IN THIS HOUSE, WE LOVE AND SUPPORT Bi!Zuko

headcanons:

I know that there’s comic stuff about Sozin being homophobic, but I am within my rights to ignore it. If people can move rocks with their mind and if dragons can exist, there can be normalized gay people damn it.

So it’s not really a big deal to question your sexuality or to be gay/bi, but within the Fire Nation upper class you don’t really talk about it. There’s a heteronormativity problem, but not aggressive homophobia.

When he’s younger, Zuko doesn’t really think about anyone like that. He’s got firebending training, sword training, and then he’s crowned prince all of a sudden, so he’s kind of got other stuff going on.

Mai has a crush on him when she’s 12 and he’s 13 and he starts to develop some puppy-crush feelings from her.

They do a cute pre-teen date where they play with knives outside the palace and climb on roofs (Maiko does parkour on their dates, I don’t make the rules)

Mai’s really the only person he’s had feelings for by this point (again, he’s 13 and he’s been pretty busy being a prince and all to think about that sort of thing)

Then the whole banishment thing happens and he really does not have time to start thinking about those things. Hunting the avatar is a full time gig. Angst baby Zuko does not have time to sit and wonder if he thinks boy are cute.

(aside from this one time when his ship docked at this port and there was a cute sales boy at the shop they got their supplies from who made 14 year old Zuko blush just a little too hard. He made the decision to put a pin in that for later)

Then Zuko’s on a ferry to Ba Sing Se and there’s this crime boy aggressively flirting with him. The avatar hunt is on hold. It’s later, so Zuko takes that mental pin out.

Zuko can have a little ferry make out sess with mouth wheat crime boy, as a treat (let this boy have some semi-normal teenage experiences damn it)

To Jet’s credit, he’s a good kisser. But Zuko notes that he tastes like grass.

And you know, that whole thing didn’t end well.

Not your usual experience to have the guy who was your bisexual awakening burst into your work and (rightly) accuse you and your uncle of being firebenders and then attack you with hook swords, but Zuko’s never had the best luck with anything.

Jet gets arrested and Zuko doesn’t see him again, but he can’t really ignore that whole ‘oh man I guess I am into guys’ thing anymore. And it’s not like he’s got other stuff to do in Ba Sing Se besides make tea and stave off Iroh’s shopaholic tendencies.

Immediately after the Jet incident, Zuko’s more on his guard about potential threats, but what do you know? That girl just thought you were cute you paranoid dumbass.

He goes on the date with Jin and it’s awkward as hell, but he does like it when she kisses him. Honestly, he’s not really sure what he’s supposed to feel. This newfound attraction to guys is still in the back of his brain and Zuko just never thought about it seriously before.

After the date he starts letting himself take more notice of guys and girls in the teashop now that he’s pretty sure people aren’t onto them about being firebenders.

And you know.... good looking customers are good looking customers. Guys and girls.

But you know, Zuko is the king of not knowing who the fuck he is, so it’s still confusing,

And then the avatar pops back up and Zuko’s got a different identity crisis to focus on. The boy has a morality coma to get to and questioning his sexuality is put on the back burner for a bit.

Post-morality coma, Zuko’s feeling way more comfortable. Not just in terms of letting himself be happy in Ba Sing Se serving tea with his uncle, but with his sexuality as well.

Zuko thinks about his experiences and maybe, just maybe, he could be a teenager who goes on normal teenager dates and has normal teenage relationships, maybe with guys or girls. He lets himself have that notion for a little while.

He considers telling Iroh, but not quite yet.

He doesn’t get the chance after everything happens in the catacombs.

Then it’s the case where he has a more general identity crisis to deal and just kind of pushes the realization that he’s bi to the back of his mind.

Zuko and Mai get together and Zuko remembers how much he liked her when they were younger. And with everything else stressing him out, she’s there to help him feel like less of a stranger in his own home.

(Mai’s also Zuko’s best friend, regardless of any romance)

At Ember Island he does have jealousy issues, but later when Mai asks him why he was so fixated on that guy at the party Zuko starts describing exactly why those guys were attractive and how he logically would have been at least a little jealous “I mean come on Mai did you see that one guy’s biceps? I’m only partially blind”

Mai listens to this and just goes “do you want to ... tell me something?”

Zuko has a “oh yeah I’m pretty sure I’m bi, forgot to mention it, had other stuff going on” moment

Mai, who was taught to be proper and that her options were to go into politics or marry some man above her station, is now considering that both? Both is an option? Maybe?

Cut to Zuko when he joins the gaang. His bisexuality is just kind of something he doesn’t think is a big deal and doesn’t mention it.

On the air balloon to the Boiling Rock, Zuko asks Sokka about Yue and they end up talking about relationships.

Zuko mentions that he had this brief thing with a guy in Ba Sing Se but it didn’t really end well

Sokka: “wait did you say guy? I thought you had a girlfriend?”

the SWT is generally pretty accepting, but Sokka spent most of his life living in a village without many boys his age and didn’t really consider that as a possibility.

(Sokka then considers how much he thought about the Boulder after watching the Earth Rumble VI match and thinks ‘yeah there’s probably something there’)

Sokka asks Zuko more about bisexuality. Most of Zuko’s answers are along the lines of “Sokka go to sleep I don’t know who the Boulder is and I don’t care about his badger-mole tattoo”

Suki, Zuko, and Sokka form the unofficial ‘cool and bi club’

Zuko doesn’t officially come out to Iroh, but Iroh catches him looking at Sokka one day a while after he and Mai broke up (deciding they were better as friends) and makes a comment about how Zuko needs to take time for himself.

“Lord Zuko, you should not spend your teenage years with nothing but work. Go out, find a nice young lady to take out.” “Uncle...” “..or young man”

And yeah, a few years after the war ends and a while after he and Mai end their relationship, Zuko’s not really in the position to deny that he thinks that Sokka is inhumanely attractive and funny and kind

But yeah

Atla modern!au headcanons

This is gonna be a long ride so buckle up folks

Sokka has at least one clothing item with “women want me, fish fear me” (and i’m betting it’s a crop top)

Zuko has to wear a hearing aid on his scarred ear

His vision is also not great on that side

Sokka has a soccer mom car

He also is the type of friend to start screaming “I SWEAR TO TUI AND LA THIS CAR IS NOT GETTING OUT OF THIS GARAGE UNTIL EVERYONE HAS SEATBELTS ON!”

Sokka is just a huge soccer mom friend

While Sokka is the braincell holder of the group, Zuko is their impulse control

Zuko goes to occupational therapy

The white lotus is a tea tasting club, they have discount cards at Iroh’s teashop

Piandao is a master of the blades

Also distinguished gay

Bumi is basically a cryptid, he’s the jersey devil of omashu

Piandao also once got arrested for fighting cops at pride

No cops at pride just Piandao and his blades

Bato and Hakoda are peak Kevin and Holt (everyone’s dads)

Before they came out Sokka and Katara had a bet going on with Gran gran on whether they would realize everyone already knew or not (gran gran won)

Zuko cannot drive to save his life but he’s incredible good with a motorcycle

Toph basically lives with Iroh and Zuko, they’re her emotional support family figures

They have family game nights but pai sho was banned after the “great table breaking incident of 2018”

Suki is a master of at least three different known martial arts and some not really known ones

She still stutters when talking to pretty girls

Once a pretty girl smiled at Suki and she tripped and almost fell down a flight of stairs

Whenever a girl flirts with her she looses her cool when a guy flirts with her she is always non-impressed

She and Sokka are the best exes, always trolling each other tho

When Zuko and Sokka started dating her first reaction was telling Zuko “honestly you could do better”

Toph and Zuko convinced Iroh to start selling coffee on the Jasmine Dragon

Once Toph drank seven cans of redbull in a row just for shits and giggles, Iroh still has nightmares about that day

Whenever Zuko pulls all nighters Toph always puts him to bed, no one knows how

If you go for a non bending au then Druk is a bearded dragon or a ferret, i will not accept other animals

Zuko is the only person that Toph let squish her cheeks, she always giggles at it, it’s adorable, on the other hand, Toph is the only person allowed to touch his scar (she likes to map her friends’ faces with her fingers)

Toph also has an inclination to simply plop herself on Zuko’s lap, he’s warm and very comfortable and he always hugs her without saying anything

Toph knows how to braid her and always braids Zuko’s

Sokka is totally a tiktoker and a streamer

Aang watched too many tiktoks with Sokka and spent an entire month referring to Appa as “fluffly boy” only

Aang’s first friend, incredibly, was Zuko

Zuko painted blue arrows on a hoodie to give it to Aang when he complained about waiting for the tattoos

Aang cried

They are the type of friends that make constant references to events no one else knows about besides the two of them

Much similar to the Toph and Zuko situation, Sokka has adopted Aang as his little brother

They both have their daily Sokka&Aang time

Which usually involves laying with Appa and talking

Sometimes cloud watching, they compete to see who finds the clouds with weirder shapes

Aang gets Katara flowers every year on her birthday

Their first date was at Iroh’s teashop (mostly so Zuko could be there to calm Aang down)

They hold hands whenever Aang feels overwhelmed

Aang made Katara a total of 37 friendship bracelets and 16 bead necklaces

The two go ice skating every two weeks

Katara has at one point convinced each one of her friends to let her do the hair loopies on them at least once

Katara once fought a guy on an Ihop parking lot and she won

The guy was Hahn and she fought him because he called Sokka a wimp

Katara, Sokka and Hakoda cry every time they watch Balto

Katara and Zuko share Ever after as their favorite movie

Katara is a golden medal swimmer

Yue lost her hair due to chemo so she has a collection of pretty white wigs

Yue deffinetely cosplayed as Mara from She-ra

Piadao knows Zuko ever since he was five years old

He is actually both Zuko’s and Lu Ten’s godfather

One of his most prized possessions is a mug saying “world’s best godfather” that Zuko made on therapy and gave him for fathers day

Iroh has a matching but with “world’s best uncle”

Bumi and Aang became friends after Appa almost ran over him at a park, no one understands this friendship

Piandao and Zuko can communicate solely through nods and grunts, and both understand each other perfectly

*At the tea shop*

Piandao: *grunts and nods curtly*

Zuko: he wants the orange and spices tea and a croissant

*at Piandao’s dojo*

Zuko: *huffs and shakes his head*

Piandao: ah yes Zuko thanks for reminding me, i should see that with your uncle as soon as possible, do you think Jeong Jeong will be able to help?

Zuko: *grunts*

Piandao: no, you’re right, that’s a ridiculous idea

Iroh non-ironically loves crocs

Once he said “let me put them on sports mode” before getting out of the house and Zuko was this close to crying

Bumi is a croc enthusiast

He non-ironically loves the croc gloves

Bumi is the one who told Iroh about “four wheels drive”

The first time Sokka and Iroh quoted the “WHAT ARE THOSE” vine Zuko actually considered running away to live with Piandao

Jeong Jeong hates crocs with all of his being

Piandao dislikes crocs but he feigns ignorance just to watch the chaos unfold and Jeong Jeong get pissed

There’s a bet going on who’s gonna break Jeong Jeong first

Most of the bets are on Bumi

Piandao once wore a pair of crocs only to watch Jeong Jeong squirm and get all huffy

Sokka gave Iroh a teacup with little crocs painted on it for his birthday

Toph says crocs are the best kind of shoes because “they’re open”

Iroh has almost as many crocs as he has teacups

Oh boy oh boy oh boy!! I can talk about this SO MUCH (I will warn now, there will be some Zukka in this) okay so I guess I’ll start at the beginning...

Sokka was six when he started showing symptoms

It started with just some motor tics but everyone kind of just attributed it to this kid has a lot of energy ahhh

It became more noticeable when he kept almost killing himself with weapons because of his tics and slight carelessness

That’s one reason why he loves boomerang so much, none of the other weapons felt right to him and they would always get in the way of his tics, but he could throw boomerang and it would come back to him so he could keep throwing it and it made him feel calm

Then, Sokka started saying stuff that he didn’t mean to say, but again, everyone was just like hyper kid because it’s not like he was doing anything wrong

But they realized something was up when Sokka started yelling “FIRE NATION” without intending to and sending the whole tribe in a panic

So, Hakoda took Sokka to a nearby trustworthy Earth Kingdom village and that’s where Sokka got diagnosed with Tourette’s (and ADHD)

One of the things with Sokka is touch, like, he feels like touch is constricting and restraining sometimes. The problem is, he LOVES touch, he is a touchy person, but when someone touches him without telling him first or asking him, he doesn’t like it.

Sometimes he mentally shuts down when it happens, sometimes he tics more, the reaction depends on his anxiety levels and who touched him and when and where

The only people he gave a pass to was Kya and Katara. He didn’t even like it when Hakoda put a hand on his shoulder.

It was weird, he could feel the difference when Katara and Kya touched him compared to anyone else and he felt bad because he wanted his dad to hug him, but it felt so wrong

So, Sokka loves touch, but he likes to initiate it

So, moving forward, Sokka and Katara meet Aang, he’s the Avatar, they join and you know, there’s Aang the Avatar, Katara the Waterbender, and Sokka the guy with Tourette’s on the team

At least, that’s how they are known amongst the Fire Nation

Going undercover is so fun for Sokka, but he also has to be really conscious of what he’s doing and what he says and trying to suppress

It takes a lot out of him, but he knows he literally has to do it or he could get caught or expose them and Aang or Katara could get caught

On occasion, he has tic attacks (and for those who don’t know, they’re essentially a really bad TS day or moment where your tics are more consistent and seem to hurt more or you just have like an unending moment of tics where you just can’t stop for a little while. They are usually caused by anxiety or overstimulation or something like that, but they differ for everyone with TS)

The first time it happened in front of Aang, the sweet child panicked because he didn’t really understand what was happening and why Sokka was doing that and really what TS was

Katara is an angel, seriously. She is so sweet to Sokka when this happens and she knows exactly how to ground him and help him get through it

(Seriously, Sokka appreciates her so much. She is genuinely the one exception and anytime she wants a hug or any kind of touch she is allowed to do it)

the first time it happens in front of Toph when she joins is in Bitter Work when Sokka was in the hole

Just looking at Sokka in the whole sends my anxiety up because he literally can’t move! So like, imagine being in a hole for like five hours+ and needing to move like physically and you can feel the sensation in your body and it hurts and burns and tingles but you can’t. Sokka is not having a good time

So, Toph drags him out of the hole and is freaked out because she can’t see what’s happening and it’s scary because Sokka is making noises and hyperventilating and his heart rate is through the roof and Aang ran to get Katara and she can’t touch him because when she pulled him out of the hole he shrieked

She’s cool with it after that, she doesn’t think of him any less or anything, but it terrified her the first time because no one told her he had TS because they forgot to mention it and she couldn’t see what was happening

We all know that Sokka loves Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors with his whole entire heart and once they kicked his butt and helped him learn that sexism is bad, they were so fun to work with?? They taught him their style, obviously, but they also helped him incorporate his TS into it and how to use it to his advantage, something he had been struggling with his whole life

One of the things Sokka loved most about Yue is that she never even mentioned his sounds or movements she just let him do it without questioning him and that doesn’t happen a lot

I feel like Sokka having TS would make his time with Piandao even kore meaningful because he really struggles to keep his hands still so sword fighting does not come naturally to him

Piandao loves it though because it just makes Sokka even more clever and resourceful and he takes his time with Sokka, helping him as much as he can and never getting angry or anything when he can’t stand still

He also added more to what Sokka learned from the Kyoshi Warriors about incorporating his TS into his fighting and using it to his advantage

Not only was his sword an extension of his arm, but his TS was an extension as well

Did Toph and Aang help Sokka incorporate his tics into their scams? Yes, yes they did

Zuko joining the team was weird for Sokka because they kind of just clicked and he realized that they both have a weird thing with touch

On the balloon to Boiling Rock, Sokka is just comfortable around Zuko and his tics are like “cool yeah, have a break” and so he doesn’t tic and Zuko just “why aren’t you ticcing?”

and Sokka is ??? “Huh?”

and Zuko “You usually tic but you aren’t now. Why?”

and Sokka essentially explains that TS is weird and random and sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t, but he’s really comfortable and calm so his body is like “ye, let’s chill for now”

and Zuko is like “oh. that’s good. I kinda miss it though”

and Sokka d i e s because what?? Someone likes his tics enough to miss them? Like, they don’t annoy Zuko and he doesn’t tune them out?

and the bender goes on to explain that he likes the noises, they remind him that he is doing the right thing and that he’s here and he didn’t hurt team Avatar and they’re just comfortable / pleasing to the ear

and Sokka DIES

but then Zuko is like mmm maybe you should stay in the balloon and I’ll go to Boiling Rock and Sokka got pissed because he thinks Zuko said it because he’s a nonbender and he starts panicking and ticcing and Zuko panics and kind of just grabs his hand and Sokka... Sokka doesn’t hate it? Like, it feels nice and doesn’t agitate him?

but Zuko was like no I mean because everyone in the Fire Nation guard knows about the guy on team Avatar with TS and I don’t want you to get hurt

At one point in the prison courtyard, Sokka verbally tics really loudly about the moon and some guards hear and head to where they are so Zuko covers for him by screaming about how much he loves the moon

One of the worst moments in Sokka’s life was when Toph was falling and he grabbed her, but he wanted to tic and he knew that if he did, Toph would fall and die and he couldn’t do that, he couldn’t

(he still has nightmares about it happening)

when Sokka becomes an ambassador, some people are pissed because well 1) Watertribe 2) he’s a child 3) they suck 4) they think he’s distracting with his tics and Zuko is not here for it so he will destroy them

Like one time (after they started dating) Zuko overheard some councilors mocking Sokka’s tics and he got PISSED like so pissed and he went off and the found Sokka and hugged him because he is allowed to

oh! Sokka and Zuko’s thing is like hand-holding okay? They both kind of hate it because weird touch stuff, but it’s okay when they do it to each other?? Like, it feels right and like they’re completed and whole and it’s nice

before they start dating, they kind of do it a lot. Like, night before Zuko’s coronation, Sokka finds Zuko and he’s freaking out because what if he ends up like his dad and Sokka kind of just... grabs his hand and they sit there

Sokka is panicking because chronic pain and the cold of home makes it worse and Zuko finds him crying in the library and just... holds his hand

Zuko keeps little things on him all the time like paperclips and paper and writing utensils and things that click and buttons and stuff so if Sokka looks stressed during a meeting he can slip something under the table to him so he can play with it

Sokka also draws a lot during meetings, like, he doesn’t look at anyone throughout the whole meeting, even when he talks. He is able to focus more and pay more attention when he is doing something with his hands so he draws and doodles and sometimes takes notes

Sometimes he just writes the same word or sentence over and over again throughout the whole meeting

Sokka has sensory issues and a lot of noise stresses him out

It’s kind of the opposite of Zuko’s sensory issues? Like, Zuko doesn’t like loud noises and Sokka doesn’t like kind of static-y noises, like... when things sound muffled or muted or people are talking kind of quietly over each other

(Zuko definitely gives Sokka massages when his tics hurt a lot)

Random, but after awhile “yip yip” became a verbal tic of Sokka’s. Sometimes, he would say “you need to yip yip” and then he’d apologize to Appa and tell him that he’s yipping just fine

Toph is kind of like Zuko in how she likes Sokka’s verbal tics

She can’t see-see, but hearing his tics is nice sometimes, especially when she worries

She likes falling asleep to some of his tics

Even though Katara and Zuko are allowed to touch him whenever they want, more often than not they ask first because friendship is magic

Suki is lovely, okay? Like, just her presence is enough to make him feel better and she approaches helping him in a different way, she just talks to him and asks him questions to help him take his mind off of it

Sokka really doesn’t hate his TS, like, yeah, sometimes it pisses him off more than he can even explain, but it’s a part of him and as much as he cherishes when he can sit still, it’s wrong, it’s not him? He sits weirdly in chairs and changes his position every two minutes, he rocks his legs in his sleep, he sometimes even finds his own tics grounding...

Over time and with help from his friends, he learned to not be ashamed and that having TS didn’t make him ant less of a warrior

also, he, Toph, and Zuko are the disabled club✌🏻(and it makes them feel better sometimes in their own little way)

I have a lot more I could say but this is already pretty long, so I’ll end this sweet with Katara is amazing and Sokka’s relationship with her is wonderful and she knows how to help him with his tics in the way that Zuko does and can help center him like no one else and Sokka just loves her so much

anyway no one asked but: yue joins the gaang instead of becoming the moon at the end of season 1 hcs!!

- instead of giving up her life to replace tui as the moon spirit, she gives up tui’s blessing to give them the final burst of strength to escape from zhao. basically yue gives up her blue eyes, pale hair, and waterbending. she never (?) waterbends on the show, and the loss of her bending isn’t too devestating to her.

- also sokka gets a friend who can’t bend either... he deserves it.

- when the gaang leaves after the battle is over, yue decides to come with them and it’s a HUGE thing with her father and begins her main character arc, which is about whether her responsibility to her tribe and the preservation of their culture is more important than her paving her own way and also how those two things can coexist!

- she leaves her betrothal necklace on her bedside table and the last shot of the episode is just of it, lying there.

- this got rly long so there’s more under the cut

- her traveling clothes are a thing shawl and a tunic similar to sokka’s with pants. she keeps her usual haircut but it’s tied with leather instead of the fancy hair things she used as princess. also she uses a hunting knife as a weapon

- she and sokka continue their weird not-dating-but-kind-of-dating dance for a lot of episodes and it’s generally awkward and easy comic relief. also more shots of yue blushing because she’s just so cuteeee

- there’s a scene of them stargazing where yue tells sokka the story of a pair of lovers who died and then remained best friends in all their future lives (because avatar friendships enduring through lifetimes and also friendship being just as important as romantic relationships)

- yue becomes friends with EVERYONE they meet IMMEDIATELY and everyone falls in love with her because she’s sweet and pretty and has a nice laugh.

- there’s a filler episode that’s just sokka and yue going shopping together and trying on lots of jewlery but the running gag is that yue keeps getting distracted with talking to other people and definitely flirting with every girl she runs into and sokka is always distracted with a pair of earrings or a set of rings and doesn’t notice. finally some random guy is like ‘man your girlfriend has been flirting with my sister this whole time... are you aware.” and sokka is immeditaly like ShE’s NoT mY GiRLfRiEnD and then like wait what

- so maybe yue is a lesbian. sokka is very distressed that he’s been trying to court someone who’s not interested so he talks with katara while she’s sewing or something and he’s like is yue gay?? and katara is like oh i don’t know. lots of people we know are queer. sokka: WHO??? katara: well, zuko. suki. sokka: ZUKO??? SUKI??? and this is when katara realizes her brother’s gaydar is nonexistent.

- yue tries being a vegetarian (to be nice to aang) but thinks nuts are gross so she and sokka go on hunting trips together. she’s Very Good at archery.

- also the episode where they watch toph wrestle?? she and sokka are SO on her side. it made me angry in the show that sokka wasn’t on her side but yue would convince him very quickly and they are very loud together.

- she also stays to talk to toph on the estate because she doesn’t look as suspect as the rest of the gaang so the guards don’t kick her out immediately (read: she’s good at conforming to elitist ideas of how people r meant to act and passes the rich kid test). she and toph sit in the garden and watch the moon (because the moon symbolizes yue’s perceived failure to sacrifice herself to save her tribe) and talk about how sometimes to live as yourself you have to skirt your responsibilities to your family. yue leaves a few hours later firmly friends with toph.

- she continues to be the one firmly on toph’s side in the toph/katara disputes that are in the first few episodes with toph. katara can’t hold it against her though because literally who could hold a grudge against yue she’s so incredible

- (ok we’re skipping a lot of time here bc i frankly do not remember everything that happened in book 2) her ba sing se tale is her uhhh going to the market to buy herself an iced tea because she’s gay and just having a good time being a no one. a girl she runs into at the cafe asks her to go on a walk around the city with her and it’s very sweet but yue does Not know this is a date so when the girl gives her a kiss she gets blushy and says something dumb

- also at the end of another episode we have a short scene of yue on the roof of their house in the upper ring, staring at the moon and touching the place on her neck where her betrothal necklace isn’t. then the camera switches to zuko, on the other side of the city, looking at the same moon and absently running his fingers through his hair where his topknot used to be

- yue and jet hate each other but yue still advocates for him because she sees how he’s been hurt and thinks that he deserves a second chance. i don’t know the funeral traditions for any of the nations but she does a quick northern water tribe blessing over his body before they run away.

- yue and mai are like.. yes we r gay..... yes we do flirt with each other while fighting sometimes.... yes we r the two knife fighters.. yes we are ALSO narrative foils

- yue looks SO GOOD in fire nation clothes but she keeps her usual hairdo because she deserves it. the fire nation propaganda makes her very angry, as does the institutionalized homophobia. she starts arguing with some guy over it and katara is ready to back her up and start fucking screaming and get arrested and sokka is like.. now. now is when i should talk to her.

- he drags her away and she’s like fuck dude i can fight my own battles and he’s like no i just.. what you were talking about.... i have something i need to tell you..... and she’s like you’re bi!! good for you, sokka, thank you for telling me. and he’s like :bi shock: no?? you’re a lesbian. anyway yes she is a lesbian they are wlw mlm solidarity.

- there’s a filler episode where toph and yue rob a bunch of fire nation soldiers and when they get caught (after a While of these robberies) they get out of it by playing the ‘dumb rich kids’ card and run away with jewelry like.. dripping off their hands. katara makes them sell all of it except a choker necklace yue keeps that looks like a betrothal necklace but instead has an etching of a bird flying away.

- skipping again bc this is getting rly long. when zuko joins the gaang he and yue have a tentative conversation about their relationships to their nations and he’s like.. idk sounds like you needed to leave? that wasn’t an environment that you can thrive in. and she’s like but i can change it! i need to be there to change it, and i left. and he’s like well no. some things are just toxic. i went back to my nation and it was terrible. and she’s like i have a responsibility to my PEOPLE and gets mad at him and she and katara r like angry at zuko team.

- yue’s life changing field trip with zuko is just them leaving on appa to go to a market and be normal teenagers. they both viewed each other as Fire Prince and Water Tribe Princess, but this lets them open up and realize concretely that that’s not all that they are.

- zuko apologizes for implying that the nwt was irreparable and explains that the fire palace wasn’t something he could fix and that trying just hurt him more. yue says that part of the reason she was angry with him was because he was right and that she felt so much more herself when she was away from her home. they finally reach the conclusion together that they have to become themselves before they can hope to change their cultures for the better.

- yue comes along to boiling rock but is v much background to zukka bromance. she hangs out with suki some (lots more yue blushing oc bc suki is BUFF) and does some dumb gay fighting with mai but they’re both bad at it because yue is busy mooning over suki and mai is busy protecting ty lee.

- ember island players still say she turned into the moon >:(

Aang - he's such a sweet good kid and he wants what's best for katara ( yes, people can ship zutara and love aang, i am looking right at u antis)

Mai - she finds love with ty lee and goes off to be a bounty hunter with jun and ty lee.

People who were practically waiting for it and will ship it hard:-

Iroh - will scream " MY OTP!" from the rooftops if he has to.

Hakoda - has already declared zuko as his son in law.

Ursa - gives subtle hints to both of them.

Toph - complains that she is getting an earache from the way their hearts race and to get a move on.

The whole frickin palace staff ie guards, maids, palanquin bearers, workers, servants - make plans to set them up since they love katara and zuko.

King Kuei and Bhumi - how have i never thought of this before, they would love it. Bhumi relentlessly teases them.

Sokka - wholehearted blessings to them. He might threaten zuko that if he hurts katara, he'll probably kill him. Other than that 😆😆.

Azula - after a lot of mental therapy and after Ursa comes back. ( i'm just gonna pretend the comics don't exist because i hate absolutely HATE what they did to her in the comics) she will ship it. I live for katara and azula friendship and zuko and azula bonding.

Jin - will give katara tips that zuzu is really shy and to make the first move bcz he definitely won't.

Lee and his family from the Earth kingdom - after zuko comes to visit them and sets things right.

Yue - will intensely fangirl with the other spirits.🌙🌙

Gran Gran - will interrogate zuko thoroughly and will then ship it.

Jun - the original zutara shipper, respect for this queen. 😎

Ty lee and suki - they would be internally screaming " JUST KISS " whenever they see zuko and katara

Now moving on to the animal kingdom :-

Momo and Bosco - C'mon, we know they will.

The turtleducks in the pond - turtleducks always help another awkward turtleduck in need. ( even the turtleducks ship it , lol)

Can i just point out that that whatever u may ship, no one not mai not sokka or anyone else will ever love those turtleducks as much as katara. That is a fact. ( If u ask me, that one reason is enough to ship zutara). She would make waves and ice slides for them to play about. And they would absolutely adore her.

recently saw a post abt tysuki and how op liked them but didn’t feel like they would last, so here’s my thoughts on how long some ships would last bc I’m really bored:

kataang: endgame obviously

sukka: also endgame (i like tysuki and yueki but im a sucker for sukka)

tyzula: endgame but only after Azula heals and properly redeems herself

maiko: endgame for a while but I imagine them getting divorced, but with no hard feelings and they’re still close; the just love died out

yueki: in canon, would not work at all lmao yue dead as hell, but in fanon where yue somehow survived they might’ve had a crush on each other but that’s abt it

tysuki: kinda like yueki but they actually dated for a little bit (when suki moved back to kyoshi island she temporarily broke up with sokka seeing as they couldn’t make a long distance relationship work)

zukka: basically tysuki but when they’re old and suki has died and mai divorced zuko

jinzula: i imagine them happening when azula is slowly healing. I personally think she traveled to the earth kingdom just to get away from the hellhole that was the fire nation, and then jin asked her out. then when Azula comes home she’s like “oh yeah and I dated this cute girl named Jin” and zuko spits out his tea

mailee: ty lee probably developed a crush on her during their time in the boiling rock but got over it once they went their seperate ways

maizula: I adore maizula but I simply don’t see them being endgame, tho I hc that they would’ve dated for a while after ty lee died and mai divorced zuko

sukitara: love the concept of them but I think katara likes seeing how happy sokka is with suki and even if she did have feelings for her she wouldn’t act on them

jetru: endgame if jet survived (probably didn’t but oh well)

aaaaAAAAHHH theatre kid mode: activate

aang: ummm the best singer EVER like bro is an airbender: hes got FANTASTIC breathe support. his directors always wanna cast him as the lead because hes also a triple threat (remember his dancing w katara??? remember how well he played pippinpaddleopsicopolis (i def spelled that wrong oops) manz can sing dance and act hes a star) BUT he always auditions for the comedic side kid characters because those are the ones he wants and no one else is funny enough to play them. it works out well since they have tenor king zuko to be the male lead.

katara: strongest belt you have ever heard in your LIFE. can riff like no other. but the thing is shes an alto so she never gets the parts she deserves because in my experience directors always favor the sopranos. however she is the BEST dancer no matter what cast she is in so she always gets these BEAUTIFUL solo dances and people flip out over them.

sokka: he thinks hes a tenor so he always tries to sing the high stuff (and he can! he does have the range and can hit the notes but he doesnt realize its straining his voice a little bit) so when he gets casted in a baritone role and fucking KILLS IT everyones like holy shit hes amazing. like katara hes got a pretty powerful belt but again if he tries to go too high hes gonna strain his voice. despite not being able to belt too too too high like tenor king zuko, his mix voice is very good and his falsetto is fucking amazing (jersey boys sokka from my yuekka senario last week anyone?)

toph: see you THINK shed be an alto but NOPE. she is a classically trained soprano because of her parents and her classical voice is fucking beautiful. never a dry eye when this girl sings. coukd easily be christine in phantom if she wanted. despite this due to her short height and small frame she is always cast as the little boy characters that are too big of roles to cast random little kids and too high for the other men. example: she was james in james and the giant peach and she was FANTASTIC.

zuko: tenor king.

suki: OUR LEADING LADY. started out as a mezzo soprano w a strong belt and evolved into a true soprano who can actually sing on pitch (no offense to my soprano friends out there. its just. in my hs. EVERY girl thoight they were a soprano. in reality we had two true sopranos. out of like 40 girls who thought they were sopranos. it was a nightmare.) zuko and suki are almost always paired up for the romantic leads in the shows and become besties because of it. very very good dancer as well. back to her voice. im thinking veryyyyy eva noblezada mixed with laura osnes.

azula: soprano queen azula for the same reasons zuko is a tenor king. however: due to the fact that she cannot act or dance for SHIT takes away from her singing talents. its okay tho! she still gets every female lead because no one else can sing like her. the director just makes sure to have everyone dance around her in big numbers and chooses shows where the acting isnt too hard. her school and zukos school are rivals and during hs musical award season it gets HEATED.

mai: alto queen. alto queen. alto queen. who is always playing the female villains and loving every minute of it? mai. her voice is low and haunting and very beautiful to listen to. it gives you shivers and goosebumps because how can her range go that low??? alto queen what more can i say. her raspiness is just *chefs kiss* the cherry on top.

ty lee: dancer first. girl cannot sing for her LIFE. literally so bad she cannot carry a tune at all. but her dancing and actor save her so she always gets the funny girl roles that dont require much ir any singing at all. she always tries her best tho! and by senior year of high school her voice is actually barely tolerable instead of downright painful to listen to. her dancing is on par with kataras and they always make ty lee do the show stopping acrobating tricks even if the show doesnt have that kind of vibe. shes just so energetic onstage that people go crazy for her tricks.

yue: soprano legend. her voice is literally a disney princess voice. she would get all the female leads but she gets stage fright and prefers being in the ensambke anyways. but seriously if you listen to this girls soft voice you will get tears. think denee benton and sierra boggess.

jet: TENOR PRINCE. always either zukos understudy or his best friend character. there have been multiple times when jet suited a role better than zuko wcting and dancing wise but they still have them to zuko because yk. tenor king zuko. favorite role by far was when he was judas in jesus christ superstar and zuko was jesus (jet stole the show in this one which is why its his favorite. he managed to steal the show even when zuko sang gethsemane. the ONLY reason im choosing this show for this hc is because tenor king zuko would fuckin KILL gethsemane and jet has major judas vibes. also judas is hot in this show WHOOPS)

I genuinely don't get why people say that Sokka and Zuko are gay and Katara is a token straight. Toph is a lesbeen and Aang is pan; I have seen people be like: "Zuko is gay; Sokka is gay; Toph is gay" and I have nothing against it, but could you please consider the fact that Sukka is a better ship than Zukka (in my oppinion!!!) and that it is canon, stripping Suki out of Sokka's life leaves us with a sexist bitch and Maiko did happen, they were in love and probability still are; (it does not mean I don't respect your fave ship though; be gay do crime)

I headcanon Sokka as bi because he is very feminine and he is amazing and gentle and he just gives me that vibe, but I think he preferes girl more since he did in fact communicate with girls only and had like 3gf (Yue, Suki and the girl from Toph's metalbenders who isn't really a girlfriend but a kid lmao)

Let me stay with the water siblings: Katara. I generally think that saying she is a token straight is like saying she is firenation. (cs it's the opposite) Katara falls in love with Aang because of how cute and childish and nice he is. She loves him cs he is wise and cs he helps her as many times as she helps him. Think about this for a moment: what if Katara wasn't darksinned and wasn't asian/inuit, we have a white girl, ok and now tell me her sexuality... My friends in rl say she would be a 100% pansexual (or bicon) Why? Cs it just fits. They literally say she is straight bc she is inuit. Wtf?!?! (we aren't friends anymore :D) If you still don't see the point let me tell you that Katara is pan. Just. Pansexuall, and no this is not a pun, don't tell me that she likes pans because she cooks, grow up - that's stupid and rasist and sexist

...Toph, people often make her ether a buch le$been (this is a joke and you spell it ledollarbeen, I thought it was funny...) or weird straight but that is rare, and I have mixed feelings about that, Toph is blind, she is disabled, please don't forget that; she doesn't know what the people look like, she will have to fall for their caracter if she even was interested in romantic love. In my oppinion I think Toph is ether asexuell and bi romantic, or she is just bi. Please don't forget that she did in fact have a crush on Sokka and also had two daughters with two different men. That doesn't mean you can't hc her as lesbian. You can hc her as ace/pan/straight/gay/a melon/omni if you want to.

And the same goes for Zuko. He is interested in girls, he had Mai and he loved her with all his heart. Please don't say she was the reason he found out he was gay. Zuko may give you gay vibes (idk how but k) but he is bisexual or demisexual, it just. feels right; See... he is not pan... He just isn't.

Azula: She is, in my oppinion, a le$been but I often forget about... Chan... So a) she is in fact hella gay cs no heterosexuell could be so scary and hot at he same time, here Chan was her gay awakening or b) she is bisexual but with a preference for girls (you know 1% boy and 99% girls) I like a more :D

Since we're here let me continue with the rest of the angels (they are not Ozai's angels they are just the angels I don't know who had the idea calling them after Ozai it is discusting; if they needed a name Azula's angels is more fitting or the best one is just fire angels)

Mai is the bisexual/demisexual. She was in love with Zuko and they were and are in love (I refuse to be ive the shit the comics tell us)

Ty Lee is bisexual but with a preference for boys since she did like Sokka, and she liked the boys in the beach episode simping for her (untill it got to stressful)

Ok our king and queen. Let's start with Aang cs Suki is my favourite and I will save her for last. Aang is a cool dude. He is amazing and soft but also badass and sassy. I think that hcing him as pan or straight is ok. Because it both fits. I personally hc him as omni. With a preference for girls (if that's how you call it) because he did only have a crush on Katara the whole time

Before the grande finaly of my baby and the cutest person alive let's talk about the goddess: Yue for a bit. Princess Yue. The moonspirit. The imoral spirit. The one that sacrificed herself. Yes. Bi with a preference for girls. She would just be a cottagecore le$been if Sokka wasn't there. Like. He was the only one she actually loved. And being the moonspirit is pretty gay you know... Or pan. Bi would fit her more. But pan is also good. Since she likes Sokka cs of his caracter.

Ok the queen herself. Badass warrior, preasonbraker, feminist, girlboss and all the other good stuff... SUKIIII. First of all: Suki would be so gay of not for Sokka. She litherally dressed him up like a woman and kissed him (even Sokka sais it when he explaines the invasion!!!) But since she does actually like Sokka I was thinking about pan Suki. She would never have fallen in love with him if he stayed a sexist bitch. She would have just killed him if Katara didn't interfere. I just. The facs tell me that she is pan. But my brain tells me that she is bi and I constantly don't know what she is. Plus she is the she/they highness. (But I will continue using she/her :c cs not everyone agrees with that and I totally see it and respect it.) in ny conclusion: Suki is queer, she doesn't care about her gender nore her sexuality so she just tells people she's queer and let's them guess never telling them what she actually is cs she herself still hasn't figured it out and isn't planning to uwu

Oh wait my bad Suki's gender is warrior and her sexuality is adorable badass.

fic request from @shrinkthisviolet: Aang-centric fic with the prompt “Rough day? Can I make it better?”

(Lavi I love and appreciate you and I hope you’re okay with me using my Flamey-O Noodles hc as a springboard for this fic but if you’re not just say the word and I’ll write you something different)

fic under the cut!

Aang was sulking in their room when Katara walked in.

“Rough day?” she asked. Aang nodded, and she sat down beside him. “Can I make it better?”

“Can you make ‘flameo hotman’ accepted modern Fire Nation slang?” Aang muttered.

Katara frowned. “I’m sorry, what?”

Aang pouted. “Okay, so Zuko invited me to go to that meeting with the Fire Nation council, right? Well, when I got there, I introduced myself and said ‘flameo, hotmen!’ And they all just stared at me like I’d grown a second head.”

Katara rubbed his shoulders. “So you’re upset because ‘flameo, hotman’ isn’t catching on?”

“It’s real Fire Nation slang!” Aang insisted. “Or at least it was, a hundred and twenty years ago. I don’t know why it fell out of fashion.”

Katara shrugged. “It’s been a long time, Aang. Sometimes things die out.”

Aang stared at her with wide eyes. “Do you think...” He took a deep breath. “Do you think maybe things that die out can come back?”

Katara wasn’t entirely sure what the real question was, never mind what the actual right answer to it could be. But she nodded. “If it’s meant to come back, it will.” She squeezed his hand. “We thought the Avatar was gone forever, and then we found you.”

Aang smiled and kissed her cheek. “Thank you, Katara. I love you.”

“I love you too,” she said, smiling back.

That night, Aang lay awake, thinking about the past. This wasn’t an uncommon occurrence for him; the first few weeks traveling with Sokka and Katara, he’d barely slept, thinking about how everything and everyone he knew was gone, and he was alone in a world that didn’t understand him. But he wasn’t alone, and he never had been. Sokka and Katara had made sure of that, and then Suki, and then Toph, and Zuko.

Zuko.

Flameo.

He remembered it clear as day. The monks had just told him that he was the Avatar, and they wanted him to train in etiquette so that he could meet with dignitaries from other nations. Aang didn’t really understand what more he needed to learn, considering he had friends from all over the world, but the monks had insisted. So there he was, reciting from an etiquette book while Monk Gyatso made a pot of Aang’s favorite noodles.

“A popular informal greeting among Fire Nation citizens is ‘flameo, hotman.’“ Aang giggled. “That one’s good. I’ve got to use that on Kuzon next time I see him.”

Monk Gyatso scooped up the noodles and vegetables and put half a hard-boiled egg on top of Aang’s plate, with the other half on top of his own. “I like that one too,” he said, handing Aang his noodles. “I had an old friend, when I was just about your age, who really enjoyed that greeting.”

“Were they Fire Nation?” Aang asked, his mouth full of noodles and vegetables.

“Eat slower, Aang. Savor your food. And yes, he was Fire Nation” Gyatso said, a little sadly. “He came to stay with us for a while, and we became great friends.”

Aang shoveled more of Gyatso’s noodles in his mouth. Spirits, this is so good. “Gyatso,” Aang asked. “When we’re done with the lesson, can you teach me how to make noodles?”

Gyatso laughed. “Not exactly the most necessary skill for a young Avatar.”

“Well, what if the Earth King wants a good meal? I want to have something to make for him,” he said. “Come on, please? I’ll be good, I promise.”

Gyatso looked at Aang fondly. “You already are good, Aang. You always have been.” He rubbed Aang’s head affectionately. “i think you know quite enough about how to talk to foreign dignitaries. Come on, let’s make some noodles.”

So Gyatso took Aang through the steps of making the noodles: making a well in the flour to put the eggs and water in, mixing it with his hands, kneading them, rolling them out, slicing them. Gyatso cut up some more vegetables while Aang was slicing the noodles, and they put all the ingredients in a pot to boil for a couple minutes. When it was done, Gyatso gave them each second and third helpings.

“Flameo, hotman,” Gyatso said slyly.

Aang grinned. “Flameo.”

Katara snored beside him, snapping him out of his memory. The moon hung high in the sky, and Aang could practically feel Yue scolding him, telling him it was long past time to go to bed. He turned on his side, trying to clear his mind. And then he turned again, and again. But nothing worked.

Finally, he sat up. He wanted noodles.

It had been over a century since that day, but Aang still remembered. His technique was a little clumsier than Gyatso’s had been, but it was a simple recipe nonetheless. He hummed as he chopped up his vegetables and sliced the dough into noodles, before tossing all of it in a pot and waiting for it to boil.

As he set the pot over the fire, he saw Katara, groaning as she rubbed her eyes. “Aang, what are you doing?”

He smiled at her. “I’m making noodles.”

She frowned at him. “In the middle of the night?”

“I just--” He sighed. “I’m sorry for waking you up, but I, um.” He scratched the back of his neck. “I wanted noodles.”

Katara rubbed at her eyes, and smiled blearily at him. “Can I have some?”

So Aang pulled out two bowls, one for him, and one for Katara, and scooped some noodles and vegetables into both of their bowls. He sliced a hard-boiled egg in half, putting one half in his noodles, the other half in Katara’s, and set the bowl in front of her.

She raised an eyebrow. “All right, let’s see if these middle of the night noodles are any good.”

She gingerly ate a little bit, and her eyes went wide. “Tui and La,” she breathed.

“What?” Aang asked. “Do you like them?”

“Do I like them? Do I like them?!?!? Aang, this is almost as good as Bato’s sea prunes.”

Aang raised his eyebrows. “Oh, that’s... that’s great!”

Katara kicked him lightly under the table. “They’re really, really good Aang. You know,” she said, stuffing more noodles in her mouth, “If you ever get sick of the whole Avatar thing, you could be a really great chef.”

“Thanks, Katara,” he said. “I can make them for you again. Any time you want.”

Katara nodded vigorously. “You’d better.”

He ended up making them quite a lot, actually. A few weeks after middle of the night noodles, Katara found out that she was pregnant, and there was many a night where she poked at his side and mumbled, “Noodles?” His technique improved every time he made them, and he loved watching her face light up every time he made them for her.

Bumi was born, and for a while he was too wrapped up in figuring out how to be a good dad to think about the noodles. But he thought of Gyatso, often. Wondering what he would think of Bumi, of Katara, of the life that he’d made for himself. Of how he’d handled being the Avatar. Of how he’d survived the unsurvivable, and held onto the memory of the Air Nomads while he did so.

When Bumi turned a year old, Katara decided they should invite everybody over for dinner to celebrate. “You can make those noodles!” she suggested excitedly.

Aang laughed. “I would think you were sick of those.”

“Oh, I am,” she said. “Just a little bit. But everybody else hasn’t tried them, and it is so hard trying to figure out something that Zuko and Suki will both like. But I don’t see how either of them could not like the noodles.”

Aang agreed, and so he served the noodles to all of his friends, to their absolute delight. “You really can cook, Twinkle Toes,” Toph said, whistling.

“This is amazing, Aang,” Suki said. “Almost as good as sea prunes.”

“This is way better than sea prunes,” Zuko said, holding out his bowl. “Can I have some more?”

Somehow, every time Aang and Katara went to go see Suki and Sokka, or to the Fire Nation to see Zuko, or to the Earth Kingdom to visit Toph’s metalbending academy, they always managed to bring up the noodles. “You should have brought some,” Toph grumbled. “Could really go for some Twinkle Toes noodles right now.”

“I wouldn’t call them ‘Twinkle Toes’ noodles,” Aang scoffed.

Toph raised an eyebrow. “Really? Then what would you call them?”

And before Aang could even think about it, he said, “Flamey-O. Flamey-O Noodles.”

Toph burst out laughing. “You’re really never going to let that go, are you, Twinkle Toes?”

Aang shook his head. “Nope. I’m bringing it back.”

“Well, you know, if you ever wanted to turn ‘Flamey-O Noodles’ into something real, one of my students’ moms is in the restaurant business.”

Aang stared at her. “You mean you want me to make this into... a business? I don’t have time for that.”

Toph shrugged. “All right. Just something to consider.” She smirked. “You know, if the name Flamey-O was plastered all over Ba Sing Se, saying ‘flameo, hotman’ might come back into style. And not even just in the Fire Nation, either. All over the world.”

Aang’s eyes glinted mischievously. “What did you say your student’s mom’s name was?”

“I must say, it’s not every day the Avatar is approaching me for a business venture. I’m quite honored to be in your presence, your grace.”

“It’s nice to meet you too! You can just call me Aang, though. In fact, I’d prefer it.”

Bao was a short, stout woman, probably twice Aang’s age (without considering the time he spent in the iceberg.) She had a warm presence that he liked immediately, although she did seem to be making a lot of the whole “Avatar” thing.

“Spirits, I’m on first name basis with the Avatar,” she breathed in awe. “Come, come, sit, please, tell me how I can serve you best, your-- Avatar Aang.”

“Just Aang,” he said quickly. “And I’m more interested in serving you... some of my noodles!” He set a bowl in front of her. “They’re not fresh, sorry, but I think they’re still really good.”

She frowned. “Noodles? Av-- Aang, don’t you have Air Acolytes waiting on you hand and foot? Why would you make your own noodles?”

He laughed nervously, scratching the back of his neck. “No, they don’t wait on me hand and foot, although I’m sure if I gave them the opportunity they’d jump at it. But, um. Well, I learned how to make these noodles from the monks, and my wife and my friends seem to really like them, and my friend Toph knew you from the metalbending academy, and she said that you could get these noodles out to a lot of people. So I wanted you to try them, and maybe we can talk about going into business together?”

Bao stared at him. “You do realize that what you’re proposing is absolutely preposterous, right?”

Aang’s eyes widened. “But you haven’t even tried them!”

“It’s not about the noodles, Ava-- Aang. Aang. Look, I am absolutely wonderful at the food business, but I had certain values instilled in me from when I was a child, and one of those values was absolute and total reverence for the Avatar.”

“But can’t you just try them?”

“The Avatar is supposed to bring balance to the world, manage international conflicts, mentor all of us in the values of wisdom and serenity, and you want me to eat your noodles?”

She stared at him expectantly, and Aang shifted in his seat. “Well. Yes.”

Bao narrowed her eyes at him, and looked down at the bowl. “All right, then. If that’s what you wish, Avatar.”

“Just Aang is fine.”

She ignored him and stuck her chopsticks into the noodles, chewing very slowly. Savor your food. There was no expression on her face as she kept chewing, just a furrowing of her brow.

“Have you made this dish often, Aang?” she asked.

He nodded. “I made it a lot while my wife was pregnant, and then my friends kept asking for some, and--”

“Stop,” she said. She took another bite and continued chewing. “If I were to go into business with you, you would want to call the company what?”

“Um, Flamey-O Noodles, ma’am.” Her expressionless chewing had suddenly made him feel very small.

“Well, it’s certainly distinctive,” she mumbled. “Though I don’t know how well it would go over with people in the Fire Nation.”

“Are you--are you saying you’ll go into business with me?”

“Aang, those noodles are quite simply the best I’ve ever eaten,” Bao said matter-of-factly. “And I’m not saying that because you’re the Avatar. In fact, I would say that even if you were a toad-pigeon. And I hate toad-pigeons.” She smiled, finally, and Aang let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding. “I would be absolutely delighted to help you in creating Flamey-O Noodles.”

He got up from his seat and wrapped her in a hug. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

“Avatar Aang, this is rather improper,” she said, but it was somewhat muffled by his chest. When they pulled apart, she shook her head at him. “In business, we shake hands.”

“Right.” He took her hand and shook it. “I promise, you won’t regret it!”

“I imagine I won’t,” she said. “Now, let’s talk packaging....”

Zuko and Mai were on their evening walk through the city, disguised so that no one would recognize them as Firelord and Lady. As they moved towards downtown Caldera City, they stopped in front of a large poster with the words “Flamey-O Noodles!” in bright neon yellow, beside Aang’s smiling face.

As somebody passed by them, they raised their hand in greeting. “Flameo, hotman!”

“What? What are they talking about?” Mai asked.

Zuko groaned. “I hate him.”

Fashion Headcanon

the fashion hc that no one asked for... (think college age)

Aang

Aang is all about comfort mixed with practicality and a hint of fashion/trendiness

Most days you’ll find him in athletic shorts or sweatpants in neutral tones like gray or white, with a plain tee

He also lives in his yellow high tops that are more dirt than yellow at this point. They’re super worn in and comfortable for him now, but it’s unusual to see him without them

But when he needs to dress up for events or dates or whatever, he likes to look nice but still casual

His idea of dressing up would be khaki pants (maybe joggers for casual dates) with a white button down/polo

One time he showed up to an event in his yellow converse so Katara got him some nice brown dress boots so he has /options/

You’ll also never find him in any cool tones, he loves warm colors (yellows, oranges, reds)

He’s overall a pretty happy and chill guy and that reflects in his clothing but he still has a grasp on what is acceptable in certain situations and definitely dresses appropriately

For the most part he just looks really snuggly and soft

Katara

Katara also really values comfort but she takes a little more pride in her appearance

For everyday wear she’ll usually wear jeans of some kind (usually distressed and mom style) but she’ll still look put together

If she’s wearing her blue jeans, she’ll pair them with a loose band tee that’s either cropped, tied in the front, or tucked in precisely (she loves showing the waist of her pants)

If she’s wearing black/white jeans, she’ll wear a blue shirt. She prefers navy and darker tones of blue but she has a quite a few in pastel as well

Sometimes the shirts are just tshirts, but sometimes they’re a little tighter and trendier to help her dress up the outfit

For the most part she lives in her doc martens, and she finds them to be both practical and adorable

However for fancier events she pops off

She’ll dress up in satin dresses that are navy and fall just below her knee or will wear white corduroy skirts with cute flowy tops

She has platform sneakers for when it’s not too fancy but she also has a lot of heels and sandals in neutral colors

Even though Katara does like to look good, because it makes her feel good, she isn’t too overly worried about her appearance

However in most people’s eyes, she never looks bad and walks with an effortless beauty that makes all her outfits look great

Sokka

Sokka lives for practical clothing

He wears basketball shorts almost every day (unless it’s cold and then he wears sweatpants) with a hoodie or plain tee

While he’s not out naked, he definitely doesn’t really put that much effort into his day to day look

But honestly he doesn’t really need to because Sokka is a hottie who wows everyone he meets

But he also works out a lot and works with his hands, so practical clothing is generally the only thing he thinks is appropriate

When he’s working on something a little more hands on, he’ll wear denim to protect his skin and he doesn’t really care if they get ruined, because they’re his work pants

However when he dresses up… he is a stunner

He’ll wear form fitting pants that show off his toned thighs and butt. They’ll usually be either dark blue or black dress pants

He pairs that with a usually white (occasionally a lighter blue or black) dress shirt that is typically rolled up to his elbows but that’s good because his forearms

Despite the fact that he usually wears sneakers or boots every day, his shoe collection is pretty impressive because he’s a prepared man. So he wears nicer polo shoes or low cut brown boots to pull together the look

People never really expect Sokka to look as fine as he does at those events, because they’re used to seeing him very casual and comfy

But even though people think Sokka doesn’t care about his appearance, he does… he just doesn’t like to waste time on work/school days when he could sleep a little more

But when he can actually get dressed up, he kinda lives for it

For the most part, Sokka dresses how he pleases and doesn’t let others tell him what to do with himself

But he’s comfortable in his style and in his skin which makes him confident

Toph

Toph grew up with overbearing parents who dictated how she dressed, and so when she began to live on her own she really wanted to explore other styles and options

For a while she experimented with casual fancy styles like sundresses and skirts and such. And honestly she really likes them and thinks they’re cute, but not for day to day

She then evolved into more of a skater, tomboy look which she really rocks

She has a wide range of jean, khaki, and athletic shorts that she pairs with simple shirts

Her shirts are usually band tees, or plain colors and she really likes earth tones

She has likes oversized outerwear, like big flannels, hoodies, or bombers that kind of swallow her frame

She prefers shorts but when she wears pants, it’s usually sweatpants or yoga pants. She doesn’t like her bottoms to be too tight and restricting because she likes to have full range of motion, so if they’re tight they have to be stretchy

Also she kicks the bottom of all her shoes out so she can see (yes bending exists here and she’s blind bc I say so), but she mainly wears canvas sneakers like vans or low converses

Because she experimented early on with her outfits, when she has to dress up she really likes casual sundresses

Sometimes she’ll wear a jean skirt, but none of her dresses or skirts will be tight

She’s not necessarily trying to hid her body/curves but she’s just so much more comfortable in loose/flowy clothing and it still looks really good on her

Even at fancier events, she’ll wear sneakers because sandals don’t really work without bottoms and heels are a fat no

She has “nicer” sneakers that she keeps clean for those events but for the most part she has an excuse and a comeback to anyone who tries to diss her shoes

Like Sokka, she’s pretty comfortable in her clothing and doesn’t put too much effort into it

However, because of all the years she spent with her parents where she had zero options, it isn’t uncommon to see Toph trying the newest trends as soon as they come out, to see if she vibes with them or not

Zuko

Like Toph, Zuko was also forced to dress in a certain way due to his familial upbringing

In contrast though, he found a way to express himself through his clothes while still fitting into the expectations placed on him

Zuko lives in dark clothes. The only sense of color he has are dark red shirts/hoodies, one pair of grey sweatpants, and a deep navy shirt he stole from Sokka

Everything else is black

But that doesn’t mean they’re all boring and the same

A lot of his clothing has small details woven into the seams which shows that Zuko puts a lot of effort into the clothing he puts on

He mostly wears black jeans but he has a huge range of styles including skinny, distressed, boyfriend, baggy, and straight legged

He tends to focus on the bottom half more, styling his outfit around his pants and then pairing a simple tee

Kinda imagine an eboy vibe but more chill

He wears converses, vans, or other flat sneakers for the most part

When he needs to dress up, he still sticks to dark tones

His go to is black dress pants that are pretty tight and either a black or red button up

He has a few suits from growing up but he loathes them with a passion and prefers to look casual when dressing up

Zuko likes to put effort into his appearance because it helps channel his energy and he thinks that if he looks presentable, people will be less likely to judge him on his past or his scar

He gets pretty self-conscious and insecure when he tries new things, and it’ll take him a while to expand his closet into other styles

He’s comfortable with his look and he isn’t too keen on trying new things but he isn’t completely opposed

Suki

Suki, much like Katara, has this look of effortless beauty

However for her, she does put effort into her outfit pretty much everyday

She also wears earth tones for the most part, but her closet does have a large variety

On the day to day she’ll wear skinny jeans, yoga pants, or athletic shorts with a cute top

Though her clothes aren’t that fancy, she matches them all really well and her makeup is always impeccable

Her top selection is bigger and is made up of mostly cropped tees and tighter crop tops

However, her guilty pleasure is large sweaters and hoodies that she’s stolen from her guy friends and it’s pretty common to find her styling those with jeans and cute shoes

She also has a pair of red high tops, that much like Aang, she has worn down to the point where they’re more dirt than anything

And while she doesn’t wear them every day, they’re definitely a staple in her closet

But suki honestly lives for platform sneakers, they don’t have to be super tall but anything that gives her a little lift makes her that much more confident

When she dresses up, she shares a lot of the same styles with Toph

She really likes sundresses with sneakers, or rompers with sandals

However when she really has to get fancy, she’ll wear longer dresses that fall below her knee or all the way to the floor with a pair of heels and she’ll be feeling herself

Suki is overall pretty adventurous with her outfits, but she also knows what she likes

She’ll try the new trends and take suggestions from her friends, but she’s also not scared to say no and go comfy yet put together for a day

She’s one of those girls that kinda looks great in everything and people really wish they had her closet but half the time she’s borrowing things from friends to piece together outfits

Yue

Yue loves clothes

Simple as that

She grew up with money, but without the overbearing parents and she’s always had an affinity for dressing up and following the new trends as well as the older ones

She finds that waking up and making herself look good, gets her ready for the day and helps put her into the right headspace

She also lives for light pastels, typically of the cooler hues but sometimes she’ll venture into the pinks and reds

On the day to day she’ll wear either light blue or white bottoms (you name it: skirts, shorts, pants, whatever) and a plain shirt

A lot of her clothing has lace on it, it’s just something that Yue really likes

And all the light colors look amazing against her dark skin

She wears chunky sneakers or flats mostly, because they’re cute but also comfortable to walk in

She also usually has an accessory, whether it be a purse, sunglasses, or a cute bandana, she likes to add little things that pull her outfit together

She definitely looks better than most on the day to day because she really enjoys looking nice

However she still has the skill of not looking overdressed

When she dresses up, she looks ethereal

Like Katara, she likes satin and silk a lot because it’s comfy and soft and often falls effortlessly

She tends to wear dresses that are just at her knee or are tea length, and doesn’t really like floor length dresses

The only really short stuff she wears are her skirts and shorts

She also really likes heels when she’s dressing up, and a slit in her dress to show off her legs

She’s super confident in her style and definitely loves finding inspiration from her friends, strangers, magazines and wherever she can find it

She also always looks amazing, even when she is dressed casually

Azula

Surprisingly, Azula isn’t really that flamboyant with her style

She likes simple looks like jeans and tshirts or a simple dress

She, like Zuko, wears darker colors but has a plethora of pink in her wardrobe because of TyLee

On the day to day she’s often wearing simple black jeans, a band tee or just a hoodie with doc martens

People find it surprising because Azula comes across as a big personality, and she definitely is around her friends, but she just isn’t that interested in fashion

She prefers to focus her energy and time on self-care like her nails, hair, and skin

Both Mai and TyLee are into fashion so Azula does let them dress her up and down for fun, but for the most part she’s pretty simple

For dressing up, she’s very simple

She’ll wear either a black or red dress, usually that falls just above or just below her knee

She likes a straight neckline but has few options (strapless, halter, etc)

And she’ll pair the dress with a simple black heel, not too many straps

She does like tall heels, it helps with her confidence, but they aren’t very flashy

Despite her basic style, she does understand the importance of looking presentable and doesn’t usually wear baggy clothing

She’s found a pretty good balance between casual, basic, but still presentable

basically she doesn’t need a boisterous closet because she is very talkative and loud with her friends, so she doesn’t feel the need to overcompensate with her clothing or anything

Mai

in complete opposite to Azula, Mai LOVES showing her personality through her clothes

she isn’t very talkative and instead likes to show her mood with her outfits

though she does wear dark colors, she’ll experiment with others

when she’s feeling sad, she covers up. She likes long sleeves, even if they are mesh or transparent, and long jeans with boots

She’s a slut for peasant sleeves (but I mean… me too)

when she’s happy, she’ll wear red or pink. She’ll stick with either jeans or a jean skirt that’s dark but she’ll pair it with a baggy dusty pink or vibrant red shirt that she tucks in. she’ll also wear trendier sneakers on those days (but they’ll probably still be boots)

when’s she’s feeling really good or adventurous she’ll dress more colorful. The style itself is pretty basic: jeans and a shirt, but she’ll wear her blue mom jeans. She’ll pair it with her purple doc martens and a white shirt with a different colored jacket

however it’s the days that she wears sweats, leggings and hoodies that she receives the most attention. The attention is always from her friends because on those days, she’s either feeling very comfortable in her surroundings and they want to talk to her, or she’s had a shit day and they want to help her feel better

when dressing up, she likes to wear black with fun accents like buckles or ribbons or fun sleeves or zippers or lace or anything like that

she’s pretty tall, so she doesn’t often wear heels but she’ll wear fishnet tights and tuck them into some boots or she’ll wear flats

she does tend to wear clothes that are tighter and then pair them with baggy outerwear to offset the outfit

she does wear a lot of boots but she has them in a bunch of different colors for every emotion and outfit

people are pretty envious of her wardrobe and while she doesn’t really talk and isn’t that confident in herself, she’s always been sure of her style

she also really enjoys dressing her friends up and swapping styles to try to make new outfits

TyLee

TyLee also loves clothes

she’s pretty girly and used clothing from an early age to set herself apart from not only her sisters but also from society

in today’s terms she’d be a soft girl with a hint of vsco

there’s a lot of pinks, reds, purples, whites, and other pastels in her wardrobe

she tries to avoid dark tones because she thinks they wash her out

she’s also very bubbly and upbeat for the most part and likes to convey that in her outfits

she wears a lot of tennis skirts, plaid skirts, paper bag shorts, and other stuff that kinda looks like it came from a teen movie

she doesn’t really like pants but if she does wear them, they’ll be loose and typically have a paper bag waistline

and they’ll definitely be high waisted no matter what

her tops are typically crop top tanks or fuzzy sweaters that are just a tad too big

she also really likes to wear long cardigans and sweaters that fall below her hemline

every day she wears a white shoe

they’ll either be chunky sneakers, vans, sandals, high tops, or something else but they’ll definitely be white

people really don’t know how she keeps them clean

when she dresses up, she’ll wear tighter clothes but then offset them with a long or bigger jacket and sneakers

she hates heels

she thinks they are so uncomfortable and prefers sneakers or sandals

TyLee does like trying new stuff but she’s also really comfortable with her current style and isn’t that interested in trying a whole ton of new stuff

she also really likes dressing other people up, both in her own style and in theirs

she’s pretty confident in her clothes but her insecurities definitely bleed through sometimes, but she always tries to be happy no matter what and that definitely comes through in her clothes

Ok, but Suki writing songs and learning to play instruments (cs she is canonly in love with music and it is wholesome🥺🥺🥺) Sokka writing poetry and drawing 🥺

And then they write a(or more) song(s) about and for Yue and have come up with a dance they do when it's a full moon. They would dance around with war fans to the movements of the ocean and sing up to the moon. Every full moon. (Suki was Yue's secret lover!, but because of the nwt traditions and stuff they couldn't stay together :c idc if they met in canon or not)

Yueki fuels me with so much love and happiness, i fell in love with them bc of @fruitysokka 's Unconditionally and Irrevocably fic that i highly recommend you read if you enjoy Zukka and Yueki!

But Suki learning instruments and writing music? Thats the best thing ive heard all night! I mean, I can just see her picking up on that kind of thing really easily. Learning as many instruments as possible. I feel like, because of the nature of atla, she learned all of it by ear and not really at all by the written sheet music which makes her really good at transferring knowledge of one intrument to the next. I feel like writing music comes easily to her as well, not being restricted by pen and paper and just being able to play something until it sounds just right. I can just see her chilling around a fire with the rest of the gaang while she just sings soft songs for them and plays whatever comes to mind. (Also could you imagine her just singing quiet lullabies to Yue whenever she has bad dreams at night? Brushing hair away from her face, leaving soft little kisses on her temples, soothing the lines from between her eyebrows. Soft Yueki being able to just love each other under the cover of twilight? Ugh i wanna be able to love someome like that.)

Sokka writing poetry is literally one of my favorite things oh my gooood!!! I used to write a lot of poetry (oof its all pretty bad looking back on it) and honestly, i feel like Sokka has such a way with words. I love the hc that he gets stage fright/anxiety when talking to huge groups so i love the idea of him being so eloquent in his writing when he cant be in speech. I know Sokka gets made fun of for his drawings a bit but artist Sokka also fuels my heart and love for atla. Drawing and painting is hard and it takes a lot of practice! Art is art and no art is bad art. I feel like the more Sokka really gets into his art, the better he becomes and the more he gets to express himself and his feelings. (Also, sorry im super tired bc i should be sleeping rn and im not so i might ramble a lot but tattoo artist Sokka literally never leaves my mind). So hell yeah artist/poet Sokka is 100% a thing because i said so!

But i can just see what you're talking about, I can feel the emotions that would come along with that. Building a huge bonfire on a beach somewhere, doing it all by hand without the help of any benders. Getting dressed in a mix of nwt/swt colors and Kyoshi gear, in ceremonial outfits they made just for their full moon rituals. I can hear the way they would start soft and slow, their movements gentle, almost as if in mourning the loss of someone so dear to them. I can hear how the song would crescendo gradually throughout the night, their voices carrying high into the night air as they celebrate the love and life that Yue had within her. The smell of the smoke, the sound of the song, the feel of shifting sand beneath their feet as they twist and twirl and dance around, the taste of the sea salt in the wind, and just that pure soft image of Yue looking down from the spirit world and feeling nothing less than an overflowing abundance of love in her heart.

I feel like for the first few full moons, Suki and Sokka do this by themselves. But after a while, i feel like the others slowly join in. Katara comes when the tide is too high and she parts the ocean around them long enough for them to complete their ritual. Aang joins in and learn their dance. Hes the one who suggests adding in the fans and he has special fans made just for their tradition. Toph joins and creates a special rock formation, a stage almost, right on the beach for them to build their bonfire on, tide in or out. She also brings a drum and provides a quiet beat for them to dance to. Zuko joins and adds his own song into the mix. While he dances, he signs and sings and mourns a girl he never knew because he knows what its like to be used as a pawn in a war. And Yue, though they cant see her, comes and joins their dance around the fire. And each full moon, before they pack everything up, she brushes gentle kisses on each of their foreheads and blesses them. Every single time. Its not long before they know shes there, somehow, watching over them too. (Maybe one day, Azula joins them too, joins in the dancing and mourning and celebration because she gets it. Redemption arc Azula is something i desparately want and love)

sokka has been the competition since day one. he’s the only person in this godforsaken den of idiots who can remotely keep up with her trenchant mind. she despises him, naturally.

every week, zuko hears her rehearse debate strategies on the way to school, and he feels that trademark mix of irritation and concern he feels for her whenever she is doing something particularly on-brand. “i’m going to crush sokka today,” she announces to him proudly. “i’m going to destroy him.” zuko sighs, rolls his eyes, and proclaims, “for the last time, azula, i don’t know who that is!”

sokka is confused as to why a freshman he doesn’t know approaches him in the halls today to say “i see someone doesn’t seem to care about their so-called perfect attendance record.” and sokka’s really tired so he’s just like, “i was at my girlfriend’s funeral. is that okay with you, random child?? is that allowed???” azula just narrows her eyes and says, “hm. lucky save.” this actually gets sokka to laugh for the first time all week.

sometimes sokka will complain to katara about the young republican in his debate class. oftentimes katara will complain to sokka about the girl on the team who’s always taunting her for no goddamn reason. they get way more excited than they should the day that they realize that they are talking about the same person. sokka suddenly forgives katara for all those times he had to pick her up from detention for getting into fistfights during practice, because yeah, he’s heard her stance on affirmative action, so perhaps she simply got what she deserved :)

the first time azula sees zuko talking to sokka in the halls, she is shaken to her core. she knew he was ruthless, a master tactician, but what kind of cruel gambit is this??? she demands that zuko tell her everything they were talking about. zuko’s like “you know that cardigans album ‘first band on the moon’???” and azula, who would never wear nor listen to a cardigan, is just like “what kinda 5D chess is he playing..........”

azula is desperate to know what sokka got on his SATs. he won’t tell her, because why the fuck would he. it keeps her up at night. eventually he gets sick of her incessant texting, so he blocks her number. she hacks into zuko’s phone and writes, “’Sup, bro? Did you get your SAT results back too? How’d you do?” and sokka just responds, “hi zuko! what a normal question!” and then lets zuko know the next day at school that azula stole his phone.

sokka actually raises his voice one time in debate. it is during a resolution that “colonialism has its benefits, actually.” he manages to stay level while explaining his position, but some kid in the back nods thoughtfully while azula is spouting nonsense, and sokka just points a finger at him and yells, “I SEE YOU NODDING, WHITE BOY.” katara oh so desperately wishes she had been there to witness that glorious moment, but since she’s not a nerd, she doesn’t do debate.

one lovely summer’s day, azula follows zuko all the way from home, waits a reasonable amount of time, and then just walks past them, lowers her sunglasses and goes, oh so casually, “zuzu? zuzu’s friend? can it really be you? why, whatever are you doing in the park?” zuko just responds flatly, “i thought you said that ‘parks are for vagrants and the poor.’” and azula’s like, “nonsense! i’m meeting mai and ty lee here right now.” sokka says, “but suki just sent me a picture of her with ty lee three minutes ago.” and zuko says, “and mai is babysitting tom tom because their au pair came down with tb.” azula mumbles that actually, she’s talking about someone else, and also what the fuck, do people even still get tb??? and zuko just frowns and says, “but azula, you don’t have any other friends.” she laughs and says, “shows what you know,” and saunters off, a confident stride in her step all the way home. at which point she locks herself in her room and screams into a pillow. meanwhile, at the park, sokka is like, “do people still get tb???” and zuko just shrugs and says, “i don’t know; i just felt like calling her bluff.”

azula thinks it is most outrageous that sokka is valedictorian considering that he has countless absences from his freshman and sophomore years. ty lee just blinks and tilts her head. “azula, how do you even know that?” she asks, at which point azula casually admits that she has copies of his entire record and all his grades. ty lee is very scared, but wisely does not inform sokka. better to let him live in blissful ignorance, she thinks.

her senior year is very dull without sokka. ty lee suggests that she find another hobby to replace it. azula’s just like “what are you implying????” but they both know ty lee chooses her words very deliberately. azula takes up archery.

she calls zuko once all year, and it is to inform him that she is going to harvard. he wishes her the best of luck, and then promptly hangs up. at harvard, which is in boston, perhaps you’ve heard of it, she does the engineering and the pre-law track, because if zuko’s going to be every immigrant parents’ worst nightmare by majoring in some humanities bullshit, she may as well make her father twice as proud. (lowkey she is kind of ashamed that she’s not pre-med, but she knows she’d make a better lawyer than doctor.) she refuses to admit that the workload is too much for her until people she doesn’t even know start coming up to her to ask her if she’s okay.

in her senior year at harvard, she has a ...bit of a mental breakdown. finals are approaching, and the pressure has finally gotten too much for her, and she just cracks. she takes some really shitty scissors, like, those kids’ scissors with the zagged edges, and gives herself “bangs.” she cries in the shower until the water gets so cold she screams. she eats nothing but cheetos for three whole days and she doesn’t even bother to wash her hands. she drunk dials zuko to be like “oh i am doing so good you don’t even KNOW.” zuko plays the six voicemails she left him at 3am back to sokka, who’s like “i think we have to go to boston???”

because azula is very sensitive right now, zuko pretends that he’s there to ask her for money. he takes her to lunch, which she wears sweatpants to, and sokka just happens to run into them. azula’s like “what the fuck are you doing here???” and he’s like “oh....you know......just visiting my cousin......” to which azula’s like “you have a white cousin?” but then zuko invites him to have lunch with them, and azula brags about how great she’s been doing in college and how she’s top of her class and is gonna go to harvard for law school as well, and sokka’s like “that’s so great! i had no doubt you could do it.” and then she openly sobs in the middle of a restaurant and zuko can feel all the other patrons of this boston establishment glare at them and he’s just like “azula do you mind not being so loud?? we are begging to be hatecrimed” and tries to apologize to everyone on her behalf. after she stops crying, she’s like “well, i must be off to cambridge now! don’t know why we went all the way into boston, since i have a lecture in an hour” and sokka’s like “ok cool bye” but then zuko kicks him and he says, very naturally, “you know, i’ve always wanted to know what the harvard campus is like.” (he doesn’t mention that he saw the harvard campus when he toured MIT.) azula’s just like “of course you would.”

they end up staying with azula until they can persuade her to see a therapist, which takes a really long time because azula believes that therapists are a scam for weak-willed white liberals who love to complain, but sokka manages to organically bring up how he was in therapy intensively for a really long time after yue’s death, and this finally manages to convince her. it takes her a really long time to adjust to therapy because she sees it like a game she refuses to lose, but having completed their mission, sokka and zuko are confident that she’s sprung back enough that at least they don’t have to keep staying in this really creepy motel in boston that zuko is convinced is haunted. she ends up having to repeat the semester, and then takes another semester off, but she goes to harvard law after that.

she makes partner in record speeds. women hate her, and men fear her. her makeup never smudges, her outfits are always impeccable. she never loses a case. then her father dies. she sees zuko at the funeral, and though she stays completely calm throughout the day, she’s a mess on the way home. zuko hates driving, but he drives her home because she had half a bottle of vodka and it’s evident that she is softly crying because her eyeliner teartracks are running over themselves, black smudges spilling down her face. he sleeps on her couch. he’s still there the next morning, and he’s gotten her fresh pastries for breakfast, which she must admit, is a lot tastier than black coffee and a protein bar. he insists that she take another day off work, and she’s like “um they already let me have one day off for the funeral??? i can’t just miss my job willy-nilly, zuzu. it’s my job.” he is so concerned for her. so he reaches out more after that. eventually, she reaches back.

after a lot of coaxing from zuko, sokka unblocks her phone number and texts her, “hey, how’ve you been?” she agonizes over this text for two days, at which point she responds, “Fine.” he writes, “i’m gonna be home for the holidays. if you’re around we should hang out!” and azula, who had no such plans of going anywhere for the holidays, especially not back home, where she has no family left, anyway, is like “Yeah okay.”

seeing sokka for the first time in years, and katara, who she hasn’t seen for even longer, is really jarring for azula. katara’s in a happy relationship. sokka has a fulfilling career. she always told herself she’d get a girlfriend after she got on the supreme court, but that suddenly seems awfully far away as she watches katara’s boyfriend dote on her. aang, this guy who was a few grades below her and insanely popular, throws a new year’s eve party, and invites a whole bunch of people from their highschool because apparently, he was not only friends with everyone, but regularly keeps in touch with all of them. horrid. absolutely horrid. azula goes, out of sheer curiosity. she sees toph, who is having the time of her life at this party that is neither a black tie fundraiser nor a dinner party, and as casually as possible asks her where sokka is, since of course she still remembers that sokka and toph were best friends in high school (though is in fact unaware that they still are). tophs just like “oh, you know how zuko hates parties, so he and sokka just stayed home.” azula gets lightheaded despite having not yet had a drop of alcohol. what exactly did toph say??? toph, yelling this time so that azula may hear her better, yells, “HE AND ZUKO STAYED HOME.” azula’s just like “what the fuck?!??!??!”
