"Mother, you're hovering again." "Can never be too sure of the... integrity of your work. Especially with your conflict of interests." "If you're so concerned of foul play in my craft, I can always leave you to solve the matter of Father's imprisonment by yourself." "That.... won't be necessary." "Then let me work in peace."
"...They've turned you into such an unfilial child." "I'm here, aren't I?"

Turned a practice piece into a short fic. Enjoy!
The Prompt: A character shows up for a blind date but runs away before the other person.
Title: Ancient Blind Date
Summary:
An IronBull AU where there had been a war between celestials and demons.
When the Demon Bull King had been the Demon Bull Prince, he had clashed with Princess Iron Fan in the battlegrounds a few times in said war.
So much so that it made a deep but secret impression on DBK. When the war was over, he tried to get over his foolish admiration that was realistically out of his reach -by agreeing with a blind but open rendezvous with another noble.

I'm living for the potential hilarity of more and more events of the past coming out and the cast reacting to that, including the things Sun Wukong’s capable of. Like Mei and Tang's canon reaction when Sun Wukong remade the T.E.A. into a rocket.
On the other end, it’d be hilarious if Sun Wukong, DBK, and Princess Iron Fan can’t recall some “details” anymore because hey! It was either over 500 or 1,000 years ago!! How should they be able to remember everything?
I put “details” into quotes because sometimes, those things were actually bigger things.
Imagine their reactions when they do recall something important they should have before right as the repercussions rain down on them. These old people just couldn’t remember them until now and it’s hilarious.

I've seen a lot of nicknames/titles for certain characters such as Dage, Xiandi, Tiesan and others but what do they mean and who exactly do each of them belong to? I do my best with the given context but I'm hopeless with some of them.
Some of the words/titles I use come from Jttw itself + regular Chinese titles.
"Dage" literally means "Older Brother". Wukong calls a bunch of his closest bro figures this in the book. In Chinese it can be used casually among friends like "bro". The affectionate version is "Gege" = "Big bro".
"Xiandi" is what DBK calls Wukong in the book during the Brotherhood-era; meaning "worthy little brother". Apparently it started because SKW was the youngest of them. Its a mix of "Xián/Worthy" and "Dì/Didi/Little brother".
"Tieshan" is literally Iron Fan's name in Chinese. Her full og title is "Tieshan Gongzhu" = "Iron Fan Princess".
Similarily in fanon; Macaque ocassionally calls PIF and Chang'e both "Jiĕjie" which affectionately means "Big Sister". "Dà Jiě" is the "Older/Big Sister" title used in polite conversation with any woman older than the speaker.

The Origins of Red Boy
I believe I have found the origins of Red Boy (Hong hai'er, 紅孩兒), his name, and his fire powers from Journey to the West (Xiyouji, 西遊記, 1592). I plan to write an article for my research blog, but it probably won't be until next year. Until then, I want to post my findings here for all to read.
Although the 1592 edition of Journey to the West casts Red Boy as the son of Princess Iron Fan (Tieshan gongzhu, 鐵扇公主), an early-Ming zaju play that predates the novel says his mother is the demon goddess Hārītī (Guizimu, 鬼子母).
Tumblr media
A 1st-century BCE Gandharan statue of Hārītī.
Scene 12 of the zaju play sees the Buddha trap Red Boy under his alms bowl in order to force Hārītī to mend her evil ways and convert to Buddhism. This story comes directly from Buddhist canon. Various sources tell how the demoness ate the children of untold numbers of human women, who eventually sought out the Buddha. The Enlightened One knew that Hārītī herself was the mother of 500 (or more) demon children and also that the youngest of them, a boy named either "Pingala" or "Priyankara" (sources vary), was her favorite. One version of the story ends with the demoness converting to Buddhism in order to save her beloved child, who had been hidden under the Buddha's alms bowl. Therefore, Red Boy can confidently be traced to Pingala-Priyankara.

A sketch of the Buddha's alms bowl.
The name Red Boy has puzzled me for some time, but thanks to art sent to me by an expert on Hārītī, I was able to crack the case. Some art shows Hārītī's son wearing red clothing—i.e. a "Red Boy".

The early-Ming zaju play doesn't associate Red Boy with fire. This appears to be a product of the 1592 edition. The novel calls his power "True Samādhi Fire" (Sanmei zhenhuo, 三昧眞火). It's so powerful that nothing short of Guanyin's holy dew can extinguish it. So where did his power come from?
Tumblr media
A modern drawing of Red Boy's fire powers.
Journey to the West (1592) states that Guanyin gives Red Boy the religious name "Boy of Goodly Wealth" (Shancai tongzi, 善財童子) after he submits to Buddhism. This is the Chinese name of "Sudhana", a child cultivator famous for studying under 53 divine and mortal masters in the Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra (c. 200-300).
Tumblr media
An 11th or 12th-century print of Sudhana (left) and one of his teachers (right).
Sudhana's ninth teacher, Jayoṣmāyatana (Shengre poluomen, 勝熱婆羅門), likely influenced Red Boy's fire powers. The brahmin is said to wield a fearsome holy fire called the "Samādhi light of adamantine flame" (Jingang yan sanmei guangming, 金剛焰三昧光明). It's so powerful that it scares even the gods and demons, but it's true purpose is to incinerate the ego and enlighten the mind. Sudhana comes one step closer to enlightenment by jumping into the flames as instructed.
Tumblr media
A Song or Ming-era Japanese painting of the fire brahmin and Sudhana.
The Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra mentions that Jayoṣmāyatana practices extreme fire austerities on a flaming mountain. This is interesting because, despite Hārītī being Red Boy's mother in the early-Ming zaju play, Princess Iron Fan and the Flaming Mountain episode do appear later in scenes 18 to 20 of the production. Therefore, the author-compiler of Journey to the West (be it Wu Cheng'en or otherwise) could have combined the similar elements from each story, making Red Boy-Sudhana the son of Princess Iron Fan and giving him the brahmin's fire powers.

Note
After recovering from having his mind blown at learning DBK's actual name, MK began searching for more unfamilar names in Wukong' contacts.
"Tieshan Gongzhu?"
"Princess Iron Fang."
"Lianhua Santaizi Nez-Oh, that's Nezha's full name, right?"
"Yep."
"Hm..Liu Er Mihou?"
Wukong abruptly swiped his phone and stared in confusion. "When did I get Macaque's number?"
Earlier...
“...Mr. Sun…?”
Wukong looked up from his bowl of cold fruit noodles at the tug on his sleeve and felt a smile form. “Hey, kiddo.” Qi Huiying smiled at him sweetly. “How are you?”
“I’m great!” the kid said as she hopped up onto the stool next to his. Wukong leaned back to give her room. It was a sheer stroke of luck that she didn’t seem to be upset about her near death at his hands but Wukong wouldn’t try to bring it up. “My school had a field trip today.” Wukong nodded. He had heard about that. “And when we got to the zoo, we were the first group to see the new baby monkey!”
Wukong blinked. “New baby monkey? Really?”
Huiying nodded. “Yep! They were born a few days ago but they got released into the enclosure today!” She held out her phone. “I got some pictures and I wanted to text them to you because I figured you would like it but I don’t have your number…”
“Say no more.” Wukong pulled out his phone. “Add your number.”
“Thanks!” Huiying said as she plucked the phone from his hand. Wukong smiled as she set to work adding her number to his phone and his to hers, turning back to his noodles.
He didn’t notice Huiying lean over, offering Wukong’s phone to the shadows. A hand darted out, typing a new contact into the phone, before finishing with a hiss of “Good job.”
She handed the phone back to an unaware Wukong.

through the grapevine
pairing(s): implied sun wukong | monkey king/ liu er mihou | six-eared macaque & demon bull king/tieshan gongzhu | princess iron fan.
words: 339
rating: mature (?)
a/n: cw for alcohol & torture mention (in jest). i wrote this between two other fics i’m working on. i like the idea of macaque and iron fan being friends. this is set pre-jttw. you can find me on ao3. enjoy.
He eyes Wukong from his place at Iron Fan’s side. The wine in his glass whirlpools as he turns it between his thumb and forefinger idly. It was rich, and he could already feel the heaviness of it weighing his limbs even after a few meager sips. He doubts Wukong will have the restraint to control himself, not with its sweet, fruity flavor. Lightweight, he thinks affectionately, even as he frowns into his glass.
Predictable, as always, a crash sounds from the far end of the room. Wukong stumbles this way and that over a shattered vase, seems just about ready to tip over before Bull King steadies him with a hand to his back. He does not appear to be faring well either, should his rheumy eyes and the slight sway of his body be anything to go by. A look passes between both of their flush faces, something like confusion.
Then they laugh, as if one of them had told a fine joke, full-bellied and boisterous. Macaque winces at the sound.
“You’ve coupled with a fool,” Iron Fan comments, her tone light yet testy. She takes a pointedly demure sip from her glass.
The effect it may have had is muddied by the wine. Macaque brings his own to his lips. “And you a bull, are we so different?”
“My husband does not make an ass of himself during what is meant to be a political rendezvous.”
“No, he makes a bull. A rather large one, might I add.”
“…It is best you were made a warrior and not a jester,” she says dryly. “Your jokes are terrible. Had you been ours, I’d have you flogged.”
“And lose the political leverage and blackmail that comes with? Please, you adore me.”
She sniffs, but he hears the smile she attempts to hide behind the rim of her glass. “I contest that.”
They jerk at the sound of another crash. Macaque sees the muscles of her eye twitch.
“Kings,” they sigh, full of exasperation and warmth all at once.

A sneak peak into my next LMK work: Feng Yue Hua
Tieshan Gongzhu hadn’t always been her name.
Once, she was Feng Yue Hua, the distant beauty of the Feng family.
Yue Hua had never been a major goddess like her relatives, the four winds, but she was told she was a necessary one, and, in those days, she had believed in heaven’s word.
She was that serene, impossible feeling of peace atop China’s tallest mountain, as fleeting as the wind. She was the necessary perfection for humanity to strive for, but never achieve. She was beauty itself.
Feng Yue Hua didn’t regret her fall from heaven, not even for a moment, but she was never addressed by that name again.

Alright, a break on the angst and on serious topics for the time!
I love to imagine shenanigans for the Monkie crew and friends in various constellations. (Let’s assume they’ve made some progress in healing + communication.)
Chaotic gremlins Long Xiaojiao, Qi Xiaotian, and Sun Wukong.
Traffic Light Trio + Nezha going racing. Or all-for-all sparring session. Or playing video games.
Awkward tea time with Sha Dali, Sun Wukong, and Demon Bull King. Bonus points if Hong Hai’er is there for the extra family stuff.
Also, Hong Hai’er and Sun Wukong. Nephew and uncle / shufu bonding.
Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Long, Iron Fan and Demon Bull King, Zhu-Dachu and Tang-shifu. It’s parents-meet-ups at various times to gossip about their children.
Scorpion Demon finds her way into the city. She becomes a regular at Zhu-Dachu’s restaurant and accidentally shames Tang-shifu into paying for his meals because she’s a great customer and always pays well and instantly. “Friends are kind to each other, aren’t they?”
She and Iron Fan also become fast friends.
