When we were assigned “The Good Earth” in 9th grade, I read it in 2 days. After seeing this as the March pick for my building’s book club, I read it in 3. On an iPad, which I’ve never done before. Amazing, simply amazing.

“The truly creative mind in any field is no more than this: A human creature born abnormally, inhumanely sensitive. To them…a touch is a blow, a sound is a noise, a misfortune is a tragedy, a joy is an ecstasy, a friend is a lover, a lover is a god, and failure is death.”

Long time ago I had to read The Big Wave, a book about a tsunami that happened to a fishing village in Japan. Wasn't very interesting to me then, but there was this one part that I'll never forget and makes me think of Malleus with his Yuu now.
These two friends are sharing secrets cause they think they might die and their conversation went something like this, not word for word:
"I like your sister."
"What?"
"Yeah if we live I'd like to marry her and live by the docks."
"She can't even cook. She always burns the rice." *like how do you burn rice, ew*
"I don't care. I'll still eat her food. I'd love to wake up and eat every bite of burned rice just to see the smile on her face."
On the one hand, it's so sweet cause even in the face of death he's head over heels, longing for the sweet future, devoted till the end. Not expected of a child their age. But on the other, I'm on the brother's side cause one: it's his best friend sharing this after so long of not saying it, a bit weird/gross for him. And two: they're about to die and he's talking about his sister, like if they do die then and there his last memory would be of confused disgust imagining his sister and best friend together.
Anyway, might try to find/reread it and see if it is more interesting now than it was then. Who knows, maybe I hallucinated that whole scene cause I was bored.
I can kinda see Silver with his Yuu like this too.
