I'm a big fan of building commie blocks to ameliorate the US housing crisis -- and putting them in the public parks that were stolen from other communities to give colonisers some trees to look at -- but what policies should be enacted to get suburbanites into beautiful and efficient bedspace apartments with kitchens and washrooms shared by a floor?

As a good social democrat, I'm contractually obligated to prefer Red Vienna to your proper commie block. Short of a complete class revolution that completely upends the social hierarchy, a significant part of ensuring that social housing pulls off being "a living tapestry of a mixed community" is building it to middle-class standards (including aesthetic standards) so that people with the money to find alternatives don't all leave. Art Deco is a hell of a lot chic-er than the boring minimalist crap that luxury developers are getting away with these days.

Also, don't build them in parks: green space is not only important for environmental sustainability but also the health and mental health of working-class and poor communities who can't afford houses in the suburbs, and we should be encouraging in-fill development instead. (Build them on golf courses instead, because they are classist, invasive, artificial monocultures that do nothing for the environment.)

In terms of how to make suburbia more in synch with dense, sustainable social housing, there are a number of necessary changes:

Commuter rail: suburbs predate the car by a fair few decades, and originally sprung up along the routes of commuter rail lines. Well, it turns out that transit-oriented development and dense transit corridors go hand-in-hand: if you can build higher-density units near transit lines, people will use mass transit to commute, and if there are well-planned areas of higher density around major urban areas, the increased number of commuters can support more regular transit services.

Planning/zoning/ligitation revolution: as I mentioned in my student housing post, one of the major reasons why it's so hard to build affordable housing projects is that local NIMBY groups use every legal tool in the book to bury them. So there needs to be pretty comprehensive reforms of zoning regulations (banning single-family zoning, reducing set-backs and eliminating mandatory parking, getting rid of "unrelated persons" limitations, getting rid of building heights limits, etc.), standardization of the permitting and development approval process, streamlining of the public comment/hearing process and environmental review process for model projects, and extreme limits on litigation for model projects.

Financing reform: as I sort of imply in my Red Vienna section above, a big part of making social housing/public housing successful and avoiding replicating or increasing class and racial segregation is adhering to middle-class minimum standards. This has important knock-on implications:

you need to eliminate requirements for absolute lowest possible land costs (which restrict social housing to economically and socially isolated areas).

you need to raise allowable construction costs, so that you can achieve those aesthetic standards and avoid corner-cutting like smaller rooms and lower ceilings, single-thickness walls/floors/ceilings, no doors on cabinets or closets, cheap cladding and wiring and pipes and other building materials, low-quality insulation and HVAC, etc. Not only do middle-class folks notice this stuff and go elsewhere, but it's all penny-wise and pound-foolish, because cheap construction runs down faster which increases maintenance costs, and sometimes it just straight-up kills people.

you need to adequately finance maintenance, services, and amenities. This is crucial to keeping tenants with deeper pockets, but it's also another one of those things where penny-pinching is counter-productive in the long-run. The more you save on maintenance costs, the faster the buildings run down and the more expensive repairs you have to make. The more you save on services like superintendants and doormen, the more your tenants end up having to spend on handymen and the more you have to spend on police and repair costs. And so forth.

And there is a real potential here for all kinds of positive feedback loops: spending money on achieving higher standards of construction and operation means that you can hang onto and attract higher-income tenants, which means you can have sliding scale rents that cross-subsidize tenants and pay for higher construction and operating costs, and the poor and working class tenants who couldn't have paid for those higher costs and amenities on their own enjoy a "positive externality" for once.

You know, if anyone wants an office tour! 😄

Is it a proper office? No. One makes do when one lives in an apartment and only has so much space. (Especially when one is sharing space with a fellow nerd!) Because Eddie and I don't use a dining room, we converted the dining area into my office! So if you see peaks of the kitchen/living room/entrance, that's why! It's not much, but it's all my own! 💛

Eddie installed some hooks for where my mugs used to hang. I have better mug storage now, so hanging above the entrance I put this ornament I picked up while in New Orleans back in August 2022! Gay mermen? C'mon. I named them Henry and Sebastian btw.

This is my non-HP witchy section. Mostly astrology books. A few miscellaneous witchcraft books on the bottom shelf. And my crystal collection on top!

I mentioned "mug collection" right? I love them! 😍 Though it might be worth noting that I have other mugs in the kitchen cabinet. 👀 And a small holiday collection I bring out during the holidays. I don't have a problem, I swear.

Aaaand my cubes! My Sorting Hat. Some fandom and astrology themed candles (most from various Etsy shops.) Various HP figures. Cubes for storage (mostly notebooks and notecards and things.) I have quite the collection of tarot and oracle decks in one of the open cubes. A little chest full of decks, and a few more decks in specific deck boxes (cuz my chest is too full 🙈) I also have 2 bound fics, and a HP word search book (I looooove word searches!) Mostly the cube organizers are for various knick knacks and such.

All the HP foreign editions Eddie gifted me. Character wands (that aren't displayed) and the empty boxes for the wands I do have displayed.

And THIS is where the magic happens, baby! My desk. An absurd amount of colored pens. All the books I'm most likely to consult while writing (poetry, symbolism, mythology, philosophy, etc.) My Snarry art on the wall!!!!!! 😍😍 (I need more frames so I can hang MORE SNARRY ART.) (A gal always needs more Snarry art, y'know?)

Then between my desk and the HP shelf I have PILLOWS because I'm too restless to stay in one place and position for too long. I also have a lap desk tucked away so I pull that out and hop into my pillows to keep writing! (My lil bee is named Beatrice, btw.) (Queen Bea! 🥰🥰)

This space seriously brings me so much joy, and so much inspiration. To have a space dedicated to writing, and my fandom, and my BOYS. Being able to have Snarry out and proud and all around me???? 🥺🥺 I'm all in my feelings. (Seriously, though, need MORE.) And not just a representation of my OTP, but of other creators who inspire me! The bound books being writers and bookbinders. My embroidery by onbeinganangel!! And some of the artists I love! A great reminder of all the talent in fandom and how much love and passion there is out there!!!! And I have pieces of it HERE WITH ME???? I am blown away and very in love.

I am very grateful to my partner. It was his idea to split areas so I'd have this one for myself (he has his own space now, too, for Magic the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, Brandon Sanderson, etc.) (Oh and his monstrous dice collection.) But I was lamenting how I was running out of room on my one little wall for Snarry art. My desk used to be on the little wall where my witchy shelf is. And it was Eddie's idea to make the whole room mine. And he and I worked hard not only rearranging to have our own areas, but decluttering and reorganizing the whole apartment! This man found the time and energy to make my life happier even when super busy and stressed from work. So in its way, this space also represents his love and thoughtfulness and dedication for me. Which makes it all the better! (And really, he had to do all of the heavy lifting, I am tragically weak.)

Something you absolutely adore:

Four Little Crows off to Meet the Maker :: This is chapter 1 of my Antivan long-fic, Quinta de Talpa, and it sets up Zevran and Hamal's quest to oppose the Crows while also serving as a 'marriage proposal' fic. I think it's a punchy start to a really long project, and I adore it! It motivates me to continue. :)

The door to their room opened before he could knock, and Hamal looked at him, brow furrowed, eyes heavy with lack of sleep. In one quick sweep, he took in the blood-stained clothes. Zevran shook his head. He pushed his way in.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I may have… underestimated things.”

2. Something that was challenging to create:

For Suffering is Such a Part :: AO3 :: This is the first long-fic I finished, and it took me years to complete. I found it incredibly daunting to work on anything longer than 1k, but I was deeply attached to the story and couldn't get it out of my head; I dedicated myself to completing it for several months after picking up an old draft. It's set during the Nature of the Beast quest in Origins. I uh still think about it a lot o_ o;

“My! Aren’t you a poet!” Zevran exclaimed, laughing into his wrist. “Am I just a hunk of meat to you?” Grinning broadly at him now, Hamal settled down on one knee, amid beams of sunlight. “Vhenan, to me you are the spring thaw, and all that comes with it.” Zevran looked at him. He blushed to the tips of his ears. He would definitely have to think of sweet things to tell Hamal in revenge—but he was far more poetic in Antivan, and had been caught off guard, so for now he acquiesced. “The things you say,” he told him softly. “Fine, you win. I’m a spring thaw.”

3. Something that makes you laugh (or smile, if that fits more comfortably):

The Reading Stone :: AO3 :: I love writing silly banter, but I often worry it goes too corny. I fear making anything too tonally dissonant. With this one I just had fun with it, and wrote some ensemble goofiness in Orzammar. :)

“And as I said, there is no need,” Hamal retorts. “You all sound like Ashalle. I can get by just fine without glasses.”

“Not if we go by all those bruises you’ve collected, walking into corners,” Alistair tuts. “How do you manage in a fight?”

“An enemy is just a big shape. I simply hit it until it stops moving!”

“Maker…”

4. Something that surprised you (in how it turned out, how much other people liked it, etc.):

All That Matters is That You've Kept on Living :: AO3 :: This was a sweet short piece between Zevran and Isabela. But it felt unpolished and I almost didn't post it! The response was very positive, I was happily surprised. I still feel I can expand on it. Maybe one day. :)They deserve so much love, two of my favorite characters.

Yanking her legs back she tucks them beneath herself and tackles him with a hug, affectionate but very much exasperated.

“You talk about your husband too much, Zevran! No one will ever want to sleep with you!”

Zevran draws in a sharp breath, then he collapses into laughter.

5. Something you want other people to see:

Not a Homecoming, But Something Like It :: AO3 :: Another fic set in Antiva. This one comes very close to being part of QDT, but ultimately it is able to stand alone. Adelmar is mentioned in FSISAP, too, but only through flashbacks. She's an important part of my extended worldstate, as she helps Zevran heal past traumas, and vice versa (she was a prostitute at the brothel he was born in).

“I’m so glad you’re doing well. So tell me,” she scoots closer and looks at him eagerly, “What sort of life did you have, after you were adopted?”

“Adopted?”

By the kitchen counter, Hamal catches the subtle edge in Zevran’s tone. He pauses, holding the knife in his hand as a lull falls over the kitchen table, but he doesn’t know enough Antivan to guess what’s happened.

What’s happened is this: Zevran and Adelmar came from the same place, and know enough about that life to instantly understand that a lie has been told.

“Oh,” Adelmar breathes after a moment. “You… you weren’t adopted.”

Zevran lets out a laugh. It’s his ‘stalling’ laugh, and now Hamal is looking over, arms crossed, searching his face for clues.

“I was not adopted,” he says.

✨Sorry it too me forever to get to this ask but here we go! ✨

At first this old man will not talk to you. He will simply observe you. Yao stumbled upon your musical talents on TikTok one morning. He passively watched and didn’t interact, but it sparked his curiosity. After a month of just hovering he will start to like and actively follow your page. The video that got him was one where you were filming with tons of cute stuffed animals, kittens, bunnies, and puppies. The epitome of cuteness. Yao was now hooked onto the [insert nationality here] pop star that had international appeal.

Yao now sits in his kitchen nook every morning and evening to watch what's on your various social media pages. He will be content for hours commenting, liking, editing, etc content that is all based around you. This marks the beginning of his addiction to you. It will grow. Then on his breaks from arduous meetings negotiating trade and numerous other matters, Yao is in the lobby resting his aching head and watching something that is soothing to his mind. A few sprouts of interest have appeared. Simply hearing your voice over the loudspeaker at some department store or in the air from a distant radio puts him at ease. Your songs were catchy and super upbeat. How could it not put him in a better mood.

He starts dedicating more time in his day just to be able to catch up on all of your new updates. He wanted to see which concert tours he could go see, which fashion line of yours looked the cutest, and how he could get his hands on a rare perfume that was only available in Europe and Canada. (He’s already planning out how to approach Canada and how to get the rare perfume.) He has your music set to play all the time while he’s at home. The house to him gets warmer and feels like there is sunshine when he hears your music play.

The seedlings from before now have enough energy to become vegetative orchids that will eventually consume his heart entirely. The next stage is that Yao will take time to meticulously learn your choreography to your songs. He has an active stan account on Twitter, Weibo, Youku, IG, etc. Yao’s obsession is continuing to bud. He takes some time out of his schedule to attend some of your concerts. Seeing you live pushes him further in the highs that he feels. When he sees you he loves it. He loves you. His feelings will begin to have lovely orchid buds that are just about ready to burst open. Spreading the hyper fixation to the deepest depths of his soul. This stage means that his yandere tendencies will finally start to manifest.

Yao will start to send you flowers after all of you shows and they will have tiny microphones hidden within the middle of the stems. He needs to know what you like, dislike, if there is any competition that he needs to get rid of. Those kinds of things. He intended on using whatever he finds from these sneaky bouquets to craft a cute room for you to stay in until you feel comfortable enough sharing a bed with him. He will have some of his secret agents follow you around even internationally. He can’t allow anyone to hurt his precious darling. Eventually after continuing to consume more of your art, merch, and fashion projects you’ve taken on. Yao’s inflation is at an unhealthy level now since:

He has a shrine of you in a hidden room in his house. It’s immaculate like Forbidden City and it has some rare items he or some of his agents helped him collect. There was a T-shirt that you took off during a festival and tossed into the crowd. It also had other miscellaneous items that his agents were able to gather like a Hydro Flask you left behind accidentally.

Since he’s in the flowering stage that means he’s planning your kidnapping.

You’d been escorted back to your dressing room by your two guards. It was another great show despite you falling over in the beginning and one of your backup dancers broke their leg in the show stopping closer.

“Thanks Julian and Max. Let me take these hellish heels and corset off and I’ll be ready to go back to my hotel.” They nod and you head into the room. Once in you try to turn on the light with no luck. But a small flame of sorts lights up from the deeper part of the room. A small red candle that was lit beside him.

“Yao?” You say with surprise and anxiety in your voice. The darkness that had a multitude of hands waiting for the signal. They waited for the man that had toxic ripened orchids, to say the two magic words. The orchids had devoured his entire being.

“Hello, [Stage Name] we’ve met before. I’m quite a huge fan, my love. But, let me cut to the chase. Marry Me.”

And just like that the hands captured Y/N the [nationality] the idol and took her to be wed to her biggest stan.

Absolutely, I am here to help!

So, thankfully you already seem to be doing what I know is most important, which is REST. It's super, super important to do as little as physically possible for as long as your symptoms continue, and then for as long as work and life will allow you to after, preferably another 1-2 weeks. And by 'little as possible', I mean literally don't leave your bed and try to avoid physical or mental activities. The idea is that your body pretty much needs to be using all its resources on completely clearing all traces of covid to best avoid lingering, Long Covid symptoms. This is what people do to avoid/manage other post viral syndromes, so while it's currently not a guaranteed strategy, it's the best course of action we know already works. As far as living with other people, you're also doing the best course of action which is staying isolated in your room and avoiding shared spaces as much as possible. Wear a well-fitted mask when you have to leave for the bathroom or the kitchen etc, and open windows all throughout the house often until you recover. Keep your window in your room especially open often if you have one, otherwise keeping fans on is good too (as much as you can stand anyway I'm sure you have a fever and chills going!!). As an extra precaution, your roommates can also mask up and lysol spray + wipe the fuck out of the rooms you were in after you leave them and open windows. Covid lingers in the air for awhile, about 3 hours, so that's why it's really important to clean the air and keep it circulating to keep anybody from breathing it, including you when you recover! If you or your roommates have the cash, one of them can run out and get a HEPA filter for your room cause that'll help significantly, but if not the windows should still definitely help. I've also heard of people putting towels under their sick room doors, but I don't have any confirmed science to back that up. It works for weed and other smoke I guess 😆 Also, if you don't know, the WHO still recommends isolating for 10 days and then 3 days after symptoms cease, so consider testing within that time frame to make sure you're still not testing positive. Other than that, unfortunately the best we have is still just managing symptoms at home the best you can, and make sure you go in if at any time you start experiencing worsening symptoms. I hope it's been mostly mild for you and you recover as smoothly as possible!!!! If you have any other specific questions, I can do my best to find answers for you. Take care! <3 P.S. wow ok thank you this was insanely helpful! luckily, my covid has been fairly mild and the worst of it was days 2 and 3, rn all i seem to be dealing with is congestion, night cough, and some headaches here and there. i live w my partner and mother in law and based on what you're saying, we've been doing fantastic with keeping it contained to just my room bc we lysol/wipe/mask up around each other and i have my window wide open w the fan. i have some of those 3M n95's that look kinda like muzzles and they've been working (what i can assume to be) very well :)

the info about resting past the first negative tests is super helpful for me specifically to hear though bc i work an outside phys labor job AND i'm an athlete/i do martial arts so naturally i've been itching to get back to work and the gym asap. but i will definitely try and give it some time, luckily i put my two weeks in at my old workplace so this friday would have been my last day anyways lol but i have an interview for another one coming up that i think i'll have to postpone bc who knows when i will test negative at this point.

other than that, i guess i'll just keep doing what i've been doing! thank you, again, i can't really fully put to words how reassuring it feels to hear some advice that isn't just "yeah you could try this but it's speculative at best" :')

HOME: a safe space

Everyone understands the critical role of home as more than just a physical structure in today's quick-paced and always changing environment. Home is a sanctuary, a safe space, meaningful relationship and even a place where there’s diversity. A term that evokes up so many different feelings, meanings and is much more than just a place to live.

The representative artwork represents a lot in my opinion and is a perfect descriptive piece of work. This piece shows the importance of surrounding yourself with people with who you can share your highs and lows and who have the same values as you. “The Last Supper” by Leornardo da Vinci is a meaningful piece of work which represents the final meal that Jesus had with his disciples. The home is represented in this artwork with the relationship that Jesus shares with his disciples. This last moment is extremely important for Jesus, and it really represents the importance of surrounding yourself who shares the same beliefs than you. This is for me the definition of home.

The architectectural interiors represent the physical structure of the word home. The first piece of image is my living room, which is the central room in my house back in Canada. A home is a place where you can share your best and worst moments in and feel yourself. It’s a place in which you are not judged, you are not loved and blessed. It’s the room in which me and my family gets together, talk, watch movies, etc. The second image is the Suncoast Credit Union Arena at Florida SouthWestern State College. I moved to Florida last August to pursue my education but also follow my biggest dream, to play college softball. I can now consider that this place feels like home. I’ve created friendship and memories that I will be forever grateful for. Every time I step in the Suncoast Arena, I feel like I’m at home. I can be myself, express my thoughts and emotions.

Photography is a potent medium that, in the world of art and self-expression, communicates emotions, tales, and the essence of life itself while across linguistic boundaries. With the photographer’s eye assignment, I was able to show my freshman’s experience at FSW in a couple of pictures. I’ve created friendship, discover a new country and its culture, met new people, followed one of my biggest dreams, in a lap of one year. Home is not only a physical structure in which you live, but’s it’s also people who you meet and with who you share different parts of your life. This part of my life is called “College, far away from home”. In the past year, I learned how to live on my own and I’m so grateful for all the people that made Florida a place that I call now home.

One of the songs I chose is called “Yellow” by Coldplay and its main them is on not giving up on someone. One of my values in life, is family. They have always been there for me, and this song reminds me immediately of them. We have not only been listening to that song for years, but my parents love them. I’ve also been in a tough relationship in the past, where I felt like it was a one-sided love relationship. Every time I hear that song I feel like I’m at home with my parents and they are listening to Coldplay in the kitchen. It just feels so homie.

All the posts I’ve added to my blog have a meaning and are linked to the word home. Whether it’s related to the physical structure or to relationships created or even a safe space, the different posts are all connected to the feeling you have when you are at home. I have never felt so much at home in the past year. Whether it is in Canada or in Florida, I know that I am safe and surrounded with people that care for me as much as I care for them.

sage: what 'medium' of art (poetry, music, fiction, painting, statues etc.) is the most touching to you? why do you think that is?

I think for me the answer for me would have to be music! There is certainly great emotion that I get from works of writing like fiction and poetry, and film (which I do consider to be art) also means a lot to me and makes me emo 90% of the time, but music!!! Music!! Music is the heart of hearts and the soul of souls, no matter what you feel there is always a song that can touch you in some way. It's transcendent of language and time and I just think that's so wholly beautiful. Music has always been a big part of my life, like maybe not outwardly but very, very internally. I just love how music is everywhere. It's in the lines of a book and the spoken words of my favourite characters. How can that not be touching?

aloe vera: what's something (mundane) you really want to experience in this life?

Okay, I could go on for hours about how much I love the softness of mundane living and how my bones yearn for a gentle life, but instead, I will just answer the prompt, haha. One thing I'd love to experience would be this: waking up to a gentle breeze coming through the window of my own room in my own bed. A quiet house where I can walk into the kitchen and share breakfast with my partner. I’ll drink coffee, they'll have whatever, and we don't talk. Maybe hold hands. Just enjoy the morning sun together until we're ready. Domesticity. I want to experience a kind, loving morning of domesticity. That might sound so super basic and normal for some people, but that's the joy of mundanity, is it not?

I genuinely miss living alone. For 2 1/2 months last year it was just me and the hedgehog and for the first time in my life, I actually felt like I had my own place in the universe.

But because it was more economically logical and because they were essentially homeless with an infant at the time, my current roommate moved in and it just……

It takes a lot of effort to not be really really judgey some days. And not in a “this harmless little trait annoys me way” but a “hey so you keep making these claims about wanting better and to be better and not become your parents or fuck up your kid but you refuse to change or even admit the patterns of behavior that are actively detrimental to that.”

I can’t stand “messiness” in shared spaces, it genuinely impacts my mood. Things have to have homes and they need to be in those homes when not in use. Baby toys go in the bin or in his play area, hedgehog supplies go in the cabinets under her home, dirty cups do not go on the bookshelves in the living room, etc. I have trauma surrounding literally being kept up until 2 in the morning on a school night frantically cleaning over and over as my step-father screams at us for it “not being good enough”. I also take issue with empty apologies and promises. If you don’t mean it, then don’t bother saying it. If you’re not actually sorry or don’t actually plan on trying to change the problem behavior then your words are meaningless.

We’ve had multiple conversations around the clutter of the living room and kitchen and how it is, most heavily, theirs. The biggest one was in August after they had left for a family trip for a week. While they and the child were gone I deep cleaned the apartment in an entire day. Everything, the cabinets the floors, I rearranged furniture in the main room, bought new storage for art supplies, all of it. It took me some 8 odd hours to do it, partially because I can really only do so much like that before my body demands to sit down or I can’t breathe. For a week the entire apartment baring their room was clean and I was fully comfortable. It took all of two days after their return to destroy it. And they admitted that they noticed how, the more clutter and mess they dragged into the living area the more my mood dropped until I nearly hit a depressive episode because there was so much mess and I just felt hopeless trying to deal with it.

I full on told them afterward, I cannot live in a place like this. I cannot live with clutter and crap and constant stuff we have no place for being dragged in. We have to maintain the house, especially the shared spaces.

I wrote out a shared chore list of everything to be done daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly/as necessary. They looked at it once. I continued to do 80-90% of the work.

And I can’t bring myself to kick them out because they have no savings, they’re constantly sending and complaining to me about being completely broke, and their parents house is a literal health code violation due in part to 20+ years of untreated hoarding. I refuse to be the reason a 1y/o would have to live in that/spend any more time there than he already does.

But I’m also sick and tired of hearing constant complaints of not wanting to be their mother/inherit their mother’s hoarding habits and general poor living conditions/inability to maintain a clean and livable space while also watching them just open another trash bag and set it on the floor next to the bin instead of taking the full trash outside and bring 2-5 bags of stuff we do not need and do not have space for home every week.

And part of why it bothers me is because I get almost physically ill at the thought of someone coming in and seeing all of the crap and clutter and dishes and food left laying around from them when I don’t have the energy to work all day and then come home and pick up after another fully grown adult. And I’ve told them that, it’s my biggest “please for the love of whatever you believe in do not because it reflects not just on how they view you but how they view me”. But I’ve still come home to find the communal spaces a wreck and a complete stranger on my couch. They once told me “people live here, it’s never going to be showroom spotless” when I said “hey, it does bother me that despite knowing 1) you’d invited someone over and 2) people seeing the apartment like this makes me viscerally ill and upset, you still didn’t bother to pick anything up or even try to clean the area.”

So like the alley on both sides are always full of clothes and blankets and books and projects and abandoned school notes and other things but I can’t move the room because changing the layout of my space is VERY stressful for me. I know where everything is in my room exactly but I can never remember where anything is anywhere else. (Rip phone, I’m writing on my iPad rn)

But somehow it seems pretty much of an issue on tumblr today so anyway let's finish to break it down now 😂 (beware that I'm not a Parisian architect so it's a lot of deductions from what I know about Parisian apartments in general and personal researches, I could be wrong in my interpretation & analysis of it)

So as you're saying, there are three floors including the attic, plus the ground floor (side-note btw but sorry it may seem confusing but I'm talking using UK English, meaning what Americans call "first floor" is "ground floor" in UK Eng, so the "second floor" for Americans is the "first floor" here, etc. It's easier for me cause that's what we do in my language too; I'll also use both the 'flat' and 'apartment' appellations cause I'm lazy and never pay attention to which one I use rip, language coherence has left the window, my old English teacher wouldn't be proud)

Also for your information, this is what the bakery they got their inspiration from looks like (I took a trip there with my friend google map and tried to screenshot the whole building - it's bigger than the Dupain Cheng's house since it has more floors and I doubt the bakers live in it all, but I wanted to check how far their inspiration went but it seemed it stopped at the shopfront + the global looking-aspect of the building; I also checked the roof and no balcony there). But yeah the building looks very typical-Parisian block of flats.

It's pretty common in Paris to have one or more flats per floor, so you'd have a common staircase in a building and each floor can be split into two, three flats with doors and doorbells and stuffs.

What always struck me was the staircase of the Dupain Cheng's house to access the different floors: they look exactly like a common and shared staircase between a few residents of a flats block. We see a blue staircase with doors on each floor having doorbells and such. There's even a little stickers above the doorbell to indicate the name of the flat's resident.

My best guess here is that they own what used to be a block of flats with different residents, and that they reorganised it into one same house (the Dupain-Cheng, or the people who owned the bakery before them, or even before, etc. The point is that at some point, these apartments have been converted into one and the same so the owner of the bakery owns it all).

Know that flats in Paris can have very different size, even in one same block of flats! Some can be 12m^2, some 30m^2, etc.

In Troublemaker, Marinette tells Jagged that the restroom is upstairs. Which considering the arrangement of their house is super vague and not informative at all. We also know that there are two doors with bells on the 1st floor (2nd for Americans). So my guess is that on the first floor, one flat was converted into the parents' room, and the other into the bathroom (for which you'd need to use a different door than the parents' room one, and as I said above, that could be smaller than the room for the parents' bedroom).

(Not the best screenshot but yeah we see 2 doors from what were 2 different flats in this, and that could easily be for the parents's bedroom and for the bathroom, one or the other. It's also possible that the parents have their private bathroom too).

We know they come inside the house from the bakery, though there could be a side-door somewhere because when the bakery is closed it'd make sense to use another entrance, and if they want to go to the living-room & kitchen (which we know is on the 2nd floor - 3rd for you Americans - thanks to episodes like Weredad and such), they will ring that bell (as we saw happening in Stormy Weather, Kung Food, Weredad, etc.).

So you have both the kitchen and the living room in one place which is something that is done more and more nowadays as an "open space" type of thing. Their table to eat - they can't have a big feast there clearly aha. The main entrance door is behind the couch, from the point of view we're in on the 2nd picture. And we can see the stairs leading to Marinette's bedroom, which do look like they've been added afterwards as a reorganisation.

Marinette's room clearly is in the attic arranged into a room, and her balcony probably wasn't one but I think some work happened so it could be converted into one - just the fact that she has to go out through a window indicates that imo. Especially since said window is pretty high up and you can only access it thanks to the fact that they made a mezzanine for Marinette's bed. Plus I've looked it up and you don't find these kind of balconies much in Paris - there are roof balconies but they rarely look like Marinette's.

(notice that she also has a sink, which give an access point to water which isn't common in a bedroom - so it probably used to be something else before that required an access for water, like a bathroom for instance).

So yeah the fact that it's above the attic next to the chimneys + the uneasy access is what's making me wondering if it wasn't added afterwards, and that before the roof was kinda looking like the one next to it separated by the chimneys!

    This week has been the worst for you, you were triggered constantly and your boyfriend Hannibal was too busy to help you, or maybe he ignored you? These thoughts and the things you’ve been through made you emotional. Now you were on the floor of your shared living room, you had a coloring book where you kept hidden in the back of your shared closet in the bedroom –Hannibal definitely knew that but didn’t say anything- everyone had their own ways to cope with pain and traumas and your way was to do comforting things like you did when you were a child. If the weather was good you would go to a playground and swing, pick flowers for Hannibal to put them in the kitchen counter, playing video games, etc. Pulling your coloring book out of its hiding place meant that you had enough and the daily life was too much for you.

Hannibal came home late because when he left his office Jack Crawford called and he was needed in a crime scene, after spending and hour there he decided to go home and rest. He was a busy man but he always had time for you, throughout the day you usually call him on his breaks and have a small chat, or bring him lunch, he takes you to cinema, art exhibitions, theatre, etc. He knew that he would find you in a stressed position, he walked in and threw his keys to the bowl, took off his long coat and washed his hands before he walked to the living room.

You were on the ground coloring when he saw you, ‘’Hello love.’’ He said and approached to you, watching you sway your legs and humming a tune. ‘’Hello!’’ you said excited, you were in love with this man. ‘’What are you coloring?’’ he kindly asked and sat next to you and looked at the paper, ‘’It’s a butterfly.’’ You said focusing on the paper, eye brows knitted. ‘’It is a beautiful butterfly, and good choice of colors Y/N. I’m proud of you.’’ You looked up to meet his maroon eyes to see if he was lying or not. He looked achingly loving and vulnerable all at once. You jumped to give him a tight hug, ‘’Hannibal I-‘’ you were going to explain what happened but he patted your back, ‘’I know love, I know.’’ He hugged you like there was no tomorrow, like you were the only one for him, he caressed your cheeks, kissed your forehead with his plump lips. ‘’Are you hungry? We can have breakfast for dinner and watch your favorite cartoon show.’’ He knew how to make you comfortable all the time, you felt loved and appreciated. ‘’Yes yes yes! Thank you!’’
