okay I slept nine hours again last night but it’s fine I’m telling myself that I’m just aggressively resting up now in case the coming semester is super stressful. 11 business days and counting with no reply from the foundation (not even an out of office reply??) which is driving me insane because I have such a limited window of time to do all this fall semester planning if we do indeed move forward with recruiting a new cohort. I am loath to waste these last couple weeks of break revamping the whole syllabus and prepping training materials for a new hire if we’re just going to get a no from the foundation, but I also don’t want september to be a living hell for me if I don’t do the work now while I have the time. agh! I think I’m going to try to use syllabus replanning as a chance to concretely apply what I’m learning from this learning & development research book. that way I can tell myself I’m prepping for my new job by practicing with a real world example, and I can get at least a chunk of the initial work done for the program. okay okay. I can do this.
here’s what I’ve done so far this morning:
I rewrote my learning objectives based on the book’s advice to set aside separately defined abstract goals and focus instead on the practical real world skills that I’ve noticed students need to successfully complete their projects. then I subdivided those complex bundled skills into different sub-skills I’ll need to explicitly teach them + made notes on what type of instruction would be most effective for each one. I have started loosely using that list to plan specific seminars but I am leaving that a bit more open for now… that’s going to be more sustained work.
since we are probably going to have to start a couple weeks behind schedule, I think I’m going to require them to attend a paid one-day weekend retreat where we can do some intensive cohort bonding and lay a foundation for the semester in a more deliberate way. I mapped out a rough schedule for that event.
I downloaded some templates for Asana and Notion to experiment with. I’m going to need to use more structured project management tools this year since I’ll be supervising a grad student employee, so I need to teach myself how to use them + also create replicable templates tailored to our program.
to save time for faculty and to get better recs I think we’re going to use a recommendation form instead requiring a rec letter. I sketched out a very rough version of that form though again will put off actually creating it until we have more info.
I mapped out a calendar of deadlines for august and sent it to my boss, then nudged her to nudge the dean about reaching out to the foundation again today.
I am going to pause program work for a bit and get back to reading my L&D book. I have 70 pages left so I might try to finish it in the next hour or so, depending on how dense the last sections are. then I will take a break and do podcast editing for a bit, as I find it soothing. I think a good strategy for this week is to spend 2-3 focused hours each morning on course prep then firmly set that work aside. that way I can feel like I’m making solid progress but I’m not wholly giving over my last precious weeks of vacation time to work that might not even turn out to be necessary.

Training Part 1
Prompt: Enemies to Lovers type. You and Gibbs never got along, and luckily you never really had to work with each other…until now.
Part 2
You followed behind Agent Fornell as the both of you stepped out of the elevator and into the squad room of NCIS.
You spotted the 3 familiar agents standing in front of the plasma, speaking amongst each other until DiNozzo spoke.
“Trouble on your 6 boss.”
Their supervisory agent turned towards you and Fornell, looking ready for an argument.
“You can release Ramos, we’ll take it from here Gibbs,” Fornell started.
“We’ll release him when we’re done questioning him Tobias. He has ties to our victim and has no alibi for the night of the murder.”
“He’s got nothing to do with your murder. He’s been under FBI surveillance for the last 3 months and if you compromise all of our work, both of us are gonna be on the chopping block with our Directors.”
Gibbs gave him a look that showed that he had no intention of backing down and Fornell sighed before turning to you.
“Stay here. We’ll be back.”
As Gibbs walked past you, you made sure to give him that hard stare that he always gives you every time you see each other. You met Agent Gibbs a few months ago on a joint Investigation and from day one he rubbed you the wrong way. He was stubborn, arrogant and always thought he was right. Even though he was good looking and good with a gun, you weren’t gonna let him intimidate you.
“So how’s it been, being the FBI’s lackey?” DiNozzo jested, making you roll your eyes.
“Better than you being Gibbs’ pet,” you shot right back, getting a snicker out of the Mossad agent behind you.
“You know I heard about that incident with your last case. Suspect got the jump on you. Sounds like your hand to hand combat needs a little work,” he continued.
You walked over, closing in on him, causing him to take a step back. You were at least half a foot shorter than him but judging by the unsure look on his face, your intimidation tactics were on point.
“He was 6,4” and pushing 200lbs DiNozzo. And I didn’t really do much hand to hand with him before putting two bullets in his chest. But by all means, we can put those skills to the test if you want.”
“Stop harassing my agents, Agent Y/N. If you wanna spar, you can do it with me,” you heard Gibbs’ condescending voice speak from the stairs. Looking over, you saw Fornell and him walking over and backed off of DiNozzo who chuckled nervously. You waited until he was standing in front of you to speak.
“Pick a place and time Gibbs.”
Your words held contempt and he just gave you a smirk while taking a sip of his coffee. It took everything in you not to slap it out of his hand. The rest of his agents were quiet as Fornell was smiled in the back.
“NCIS training room, 6pm.”
“I’ll be there.”
You all continued working, the case turning into a joint investigation, you making a point to avoid the Supervisory Agent as much as possible throughout the day. When lunch time came around, you and Fornell stopped by a little sandwich shop.
“So what’s your beef with Gibbs?” he asked you, taking a bite of his pastrami on rye.
“He just thinks he’s so righteous. The way he talks with people, the way he walks, everything about him screams douchebag,” you ranted, Fornell chuckling as you did.
“What?”
“Nothing. It’s just funny. Have you ever thought the reason you don’t like Gibbs is because he’s so much like you? And being the most competitive person I know, you hate having someone that matches you.”
“Don’t profile me Fornell. It’s above your pay grade.”
“See. Like that. Gibbs would’ve said something just like that. Maybe not as harsh but similar. I think you actually like him but don’t know how to deal with it. Maybe this little sparring sesh of yours will prove beneficial.”
You huffed in annoyance at his words but you he wasn’t completely delusional. It did make sense but at the same time, part of you genuinely didn’t like Gibbs.
“Are you trying to set me up with your best friend Tobias?”
He just shrugged his shoulders before stealing a fry off your barely touched plate.
“I’m not trying anything. You challenged him remember? Just one word of advice. He’s got a blind spot just outside his left eye. You use that knowledge correctly and you’ll have him on his ass. Then I can break his balls for the rest of the investigation.”
You both laughed and finished up your lunch before heading back to join NCIS.
————
You were just finished tying your shoes when you saw Gibbs come into the gym. He was wearing an old NIS shirt, some sweat shorts, and black converse. Very casual for someone about to get his ass kicked. You on the other hand, went with some black leggings, sports bra and a loose tank top.
“On the mats, let’s go,” he said in passing.
You followed him to the training mats where he placed a dummy handgun down. There were only 2 or 3 other agents in the room, minding their business with various gym equipment, seemingly none of Gibbs’ minions hanging around.
“Your objective is to not let me get ahold of that gun, understand?”
You just nodded and stood across from him, both of you an equal distance away from the gun.
“Now.”
Both of you ran for the gun, you getting there first and grabbing it. As soon as you brought it up to fake fire, Gibbs knocked it out of your hands, sending it sliding towards the other side of the mats. Before he could make his way to get it, you grabbed a hold of his neck and pulled him down in an attempt to get him to the ground but he just twisted out of it and broke free, giving him plenty of time to grab the gun and aim it at you.
“Dead,” he declared, making you roll your eyes.
“Congratulations Gibbs. Want a medal?”
Keeping a straight face, he walked over to you, eyes never leaving yours and stood a foot away, making you have to tilt your head up because of the height difference. Ok, maybe he was a little intimidating.
“I want you to stop being a brat and let me help you.”
You wanted to spit out something snarky but bit your tongue as he continued. “You’re never gonna win a hand to hand combat with someone much bigger than you based on brute force. Maneuverability and quickness are going to be your best friend.”
He took a step back and dropped the dummy gun.
“I read your file. You spent 2 years training in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. Use those skills. Use the enemies own weight against them. For now, just try to get me to the ground for an arrest.”
You sized him up real quick, identifying his strong and weak points before attacking. You remembered what Fornell had told you earlier and decided to use it. Side stepping to Gibbs’ left side, you grabbed him by the shirt and used your leg to trip him backwards so that he fell to the floor. You wasted no time in climbing on top, getting your legs around his arm and neck before pulling in for a successful armbar. Once he tapped, you let him go and couldn’t help but wear a triumphant smile.
You went to get up but was taken off guard when you felt Gibbs push you back to the ground, grabbing your wrists and twisting them behind your back while sitting atop of your stomach and wrapping his legs around your own so you couldn’t move. You squirmed, hoping to slip free but he had you in a vice grip.
He leaned down so his face was inches from yours, both of you breathing hard from the exercise.
“Never let your guard down,” he whispered. You don’t know if you were more pissed about the fact that he got the drop on you or how turned on you were right then but you weren’t gonna let him win that easy.
He may have had a grip on your hands and legs but that didn’t stop you from pushing your chest up and bringing your head to the side of his, gently caressing his cheek with your mouth. You heard him let out a breath and loosen his grip just the slightest.
That’s all you needed.
Slipping your arms out, you used all your momentum to shift the weight, grabbing the gun that was lying inches away and pointing it at him once you were on top.
“Dead,” you declared the same as he had earlier but with more cockiness.
He chuckled and sat up, leaning back on his hands, licking his lips and looking at you with his head cocked to the side.
“With a little more practice, you could join NCIS.”
You laughed at his joke and took a second to give him a once over. His striking blue eyes, chiseled jawline and boyish grin was actually pretty attractive if you thought about it. In that moment, he didn’t seem like the typical douchebag you pegged him as and it unnerved you.
He didn’t make a move to push you off as you realized you were still straddling him and just held his stare until you looked away.
“I’ll stick with hanging with the big boys, thank you.”
You got to your feet and offered him a hand which he took. Your stomach fluttered just a little as his hands met yours to took the dummy gun from you.
“Look forward to working with you again Agent Y/N.”
You just smiled and turned to leave.
“Goodnight Agent Gibbs.”
As you left the gym, you saw his own smile appear on his lips.

Emily Prentiss saving reader from an unsub and reader just falls into her arms, sobbing in relief?
Tumblr media
ᕚ---ᕘ
In a darkened warehouse in a remote industrial area, the gloomy silence oppressed the air, which was already hard to breathe in due to the thick dust. Emily Prentiss, a supervisory special agent from the Behavioral Analysis Unit, scurried gingerly through the shadowy hallways. Her heartbeat pulsed in her neck vein in harmony with the tension in every fiber of her body. But she had no choice, she was looking for you, a young woman who was the next victim of a notorious serial killer and had potentially been trafficked here.
The dim illumination of the flashlight beneath her drawn weapon bathed the surroundings in a dim light as she lurked and looked around every corner, her weapon tightly gripped in her clammy hands. She had gotten to the middle of the large building when she suddenly heard a faint noise. A stifled whimper under tape or fabric that seemed to come from near an old storage room.
Determined to free you, the black-haired woman moved towards the storage room, her steps deliberate and noiseless. When she reached the door, which was half hanging off its hinges and squeaked gently from the fine blast of air, she listened for a moment before carefully opening it a crack with the barrel of her weapon and shortly afterwards sticking her head through.
Emily's eyes widened in horror and anger as she discovered you tied up and helpless in a dark corner of the room while the suspect, a massive young man with a dark and scowl in his eyes, menacingly approached your powerless body. "FBI! Raise your hands above your head where I can see them!" she shouted with a strong authority in her gravelly voice, her gun unlocked and aimed squarely at the back of the man's head.
The suspect abruptly turned away from you and towards her, a devilish grin on his thin lips, only now did she noticed the shiny silver in his hands. "Agent Prentiss. You're too late to save this pretty thing. She'll be my next trophy and you'll get to watch so it eats you up inside that you couldn't save her in time."
Emily, however, remained calm, her eyes sparkling with determination to free you from the clutches of this monster and get you to safety. “Put the knife down and slowly step away from the woman,” the man in front of her just laughed scornfully and looked back at you for a second. You tried to squeeze yourself deeper into the corner, the look in his eyes deadly. You were panicking. You were afraid for your life. "You won't get in my way, Prentiss. Last time you interfered with my plans and the woman got away. But not this time,"
With a quick movement, he tightened the knife in his hand and rushed towards her, ready to attack and hurt her. But the agent reacted quickly and, as she had learned, ducked skillfully to the side and fired three shots, which, due to her sway in her balance, hit the ground just next to the attacker. The man flinched and frightened for a moment, but his resolve to stop her from saving you seemed undiminished.
In an all-too-quick turn of events, he leapt forward from his crouched position towards her, knife raised high, forcing Emily into an intense hand-to-hand combat. She couldn't use her pistol from such close range. The risk was too high, even for an experienced shooter like her, to hit you and injure or even kill you with one shot. However, her hand-to-hand combat training and experience gave her the advantage over him, but the man was a fierce opponent who would not let go of her until he got what he wanted.
A quick slash of the knife cut the skin above the collarbone, but the agent gritted her teeth and withstood him, her determination to save you unwavering. In a strong counterattack, she cleverly turned to face her, took advantage of the man's open attack area and brought him down, along with herself. She overpowered him and now sat on his thighs, forcing him to drop the knife by grabbing his upper arm and hitting it multiple times on the cold concrete floor before she secured him with handcuffs.
Emily was breathing heavily, the pain in her shoulder was throbbing and the blood was flowing down her dark blue blouse, but her eyes quickly darted to you, who was still cowering in fear in the corner. She quickly freed you from the restraints, pulled the tape from your mouth and hugged you protectively while you fell into her strong arms, sobbing in relief. She was desperately trying to calm you down with gentle words. "It's over, sweetie. You're safe."
More police sirens and their team approached their position in the warehouse as Emily, continuing to ignore her sore shoulder, carefully led you out of the darkness. You shivered uncontrollably in her arms as the cold night air enveloped you, but you also felt a soothing warmth as you clung to your rescuer.
The emotions that overwhelmed you and dragged every fiber of your body into a deep quagmire left you struggling to breathe, and tears began to stream inexorably down your cheeks. Emily pulled you closer to her, feeling the tremble on the side of her body and your pulse beating wildly in your arms as she held you gently. "It's over. You're safe and nothing can happen to you anymore."
Her words were a distant echo in your head as you sobbed desperately, the weight of fear and agony of the last day released in an overwhelming torrent of tears. Your legs felt weak, like you couldn't take another step, but Emily supported you gently, her presence like an anchor in the middle of a violent storm at sea.
The environment around you seemed to fade and you were unsure of your voice, however a few words came out quietly between the sobs, barely audible but full of gratitude and deep relief that Emily had saved you. "Thank you, Agent Prentiss. Thank you for helping me. I thought I would never get out of there alive again."
"That's my job, sweetie. I loved doing it," Emily hugged you gently again, her own heart heavy with compassion. She stroked your back soothingly while a gentle kiss touched your hair. "You've been brave and now you're here and I'm with you. It's over."
The minutes passed as you slowly came out of shock and regained your composure. Your breaths became deeper and slower, your heart calmed and its pulse rate normalized. Emily continued to hold you gently in her arms by the ambulance steps, supporting you until your tears stopped and you were assessed by the paramedics. “Can I go home please?” You murmured in a shaky voice, looking up at her, your eyes red and tired.
The agent nodded gently and stood, lending you a hand to hold you before leading you to her car that was parked nearby. You felt exhausted but also relieved as you sank into the passenger seat of the car, Emily standing by your side.
The drive to your home was filled with a calming silence as Emily made sure to bring you cheerfully back to your family. Only when she sat down on the top steps of your family home and convinced herself that you were safe from now on and were being looked after by trustworthy hands did she leave the house. But not without giving you her private number first so you could call her when you needed someone to talk to.

Sunsets and footballers (Part 36)
Lucy Bronze x Reader (34)
Masterlist (other parts here)
YFN enjoyed her morning and flight back, still trying to comprehend what was happening. She’d wished she had time to go through Edinburgh itself but had been swamped all morning with emails relating to the expansion of staff. Lumos management were also a lot more vocal with her now that they’d all met and decided she should be directly involved with their meetings and decisions.
Once she’d landed, she’d Ubered to her and Jordan’s house to pick up Miles and give Blu a pat before she drove to the conference room in town. She’d arrived just after midday and was delightfully pleased to see the entire team was already there with canapes just working and bantering away. She greeted them all as she entered and as she walked to her seat, she realised there were a large bunch of flowers sitting in her space. She was a little confused. Was this from Catherine? From the team for the first round? From the hotel the conference room was in? She looked around for an explanation and only received a few grins in response. She gently touched one of her flowers and leant in to smell them before taking the card out of the top.
Hi little one,
Well done on your first round of women’s football!
I’m so proud of you, always, in everything that you do.
I can’t wait to see you soon in Spain.
I love you.
Lucy x
She blushed as her heart fluttered, again finding a few of those grins, yet now they were teasing. She didn’t mind being teased for it. She was proud of her relationship with Lucy. She moved the flowers more central in the table and took her seat, setting up her laptop and notes before sending a quick photo and text to Lucy.
She knew they had a lot to cover and made sure to text Jordan, asking for a heads up when she was headed home. She wanted to be there for her. She put her phone on the table and they began. They spoke about the first round, each team member talking about their experiences and ideas. They spoke about the interviews, the posts, the equipment, all of it. When they were done, YFN made sure they were all comfortable and confident with their roles and then dropped the bombshell. They were expanding. Already. She told them how happy and ambitious management were. They’d expanded from ten including YFN to fifty. This was a shock to everyone of course, however YFN managed to ease them.
“Fifty?!” Ruby almost yelled. “How much money does this company have?!”
“The company has a lot of faith in us…and they were very impressed with the first round.”
“But that’s mainly because your interviews were amazing…” Ethan countered.
“No, we all did amazing work.” Bridget disagreed.
“Fifty sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t,” she assured. “We have six games a week. Fifty is our new number so that we can have three videographers, three photographers, one editor and one interviewer per game. That’s forty-eight people. The extras will be Noel for IT as our posting and editing becomes even more sizeable, and myself.”
They thought this was definitely a lot more reasonable when it was put like that.
“Management are throwing money into us to not only expedite the process of growth, but to make sure we’re training and preparing for the international fixtures as well,” she explained. “We won’t just be doing WSL the entire time. Plus, there are the other leagues in Europe, and the other minor leagues in the UK.”
“But the training…” Emily almost whispered.
YFN nodded, running a hand through her hair a little stressed. “Oh, trust me, I know. We need to be fully prepped and confident for our games so we make the mistakes in practise rather than onsite.”
“Prior planning prevents piss poor performance.” Sam quoted.
“Exactly and I have a plan for that. Now we’re all new here but we’ve all been in the field, we’ve researched and prepped and decided on how to best create a product that suits our brand image. It’s because of this that my plan is to have you all in supervisory roles for the new team coming in. The new hires will arrive next Tuesday which gives us time to prep with them prior to our third round. I’ll put you into game groups and you can work together to prep during the week, with this group supervising each game group and taking a bit more responsibility. Teach them what you’ve learnt. Next week is going to be a long week, but we can do it. I’ll expect progress reports also as I can’t monitor fifty people. If someone is excelling, or not quite up to scratch, I expect to be told so we can sort it out prior to our game. Also…” she looked around the conference room. “…we’ve just acquired an office space in London. I understand that not everyone will live there, and I just want to state that when we’re up and running more comfortably, the people who live further away will be able to zoom our meetings instead if they choose. In the meantime, we’ll continue with our face to face meetings, though don’t neglect yourselves. If it becomes too hard to travel; let me know. We’re going to have enough people to cover each other, it’s okay.”
The rest of the meeting was fairly better as YFN had decided they would only start to worry about the new hires later on. Right now, it was about prepping for the next games.
Their schedule set out for the upcoming week was as such:
Man United vs West Ham (Leigh Sports Village, Manchester): 12th Nov 1200 – YFN and Ruby.
Spurs vs Liverpool (Brisbane Road, London): 12th Nov 1230 – Sam and Olivia.
Everton vs Chelsea (Walton Hall Park, Liverpool): 12th Nov 1300 – Ethan and Daniel.
Man City vs Brighton (Joie Stadium, Manchester): 12th Nov 1300 – Bridget and Emily.
Bristol vs Aston Villa (Ashton Gate Stadium, Bristol): 12th Nov 1400 – Matt and Noel.
Leicester vs Arsenal (King Power Stadium, Leicester): 12th Nov 1845 – YFN and Ruby (relocate from United vs West Ham); Matt (relocate from Bristol vs Aston Villa in Bristol est arrival: 1900).
The scheduling was tight because all of the games were on the same day, and she needed to be carefully logistically to make sure she didn’t have people driving out of their way unnecessarily. Luckily, Matt lived in Birmingham and would be able to get to the Leicester vs Arsenal game for YFN to get some good interviews of the players, one she was hoping would be Kyra and Courtney.
Before she knew it, the clock had ticked over to 5pm and Jordan had messaged.
Dory: Training just finished. I’ll be home in 20.
YFN: I’m coming. I’ll get take-away for us. What would you like, Dory?
Dory: Anything I’m not supposed to eat.
YFN: You’re amazing. See you at home soon, roomie x
YFN walked through the front door, pizza in one hand and flowers tucked under the other arm, her work bag slung over her shoulder. Regardless of this, Jordan was on her from the moment she opened the door, wrapping arms around YFN’s waist. After a cute little hug, YFN spoke when she felt Jordan getting emotional.
“Okay, firstly, I love you. Secondly, we’re eating before we talk. We need to get this comfort food into you before it goes cold.”
They settled onto the couch and devoured the pizza quickly, having to snatch it away from Blu at times. Then, Jordan spoke.
“I’m so embarrassed.”
“Why? For having sex with someone you love? Someone who knows you and loves you too?”
“I guess it does sound better when you say it like that…”
“What happened? Tell me everything.”
Jordan sighed. “We dropped you off and came back home. We didn’t speak much in the car. She put her hand on my thigh, but I think it was more of a reassurance thing than a sexual thing. Then we spoke when we got home. I did exactly what you said, I sat far away so I wouldn’t be tempted by anything. She said the nicest things, YFN.” Jordan began to cry. “How much she loved me and missed me and how badly she’d screwed up. I couldn’t help myself, I cried and I couldn’t stop. I tried to hold it together. She comforted me and…” She put her hand on the back of the couch, presumably where they’d been sitting.
“Did you have sex right here?”
Jordan’s tears paused as she gave a cheeky, embarrassed smile.
“Ooookay I’m going to pretend I didn’t ask.” She reached out and brushed some of Jordan’s tears away. “Was it…bad?”
“No,” she admitted. “No, it was incredible. Probably the best sex I’ve had in my life. It was so desperate and passionate. I don’t know what happened, I missed her touch, I just melted.”
“Ah…and you cried after it?”
“No, I cried during it. It felt so good and to have her back so close to me. I missed her so much, YFN. I think after we’d been…doing it a while…the lust faded a little, and I just got scared. Scared that she made me feel so happy, made me feel so loved and then I got scared she’d leave again. I panicked and cried. She didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to do. I told her to go.”
“She tried to stay?”
“Yeah of course but I was just a mess, I needed to be alone.”
YFN hesitated. “You pushed her away before she could leave you…”
“Is that what I did?” She whispered.
“Oh Dory, come here.” YFN pulled Jordan into her lap and wrapped her arms around her, stroking her supportively. YFN and Jordan were both very, very affectionate people, especially physically.
“I don’t know if I can trust her again. I th…thought I c…could.” Her crying increased and she clung to the front of YFN’s shirt.
“Did you tell her why you wanted her to go?”
“That’s the worst part…she begged me to stay. She was on her knees at one point. On her ACL torn knee…but I couldn’t look at her. I wanted her to go. I knew she had a long drive back to London. I knew it was late. I still kicked her out.” She shook her head. “She begged me all the way out of the door to explain what was happening. I just remember telling her, “I can’t handle you leaving me again.””
YFN’s stomach dropped for Leah. She finally got close to Jordan again. Close enough for sex. For intimacy. She must have been so happy…and in a split second it was all taken away from her because of that insecurity she’d planted in Jordan with her previous mistake.
“It’s okay…it’s okay. Leah will understand, trust me. Has she messaged you?”
Jordan nodded into her. “She’s sent me multiple messages since.”
“And have your feelings changed?”
“That fear of her leaving? It’s not going away anytime soon.”
“I think she needs to win your trust back. You two made a mistake by diving into sex.”
“I know,” she whispered quietly. “I couldn’t help myself.”
“You need to let her know that if she wants you, she needs to build that trust back. She needs to know that it may take a long time but it’ll be worth it because she’ll get to have you back.”
Jordan nodded. “You’re right…”
“If I’ve learnt anything over the past few days it’s that communication is key…”
“I just need a little space.”
“Okay…look, I’ll be at the Arsenal game on Sunday in Leicester. I’ll talk to her if you want? Explain a little…”
“I think that’s for the best.”
“Okay, I think you should message her asking for your space for the moment.”
“Can you do it?”
“I think this one is best coming from you, Jords.”
She sighed but took her phone out and texted Leah without reading the messages the other woman had sent her.
“You won’t be at the Aston Villa game this week?”
YFN shook her head. “No, I’ll be covering Untied vs West Ham and then Leicester vs Arsenal.”
“But aren’t you going to Spain?”
She ran a hand through her hair. “Yeah…I was planning on going Friday. Lucy has a game Saturday and then I’d fly back for the Sunday games.”
“You’re not staying for long, then? Lucy’s going to be upset.”
“I know,” she sighed. “I know, I planned on doing zoom for my meetings next week, but we’ve just expanded our employees by five hundred percent.”
“What the-”
“Oh, please don’t ask anything. I’m stressed and besides, tonight is all you, Jords. I think a phone call with Lucy and then with Katie and Caitlin may be just what you need, hm?”
Jordan agreed. “Yes, please! I’ll get rid of this rubbish and get us drinks while you message them.”
YFN opened her phone, hovering her finger above Lucy’s message before she remembered their phone call from last night. She bit her lip as she opened Instagram. Sure enough, the first posts were of Lucy boxing and YFN could feel her skin getting hot, and she squirmed as she also felt herself getting wet for her. God damn. Lucy. Those biceps. Lucy. That determined look. Lucy. She groaned.
“You okay?” Jordan asked from the kitchen.
“Yeah!” She called back and liked the post. She considered commenting and decided against that. She was worried how forward she would be in front of Lucy’s 750k followers.
YFN: Hey Luce, are you free for a call with Dory?
Lucy: Hi, little one. I’ve been waiting for your text. I smile when your name pops up on my phone. Yes, I’m free whenever you want me.
YFN: I always want you. And you’re always busy.
Lucy: Lies.
Jordan passed her a drink over the couch and she took a sip.
Lucy: Come to Spain and fuck the busy out of me.
She choked on her drink. Jordan gave her a look before she rolled her eyes as she made her own drink.
YFN: Behave. I’m barely hanging on with your Instagram posts.
Lucy: I hoped you’d like them…can we have a late-night call tonight when you’re free?
YFN: Yes, please.
It’s crazy how naturally they fell into teasing each other. She sent another message to the messenger with Katie, Caitlin and Jordan.
YFN: Hi! Are you all free for a group call with Dory and I in the next hour or so?
Caitlin: KEEN.
Katie: Only if we see your faces.
YFN: Done. I’ll message you soon!
Jordan joined her on the couch then and she called Lucy, giving Jordan the phone. Obviously, Jordan had Lucy’s number, but this was more convenient. She watched as the two old friends spoke, Lucy not failing to make Jordan grin and laugh. Of course she could. At one point they were even speaking about her, and YFN rolled her eyes, working a little on her laptop while they had their talk.
Their talk ended after about forty minutes, Jordan hanging up before YFN could talk to Lucy. She frowned. Lucy immediately texted.
Lucy: Call me in bed?
YFN: Okay, I’ll be about an hour, love. Thank you for that, she really needed it. You managed to cheer her up a lot.
Lucy: I know her too well. You’re welcome, though. Talk soon. x
YFN messaged the girls back then telling them to call whenever they were free. Apparently, that was immediately. Jordan and YFN on one end, Katie and Caitlin on the other. It was a hilarious conversation after Jordan had been honest about what happened with Leah to them. They’d given her support and told her to take her time which reassured her a little bit more. Katie had changed the mood of the conversation after that by introducing Coopurr by holding the cat up to the camera. Jordan responded in kind with Blu, of course. Then Caitlin surprised her fellow Australian with a question.
“Hey chicken, do you know what’s happening with Kyra? She’s been a bit off and we figured you might know…”
YFN hesitated. She didn’t want to keep anything from them, but knew it wasn’t her place. “Uh…yeah…it’s not really my place to say though…”
Katie turned to Caitlin. “I told you.”
“You were right,” Caitlin rasped. “It’s about Courtney then.”
They watched as YFN practically glued her mouth shut. Of course they knew. Courtney was a Matilda. Caitlin was a Matilda.
“Is that why you’re coming to our game now?”
“Oh, that's right! You two were so obvious when Kyra asked what game you were going to.”
“Mmnhmn. Yeah, look, all I can say is that I plan on interviewing them together. We’re going to start interviewing players in groups more, and also interviewing opposition together. So this weekend I’ll do a young interview with those two if I can catch Courtney, and then I’ll do an-”
“An old person interview? Rude.” Caitlin laughed.
YFN rolled her eyes. “You know what I mean.”
“Yeah, we’re happy to do an interview with you, but I assume you want someone you haven’t talked to yet?”
“Yeah, you know, I was thinking Kim or…” She stopped herself as she looked at Jordan.
Jordan frowned. Leah. There was a moment of silence.
“That’s okay, you know.” Jordan reassured. YFN gave a grateful smile.
“…or Jen Beattie?”
“Are you in those little sleeping shorts of yours?” Lucy asked.
“Yes,” she almost whispered.
Lucy hummed. “Good. Take them off.”
YFN did as she was told, wriggling them off and turning back to her phone propped up against Lucy’s pillow.
“Shirt too.”
She pulled her shirt off, now fully bare beneath the sheets besides her socks. Lucy knew she loved her socks, though.
“I wish you could understand how much I want you right now.” She said a little exasperated.
“Tell me…” She whispered, looking at Lucy through the camera. She allowed herself to begin playing with one of her nipples and Lucy noticed, groaning.
“If you could feel between my thighs, you’d know just how much I miss you.”
“I can’t stop thinking about you…I can’t seem to get you out of my mind.”
“Good.” She said almost harshly. “That’s where I belong. Inside your mind. Inside you. Now I need you to touch yourself. I need your hands to do what I wish mine were right now.”
“Guide me where you want me, Luce.”
“Put your free hand around your throat. Good girl. Squeeze a little. Argh…yes. You like that, hm? Two days and that’ll be my hand.”
“God I need you, Luce.”
“I have no idea how I didn’t fuck you silly the other night.”
“Because you love me,” she whispered, her hand moving down over her body and under the sheets. She knew Lucy would enjoy that visual.
“Did I tell you to do that?”
YFN paused. “No…”
“Hm.”
“Can I…?” She trailed off as she saw Lucy’s darkened eyes through the screen.
“Use your words, love.”
“Can I touch myself?”
“Yes, but don’t go inside. Not yet.”
She felt through the wetness of her body, not realising just how ready she was. She was tempted to slip a finger in, but Lucy told her she couldn’t just yet, and so she didn’t. Her fingers found her little bundle of nerves and began to play.
“That’s my girl,” Lucy groaned. “T…that’s my girl. Feel that.”
Lucy stuttering a little was proof to her that she was also touching herself. Her eyes rolled back at the thought and her body was twitching and getting tingly at the stimulation of her clit. They worked themselves up like that for a while, both moaning and shakily breathing. Hearing Lucy losing control was one of her favourite things. She just wished she were right there, rather than across a phone.
“Luce, c…can I go inside?”
“Tell me who you belong to.”
She bit her lip and her back arched at the question, her fingers speeding up. She whimpered. “You, Luce. I belong to you.”
“Yes, you do. Don’t you ever fucking forget that. Two fingers inside, now.”
YFN eagerly thrust two fingers inside herself, her body jerking and her legs automatically widening.
“I want to hear you.”
YFN released one of her nipples to drag the phone down and place it on her left thigh. She could hear Lucy groaning from the other end. She threw the sheet off so she could hear her better.
“God, you have no idea what you do to me,” she repeated. “I’m so lucky to have you.”
“I’m yours, Luce. And I…I’m the l…lucky one.” She had no idea how she managed to get the sentence out. She was so wound up, her body arched into her hand, hips automatically thrusting against her fingers.
“I want you to come like this, fucking yourself. Don't move the phone, I want to hear it.”
YFN did as she was told, and sped up her assault, her body becoming a shaky, uncontrolled mess. It didn’t take long for her to get right to that edge, and she could hear Lucy getting closer. Lucy wasn’t very vocal, that was something they were still working on, however her moaning and panting betrayed her. She was close. She just needed to be tipped over the edge. So YFN gave her that.
“Arghh…Luce…Lucy…can I come?”
She knew asking permission would be Lucy’s last straw.
“Y…yes,” she gasped. “Come.”
YFN sped up her efforts once more as her body unfolded and that electric shock of ecstasy shocked her body into a tense spasm. She heard Lucy whimpering on the other end of the phone and that just made it last longer.
She let herself come down and reached for a tissue near the bed to wipe herself clean. She took the phone and put it back up near her face as she rolled to the side and looked at her girlfriend. Lucy pushed the glasses up her nose, giving a satiated grin. She couldn’t help but return her own.
“This is becoming a regular thing for us.” YFN said.
“I need this just to be able to think during the day about something other than fucking you.”
“Ah, but I thought you liked thinking about me.”
Lucy laughed incredulously. “Yes, but I also have a profession I should be thinking about. Mapi managed to kick a ball into me today while I was zoned out thinking about how good you look under me.”
The visual was hilarious. “You’re insatiable.”
“It’s never been a problem until you. I feel like I’m losing a battle of urges.”
“Keep talking, please, you’re making me feel very loved right now.”
Lucy laughed and YFN continued. “But if it’s any consolation, I also can’t stop thinking about you. The one time I managed to not, was when I was walking into my meeting but then I saw your flowers…”
Lucy grinned. “You liked them? I thought it’d be romantic.”
“Oh, it was. And just so you know, your surprise will be there tomorrow also.”
Lucy’s eyes widened with excitement. “You sent me something?!”
“Last night. I just wanted you to know that I sent it BEFORE I received your flowers.”
“Who’s the romantic one, now?”
“You, always you. I may be a romantic, but I’ll never have anything on you, Luce.”

Welcome to Spider Society -
A mega-post of my headcanons and (very) loose analysis of Spider Society and How It Works - like day to day. Or rather, how it works for recruits.
I'll be looking at things like dorms, contracts, mentors and more. [All of these are my headcanons really, so take what you like and leave what you don't.]
Recruitment - Your First Days At HQ
Learning about the multiverse can without a doubt be a jarring experience for some - And a new recruit's first days at HQ are usually no different.
Day One - First Contact
Based on the scenario, recruitment can happen one of two ways - each with different procedures based on the situation. Merit Recruit - Merit recruits are Spider-people approached on the grounds of merit, experience, or distinction. Spider-people from especially unique worlds, or those with extensive experience are approached by the Spider Society and extended an official invitation to join. Each potential recruit is profiled based on a number of things, including mental stability, talent, personality, or need. A potential recruit is then matched with an active member - an a first contact is organized. Potential Recruits are algorithmically matched with a Spider-person most likely to successfully recruit them - based on personality, emotional connection potential, and a host of other things. Pavitr Prabhakar, Peter B. Parker, and Hobie Brown are all Merit Recruits. Merit Recruits are more likely to bargain contracts, in order to enter the society at a high rank, or receive more perks. Hobie has bargained his contract for limited days - and he is only called for high profile missions. Other recruits cannot negotiate contacts, but Hobie hopes to unionize and change that.
Supervisory Recruit - A Supervisory Recruit is a Spider-person who is profiled and approached based on their 'need' or a growing concern for the situation of their universe. This mostly includes those from dystopian universes, experiencing their 'Public Enemy' Canon Event, or going through financial hardship. Although this also includes a small class of 'Critical Destabilization' Recruits - Spider-people from universes experience anomalies, or multiversal decay. Although approached as a Merit Recruit - Pavitr's file is now labeled as a Critical Destabilization member. Those with a 'CD' designation typically live in dorms as their worlds are closely monitored. CD Spider-people are deeply 'encouraged' to complete as many Canon Events as possible, in order to avoid possible anomalies.
Educational Recruit - Although rare, there are a small number of Educational Recruits - members approached based on their own educational research of the multiverse. If it is determined that a Spider-person has learned about the multi-verse on through their own research, the Society will make direct contact with them as soon as possible. Only a few high-ranking members are chosen to approach Educational Recruits - ready to answer any scientific questions they may have. Educational Recruits take seniority over Merit Recruits, and are also able to negotiate contracts - including access to Society technology. There is also a small academics program in which incoming Educational Recruits can study under other Genius Spider-people. They're trained in The Society Laboratory to develop new technologies and studying the multiverse. Most Educational Recruits are do not work in the field. Margo Kess is an Educational Recruit and is an early graduate of the academics program. Her job at the Go-Home Machine was negoitated in her contract.
Emergency Recruit - Emergency recruits are those who join the society through an Active Call. Contact is made with the recruit in order to prevent or capture anomalies, and treat multiversal decay. Emergency Recruit's experience an extended introduction period, in which they are emotionally monitored and treated before meeting Miguel and continuing on to their Evaluations. Emergency Recruits live on campus in separate private dorms in order to help with the shock. Gwen is an Emergency Recruit.
Next comes your Evaluations.
Evaluations
One of the most intense parts of joining Spider Society is often the evaluations. Because there are a LOT of them. Still recruits, incoming members take a number of evaluations and tests before becoming trainees. There's no way to fail these tests, but they're lengthy, and the data is used for a number of things, known and unknown
Week 1 - Your First Tests
After a contract is negotiated and a recruit accepts their invitation, the recruit is sent home with some materials in order to process what they've just learned. They're given a date and a time for them to return to meet their mentor and take their evaluations. These evaluations usually take a couple of days and so some may say in the dorms for the duration of this. Their original recruitment member will return to meet the recruit and take them back to HQ - and this is usually a time to bond and ask questions. Your recruitment officer is not the same as your mentor, instead they are someone you are mathematically chosen to get along with most. But how do they determine that? -
Your first evaluation at HQ starts before you even notice. Conversation With Lyla - Personality Analysis Prior to meeting Miguel for the second time, the recruit is asked to sit in the lab Gwen and Miles are shown walking through, and wait for Miguel. During this time, Lyla will appear on the console, and make light conversation with the new recruit. In doing so she begins her first analysis on the recruits humor, confidence, comfortability, extrovertedness, assertiveness, and a number of other things. With this, she begins to construct a profile. This conversation may last somewhere between 4-8 minutes - in which Miguel is given a report on you. Lyla is programmed to make the conversation as light as possible, as the participant should not be aware at the time of the test. Only a few have been able to recognize this tactic for what it is. Hobie being one of them. After questioning Lyla as to what she was, when she explained she was an AI - he stopped talking and refused to speak to her any further at that time. This raised his bargaining price with Miguel immensely. Event Screening - Moral Alignment Analysis Assigned by Lyla, A recruit's moral alignment is a profile taken by Lyla at the beginning of their contract, and annually every year after. Arguably the most time-consuming and tedious of the evaluations. Scenario Screening: A Recruit is seated in a lab with Lyla once more. Lyla shows the recruit a number of semi-realistic scenarios in an immersive simulation - similar to the ones Miguel shows Miles. Recruits are asked to respond to each scenario out loud and explain their reasoning, with Lyla making it as conversational as possible. However, this information is not taken at face value. During this conversation Lyla crossmatches. Career Screening: As you go through the Scenario Screening, Lyla will ALSO crossmatch your answers to past events in your career, pulled from sources like news television, and Daily Bugle reports in order to determine if what you are saying is true to your behavior. Both of these reports are combinded to determine truthfulness, self-awareness, selflessness, spontaneity and a number of other factors. This too is added to your file. A Session with Spider-Psyche - Mental Health Analysis Most people hate this part. The last evaluation is a three-session stint with a Spider-Psyche across three different days. During this time, your mental health will be evaluated, as the therapist begins to ask questions related to your canon events. In doing this, your events will be added to your file. This evaluation determines a recruit's mental stability, past traumas, and - hopefully - help determine their canon events in the future. The mental health analysis is due every six months - for every Spider person on campus. It's mandatory. The mental health center is robust, and appointments are easy to get. There is also a Post-Canon Crisis Center and multiple talk groups open for attendance.
Mentorship
Week 2, Day 1 - Meeting your mentor
Now that Lyla has a full profile of the recruit, they official become a member of the Society, earning their entry level badge - a card that gives access to the food court, showers, and other facilities.
As Lyla combines your evaluations into your file - she uses your Moral Alignment, Personality, and Mental Stability to assign you to an senior advisor to report to.
Mentors are responsible for Mission statuses, training updates, and a number of other things - depending on the recruit type and their needs.
There are many mentors on campus, including Ben Reilly, Lego-Spider-Man (for the non-human Spidey-people), Peter B. Parker, SunSpider, and some others.
Typically, a recruitment agent is a mentor in training. Had Hobie stayed in The Society, he would have achieved Mentor status.
First meeting: Largely determined by the mentor's preferred teach method, the first meeting with your mentor is fully determined by them. And some do not give a heads-up. It's encouraged that mentors visit their trainee's home dimension and/or join them on patrol. Mostly because next week, when you begin training, your mentor's report on you will determine your starting level and skillset. The Following Days: Second & Third Meeting Mentors are also encouraged to take and train their trainees in their own home world - for the trainee to get accustomed to blending in and working out there in the multiverse field. During the third meeting, Trainees are often given a tour of the facilities. Most mentors use this as a time to talk - mainly at the food court - in order to gauge their new trainee's skills, likes, goals, and needs. Report of Status and/or Need: Submitted by the end of Week 2 By the end of Week 2 your mentor will submit a report on you and their thoughts, as well as details on your experience, strengths, and skills. They will also determine things like your category - a descriptor of your fighting and battle techniques. There a nearly a dozen classes of category ranging from 'Speedsters' (Disco-Spider and Brown-Spider), to Wielders (those who wield extra weapons in addition - i.e Spider-Punk). You can fall into two or more categories at once - and your category is a large factor in your selection in particular missions. This entire status report - along with their full file and evaluations - is submitted directly to Miguel, not Lyla. And he reads each and every file. Miguel also requests a Report of Need if neccesary - detailing any struggles - financial, safety, or otherwise, that a trainee may need. For non-emergency recruits, this is also the time to sign up for dorms. In accordance with this report, Mentors must report HOW they're helping their trainee and their progress in need. For example, if a Spider-person is facing eviction or behind on rent, The Society will offer housing aid to assure they can keep their home, and they will continually check in to assures it stays this way. Once again, every one of these reports is screen by Miguel personally. (i.e Jessica is required by this rule to report how many days Gwen has slept on campus each month - as apart of her 'Need Relief Report'. Gwen got in trouble multiple times for spending under the required amount, during her time sleeping at Hobie's.)
Mentor Reports:
Mentors are required to give routine Training and Development Reports routinely - the frequency based on their time with The Society, starting at weekly and decreasing from there.
Personal Report:
You and your mentor may fill out a personal report, either together or by yourself.
This is to detail your feelings as needs as a new member, what you'd like changed, what you need, etc. This can range from anything from needing to set up Spider-psyche appointments, an increase in meal plan, or special accommodations.
Merit and Educational Recruits also fill out a Report of Perks & Benefits, in which they request things like entry into the Education program, private rooms, suit upgrades, and more.
Contract Negotiation: MERIT and EDUCATIONAL only
During this time, Trainees can now negotiate their contracts fully - outside of the Perks & Benefits, though taking more than usual is hard to get out of Miguel. But possible.
This negotiation is a personal sit down with Miguel, your mentor, you and Lyla. Your recruitment advisor can also be present for this as your second rep (besides your menton). After this, their contract is solidified.
Hobie, for example has negotiated a limited amount of mission calls per monthly cycle, earning his file the label of Class S, only reserved for high-level missions cleared by Lyla. Your class is another designation besides your category, however this is determined after Week 3 - your Training Week. Get ready to meet the training rooms and coaches!
___________________________________________ So yeah, that's how I imagine the first week of The Society is like. Based on.... :) haha mmm
But this is all just complete headcanon of how I imagine it - based on things like how I imagine Lyla works or mission teams are form and other stuff.
In my head Hobie, Gwen, Diane, and all Spider-sonas had to go through this lol
Um this was fun if you read this far I really appreciate it!!!! So take this photo of Hobie and uhhh....uhmm uh

Men have such little emotional intelligence it’s insane. My boss was talking to me about an employee that he clocked as “paranoid”, (somehow,) and is getting on his nerves because she doesn’t want to discuss her career progression with him in front of other people and keeps telling him “I don’t think I’m ready” when he meets with her about promotions, to which he responds “I don’t care, I’m gonna promote you anyway”. He then added he especially doesn’t get it because after her previous manager refused to promote her and held her back, she should be chomping at the bit to finally get ahead. What is she so suspicious about with him?
I gently suggested that she probably has very little self confidence after being singled out and bullied by her previous manager and believes she is not capable. I suggested next time he meets with her he should make sure to add in an “I’m confident you’re ready” since that’s what he thinks. He was absolutely gobsmacked at my apparently miraculous insight into the inner workings of her mind and was like “wow, that’s a great piece of supervisory advice. They should have taught that in my supervisor training”
????????
you’ve got to be shitting me, jerry.

Ronald Anthony Burgos-Aviles, Texas inmate 02456398, born 1989, incarceration intake July 2023 at age 33, sentenced to life
Capital Murder
Relatives of Grizelda Hernandez and little Dominic Alexander Hernandez burst into tears upon hearing the sentence of life in prison without parole awarded by the jury in the double murder trial of Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Ronald Anthony Burgos-Aviles on Monday in the 49th Court before Judge Joe Lopez.
In July 2023, relatives of Grizelda Hernandez and little Dominic Alexander Hernandez burst into tears upon hearing the sentence of life in prison without parole awarded by the jury in the double murder trial of Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Ronald Anthony Burgos-Aviles in the 49th Court before Judge Joe Lopez.
Lopez then read the two capital murder charges and the result for each one was term of life without possibility of parole.
"Your sentence will start immediately," Judge Lopez said.
The trial for this case began on June 26, five years after the murders were committed.
More than 20 witnesses including relatives, friends, law enforcement agents and forensic experts were called to testify on behalf of the prosecution.
The testimonies revealed the alleged presence of Burgos-Aviles at Father McNaboe Park the day and time the double homicide was committed, his participation in reporting the crime, the lack of care in preserving the crime scene, and a DNA study that proved him to be the biological father of little Dominic, among other information that will help the jury determine the defendant's innocence or guilt.
The District Attorney said that Burgos-Avilés took advantage of his skills and his training as a law enforcement agent to carry out the perfect crime in a brushy area.

A/N: Here we come to the end of yet another story. Thanks once again for for your support and love for this story.
***
The Other Shoe, Epilogue
One Year Later
Deeks moved around the kitchen, dicing some onions, stirring a pan of chicken, grabbing a couple of cloves of onion. He’d gotten home from work 45 minutes ago, and started in on dinner, knowing Kensi would be back later than him.
In the last year, a lot had changed. For one, he could walk down the beach, even run, without feeling like he’d collapse. He’d recovered from his transplant surgery better than could be expected. Although he had returned to most of his previous activities pre kidney failure, he had officially resigned as an investigator upon receiving his medical clearance.
Now, he supervised a team of NCIS lawyers and assisted with modifying agency procedures and guidelines as needed. Much like his job as liaison, he had a feeling that the position had been designed specifically for him. It was hardly what Deeks had expected for himself, but he found he enjoyed most of the work.
A timer on his phone beeped and he absentmindedly turned it off, grabbing the medication sorter off the counter, and popping the contents in his mouth along with a swallow of water. Humming a John Denver song under his breath, he continued cooking. He heard the front door open and close, and called out,
“I’m in the kitchen!”
Deeks looked over his shoulder as Kensi walked in, barefoot and in a tank top and jeans.
“Hey, welcome home, Lady Bird of my Heart.”
“Hey. Ooh, what’s for dinner?”
He grinned at her eagerness, nodding to the pan of peppers and onions. “Fajitas and semi-authentic rice. How was work today,?”
“Good. I taught a baby agent how to disassemble an incendiary device hidden inside a truck,” Kensi told him excitedly. Deeks turned around completely, his eyebrows high enough to touch his bangs.
“You what now?”
“It was a simulation,” she clarified quickly. Deeks visibly relaxed.
“Could have led with that, baby.” He left the stove to wrap his arms around her, and kissed her temple. Kensi tipped his chin down to kiss him more firmly on the mouth.
“Sorry. I just got excited,” she explained. “As much as I don’t miss the danger, I do miss the adrenaline rush that comes with fieldwork.”
That was another big change; shortly after Deeks settled into his new position, Kensi decided resign as well. Kilbride hadn’t been pleased to lose two of his team within months of each other, but ended up recommending Kensi for a supervisory position as well. She now trained incoming agents fresh out of FLETC to prepare them for their first real field experiences.
“I know you do,” Deeks said softly. He also knew his health crisis had played some part in her decision to step down. Thought Kensi insisted it was for many reasons.
“How about you? How was your day?” Kensi asked, reaching over his shoulder to sneak a piece of chicken.
“The new edits to the handbook were accepted. Finally got the definition and duties for an NCIS investigator clarifies more thoroughly.”
“That’s been bugging you for years! Congratulations.” Kensi kissed him again, as though he’d performed some impressive feat.
“I mean, it’s not nearly as exciting as yours,” he pointed out.
“Hey, don’t downplay your efforts. Because of you, future investigators won’t have to wonder about their scope of duty. Of course, it also means they won’t be able to use it to their benefit like you did.”
“True. It was fun to mess with you guys.”
“Yes, I know,” Kensi said dryly. She slid a hand up into his hair, leaning into him. He felt the gentle rounding of her stomach pressed against him, and he brushed his fingers over it.
“And how’s Baby Deeks-Blye today?” he asked.
“Happy and hungry.”
“Dinner will be ready in a few minutes.” He grinned again, squeezing Kensi against him. “Does baby want salsa tonight?”
“Definitely,” Kensi responded immediately. She slid out of his arms, heading for the cabinets. “I’ll set the table.”
Deeks watched her for a few moments, overwhelmed by the simple delight of it all. Last year, he thought he might die, and here he was healthy, happier than ever, a baby on the way.
Yeah, a lot had changed. He’d always be on medication, he had to watch his diet to a degree, and his days chasing bad guys were gone forever, but he found it didn’t matter as much as he thought it would.
In the end, he was just happy for a second chance.

A/N: Sorry for the slightly cheesy ending. Hope you enjoyed this final bit of lightness after all the dark and angst.

You know what? I think people forget that Wen Qing is realistically probably in her early to mid twenties at the start of the sunshot campaign.
Like I see a lot of people make her Wei Wuxian’s age or just one to two years older, but she’s a seasoned doctor running a supervisory camp and she calls Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian brats and bosses Wen Ning around and suddenly this all makes a lot more sense to me if she’s actually twenty five at the time and they’re seventeen.
It certainly gives her the time to build up the reputation and skill set that she has in canon without begging the question of how she’s had the time to train as a cultivator and a doctor and deal with Wen Ruohan on top of it.

Losing the Shadows // Part 2
Tumblr media
Pairing: eventual Aaron Hotchner x Reader; platonic Aaron Hotchner x Reader
Summary: A nightly phone call does not bode well for Hotch. Neither does it for Y/N or her daughter. Hotch comes to the rescue and saves the day night. At least slightly.
Warnings: violence, domestic violence, hospitals
Part 1
--------------------
It had been a few days since the incident at the Bakery. Hotch and Y/N had made out a date for the kids to meet up again while saying their goodbyes outside. Due to contrasting schedules that day would only be a week later, to the huge disappointment of Cassedy and Jack. He had wanted to check in on her in the time since, he didn’t have her number though. In all the chaos he had given her one of his cards and she did have the intention to write her number onto another one of them. However, the sugar high kids had demanded attention and so both of them had forgotten about it. Now that he was back home from his team’s latest case however, he was looking forward to fall into bed and just go to sleep. He checked in on Jack, who was peacefully sleeping, and then went to bed.
Only a few hours after he fell asleep, the ringing of his phone woke him up. Instantly on alert, thanks to years of training, he grabbed for it and expected to see Strauss’ or Rossi’s name. What he did see though, was an unknown number. He frowned slightly but accepted the call anyways:
“Supervisory Special Agent Aaron Hotchner”, he stated, expecting it to be a call from the BAU. There was a moment of silence however before he heard stifled sobs on the other side of the line and the tear strained voice of a child was to be heard.
“Mr. Aaron, is that y-you?” She was whispering and sounded absolutely devastated. If Hotch hadn’t already been awake, he would be now. He recogniced that voice.
“Cassedy, Sweetheart, is that you?”, he asked gently. Whatever was going on, he didn’t want to scare her even more by his usual rather stern approach to those situations.
“Y-yes. C-can you h-help, please?” The plea broke his heart, but he couldn’t let the emotion show. It wouldn’t help anyone if he lost his cool right now and his number one priority was to find out what was happening right now.
“Of course, darling. Can you tell me what’s going on?” Her sobbing became even stronger at the question and her breathing was way too fast. She tripped over her words while trying to explain what was going on before giving up. He had understood though, the words “mommy” und “Stan” and didn’t need much more. What he did need however, was to make sure that the little girl on the phone was safe.
“Hey Cassedy, you need to calm down a little, alright? I’m on my way to help you and mommy, okay? Can you take a deep breath for me, Sweetheart? And another one. Very good. Now, can you do me a favor and count to fifty very slowly?” As she started counting, he muted himself and grabbed the landline, calling Jessica to ask her to come and keep an eye on Jack. Hearing the slight panic in his voice, she had known him for far too long for him to hide that, she agreed without asking any questions. After ringing off, he unmuted his mobile just in time for Cassedy to reach fifty.
“Very good, Sweetheart. Can you try and explain again what’s going on?”, he gently tried again.
“Stan is being mean to Mommy. She s-send me to my h-hinding place and gave me her phone. She s-said to call the police and to not c-come out, n-no matter what I hear. She’s been crying and s-screaming and now it’s all silent. But I’m scared to go out and I couldn’t remember the n-number of the p-police and your contact was the first. Can you please come and help?”
“You’re doing so very well, Sweetheart. Stay in your hiding spot, alright? I’m on my way to help, I promise. I’m going to be there in just a few minutes, okay? I’m going to call one of my colleagues, just in case, and we’re going to make sure that mommy’s alright.”
And that was exactly what he did. He called Rossi, who was the only one of the team, who knew what had happened at the bakery, Hotch had told him over coffee one afternoon. Rossi agreed without any further questions and immediately made his way to the address Hotch had given him while Hotch did the same. They arrived roughly at the same time, though Hotch was definitely more panicked. He had tried to keep Cassedy on the line to make sure she was safe but had lost the connection roughly in the middle of the way over. Which had prompted him to break even more traffic laws than before.
Rossi joined him as soon as he arrived, carefully analyzing the other man to make sure he was indeed fit to deal with the situation. He didn’t necessarily like the the look his friend was giving him, but the situation on had demanded his attention. Hotch instantly moves towards the door, noticing that it was already open.
“Seems like the door was broken open by force”, Rossi quietly observed, throwing another gaze at Hotch. He carefully pushes the door open, immediately stopping at the sight that greeted them. The hallway was an absolute wreckage. Things were thrown around; furniture was upturned, and shards of glass and ceramics littered the floor.
“Mio Dio, we should be careful”, Rossi whispered. Both drew their guns, slowly and carefully following the path of destruction through the kitchen into the living room. Taking a few steps into the room, Y/N’s unconscious body came into their view. They swiftly made sure that there was no one else in the room, before Hotch hurried over to her, making sure that she was not fatally hurt. Rossi stayed at the door and moved to check the rest of the house for unwanted intruders. As soon as Hotch realized he moved to follow, but Rossi just shook his head.
“Stay. Make sure she’s alright. I can handle the rest and look for the Bambino.” Hotch just noded and focused on Y/Ns still form. She was bleading from a head injury and bruises were already blooming all over her body. Thankfully though, her breathing and pulse were steady. He grabbed a towel from the kitchen and gently pressed it against the bleeding wound to stop the blood flow. His sighed sadly at how small she looked, lying on the floor like this. His other hand came up to gently cup her cheek, his thumb lighly rubbing over a smear of blood. He hadn’t expected something like this to happen. Stan had seemed slightly aggressive, but he had made the impression that he was just glad to be gone. So why would he come back to hurt Y/N? He heared footsteps coming back down the stairs and looked over his shoulder to see Rossi coming back towards him.
“He’s not here anymore. I couldn’t find the Dolcezza, though. Maybe you should have another look? I don’t think he would take her with him after everything you told me. It sounded like he wanted to get rid of the responsibility to be taking care of a child after all.”
Worry instantly took over Hotch’s thoughts, but he had to admit that Rossi’s explanation did make sense. The destruction also did seem to be contained to the lower level of the house and the three rooms. I didn’t look like someone had afterwards gone in search of a child. He gazed at Y/N again and sighed, gently brushing some stray hair from her face. This was turning out to be quiet a mess. He was glad to have met Y/n and Cassedy though.
“I’ll take care of her, Aaron. See if you can find the kid, I’ll call for an ambulance, alright?”
Hotch nodded and got up, accepting the comforting pat of his shoulder Rossi bestowed upon him and started to search the house for Cassedy as well. He checked the upstairs romms without any success and then, just to make sure, checked the downstairs rooms again, which also turned out to be unsuccessful. Calling her name hadn’t helped either as there had been no response from the little girl.
“No success either?”, Rossi asked him, a worried frown appearing on his face. Shaking his head no, Hotch scanned Y/Ns body for any change in health. He thankfully could see none. Where could Cassedy be hiding? Maybe there was a secret room or hideaway, a quick mental calculation of the house’s layout made this option seem very unlikely though.
“The ambulance is on its way”, Dave motioned to the phone still placed on the ground and something clicked within Hotch’s brain. How could he have been so stupid and forgotten all about the phone.
“That’s it, Rossi! Cassedy called me via mobile phone. I’ll try to call her back, see if she picks up.” He grabbed his mobile while his friend chuckled slightly and hit the redial button. It didn’t take long for someone to pick up.
“Cassedy?”, he asked immediately. The small voice of the child, still terrified and hidden away answered him yes.
“Can you come out of your hiding place, Sweetheart?”
“I’m scared Mr. Aaron, I don’t want to come out. It’s not safe.” If Hotch had thought his heart couldn’t break any further, he was sorely mistaken. No child should ever feel scared like this.
“That’s quite understandable, Cassedy. Me and my colleague are here now, and we are helping you mommy. We want to make sure that you’re alright, too. Won’t you tell me where you’re hiding?”
“How do I know it’s you?”, came the slightly petulant voice over the phone and despite the situation he couldn’t help but chuckle. It was a warranted question, though. And he was glad that she was being cautious, even though, in all honesty, the need for it was quite sad.
“We can agree on a codeword. Once you tell me where you’re hiding, I’ll come to you and say the codeword, then you know it’s me. Is that okay?” They agreed on a codeword, and Cassedy told him that she was hiding in a secret compartment of her wadrobe. He quickly made his way back upstairs and into her room. Kneeling down before the wadrobe he loudly said the codeword and waited for a reaction. Almost immediately the door opened, and a small body threw itself into his arms. He wrapped her into a secure hug and picked her up. Tears were running down her face and she was sobbing again. He gently swayed her from side to side and rubbed her back comfortingly, muttering soothing word into her hair. He heard the sirens of the approaching ambulance but didn’t want to go downstairs. He didn’t want the little girl in his arms to see her mother unconscious and bleeding on the floor and he knew that Rossi would handle everything. Cassedy however started to squirm in his arms once the sound registered and pleaded to see her mommy
“Your mommy is going to be alright, Cassedy. I promise that you can see her soon. The doctors are going to help her a little and she’s going to be up and about in no time.” At least that’s what he hoped.
“Mommy’s hurt?” Her big hazle eyes stared at his, still reddened and glazed over with tears. And as much as he wanted to protect her, he had enough experience by now to know that lying to her would have even worse consequences than telling her the truth.
“Yes, Sweetheart. Mommy is a little hurt right now. My colleague, Mr. Rossi, is with her right now. He’ll make sure that the doctors take care of her until we can follow them.” She just nodded and laid her head against his shoulder. Hotch pressed a kiss to her temple and looked around the room.
“Shall we pick out some clothes and toys for you? I can’t leave you here all alone after all and you might spend the night somewhere else.” Letting herself be distracted Cassedy nodded and helped him to pick out some clothes, a stuffed toy and two books to take with them. She brought him her dinosaur backpack, that Jack would absolutely love were he to see it, and watched him as he put everything inside. Meanwhile Hotch listened to the paramedics leave and picked the little girl back up again as well as the backpack. He heard Rossi come upstairs and felt Cassedy tense in his arms.
“It’s alright, Sweetheart. That’s just my colleague I told you about, remember?” She nodded slightly and looked shyly at Rossi.
“Hello Mr. Rossi”, she whispered at him. Dave gifted her with a blinding smile and a warm greeting, complimenting the dinosaur backpack and conspirationally telling her his favourite dinosaur. That seemed to make her relax a little as he followed Rossi down the stairs, Cassedy still in his arms. Once they reached the downstairs, he gently hugged her face against his chest, so she wouldn’t see the destruction, and followed his colleague back outside to the cars. Staring confusedly at his outstretched had, Hotch cocked an eyebrow in question.
“Your car keys, Aaron. Taking two cars doesn’t really make sense and you might need your car more than I do later on. Also, you’ve got the booster seat.” Smiling slightly, he handed over the keys and strapped Cassedy into Jacks booster seat, which was still in the car from this afternoon when Jessica had used his car to go and get Jack. He chose the seat besides her, to make sure she was alright. It was Rossi however who roped her into a conversation about dinosaurs and an adventurouse story of how he’d once seen a real dinosaur skeleton while driving the three of them to the hospital. Hotch was thankful for the few minutes he could use to take several deep breathes and calm down, properly taking in everything that had happened in the last hour.
Another hour later found the three of them in the waiting room of the hospital while Y/N was being checked by several doctors. Hotch had spent about half an hour going through the first book that he and Cassedy had packed, a story about a young wizard destined to protect the once and future king from harm without revealing his magical abilities. After that Rossi had asked the little girl if she wanted to accompany him into the cafeteria and promised her hot chocolate. Hotch used the time to message a short update to Jessica, letting her know that he would be here a little while longer. Sighing, he leaned his head back against the chair. It felt like their meeting at the bakery was an eternity ago, even though it had just been four days.
“Agent Hotchner?”, a female voice sounded through the waiting room. He immediately stood up and moved towards her.
“Yes? How is Miss L/N doing? Is she going to be alright?” The nurse smiled at him and nodded slightly.
“Yes, Miss L/N was very lucky. She does have a rather strong concussion but compared to how severe the head injury looked at first, that’s a huge relief. We first thought there might be swelling of the brain, but the test all came back negative. Other than that, she has a broken arm that was easily set and two broken ribs as well as a few heavily bruised ones. I’m happy to say that those are all set and will easily heal as well. Miss L/N is expected to make a full recovery in due time. However, we will keep her for the night to monitore the head injury just in case. She should be fine to be released tomorrow if there’s someone who can take care of her.” Hotch took a relieved breath, a hand raking through his hair.
“That’s good to hear. Will her daughter be able to see her for a moment before we come back tomorrow?”
“Well, she is asleep. As long as you don’t disturbe her, you can have a short moment with her. Afterwards you should leave and get a bit of sleep. Come back at around 10 am tomorrow, the doctors visit should be over by then and she might be able to leave.”
“Thank you”, Hotch muttered gratefully. The woman nodded at him and gifted him with another smile before disappearing again. Hotch settled back on his chair to wait for Dave and Cassedy. They reappeared a few minutes later, holding steaming cups of baverages in their hand. Carefully balancing two cups Cassedy moved towards him and handed him one of them. Hotch smiled at her and thanked her quietly. He gratefully took a gulp of coffee and waited until all of them had emptied their drinks, before sitting down next to the little girl.
“I spoke with one of the doctors, Cassedy. You mommy’s going to be alright. She’s asleep right now and she has to stay the night to make sure that everything heals nicely. We can go and see her for a moment, but we have to be really quiet, so she doesn’t wake up, alright?” She nodded along enthusiastically, her little curls bouncing around her head.
“We can’t spend the night here, Sweetheart. Would you be alright spending the night with me and Jack? You’ll have your own room, and we can watch the newest dinosaur documentary Jake picked out last week for breakfast before coming back here.”
He knew that the situation wasn’t ideal, that she barely knew him and Jack and might be uncomfortable spending the night. He disregarded the fact that regulations would usually force him to give the child into custody for the night. He didn’t see the need to, and he knew that Rossi wouldn’t tell on him. She surprised him however when her tiny hand grabbed his and she nodded.
“Please. You’re safe Mr. Aaron.” Well, there went his crumpeling heart. It was uncanny how protective he already felt over her after meeting her two times. He gently ruffled her hair and slowly got up, keeping her hand in his.
“Do you want to go and see mommy now?” She nodded and followed him. Dave followed a few steps behind, wanting to see that she would be alright, too. They spent about 15 minutes in the small hospital room. Y/N looking a little better already now that she wasn’t covered in blood. The dark bruises however were still a startling contrast to her pale skin. He and Rossi had a short conversation about what had happened and her injuries.
“If her daughter is anything to go bye, Y/N must be absolutely lovely. I hope to see her again, once she’s back on her feet. You take the car to get the bambino home, I’ll take a cab. I’ll let Strauss know that you won’t be coming in tomorrow, the days after the team is off the rota anyways. Let me know how it goes, will you!” Before Hotch could thank him, the man had disappeared out of the room. Sitting down in the chair besides the bed, he gently grabbed Y/Ns hand, careful not to wake her. Studying her for a few minutes, he felt relived to know that she would be alright. He leaned foreward, resting his elbows against the bed and gently pressed a kiss against the back of her hand.
“I promise it’s going to be alright. I’m going to keep you safe from now on, Cassedy as well of course”, he quietly murmured against her skin before letting go of her hand and softly placing it back on the bed.
He gently extracted a sleeping Cassedy from where she had curled up on the bed besides her mother, slowly carrying her back to the car and carefully strapping her in. The drive back home was uneventful and so he carried the little girl back into his home only 20 minutes later. He was greeted by Jessica in the hallway, who looked at the two of them with obvious surprise. He quietly motioned for her to wait a moment while he put Cassedy to bed in the guestroom, leaving a nighlight on so she wouldn’t wake up in the dark, before placing her stuffed toy besides her.
Then he made his way back downstairs where Jessica was waiting in the livingroom, having poured two glasses of water for them. He smiled at her and exhaustedly sank back onto the couch.
“I didn’t expect you to come home with a kid.” She stated mildly.
“Neither did I”, a small smile tugged at his lips. “Do you remember when I told you about what happened at the bakery a few days ago?” Jessica nodded, realisation on her face.
“Cassedy called from her mother’s phone earlier, asking me for help. Said that her mother’s partner was back, and she’d told her to hide and call the police. When Rossi and I got there he was already gone. He’d done a lot of damage… We had to call an ambulance and made sure that Y/N was well taken care off. And well, Cassedy needed somewhere to stay for the night. I didn’t want to send her to a place full of strangers after the scary night she just had.” He sighed and sipped on his water. They talked for a few more minutes, agreeing on what needed to be done the next day, before the exhaustion became too much. He insisted that Jessica take his bed while he slept on the couch, since it was far too late for her to drive back home. Giving in, she gave him a reassuring hug and vanished upstairs. Despite his racing thoughts he fell asleep soon after, not even changing his clothed to something more comfortable.
The next morning passed surprisingly uneventful. Aaron had woken up first and prepared everythingfor his and Jack's weekend ritual of pancakes for breakfast. Doing double the amount so both their guests would get some pancakes as well. He went to change into jeans and a sweatshirt, brushing his teeth and showering while the coffee was brewing. He then went to wake Jack, explaining the situation to him, not wanting Cassedy to get overwhelmed by unsuspecting questions. While he helped Jack to get dressed and brush his teeth, learning all about last weeks classes, he heard Jessica getting up as well. Sending Jack downstairs to help his aunt, he went to check in on Cassedy. He knocked gently on the door and to his surprise, he expected her to still be asleep, was answered rather timidly. He gently opened the door, mindfully only taking a couple of steps into the room to not make her uncomfortable.
“Good morning, Sweetheart. Did you sleep well? I hope you haven’t been awake for too long, being bored to death?” She giggled quietly and shook her head.
“Good morning, Mr. Aaron” He smiled as well, slowly taking a few more steps to open the window blinds and let some light in.
“You can just say Aaron, Darling. Shall we get you dressed? Jack and his Aunt Jessica are already downstairs preparing breakfast. You picked the right day for a sleepover, it’s Pancake Saturday.” With pancakes as motivation, she got up, brushed her teeth and with Hotch’s help got dressed in the clothes they’d packed the night before. After a ginormous amount of pancakes and a promised dinosaur documentary later, Jessica stayed to watch over Jack while Hotch and Cassedy made their way back to the hospital.
Hotch found the nurse from last night, who informed him that they were free to visit since the doctor’s check up was already finished. As soon as they had reached the room, Cassedy ran to the bed and threw herself in her mother’s arms. Y/N winced slightly in pain but hugged her daughter firmly to her chest anyways.
“I’m so glad to see that you’re alright, Darling!”, she whispered into her hair. Hotch understood the double meaning of the words that not only meant that she’d been well cared for for the night, but that Stan had not found and hurt her either.
“Aaron made us pancakes for breakfast, Mommy. They are even better than yours.” Y/N laughed slightly and looked up towards Hotch.
“Well, maybe I should ask Aaron to teach me how to make them then. I’m sure he has a special ingredient to make them even better than my pancakes.” Aaron smiled back at her and shrugged guiltily, but she just smiled at him.
“Thank you, Aaron. I understand that you were our knight in shining armour last night and I can’t thank you enough for that!” Aaron understood that she kept her words purposefully light for Cassedy’s sake and nodded in understanding.
“Don’t worry about it”, he gently answered. “So, when are you allowed to leave? The nurse last night said you might be allowed to leave today.”
Y/N ruefully shook her head, looking a bit sad.
“I don’t know. They said I might leave today if someone takes me in or moves in with me. My remaining family doesn’t live close enough for that though, so I guess I’ll stay here until I’m well enough for them to let me leave on my own.”
Hotch felt a twinge of sadness at her words, realizing that she had no support nearby and must feel like she had to deal with the situation all on her own. He’d spoken with Jessica this morning and told her what the nurse had said to him. She’d immediately encouraged him to take Y/N in for the time being, insiting that it was bound to be good for both of them. That Y/N and Cassedy might not feel safe at their home right now anyways and that both kids would profit from having someone their age nearby. She’d jokingly told him that she’d appreciate another babysitter and that Y/N would still be perfectly capable to look after the children even with a broken arm and ribs. On a more serious note, she’d told him that Hotch himself might benefit from the situation as well, letting someone in and learning to trust again.
“Well, I have an empty guest room that is bound to be way more comfortable than this hospital room. You’re very welcome to stay with us until then”, he offered instantly.
Y/N looked up in utter surprise at the offer, staring at him for a moment before shaking her head.
“Oh no, we couldn’t possibly take up any more of your time. You’ve already done so much for us!”
“You truly wouldn’t be a bother. The room is unused anyways most of the time and Jessica, my sister-in-law, would be grateful to not have to be on babysitter duty all the time when I leave for work. And I could teach you my super secret pancake receipt.”
“Please Mommy?”, Cassedy chimed in, and Hotch could see that her daughter’s plea was the thing to tip her over.
“Alright, if you’re really sure that we’re not going to be a bother?”
“Absolutely. I’ll let the nurse know so they can prepare the release papers for you.”
And this was the start of Y/Ns six week stay at the Hotchner household, which indeed visibly benefited all of them and did include loads of pancakes.
