“I grew up confident about my queerness. Girls at school made fun of me for it but autism’s lack of regard for social norms combined with my constant sapphic-novel-reading had given me confidence and I remained unruffled. I couldn’t imagine being anything other than bisexual and never thought of it as weird. It took repeated messages, over and over and over again, to instil a suitable amount of shame in me.
From what I can tell, a lot of allistic people I know are primarily motivated by social approval so push any rogue queerness down into their subconscious or suppress their thoughts and only get comfortable with it later in life. For me, it’s been the reverse. I was made to get uncomfortable with it. A combination of my rigid thinking with no grey areas combined with society’s messages about sexuality made me more muddled than was necessary. My teen years would be the last time, for a long time, that I felt being bisexual was normal.”

Part graphic novel, part memoir, Wake is an imaginative tour-de-force that tells the story of women-led slave revolts and chronicles scholar Rebecca Hall’s efforts to uncover the truth about these women warriors who, until now, have been left out of the historical record.

I’ve never heard someone sum up my experience so well, Strong Female Character by Fern Brady is genuinely the best written memoir I’ve ever read, definitely recommend if you’re an autistic girl/woman.

this week feels like it’s hanging in the ether, i stg. i feel so behind in my courses & i’m looking forward to taking this weekend to work on final projects.
i took a look at my course flow guide today & i feel … so behind where i want to be. i’ve been in this program full time for about a year now & it’s so much more work than i thought. i love it, don’t get me wrong — i’m so proud to be a ~woman in STEM~ — but for someone with chronic illness & mental health issues who has a background in english, this career switch is … huge. the learning curve is steep.
but, i can do this. 💪🏼🖤🦴
✦ Microbiology

Green Room – WIP Intro
Tumblr media
hiii cuties!
have you ever been overcome by an irresistible urge to write a memoir at the age of twenty, or are you normal? i'm definitely not, so here's a new project (again)
green room is an experimental memoir that delves into my teenage years as a writer. i started writing seriously at the age of thirteen and self-published my first book at fourteen, which is something that haunts me to date. but here's the thing – i feel like i've learned a lot in the last six to seven years and wanted to explore it with another writing project.
i don't really know what this book is going to be yet. i'm going to start drafting during nanowrimo as a side project and hopefully finish it by the end of the year, but i'm not in a rush. i want to enjoy the process of writing this so i might take my sweet time.
now because this is an intro post, let's get to some specifics.
disclaimer: this is my original work. plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated.
genre: creative/literary non-fiction
pov: first person retrospective
structure: a combination of chapters, vignettes, and poetry maybe
projected word count: 50k
concept: literary memoir on a writer's journey through teenage as they navigate genre, form, tense, character, story, plot, theme, atmosphere, and setting.
aesthetics/vibes: abandoned art galleries, mountaintops, beaches at midnight, falling asleep on the terrace, coffee mugs, word documents, cute stationery that never gets used, rejection e-mails, daydreaming, moon phases, still rivers, birds flying in groups, rain, academic validation, morally gray people, the colour green
THE ORIGIN STORY
i had always wanted to write something in retrospect of my teenage and document my growth, but didn't want to be so didactic in doing so. the memoir seemed like a serious piece of writing so i didn't really know if i was qualified enough to start. but if i've learned anything about writing in the last few years, it is that you can write whatever you feel like writing. so here i am with a new wip.
a little bit about the title – i struggled with this the most. but the novel i wrote during my late teens (dairy whiskey) was an entirely green book and i found myself finding thousands of green things every single day. my life had turned a shade of green. i was very inspired by the books bluets by maggie nelson and the white book by kan hang. i decided to make the colour green an important aspect of the book.
i don't know how this is going to turn out or if i'm going to do updates for this one, but who knows, i just might. until then, i hope you enjoy my other writing and shitposting. until next time, goodbye.
– ann.

"I didn't know what I was supposed to eat now that I was living independently so I decided to only eat bagels as they were simple and didn't overwhelm me plus I liked their shape. Trying to work out what was a normal meal was too much when I had absolutely no idea how to find out where my classes were, how to electronically submit essays--basically how to do anything that everyone else seemed able to do effortlessly. If you're allistic you likely take for granted that when you're not sure of something you'll ask someone for help. Autism is so insular and self-contained that for us, asking for help sometimes feels like going against our nature. The dropout rate for autistic students is ten times higher than for non-autistic students and it's thought that's because most students tend to help each other by 'crowd-sourcing' information from their peers."

something I've been thinking about lately. i do think it's incredibly telling that almost 80 percent of the conversations around 'gatekeeping' and 'posers' and shit end up just becoming vitriolic hatred of 'alt girls' like i hate shit spotify playlists and dollskill fake leather edge and tiktok recommendations as much as the next person but this is a very big attitude coming from a website full of people who spent their formative middle school years shopping at hot topic for multi-colored skinny jeans while listening to like. falling in reverse or 21p unironically (this is a self-own btw). first of all teenagers having shit taste isn't killing punk music. but also why is the object of your hatred always boil down to a woman faking it? as if it isn't the single oldest stereotype in heavy music? like am i insane for thinking this is an issue
