The recent wave of movies/shows that go on a "tell don't show" route because people behind them think consumers are too stupid to understand a thing on their own makes me appreciate arcane more than I did before

Weird how the non canon ships in Rick Riordan's books tend to have a better and more interesting history together, better chemistry, healthier dynamics, and feel more natural than the canon couples; plus a lot of wasted potential. Examples are Reyna x Jason, Nico x Percy, Rachel x Percy, Leo x Piper, Jason x Nico or Jason x Leo.
It's like the more Rick wants you to ship something, the more it feels forced and has red flags that are kinda hard to ignore. The only exception being Hazel and Frank

One of things that really turned me off of the pjo world among lots of other things was that all the titans and primordials were portrayed as purely evil with no nuance or variety in morality. In the books, even Iapetus, who is labelled a "good" titan, was pretty much brainwashed into being benevolent.
Nyx was such a loving and devoted mother in mythology that she scared off Zeus when he tried to harm her son Hypnos. Prometheus went through excruciating pain on a daily basis just for humanity to have light and heat. Leto was described as kind and gentle and was the titan goddess of motherhood. Phoebe gave Apollo, her grandson, the oracle of Delphi as a gift. Oceanus, in some myths, helped Zeus overthrow Kronos by giving him a potion that would induce vomiting and release his siblings and he and Tethys pretty much raised Hera during the titanomachy. Helios was a loving father to Circe and all his kids and even saved her when a giant attacked her island. Etc, etc.

I feel like we're supposed to love the pjo show and not criticize because rick is involved and he made the changes to his own story and he must know what he is doing and all that. I love that the trio is played by actual children. I love Percy's sass, Grover's empathy, and Annabeth's intelligence. They each have lines in the show that felt so true to the characters. But so many scenes also feel anti-climatic. Where's the danger? Why do these 12 year olds on their VERY FIRST quest know what everything is as soon as they encounter it? Why can't they make mistakes? Why can't they get in trouble? Why do they know everything!????? If every monster can easily be defeated by 12 year olds on their first ever quest, they don't seem that threatening. Everyone talks at them. I don't want Percy to just tell us that he knows Crusty murders travelers and the beds are a trap. Show us that Crusty is dangerous. Trap Annabeth and Grover. Then show us how clever Percy is coming up with a plan on the spot while his friends are in danger. These kids outsmart everyone and everything too easily.

I’m sorry but being a Dionysus devotee makes me side-eye both Percy Jackson and Lore Olympus.
“Dionysus made Zeus mad by pursuing a nymph he was into so he banished Dionysus to earth and made him work at the camp!” Zeus would fucking never do that to Dionysus and even if he did, who’s to say that the god of ritualistic madness and wine would go in the first place? The guy who inspired insane cults, was one of the original Mycenaean deities and is sometimes equated with fucking Osiris and Lord Shiva?? Get out of here.
“Zeus was okay to gave baby Dionysus up to be cared for by Persephone and Hades instead of the nymphs at Mount Nyssa! Persephone and Hades would do a great job as parents!” Again, Zeus would never fucking do that to Dionysus. With a select few, in all the main versions of Mythos, Zeus has a great relationship with his kids and Dionysus is no exception. He’d never just hand him over with issue to anyone he didn’t trust. He’d also know a baby god so heavily linked to nature wouldn’t thrive in the underworld. Also, the Lore Olympus versions of Persephone and Hades fucking suck and, surprise surprise, are terrible parents.
Hades game, my beloved, I still the only piece of media to really GET Lord Dionysus.

Was the Poseidon PR in the books not enough? Did we need to double down on the Poseidon positivity?

I can’t believe I’m having to go to bat for Gabe Ugliano and talk about HIS character assassination but holy shit…
Gabe’s character and his relationship with Sally and Percy is in my opinion a very good, real, and raw example of what an abuser looks like and Rick somehow managed to do it IN A CHILDREN’S BOOK…
I appreciated that a lot about his writing, he didn’t shy away from what Gabe was, a horrible, abusive, cruel person. And because of that, his story ending with Sally turning him to stone with Medusa’s head goes to end a great story of revenge and freedom.
The show turns Gabe into this pathetic excuse of a man, one who only backs down from conflict when confronted… Percy comes home and he is upset for a minute but backs down when he learns Percy may have fought a girl. Gabe gets sort of upset at Sally but back downs when she essentially yells back at him. Sure he’s an asshole but that’s really as far as it goes. He’s not a quarter of the way as cruel and evil as he is in the books. For them to do that and then completely throw out the fact in the book he is ABUSING Sally, but then still feel they deserve to do the Medusa Head reveal is a slap in the face to readers and fans alike.
I reiterate… to turn this amazingly done story of abuse, revenge, and liberation into a post credit scene punchline shows this show has no respect for it’s fans, book or show alike. They don’t think these stories are worth telling or think their audience is too stupid to understand them… either way it’s the complete opposite of how Rick wrote the book… so what changed?
This show for whatever reason has decided to put conflict in places in which there needs to be none and completely remove the conflicts which made his book good in the first place!

Percy Jackson Tv Show: Failing to meet expectations
I just think Rick Riordan should have been more honest from the start that it wouldn’t be a page for page adaption. Because that was not the vibes he was giving in the past, he always made it seem like it would be a faithful adaptation. And sure it’s loyal to the book but a faithful adaptation?
No, instead almost everything is changed, and sure we end up with the same result in the end but I understand why people are disappointed about it not being like in the books. Especially when that’s what you expected.
I just think he should have been more clear on the fact that its a new spin on the book we all know and love, and yet still keeps its core values
( this has nothing To Do with the actors, They are doing the best They can with the material they’ve been given)
On a blog post back in april in 2022 he wrote this
Tumblr media
And sure it might just be because I’m older and seeing it from another perspective. But I honestly think the show lacks depth. And instead of getting trio content, we get so much Percabeth, and yes I love Percabeth but they are a trio and yet it just feels like Percabeth plus Grover.

Percy Jackson episode 8 ain't good either
Recently I got shouted at because I gave episode 8 of PJOTV a 4.5/10 when it’s the “best episode”. Well the entire show was a 5/10 tbh but I’ll explain why it’s not good, not as a response thread.
Mainly the climactic battle between Ares and Percy isn’t good. The choreography is mid, the cinematography too. You don’t feel how much danger Percy is in (like the books), how he doesn’t even have a millisecond to lose focus, just how much power Ares; swings have, how much he has to rely on the sea. The show has it more like Ares throws Percy around for a bit then stands completely still for a minute as Walker says his cringy dialogue then gets splashed by a bad cgi wave that does not feel powerful. It doesn’t help that all the other fights and monsters in the show lacked tension so Percy rising up to his biggest challenge after previous difficulties is lost.
Lance Reddick as Zeus is fine, he has the ability to make a bad script sound good and is the only god to exude power. But the deadline already passed and nothing happened even when we were promised the most destructive war in history.
The deeply nuanced relationship that Percy and Poseidon had is gone. Poseidon makes a dramatic appearance to save Percy and gives up his pride to surrender. The gods are petty, blue and orange moralled freaks with a nuclear bomb yet all of that is gone. Poseidon is unambiguously a great guy. That Medusa victimhood stuff feels laughable now as the gods are whitewashed to an absurd degree. The show even has Percy tell Luke “the gods are trying their best”.
Speaking of Luke, the show has barely established him as a friend. His training of Percy is relegated to a poorly placed flashback in this episode. Despite Percy knowing all the tropes and plot of TLT, he still confronts Luke alone in a forest when Luke can easily kill him with no witnesses. Luke for some reason duels him when that is out of character for him being a son of Hemes. The book has Luke explicitly state that he’s not Ares. I’m not sure why they tried to have Luke recruit Percy when he tried to have him thrown into Tarturus just a while ago. Annabeth is there too and I mean, her entire relationship with Luke has been nothing. Just Luke simping about her to Percy and I mean, we know Luke is a canonical hebephile and groomer but even the books had the grace to reveal that when Annabeth had at least gotten her menses. It’s just telling us that all of Annabeth’s vulnerability in the future about Luke will be gone because they hate black girls.
We also get a fake out reunion between Percy and Sally despite the show fleshing out their relationship more. Like it’s the entire reason we’re even on this quest and they just don’t do it.
Despite lambasting the movies for 14 years, Rick Riordan rips off Gabe’s death from there. Brava!
I don’t get what people are saying, this episode has all the problems of the previous episodes, it is not a blueprint for going forward.

A while ago on Reddit I made a post where I kind of gave my opinion on the whole Percy Jackson casting thing. But to show my comment, I have to share a different post. So I'll just credit them first: I commented under Reddit user u/how-s-chrysaf-taken on a post from last year on the subject of the PJO casting. (my post was made 28-30 days ago, however). Here's my copy and pasted transcript:
(u/how-s-chrysaf-taken): I'm kind of disappointed bc she doesn't look familiar. Like, I've gotten used to Annabeth being the tall, blonde girl with the curly hair, not just bc of the books but bc of all the fanart and fanfiction. No hate to any of the kids, and I'm sure they'll do a great job. It's just that after all these years I was hoping to see the characters come to life as I knew them.
(Me): I imagine it's how people who read Harry Potter before the films felt about the films changes. There may end up being people who can only visualize the characters as they were played by their actors here. Who honestly knows? All I know is, it's a subjective thing. I have a similar problem to you (being so used to the book description/design), but I see why it can be nice to let anyone play a role (and possibly play it to their interpretations, as well). I'm not sure where I'm going with this. But I know it's topic with a lot of depth and confusion to me.
So my opinion wasn't really expressed so much as I just rambled about why I think the subject is so touchy for some. It's all subjective, and a casting will always go against somebody's vision of things. It's a complex issue.

There was a lot about the Percy Jackson show that I enjoyed however, that entire season had not one second where there was any real action or sense of urgency. Every fight scene felt dull. I was constantly left with a sort of “that’s it?” feeling after what were, in the books, major and epic battles. The quest never felt like it had any real stakes to it. The looming war felt not so looming and the deadline being missed carried no consequence at all. Overall I would have loved for the show to have had literally any moments that caused emotional tension. Unfortunately for me it just didn’t

This isn't meant to be an anti-Percy post; rather, it's more Riordan critical.
Honestly, Percy is overpowered. I usually don't have a problem with overpowered characters if there's a reason for them to be overpowered, like gods, titans, someone who's been training for an unreasonably long time etc.
But the problem with Percy is that he doesn't fall into any of those categories.
This kid, without any training, without even having been in combat before, managed to kill a Fury. Then, he killed a Minotaur also without any training. Both of this is when he's twelve and both times, he does it without help — Chiron gives him a sword but he doesn't help him fight.
Then, he manages to defeat Luke, the best swordsman in CHB for a long time, also without any training. Granted, this one gets a bit of a pass since Percy was soaked, which enhances his powers — even if the explanation is a huge stretch.
Then, Percy manages to defeat Ares — an actual GOD — when he's only been training for a few months (or maybe not even that much) at most, just because he's near water. You can't defeat a war god, someone who should be able to flatten you with a wave of his finger, with just a wave.
And this is just the first book. I get that the children of the Big Three are supposed to be more powerful than the average demigod, but this is ridiculous. We've seen several other children of the Big Three but somehow only Percy is that powerful.
Hazel mistaking him for a god annoyed me, ngl. It had no purpose at all, aside from being another reason to show how ridiculously overpowered and overrate Percy is in-universe. By the time the events of HoO come around, Percy should be powerful, but not that powerful. It should take centuries for him to reach the power of a god. Especially since Percy doesn't train all the time; he doesn't even stay at camp the whole time. There's no reason for him to be this powerful. The explanation of "natural instincts" and "innate ability" can only be stretched so far before it becomes an excuse.

And the theme of them knowing everything continues. It's just boring for them to always know. There's no suspense. No danger. They talk to Medusa and easily defeat her. Where's the threat? The furies? Easily defeated. Echidna reveals herself to them right away so by the time they're in the arch... they already know there's danger. It was a more intense reveal in the book because they were already stuck in the elevator! With 2 monsters that wanted them dead! The crusty chapter was so good! They walked into a trap. Percy had to think on his feet while his friends are in danger. We see him figure out who Procrustes is. It was so anticlimatic in the show. Percy walks in knowing who crusty is. What his deal is. What he's going to try to do. Where's the danger???? They're just kids!! They shouldn't know everything!! Kids make mistakes. Even when they're smart.

listen like. people are totally entitled to their opinions and criticisms of the pjo show but. sometimes it’s just hard to hear/read. I know the show isn’t perfect but seeing the cast & producers talk about it and seeing the level of love and excitement theyve put into the work, idk, I feel for them having people tear it to shreds. criticising the author himself for not adapting it well when he’s doing something different with a new medium, saying they’re sorry for the kids who love the books but have to act in this “terrible” show as if these kids aren’t THRILLED by the opportunity and just so committed to giving the show their best.
(watch the behind the scenes documentary. seriously.)
again totally valid criticisms & opinions!! but you win some and lose some in an adaptation. eg. trying to expand on themes, keep a consistent tone, appeal to a broader audience (including those of us who loved the books as kids but are now!!! adults!!!), keep within budget, etc etc all these things involve some trade offs. sure some of the humour and goofiness has been lost but we also get amazing beautifully acted scenes that really expand on core themes of family or who is a monster etc etc.
speaking on a personal level I have had a hard time these past few months and this show became a genuine escape, a way for me to connect with my sister watching the episodes together, a rediscovery of my inner 12 year old who waited so long for this. and I know there are people who are like me and they had certain expectations and that’s why they’re disappointed and that’s so valid, but it’s a lot of negativity sometimes, & I just wish we could give a little grace bc making a creative thing is hard, and pleasing everyone with that creative thing is impossible, and most of all, maybe we could revel a little bit more in this unique complex piece of work that lots of people poured their hearts into with nothing but the best of intentions.
