Something about Milagro having her dad’s jacket and Jaime having his necklace. Something about their mom handing each of them these pieces of her husband, pressing them into her children’s hands with teary eyes and letting them cling to these pieces of Alberto. Rocio giving these parts of Alberto away to his children who he has watched grow, so that he can stay with them always.

Some thoughts on Blue Beetle (minor spoilers below, major spoilers behind link)
Blue Beetle is one of the best superhero origin films I've seen in a while and one of the things that really elevated it for me was how Jaime's family played an active role in the story especially in the third act. Everyone working together to rescue Jaime and fighting off the bad guys was awesome. Nana was obviously a highlight during that portion of the movie, but I loved the scene where Jaime's mother Rocio told him and Kahji-Da to get their shit together.
I also liked that the movie allowed the family to grieve the loss of Alberto, even letting them channel it into their drive to save Jaime. The scene where Nana takes charge in front of the house and tells them that they need to save Jaime because it's what Alberto would want them to do (which prompts one of my favorite bits of acting in the film where Belissa Escobedo, who playes Jamie's sister Milagro, lets out a sob that felt incredibly genuine) is where the movie went from a standard superhero origin story to something more. And it only got better from there.

Rocio: You should have seen Jaime when he first got out the suit. Reminded me of him running around after his bath as a kid.
Jenny: Aww.
Jaime: MOM?!
Rudy: Ay! In his defence, it was a chilly night.
Milagro: Was it though?
Jaime: Really wishing Victoria had killed me right now.

“This thing is itchy,” Jaime sighed as he shifted in his seat. “Fuck, can’t reach it,” he dropped his arm.
“I got you,” you reassured, arm reaching around his back as you lightly grazed his skin, trying to navigate where he was itchy based on his features.
“No, no, a little to the right,” he winced before he relaxed. “Right there,” he closed his eyes in relief. “Thank you, mi amor,” he squeezed your hand.
You smiled and for the next few minutes, you thought he was good until he started again.
“Jesus,” he stood up, walked to his room and he threw his shirt over his head.
“Still?”
“It’s worse,” he huffed out. “It’s everywhere now,” he glanced in the mirror.
“Just tell me where,” you walked up beside him.
“Along the edges, where it meets,” he said and you complied.
“Thank you,” he exhaled, turning around to kiss your temple.
Your breath hitched when you opened your eyes to be faced with your shirtless boyfriend.
“Hmm,” you made a noise, reaching your hand up to brush his skin. “Been a while since I’ve seen you like this,” you said.
“Oh, yeah,” he smiled, glancing at where you were touching him.
“We’re home alone,” you added.
With Rocio and Nana shopping at the mall, Millie at work, and Rudy getting some parts for his new truck, you and Jaime were finally alone.
“I bought condoms the other day,” he said and you looked up at him.
“Shut the door,” was all you said.
Jaime nodded and he ran toward it before you both ran to each other, your hands quickly finding their way to his hair and his to your waist.
You were obsessed with how he felt.
“I missed you,” Jaime sighed, forehead pressed against yours.
“Me too,” you exhaled, pressing your lips against his.
Everything grew heated, the intense longing you felt for one another finally pouring over as you both undressed each other.
You sucked in a breath when his hand pinched your nipple, his other hand squeezing your ass, kneading the soft flesh. You pressed your body against him and he let go of you, hands touching your hips as he guided you on his bed.
“You are so gorgeous,” he shook his head in disbelief, gaze raking over your body as you rested on your elbows, lip pulling between your teeth, your face heating up under his stare. “I love you so much,” he leaned down and kissed you, his hand slowly sliding up your thigh.
“Jaime,” you called his name softly, resting your head against the pillow, spreading your legs, and welcoming his hand between them. “I love you,” you said before your breath hitched, his fingers gliding along your folds.
You felt your back arch as he circled his thumb around your clit, your lips becoming wetter, and soon you felt his middle finger go inside you.
He moaned at the feeling and you could only picture how good it would feel when he was finally inside you.
“Oh my god, Jaime,” you sighed, hips beginning to move against his palm before he placed another finger inside you, your back arching in the process.
You felt that pressure build and you knew you were close. Embarrisanly way too soon for what it normally took, but hey, it had been too damn long.
“C’mon, mi amor, you got it,” he encouraged, your nails raking down his arm as you gripped onto his wrist. Your hips ground against his fingers, your body withering beneath him as the pleasure became overbearing.
“Jaime,” you moaned, thighs tightening around his hand when his finger stroked over that rough spot as you finally reached your orgasm. “Oh, fuck,” you cried, voice breathless.
You slowly opened your eyes to gaze at him before you glanced down, your hands still wrapped around his wrist. You relaxed, hands drawing up his arm and over his chest. You maneuvered yourself so he settled between your legs.
“So good, baby,” he kissed your cheek before he placed one on your lips.
“Mhmm, Jaime,” you breathed, your touch dragging out over his shoulders and down his back.
He smiled above you, his head dipping down as he pressed his lips along your jaw, trailing down your neck, your collarbone, your chest. He hummed, wrapping his lips around your sensitive peaks, your back arching as he kneaded your flesh. He took his time in exploring your body, savoring each area of skin, each sound escaping your beautiful lips, and each and every feel of you.
“You are so beautiful,” he kissed down your stomach, hands tracing every curve of your body, squeezing his favorite parts right as he arrived at where you wanted him the most. “So delicate,” he shook his head as he situated himself between your thighs, his strong hands pulling them apart further. “All mine,” he breathed before he licked a long stripe along your pussy, your back curving at his touch.
You gasped, hands reaching out to clutch the sheets, your thighs instinctively squeezing around his head and he welcomed in by moving your legs over his shoulders. You let out a trail of moans, your fingers finding their way to his soft brown curls, pushing him further against your core.
His tongue traced a small pattern on your clit, his lips wrapped plumply around the bud as he sucked. He knew you were sensitive, his eyes opening to catch your uncontrolled body as you struggled to feel the pleasure you were longing for. He placed his hands on your hips, holding you down as he continued.
You began to move your hips, but his grip stopped you and you whined at the lack of control. You heard him chuckle against you and that only served as another gasp of pleasure leaving you. You missed having him between your legs and seeing him as he ate you out. Sometimes it felt like he loved it more than you.
“I’m gonna-,” you lifted your head, lightening the pressure on his head as you felt your second orgasm approach. “Fuck, Jaime,” you moaned, falling back on the bed as you came undone.
You caught your breath, eyes dazed as you stared at the ceiling. You felt smooches on your body, moving up before your boyfriend came into view.
“I really missed that,” you said, chest rising and falling rapidly.
“It’s been too long,” he cupped your face, reaching down to kiss you.
You thought about it, aware that it’s been more than a few months. Probably the day he left for his final year at Gotham University.
“It has,” you agreed, getting up and moving him onto his back before you straddled him. His underwear is the only thing blocking you. You shifted, grinding slightly on him and you grinned when you felt him beneath you. “I definitely missed this,” you smirked, dipping your hand in his underwear and wrapping your hand around his length.
“Mi amor,” he closed his eyes and you licked your lips deviously.
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted you inside me again,” you reached over to his nightstand where you knew the condoms were, and pulled one out, not ripping your attention away from him as you lazily pumped him. “All those lonely nights I wished you were fucking me, whispering my name in my ear,” you glanced down at your work, his precum dripping down your hand.
You stared back at Jaime, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he tried to keep focus, beads of sweat forming on his skin and you wondered how his senses had changed ever since Khadji-Da was introduced.
“You say the right things,” he sat up, grabbing your head and pressing his lips against yours, moving you to your back in the process. “Always so perfect for me,” he said against your lips, his hips lining up with yours and soon he sank into you, your walls wrapping around him.
“Oh,” you both sucked in a breath when he stilled inside you.
“Please,” you furrowed your brows. “Can we savor this?” you asked, reaching up to press your forehead against his.
“Mhmm,” he nodded, gulping.
You wrapped your legs around him, hands coming up to touch his biceps and you moved to hide your face in his neck, inhaling his wonderful scent.
After a beat, he began to rock his hips, your tightness sucking him back in with each thrust. You dragged your nails down his muscles, everything sensitive and you felt the way your walls craved the feel of his cock, the sensation traveling all the way back to your bud, causing your eyes to roll in the back of your head.
“I’m not gonna last much longer,” you moaned, clutching onto him.
“Neither am I,” he groaned, lips pressing against your ear.
“Fuck,” you came first with him following right after.
He rolled off you, disposing of the condom before he welcomed you to cuddle against him.
“I think it’s time we start thinking of getting our own apartment,” you said after a beat of silence.
“I agree,” he brushed your arm with his hand, rolling to his side to see your face.
You smiled, puckering your lips and he grinned as he reached down to kiss you. Things were normal again but you both knew one thing, no matter what you’d be where the other goes…

MOAR from the blue beetle fic! We're still building up to stuff! but things are happening!
A day or so later, Jaime’s vision went blurry.
It happened gradually, building over hours until he was rubbing at his eyes more and more and more while accomplishing nothing. Eventually, he gave up and left the auto shop where he’d been helping Rudy go through the paperwork. With the house now theirs and paid off, it was looking promising that they’d be able to keep the shop. It was good news, but still stressful. Jaime figured between that and the poor sleep he’d been getting was reason enough for his tired eyes so he waved off his uncle’s concern and went home.
Once home, Jaime went to his room to take a nap. He landed face down on his bed, fell asleep quickly, and didn’t wake up until his mother shook him awake for dinner. His clothes had gotten twisted around him as he slept and he sat up to straighten them out.
“Mijo, are you okay?” Rocio’s brows furrowed with concern.
“As I can be,” Jaime admitted. “I haven’t been sleeping great.”
“Oh, Jaime…” His mother sat next to him. She tried to put a soothing hand on his shoulder, but he moved away before she could, disguising the motion as a stretch. No one else needed to know how tightly the scarab had anchored itself to his body. “Jaime?”
“It’s sensitive, mamá.” Jaime rose to his feet. His vision was still blurry, though at least it wasn’t any worse. There was a weird congestion in his throat
“Does it look any better? It’s not infected, is it?” Rocio asked as she herded him out of his room and towards the dinner table.
“Of course, of course! Khaji wouldn’t leave it like that. My back’s all healed up, really.”
Rocio sighed. “Just get to dinner, mijo.”
Jaime got to dinner.
The Reyes family was as gregarious as ever during their meal, only stumbling over the empty seat at the table a few times. They grinned and laughed and talked and dealt with their grief and troubles as best they could. By the end of dinner, Jaime’s throat had tightened. He couldn’t swallow, couldn’t cough, could barely speak loudly enough to excuse himself from the dinner table in spite of his mother's concern.
Back in his room, exhaustion settled over Jaime like a wet blanket: smothering and cold. He burrowed into his bed. There was a pair of weird twinges in his arms, twanging from shoulders to elbows to wrists. He couldn’t get comfortable.
"Khaji," Jaime rasped, nearly silent. The scarab, of course, understood him. Not because it could read his mind, but because it read the movements of his body and signals traveling on his nerves. "What’s happening?"
Secondary optimization of host body.
"Sure, but what does that even mean, Khaji?" Jaime was cold and tired and miserable, he didn't feel very optimized.
The initial synchronization brings the host to a minimum standard of ability. I am improving upon that.
Jaime groaned. "It's not gonna be like that always, Khaji. My life isn't that exciting." The scarab was traumatized by their first days together. Fair enough, Jaime kind of was too.
I would rather be prepared.
It was comforting, Jaime decided after a moment. Khaji wanted them capable, wanted them safe. After Victoria Kord, he couldn’t help agreeing with it. “How long’s it gonna take?”
Current modifications will be completed in approximately thirty-six hours.
That wasn’t too bad. It’d be just like a flu or something. Jaime flipped his blankets completely over his head and curled into a ball. His back, and Khaji’s sensory nodes, faced out towards the open air of his room. Eventually, Jaime drifted towards something like sleep.

Blue Beetle is a triumph for DC, the Latinx Community, and Superhero Movies - SPOILER FREE REVIEW
Tumblr media
Ángel Manuel Sotos new DC film Blue Beetle is hitting theaters this week but has had a significantly hard road to get here.
The film was originally sold as a direct to streaming film, then was moved to theatrical release, was caught in the middle of a James Gunn take over, and now a writer's/actor's strike. Couple all that with superhero fatigue, and DC's not so clean track record, the film would have to jump massive hurdles to be successful most movies do not.
Blue Beetle, however, is a magnificent departure from superhero films of late that coast on past projects, name dropping, or cameos. It is a delightful film that centers on family, responsibility, and the many different types of Latinx experiences, all while being extremely funny and full of incredible action.
Director Manuel Soto breathes new life into the DCU in a way few directors have before. instead of opting for uniformity with other superhero projects, the film has a distinct color and design that feels unique and fresh. Excellent design, costuming, and vibrancy make up a beautiful Palmera City.
Tumblr media
One of the most notable aspects of the film was the fluid, dynamic fight choreography for Blue Beetle and our main physical antagonist, Carapax. While there are several heroes who have similar powers to Jaime, none quite have used it as interestingly. The shifting of weaponry, flight, and hand to hand combat make for types of fights we don't really see in live action.
Tumblr media
This film of course is not just made up of excellent visuals, but a phenomenal supporting cast. It is hard to pick out favorites, as most characters are given an opportunity to shine.
Through this cast, Manuel Soto shows the many realistic day to day fears and feelings of a Latinx/Hispanic person. Responsibility, family, and becoming who you are supposed to be are all at the heart of the film. As a Latinx man, so many aspects of the film hit home for me, sometimes comedically, sometimes tragically.
The movie also emphasizes different kinds of experiences in our community. Undocumented citizens, first generation, the religious traditional older member of the family, even the slacker uncle. Every member of the family feels different, but they all feel like a family.
For me, I'd say Belissa Escobedo as Milagro Reyes brings excellent sisterly back and forth with our hero and has some very emotional moments in the film. Brother/sister chemistry is sometimes difficult to pull off, but Escobedo makes it look easy. I think she has the making of a comedic star on the rise and is someone to lookout for.
Tumblr media
I'd say most members of the family will be someones favorite. George Lopez as Rudy, Jaimes Uncle Rudy, Damián Alcázar as Alberto Reyes, Jaimes Father, and Adriana Barraza as Nana, the matriarchal head of the family all got big laughs and, at times, tears from their performances.
This cast is phenomenal and elevates excellent writing into several iconic scenes. I don't see this film working without the perfect familial blend of actors. And they got it perfectly.
Tumblr media
While characters like Elpidia Carrillo as Rocio Reyes or Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord do get the short end of the stick in the film, I think they get their moments and will be greater utilized in (hopefully) future installments of the franchise.
What made it most clear that Manuel Soto understands character were the two antagonists of the film.
While they are not nearly as significant as the rest of the family, both Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord and Raoul Max Trujillo as Conrad Carapax are not reduced to twirling mustache villains. They both have realistic and at times tragic stories that explain (but does not justify) their actions.
Tumblr media
While both give solid performances and are a step above your average Marvel/DC villains, I think the film could've benefitted from more of them.
But the real highlight of the film, to no ones surprise, was Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes.
Tumblr media
Maridueña as Blue Beetle feels like one of those castings that seem impossible to be topped. He brings excellent comedy, pain, and honor to Jaime in a way that feels natural. He is Blue Beetle.
In the film, Maridueña displays a wide range of emotions while he goes through an incredibly grueling 2-3 days. There is comedy, awkwardness, strength, anger, and pain, and Maridueña nails every moment of it.
I expect you will see a lot more Xolo in the future even if we don't see more Blue Beetle. But I hope he does return.
I think this movie has the potential to connect with audiences in a way we just haven't seen in a long time from a Superhero film. It is original, fun, and shows us a side of DCU we've never seen before, without endless cameos and reminders of past projects.
I hope other studios take away that audiences want more representation via original content from creative visionaries. But Hollywood often takes away the wrong lesson.
Tumblr media
All in all, Blue Beetle is an incredible film that balances comedy, drama, and action in a way superhero movies rarely do. If you get the chance to, I highly recommend you go out and give it a watch. Films as good as this deserve support.
Blue Beetle is out in theaters this Friday August 18th.

Blue beetle spoilers. And spoilers for Macario (1960)
There’s plenty of articles out there already with this info but these are my thoughts.
Ok I just saw Blue Beetle and I’m in love with Xolo Maridueña!!! His character Jaime Reyes is so enthusiastic and loves his family and ultimately kind. And he has sweet eyes XD. It’s really cool he got the role because of his martial arts skills.
Harvey Guillén is in there! He plays another character with the same last name, de la Cruz, so maybe we can jokingly have crossovers in this universe with What we do in the Shadows. Blade (admittedly Marvel but still) is semi-canon already. (I didn’t catch the entirety of his real name sorry, just definitely the end.)(idk if Guillermo de la Cruz is his full name or if his name was shuffled around/inaccurately represented due to USian naming customs)
I loved George Lopez as Uncle Rudy. He rocks the kookiness!
Nana was hella cool. Between her implied revolutionary backstory (she hates Imperialists! The way she pulls out her braids when it’s time to attack makes me think that she was part of a pro-Mexico or maybe pro-Indigenous force back in the day) and Ignacio’s backstory (his mother, his only family, murdered in a ‘anti-communist’ attack in Guatemala, and then he was sent to ‘Escuela de las Americas’, a USA funded ‘school’ that basically churned out child soldiers and later adult destabilizers sent out to disrupt Latin America in the name of USian interests (its still in operation), and then he was experimented upon by the very people that ruined his life (a la the Tuskegee Airmen Experiment) really speaks to the racism and imperialism that affects the family in the movie and many people face today (preaching to the choir I know). The fight ain’t over.
(First link is in spanish, second link is the English Wikipedia page)
I appreciate that a good half of Jaime’s family were not in the US legally. The constant terror and unwillingness to seek help for fear of attention was quite palpable, and I think really adds to the idea that superheroes are supposed to make sure ALL people live safely and happily - legality should not contradict human rights. And hell, even though they were in the USA, their home was still threatened - by gentrification!
The poor Dad’s death is sadly not an uncommon phenomenon. Many immigrants, but especially undocumented ones, work themselves to the bone, both physically and emotionally. Poverty and instability kill more than any capitalist would ever like to acknowledge. And yet Alberto still found it in his heart to be kind whenever possible. I really respect that. And I think his kindness inspired Rocio (the mom, who is totally cool) and Milagro (sister) to keep on after his death.
The body horror aspects were interesting, for both Jaime and Ignacio Caripax. I hope they lean into that in later works.
But what really caught my eye was the cave of candles that appeared twice in the story. There’s a European story, Godfather Death, about a godchild of the personification of death who gets given the power to heal, and ultimately (in some people’s views) wastes it in greed and/or love. He gets to watch his life, represented as a candle, blow out. However, in Spanish, death is a feminine concept, and so Death is a godmother in that situation. Godmother Death* is thus a common story in Latin America too, but especially in Mexico and Guatemala, where Maya beliefs mixed with Catholic ones.
It turns out, the creators wanted to bring in some Latine magical realism and reference the classic Mexican film, **Macario, which is based on a novel based on a local legend that was likely based on La Madrina Muerte. I’ve ordered the book, lol, and will watch the movie soon. I’m quite excited to see it.
I found it quite interesting that Jaime’s acceptance of Khaji Da and the Macario/Madrina Muerte scene happened really close to each other. In a way, he chose compromise to continue with life, as opposed to Macario’s/the Godson’s stubbornness which lead to their deaths. His willingness to work with Khaji Da (scarabs are symbols of rebirth btw) shows a willingness to work with his place in the life and death cycle, and the Madrina Muerte themes showcase his interest in alleviating suffering***.
In any case, if you have money for a ticket, I highly suggest going to see Blue Beetle! It’s totally worth it.
*La Madrina Muerte, in Spanish. I’ve been somewhat obsessed with it since I was a preteen, as I came across the Spanish version translated to English first. My tumblr name is *somewhat* related lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was somewhat inspired by La Calavera Catrina art, Santa Muerte and the Grim Reaper when I drew this.
**for some reason tumblr has decided that two links is quite enough for this post. Sometimes it just doesn’t let me add more links? Or copy/paste!!? Anyway if you’d like to read a more knowledgeable article about the relationship between the two films, look up ‘macario blue beetle’ & then an article by slashfilm will appear.
***In the legend, the godson is given a plant, a potion, or just the power to heal. But he must abide by Death’s position by the bed of the afflicted person. If death is at the foot of the bed, then they were meant to live, and he gets to take away their suffering and cure them entirely. But if Death stood by the head of the bed, then the person was meant to die soon, and so the Godson had to leave them be. In either case, Death prefers to end suffering - through complete healing or a cessation of life. However, Jaime makes sure (when he can) to help people live and be able to choose what to do with their life (like in the case of Ignacio). And Khaji Da respects that.

One Day
Summary: Jaime had not considered that there would be some injuries Khaji could not heal, not until he’s standing before the bathroom mirror and staring, horrified, at the scars tracing along his body. Written for the prompt: What if Jaime developed lichtenburg figures from the machine that just won't go away for some reason?
The first time Jaime sees the scars, he is in the master bathroom of Jenny’s abandoned mansion.
He wakes up on the dusty mattress of her parents bed, hair pressed flat on one side of his head and drool drying on his cheek. Disoriented by the moth eaten sheets beneath him, it takes him a moment to sit up from where he’s been lying on his stomach, pushing himself up with shaking arms. His whole body aches, down to his teeth when he grits them and groans.
The pulsing agony that courses its way through him is not unlike what he imagines it would feel like to be hit by a bus. In fact, he thinks, a bus might actually be kinder. He takes assessment of himself in increment pieces. There is dried blood streaked across his abdomen, it is the easiest thing to spot when he shifts to sitting with his back against the headboard and presses inquisitively at the warm skin with probing fingers. There is no surface wound, but Jaime can distantly remember the sharp pain of something tearing through him with the ease of a knife through butter. There is far less blood on him than he would have thought, given the way it had felt pooling tacky between his skin and the suit, which Jaime thinks must mean someone had wiped most of it away. He tries to remember who it might have been, but his last coherent thought is of watching Ignacio walk into a burning inferno, dragging Victoria Kord behind him as if she were loose cargo.
His thighs and legs burn with a tender soreness that throbs when he moves, but otherwise they seem fine. His arms ache, and there’s dirt crusted under his fingernails, but they otherwise are clean. Jaime has been dressed in satin blue trackpants with faded gold stars marching in an even line down the sides. He recognizes the clothing from Ted Kord’s abandoned closet. They were the pair he had intentionally ignored when Jenny told him to take whatever he wanted, which means he did not dress himself. He does not know how long he has lain in this bed, inhaling the moldy stench of decay that’s settled over everything in the mansion, but it’s been long enough that Khaji Da has managed to heal most of his wounds on the surface level.
“Khaji?” He asks into the empty space, eyes searching the room even as he knows he won’t see them and feeling at his back for where tender flesh meets the hard surface of the scarab.
“I am here, Jaime.” They reply, immediately, as if they were only waiting for Jaime to remember the feeling of their presence at the back of his mind. And he does feel it, more than he has since they first burrowed inside him and built a home out of his body. If he focuses on them hard enough he can almost hear their thoughts, feel the bone deep exhaustion that mirrors his own.
“Are we okay?”

Tamagotchi Mentioned in Blue Beetle Movie
Tumblr media
Blue Beetle is an American superhero film baed on the DC Comics Jamie Reyes/Blue Beetle.
Jaime Reyes suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he's bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that's capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.
It has just recently been released in theaters on August 18th, 2023! We’ve heard from Bandai Namco US that Tamagotchi is mentioned in the film, how awesome is that? Although we have not yet seen the movie, we did find the quote where Tamagotchi is mentioned, and you know when we see the movie we’ll watch this clip over and over again!
Tumblr media
‘"Is that the new Tamagotchi?" asks Rocio Reyes (Elpidia Carrillo) when her son Jaime (Xolo Maridueña) brings home a burger box containing a glowing metallic insect with fries. Er, no. What Gotham University graduate turned pool cleaner Jaime has actually stumbled upon is an ancient piece of alien biotech that wastes no time transforming him into a flying bug symbiote with scorpion-like antennae protruding from his back. "You’re a superhero, cabrón!" says his uncle Rudy (George Lopez) gleefully. In a world where Supes and Batman have things pretty much in check, though, is there any need for another?”

The Mosley Review: Blue Beetle
Tumblr media
I believe we're all familiar with the term "suspension of disbelief" correct? I mean, you can say that about the majority of films in the superhero genre, but man does this film truly take that term to a level that I haven't seen in a while. For the longest time we have been treated to more grounded superhero films that had fantastical elements, but felt tangible and above all, possible. When dealing with alien tech in these films, yeah its supposed to be over the top, but somewhere along the way the tone needs to center itself for us to stay engaged throughout the film while being pelted by nonstop CGI madness. As a massive DC fan, the character of Blue Beetle has always been flashy and they nailed that aspect with the beautiful color scheme and visuals. This film truly leaned into the neo 80's sci fi style complete with plenty of neon blue and purple. The core of the film is about the power of family, but it lacks balance in trying to represent the Latino culture while trying to deliver a decent origin story that isn't filled to the brim with boring stereotypical character archetypes. You can throw as much kinetic energy on screen with cool visuals, but it means nothing if the story has nothing to say.
Tumblr media
Xolo Maridueña was charming and fun to watch as Jamie Reyes. I loved that he was always connected to his family and how he was a brilliant kid. I engaged with his growth as the film progressed, but I wish he had toned down the characters reactions to the Scarab. He spends most of the film screaming and freaking out and I wish there was more moments of him actually stopping and trying to figure out the new tech and his abilities. By the time he finally becomes a sort of hero, I liked his dedication, but he could've been directed better in how he got there. Belissa Escobedo was good as his annoying and angsty sister Milagro Reyes. There were moments where I wish she would pull back the constant negative and snarky comments as they completely stop the momentum of a scene. Damián Alcázar was awesome and heartfelt as Jamie's father Alberto Reyes. He was the core of the family and I enjoyed his scenes the most as he imparted the wisdom and calm the story needed. Elpidia Carrillo was good as Jamie's mother Rocio Reyes and the strength she portrays later in the film was astounding. Adriana Barraza was amazing and stole the film as Jamie's grandmother, Nana. I loved that there was more to her than the strong and lovable character in the background. George Lopez was fun and sometimes hilarious as Jamie's uncle, Rudy Reyes. He brings back that infectious energy that we all love him for and his expert comedic timing is on display. Even though he was paranoid most of the time, he was right and a brilliant engineer. Bruna Marquezine was really good as Jenny Kord and I liked that she had a strong moral compass in the film. Her chemistry with Jamie was forced at times, but levels out once everything slows down. Raoul Max Trujillo was good as the stoic fighter and bodyguard Ignacio Carapax. He pretty much was the person for Jamie to fight in the film, but there was more to his story and it made him more than a cardboard cut out villain. Susan Sarandon was decent as Jenny's aunt, Victoria Kord. She was your typical crooked and manipulative business woman that had the cliche rule the world with a new weapon program idea. Honestly, you were just waiting for her to be dealt with in some form and you can tell Susan was just there to have fun.

The score by Bobby Kalic was fun and filled with the classic 80's techno infused sound. It really hits hard when we get into the history of the original Blue Beetle and when we get to see his lair. The visual design of the film was vibrant as I mentioned before with the neon accents. I really liked that the suit was practical and the action was fun to watch when the camera was pulled back and still. The film was a decent introduction of the character and the emotional family story was the core of the film, but the film truly does lack focus. There are so many ideas thrown around and the plot of the film was so bland that after while it felt like a chore to get to the end. Although we're dealing with alien tech, I wish this film was way more grounded, slowed down and less crowded. In the grand scheme of superhero films, this was a more middle of the road adventure. Its a good watch, but nothing that elevates the genre in meaningful or extremely impactful way. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in comments below. Thanks for reading!

Night Shift
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jaime Reyes x F!Reader
Summary: Jaime doesn't like that you work a night shift at a bar, so setting out to get a job at Kord Industries, you're shocked when he comes home with something else....
Warnings: mentions of men being pervs, lots of screaming and a little bit of violence, SPOILERS FOR BLUE BEETLE!
Word Count: 2.4k
A/N: My first full fic in a while? Yes, it is indeed and with my new love, Jaime Reyes. If you haven't seen Blue Beetle, pause and go buy a ticket cause this movie is good! So proud of mi Xolito! Anyway, I'm proud of this, so enjoy! 💕💕💕
I don't consent to my work being copied, reposted, or translated.
“You don’t have to do this, y’know? I’ll get the job tomorrow and work hard to support the family and us,” Jaime stood up from your bed, grabbing hold of your hands to stop you from getting ready for work.
“Jaime, I know you want to do everything you can to stop us from losing the house, but we need the money, wherever we can get it from,” you inhaled.
You moved in with the Reyes three years ago after your parents kicked you out. The details are unimportant and messy but you were happy you ended up in a loving household after all. The only problem now, you’re on the brink of becoming homeless.
“But a job where drunk assholes violate you?” he scoffed and you rolled your eyes, knowing most customers haven’t gotten handsy since you started. “It’s not right,” he shook his head, squeezing your hands. “I don’t want you to have to go through that,” he rested his forehead against yours.
You knew he meant well. It sucked having to work at a bar where wearing low-cut tops and push-up bras made for extra tips. Especially when you worked during the night. But then again, even when businesses are going bankrupt, bars are seemingly filling in at an all-time high. You had to take advantage of the dire situation even if Jaime didn’t like it.
“I can handle my own,” you smirked. “Nana taught me a thing or two,” you winked.
“I bet she did,” he chuckled.
“And besides,” you removed your hands from his grip, smoothing them up his arms until they rested on his biceps. “I have my big strong boyfriend to protect me,” you looked at him finding the blush forming on his face adorable.
He wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you in as he leaned forward to kiss you. His lips moved against yours slowly, one of your hands moving up to tug on the hair of the nape of his neck.
Living in a small house with five other people gave you no privacy whatsoever, so moments like these were cherished. All those stolen glances, hidden kisses, late-night talks—it all meant something.
“I gotta go, okay? I’ll see you in the morning,” you pulled away.
“You’re crazy if you think I’m letting you walk to work alone at eleven at night,” he grabbed your arm lightly, pulling you back into his embrace. “I’ll be there to pick you up at seven too,” he said and you sighed out contently.
“It means a lot, but don’t you have your job interview tomorrow?” you rested your head against his chest as you both walked out of your and Milagro’s room.
“I’ll sleep, wake up, pick you up, then come back and get ready,” he shrugged and you agreed with his well-thought-out plan.
“Ya te vas, mija?” Rocio asked once you both entered the kitchen and you nodded. “Cuidate, y come tu comida, no quiero que te desmayes,” she handed you a paper sack and you smiled, thanking her.
It was things like that which made you grateful for Jaime’s family—your family. The constant protection and worry they hold over you like one would for a daughter or sister. Making sure you had a lunch packed so you can eat and not faint during your shift. It warmed your heart and made you grateful every day.
“Make sure she gets there safe, okay, Jaime?” Alberto pointed to his son and your boyfriend nodded, reassuring the two.
Walking out of the house, you found your hands intertwined as you made your way down the block. You glanced at Jaime to find him smiling at you before he looked ahead. You grinned at the fact you caught him before you too continued your focus forward.
Palerma City was alive at night, even in the small barrio you lived in. The streets were dark, flickering lamp posts illuminating the people who were still up trying to make a living by whatever means. You looked far past, the bright neon skyline of the city, all the rows of high rises where all the rich white folk were fast asleep tucked away in silk sheets.
You would get there one day.
“What did my mom pack for your lunch?” he asked, pulling you out of your thought.
“A torta de jamon, an apple and orange, some Fritos, and oh, a gansito,” you gasped in excitement before you stuffed the bag in your backpack. “I know exactly what I’m eating first,” you giggled.
“My mom literally said we ran out of gansitos,” he said in shock. “She loves you more than me,” he feigned hurt and you wrapped your arm around him, cooing as you kissed his cheek.
“What can I say? I’m lovable,” you hummed.
The two of you turned the corner and you found yourself at “Margaritaville”, the newest establishment where you got paid minimum wage and received great tips from businessmen who got off on a pretty bartender flirting with them before they made their way home to their wives. Or from people who recently got laid off from their jobs and needed someone to talk to.
Either way, you’d put on your best smile, bat your lashes and make sure your top was low enough if that meant being able to pay part of the rent.
“Be safe, okay?” Jaime pulled you in for a hug. “I’ll be awake at 6:30,” he promised.
“I will,” you mumbled into his neck before pulling away. “See you soon,” you smiled, pressing a soft kiss to his lips.
He cupped your cheek before you pulled away, your fingers pulling along his, straining to stay in touch as you kept moving toward the door until they unlinked, his arm stayed hovered in the air for a split moment while yours dropped to the side. He watched as you turned back and waved until you entered through the back door, making sure to stay for a minute before he turned back around.
The lingering touch of you remained on his fingers until he arrived home and made his way to bed. It wasn’t fair you had to become a main stream of income for the house. It shouldn’t be you pulling in the long hours, it should be him.
He needed to get that interview at Kord Industries tomorrow.
~
You undid your apron, shoving it back into your backpack. You let out a sigh as you did a once over to the barely empty bar. The next shift already arrived and was taking care of the customers. Letting out a yawn, you placed your tips in your pocket, opening the back door only to be greeted by Jaime who was waiting at the curb.
“Buenos dias, mi amor,” he smiled and you felt your cheeks blush at the pet name he liked to change out every once in a while. “Made you breakfast,” he handed you something rolled in some paper towels before you unveiled two bean burritos. “How was work?” he kissed your cheek while he took your bag from you.
“Made $150 in tips,” you stated, biting into your food. “Getting paid tomorrow, so it went well,” you nodded. “Customers were more to themselves tonight, except for this one guy who was crying about his wife leaving him. I think he left looking for a prostitute to be honest,” you chuckled.
“Poor dude,” he hummed. “But the money is good,” he said, wrapping his arm around you.
The rest of the short walk was made in silence and it was calming to just have Jaime by your side. The eight-hour shift takes it out on you and you couldn’t wait to go to sleep.
“Hola,” you greeted as you walked through the door.
“Como te fue?” Nana asked and you responded to her before a yawn came out.
“Disculpe,” you pressed a hand to your chest. “I’m gonna go shower,” you said, the family understanding as you made your way to your room.
After a quick shower and changing into casual wear, you felt refreshed as you walked back into the family room. The whole family was gathered as Jaime stood in the middle, hair geled back and his fancy clothes put on.
“Wow, que chulo,” you complimented with a bright smile plastered on your face as you stood behind the couch.
“You see, cabezon? You look fine,” Uncle Rudy told his nephew and Jaime nodded in defeat, clearly flustered. “Y/N wouldn’t lie, she loves you too much for that!” he cackled and you joined in, making Jaime blush even more.
“Let’s go and get this over with, I still don’t trust that Jenny girl,” Milagro muttered under her breath and you sent a glance at Jaime.
You were aware of what happened when Milagro and Jaime lost their job with Victoria Kord. Millie was correct to have a distaste for the older lady, but after her niece offered an olive branch, giving Jaime an opportunity–you weren’t sure if she was in the right to have that distrust. But then again, you weren’t there.
“Descansas, okay?” Nana kissed you on the cheek and gave you the blessing before she walked out and you nodded.
The rest of the family walked out, leaving you and Jaime left.
“Good luck, okay?” you grabbed his face and gave him a chaste good luck kiss. “I know you’re gonna woo them over,” you sent him a sure smile.
“How are you so sure about that?” he held your wrists, running his thumbs over your delicate skin.
“Cause, you’re Jaime Reyes”.
~
“You don’t know what’s inside?” you heard Millie ask.
You were awakened by muffled conversations, your brows furrowing as you checked the time. They couldn’t have come back that soon and if something serious happened, they would’ve woken you up.
About to drift back to sleep, you eyes shot open by shouting. The voices of Jaime, Millie, and Rudy combine together. Bolting out of bed fast, you opened the door and ran into the dining room, finding Millie and Rudy to be playing hot potato with a blue bug, Jaime trying to get them to stop.
“Mira, look what you did! You woke her up,” Rocio gestured to you and the room suddenly got quiet.
“Ay, Y/N, I’m sorry,” Jaime winced, trying to grab the thing from Millie but she held it out of his reach.
“Look what Jaime brought back. That Jenny girl is a total floozy, like what is this that she gave him?” she cocked a brow, holding it clearly so you could see.
“A bug?” you rubbed your eyes. “Why would she give you a bug?” you asked, walking closer.
“She told me to guard it with my life, I wasn’t even supposed to open it,” your boyfriend explained and his words made you uneasy.
“I think you should put it back, you don’t know what it can be,” you turned to Millie.
“She’s right,” Jaime held out his hand and Milagro reluctantly agreed, placing it in his palm.
You watched as he was about to place it back in the box until it lit up, his face inching closer to inspect it. You stared back in amazement, the bug coming to life.
“I think it likes me,” he grinned, glancing up at you with a twinkle in your eyes that made your heart skip a beat. But that smile was instantly wiped away the moment the bug launched itself onto his face.
“JAIME!” you screeched, the family shooting up from their seats as they tried to aid him.
“It’s on your face!” Uncle Rudy screamed before he grabbed onto the bug, attempting to rip it off but it shot out a bolt of electricity, sending him across the room and Jaime against the wall.
Your body began to shake and you wanted to run over to help Jaime but he got up, the bug detaching from his face until it crawled over his shoulder and under his shirt like a spider you wanted off immediately.
“Jaime!” you shouted, his body thrashing around the room like he was fighting with the bug. “Baby, please,” you cried, hands over your mouth as you tried to begin to process what was going on but you couldn’t.
“Oh god,” Jaime stilled, hunched over as he looked at you. “I think it’s inside of me,” his gaze filled with panic and you felt your skin crawl. “It’s inside of me!” he screamed, hand reaching out for yours before he doubled over in pain, the bug poking out underneath his clothes before arms pierced through, sending him up against the ceiling.
Another wave of screams sounded, the love of your life’s agony cries being the worst thing you ever heard. The tears were falling down your cheeks. You wanted to help him but couldn’t. You wanted to know what was going on but didn’t. You were completely helpless in this situation.
Black goo grew over his body, his clothes burning to crisps and you were afraid of what it was going to do once it got all of him. Were you about to lose your Jaime? How did you get to this point when it was just a job interview?
“Y/N!” his call for you made your heart stop and you tried telling him you were here but his cries drowned it out.
Suddenly, he was completely transformed, a suit of armor in black and blue engulfed him. The cries and the screams quieted down as you all stared at him. A split second ago, you thought he was going to die, but now he was fine? It didn’t make sense.
“Mijo?” Rocio called out as Jaime walked over to the photo of La Virgen, his illuminating yellow eyes staring back into the reflection.
“What was that?” he looked back in shock, hands over his mouth. “Did you hear that?” his voice was panicked, his expression hidden with the eyes providing just the tiniest amount of concern.
“Jaime, what’s going on?” you took a step forward.
“That voice, you don’t hear a voice?” he walked forward, standing in the middle of the room, surrounded by all of you. The suit seemed to have turned on, blue light glowing between grooves and you all watched in awe. “Systems check?” he mumbled, looking around the room.
“Jaime?” you asked, noticing the arms powering up.
“It’s okay, everything is going to be okay!” he shouted just as he was flown through the ceiling before he became a dot in the sky.
Nothing was okay.
