Backstory headcanon for Ghost Writer

While he was alive, the man who would become the Ghost Writer only had moderate success as an author and poet. At one stage, he decided it was time to write his magnum opus, something that he thought could potentially “change the world”. His passion and determination unfortunatey lead to self-destructive habits: severly neglecting his health, losing many hours of sleep and isolating himself from those close to him (even missing his own half-brother’s funeral) all to continue his spectacular work. 

This took a major turn when he woke up in the Ghost Zone after a particularly stressful and restless 24 hours led him to keel over and die at his writing desk. Although he had been reborn in a new body that didn’t require the constant burden of eating, sleeping or any other distractions to keep him from his creative endeavours, he had forgotten every single word he had written down up to then. When he finally found a way back to the living world to get some clues from any drafts lying around, his former home and belongings had been cleared, leaving what remained of his magnum opus forever lost.

As he willingly continues his craft in the afterlife, he is still trying to recapture that spark of inspiration that would allow his truly greatest work to finally see the light of day, experimenting with every genre in hopes that even the smallest fragment of its plot would come back to him. In the meantime, however, he discovered he now possessed a brand new way to change the world with his writing...

The Ghost Writer (2010)

Rewatched this again tonight for the 8th or 9th time, and am bowled over once again at how close to a perfect film it is: just about the only bad thing in it is Ewan McGregor’s (completely unnecessary) English accent. 

The story itself is flawless: every twist and turn and plot development falls into place so naturally and organically, and every beat, nuanced performance and camera position is placed perfectly where it is like parts in a finely-tuned engine built to grip you and build suspense and keep you wanting to see what comes next. 

Every part, right down to the one-line-or-less bit parts, adds something vital and memorable to the story. On top of that, it has not even one but two instantly recognizable musical themes that fit perfectly with the mood: how many films in 2022 can even say that? Every moment of the film you feel yourself in the presence of a true cinematic master in complete control of all his materials.

Though seldom mentioned with the same reverence as Chinatown and Rosemary’s Baby, this is every bit as much a masterclass in how to make an unforgettable classic, and one of Polanski’s greatest and most enjoyable achievements.
