Chapter 1

Rain pours down on Aang, covering him and the bundle in his arms in sheets of water.

The blinding wrath of the Avatar State fades from his spirit. Aang is all that’s left—Aang, the last airbender, clasping the body of the girl he loves.

Katara.

Her name is a whisper upon his lips, the syllables breaking with a grief that splits him down to his very core.

“Katara,” he sobs, aloud this time.

He bends a flame into his open palm, a flickering, fitful light in the midnight rain. Katara’s head rests in the crook of his elbow. The rest of her body lies in his lap, balled up against him.

The fingers of his other hand trace a trembling line down her temple. Dark hair plasters to her skin, covering her face like strands of seagrass. Carefully, as if brushing kelp from the cheekbones of a fragile treasure, he sweeps her hair to the side.

Katara looks like she’s only asleep. But then the raindrops that fall on her face, water streaming over her cheeks and down her chin, should awaken her.

Yet the lines of her eyelashes don’t flutter or blink open. Her eyes remain shut.

Chapter 1

It begins as a prickle in Katara’s chest atop the roof of a submarine.

The wide dome of the sky surrounds her, the shimmering sea cradles her in its palm. Above hangs the mid-morning sun beating down upon the earth, heedless of the darkness about to snuff out its light. Around her float the bodies of submarines partly submerged, like bullfrogs peering out of the water.

In the distance before her lies the wide mouth of the harbor, spanned by the flaming line of the Great Gates of Azulon. Behind her awaits the Fire Nation capital, the seat of the Fire Lord himself and the target of their all-or-nothing strike.

On top of one submarine, she stands with Aang. Sokka and Toph have gone inside to join their allies, so it’s just the two of them now.

They are on the cusp of the invasion—the point around which their destinies will turn.

Suddenly there is too much to say, but not enough words.

The fish reeks before it even reaches the surface of the water—rot and decay and oddly fungal, not what you’d expected to smell out on the middle of the water—odious bubbles popping with a wheeze of horrid gases as the thing comes to float on the waves.

You call it a thing, because its not a fish anymore, not really, not with the green-grey lumpy growths that ooze pus, pus that mixes with the natural mucus-slime atop the thing’s scales, mucus-slime that protects the innumerable eyes that stare up at you.

As you peer at it, shuddering and gasping on the deck of your boat, it blinks.

This sounds like a trap to get you guys to reblog art and fics and gifs which yes that’s an added benefit but also the way you get a feel of followers or mutuals is the little comments in the tags of a post like subtle little whispers and you start to recognise names like oh that’s the one who’s always nice to artists or that’s the funny one or maybe they have a funny queue pun tag or maybe there can be a little prev tags interaction like that’s how you start creating your own little likeminded souls club here. abstract and modern art haters are sooo snobby like klein literally Created an entirely new pigment and then painted a canvas in a way where the brush strokes wouldn't be visible. the insinuation that people with no skill could reproduce that is so annoying because unless you are skilled at color mixing and painting you definitely couldn’t lmao
