a jew review of: nhl team happy hanukkah posts
good evening and chag sameach to my hanukkah-celebrating pals out there on hockeyblr. today i bring you: a non-comprehensive and entirely subjective review from one (1) jewish hockey fan of the graphics posted by various nhl teams in celebration of the first night tonight. i definitely missed some, and some teams didn't post any at all, so it's a bit patchwork. here we go.
Tumblr media
vancouver canucks: this is an extremely serviceable graphic. love the blurred dreidels to give the effect that they are spinning. very funny. props for the detail that there is a shadow of the menorah on the ice. straightforward. icemenorah is a themeTM but some did it better than others and this is a classic. 7/10
post continues under the cut for the sake of your dash and mine.
Tumblr media
carolina hurricanes: obsessed with what the canes have done here though i cannot comprehend it. the weird techno style textured background. the out of focus magen david around. THE HURRICANES. IN HEBREW. WITH THE LITTLE CANES LOGO THING I FORGET THE NAME OF ON THE HEI? INCREDIBLE. points for creativity. overall baffling vibes. 6/10.
Tumblr media
pittsburgh penguins: this is just adorable. you hired someone to draw this. spectacular work, guys. it's giving a bit of 'we browsed the target hanukkah deco section for inspo' but it's too adorable for me to care. it's team themed, it's hockey themed, it's holiday appropriate. love everything going on here. they get points for doing what very few other teams are doing and remembering this is night one, so only one candle is lit. most everyone else is getting a bit a head of themselves. 9/10.
Tumblr media
washington capitals: and here we have another edition of the icemenorah, with a minimalist twist. this graphic screams 'oh fuck wait is that tonight' which to be fair is also how i, a jew, felt about realizing tonight was the first night of hanukkah. could'a done more, but it's perfectly fine. 6/10.
Tumblr media
new jersey devils: this fucks. it's got devils themes. it's got a cool style. it's got vibes. it's got: more hockey stick menorahs which i am always excited about. that shamash candle is a graphic design nightmare but other than that i am all on board. 8/10
Tumblr media
vegas golden knights: i love the gold foil effect and that you remembered there was more to hanukkah than candles, that's nice, as is involving the other affiliates! however. where are the vibes. this is not the vgk wishes you a chag sameach, this is a greeting card i got on etsy. 6/10 just bc i KNOW you can do better. where's the neon, babes.
Tumblr media
los angeles kings: oh this is fun. it's icemenorah: WITH A TWIST. the art style is cute, it's got plenty of hockey theme, it's also very obviously LA-y, i'm giving them points for this one. the shadow is insane but that's okay, it's ~stylistic. it's cute. 7/10. UPDATE: definitely AI. boo hiss. 0/10.
Tumblr media
montréal canadiens: this is probably my favourite for sheer vibes. you got: levitating icemenorah. you got: action-shot candle lighting. you got: remembering this is night ONE. you got: the implication that the torch is the shamash candle????? you got: JOYEUSE HANOUKKA!!!!!!!! (and like happy hanukkah or whatever i guess). obsessed. it's so funny. it's amazing. 9/10.

Beyond the Word Count: A Book Editor's Guide to Writing a First Draft
Tumblr media
Every year, we’re lucky to have great sponsors for our nonprofit events. First Draft Pro, a 2023 NaNoWriMo sponsor, is a beautifully designed writing app for fiction writers. Today, they've partnered with Kelly Norwood-Young, former book editor for Pan Macmillan and Penguin Random House, to bring you some pro tips on writing your first draft:
In my career as a book editor, I’ve reviewed hundreds of manuscripts. I've seen the joy of authors creating compelling tales, but also how disheartening it can be to rewrite a disjointed story. I’m here to give you some strategies to address common pitfalls so that you not only reach your NaNoWriMo goal, but also lay the groundwork for a manuscript that truly deserves to be called a gripping novel.
1. Have a plan.
Even if you’re more of a ‘pantser’ than a ‘planner’, it's really helpful to have an outline. I have two favourite approaches for this: the structure-first approach, and what I call the ‘Phoebe Waller-Bridge approach’.
The structure-first approach
There are a lot of narrative frameworks for story structure, but the most foundational in Western fiction is the three-act structure. Here’s a handy guide that breaks each of the classical three acts into a day-by-day guide to NaNoWriMo:
8-day guide to Act 1
14-day guide to Act 2
8-day guide to Act 3
The Phoebe Waller-Bridge approach
I love this quote from Phoebe Waller-Bridge: ‘I’ve never thought structure first. I’ve always thought material first, jokes first, character first ... But knowing the end really helps. Then you just go as far away from the end emotionally as you possibly can.’
Sketch out your major story arcs, your character’s desires and conflicts, and the world they inhabit. The more you know your story's world and inhabitants, the less you'll stray into scenes that lack purpose or create plot and character inconsistencies.
2. Keep the story moving.
Each word needs to propel your story forward. Superfluous details or tangents that don’t serve the narrative stall the momentum you’re trying to generate for your reader.
There’s a trick you can use to move your story forward, called the question of reversibility. Ask yourself: How difficult would it be for my character to reverse their decision? The harder it would be for them to turn back, the more you’ve moved the plot forward.
3. Plant clues carefully.
Plant important elements early and make sure every element, however subtle, serves a purpose (i.e. Chekhov’s Gun).
Be sure to set up necessary components for your climax so that you can steer clear of Deus ex Machina (having that strong outline will help you here), and avoid red herrings unless they serve a clear, meaningful purpose (e.g. you’re writing a mystery and your readers expect some false leads). Misleading your readers without a payoff can erode their trust.
4. Write for the reader, not yourself.
‘There is only one thing you write for yourself, and that is a shopping list,’ insists Umberto Eco in On Literature. Even if writing, for you, is a therapeutic outlet, a form of self-expression, or a way to leave a legacy, you’re still writing to say something to someone else. Your story simply won’t be as strong if you forget your reader’s perspective.
5. Keep daily editorial notes for your future self.
While editing should wait until at least December, end each day with a brief reflection, noting any off-course deviations, potential inconsistencies, areas to research further, or moments of inspiration to revisit when you start editing.
These daily notes will be invaluable during the editing process, helping you to remember insights that are no longer fresh when you come back to the manuscript later.
6. Embrace the first-draft mentality.
There’s a lot you can do to ensure that your first draft is the best it can be before the end of November—but just as important is to understand that all first drafts have flaws.
As a book editor, I've witnessed manuscripts transform, sometimes unrecognizably, from their first drafts. Embrace the uncertainty and creative detours—because it's from this beautiful chaos that your story will find its true voice.
Kelly Norwood-Young is a seasoned book editor and proofreader with comprehensive experience across various facets of manuscript editing. Her background includes roles at Pan Macmillan and Penguin Books, extending into a successful freelance career working with award-winning authors. Kelly's work, known for its precision and sensitivity to the author's voice, has been integral to the success of both new and established writers globally.

(Old ranking - go to my blog for updated rankings)
My rankings/reviews of all the k dramas I have seen so far (up to 26 now). My top 5 has been cracked by 2 shows! Netflix k-dramas are just killing it. I would recommend any show I gave a C grade or higher. I bolded the 5 new dramas I’ve added.
*= reserving the right to change ranking after season 2.
1) Hometown Cha Cha Cha: An absolute masterpiece. It’s a heartwarming fish out of water story about a big city girl who finds herself in the quirkiest little seaside town. I wanted to stay in Gongjin forever. Grade: A+(Netflix)
2)*Extraordinary Attorney Woo (S1): The most delightful show ever. Never have I ever rooted for a lead harder. She is the most endearing lead you will ever find. And the male lead is THE standard by which all men will forever be judged. Grade: A+(Netflix)
3)Business Proposal: Bumped this up again cause it’s the show I have the urge to rewatch the most. I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s got every trope you can think of and it does them all to perfection. Plus it’s hilarious. Grade: A (Netflix)
4)*Alchemy of Souls (S1): Episodes 1-19 were the perfect blend of fantasy, adventure, mystery, comedy, and romance. With so many characters who are so lovable. Episode 20 will destroy you. Counting the seconds till season 2. Grade: A (Netflix)
5)Her Private Life: Super funny and charming. The romantic leads have incredible chemistry. The premise is so good! Might be the one of the most rewatchable kdramas. Grade: A (Netflix)
6)Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung: Great strong female lead. Very good messages. Couldn’t stop watching. The most adorable prince I’ve ever seen 💜Cha Eunwoo💜 Grade: A (Netflix)
7)Sh**ting Stars: Probable the biggest turnaround of any show I’ve seen (The “Africa” part was so problematic). However it turned out to be one of the funniest and swooniest KDramas out there. There are 5 couples and you will cheer for all of them. Grade: A- (Viki)
8)Strong Woman Do Bong Soon: The main couple is absolutely everything! Just fast forward through pretty much every side plot (they are not important) and you’ll love it. Grade: A- (Viki)
9)So I Married the Anti-Fan: It’s campy, fluffy, goodness, with a fierce female lead and a K-pop star enemy/love interest. Fastest binge of my life. Grade: A- (Viki)
10)Start-Up: Exceptional acting, compelling storylines, intriguing plot twists, great cinematography, intense love triangle. It’s just all around high quality. Grade: B+ (Netflix)
11)Run On: Cute, fun, silly and pretty light. I especially loved the supporting cast. Strange storyline but it was a fun easy ride. Grade: B+ (Netflix)
12)Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo: A bad-ass yet vulnerable female lead. The main couple just had a lot of fun together. Refreshing. Grade: B+ (Viki)
13)I Am Not A Robot: I was surprised I really liked this one. This goes in the zany premise category but it was surprisingly pretty grounded for how crazy the set up was. It’s funny, emotional, good story telling. Great character development. Grade: B+ (Viki)
14)Shopping King Louie: Adorable! Luis is too cute. I love it how he bops along like a penguin and his cute little screams at bugs. And Bok Sil is the warmest character, you just have to root for her. So many light fluffy feels for this show but it does drag a bit in the second half. Grade B (Viki)
15)Fight For My Way: Such lovable leads. Love the fierce female lead and adorable himbo male lead. It’s like a coming of age story but for 30 year olds. Storyline was ok. Second couple was skippable. Grade: B (Viki)
16)What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim: More PSJ is always a good thing. This drama did all the tropes in ways that didn’t always feel fresh, but it was very romantic and hilarious. A true classic. Grade: B (Viki)
17)Touch Your Heart: If you can just stick it out through the first few very shaky episodes, you will enjoy this adorable, fluffy, series. Grade: B- (Netflix)
18)Doom at Your Service: It was sometimes real sad yet ultimately a heart warming mystical story. Grade: B- (Viki)
19)True Beauty: Fun, cute, teen drama however, it’s a little too “antsy teen” for me. Cha Eunwoo though💜 Grade: C+ (Viki)
20)Suspicious Partner: Great story, great characters, attractive actors, beautiful romance, interesting plot, sometimes funny, sometimes suspenseful, but with 40 episodes, the plot was dragged so far out that it became hard to get through. Grade C+ (Viki)
21)Crash Landing On You: The first half is GREAT but the second half is way too melodramatic for my taste. It’s a very interesting storyline, the main couple has insane chemistry, and there are very lovable side characters. Grade: C+ (Netflix)
22)My Love From the Star: The main relationship is incredibly intense. I just wanted to find out what happened to them so I ended up fast forwarding through everything else. The age difference in the flashbacks creeped me out. Grade D+ (Viki)
23)My Secret Romance: The story of a total screw up female lead falling for a manipulative, gaslighting, hottie. It was problematic yet fun? So 🤷‍♀️ Grade: D+ (Netflix)
24)Our Beloved Summer: I LOVED V’s “Christmas Tree” OST however I struggled to keep watching. Boring storyline but great acting. Grade: D+ (Netflix)
25)Goblin: The age gap is too disturbing for me, like call the police disturbing. However, the Grim Reaper who is one of the most adorable characters I’ve ever seen. Grade: D- (Viki)
26)Extra-Ordinary You: I have never felt so betrayed by a second half of a series as I did in this one. All of the character development that it seemed to be leading to was replaced by a pretty sickening codependent relationship. Grade: D- (Viki).
Currently Watching: Today’s Webtoon (kinda blah), She Would Never Know (idk yet), Romance is a Bonus Book (loving it), 100 Days My Prince (so far so good).
Looking Forward To: Love In Contract, Alchemy season 2!
What are your thoughts on these shows? Do you agree or disagree with my rankings? Any k-romcom recommendations that are not on the list yet?

Top 10 worst Bruce dad moments?
So here's the thing. I'm not actually like. That well versed in the comics yet? Again like. Only been here for about six months. But I'll do my best anyway
10. Firing Dick
HE FIRED DICK FROM BEING ROBIN. THE NICKNAME HIS MOTHER GAVE HIM. THEN GAVE SAID NICKNAME TO ANOTHER CHILD. WHAT THE FUCK.
9. Steph as Robin
Honestly everything about this is a mess. I've only read a few pages from this arc but Tim quitting being Robin was a really difficult decision and Bruce's response was to give the job to Tim's sort-of-ex girlfriend and then treat her like crap. I believe it's canonically cause she reminded him too much of Jason, but that might just be the fandom's reading of the subtext; either way, if the shoe fits...
8. Telling Damian if he was there, Alfred wouldn't have died
What the FUCK, Bruce, that is your SON. COMFORT HIM FOR THE LOSS OF HIS GRANDFATHER
7. Robin!Tim in general
Listen intentional or not Tim is written as a character that has very much internalized needing to be useful being more important than anything else. His parents simply prioritize work over him point blank - his dad doesn't even remember his birthday, for God's sake - and Bruce simply like. Does not help with this. If anything he takes advantage of it. Tim needs to be loved unconditionally, like, STAT, like, that would fix 70% of his identity issues kinda STAT, and I'm not sure he's ever felt that with Bruce
6. Free space: any time he's hit one of his children that I don't know about
I once reblogged a post that detailed every time he hit Dick but that's long gone into the ether now, I can't find it. Anyway there's no excuse to hit your child. Don't fucking do it. They shouldn't hit you, either, doesn't make it ok for you to do if they've done it fyi. Batman can do non violent solutions, we know this, so fucking use those on your children.
5. Reviving the joker
I believe Dick isn't necessarily mad about not having murdered a man basically in cold blood, but I am. What the fuck, Bruce. You tried to kill him twice, you really wanna tell me you don't understand the urge and NEED to kill him??? And then you BRING HIM BACK TO LIFE??? Again. As I've said. What the FUCK
4. Killing Dick and sending him off to Spyral
Actually Dick shouldn't ever forgive Bruce for anything he's ever done to him ever. Have you seen the panels where they have this argument? His family GRIEVES him and for what!!!! For WHAT
(I understand Grayson itself is actually great I wouldn't know I haven't read it. Doesn't make what Bruce did okay tho. I'm also not sure I trust the positive reviews it's written by Tim Seeley and Tom King like......)
3. RHatO Rebirth #25
Penguin didn't fucking die. He didn't get shot in the face with a real bullet. You don't beat your son half to death to the point where he needs to be RESCUED from you - actually no need to qualify that sentence with the intended "over something that didn't actually happen", you simply don't beat your son half to death, should be a no brainer and YET
2. UTRH end scene
Heartbreaking. We all know at this point. Batarang to the throat. Chooses the Joker over Jason. It's enough to make a fully grown (25 next month) man (eh) cry (I mean. Yeah)
1. INTENTIONALLY TRIGGERING JASON
See here for the ask where I talked about this (and which is presumably the ask that led to this anon). Taking Jason to Ethiopia with no warning when he's cooperating anyway just to intentionally trigger him in order to try to get Damian back to life when you never did anything like that for Jason? Holy fucking shit, you know? Just betrayal after betrayal after betrayal
Anyway I'm sure this list is missing some major moments and I'd love to know what I forgot about or, more likely, simply don't know about! I love a well written good dad!Bruce fic but lbr that's just not what he's like in canon. Calling him a mixed bag as a father figure is an understatement

Catching up on some of the things I've been tagged in. Some of these are very old. So sorry. I'm crap.
Fic author interview! I was tagged by the fantastic @lynne-monstr
No-pressure tagging: @pangzi @foxofninetales @merinnan @killerandhealerqueen @strandedchesspiece @thesilversun @silver-colour
How many works do you have on AO3?
266 as of now
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
1,467,370 words however some of those words are on collaborative fics. I don't know how to filter out the ones I wrote by myself but it's well over the 1,000,000 mark and that makes me happy
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Unleashed  (MCU, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers) - 801 kudos
Visible to All But Me - (DMBJ, Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling) - 666 kudos (ehehe 😈)
The Truth About Cats, Dogs and Penguins - (Men's Hockey RPF. Evgeni Malkin/Sidney Crosby) - 621 kudos
In which Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are surprisingly capable parents - (MCU, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers) - 530 kudos
Not The Russian Way- (The Man From UNCLE movie, Ilya Kuryakin/Napoleon Solo/Gaby Teller) - 516 kudos
I find it fascinating that a DMBJ fic is in my top 5. The other fics are all pretty old and in large and popular fandoms. I think it was just good timing in that I posted when a lot of people who have since moved on to other fandoms were into DMBJ off the back of Ultimate Note airing.
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try! I think it's just polite to at least say thank you. Occasionally I do forget of miss one though.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don't really do sad or angsty endings
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Yeah, pretty much all of them.
7. Do you write crossovers?
Very rarely. I think all my crossovers have been co-written with other people.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not hate exactly, but somone once accused me of plagiarism because I posted a fic with vaguely similar themes to one of theirs. Luckily for me this was back in the LJ days where there was a comm specifically for reviewing accusations of plagiarism where independent people would review both fics. Of course they ruled in my favour but it was really fucking upsetting at the time.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I have, but I prefer not to.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I am aware of.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! Someone translated one of my MCU fics into Chinese which made me very happy.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, a bunch of times! It can be really fun if you get along well with the people you're writing with.
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
That's like asking me what my favourite fandom is. My favourite ship is whatever ship I am into at the time.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
RIP my au for The Untamed where Lotus Pier was a hotel that famous musician Lan Wangji came to stay in while he was on tour.
15. What are your writing strengths?
Probably dialogue or soft domestic fluff
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Description. A beta reader recently commented that in one of my fics I hadn't actually described what anyone looks like. I just want them to talk and kiss, okay?
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Not full dialogue, no, but now that I've started writing in Chinese fandoms I think there are some words that can be used. Generally only terms of address, though. Like someone calling someone 'laoban'
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
I do still kind of want to write some Mysterious Lotus Casebook fic. At least one at any rate.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written
Juxtaposition (DMBJ, Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling)
I don't generally write AUs, and I definitely have never written anything close to this long before. It took me a year to write it and I am very proud of it.

MARIO MOVIE QUICK REVIEW (SPOILERS)
.
.
.
.
.
OK I WATCHED THE MARIO MOVIE LAST WEDNESDAY AND LET ME TELL U — I. HAD. SO. MUCH. FUN.
OH MY GOD I FELT LIKE A LITTLE KID AGAIN IT WAS AMAZING. i felt like it was a little too fast paced BUT OVERALL; THE MUSIC, THE COLORS, THE ANIMATION, T H E M U S I C??!!?!! IT WAS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. characters felt a kinda static but, then again, the mario characters usually are like this. ig i was just rlly hoping for someeee development, yk?? oh well. ANYWAYS, AMAZING MOVIE, SOLID 8/10, LOVED IT SO SO MUCH
OK WHAT I RLLY HATED WAS HOW LUIGI WAS LITERALLY THROWN INTO A CAGE AND STAYED THERE UNTIL THE LAST 20 MINUTES OF THE MOVIE. LIKE WHAT. 🙁🙁
THERE WERE A LOT OF THINGS I WAS HOPING WOULD HAPPEN BUT IT DIDNT — fear not though, for i am an artist. i will happily storyboard my ideas myself to fulfill my own satisfaction. like, i was totally expecting luigi to escape the castle with the help of the penguins and the luma star but they didnt. i would go on and on about the movie BUT MAYBE LATER
WATCH THE MOVIE YOU GUYS!!!!!!

Phil Dunster is the audiobook narrator for a book that was released in some regions (not the U.S.) today, April 25.
The book is "A Beginner's Guide to Breaking and Entering" by Andrew Hunter Murray, of the podcast No Such Thing as a Fish.
Murray tweets about the book here. His Linktree.
Review from Irish News:
Al has rules for breaking into wealthy people’s second homes when the owners are away, such as wearing gloves, never running away if seen, and having at least two stories if he has to explain what he’s done. He also doesn’t go back to the scene of a previous ‘interlope’, as he calls his break-ins – and Al isn’t his real name. But all his careful planning for living a life at someone else’s expense changes dramatically when he discovers a group of similar ‘interlopers’ – and they stumble across a dead body. The unlikely group of unofficial house-sitters go on the run, trying to avoid being charged with murder but determined to find a killer. The book is filled with humour, shocks, love and hate – and a few handy tips on how to beat the housing crisis. Fans of the podcast No Such Thing As A Fish – which Murray co-hosts – will love his trademark style of being funny, thoughtful and all-round entertaining. 8/10
Visit Penguin Books UK for various places to listen to it.
(Note that the book is region locked and not released everywhere.)

Wonderful Precure Episode 8 Review - The New School Semester
It can’t be a Precure show if there’s no school in it. Iroha, Satoru and Mayu start their new school semester with the latter being the new transfer student! Komugi wanted to go to school with Iroha, but given that she’s a dog and that she needs paperwork to get in, it’s impossible for now.
Tumblr media
Mayu was trying her best to not mess up her introduction, but she screws up twice. Fortunately, Iroha saves the day by being friendly to her, helping Mayu ease her tension. It turns out that Mayu’s previous school was called Koizumi Gakuen. I read on Twitter that Koizumi Gakuen was where Futari wa Precure took place. That’s a nice callback to previous seasons! It was cute seeing all the classmates being interested in Mayu. They seem like nice kids. Anyways, it’s nice that Mayu did enjoy her time at school today and wanted to go back tomorrow. I have to say, the school uniforms for this series are adorable. The way the girls’ uniform has skirt and shorts variants make it stand out. Iroha, Mayu and Satoru look really good in it! The only downside is that brown school uniforms already have been used in Delicious Party, but I’m not the one to decide school uniform colors.
The way there are so many animals in school shows off why they live in Animal Town. Though, I do wonder if school will be important for this series because it wasn’t that important in Hirogaru Sky. Satoru is in the Biology Club while Iroha has many friends who ask her to help out in sports clubs. Come to think of it, do Precure main characters join clubs? Sora wasn’t in a club. Yui wasn’t in one either and was mainly helping out with the soccer club. Is it a leader Cure thing to not be in clubs? There is an equestrian club in the school too. I think it’s cool that this series’ school has a lot of animals. Because there are horses, the main GaruGaru of the week was a horse.
Komugi was pure comic relief today. Though, I do worry about her separation anxiety when it comes to Iroha. Despite that, I do love how that she still behaves like a dog even when she becomes human. She is easily distracted by different smells and has a short attention span as typical of most dogs. I think the part where she and Yuki were “hissing” at each other was hilarious. Yuki doesn’t want anything to do with her while Komugi wants to play. Yuki sees Komugi turn into a human—will this be a major factor for Yuki later on? Will she wish to become human in order to talk with Mayu?
The main GaruGaru is a horse, like I said. However, since it appeared in the school, I’m surprised no one made a comment about seeing the black horse or saw two girls in frilly skirts fighting it off. I was a bit disappointed that the Kirarin Lion’s power has to do with speed, just like the penguin, but it makes sense that it’d be legs and not a roar because scaring off the horse would be the last thing the girls would want. Props to the lion paws being rocket shoes. It’s a cool aesthetic.
Komugi starts school next episode and I just want to know how that is going to happen. Given that there’s a close up of Satoru when Iroha mentioned Komugi wanting to go to school, maybe he’ll play a part in all of this? Will he ask Mey Mey to forge documents? Also, will Komugi even do well in academics? She’s a dog, so she has a short attention span. I just cannot imagine Komugi being able to solve math problems. What are your thoughts on today’s episode and what do you think will happen with Komugi next week?

Royal Penguins Garden
I've been looking at this card for a while now while typing this review and I just unquestioningly thought that the centerpiece bird fountain depicted a penguin. Because of the card's name. Just me here looking at this bird with huge ass wings going "yeah I believe that's a penguin." I guess that's just a testament to how much I like this card. It's so cute! Easily the cutest part is the cartoony penguin heads painted onto the big hedges. I love that the sky gets very soft outlines for the (absolutely adorable) penguin clouds and light rays, while the buildings and such get harder and solid looking line work. I do feel like the contrast between the lineart and the pastel colors makes parts of this look a little wonky, mainly talking about the purple outlines used towards the bottom. The grayish blue used further up meshes better with the color palette honestly. There's also something about the red used for some of the rooftops that's throwing me off, but I couldn't tell you exactly what.
Rating: 8/10

Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
Tumblr media
So I believe I've already mentioned the reoccuring trend with Dreamworks franchises where the second movie of any given franchise of theirs is usually on par with quality of the first movie or even better, and I would say that certainly rings true for good ol Madagascar 2 here. In that it's on par with the first movie, though I'm not sure I'd call it better... Let's get into it.
Tumblr media
We pick up with our squad of lovable animals leaving Madagascar, only to crash land in the African Savannah. There, Alex reunites with his parents, Marty finds a whole flock of zebras just like him, and Melman and Gloria start to realize they have feelings for each other. Meanwhile we have the Penguins trying to fix up their plane and King Julian being, well King Julian. There are a lot of subplots floating around here, but I think they're all pretty engaging! Alex is clearly the focus this time around, while the first movie focused more on Marty, and the arc Alex goes through here is actually really engaging (and wow, another Dreamworks protagonist with some daddy issues, another trend we really get in this era of Dreamworks imo)
Tumblr media
All of our favorites from last time around are back and just as funny as they were in the first movie. There aren't too many new characters, though the ones who are here are pretty fun, such as Alex's parents. Unlike the last movie, this one actually has a genuine antagonist in Makunga, and well, he's just Scar. Like, there's a lot of elements from this movie lifted from Lion King and Makunga is really just a lamer version of Scar. He's ok. Nowhere near as based as our other standout "antagonist" here, the crazy old lady from the first movie.
Tumblr media
The comedy is once again exceptionally on point. Lots of fast-paced physical humor mixed with whitty jokes and humor that comes naturally out of the characters strong personalities and how they interact with each other. I would say that the emotions ring a little stronger in this movie than the first one actually, with the heavy focus on Alex reconnecting with his family and on Gloria and Melman's surprisingly well done romance. Marty has the weakest arc out of our main four, but we still get some decent moments of friendship between him and Alex, which is a nice way to harken back to the first movie.
Tumblr media
The animation here is also very smooth, again focused on that fast-paced brand of humor this series is known for, with a solid score that works to carry both the emotions and comedy through very nicely. Dreamworks has really hit their stride in this era of their existance, and this movie, despite its status as a sequel, is a pretty good testament to that.
So yeah, Escape 2 Africa is pretty great! I had a blast watching it again after all these years, and I really do enjoy watching this zany band of characters and their wacky adventures. Granted, I've never seen the third installment of this franchise, so I guess we'll have to wait and see if it maintains that level of quality moving forward. But as for this one, it's well worth watching.
Overall Rating: 8/10
Verdict: Moto Moto is comin' for you

A Guide to Persona 5 Royal Confidant Requirments
Persona 5 Royal saw an additional semester and the return of the Phantom Thieves following its initial release on September 15, 2016. Here is your guide to Persona 5 Royal in case you need to review anything you missed or are having trouble understanding even years after the game's October 31, 2017, release.
It's always a good idea to review before diving into the additional characters and confident rank requirements! In Persona 5, you take on the role of a teenage kid who was wrongfully accused of a crime and serves out his probation in Shibuya, Japan by living in a cafe's attic under the owner's care. As the game progresses, players come across characters who have also been harmed by sinister adults, which opens up a method for forcing them to confess their wrongdoings. With a runtime of 110 hours, this synopsis hardly covers the entire game, but it does cover the main idea.
Confidant Requirments
In Persona 5 Royal, to enjoy the extra semester there must be certain confidant ranks reached to obtain the true ending. Two new characters, Kasumi Yoshizawa and Takuto Maruki, and one returner, our favorite detective, Goro Akechi.
Goro Akechi
This edition of Persona 5 includes the chance to hang out with Akechi, unlike the original game. To receive the true ending, players must:
Raise Akechi's Confidant rank to 8 before November 17
Remain loyal to your friends during the rank 7 hangout
Don't worry if you end up stuck at rank 6; most players will experience this until November. You can find him in Kichijoji outside the Penguin Sniper Lounge. Typically, this will continue until rank 6, when he will be located at a Cafe Leblanc booth. Usually, Akechi is available on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Kasumi Yoshizawa
Kasumi is a new addition to the cast in Persona 5 Royal, and with this comes her rank requirement:
Raise Kasumi’s Confidant rank to 5 before the end of the year.
Despite how straightforward this may sound, Kasumi is more busy than any other character in the game when it comes to her schedule. To reduce the possibility of running out of time, it is best to hang out with her every chance you get. During the day, she can be found in Kochijoji, and until the third semester, her rank remains locked at 5.
Takuto Maruki
Another new addition to the cast is Maruki, the school counselor brought in due to Kamoshida. His rank requirement is:
Reach Maruki’s Confidant rank 9 before mid-November
To access the third semester, Maruki's confident rank is necessary. After school, you can find him outside the nurse's office. Although there are more opportunities for sessions with Maruki, it is also advised to hang out with him whenever he is free due to the long period in which he is unavailable.
As Persona 5 Royal introduces new personas, a brand-new palace, and an emotional rollercoaster for every player, the game's allure never fades. Remember to have fun exploring and getting to know the new (and original) characters in the new edition. Just remember to raise those confidant ranks and get to work in the metaverse!

Gotham definitely have an app similar to yelp but instead of restaurants it’s a villain hostage situation. Like
The Penguin’s Lair : Very snazzy, use anti-allergic rope, very considerate of meal preferences, although they only give it once a day, 8/10
The Joker : A lot of bones in the room, won’t respect you as a human but will respect your pronoun, 5/10
Mr. Freeze : Very cold but he will provide a warm jacket when asked, food just basically ice cream, a bit obsessed with his wife and will only talk about her, a terrible conversationalist tbh, 7/10
Riddler: All thought goes into his death traps and none into comfort. I spent all day hanging upside down over a vat of acid before Batman was even contacted for taunting, but we did get alphabet cereal (the letters were all question marks), 2/10
Hush: He took my face wtf do you think? I wish this app went lower, 1/10
Poison Ivy: [keysmashing from a clearly still enthralled former hostage who hasn't had the pheromones wear off], 10/10
Lock-Up: wait this wasn't a bdsm dungeon experience? Ohhhhh shit, 9/10
Anarky: idk I think this guy is a kid, but he gave me a reasing list and now I'm participating in a protest outside the bank? I'm kinda confused, 6/10
Catman: rail me catdadddyyyyyy 10/10 [review removed for lack of clarity]

(Old ranking - go to my blog for updated rankings)
My rankings/reviews of all the k dramas I have seen so far (up to 21 now). I bolded the 3 new dramas I’ve added (Goblin is no longer in last place). I would highly recommend any show I gave a C grade or higher.
1) Hometown Cha Cha Cha: It’s an absolute masterpiece and delight. I want to live in that fictional community forever. Grade: A+(Netflix)
2) Her Private Life: Super funny and charming. The romantic leads have incredible chemistry. The premise is so good! Might be the most rewatchable of all the k dramas I’ve seen so far. Grade: A (Netflix)
3) Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung: Great strong female lead. Very good messages. Couldn’t stop watching. The most adorable prince I’ve ever seen 💜Cha Eunwoo💜 Grade: A (Netflix)
4)Business Proposal: It’s got every trope you can think of and it does them all to perfection. It’s so good and will make you feel all the good feels. Plus it’s hilarious. Grade: A (Netflix)
5)Sh**ting Stars: Probably the biggest turnaround of any show I’ve seen (The “Africa” part was so bad). However it turned out to be one of the funniest and swooniest KDramas out there. There are 5 couples and you will cheer for all of them. Grade: A- (Viki)
6)Strong Woman Do Bong Soon: The main couple is absolutely everything! Just fast forward through pretty much every side plot (they are not important) and you’ll love it. Grade: A- (Viki)
7)So I Married the Anti-Fan: It’s campy, fluffy, goodness, with a fierce female lead and a K-pop star enemy/love interest. Fastest binge of my life. Grade: A- (Viki)
8)Start-Up: Exceptional acting, compelling storylines, intriguing plot twists, great cinematography, intense love triangle. It’s just all around high quality. Grade: B+ (Netflix)
9)Run On: Cute, fun, silly and pretty light. I especially loved the supporting cast. Strange storyline but it was a fun easy ride. Grade: B+ (Netflix)
10)Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo: A bad-ass yet vulnerable female lead. The main couple just had a lot of fun together. Refreshing. Grade: B+ (Viki)
11)Shopping King Louie: Adorable! Luis is too cute. I love it how he bops along like a penguin and his cute little screams at bugs. And Bok Sil is the warmest character, you just have to root for her. So many light fluffy feels for this show but it does drag a bit in the second half. Grade B (Viki)
12)Fight For My Way: Such lovable leads. Love the fierce female lead and adorable himbo male lead. It’s like a coming of age story but for 30 year olds. Storyline was ok. Second couple was skippable. Grade: B (Viki)
13)What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim: More PSJ is always a good thing. This drama did all the tropes in ways that didn’t always feel fresh, but it was so romantic and hilarious. A true classic. Grade: B (Viki)
14)Touch Your Heart: If you can just stick it out through the first few very shaky episodes, you will enjoy this adorable, fluffy, series. Grade: B- (Netflix)
15)Doom at Your Service: It was sometimes real sad yet ultimately a heart warming mystical story. Grade: B- (Viki)
16)True Beauty: Fun teen drama however, it’s a little too “antsy teen” for me. Cha Eunwoo though💜 Grade: C+ (Viki)
17)Crash Landing On You: The first half is GREAT but the second half is way too melodramatic for my taste. It’s a very interesting storyline, the main couple has insane chemistry, and there are very lovable side characters. Grade: C+ (Netflix)
18)My Secret Romance: The story of a total screw up female lead falling for a manipulative, gaslighting, hottie. It was problematic yet fun? So 🤷‍♀️ Grade: D+ (Netflix)
19)Our Beloved Summer: I LOVED V’s “Christmas Tree” OST however I struggled to keep watching. Boring storyline but great acting. Grade: D+ (Netflix)
20)Goblin: The age gap is too disturbing for me, like call the police disturbing. However, the Grim Reaper who is one of the most adorable characters I’ve ever seen. Grade: D- (Viki)
21)Extra-Ordinary You: So here’s the thing, I was obsessing over this drama for the first few episodes because the premise was brilliant. It was a funny parody of a teen romance where the female protagonist became self aware and empowered. However it changed around episode 10 and became the exact antsy teen romance it started out critiquing. The codependency and melodrama ultimately made this series pretty hard to watch. I honestly feel the writers betrayed their characters. Grade: D- (Viki).
Currently Watching: Alchemy of Souls (and LOVING it), Extraordinary Attorney Woo (will be ranked so high/Kang Tae Oh😍), My Love From the Star (I’m uneasy about the Goblin vibes), Suspicious Partner (so many episodes), I Am Not a Robot (seems fun), Today’s Webtoon (not sure if I’ll finish).
What are your thoughts on these shows? Do you agree or disagree with my rankings? Did you feel Extra-Ordinary You was a huge letdown? Was King Louie the actual cutest? Do you like CEO or himbo PSJ better? How are you liking the ongoing dramas? Are you also loving Alchemy of the Souls? Are you cheering for attorney Woo as much as I am? Are you excited for Kang Tae Oh finally being the main love interest? What should I put on my watchlist next?
