I suddenly felt that I had resources, I’d never before used my resources — and now a whole latent power was throbbing inside me, and a greatness was overtaking me: the greatness of courage, as if fear itself had finally invested me with courage.

"Aficionados of South American fiction as well as literary critics will welcome this posthumous translation of a nearly plotless novel by one of Brazil's foremost writers. Availing herself of a single character, Lispector transforms a banal situation—a woman at home, alone—into an amphitheater for philosophical investigations. The first-person narration jousts with language, playfully but forcefully examining the ambiguous nature of words, with results ranging from the profound to the pretentious: "Prehuman divine life is a life of singeing nowness" or "The world interdepended with me, and I am not understanding what I say, never! never again shall I understand what I say. For how will I be able to speak without the word lying for me?" These linguistic games frame existential and experiential crises that Lispector savors and overcomes. Although this idiosyncratic novel will not have wider appeal, those with academic or markedly erudite tastes should find much to savour."

bio warning: mental illness, death
Jean-Baptiste Facilier doesn't know a lot about his mother other than she was the one who named him, and that shortly after his birth, she was admitted to an asylum. According to his aunt Dorothy, she always babbled about how a Shadow Man was coming to take her baby away. Shortly after she was admitted, she died of unknown reasons in the hospital. So he never really got the chance to know her for himself. Though aside from all of that, he had a normal childhood. His aunt Dorothy gave him an education from home and taught him many things, ranging from sewing and arithmatic to dance and reading. He never really had questions about his father until he entered his teen years. His aunt had never met the man, and the only clue he had to go on was his given last name. It had to belong to his father right.
When JB was seventeen, he finally went out to seek his father, which he did. He didn't quite like the man his father was, but he wasn't surprised to see how dastardly the doctor was given the fact that he was absent through his life. Regardless he worked to build a relationship with his father and his half-sister, Calliope. As it turns out, Calliope was pulling a con of her own against their father. Though Jean-Baptiste could see right through it, he wasn't about to blow the whistle on her. The doctor along with Calliope gladly taught him about the other side, before he disappeared once again into the night. All that remained were whispers in the streets of a shadow man. J wondered if maybe that was who his mother rambled about. Maybe she wasn't crazy after all. Maybe his father let JB find him.
It didn't take long for Jean-Baptiste to realize that he wanted to use his newfound skills to help people rather than trick and deceive. He received an education in medicine and used his skills along with the knowledge he gained to become a holistic healer. He decided to return to his father's old shop after his education only to find that his half-sister was now running it. He decided to take her up on an offer to work there with her. Using his skills to heal peoples' minds, bodies, and spirits.

Atop a windswept hill in rural Georgia stood a 19-foot-three-inch high granite monument with a series of instructions for living in a future “age of reason.”
Unveiled in 1980 near Elberton, about 100 miles northeast of Atlanta, the Georgia Guidestones have been shrouded in mystery and the center of controversy for decades. The true identity of the man who commissioned the monoliths and the meaning behind its cryptic 10-part message inscribed in eight languages remain unknown.
The mystery of the Guidestones' destruction now adds to that lore. The structure, dubbed "America’s Stonehenge" by some and “satanic” by others, was blown up last month by an unidentified person.
But the Guidestones – or pieces of them, anyway – have found a new home.
Earlier this month, the Elbert County Board of Commissioners voted to give the remains of the monument to the Elberton Granite Association. The group, which runs the Elberton Granite Museum, agreed to take the stones, but they've yet to determine a new home, said Elbert Granite Association Executive Vice President Christopher Kubas.
“The only options (the Elbert County Board of Commissioners) had were to basically destroy them completely and be done with them or they could donate them,” Kubas said. “We agreed to take the stones in an effort to preserve them, mostly because the monument was really a testament to the type of work that we do here in Elberton in manufacturing granite monuments and memorials.”
A mysterious sponsor
It was Elberton’s granite industry that drew a well-dressed man under the pseudonym R.C. Christian to the town east of Atlanta in 1979.
He contacted the Elberton Granite Finishing Corporation’s President Joe H. Fendley Sr. to inquire about the cost of building a large monument and identified himself as the representative of “a small group of loyal Americans living outside of Georgia who wished to remain anonymous forever,” according to the Elbert Granite Association.
Fendley put the man in touch with his banker Wyatt C. Martin, who became the intermediary for the project. Martin vowed to take Christian’s true identity to his grave, CNN and Wired reported.
Christian chose an isolated, 5-acre cow pasture as the site for the monument. Key craftsmen and special crews were brought in to assist with its construction, which took more than nine months, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
On March 22, 1980, the Georgia Guidestones were unveiled before a crowd of about 400 people. By the late 1980s, the Guidestones were drawing thousands of visitors, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.
The site began to attract even more people with the rise of the internet in the mid-1990s, Kubas said.
“The Guidestones kind of took on a life of their own,” Kubas said. “From that point, they became more popular as more people saw them on the internet.”
The structure, located at the highest point in Elberton County, consisted of four large vertical blocks surrounding a center stone with a 25,000-pound capstone, and served as a sundial and astronomical calendar.
The huge panels contained a cryptic message for humanity engraved in English, Russian, Spanish, Hebrew, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi and Swahili that many have interpreted as a post-apocalyptic guide for rebuilding humanity:
Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature
Guide reproduction wisely – improving fitness and diversity
Unite humanity with a living new language
Rule passion – faith – tradition – and all things with tempered reason
Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts
Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court
Avoid petty laws and useless officials
Balance personal rights with social duties
Prize truth – beauty – love – seeking harmony with the infinite
Be not a cancer on the Earth – Leave room for nature – Leave room for nature.
The slabs’ first two instructions mentioning population control and eugenics drew criticism and helped fuel conspiracies surrounding the monument.
Conspiracies surrounded monument
Over the decades, some have claimed the stones are satanic or connected to the right-wing conspiracy theory with anti-Semitic origins known as “New World Order,” which centers on a small group of elites secretly working to establish all-powerful control.
In 2009, the stones were splattered with polyurethane  and defaced with graffiti reading: "Death to the new world order," Wired reported.
Due to acts of vandalism on the stones, surveillance cameras connected to the county’s dispatch center were installed at the site, Kubas said.
The stones recently drew attention during the Georgia’s gubernatorial primary. In May, failed Republican gubernatorial candidate Kandiss Taylor publicly pledged to demolish the Guidestones, claiming they were satanic.
"God is God all by Himself. He can do ANYTHING He wants to do. That includes striking down Satanic Guidestones," Taylor tweeted the same day the monument was bombed.
The fall of the Georgia Guidestones
At around 4 a.m. on July 6, an explosive device went off at the site of the Georgia Guidestones, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation  said.
The explosion shattered one of the four giant vertical slabs, and authorities later demolished the entire monument over safety concerns.
Surveillance video released by law enforcement shows the explosion and a car leaving the scene shortly after.
Authorities are still on the hunt for the bomber.
Beyond the mystery and the conspiracy theory that surrounded the stones, Kubas said the monument was a feat of craftsmanship.
“It's not so much what was written on them because that was not anything we came up with – that was something that was originated by Mr. Christian – but the fact that we were able to produce those and had made this very large monument was really a testament to what we do here in Elberton,” Kubas said. “There's really not too many places where that could have been manufactured.”
He said discussions regarding the future of the remains of the Guidestones and how they could be displayed have yet to begin.
“It's unfortunate,” Kubas said of the bombing. “There are people that think that, just because they don't like it, that nobody should have that opportunity to see it or experience it and so they're going to destroy it for everybody else.”

Week 4: Digital Community and Fandom: Reality TV
Social media platforms have proven to be popular and powerful in today's globalized world, reaching every segment of the entertainment sector, including reality television. In this blog, let's learn how Reality TV has shaped digital communities and fandoms. Specifically, we will explore one region - Vietnam.
Tumblr media
In simple terms, a program features real people (untrained and/or ensemble actors) in real settings (not studios) acting out events based on their real lives or played by real people. The television creation created is called reality television, according to Kraszewski (2017) (Schneider 2018). In Vietnam, 2023 is called the year of the boom of reality TV shows because, after many years of silence, audiences once again have countless choices for entertainment, from music game shows to reality TV shows. Lively, humorous, drama reality TV, listed as: Masked Singer, 2 Days 1 Night, Rap Viet, The Face Vietnam, Vietnam Idol, Beautiful Girl riding the wind to break the waves, First to make a living, Having an appointment with youth, Hanging out and singing, Brilliant Journey, The New Mentor. (TRE 2023).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, despite so many programs, quality still does not match quantity (Linh 2023). For example, in the program The Face Vietnam 2023, viewers are completely unable to focus on the talent, qualifications, and skills of the contestants but are often caught up in the never-ending battle of the coaches (Chi & Page 2023).
Tumblr media
Like The Face Vietnam 2023, the same goes for The New Mentor program. Throughout all nine broadcast episodes, the audience did not clearly see the leadership talent and guidance of the contestants but only saw the coach focusing on "mouth" to compete for contestants or "complain" about the results of the competitions (Chi & Trang 2023).
Tumblr media
Thereby, it can be seen that television programs are increasingly noisy, lacking moderation, and building many dramatic confrontations despite the audience's reactions. As Pham (2013) argues, "Current reality TV shows are still mainly based on scandals, are not really creative, are still half-baked, and are unprofessional. Reality TV shows in Vietnam are mainly for entertainment and advertising purposes for sponsors but do not carry the true meaning of reality TV shows like in other countries."
Besides, there is also another side that is dramatic dramas and details that have created opportunities for reality shows to become more famous by attracting audiences and viewers to comment on social networking sites such as Facebook, Youtube. Program crews post drama excerpts of celebrities or contestants to attract passionate fan communities to comment, defend and debate a common issue. For Example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because those dramas create a community that can debate and share opinions with each other on social platforms, it can be concluded that reality shows in Vietnam have shaped the technical community. numbers and fan communities (Ozok & Zaphiris 2009). However, excessive drama brings negative things. Dr. Nguyen Tuan Anh (Youth Research Institute) said that conflicting situations on television are not only a war between stars but also a war between fan communities. “They argue with each other, even ready to insult and insult each other in cyberspace. These are uncivilized actions that need to be stopped immediately” (Linh 2023).
