I can’t tell you how happy I am to have discovered the ‘Irish & Celtic Music Podcast!’ But I’m gonna try, all the same!

You see, in my childhood, my 5 siblings and I would get loaded up into our family station wagon every Saturday morning by our mother. She would then proceed to drive us all into Boston for our weekly Irish Step Dancing lessons. Our rides both in and back were spent listening to Boston’s AM’s radio show, ‘The Irish Hour,' and later, ‘The Irish Hit Parade,’ (still on the air to this day!)

So, those jigs and reels were ingrained in us in our step dancing, and the other traditional music was from our rides there and home. My mother soon landed us an agent, and we, the six kids, danced all around the Greater Boston area.

So, it is no real big surprise that these days, I play in an Irish Music Band with my family. Comprised of myself, my brother, two sisters, and brother - in - law, we perform under the name of ‘FitzBlarney,’ based in Salem, Massachusetts.

I’ve attached a coupla’ photos for you, too - one of the six of us in our 1970s step - dancing attire, and one from this past St. Patrick’s Day, where FitzBlarney played out at The Witches Brew pub in Salem.

The music you play means a lot to me, so, I recently became a patron. Just out of appreciation! Thanks again, and ‘Sláinte!’

Brian Williams meets Charlie in Vietnam

There we were in Vietnam, Brian Williams and I, deep in the jungle, the humidity coating our tan skin. We'd reached an opening after a long trek down a tired path and we were looking for Charlie. "Charlie Goldberg, you old sonofabitch!" Brian shouted at a white haired man a thousand paces in front of us, standing by a thatched hut, worn rag cleaning a knife. Cutco. "Brian! Buddy! You're early. Hold on, let me lock up the knives." Charlie was an old NBC producer and he knew the deal about Brian and knives. Brian began walking faster. "Take it easy, Brian, we'll get there." "I'm not speeding to get to the knives." "Of course not." "Brian!" A voice shouted, suddenly, from our right. A large man stood inside a narrow clearing. "Michael M. Malkawitz!" Brian shouted back, the empathetic pronunciation of the middle initial betraying his panic. "You startled me." "I could tell. Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you. We just moved here." "To Vietnam?" "That's where we are, right?" "Aren't you on the New York desk?" "Yeah, but Manhattan rent is absurd. Here we get four rooms for twelve dollars a week." "The commute though--" "Nah, the whole team's here. We green screen it." "But we shoot live outdoors in Rockefeller Center." "China built us a replica. Looks exactly the same. Incredibly fragile concrete so we just do outdoor shots." "Did Joan come with you?" Joan was Michael's wife, they'd been childhood sweethearts. "Dead. Malaria." "Wow. I'm so sorry. When?" "A few hours ago. Hey. Beer? We've got ice." Wait, no, I'm sorry. I was at Paragon Sports with Todd Montesi discussing spots white people like and in my excitement I confused the stories. It happens.
