A Golden Lovers Timeline

PART 19: STRONG STYLE EVOLVED

okay two last things about the confrontation in the locker room (Feb 2018 - LINK) before we move on:

The lovers have a brief conversation in Japanese that ends with Kenny saying “shall we go home?” and Kota replying “let’s head home” (mithen translation LINK)

And THEN. (and i have absolutely nothing to say about this do not speak to me about it.) the scene ends with the camera zooming in on the open closet behind the lovers

ANYWAY.

after the confrontation with the bucks, Kenny goes to the states for a bit (we’ll get to his misadventures there in a later part) leaving Kota all alone in Japan where he competes in the New Japan Cup (March 9-21, 2018)

when njpw does tournaments they divide the tournament matches up so that half of them happen every other night. during the wrestler’s “off” night they do a multi-man tag match against their next opponent, and then the next night they have their singles match

and what that means is that Kota’s in need of some tag team partners!!!

and so begins a time I like to call Kota and the In-Laws.

Before reuniting with Kenny, Kota had been tagging with the loosely aligned collection of babyfaces that sometimes call themselves Taguchi Japan, but now that he and Kenny have renewed their vows, NJPW has started booking him with Bullet Club

Kota finds this very confusing

it’s honestly the best, because the BC members who are in Japan for the Cup aren’t any of the BTE guys, they’re all the Tongan faction (Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, and Yujiro) who have stayed out of the Cody/Kenny feud up to this point. they don’t really know Cody bc he’s new to njpw, and their relationship with Kenny is uh.. complicated at best. they respect him for his skill as a wrestler, but they’re all too aware that Kenny doesn’t respect them or the bullet club as a whole.

but njpw books them as Kota’s teammates for this tour, and even tho he’s literally no one to them, just the husband of the boss who just got coup-ed, and even tho they’re also pretty confused about this booking, they take the responsibility seriously.

during this whole tour whenever they tag with Kota all of the bullet club comes out to Kota’s music instead of their own and they always invite him to join the two sweet even tho Kota always refuses

it becomes a running gag during the tour

We hear from David Finlay that Kota is even spending time with BC outside of the ring, hanging out in their locker room and going out with them after shows

During one match when Finlay is on commentary we get this nice moment:

Kevin Kelly: “If you'd have told [Kota] three months ago, 'hey you're going to be teaming with bullet club' he'd have looked at you like you had horns growing out of your head.”

Finlay: “Well he might have been happy tho!”

Kevin: “Because that would mean that he'd have reunited with Kenny?”

Finlay: “Yeah, so I think a little piece of him would be like "yeah, i hope so."”

Then a little later we get Bad Luck Fale on commentary and he’s just super chill and understanding about Kota being kind of confused about this whole situation. He makes it clear that whether or not Kota is a BC member isn’t something that has to be figured out rn, and when Kevin points out that Kota doesn’t seem interested in taking part in BC-esq activities like cheating, Fale just replies "He's still probably trying to figure out what's going on himself."

It’s just this really lovely time where Kota is completely and utterly himself, not making any special effort to be accepted by BC at all, and yet this collection of heels who could have made the tour about their issues with Kenny, instead look at Kota and go “well i guess we just? Adopt him? idk?” and never look back.

And this takes us all the way to the end of march.

The bucks have been building up to the GL vs YB match in the meantime, making it clear that Nick is worried and uncomfortable with fighting Kenny, not sure if he can even hurt his friend (Nick Jackson!!! Professional monster boy!!! Unsure!!! If he can cause harm!!! Because of how much he loves Kenny!!!!!), and Matt is just bleeding feelings everywhere

in the BTE episode for the SSE show [LINK] we see that Kenny watched NJPW’s interview with the bucks (where Matt admits to feeling jealous of Kota LINK), we see him looking at the two golden wings on his new gear just as the interviewer asks “Kenny and Kota Ibushi’s relationship right now, do you think they're too close?”

Speaking of his new gear!!! Kenny has this gear made in his old DDT colors: green, orange, and gold. On the butt are two full golden wings, and between the wings are a golden omega symbol with a golden star inside it. “G” and “L” are written on his kneepads. A lone feather is attached to his right hip, and below that it says “best bout machine”

seeing Kenny with two wings again...yeah.

finally, just before the show Cody gives all the BTE guys these belts with their names on them. i guess they’re like weight-lifting belts? Matt makes a comment about crossfit idk, but for the purposes of this story they’re a symbol of alliance with Cody, and Nick hates them and does not wear his.

and now it’s time for The Saddest Match Ever

Strong Style Evolved - March 25th, 2018 [Official LINK, Unofficial LINK]

The GL vs YB match is the main event of Strong Style Evolved, NJPW’s show in Long Beach, CA, and the match that they put on is complex and unique

there’s no heel or face alignments here, and half of the participants (Kenny and Nick) desperately do not even want to be here doing this. Kenny and Nick’s horror at the prospect of hurting their friend

combined with Matt’s desperation to both hurt and be hurt

is extremely painful to witness

(And meanwhile the whole time poor Kota Ibushi is just Trying To Have A Match, like he’s just trying to do some wrestling here and everyone else is being so weird about it)

Kenny and Nick have to be won over to participate in the violence of the match, both of them really only finding the stomach for it after seeing their partner being hurt, but there’s never a moment when hurting their friend becomes easy for them

theoretically this match is about finding out which team is the best in the world, but even though the bucks lose, it’s so clear that it’s not because the GLs were “better.” it’s because Matt Jackson is emotionally and physically compromised

his back hampers him throughout, made worse by the GLs’ targeted attacks, and it gets to a point where he can’t even do most of the YBs’ moveset without help

but he’s never really focused on winning. matt’s focus is always on hurting Kenny and Kota (not beating them, inflicting pain and insult), and making Kenny hurt him back.

because the pain that Matt’s feeling would be so much easier to bear if he knew for sure that Kenny doesn’t love him. It’s the lingering hope, the fear and uncertainty, that make it so unbearable. so he wants Kenny to put an end to any doubt.

again and again in this match Matt lets the worst parts of his heart direct his actions, and through it all Kenny loves him.

Kenny has failed to be a good friend to Matt recently, he has taken the bucks for granted, he has failed to treat them as his equals, but in this match, when Matt is testing him, when Matt is demanding cruelty from him

Kenny refuses.

he hurts Matt but he never crosses that line. and every time he refuses, every time he hesitates, you can see that it’s almost worse for Matt than if Kenny had just done it, because it proves over and over that Kenny does care about him.

the truth that Kenny loves the young bucks genuinely but imperfectly, loves them, but not enough to give up Kota for them, almost feels worse than if Kenny had never loved them at all. because at least if Kenny never loved them Matt would have the cold comfort of his own righteous anger. at least if Kenny never loved them, this pain could be over. this could be simple. he could cut Kenny off and try to move on. but because Kenny loves them, that means it’s possible to fix this, and that truth is so much harder to face

when Kenny finally pins Matt, he doesn’t let go after the three count.

he just holds Matt and cries. he just loves him.

and he doesn’t ask anything from him. after winning, Kenny leaves the ring without reaching out to the bucks again.

but the events of the night aren’t over yet.

after the lovers leave, Cody comes to the ring and starts yelling at Matt for losing, and when Nick tries to intervene...

It’s a perfect, deliberate parallel of the events of the Golden Lovers’ reunion, except that Kenny was shocked and horrified to discover he had pushed Matt, and Cody is ready for more

But just like New Beginning, matt and nick are saved by a run-in from someone who loves them.

Kenny chases Cody off and then he offers the bucks his hand, just like Kota reached out to him. Nick accepts

and Matt doesn’t

Matt can’t let it go. Not yet. Not in the immediate aftermath of a match like that.

but even tho this night didn’t end with the Elite’s reunion, something has shifted. Matt’s not ready to forgive Kenny, but he’s seen the care and love that Kenny has for him

and he’s gotten his first glimpse of Cody’s true face

emma’s favourite kenny omega relationships

time to go through some of my favourite relationships with reasonings for each!

The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson)

they all share one brain cell <3 they’re all very silly and I love their trios matches. I miss when they did trios stuff :( but they are very funny and cute together on bte. I love them <33 they also put on fantastic matches together and I find their time as a trio very underrated!

Kenny Omega & “Hangman” Adam Page

My OTP!!!! They’re everything to me, from their friendship moments on bte, their moments during the anarchy of the arena match, and just…. Everything about them, they are so cute! Their feud from 2021 is also pretty spectacular as it’s probably Kenny’s best feud when he was AEW champion. (Plz go watch their full gear match, it’s worth it).

Kenny Omega & Will Ospreay

Besides the fantastic matches the two of them put on with one another, I think they have 10/10 chemistry when it comes to promos and in ring. One may say they’re “wrestling soulmates”, they never miss. (Also kind of a “hear me out” post because I ship them MADLY🫠), but please go watch their matches if you want some classic wrestling from two fantastic wrestlers.

The Golden Lovers (Kenny Omega & Kota Ibushi)

There isn’t much to say about them to be honest, to me they are the definition of love in a tag team. Which is what makes them so unique to begin with!! They have 10/10 chemistry and I love how they care so much for each other, the loyalty and love these two share for each other is just… fantastic. I won’t ramble on since this would be much longer if I had the time😭 but they are so amazing and AEW needs to open their eyes to call them the Golden Lovers!

Kenny Omega & Riho

Oh they are both soooooo sillyyyyyy together, Kenny trained Riho so it’s explainable why they are so close. But their mixed tag matches are SO cute and they seem to have a lot of fun together :3 which is everything to me!!! Especially when Kenny goes “RIHO GO!” And she starts beating the shit out of their opponents. We all miss Riho and I hope she comes back soon :(( but they are sooooo silly and funky!! (Also they are pure mlm wlw vibes)

Do you think it's possible that the BBC took out anyone they thought would potentially come to Hangman's aid??? To like. Make it SEEM like no one cares about or loves him anymore??? I just cannot see Dark Order NOT coming out to help him 😭😭

Or maybe I'm just being delusional and Hangy really did fuck up one of the only good friendships he had 😔😔

no, i definitely think it was intentional that they did it. mox was NOT happy about the loss to hangman, which he proved in the promo after revolution. further proof is the promo he cut before one of the first 3 matches on a Road To, where he said part of the reason he always wins is because he doesn’t like to lose. i think that quote is important too in the context of the elite as a whole. you can’t forget that mox has lost to very few men in AEW, and four of them are Hangman, Kenny, Nick, and Matt.

then there’s also the fact that bryan communicated his love for his friends out loud, something the elite never does on television. sure, on BTE. but even on BTE you have them miscommunicating all to hell. it’s definitely a jab at how the elite can’t ever get on the same page, emotionally.

they hurt Stu, Mox killed Uno at one point, they hurt Alex and John, they (likely) injured the Bucks, and then they took out Hangman to get to Kenny.

Now, Hangman walks out here on his own when he says something akin to “there’s no professional wrestler left in that locker room—,” just like how mox at the end of november said “there’s nobody back there, nobody within 100 miles that has the balls to take me on.” naturally, hangman answered both these calls. because he’s a fucking idiot and i think they’ve figured him out completely. just like he told punk that he would protect the aew locker room from him, he’s constantly coming out when there are wild insults made at the expense of his locker room. he is constantly putting himself in danger without back up.

do y’all remember when brodie cut that promo on hangman? how he is constantly without back up? how he doesn’t ever realise that the odds are against him? you remember when brodie said the dark order would protect him? at a bar or in the ring? that they would never leave him alone?

the dark order has always done that. if they weren’t taken out beforehand. i wonder if they’ll ever call back to those words one day, because it was such a powerful promo at the time. and i haven’t forgotten about the bucks/dark order segment on BTE around All Out last year, where they all spoke and buried the hatchet. i’d like to see them come together for real to protect him.

but i am just worried about how many eggs are being juggled here that i’m worried they’ll drop the ball on a few of them. i hope it ends up making sense, because i THINK it Does, but there’s a few pieces missing still.

back to the question, though. I DO think that them targeting his situation with his friends is very telling of where this will go. if hangman has no friends, he’s fucked.

so, hangman changed his spotify playlist and as far as i know he has changed everything (except for "that funny feeling", which is still there). so, obviously, i have to analyze this. enjoy!

The spotify list:

if anyone is unaware, our anxious millenial cowboy has a public spotify playlist, "anxious millenial cowboy". however, these songs are often ones that you can can connect to his character. i think it's a great and creative way to let the fans know what his headspace is at the moment! (check it out!!).

so, what do i think hangman is trying to convey with his new songs?

well, i think he is hinting a lot at an elite reformation. "the good old days" is a theme referenced in multiple songs throughout this playlist, which i take as him thinking back about his days in the elite, just him, kenny, and the bucks.

a hangman and bucks reconciliation is further supported by songs like "Heavy crown", a song about hardships within a friendship, and "Sooner than later", where a lyric that really hammers this theme home is:

"So tell me how should I say "I'm sorry." I swear by this time next year we're gonna have more money"

i believe that in with this song hangman is trying to convey that he wants to make up with the bucks, but is having a hard time doing so. much like how after the FTR-manipulated betrayal hangman tried to say sorry to them but failed or was unable to.

the song "send the moon" on the playlist also hints at a him wanting to reunite with the bucks, and there is a lyric i think is interesting here;

"Well, it’s hard to be apart, so many miles in between. Laying here in the dark, are you thinking of me?"

obviously hangman is not literally miles apart from the bucks, but within aew and their stables/factions, they are as far apart as they can be. hangman is with the dorkiest heel-turned-face faction, who just want the best for eachother, while the bucks are in the most assholey face-turned-heels stable in aew, currently being led by adam cole, the man who is very clearly trying to manipulate everyone else to hate hangman to not have his power within the group trivialized. hangman is also afraid that the bucks are not open to reconciliation at all (which is clearly not true, since the bucks have repeatedly refused to fight hangman with cole, and changed their header image on twitter recently to just the three of them).

several songs on this playlist are connected with the theme of running away. i do not believe this is about him literally running away from fights or otherwise, but rather from who he is. a lot of the songs are about running away to, yet again, "the good old days". a song showing this is the nina simone version of "Stars", used in the bojack horseman episode "Well that went well". if you aren't familiar with this episode (or bojack horseman in general), in the end of the episode where this is playing bojack almost commits suicide, but stops his car and looks out to see other horses (he is a horse) running free in the plains. he then decides to escape from LA, leaving behind his life that, to others, seemed so great and that he seemed so happy in.

i fully connect this to hangmans character, him having the pressure of the championship on his shoulders and needing to escape, to be with people who make him happy. (this is something that is said outright in the latest BTE episode).

several songs also show hangman feeling a lot of remorse of how he treated his friends during his title reign. this lyric from "worried, unhappy, lonesome and sorry" illustrates this perfectly:

"I turned off a love that was mine. And the misery that followed was my fault completely"

i think this perfectly shows how him drifting away from the dark order during his title reign effected him. he started neglecting and pushing the dark order away, and he places that and the consequences that followed completely on himself. this could also be seen as him thinking back at his fallout with the bucks, saying that he grew coldhearted and distant towards them and that everything that happened afterwards was his fault.

so, summary:

while this is not a complete analysis by any means (there are a lot of songs i have skipped), i think it's clear the see the core message hangman is wanting to show us. he wants reconciliation with his friends, both the dark order and the elite, after all the misery and shit they have gone through (which he blames on himself), and wanting the escape how he was living his life when he was champ (unhappy, lonely) and wants to get a new start, connected to "the good old days".

Any spare thoughts on the whole kenny/adam poisoning situation? How much fault do you think lies with Kenny, and how much with the Bucks?

hi anon! thanks for asking! i am far from a bte expert so i am wracking my brain trying to come up with something even remotely interesting to say here, but tl;dr: kenny's fault, but the bucks weren't at all coerced into it and adam also provoked them

bte is a cartoon so like, if ur applying any normal rules of morality or obligation of course the bucks are the ones who did it! kenny didn't threaten them or hold any power over them to force them to do it; he also didn't (ultimately) lie to them about what was going to occur.

however, in the rules of the bte universe, where the bucks' friendship with kenny is like, their operating rule, i think they were operating as extensions of him. they didn't push back particularly hard but they also didn't seem like they would have come up with the idea on their own. so yeah, they could have not poisoned adam cole! but they did it <3

adam was such a fucking dreadful monster to the entire elite lmao. like ya they had mostly made up by the end of it but like.. he poisoned nick, he messed with kenny's visa, he tried to kick them out of bullet club. he was clearly not trustworthy! they had to get rid of him SOMEHOW.

generally i'm not very interested in casting moral judgements on characters in wrestling bc like... the engine of story requires everyone turn heel all the time! and the nature of interactions is so heightened! so imo the poisoning was like, a relatively normal thing to do. rip rick knox, glad u made it out.

maybe for you but she definitely isn't for the fans that's why they ask why she's there bc she's not hen friend like ravi is? they're definitely NOT the same please

and AK also kept releasing several interviews talking about the flirting and teasing bte her and buck implying there was gonna be something? she only changed that after 5x11 aired and the backlash her character received

I wasn't talking about in terms of the fans though. I'm talking about in terms of their roles on the show. They're both significant but more background characters of the 118. We know some personal stuff about them, but mostly see them on calls/in the firehouse. If we see them outside of calls, it's at a 118 gathering. Any storylines they personally have are wrapped into a call, not their lives outside of work.

We don't know what Hen's friendship with Lucy is. We don't see everything that happens. But they seem to get along and have probably talked quite a bit off screen (because we don't see that much on screen). It's not hard to assume they're friends and it's not absurd to assume it either. Do Ravi and Hen have an onscreen friendship that we've seen though? Yes. Did I compare the friendships? No.

And people need to stop taking what people say in interviews at face value. I mentioned quotes from them only because that's all people are talking about. They wanna point out everything else besides the stuff that implies oh she's just there as a firefighter or that implies she's not a love interest. But interviews are used to hyped up the show. They overexaggrate among other things to catch interest. Arielle mentions the flirting (I feel like she treated it more like banter than flirting but I don't wanna hunt down the articles again) in later interviews, but they definitely treated it as this could be friendly but who knows (because she literally didn't know what the future held for them).

When all you're getting asked about is stuff that you can't give too much about and/or you don't have much to say on it, sometimes you throw stuff out there and it makes it sound bigger than it is.

I've said it before Tim had no fucking clue what he was doing with season 5 when he did that article after 4x14 about not addressing Eddie's trauma. So he just talked. And that was a bad move. But it's not a shocking thing. He had to give something.

Don't take interviews at face value. But if you're gonna listen to them, look at all the facts.

Wrestling storyline you would like to see play out in any company

Not really ne that I think should play out in anywhere otherwthan AEW but could have been produced a lot better. Is Hangman wiggling his way back into the Elite.

They had such a great set up with it. When the Elite actually slide in behind him and the aftermarth in BTE where we see Kenny kinda, not looking so peachy about having Adam around again; him sitting on the side of ther ing, not really looking or paying attention. FUCK kenny being the first one to LEAVE the ring

Hangman did so much wrong with the elite and to the dark order by defaul [thats another ask for when I have more braincells about it] and all of a sudden its like two years of storytelling and backstabbing has disappeared.

we could have had more golden lovers moments too with the reutn of hangman, Give us protective Kota knowing that Kenny is walking that thin line bteween understand and acceptance. Let us have another cowboy kota match

I dont have ways to string sentences together right now in a way that this anon deserves. But we should have had hangman earn his way back in the elite/re-earn their trust and we didnt have to break his friendship/found family with the dark order to get the reunion; because so far...what ahve they really done apart from have the dark order become less goofy buncha guys and more, much like what they were under brody lee, spooky cult men

A Golden Lovers Timeline

PART 16: HOMECOMING

it’s still Jan 28, 2018 the second night of New Beginning in Sapporo, and Cody and Hangman have just been run out of the ring by Kota. While the Golden Lovers play out their reunion, Cody takes this opportunity to pull at the frayed edges of the Elite’s bond [Post-match comments LINK, BTE ep LINK]

[ID: three gifs of the backstage comments. Matt is teary-eyed and standing supported by Nick while Cody promos at him. Cody says “Matt, are you okay? I do not understand this situation. Pretending to care about Matt, pretending he did this to Kenny for them, playing at being concerned and compassionate

Matt is clearly distraught, he’s tearful in the post-match comments and later when the BTE guys gather in a backroom you can see him rocking back and forth trying to sooth himself while Cody goes on a tirade

during early February 2018 there’s kind of a holding pattern [BTE eps LINK and LINK], Cody is living his best, villainous life, feeling that all his dreams are now almost within his grasp. but he doesn’t let up on his manipulation, he knows that the bucks haven’t really given up on Kenny.

he starts pressuring them to move up to the NJPW heavyweight division (something that would put them in direct competition with the Golden Lovers) because they are “the best tag team in the world.”

February 2 Tokyo Sports interviews Kota Ibushi about the Golden Lovers reunion [LINK]. He clarifies that he is not part of the bullet club and will not be joining them, even tho they are now legally his stable-in-laws. When asked why he saved Kenny he answers simply, “because he’s my friend.”

“It ended once. So this isn't us picking up where we left off, it's a completely new start. I'm excited to see what we can do as a team, now both of us [are] heavyweight. I can't imagine a better tag team than us. At the same time, we spent this time apart, and did completely different things in those years. How we'll do together after that time, how well we'll gel, that's another part of it. [...] We've taken such different routes. But I think there are New Japan fans that sense a difference (in level) between us. I'm the only one that really hasn't made a mark or gotten results in New Japan. I'm not looking to Kenny for help in that regard. That's on me to rectify. Of course, I want to team with him. But I'm still a singles wrestler. I want to make my mark as a singles wrestler. As a tag [team], I'm excited to see what happens, and no doubt, cool things will happen. 2018 just got really interesting."

just like Kenny, he’s not quite sure how this will go, but he’s committed to making it work

we get another update (Feb 13, 2018) when NJPW releases The Golden Comeback, a documentary on the GL reunion [NJPW LINK, Youtube LINK - please note that the youtube version is 15 minutes shorter and does not include most of the interview]

(Cody RTs the video and calls the GLs a “publicity stunt” saying “[Kenny’s] too selfish to love anybody” [LINK] (both bumping the docu and calling attention to the fact that the GLs are in love))

this same day Kenny likes this tweet calling Kota “that one beautiful man Kenny Omega loves unconditionally”

anyway this documentary is 30 entire minutes, and there’s just so much in it

first off, Kota makes clear before Kenny shows up that he sees this space, the private wrestling gym that he uses for practice (and has used for 10 years), as his home

but regardless of why the njpw people are there, Kenny is still Kota’s Kenny on camera. there’s a little awkwardness here and there, both of them sort of figuring out how to fall into this again, but the whole video is just filled with their soft joy and sweet giddiness at being together

one of my favorite moments is when Kenny pulls out one of Kota’s t-shirts

KENNY SAYING HE WON IT IN AN AUCTION AND THEM BOTH BREAKING DOWN LAUGHING???? it’s just the best

there’s all these little moments that show how much Kenny has been thinking about this, planning things out. he’s already brainstormed a new knee-based finisher, since their old finisher, the Golden Shower, is a bit more difficult now than it used to be and they need something they can do every match

(they do tease the Golden Shower during this docu and later, which makes me think they could still do it and were saving it for Something Special, but never got the chance)

and then the interview portion of the documentary begins. Kenny gives a brief account of his life and mindset since 2015, and it’s a little heartbreaking

"When Ibushi came to the ring, it was difficult at first to accept that he had noble intentions. For so long I felt so alone, that no one had the same idea of what wrestling should be. And maybe even to a degree that no one cared about me. I felt that it was just my job and my existence to give everything to wrestling. My health, my body, my soul. [...] didn't matter if I was broken."

Kenny had just accepted that as his lot in life and then here was Kota, loving him when he had lost everything. seeing and loving Kenny the person, not The Cleaner or the Best Bout Machine

and in the face of that love Kenny couldn’t turn away forever

Kota gets asked about why he came out to help Kenny, and you can feel the years of pining in his answer, and just how badly Cody played himself by pushing Kenny into revealing how much he still cares for Kota

“Through all these years, I've always watched his matches backstage. I was watching that day. [...] Kenny did the same for me at New Years Dash. I tried to play dumb [referring to his post-match comments at NYD], but I knew what he did. Kenny...was looking out for me. It felt like the GL weren't done yet. That's what I felt that day. I was compelled to help him.”

the interviewer then asks about the choice to extend his hand after saving Kenny

[ID: the GLs sitting side by side. Kota says “It was a big deal for me. But he didn’t take my hand, at first. So, I thought maybe that it wouldn’t work out. But I didn’t want to give up so easily. I wanted to force him to acknowledge me.” End ID]

he says that he thought they could reunite "because we're the golden lovers" like it was just that simple

the way the lovers talk about each other now that they’re reunited is really something. Kenny tries to put into words what Kota is to him

"The Golden Lovers was always more than just the wrestling. That was real life. And if he just wanted to tag then that was something we would discuss in private [and then talk about to njpw] or I could make a big shpeal of it, make a big scene, give Ibushi a Bullet Club shirt, and it would be a business decision. But to me this was- this was something that had nothing to do with business. This was unrelated to Bullet Club, this was unrelated to the Elite. This was someone that I had cared about for 10 years. Someone that had helped me survive when I was in DDT. Someone that inspired me before I came to Japan.”

Kenny says that trying to change the wrestling world has been a lonely journey, "and there's not many people who can keep the pace. But Ibushi's one of them. [...] Same with the Young Bucks and that's actually why we formed the Elite. And in a way Ibushi is very much an Elite athlete, an Elite professional wrestler and I'm just happy that he's by my side.”

When asked about visiting the young bucks' hotel room, Kota says he’s “not trying to divide” Kenny and his friends. Kenny says that while Kota and the bucks might not be friends, they’re not enemies either, and that he wants badly to make things right

“I value my relationships. I don't have many real friends, but the real friends that I do have I want to cherish…we came to the room as a peace offering, and right now it's complicated, and I hope that with time we can fix that relationship.”

my mind just reminded me I had a dream with hangman in it last night

so. i met my dude at some sort of meet and greet thing and it was like after a new BTE premiered where hangman did a segment and like. u know how silver went on about his ass twice already. well. they had close ups of hangman’s cake. and. i told hangman about the fact that we love his cake and I even make gifs about his cake sometimes

and my guy goes. you should show them to me sometime and I’m like “bet, I’ll tag you in them on twitter” and I remember that the Real Me not Dream Me went “he better fucking reply to it on twitter this time since he NEVER replies to shit I say 🙄” shskskgjdjfkj but Dream Me was like aaaaaahhhhhh me and hangy are besties?!?!<3

anyway and then my alarm woke me up so we will never know whether dream hangman was gonna reply to me or not but the answer is likely No but just know that Dream Me was really hopeful and full of love for this man and really felt like she had a friendship with him by bonding over his cake and also the fact that I make gifs of him

AU where Rimmer and lister are together before Lister goes into stasis.

Lister mentions Rimmer in his “everyone’s dead?” Bit. But under a different feeling. The whole “she was my dream girl. She was in me plans” part would be about rimmer.

Listers reaction when Rimmer shows up as his hologram. But then they can’t touch.

Maybe when they go to the alternate universe where Lister would hook up with himself he hooks up with lady Rimmer? Or still him self but Rimmer is a bit mad, maybe understanding in the long run.

Same for when Rimmer is with Nivara? Rimmer and Lister had been a bit rocky after the twins left. Like most parents who lose kids. Then the whole Nivara thing happens with the holo ship. Part of why Rimmer comes back to the bug is that he realized he my care for and even love Nivara but he loves Lister above all. It also gives him a better perspective of why lister would hookup with deb. Having someone to touch and all, after not being able to touch, it does things to you.

When Rimmer gets his hard light upgrade they have to relearn being together. They hadn’t been together long before stasis and the 3mil years in space. Getting to relearn each other and relearn physically sharing a space together. Also years have passed and they’ve both changed a bit. So they might have to work through that.

When Ace comes to ask Rimmer to take his place they have to have a long talk about it. How the universe needs an Ace and the current one can’t get to another one. So Rimmer leaves even though they finally have each other. Neither is sure if it’s the right choice but they know it’s what the universe probably needs.

Lister misses Rimmer for real after. The episode “blue” would take on new meanings.

Then can you imagine how Lister would feel seeing nano Rimmer? He’s finally more ok with not having his Rimmer and here is his original Rimmer when their relationship was new. Before Lister know everything there was to know about Rimmer. This Rimmer barely even knows Lister really. They’ve only just been going out for a few weeks/months from his view.

BTE would be very different. Maybe Listers happy ending would be to have his original Rimmer back, the one who left to be Ace. But he chooses nano holo Rimmer because of what they’ve built. I’d like to believe that rimmer in BTE and onward is our ace Rimmer. But who knows. I think in the show it’s implied that it’s nano Rimmer.

I imagin starting again with nano Rimmer would be weird and hard but would also be a bit like in the show. Lister doesn’t have any of the baggage from the years of soft light. Not with this Rimmer. So they can almost skip some steps and be closer. Like with their friendship in the show in series 8.

Series X-XII would be true old married couple no mater which Rimmer is present.

The whole Mighty Light and moon/sun stuff from Promised Land would be so sweet too. Rimmer being faced with his being a hologram and what that means to some, it brings up old wounds and insecurities. The moon/sun speech would be more about being in love and all. (Like it’s not already! 😂😉)

Just. You know, a small thought I had.

i can't rb that commentary you did about the best friends dynamic but just t say i 100% agree.

i think people see orange overshadowing best friends but that isnt the case at all? he has always been billed as their "manager", he didnt wrestle for months! chuck is more the leader especially in bte skits and the way he interacts in the ring.

orange is a singles wrestler first and foremost, and chuck is a tag team wrestler. unfortunately chuck's partner is injured, so of course his previous tag partner and "manager" is going to step in while we wait for trent to get back, but he does also have his singles run too!

it isnt orange cassidy taking best friends time at all, they are a faction! he is the singles guy in it, chuck and yuta are the tags at the moment! plus the current feud we can all agree is mediocre at best, i am not surprised they shifted the focus to oc vs matt hardy as that is the only chance they have for people to be interested.

BUT! commentary are constantly putting chuck over these days, calling him athletic and strong. also: he looks happy. he looks stoked to be wrestling. AND it was his idea for the spacesuits, if he was unhappy to support i doubt he would buy all 4 of them matching suits!!!!

he even says so on his stream, he is happy to support oc and kris as it gives him opportunity to be on the PPV for example where he may not have had any chance to.. and these people are his FRIENDS?! he used to fight to get OC booked on indie shows, and now his best friend is so over. he will be proud and happy for the guy, seen constantly by him advertising his merch during the show, wearing it on streams, tweeting matches they are in, his IG posts. i could go on.

at the end of the day, i think some people really just need to admit they do not like OC instead of trying to blame him for the current booking because trent had neck fusion surgery.

100% agree with everything you said. I think the thing about Chuck is that Dustin is an actual leader/ring general type to begin with, he naturally falls into that role and you can see it reflected in the ring. He doesn't get enough credit IMO because he's been in so many big 8, 10 man tag matches in his career and he's so good at keeping track of all the moving pieces on the board and knowing exactly where they are and where they need to be. He truly is a tag wrestler in that regard.

And I do see the other side to an extent, because OC gets to wrestle on Dynamite sometimes and has had a bunch of singles feuds with high profile wrestlers, so I can see where people get the idea that his success comes at the expense of the team. But ultimately one member's success is not bad for the rest of the faction, it's good for them. And Chuck has done a great job of staying relevant without his partner, it's not like he's been going out like Anthony Bowens and wrestling to dead silence lol. I don't think it's that people don't like OC, I just think people have this really weird way of looking at booking where they buy into the kayfabe that everyone is at each other's throats and will stab each other in the back for fame and fortune. When in reality the whole point of the Best Friends gimmick is that they hang out and help each other because they like each other.

But on the topic of the current HFO vs Best Friends feud, I agree it's very meh. It's interesting because TH2 and Best Friends go way back and have wrestled in PWG and stuff plenty of times, so you'd think there would be good chemistry there. But the whole thing feels like it's floundering a lot and making it OC vs Matt definitely seems like a last ditch effort to save it. I think I would have liked to say either BF vs TH2 or BF vs Private Party or BF vs Butcher and Blade. All three makes it a bit confused, especially because on Dark they have a limited amount of time to work with. But I think maybe as Best Friends have got their mojo back some of the HFO have lost it. Like first it was Chuck pulling up his pants every 2 seconds in a match to the point where it was noticeable and broke immersion, and now Jack Evans keeps his shirt on during matches. Like, boys, you're both lookin great, where's that confidence

I think BF as a faction need some really shitty heels to go after them, because the core of their gimmick is that true friendship triumphs over all. But it's hard to get any storyline going without Trent.

Maybe the way Varsity Blondes, Silver, etc. came out to help Jurassic Express and Best Friends could be turned into an angle where Matt Hardy keeps recruiting all the heel tag teams to try and take down Orange Cassidy and his Best Friends, so Chuck just keeps calling on more and more of his old friends from the indies to fight back until you realise that literally everyone is his best friend and they will all do whatever it takes to protect Chuck's son Orange.

Also give me Statlander and Soho vs Bunny and Ford because Soho used to be in Chikara so you know she's friends with Chuck too

i gotta be honest it's really reassuring that there's at least one other person out there who thinks hangman isn't blameless. i feel like the popular thing right now is looking at adam and going "he's never done anything wrong in his life, ever" and tbh that interpretation of his character makes the story sooooo much less interesting

definitely not blameless! I feel like there was an interesting shift for the bucks and hangman post-revolution, where they finally figured out at least some of what he’d been (poorly) trying to tell them this entire time, but they still didn’t quite grasp the concept or understand where the initial hurt had spawned from, nor did they know where to start to make amends (nor was it entirely on them to do so). I think they also didn’t exactly understand the depth of his issues and how far back they went until brandon finally got through to them on bte before the text message incident. I don’t know if they understood just how serious this was to him until brandon was able to explain it and get it all to click. and I mean, all of his issues aren’t their responsibility to begin with. there may be some things they contributed toward making worse, but they weren’t the totality of it all. eventually on bte we started to see them trying to give him his space, maybe hoping he’d come around? it was foolish of them to think this could be water under the bridge but again, I just don’t think they understood how deep these wounds cut. but for adam there was already too much hurt to set aside, and he was deep in his vices and not properly addressing his insecurities and issues (a reoccurring problem for him), nor was he treating anyone with any modicum of respect that would deserve respect back. he was also making a lot of assumptions that everyone saw things the way he did, and not taking the time to think about how they were interpreting everything. which, fair, it’s kind of hard to do that when you’re too wrapped up in your own personal demons. it’s all just a bunch of miscommunication, bruised egos, and hurt feelings that I don’t ever think were intentional on either party until things started blowing up and getting ugly. in the end, I can’t blame the bucks for blowing up on him the way they did in that bar scene with the emotional “we just wanted a friend” speech. they aren’t mindreaders, they couldn’t automatically understand exactly where of all of adam’s anger was coming from, and the more he lashed out with emotions over reason, the more it got their defenses up too. I dunno. I guess I can sort of see their side of things too, and I just see how every single person sort of fucked up in this, adam included, so I’ve never really blamed one particular person for the entirety of it. and to be honest, one of my favorite things about adam’s character is how flawed he is, and the fact that he doesn’t always do the right thing. and when he doesn’t do the right thing it’s driven by those insecurities and god damn if that isn’t relatable as hell.

and yeah if I’m being honest, I would really one day love to see things patched up between the elite. but hey, I’m an elite fan so, makes sense I’d one day hope for that. I look forward to that possibly happening, which is probably why I tend to shut down or go quiet when I see everyone calling for the opposite. I normally just see my way out cause at the end of the day I don’t agree and I also don’t really care to argue. it’s great when there are people who can have those discussions, because I think it’s important since we all process and take in media differently, but unfortunately I’m hardly one of them.

anyways, all that rambling aside, I read this really cool write-up on reddit the other day titled The Tale of the Elite - How the refusal to deal with your issues will destroy every friendship you have and in that the op discussed the flaws of each member of the elite and how each of them not dealing with their personal issues then turned into this big split-up mess we have now. It’s a bit of a read, but I really enjoyed it!
