today i learned that there's a grey's anatomy "fellowship" where they actually hire surgery residents to help with the medical writing and fact checking
the sad thing is that it pays more than actual residency
the other sad thing is that this is not a new thing, so either the residents they hire are really bad at their jobs or (more likely) the show writers just ignore them

Highlights of the internship - Week 3:
• I have been treated so poorly in the ER by the nurses, like I have never been before, probably because I am female. My male friend told me he did not have the same treatment the day before that. I was invisible for a couple of minutes and then when they decided to see me, it was time to push me and pull me as if it is my first time in ER. They have not even allowed me to suture the patient, until my attending let me do it in the next operation. The most annoying part was they talking about how my male friend has sutured many patients the day before while not giving me the instruments to do it. “Maybe another time” they said.
• When I stopped by my gynaecological oncology attending, I told him about how I removed the double J stent and he told me that when I start ob/gyn, I might do C/S and some operations. I am already so excited!!
• Having cramps while having to stand up almost the whole day is torture. I’ll have to find a solution for that because I want to be a surgeon 🥲
• I have watched PEG tube insertion for the first time. Actually, I have watched so many of them in a day that I don’t need to see it anymore probably ahaha.
• I have had my first 24-hour-shift. I was hoping to see many patients but being the unlucky person I am, I have seen only two of them 😭. I have not even attended an operation. The only upside was that just before I left in the morning, I have inserted NG tube for the first time! I have been wanting to do that for a while.

Highlights of the internship - Week 4:
• AKA the last week of general surgery+urology.
• I happened to have an accident in the OR, a bloody one. After having a sense of coldness in my legs, I looked down and saw that below my knees were fully covered in blood of the patient. My white socks were not white anymore but red. And it was all because the drainage tube was not clamped after it was placed in the abdomen. Not going to mention how my look was made fun of by my lovely friends and attending. And what would be the worst is if I did not luckily have extra clothes with me in that day, the bottoms I grabbed from the OR with my own scrubs’ top was going to be my outfit for Barbie 🫠
• I had chance to watch a part of nephrectomy for the first time.
• I had also chance to scrub in for an ileus operation; it was a ‘wow’ moment to see the adhesion which causes the obstruction up close.
• In the end, our group has taken photos with our attendings. Overall, it was an enjoyable rotation. Though I know what’s coming next will make me more satisfied <3

Comparison Of General Surgery Vs Minor Surgery Billing
Tumblr media
The fundamental goal of surgical procedures is to amend and repair any mutilation, damage, or injury within the body. Doctors usually remove any harmful tissues having a bad impact over the health of a person. This is why surgeons are considered to be some of the most sophisticated people in the entire healthcare sector.
However, there is still a distinction between the ones carrying out general surgery vs minor surgery. These are the main two types of surgeries and let’s look at what both of these surgeries mean for patients.
Fundamental Aspects of Major Surgeries
The basic aspects of major surgeries involve cutting through the skin of the body and enabling the surgeons to access the infected region. As a result of such major surgeries, the skin tissues are extensively damaged and require an extended period for recovery. The overall risks of infection are quite high and most of these surgeries end up leaving a life-long scar on the body.
Here is a list of the names of major surgeries falling into the general surgery category:
Heart surgeries
Cesarean section
Joint replacement
Bariatric surgeries
Organ replacement
Full hysterectomy
Gastric bypass
Although some of these procedures can be carried out in a less-damaging manner, but it is clear that almost all of them leave a major trauma on the body and its tissues. Some even leave perpetual complications as well.
Fundamental Aspects of a Minor Surgery
Minor surgeries are primarily the ones that cause less damage to the body tissues and do not result in long-lasting trauma. This means that majority of the minor surgery cases are done either arthroscopically or laparoscopically. To perform such procedures, very minor incursions or incisions are made, allowing only a small camera alongside the surgical tool to be inserted inside the body. Because of this, the surgeon is able to perform the surgery without any extensive damage to the bodily tissues. As a result, the overall risk of infection is reduced and the over recovery rate is much better as compared to the general surgery. Moreover, minor surgeries also involve multiple procedures that are mostly superficial. This means that they only have an impact on the outermost parts of the body.
Here is a list of some of the most popular Minor surgeries:
Arthroscopy
Breast biopsy
Cataract surgery
Laparoscopy
Debridement procedures
Dental restorations
Circumcision
Burn excision and
P.S: All of these surgeries are minor surgeries but they do involve some risks. However, the risk is lesser in degree and patients usually recover in less time.
To sum it up, both major and minor surgeries are done with utmost care and they should be considered carefully. There is no doubt that risks are involved in both of the procedures but the benefits outweigh them. This mainly because these procedures are done to improve the overall quality of life of patients and they are necessary in many cases
