this stupid, scruffy, handsome, dark-haired and blue-eyed Cas-guy. Something about him just… does things to Dean’s head.
In The Ballroom | @gii-heylittleangel
Rating: General Word Count: 2594 Main Tags/Warnings: lovers to enemies to lovers, broken relationship, getting back together, false mentions of cheating Summary: The high school dance was useless in Castiel's opinion; there was nothing to do, people were incredibly annoying, and he would be alone. But, having Charlie Bradbury as his best friend, he had no choice but to go; after all, there was a tiny chance he would get tacos after the party. Castiel did not get tacos but he got something a lot better.
Ring a Bell for the Righteous Man | @pray4jensen
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 3003 Main Tags/Warnings: Enemies to Lovers, Royalty/Fantasy AU, Soul Bond, Marriage, Angst with a Happy Ending, Dubious Consent Summary: An hour passes and the prince doesn't bed him. Dean thinks that maybe the prince doesn't have any intention of doing it at all, and if that's the case, it'll be Dean who'll face the consequences. So, thumbing a finger down the length of Cas' wings, Dean taunts, ""I thought you promised Lord Alastair that I wouldn't be able to walk, your highness."" Dean pauses. ""Are you doubting yourself, my lord?""
Addicted | @verobatto-angelxhunter
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 3671 Main Tags/Warnings: Season 4/5 canon divergent, Destiel, slow burn, Badass! Castiel, first kiss, first time, explicit sexual content, canon typical violence. Summary: Dean can't get Castiel out of his mind. Everytime the angel is in front of him, is hypnotizing. He needs to know what is going on with him. Why Castiel is so irresistible? And why he feels that empty everytime the angel isn't near him.
the light of falling stars | @procasdeanating
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 4980 Main Tags/Warnings: Alien!Cas, wing fic, inspired by a movie (enemy mine) Summary: … when Lieutenant Dean Winchester and the two ships under his command engaged in combat with a Seraph squadron. Two army ships were destroyed, while one fighter, presumably Lt. Winchester’s, made a forced landing on a nearby uninhabited class D planet after triggering the emergency protocol. The ongoing search has not produced conclusive results. Lt. Winchester is classified as missing in action…
First Impressions | @suckerfordeansfreckles
Rating: Teen & Up Word Count: 7254 Main Tags/Warnings: hospital AU, ftm trans Cas, top surgery, mentions of medical stuff, sharing a room Summary: When Cas wakes for the first time after his surgery, there’s sunlight tentatively streaming through the window to his right. It takes him a while of uncoordinated blinking and thinking until he realizes where he is, why he’s here. And then the giddiness comes, sudden and overwhelming, when he looks down at his chest and there is none. The reality is almost too much to grasp and his hands shake a little when he tries to raise them to touch. He's happy, and giddy, and so thankful. And then a nurse wheels in his new roommate, one very obnoxious and flirty Mr. Winchester. Cas just... cannot wait to watch all of this play out.

Sam, in comparison, always seemed to be the smart, studious one – until he reprogrammed the AI in their neighbours’ house to play ‘Happy Birthday’ at the loudest possible volume while keeping all the doors and windows firmly locked. It had taken two experts seven hours to undo the coding that Sam had managed to integrate into the house’s programming. So, yes. They had been exceptional even from the beginning. And when John Winchester crossed one too many people, his sons inherited his beloved ship, and took to the cosmos doing what they knew best: stealing. And they were damn good at it too. Almost unrivalled, across their own galaxy and even those neighbouring. Almost.

That doesn’t mean he is going to like it, though. Especially when their captain is the embodiment of everything Castiel despises. Determined to earn his freedom, Castiel settles into the life of an outlaw. King Castiel is severe, aloof, and no more happy about their hasty wedding than Dean. Marital bliss is the last state either of them expects to reach, but as Dean spends more time in his new home, he and Castiel slowly begin to settle into a partnership that allows them to put the needs of their kingdom before their own feelings. The longer they spend together, though, the more those feelings develop, daring them both to wonder if they might ever be husbands in more than just name.

He's been an annoying thorn in Dean's side since day one - and the hunter doesn't see that change anytime soon.

I know it's been years, but I finaly came around to finish this little ficlet.
@castiel-left-his-mark-on-me prompted this with this post.
____
Castiel looks up as the little doorbell rings for the hundredth time of this day. This means, a new customer just entered the shop. A smile lights up his face – genuine, not as any sales pitch – as he sees the man walking towards the counter.
Castiel remembers when he saw him the first time, three days ago. There are often soldiers from the military station nearby, who orders their meal here. So does said man. He stood in line, waiting to give up his order, in his neat military uniform and a stern expression on his face. It took Castiel a simple smile to break it, though. He was amazed how the deep green eyes lit up, as he smiled back at him. Castiel couldn’t help but looking after the man, as he left.
He ordered his food daily since then.
“Hi, how are you doing today?”, Castiel greets him friendly.
“I’m alright, and yourself?” The man’s voice is rough. He coughs slightly.
“I’m doing better… now.” It’s true. The day was hectic and Castiel yearns for closing time. But seeing a friendly – and damn good looking – face lights up his mood.
The man’s cheeks colors in a slight red and he immediately looks up to the menu boards above.
“I… I’ll take the cheeseburger. And some fries.”, he orders, still scanning the range.
Castiel enters the order into the register. “Extra bacon?”, he asks, remembering how he insisted on this the last days.
“Uhm.. sure! Yeah, extra bacon, totally!” He smiles thankfully.
“I remembered.” Castiel winks at him, seeing how his opposite blushes a bit more. “Do you want anything else – need anything else?”
“No, that’s it, thank you.”
“Okay”, Castiel completes the order in the register, “and, what’s your name?” He will give it a try.
The man looks at him, hesitating a moment, but then smiles again. “Dean. I’m Dean.”
Castiel gives him a once over while confessing “That’s a really pretty name.”
“Uh, thank you… had it for a little while”, Dean responds with a shrug, still blushing.
Castiel giggles. He doesn’t know if Dean means to be funny or just hasn’t thought about his words, but he likes it nevertheless.
For a moment, Dean looks at him wary, then joins the laughter, head-shaking about the situation.
“Are you gonna give me that order or do I need to read your mind?”, Castiel’s boss barks from out of the kitchen.
“Sorry, Chuck!”, Castiel replies, pushing the right button to print the order. He smiles again before turning to hand the paper into the back. When he faces the counter again, he sees Dean standing some steps aside.
Unfortunately, there are more customers who want to order, so Castiel gets back to work. He stares regularly at Dean, though. He observes Castiel’s movements the whole time.
A ring signals Castiel that another order is ready. For a second he hesitates, checking out Dean one more time. The man, gathering some more self-assurance through the distance, winks at him. That’s all Castiel needs to finally pick up the pen, actually meant to mark different meals in same packages, and write down his phone number on the paper bag.
He hands it to Dean, who stepped closer to the counter again. Dean rolls his eyes funnily as he sees the big numerics.
“Have a nice day”, Castiel wishes in the typical salesman manner, which causes Dean to chuckle.
The next day, Castiel has a day off. His phone doesn’t ring once. He won’t admit it, but he’s slightly disappointed.
Dean comes back the day after.
“Hello Dean.”
“Hi…“, Dean pauses, looking down at Castiel’s chest. “…Castiel”, he finishes his greeting.
“You only now looked on my name tag?”
“Well… I got distracted” Dean smirks, then nods towards the menu boards. “I’ll take the same again.”
“Of course.” Castiel passes Dean’s order to Chuck. When he returns, Dean has stepped aside far enough for the next customer, but is leaning heavily on the counter.
“You weren’t here yesterday.”
“Don’t I deserve a day off?” It’s clear that it dawns on Dean just now that Cas doesn’t spent every day at his work and he smiles awkwardly.
“I just missed you.”
“Good that we are both here today then”, Cas answers in between his work routine of taking orders and giving the food out.
Dean searches for an answer, but doesn’t seem to find the right words, so he settles for a small nod. They just smile at each other every now and then. When Dean’s food is ready, Castiel grabs the pen again. Maybe Dean is more of a writing guy. He scribbles down his email address to hand it over with a wink. He clearly sees Dean blush before he makes off.
“Hello Dean.” Castiel’s smile isn’t as bright as it was the last times. There was neither an e-mail nor a call from Dean and he gets that unspoken message. He decides to switch to a professional worker-customer-relationship before he’s making an even bigger idiot out of himself. “Cheeseburger with extra bacon and fries, right?”
Before he can answer, a redhaired girl next to him interposes. “Make that two!”, she says with a bright smile. “We’ll sit right over there”, and with that she drags Dean to the nearest table.
Castiel blinks. Well, now he knows, why Dean didn’t contact him. He still feels like a total dumbass now. To further not any more embarrassments, he tries his best to focus on the upcoming orders. He doesn’t dare to look over to them and ignores the giggling coming from their table, which he doesn’t consider part of his workplace for now.
Admittedly his plan doesn’t work out, when their order is ready and he needs to call them over.
“Order is ready”, he announces and places their plates to the side, hoping they will just pick them up, but neither Dean nor his company reacts. They are too focused on their conversation.
“Two cheeseburger, extra bacon with fries”, Castiel declares, louder this time. Still no reaction. Castiel feels lost behind the counter. There is no other work to busy himself with and clearly, he’s responsible that the customers are getting their food hot.
Dean and the girl are whispering with each other. Neither of them takes notice of their food. Castiel takes a deep breath before he calls: “Dean”.
Dean’s head shoots up and he looks at Castiel like a deer caught in the headlight.
“Your food’s ready”, Castiel declares and point at the plates. For a split second he panics he might have to serve him his order, but the girl kicks him very clearly against the shin with a bright grin and Dean gets up to come over.   “Thanks”, he mumbles and avoids looking at Castiel. He can’t blame him.
“Hey!”, Chuck’s voice catches him off guard, “It’s pretty quiet. Take your break now!”
Castiel would rather not, but there is no use in debating with Chuck. Besides, he appreciates to sit down for a while. He takes some of the French fries as his break meal, puts his little apron aside and sits down at the different end of the diner. He doesn’t want to look over to Dean and the girl, but with how wild they are gesticulating while whispering suspiciously low, it’s impossible not to be distracted. The girl is pointing clearly at Castiel and Dean pushes her hand down again and again. He tries just as much not to look at Castiel as he does vice versa. Neither of them succeeds.
Before Castiel can decide if it’s worth it to eat his fries in the constant rain outside, the girl leaves Dean’s table, only to come over and take a seat at Castiel’s table.
“Hi!”
She grins wide; he tilts his head in confusion.
Dean, who followed involuntarily, clears his throat as he sits down next to her, right in front of Castiel.
“Um, this is Charlie”, he introduces.
“I’m his best friend”, Charlie declares and winks at Castiel.
Castiel can’t help but share the genuine smile. He likes her.
“Hi Charlie, it’s nice to meet you. I’m-”
“Cas, yes, I know”, she interrupts him, “Dean already chew my ear off about you.”
Dean looks like he’d like to strangle his best friend right here and now.
“Oh no!”, Charlie announces dramatically even before she takes a look at her watch. “I totally forgot the time. I have to go, have fun!” And with that she’s already gone.
Both of them stay in awkward silence for a moment, unsure what to do now.
“Sorry about her, she’s a Chatty Cathy.”
“Just like you, it seems.” Dean breaks into a laugh about Cas’ words. Cas enjoys the sound of it and continues with his meal. Without invitation Dean takes some of his fries to.
“So, what are you doing?”, he asks.
“That’s what I want to know!”, Chuck yells from the counter. “I’m not paying you to sit around all day!”
A look on his watch reveals, that Cas indeed overrun his fifteen-minute break.
“I have to work”, he declares and shoves the rest of his meal to Dean and puts his apron back on. Before he steps behind the counter, he turns to Dean once again. “I’ll be off at 9, though.” Dean winks at him.
It’s a quarter past nine when Cas finally leaves the diner. Just as he breathes in the fresh air, his phone rings. He answers with a smile.
“Hello Dean.”

We are incredibly lucky to belong to a fandom that is constantly producing a high volume of fanworks– but sometimes, it can be a bit overwhelming. To that end, DeanCasFix proudly presents Challenge Highlights, a selection of our favourite stories and artwork from recent Dean/Cas fests and challenges.
Here are some of our top picks from the 2018 round of the Dean/Cas Big Bang.
Autonomy by A_Diamond, art by telltaleofthestars
Wordcount: 26,556
Rating: E
Summary: Dean had his share of difficult sentinel partners at his underfunded, overworked police department in Kansas. When he gets a position on a national investigation team in D.C., he’s not expecting the biggest challenge of his career to be his new partner. A sentinel who thinks his cybernetic augmentations render guides like Dean unnecessary, Cas proves every bit as difficult to pin down as their first case together: a hunt through suburbs, slums, and the vast virtual landscape in search of a missing prodigy whose technology could bring down governments—or make them invincible.
(don’t) fear the reaper by justkeeponwriting, art by starmouse123
Wordcount: 51,389
Rating: E
Summary: Castiel is a grim reaper – and a very experienced one at that. He has negotiated thousands of deals to keep the balance of souls, acquiring years of life energy from mortals who have too many years in their life span, and has passed it onto those who have less. But even Castiel isn’t prepared when he accidentally convinces a mortal called Dean Winchester to give him his soul, and with it, a complete control of his life.
The Firmament Field by whichstiel, art by subtextiel
Wordcount: 53,238
Rating: M
Summary: Heaven is falling, the power grid failing. Dean and Castiel set off on a daring mission to stabilize Heaven, but the operation goes south. Captured by angels, their memories are wiped and they’re sent back to Earth.
Although their allies include denizens of Heaven, mortals on Earth, and even dragons, Dean and Castiel are presumed lost. Before Heaven can be saved, they must find their way back to each other.
Green Corners by rustling_pages, art by harplesscastiel
Wordcount: 72,533
Rating: T
Summary: After the death of his son, there is nothing left for Dean other than his garden market. His days are tough, the nights are tougher, but at least there's a reason to get up in the morning. And with the new boom on do-it-yourself garden magic, his business is going okay.
Amidst the passing of time, there is only one thing that distracts him from functioning like a normal human being: Diagonally across the street, in the display window of that traditional Herb and Potion shop, plants are dying in masses.
Storming in to confront the owner goes differently than he imagined, though. Castiel Novak may be the kind of guy who wears old-fashioned mage robes and keeps his shop in sweltering heat, but he's also a talented herbalist, the kindest soul Dean has ever met, and utterly beautiful.
Not that Dean is ready for anything other than friendship.(Not that Cas doesn’t get sick a bit too often.)
Half City Lights by starespressos, art by possiblyeggs
Wordcount: 103,400
Rating: E
Summary: Ever since Dean’s near-death experience as a child, he’s been interested in finding gods, and his research has narrowed down to Greek mythology. Sam knows well enough that taking advantage of this is the only way to ever get Dean into an airplane, and decides to throw his destination wedding in Mykonos. In addition to finally getting to explore the locations he has only read about so far, Dean makes a bunch of new friends, one of which is Castiel, a local business owner. Together, they embark on a sea voyage around the Greek islands. There’s surprises on the horizon, though…

Summary: (Inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma)
Dean Winchester has everything. He’s got a great house, a steady job, a beautiful car, a loyal best friend, and (most importantly) an abundance of great advice. He wants nothing more than for everybody else in his life to know what it feels like to be as happy as he is. After successfully seeing his brother Sam married off to Eileen Leahy, Dean turns his attention to his newest friend: Charlie Bradbury. Despite his best friend Cas’s apprehensions, Dean does his best to improve her life. Thing is, none of his attempts at matchmaking seem to work. In fact, Dean’s carefully laid plans for Charlie (and for himself) quickly start to fall apart. Why is Charlie so oblivious? And why is Dean so upset when Cas’s ex returns to town?
Dean’s got a lot to learn about his family and friends, but mostly, he’s got a lot to learn about himself.

Summary: It’s been five years since the workplace accident that killed Dean Winchester’s father, and conditions at Roman Mills have not gotten any safer. When Dean confides in his friend Charlie, she introduces him to Cas Novak, a union organizer passionate about workers’ rights.
As they work together on the union drive, Dean and Cas bond over good food, trashy TV, Castiel’s introduction to LARPing, and their shared commitment to improving the lives of the workers at the sawmill. Cas, however, is all too conscious of the power imbalance between them.
And then there's Roman Enterprises, determined to stop them from forming a union, even if it means breaking the law, with devastating consequences for Dean and Cas’s nascent romance.

Summary: According to the tourist guide for St. Mary’s Harbour, the quaint little town nestled between the mountains boasts a magical lake with an island where the local goddess resides. Dean is the High Priest of the island's temple (or priest, as Dean likes to point out, since you can't really be a High Priest if you're the only priest) and is rather unhappy with the recent influx of tourists.
When Sam introduces Dean to Castiel Novak, the town’s new director of the tourist board, Dean is immediately smitten, despite his initial reservations. But when Castiel congratulates Dean on the fantastic CGI effects in the town’s infomercial and highlights reel, Dean doesn’t quite know what to tell him.

Summary: Dean lovingly cares for the old theater that his father left him. The Impala Theater is a haven for movie lovers from everywhere. Dean shows the classics and the new films, and occasionally some obscure stories find their way onto his screens. When a crate is delivered containing seven films that seem to have no history. Dean watches them and is immediately sucked in. The story of the PI Castiel and the crime-filled city that never sleeps, is right up his film-noir-loving alley. There’s something about the film though, something mysterious, that makes him want to learn more about the characters, the actors, and even the production company. The more he searches, the less he seems to know.

Summary: Recently demoted from his job as a field agent, Castiel is back behind a desk. It’s humiliating to be here with the same coworkers he left behind only a few months ago, but he’s bound and determined to keep his head down, do his job, and prove to his boss that he won’t make the same mistakes twice. Everything is going as planned until he finds himself distracted by one of the people he’s charged with monitoring: Dean Winchester.

Summary: One night, after watching Dean pick up yet another girl while they're out at a bar, Cas heads to the local diner. Over the years his feelings of attraction have only deepened into something more, and he wishes desperately to go back to the time before he was in love with his best friend. His wish is granted in an unexpected way: he wakes up in the hospital the next morning with broken limbs - an arm and a leg- and a fractured memory with the last four years missing.

Summary: When Castiel Novak discovers he’s unexpectedly inherited a farmhouse outside small town Caroline, Kansas, he decides it’s an opportunity to make some major changes in his life. As the youngest son in the powerful Novak family, he’s always been sheltered and expected to do as he was told. His one prior attempt at independence ended disastrously, destroying his innocence and trust. If he had his way, he’d be the old recluse in the spooky old house. Unfortunately, the house needs some major repairs to be livable.
Fortunately Caroline has a jack of all trades who’s available to help with all of the things Cas doesn’t know how to do – for a price. Dean Winchester apparently either knows how to do everything himself, or knows someone. Everything would be wonderful, if only Dean would stop chipping away at the walls Cas so carefully built.

MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
You were practically hopping on one foot across the room, trying to catch your 6 month old german shepherd pup that had chosen to run off with one of your shoes just as you were about to leave the house. You were already late and in no mood for any of his shenanigans. Being late what not all that unusual for you though. You were a busy person, but when you were in a moment you gave yourself to it fully. No matter if it was the kids you worked with needing attention, your puppy needing love or a file you needed to read over. The last was what had slowed you this morning before everything started going wrong.
“Drop it Santo,” You pointed at him and spoke in a firm tone when you finally managed to get him cornered. Santo stared back at you for a few seconds before he reluctantly did as he was told.
“Good boy,” you mumbled as you retrieved your shoe and put it on. You led him out back and into his pin. You checked to make sure he had plenty of fresh water before you petted him goodbye and practically ran for your car. Even if you were busy and he was a brat, he still deserved your love. He was a sweet puppy and he was going to grow up to be an amazing dog.
Just as you put your key into the ignition, your phone rang somewhere down in your purse. “Damnit.”
To say it had been a shitty morning would be an understatement. You had woken up late. You had managed to drop Santo’s kibbles all over the floor, not that he had minded. After you had finally shooed the puppy out of the way and got it all cleaned up, you realized you had turned on your coffee machine without filling it with water so that smoke was now covering your kitchen. It was a lousy morning, and now you were late and about to get scolded by Crowley McCloud.
“Hey boss. I am so so sorry,” you started as you picked up the phone, but he quickly interrupted you.
“I need you to drive down town. We got a call from the police station. Ben and two other kids are holding up a convenient store. Cas is on his way down there, but I need you to go too.”
Damnit. This day just wasn’t getting any better was it?
“On my way. Text me the address,” you replied and hung up the phone. You connected your workplace app your GPS and a few seconds later you had the directions from Crowley. You pulled the car out of the driveway and sped downtown while you thought about Ben.
Ben Braeden had arrived at The Clouds a few months ago. He was 17 years old, and everyone knew The Clouds would be his last home before adulthood. Ben had been shipped through the system and bounced from place to place ever since his mother OD’ed when he was 11. Ben was a good kid, but he was easy to influence- If he ended up in the wrong crowd, things could go sideways fast. That had happened in the past. Actually that was the very reason why Ben never found a steady home. Still he seemed to be doing better at The Clouds, and everyone had been hopeful for him. Until today. You had no idea what had happened or why Ben was in that store, but you knew if he was to have any hope of a future, you would have to get to the cops and fast. You had seen episodes like this before. They tended to spiral out of control quickly because the officers forgot they were dealing with scared kids and not rationally thinking adults.
As you pulled into the parking lot, you breathe a sigh of relief when you saw one of The Clouds’ vehicles was already parked among the cop cars. Cas was already here, and hopefully he had managed to get some sense of control over the situation. You jumped out of the car and ran across the lot towards the store. A uniformed officer quickly approached you and tried to hold you back. “Ma ’me, you can’t be here. I am going to have to ask you to get back to your car.”
You quickly went through your pockets and pulled out you ID. “I am a social worker up at McCloud’s. My colleague is already here, and one of our kids is in the store. I need you to let me pass.”
The officer stared at you ID for a few seconds before looking back at you. He seemed a bit unsure of what to do, so you proceeded. “Look I know the kid, and I can help. I need to pass.”
The officer slowly nodded, and you ran past him before he had a chance to change his mind.
The space in front of the small cozy convenient store was swarming with cops, and you stopped and looked around, trying to locate Cas. You gulped when you saw the SWAT team gearing up. They weren’t really planning on going in guns blazing were they?
“Y/N?” You spun around at the sound of Cas voice and saw him rushing towards you.
“Fill me in.” you quickly commanded, and Cas pulled you to the side.
“There are three kids in there. 2 of them have guns, and from what I can gather, they are part of some local gang. One of them is already wanted by the police. I tried to get through to the SWAT officers earlier, but I can’t seem to make them understand that Ben is no treat. They see them all as armed and dangerous. Y/N, I do not for a second believe Ben knew what he was walking into. He may be easy to influence, but he would never point a gun at anybody.”
You nodded as you listened to Cas story while you kept looking around, trying to get a feel for who might be in charge. Your gaze landed on two tall burly guys without uniforms. The one with a beard was talking to the commanding SWAT officer while his partner’s eyes were resting on the front of the shop. You looked around and saw a few officers blocking your path to get to the SWAT car, and you knew you and Cas were already pushing your luck. There was no chance they would allow you to get even closer to the store, so you smiled knowingly up at Cas.
“I need a distraction.”
Cas followed your line of sight and immediately knew what you were thinking. He always did. He had been your teacher and mentor for a long time. A friendship and partnership had grown between the two of you, and now you worked pretty much all of your cases together. You trusted and admired him, and you knew he respected and believed in you. You were a good team.
Cas winked at you and walked straight up to the uniformed cops and started yelling at them, demanding their full attention. You smiled and watched him for a few seconds before you rushed across the street unnoticed by the officers who were busy trying to keep Cas calm.
You approached the detective that wasn’t currently in deep discussion with the SWAT officer. “Excuse me? Can I talk to you for a moment detective?”
The man turned around, and for a few seconds, you forgot what you were saying and even where you were. He had seemed like a good looking man when you had watched him from a distance, but up close he was almost god like. He stood tall, towering over you on strong, thick bowed legs and with muscles that were evident even through the three layers of clothing he was wearing. His eyes were green. Like, forest green. He had a strong jawline and full lips that almost made you wanna lick them.
His deep growl brought you back to reality. “You shouldn’t be back here lady.”
You shook yourself loose when he tried to grab your arm and lead you back across the street. “I am a social worker. I know one of the boys in there. If you would just listen to me for a second before you send a freaking army in there.”
The man’s eyes opened wide, and you actually thought you saw a glimmer of admiration in them before he spoke again. “I wasn’t really planning too, but if you think you can give me some insight into what I am walking into before I walk into it, I would appreciate it.”
The detective rested his hand on your back and led you back towards a big shining black car. “Talk to me?” He offered as he opened the car door and pulled out a vest.
It took all of your will power not to drool when he started stripping down to his t-shirt in front of you. You took a deep breath and started focusing on Ben rather than the gorgeous man in front of you.
“Ben Braeden lives up at McCloud’s. It is a group home for troubled kids and teens. Many of them have abusive backgrounds,” you started explaining making Dean chuckle.
“I know what it is. So how did… Ben you said?” You nodded, and the detective continued. “How did Ben end up in there?”
The detective started putting on his vest, and you began explaining Ben’s story to him. You told him how he had been in an unstable home with lots of men coming and going for the first 11 years of his life. How he was easy to influence, especially by older boys and men. He had never had a dad, so he needed someone to look up too. He just have a tendency to pick the wrong people.
“Are you ready Winchester?” The other civilian dressed detective walked up behind you as you finished your story and nodded towards you. “Who is this?”
“She’s a social worker up at The Clouds,” the green eyed detective explained. “One of the kids in there is from the group home.”
The green-eyed detective returned his attention to you. “I’m sorry. I didn’t catch your name sweetheart?”
You cringed at his choice of words. You felt as if he was talking down to you, but you decided to let it go. “Y/N Harvelle.”
“Okay Miss Harvelle. I am Detective Dean Winchester, and this is my partner, Benny Lafitte. Shots were fired in there recently, and apparently one of the boys was hurt.” You sucked in a breath, which didn’t go unnoticed by the man in front of you. He put his hands on your arms and gave you a reassuring squeeze. “I am going in there on my own to try and talk them down. I am not letting anyone else get hurt okay?”
You looked into his eyes. You saw and determination, but also a kindness there, that made you believe him. You didn’t have the best experience with cops in these kinds of situations, but there was something different about Dean. You nodded, making him smile as he returned it. “Alright. You are staying out here with Detective Lafitte.”
Dean’s PoV
Dean turned his attention to Benny. “Okay let’s do this.” Benny proceed to make sure his partner had his phone on and that they both knew the code word in case the SWAT team needed to come in.
“I got it man. This isn’t my first rodeo.” Dean winked at his partner before disarming and laying down his gun on the hood of his car. “Hold on to that for me will you?”
“Dean that’s a bad idea.” Benny argued, but Dean just shook his head.
“There are 3 kids in there and one scared store owner. I am not giving them more fire power. I am getting everyone out safely.”
Benny nodded, knowing after partnering with Dean for well over 2 years, that arguing in this moment would be pointless. “Be careful brother.”
“Always am.” Dean smiled before turning around and putting his hand over his head as he headed towards the store and the hostage situation.
As Dean slowly approached the store, he thought about the young woman who had approached him. The way she had spoken to him had impressed him. She had balls, and she was fucking beautiful. He remember the way the sun had made her Y/H/C shine and the sparkle in her Y/E/C eyes as she had spoken passionately for the kid he was about to walk in and arrest. That part weren’t going to earn him any popularity points that was for sure, but he had no choice.
Dean pushed Y/N out of his thoughts as he reached the door. He carefully knocked twice before pushing it open. He held up his hands defensively, showing the kid that stormed forward holding two guns that he was unarmed. “We asked for a doctor. You aren’t a doctor. You are a freaking cop.” The kid yelled at him, waving one of the guns at him.
Dean stayed calm as his eyes quickly searched the room. The store owner was tied up in the corner, seemingly unharmed aside from a bump on his head. In the middle of the room a blond boy was lying on the floor in a pool of blood and a dark haired one was kneeling down next to him, pressing a shirt against his friend’s stomach.
Dean quickly returned his attention to the slightly older kid holding the guns. “Yes, I am a cop, but right now I am that boy’s best chance of making it out of here alive. You gotta let me take a look at him.”
“NO.” The kid pointed the gun at Dean’s head. “You are leaving. I don’t want any damn cops in here.”
Dean sent the boys a trying smile. “Okay… I can do that, but if I leave there will be a hell of a lot more cops busting down those doors in a few minute. I am just here to help… Let me help?”
The boy with the guns hesitated for a few seconds, and the dark haired boy spoke from behind him. “Asher needs help, Mike. I don’t know what to do. Maybe he does.” Dean quickly committed the names to memory and gathered the dark haired boy trying to help his friend had to be Ben.
“Alright.” Mike waved Dean forward with one of the guns, “but don’t try anything, or I will shoot.” Dean nodded and kept his hands up as he moved across the room. “I’m only here to help man.”
Dean knelt down beside the wounded boy. He was in a lot of pain, and he looked like he was scared shitless. So Dean sent him a reassuring smile. “I am going to have a look at you okay? Just stay still. I’m Dean.”
“Asher…” the boy coughed, and Dean smiled. “Nice to meet you Asher.” Dean slowly removed the shirt from the boy’s abdomen. He was bleeding badly. Dean looked up at the boy next to him. “I am going to need your help. Ben right?”
Ben nodded, confused. “How do you know what my name is?” Dean smiled at him as he tried to earn his trust. “You got a social worker that cares a lot about you outside. Y/N Harvelle.” Ben’s eyes opened wide, and an ashamed look spread across his face. “She is here?”
“Yes right outside. Waiting for you. But right now I need to check Asher for an exit wound. Can you help me do that?”
Ben nodded. With a little coaching from Dean, the two of them managed to flip Asher onto his side, and Dean silently swore when he didn’t find anything. “Okay Ben.” Dean helped a screaming Asher back onto his back. “We need to find some alcohol, a tweezer, tape, and some bandages.” Ben nodded, but when Dean tried to get up Mike quickly pointed his gun at him again.
“You’re not going anywhere,” he screamed.
Dean felt his patience slowly starting to slip, but he calmly addressed the kid above him. “Your friend is going to die if I don’t get the bullet out of him and get him to a hospital. Do you really want that on your conscience?”
“You can try and help him,” Mike seemed, unaffected by Dean’s words. “Ben will go get the stuff you need, and Asher ain’t leaving until we all are.”
“You do realize he could die right?” Dean growled at the kid in front of him as Ben disappeared back into the store, but Mike just smiled. “It beats jail. I’m 20, and Asher is 18.”
A loud bang sounded from the other end of the store as a flustered Ben probably dropped something. The sound distracted Mike for just long enough for Dean to react. He jumped, overpowering the kid. He knocked one of the guns from his hands and grabbed the other before cuffing him to one of the shelves.
A smiled slid across Mike's face just as Dean backed of him.
“Shoot him Ben.”
Dean quickly turned to face Ben, who were pointing the before discarded gun at his chest. “You don’t want to do that Ben.” Dean tried, but Mike shouted again.
“Shoot him before he shoots you.”
Dean saw the terror in Ben’s face and he slowly bent down, laying the gun he was holding on the ground. “No one else is getting shot here today. We are just going to talk okay?” Dean didn’t take his eyes off Ben as he stood back up. He smiled when the kid slowly nodded.
“That’s it. Ben, your friend is going to die if we don’t get him help soon. We need to get him to a hospital. You don’t want him to die do you?” Dean asked and took a step forward as he reached out for the gun. Ben’s hands were shaking, but he let Dean take it.
“That’s it. It’s over.” Dean spoke calmly. “I am just going to call my partner, and we are getting your friend some help.”
Dean let the clip from the gun fall to the ground before finishing his cell out of his pocket. “Did you hear that? All clear. Get a medic in here.” Dean ordered just as Mike whistled beside him. “You are an idiot Braeden. You are going to jail.”
Dean looked up to see the panic on Ben’s face, and he didn’t have time to react before Ben’s fist connected with his jaw. Ben ran for the back door, but Dean wasn’t far behind him. He slammed the boy against the wall, making him cry out as he cuffed his hands behind his back.
“Sorry kiddo,” Dean mumbled as he pulled him back towards the store just as Benny and a few other cops busted through the door. “What took you so long?” Dean sent his partner a reassuring smile as he saw him breathe a sigh of relief at the sight of Dean still standing.
Your PoV
You had been waiting anxiously outside the store preparing yourself for the worst, but now you were furious. Detective Winchester had dragged a crying and scared Ben out of the store, and he wouldn’t even let you talk to him before shoving him into the back of a cop car.
“I told you. He didn’t know what he was walking into. You need to release him into our custody.” you spat at him, following him back towards his car.
“And I told you, Miss Harvelle, that is not within my power. Besides, the kid pulled a gun on me, and he punched me trying to escape.”
You stared daggers at him, but he just stared right back. You realized he wasn’t going to give, so you spun around on your heels, mumbling your thoughts out loud, and within seconds, Dean was in front of you, looking pissed. “What was that?.”
He was menacing. He towered over you. His green eyes had become 3 shades darker from his anger, but you didn’t care. You were furious. “I said you probably deserved it, and that he should have hit you harder.” you spat at him, and you watched his eyes narrow before he shook his head.
“Tell McCloud he will hear from us, and you should probably find a new job. That bleeding heart of yours is going to get you killed or burned out.” The venom in his words made you freeze for a second before you twirled around and yelled after him as he was walking away
“Don’t you dare tell me how to do my job.”
“Then don’t tell me how to do mine.” the man yelled over his shoulder without giving you as much as a second look.

Mr. Novak

Meg loves her job. No, really. Being someone’s personal assistant is like adulting on behalf of another adult. Glorified babysitting with a nice salary and benefits.
Thankfully, Castiel Novak does not need a nanny. What he does need is a trilingual and well-organized schedule-planner, email aficionado, and memo-taker. Especially when the memos are kind of half-mumbled into his first cup of coffee or while staring at a messy spreadsheet. Being the CEO of the biggest international financial enterprise on the market right now means you get to have messy handwriting.
And bedhead, Meg muses every time she sees her boss and wonders about gifting him a hairbrush. Everything else about him is perfect; neatly pressed slacks and shirts, ties always done up impeccably, piercing blue eyes and just the right amount of dark scruff on his sharp jaw.
Okay, yes, he’s hot. Meg’s got eyes. Even though she normally goes for female Alphas only, she’s well aware that her boss ‘call me Mr. Novak’ is extremely good-looking and desirable, if you’re into the super professional Alpha. The traditional type.
The poor guy is constantly fending off advances from the unmated (and sometimes the mated) around the office. He’s lucky to be very happily married to an Omega named Dean. Meg only knows this because of her position as his assistant, writing in notes about appointments for Dean, scheduling time for Castiel to pick something up for Dean, plus the simple photograph from their wedding that rests on his desk. Castiel is extremely professional about it—thankfully. Meg has no interest in watching the hormones fly in her workplace.
Then, one day, Meg gets a page from the doorman that a D. Novak is here. It doesn’t take a genius to make the connection.
She recognizes the green-eyed sandy-haired Omega at once from the photograph. He’s slim with wide eyes and pink lips—every inch the perfect Omega—smiling at her as he steps off the elevator.
“Hi,” Dean greets her politely. “I’m here to see Castiel, just for a minute. He left his lunch at home this morning.”
“All right.” Meg glances at Castiel’s afternoon schedule, which has a two-hour empty window to include his lunch plus a little free time before a conference call with a partner branch in Montreal. “Let me just—”
Suddenly, the door of Castiel’s office bangs open. He stands in the doorway, blue eyes a little wild and nostrils flaring. “Dean?”
“Hi, Alpha.” Dean lowers his chin and flutters his eyelashes prettily at Castiel. Oh, Meg thinks, I see how it is for these two. She just grins and clears her throat.
“Your mate’s here, boss, and you don’t have anything on the calendar until that phone call at three. Enjoy your lunch.”
“Yes, thank you, Meg,” Castiel answers her distractedly. “Ah, Dean, won’t you—?”
Dean nods and moves toward Castiel, perfectly submissive and sweet. Meg watches a big, genuine smile steal over Castiel’s features, the line of his shoulders relaxing slightly as he reaches out to place one hand on the back of his mate’s neck. The door swings shut but the section directly behind Meg’s desk is clear glass, so Meg unabashedly watches them make their way first toward the little sitting area in Castiel’s office but then change course for Castiel’s desk.
The first thing Castiel does is clear a space on the flat surface where he had been working. Next, he takes the lunch box from Dean’s hands and places it there carefully. Then he sits and holds his arms open, palms facing up, smiling when Dean climbs onto his lap.
Castiel is soft around his mate in a way that Meg has never seen. She’s watched Castiel tear into people like Zachariah Sandover, out-do a powerhouse like Abaddon Knight in negotiations and come out unscathed. But with Dean in the room, this Castiel is a marshmallow in an Armani suit.

Secret Lives (Part 1)
Words: 1.4k
Summary: You, a hunter, meet Castiel as Steve and quickly become friends.
A/N:This part is more of a prologue. The rest of the series will focus on what happens in relationships with too many secrets. Part 2 will be posted in a day or so. The tag list is at the end, let me know if you want to be added.
—————
“Shit shit shit!” you panted as you ran through the dark alleyway. You had taken on too much with this hunt. It should have been a simple hack-n-slash vamp kill, but they caught you off guard. You were lucky to escape, but you were now unarmed, bleeding, and they were bound to find you again if you didn’t figure something out, quickly.
You found door, propped open with a brick. “Jackpot!” You slipped in and closed the door behind you as quietly as possible.
Looking around for possible weapons, you found yourself in the back room of a convenience store. It wasn’t likely that you’d find a decent weapon here, but it was a place to hide until the store opened in the morning.
You shuffled around in the dark, looking for a flashlight, when you tripped over something on the floor. Something that grunted loudly as you kicked it. “Shit!” you whispered loudly.
Suddenly, there was a tall figure standing in front of you. “Wha… who are you? What are you doing here?” He sounded more guilty than angry.
“Hey, I’m sorry. I’m not robbing the store. I just needed a place to hide out for a moment.” You figured the truth, well as much truth as you could give to a regular person, would be better than a lie.
“You’re in trouble.” It was more of a statement of recognition than a question. He turned on a small camping lamp to bring a dim glow to the room. You could now see the, very attractive, man standing before you. He looked you over and noticed the blood covering your shirt. “Are you hurt?”
Most of the blood on your shirt was not your own, but you had been wounded during the fight. “It’s not that bad. You don’t have a first aid kit do you?”
He nodded and showed you to the bathroom to help clean and dress your wounds. “Can I ask what happened?”
You winced at the sting of the alcohol he dabbed on your wrist while trying to figure a good way to explain what happened. “It’s a complicated story. Um… thanks for helping me. Most people would have been freaked out and probably called the cops. So thanks for that. I’m Y/N, by the way.”
He understood how you felt, not wanting to share too much of his own complicated story to a stranger. “Steve. My name is Steve. I’m happy to help.” He really was happy to be useful. After losing his grace, he found it was hard to feel like he could help anyone anymore. He thought about how he could have just placed his hand on you to heal your wounds and could have easily taken out whatever was chasing you. He sighed at the thought that he could at least show some kindness and make you feel more comfortable.
“Nice to meet you Steve. So, is it cool if I hide out here until morning? I don’t want to get you in trouble here, but I’m really in a bind.” You hated asking for help, it felt like it was almost against hunter code. But somehow Steve seemed different, more understanding to your situation.
You both made your way back into the storage room. “I have to open the store in 4 hours. My boss won’t be here until 11am, so you can stay here until then. You look like you could use some rest; you should try and sleep. I only have the one sleeping bag, but you are welcome to use it.” He smiled as he gestured to his little makeshift bed.
You immediately felt pity for him. He was living in the back room of the convenience store he worked at. All he owned probably fit into a backpack and here he was offering his only place to sleep, to you. “I can’t, Steve. I’m ok. I’ve slept on concrete before. You keep your bed. I really owe you one, here. I promise I will return the favor.” You laid on the cool floor next to him as he crawled back into his sleeping bag. You both fell asleep rather quickly now that the adrenaline from earlier had worn off.
————
You woke up suddenly when you felt a hand lightly shake your shoulder. “Y/N, you should wake up and eat something. Would you like some coffee?” You looked up to see Steve crouched next to you and his sleeping bag was covering you like a blanket.
Standing up and stretching, you yawned out “You must be an angel! I’d love some coffee, thank you.”
His eyes went wide with panic for a moment before he smiled and laughed awkwardly. “I… I’m just Steve.”
In the light of the day, you could see his features much more clearly and damn, if you weren’t impressed. “Ok, Steve. Thanks for the coffee. I should be getting out of your hair before your boss gets here. I’m going to be sticking around in town at the long-stay motel by the highway for a week or so. We should grab a drink or something after your shift.”
He smiled and nodded, “Yes. That sounds pleasant.”
————
You managed to take out the menacing vampires, now that you knew exactly who and where they were. Normally you would have moved on to the next case, but you thought that a little down time would do you well; especially if you could spend it with the sweet, hot, sales associate from the Gas-n-sip. You had exchanged numbers and hoped he might call you, but he seemed shy. You decided to take a little trip back to the store, going in the front door this time.
Approaching the store, you could see him through the window. He smiled and greeted you warmly when you pushed the door open. “Hello, Y/N. How are you feeling? Are you healing well?”
You blushed, you actually blushed. In your line of work, no one would have questioned your injuries unless you were practically dying. Cuts that didn’t even require stitching would have been easily forgotten. “Uh… yeah. Thanks, they’re healing just fine. How.. um… how are you?” You internally cringed at how you sounded like a awkward teenager.
He either didn’t notice your awkwardness or didn’t care. “I am well, thank you. I am finished with my shift in 10 minutes if you’d still like to grab that drink?”
You nodded, “Yeah. There’s a little café across the street, I’ll grab us a table and you can meet me over there.”
————
Talking with Steve felt so much easier than it was with others. You both had your odd quirks the neither one of you judged. You couldn’t tell why, but he put you at ease and you seemed to have a similar effect on him. He was very intelligent, well spoken, and funny in an odd way that you adored.
As the sun began to set, you both shifted at the realization that you should probably call it a night. You figured he would end up hanging out somewhere until he could sneak back into his workplace to sleep on the floor. You couldn’t stand the thought of it, now that you knew how sweet of a person he was. “Hey, this might sound odd; but my motel room has a second bed that you’re welcome to use. Sleeping in the floor every night can’t be good for you.”
He looked shocked and a little embarrassed. “I wouldn’t want to impose on you. The floor, with a sleeping bag, is at least better than being stuck outside.”
You weren’t going to take no for an answer on this. “It’s the least I can do, Steve. I can’t really get into it right now, but I really do owe you for helping me out the other night. Let me at least give you a warm bed to sleep in while I’m in town.”
“Thank you for your kindness, Y/N, it means a great deal to me.” He had a sad appreciation in his tone. It appeared that he had not felt too much kindness in his life and you were going to change that.
