Reading Little Women is great and Louisa May Alcott is a phenomenal writer…
But my god, if she were alive today she would run AO3 like the Navy. 400k word count Marauders fan fiction. My Hero Academia one shots. Nandermo slowburn. Stede x Ed enemies to lovers. Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons ship edits.
Fandoms would fall to their knees and pray, hoping she would grace them with her fictions.

I can’t believe I’m having to go to bat for Gabe Ugliano and talk about HIS character assassination but holy shit…
Gabe’s character and his relationship with Sally and Percy is in my opinion a very good, real, and raw example of what an abuser looks like and Rick somehow managed to do it IN A CHILDREN’S BOOK…
I appreciated that a lot about his writing, he didn’t shy away from what Gabe was, a horrible, abusive, cruel person. And because of that, his story ending with Sally turning him to stone with Medusa’s head goes to end a great story of revenge and freedom.
The show turns Gabe into this pathetic excuse of a man, one who only backs down from conflict when confronted… Percy comes home and he is upset for a minute but backs down when he learns Percy may have fought a girl. Gabe gets sort of upset at Sally but back downs when she essentially yells back at him. Sure he’s an asshole but that’s really as far as it goes. He’s not a quarter of the way as cruel and evil as he is in the books. For them to do that and then completely throw out the fact in the book he is ABUSING Sally, but then still feel they deserve to do the Medusa Head reveal is a slap in the face to readers and fans alike.
I reiterate… to turn this amazingly done story of abuse, revenge, and liberation into a post credit scene punchline shows this show has no respect for it’s fans, book or show alike. They don’t think these stories are worth telling or think their audience is too stupid to understand them… either way it’s the complete opposite of how Rick wrote the book… so what changed?
This show for whatever reason has decided to put conflict in places in which there needs to be none and completely remove the conflicts which made his book good in the first place!

The Trio: *loses one of four pearls*
Grover (the next scene): “Percy we only have three pearls left and there are four people we have to bring home from The Underworld! Percy what are we going to do? We had four pearls which was enough to bring back Annabeth, your mom, you, and me, but now we only have three pearls which isn’t enough to bring back all four of us! Percy one of us is going to have to stay down here in The Underworld which is the place that Hades lives! Alas, if only I had not lost that pearl then all four of us would be able to leave this treacherous place! But hark, in my pitiful careless I have a pearl in absence, and due to that Perseus Jackson, named for Thee Perseus, one of our mighty crew will have to spend thine days in the halls of Hades eternal and expansive domain! Lest we find another shining and spherical pearl, of which, let me remind you, we have three, which is less than the required four for our journey, we have no chance of succeeding on this quest without failing in some regard! Percy! I lost my pearl! Forgiveth me!”

My problem with the Percy Jackson show is they’re clearly trying to cater to a specific audience but they don’t even know which audience they want to cater to.
I’m all for the show trying to capture a new audience in people who haven’t read the books, that’s great, but they don’t seem to know how to actually do that.
The book does a great job being for young readers while never holding their hands when it comes to how generally complicated Greek mythology is, especially since Rick loves to delve deeper into in than just gods and monsters… the show however spends half of its time having Grover lore dump to the audience about the simplest detail, making it feel as if it’s trying to capture the demographic below the one the books are intended for.
At the same time as all of this they’re trying to do so much fan service and rectify the issues people had with the movies, but never fully committing, making scenes feel underdeveloped yet over-explained. These two issues make the show feel inaccessible to new fans and annoyingly slow to old fans.
The mattress store scene in Episode 7 is a perfect example. The episode starts with Percy walking into a random store we know nothing about, lore dumping information at the only other guy in the room who already knows that shit so clearly it’s just for the audience, before declaring he is evil and defeating him before anything negative can happen. To book readers we recognize the store and the store owner, but are left underwhelm at how incorrect the scene is portrayed compared to the book, and to new fans what the hell even just happened???? The Lotus Casino also suffers from the same issues.
There are some great parts of the show… the main trio is doing a great job with their roles. But oh my dear god the show feels like someone who read Percy Jackson twenty years ago is trying to describe it to a room of preschoolers who just started nap time.

Baldur’s Gate 3 giving me a 20 skill check (That I just wanted to pass) with no bonus and no inspiration right after Astarion says “on your knees,” forcing me to reload a bunch and hear the line over and over has to be a highlight of my Dark Urge play through.
