First, I have to apologize to you for the long lag time in updates. One of my initial complaints when I first learned that I had lung cancer was that I kept having procedures, but never seemed to get any fresh information on my condition. Now, I see that I have not updated you all since December 22. Sorry. You can refresh yourself here: What you can learn from my lung cancer on my last post…

Today I had the best time volunteering for a teaching project (which is led by our chief vascular surgeon).
That is, apart from the fact that we ran into some of our abdominal surgery attendings, who gave me a massive (verbal) side-eye for technically hanging out with the vascular surgeons in my free time. (Some of them don’t really see eye to eye, both medically and personally).
And I’m soooo sick of it, can’t I just try to figure out what I eventually want to do with my career without having to navigate a social and political minefield?

Dropping some Charles lore that I cannot work into any of my fic because the main problem is him and his parents not Talking to Each other:
So we know there’s a Distance between them. And we know even by the time Charles is around 30 he can only refer to what happened to Timmy as ‘the accident.’ They have never told him otherwise. We know Charles’ response to genuinely being harmed (not just his whining) is to be silent. I wonder where that comes from!
I think Timmy must’ve had a heart defect, I wouldn’t expect them at the time to recognize exactly What, but they knew at the very least it wasn’t an Accident.
Honoria’s stutter probably came as the result of a childhood streptococcus infection, which was the common cause around the time she was growing up. Charles had two sickly little siblings depending on him and no answers coming from his parents, no doctors to be seen visiting the house because it might Scare the Children. Well, too late for that.
We know Charles’ dad is not a doctor. I think this is a path Charles pursues on his own (even though he’s pushed toward Harvard I still think he set out to go to medical school.) He wanted answers. Generally we know he wants to understand how things feel and what is happening. He develops this Forbidden special interest in death when he’s Way too young (see also, his butterfly collection) but they don’t want to talk about it so it just Develops. I think his parents resent doctors almost implicitly. A doctor couldn’t do anything for Little Timothy except say ‘this is incurable’ and ‘here’s how to make your son comfortable’ which are horrible things to have to hear as a parent. Even treating Honoria’s infection does not return her speech to the way it was developing prior to her falling ill. What good is a doctor, anyway? And there we have the distance that stays between Charles and his parents for the rest of his life.
They’re content to brag about their son at parties etc, he’s the Head of a Department at the hospital. Isn’t that nice for him. And Charles’ obsession with understanding death so he can prevent it. Except he can’t always prevent it. And the cycle continues.
(Naturally I thought he hadn’t suffered enough in the narrative and the heart defect would be something he’d pass on to a child. Then he finally has a reason to confront his parents about it, too.)

Surgery Help
I’m undergoing surgery this august to help deal with my endometriosis. For those who might not know, endometriosis is a lovely disease of the afab reproductive system in which the inner lining of the uterus grows elsewhere in the body. This leads to a whole host of things, but for me means chronic widespread pain.
I have been in and out of doctors offices and urgent care due to my symptoms. I spent Thursday in the ER because of my symptoms, and have had a low grade fever and infection symptoms purely because of the stress on my body. There is a high likelihood that there is tissue pressing on my sciatic nerve and causing issues in my legs.
I have a surgery scheduled to deal with any abdominal endometrial tissue, but my insurance won’t cover all of it. I’m trying to raise money to cover the rest. This likely won’t be my only surgery, as there is some indication of it being in my diaphragm.
Anything helps

Yesterday was my birthday!
In the past I typically love celebrating my birthday! That normally involves either game nights with friends or a fun trip. Last year and now this year due to health issues those things have been difficult to do.. Last year I was fresh out of surgery and this year I'm just a few days away from a major surgery. Because I can't do much to celebrate I figured I would share my wishlist for surgery recovery items. Since I have fibromyalgia I need all the recovery help I can get! I'm so ready for the surgery but I also know that recovery is going to be rough!
The wishlist link is here
https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/21DWNBKK7SDHD?ref_=wl_share
And if you don't want to use Amazon, my PayPal and Venmo are both @SelinaMariaA and CashApp is $SelinaMAngotti
The reason for the surgery is that after having reoccurring blood clots we discovered that I have Venous Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (vTOS). So to allow my veins to work properly I'm having decompression surgery, which will be removing my first rib on the problem side and possibly removing muscle, and I will probably need vein repair too. It's been hard dealing with this, my arm and shoulder has been just getting worse and worse. I'm so thankful that my hematologist recognized it for what it is!
