I’M NOT DEAD!!! I’ve been ultra busy with life, but I finally got to draw something after seeing Blue Beetle! It was super cool and I had a fun time watching it :D

I love how Jaime was on a “no killing rule” but the rest of his family just didn’t even care and impaled and gunned people down

Some thoughts on Blue Beetle (minor spoilers below, major spoilers behind link)
Blue Beetle is one of the best superhero origin films I've seen in a while and one of the things that really elevated it for me was how Jaime's family played an active role in the story especially in the third act. Everyone working together to rescue Jaime and fighting off the bad guys was awesome. Nana was obviously a highlight during that portion of the movie, but I loved the scene where Jaime's mother Rocio told him and Kahji-Da to get their shit together.
I also liked that the movie allowed the family to grieve the loss of Alberto, even letting them channel it into their drive to save Jaime. The scene where Nana takes charge in front of the house and tells them that they need to save Jaime because it's what Alberto would want them to do (which prompts one of my favorite bits of acting in the film where Belissa Escobedo, who playes Jamie's sister Milagro, lets out a sob that felt incredibly genuine) is where the movie went from a standard superhero origin story to something more. And it only got better from there.

Saw an early screening of DC’s Blue Beetle. Got to say, I enjoyed it and DC films don’t really have a good track record of being enjoyable.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW BELOW… kind of.

It genuinely made me laugh hard and loud. It had no business being that funny. I like Xolo Maridueña and I can’t picture anyone else as Jaime Reyes after he was casted. He has actual good comedic timing evident as Miguel Diaz in Netflix’s Cobra Kai. George Lopez as Uncle Rudy is obviously hilarious in this. Damian Alcazar as Alberto Reyes is to die for. Adriana Barraza as Nana was dope. The family chemistry is great. Be aware, shit gets dark. The movie gets surprisingly mature at times.
There’s themes of injustice, classism, and capitalism or anti-capitalism in the film. All of that just flew over a bunch of kids heads who saw the film but those who caught it know. It kind of reminds me of Robocop but toned down to pg13.
My biggest complaint about the movie was that the third act felt sloppy. The movie itself also felt like it was a tv series converted into a movie. I like Susan Sarandon but the villains in this movie felt like the villain in MCU’s Thor 2: forgettable. There’s an overuse of CGI but on the practical action shots, Xolo Maridueña delivers. Good movie. Could be better if it only had better antagonists. Understandably see it’s a setup for a trilogy. Would definitely rewatch. Way better than Shazam 2, Black Adam, and The Flash.

Aight I know I know I KNOW the point of Khaji Da’s story was to learn that killing wasn’t always the answer and that you can actively choose to spare lives and practice empathy and all that shit BUT
She really got passed around the whole family and instead of choosing idk the unhinged tech genius or the seasoned revolutionary killer she said, “yep, gimme the pacifist. I can fix him”
