The Valkyries friendships
Someone asked about it and i got way too much into it so i'm also making separate posts lol (you can find the original post here)
【 The Valkyries 】
Extra headcanons
☆ Roommates
☆ Thigh knitted group, wouldn’t let a man destroy their relationship.
☆ All equally friends but with completely different dynamics, if you asked them who their best friends was, Mary and Lily would probably say each other’s and Marlene would say Pete. That doesn’t mean that Marlene doesn’t feel included in the trio. Sometimes she jokes that she’s Marylily kids, when they had a big argument, she Really felt like a child of divorce.
☆ They would have sleepover parties every Saturday, because Sunday was the day Lily would take the afternoon off from studying. They would get food from the kitchen and play Mary’s record player. Sometimes they played cards, others than would braid each other’s hair or play with Mary’s makeup.
☆ Sometimes Lily would read them a story and Mary and Marlene would sit and listen entranced. That was when Lily would be fully confident, making different voices, moving her arms, she was spectacular to see. How much life there was in this adorable little red haired girl.
☆ The numbers were off and so they got one of the three person room. The last bed was used as a bazar and the closest was used by Mary who would always bring extra clothes so she could lend them to Lily and Marlene. The bed was full of books and art projects and random class reports (Marlene).
☆ In first year, Mary had asked the house elves to not clean their room because it made her feel weird, and so they would spend the morning of Sunday just cleaning up so the room would have a fresh start for the new week. Lily was the one making sure it would be done, Mary and Marlene would complain, but end up doing it while playing music and talking about the week to come.
☆ Marlene got really into Ancient Greece mythology after Lily brought back a book and would read only the parts about the girls, skipping all the rest. She especially cared for Medusa and Hated Zeus. Mary had little interest but sometimes Lily would told her some story so she wasn’t fully out of the loop. They all became Zeus haters and even made a club as a joke.
☆ After the marauders gave themselves a stupid name, they were all having one of their sleepovers and judging how stupid it sounded. Marlene said she would be way better at naming them if they let her, only to propose the shittiest name known to men. After making fun of her, Mary and Lily also gave it a try. They thought it was kind of fun and the conversation shifted to band names and so the three of them thought about how they would name their band; because, of course, they would be together. After a few fails, Marlene had the best, for the only time in her life, name idea, and said “The Valkyries!!!”. Lily quickly gave a definition of them, and Mary sprung herself from the ground to jump because it was a great name. They never said it to anyone, but secretly they would call themselves the Valkyries.
☆ When Lily discovered Abba one summer, she immediately showed Mary and they spent the summer saving up money to buy records player to bring back for Marlene. She Loved it and it became their music of choice anytime they would organize a party. Their favourite song was Honey, Honey because it was the first one they spent endless afternoons dancing to.

Cotton mull sporting ensemble
English or American, mid-1880s
Tumblr media
From the mid-century, the rise in tourism and women's growing participation in outdoor physical activities required yet more specialized toilettes. However, clothes worn for walking, skating, yachting, and tennis, all followed the fashionable silhouette, limiting overly strenuous—and by definition, unladylike—exertion. Perhaps worn for a gentle round of croquet or  strolling, this summer day dress  made an eye-catching appearance.
Women had access on a seasonal basis to an enormous variety of mass-produced printed cottons. Characteristic of the mid-1880s is this bold and somewhat whimsical design. Tiny white irregular shapes, graduated in size, fill the upper part of the black polka dots, set against a sheer white self-striped ground. Seen through the transparent layer of the overskirt, the dots on the underskirt give the impression of shadows.
Uncomplicated in its construction, the three-piece dress shows off the graphic pattern to advantage. The front and back of the jacket bodice are lightly pleated from shoulder to hem, bringing the rows of dots close together—in contrast to their wide spacing on the sleeves and skirts. The overskirt reveals the judicious use of fabric often seen during the period. Probably cut from the same length, the right side gore is placed upside down while the left side gore is turned to the reverse side. Due to the design's regularity  and the cotton's sheerness of the cotton, this clever economy is not readily apparent. Black faceted glass buttons and scallop-edged lace trimming add dainty finishing touches.
According to The New York Fashion Bazar of July 1883, "printed mulls are among the latest novelties." This  dress with its airy pattern would have made a perfect ensemble for "the month of…intense heat," and diaphanous fashion.

I hate it here
when I grow up I want to live by the beach. I want sand in my clothes and saltwater on my feet. I want to swim and learn to surf someday. my undying love for the sea keeps my heart by the beach all year round. I wish to be so close to the sea that her and I become one. And if I sink , I hope she grasps me whole. I hope the fishes love my flesh , I hope my rotting corpse become their food. Living and dying while saltwater exhausts my lungs is my ultimate destiny and only then I will be the happiest, my most content self. All the sea creatures will have a piece of me in them. Even the blobfishes and the shark eggs. Even the coral reefs and the stingrays. In Mariana Trench and in Cox's Bazar. All parts of my being will one day be so tangled up with deep blue water that you won't be able to feel one summer breeze without thinking of that one sad girl from the busy city. And I hope she reminds you of all the good blue days and all the pink and orange sunsets. I hope you remember her and hold her close to you heart .

The start of the summer season in Paris in the 1890s could arguably be the Bazar de la Charité, sort of a rummage sale for the wealthy to benefit the poor. The height of Parisian’s female society passed through its doors each year, and May 4th, 1897, was no different. But the presence of the bazaar’s biggest novelty - a cinematograph showing films by the Lumière brothers - also led to a gruesome tragedy.

@countlessrealities sent:
Valentine's Day had never been a big deal for Summer. She had always celebrated it with her past boyfriends, but that was just because it was what was expected of her. The popular kids of her school had always made a big deal out of it, with the girls demanding presents that they could then show off to the crowd. Having to listen to them bragging and coming up with fake compliments was annoying as hell, but it was part of the rules of the social game and she didn't want to be left behind.
With Salomé there, things hadn't really changed...not for the school. They had for Summer on a personal level. After all, every excuse was good for her to try and dote on her girlfriend. The brunette always showered her with gifts and, while she tried to give back in other ways, she still liked to return the favour, when she could her away with it.
And that was why she had asked Salomé to go out for coffee before the start of their lessons that day. There was a small café not too far from the school, tucked away in one of the alleys. It was nothing fancy, but it had a warm, cozy vibe.
Once they were seated at one of the small wooden tables, waiting for their orders, Summer cleared her throat, trying not to look too nervous.
“So, uh, I know that this is, like, a stupid commercial holiday, but...I got you something,” she started, picking up her bag and rummaging inside it. “It’s just a little thing, but when I saw it at this alien bazar it made me think of you.”
She pulled out a small rectangular box, decorated with a thin red ribbon. Attached to it there was a small piece of paper, where she had written their initial inside a heart. A little childish, perhaps, but she had thought that it would be cute.
Inside there was a hair comb, made with some kind of metal that looked like gold, but felt lighter and slicker. On top of it, a chiselled burgundy flower, vaguely similar to a lily, reproduced down to the smallest detail.
“Sooo...Happy ‘spend all your money on useless sappy shit’ day?”
[[ Summer for Salomé! I hope you don't mind, my girl wanted to get your queen something for V-Day 🤭 ]]
Tumblr media
Salomé always celebrated Valentine’s Day. Or more exactly, she always received plenty of expensive gifts every year, from suitors and boyfriends alike. But it was her first year having an actual girlfriend. Not a fling, not a rich boy-toy only here to distract her, no. This year she was with someone she actually liked.
She usually didn’t care for Valentine’s Day, and was rich enough that all the designer bags and jewels bored her just as fast as everything else. So why was she so strangely touched by the fact that Summer had a gift for her?
Not that she hadn’t gotten her girlfriend a present (of course she had, something ridiculously luxurious). But she was used to things being thrown at her in the hope of catching her attention. Summer already had her attention. (And yes, she would have made a scene if the redhead hadn’t bought her something, but she was allowed to make no sense at all).
“Oh, babe, you didn’t need to,” she said with a little smile, head tilted in a way that meant ‘yes, yes you needed to’.
As if the simple fact that Summer had gotten her something hadn’t been moving enough, the gift itself left her speechless. Well, not the gift, not exactly. It was a beautiful hair comb, yes, but she had hundred of those.
It was what Summer said that took all the air out of her lungs.
‘It made me think of you’
She blinked, losing her usual composure for a split second. And then, the charming smile and fluttering eyelashes were back. “It’s absolutely adorable Summer,” she couldn’t help but downplay, puzzled by the emotions twirling in her heart.
“I love it,” she still added, and it was true.
Tumblr media
"And of course I have something for you too!” In a twirl of black hair, she got her own bag, took the little blue box out of it. Was it as thoughtful? She didn’t know. It had cost her a lot. And she did think that silver was a lovely color for Summer. But she always threw money at her, would Summer grow bored of it? Just like Salomé was?
She let none of these thoughts appear on her face, looking just as perfect and proud as usual. And then, she placed the little box on the table, a Tiffany’s box containing an (expensive) silver bracelet with little emeralds. “Silver and green are definitely your colors babe,” she casually added, blowing a kiss at her girlfriend.

Mr Joy: “Uacciuari”
Tumblr media
Abbi fede è fiducia in te, Uacciuari forever!.» Mr Joy

From the longing of the sight of your blossoming face
Recalling a classic song from the old Kabul ‘s narrow alleyways that once gave birth to eloquent poets and heavenly voiced nightingales
The Lyrics
From the longing of the sight of your blossoming face, shall I be crazed or not?
In the coil of your tresses, shall I be bound or not?
Your tresses are disheveled, I too am unsettled
With your tangled tresses, shall I be your comb or not?
My love veers towards madness, my mind takes pleasure in art
In the struggle of both, shall I be crazed or not?
The Vocalists
Ustad Mohammad Ghulam Dastagir Shayda (1916-70)
Poem by Naidem Kabuli
This recording originates from Radio Kabul in the late 1950s or early 1960s.
Vocals Haidar Salim
A mid-1990s album of private recordings was a dedication to the artist's late father, featuring his father’s favorite songs.
A mid-1990s album of private recordings was a dedication to the artist's late father, featuring his father’s favorite songs.
The Poet
Nadiem Kabuli عبدالغفور ندیم کابلی was born in the Shor Bazar شوربازار neighborhood of Kabul. Though his exact birthdate is unknown, he passed away in his early 30s.
His first collection of poems was printed in 1930 by Sardar Azizullah Khan Qatil سردار عزیزالله خان قتیل, the Kabul court ambassador to Tehran.
A new edition was recently published in Tehran in 2009.
The Poem and Composition
The composition and the poems share an exquisite poetic style reminiscent of Old Kabul کابل قدیم. It reflects a time long gone when the art of words and music intertwined to tell stories of love, grief, and the human experience in the distinctive Kabuli literary and musical arts style labeled the Kabuli ghazal غزل کابلی, established by Ustad Qasim (1978-1956)استاد قاسم افغان in the early 1900s.
Nadiem Kabuli's عبدالغفور ندیم کابلی verses dance to the rhythm of the "Hindi Style" Sabk-i Hindi سبک هندی, a poetic tradition born in the Mughal courts of India and Kabulistan, where the latter served as the summer capital. This style is about painting fresh, intricate pictures with minimal wordplay. It's like a skilled painter who can perfectly capture the essence of a scene with just a few brushstrokes.
Ustad Mohammad Ghulam Dastagir Shayda استاد غلام محمد دستگیر شیدا , a master of the musician's quarter, Kharabat in Kabul خرابات کابل, composed it in the 1950s or possibly earlier. However, we do know that this song has been discovered by those new to the classical Kabul ghazal genre for many generations.
This song holds a special place in my heart. The poet who wrote it hailed from my ancestral paternal neighborhood, and the singer who performed it was a dear friend of my maternal uncle Ghafourماما غفور. As it happens, my uncle, along with my extended family members, was a musical arts patron.
When I hear this song, it conjures a colloquial feeling; it takes me to the old Kabul much before my time, a Kabul, under the foothills of the Bala Hissar بالاحصار , the ancient fort, where the master musicians of Kharabat reigned over the musical high arts.
Tumblr media
Their songs reawakened the lyrics of ancient and contemporary poets in the hearts of Kabulis, a people who couldn't live without their nobel poetry and music.
Lala Machine استاد دین محمد معروف به لالا ماشین, a master Kharabati sarangi سارنگ musician, said of the Kabulis of that bygone era, "They enjoyed music, and we enjoyed playing for them."
Although the nightingales of Kharabat may now sing no more, their melodies still echo, bringing life to hearts in Kabulistan and distant lands.
Their legacy defies the dogmatic decree of silence, a testament to the enduring power of art, in Naidem Kabuli lyrics, “My mind takes pleasure in art” and that pleasure of the mind and soul cannot be extracted so easily.

Puri - 2
|| Om Namo Narayanaya || So far we have covered the East Gate and Aruna Stambha. There is a shrine on the right side with a replica of the main Jagannath. This deity is none other than 'Patita Pāvana' literally the one who purifies the fallen. The word 'Patita Pavana' appears 3 times in the Puri Jagannath temple. The deity resembles the one inside the main temple. Let's briefly recount the story of His appearance.
Tumblr media
The Royal Family of Puri is dedicated to the administration, service and protection of the temple. Once, during the 18th century, a Muslim king invaded Odisha and declared war with the King of Puri, Ramachandra Deva. Unfortunately, Ramachandra Deva was defeated in the war. The Muslim king forced him to either marry his commander's daughter; or to see the Jagannath temple, God forbid, being demolished. He was forced to change his religion and marry the commander's daughter. However, this barred his entry into the temple due to the strict age-old rule of allowing only Hindus to enter the temple.
This saddened King Ramachandra because on one hand, he changed his religion to protect the temple of his Lord, and on the other hand, he was prevented from seeing Him. Jagannath appeared in a sculptor's dream to console him, ordering him to construct a shrine at the temple entrance with a replica of the main deity. The sculptor made the deity with a peculiar type of wood, similar to the main deities in the Garbhagriha.
This deity is known as Patita Pavana and can also be seen from a distance. Those who cannot visit the main temple due to constraints can have Darshan of Patita Pavana. This is considered equivalent to having Darshan in the main temple. Every morning around 5 AM, the temple doors are opened and Mangala Arati is offered to Patita Pavana first thing in the morning. In fact, many images and videos circulating on the Internet with misleading titles are actually of this deity because cameras and mobile phones are banned in the main temple. So, this is the 1st Patita Pavana.
Then, there is a flight of 22 stairs leading to the 2nd Prākāra (enclosure). On the way, the 5th step has an iron covering. It has a peculiar story behind it. Yama had placed his 'Yama Danda' there which is said to remove all our sins. Therefore, one must definitely place his foot on it while entering the temple, and avoid treading on it while exiting. (In fact, it is much more convenient to exit through another gate to avoid the crowd.)
Tumblr media
As we climb the stairs, there are small shrines of Kasi Viswanath (Shiva) and Narasimha Swami on the left side. Towards our left side is also the kitchen where the Prasadams are prepared and towards the right is Anand Bazar, where the Prasadams are sold after being offered to the Lord. More will be covered about them in the subsequent posts. Then we cross a gateway and reach the main temple. Right in front of us as we cross the gate is another tiny yet powerful Narasimha Swami.
The 2nd Patita Pāvana is the flag on top of the Vimāna of the main temple. It is changed ceremonially every evening between 5:30 pm and 6 pm (summer) and 5 to 5:30 pm (winter) Every day, crowds of devotees gather to witness this ceremony. Many people howl and clap while the flag is changed. Not sure whether it's a tradition or a modern trend. It is amazing to see the skilled priests who climb the Vimana carefully without any ladder or rope. (except for the spire on the top, where a rope is used.)
The flag is hoisted on a long bamboo stick. It is usually yellow or red in colour, but other colours are used as well. Previously, the flag used to be about 200 feet long, almost as long as the height of the temple. Then, due to security reasons, it was changed to half its length and then, further reduced to 21 feet, the present length.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, as we move to the left side, there are minor shrines of Agneshwar Mahadev (Shiva) and Satya Narayana Swami. Multiple temples of Lord Shiva are present all over the temple complex to signify that he is the Kshetra Palaka (guard) of Puri. Then, there is a huge Banyan tree known as Vata Vriksha. We will cover the shrines adjacent to the tree and the 3rd Patita Pavana in the next post.
